A community’s bid to halt the building of a large whiskey warehouse facility consisting of 13 maturation warehouses on an 111 acre site have been dealt a blow following an intervention

by Louth County Council.

The ‘Kilcurry Concerned Residents’ committee were notified last week that Louth County Council have published a material contravention to the County Development Plan 2015-21 to facilitate the construction of the warehouses. The Great Northern Distillery in Dundalk which is owned

by John Teeling had proposed the plans for the building of the warehouses in Kilcurry but the company were immediately met

with strong resistance from residents. The group have bought a site in Kilcurry on land behind St Brigid’s church and lodged an application for the development of a whiskey warehouse facility consisting of thirteen maturation warehouses and ancillary building structures on a 111-acre site.

Just last month John Teeling seemed to admit defeat with regards to the project getting the go ahead from council officials.

“It’s a lot like data centres.

If there were a couple of hundred jobs it’d be easier, but a data centre and a whiskey warehouse don’t have many jobs,” stated John.

Plans for Great Northern Distillery warehouses boosted From Page 1

the following material contravention in relation to the building of the warehouses.

‘Ref. No. in Planning Register: 17/730 Notice is hereby given in accordance with section 34(6) of the

Planning and Development Act 2000 that Louth County Council intends to consider deciding to grant permission for: 10 year permission for the development of a whiskey warehouse facility consisting of 13 no. maturation warehous-

es, ancillary buildings, structures and all ancillary site development works on a site within an area of 45 hectares (111 acres).

The proposed development also provides for the creation of a site for community use with access via an upgraded existing entrance from Church Road.’

Louth County Council are seeking submissions or observations as regards to the application, with the closing date Thursday May 17th at 4.30pm.

The ‘Kilcurry Concerned Residents’ committee had already voiced their displeasure about the proposed project citing the warehouses as an eyesore on the landscape as well as concerns regarding ‘black whiskey fungus’ which is extremely common in spirits maturation facilities. This fungus is airborne and creates a

black soot like material on houses, cars and any physical properties nearby. The whiskey fungus requires frequent cleaning and causes damage to the physical property and cause their houses to lose value.

A statement from the group pleaded with the elected representatives of County Louth not to allow the material contravention to proceed. According to John Gartland who is on the committee 75% of councillors need to agree with the proposal before it can be passed.

“It is still the opinion of the Kilcurry Con-

cerned Residents committee that our community is not a suitable location for a largescale development like this.

“We are disappointed and saddened by the decision of the Louth Planning Authority, which despite a large number of observations, concerns and petitions have decided to approve this development pending material contravention of the county development plan.

There are over 70 houses (all with wells for primary water supply) a school with over 200 pupils, a church, crèche and resource

centre all in the immediate perimeter of this proposed development (over double this amount if the radius is extended to 800m).

We, as community, have highlighted the many concerns and dangers associated with a development like this and have liaised with other communities in Scotland and the USA who are currently dealing on a day to day basis with many of the issues we highlighted.

It would be our wish and desire that the elected representatives of Louth County council do not allow this material contravention

to proceed,” concluded the statement.

Meanwhile a statement from the Great Northern Distillery noted that they had listened to and addressed the concerns of the Kilcurry community and were now hopeful that the councillors would support the material contravention so that planning may go ahead for the project.

“It is just over a year since we had a presentation to the Kilcurry community outlining our proposals for the warehouse development.

We listened to and appreciate the concerns of the local com-

munity and have worked to address these, with extensive landscaping and other measures, to minimise the impact, and potential impact, of the warehouses on the local community and environment.

Indeed, among the very first steps in the construction schedule would be the building of berms and landscaping to screen the construction of the warehouses.

The planning staff have been very thorough and diligent in their examination of the application and in their request for further information to ensure the statutory requirements and the concerns of the local community were fully addressed.

We now hope that the councillors will support the material contravention motions so that planning may proceed,” read the statement.

Ann Marie Duffy from Glenwood in Dundalk will represent Louth at this year’s Rose of Tralee festival in Kerry after impressing the judges in the Four Season’s Hotel in Carlingford on Sunday evening.

The 26-year old speech and language therapist will succeed Aoife Heffron who won last years event. According to Ann Marie she left it a bit late applying for the competition only sending in her application two weeks before the deadline.

“I’m obviously thrilled to have been chosen to represent Louth at the Rose of Tralee festival. I’ve got very big shoes to fill as Aoife did a wonderful job representing her County throughout the year. I’ve already been getting plenty of tips and advice from her so I’m very thankful for that,” stated Ann Marie.

An exhibition of painting and sculpture celebrating 50 years of artists working in north Louth will open in Dundalk’s An Tain Arts Centre on May 9.

The 50th Anniversary Exhibition of the North Louth Artists features over 60 artworks, paintings, sculptures and ceramics created by leading professional artists living and working in the region.

The exhibition, which runs from May 10 to 26, will be opened by Dr Marie Bourke, formerly Keeper and Head of Education at the National Gallery of Ireland.

Among the 14 artists exhibiting are Cooley Peninsula-based landscape painter Irene Woods and Dundalk sculptor Sandra Bell, whose well-loved public art pieces include the Rhyme and Rhythm bronze sculpture at Earl Street, Dundalk, and husband Derek Bell paints a great variety of subjects from landscape to figurative in oil.

Renowned for her beautifully detailed flora watercolours is Blackrock artist Paula Eigenheer, while Dundalk De La Salle secondary school teacher Gerry Clarke

is also well-known for his watercolours.

Former teacher and founder member of Dundalk’s Bridge Street Studios, Frances Lambe, will be showing her work in sculptural ceramics.

Painter John O’Connor will be showing his abstract and figurative works inspired by local bogs and landscapes.

Among the new rising stars are Carlingford sculptor Alva Gallagher, who works mainly in glass and Dundalk-born Omin who has been gaining acclaim bringing graffiti art to a mainstream audience.

Carlingford Lough provides the inspiration for artist Rosemary Warren, while dazzling, exhilarating colour is a feature of Blackrockbased artist Patricia Murphy’s work.

Also exhibiting are north Louth husband and wife Siobhan Conyngham and Patrick Conyngham, and highly regarded Mullacrew artist Ciara Agnew.

The North Louth Artists 50th Anniversary Exhibition runs from May 10-26 at An Tain Arts Centre, Dundalk, (933 2332) open Tuesday to Saturday, 10am to 4pm.

Programme at Education Awards The MBS in Entrepreneurship & Marketing at Dundalk Institute of Technology (DkIT) has been awarded two prestigious Education Awards 2018 for Best Academic Partnership and Best International Collaboration Project. The awards were announced at a ceremony in Dublin on Thursday April 19 which was attended by representatives from third level education sector across the island of Ireland.

The one-year full-time MBS programme has been shortlisted for its innovative international partnership between DkIT and Heilbronn University in Germany.

The ‘hands-on’ postgraduate programme has been designed to enhance learners’ understanding of entrepreneurship and innovation in practice. In addition to its unique IrishGerman collaborative teaching delivery, the MBS also includes

an international strategy residential session, live industrybased student projects and student exchange opportunities.

Dundalk Martial Arts Club had an extremely successful day of fighting on Saturday last as seven fighters made their way to Dublin to compete in The Best of The Best Competition.

Aoibheann Morgan entered her very first competition into the 5-6yrs group and won the gold medal, while Robyn

Halpenny entered the girls 1214yrs section fighting her way to the final where she secured a Silver medal.

Joseph Cassidy entered the boys 12-14yrs section and returned home with a Silver medal, while Masie Cassidy entered the girls 9-10yrs divison securing a Silver medal in the final.

Leona Omania-Curley entered the girls 7-9 section where she took home a Silver medal, while Leon OmaniaCurley entered the boys 7-9 divison where he fought really well taking home a bronze medal. Cillian Mostyn entered the boys 9-10yrs here he fought extremely well showing a huge level of skill and dedication.

Ryan Watters (21) of 11 The Alders, Clones Road, Monaghan, had the case against him struck out at Dundalk District Court after Judge John Coughlan struck the case out when a €300 contribution was made to charity.

The defendant was arrested on March 19 this year and admitted three public order offences in front of Judge John Coughlan.

Mixed weekend for Dundalk teams IT was a mixed weekend for Dundalk Golf Club on the inter-club scene as two teams advanced to the next rounds of their respective competitions while two others bit the dust at the first hurdle.

There was success for the Men’s All-Ireland Fourball and Ladies Junior Foursomes teams but the Men’s Provincial Towns Cup and Boys U15 teams were both beaten.

Having received a bye in the opening round, the AllIreland Fourball team, which is managed by Frank Byrne and Larry Soraghan, are now through to the third round after an impressive 4-1 win over Bellewstown on Saturday.

With three matches away, against the team that had knocked Co Louth out of the competition in the previous

round, it was imperative that Dundalk won their two home games and they not only did that but they did so with two impressive displays of golf.

Adrian Kenny and Gerry McDermott put the first Dundalk point on the board followed by Peter O’Brien and Dermot McKenna.

It was a lot closer in Bellewstown for most of the day but Dundalk eventually kicked on with Eamonn McEneaney and Joe Flanagan securing the tie-winning third point. David Cairns and Colm Garvey had bounced back from being three down at one stage to be two up after 16 when they were called in. The final pairing of Ray Pepper and Kevin Carthy were two down with four to play when were called in.

In the Ladies Junior Four-

somes on Sunday at Concra Wood, Dundalk advanced to the next round after a 2-1 win over Greenore. The team, which is managed by Maria Kerr and Violet McGeady comprised Berni McGuinness & Theresa Connolly, Mags Coburn & Bernie McCabe and Brid Rocks & Niamh Maguire.

The peculiarities of matchplay were definitely on show in the Provincial Towns Cup match against Greenore on Saturday as Dundalk lost 4-5 having looked in control for the most of the day.

As the away team, Dundalk hosted four of the nine matches and got off to a flyer as Damian English and 14-yearold Zak Alderdice, making his senior debut, both won 6&5 while Gerard Carroll won

4&3. The final match in Dundalk resulted in a 5&3 defeat for Trevor Giff.

Derek Murdock lost 3&2 in the top match but Eddie Rocks won 2&1 to leave the score at 4-2 for Dundalk with three matches still to be decided.

Greenore took the bottom match with a 3&2 win over Turlough King while Paul Morrison, lost by one hole.

By this stage Fergal Sexton was heading down the 19th which his Greenore opponent managed to win to secure the tie-winning point.

The U15 Boys lost out to Co Louth in the second leg. Christopher Clarke, Tom Dunne and Conor Murphy won their matches but Joseph Laverty lost his and Zak Alderdice was level through 16 when his match was called in.

More success for Geraldine

Local athlete Geraldine Finegan continues to impress in both track and field with the North East Runner recently celebrating a new world record to add to her long list of achievements in the sport.

Geraldine travelled to Helsinki last weekend to compete in the tetradecathlon which consists of 14 events which take place over two days.

She competed in the W50 section for women between 50 and 54 and finished with a total of 10,274 which is a world record for her age group.

Geraldine smashed the old record beating it by over 6000 points. According to the recently crowned European Indoors Pentathlete champion her latest success came about due to the high standards she sets for herself.

“I was over the moon with my first day’s performance over the seven events with a score of 5477 points and knew I

had already broke the World Record.

However, I wanted to break 10,000 points which I knew would be an unreal target to reach.

“My aim was to reach 11,000 as I believe in setting your standards high but in say-

ing that they must also be achievable.

The other athletes had great respect for each other and cheered and encouraged each other in every event from first to last place.

“It is no easy thing to finish 14 events and with 20 mins between

events it made it even tougher to finish. My goal this time was not just to finish the event in first place but also to break the record.

I wanted that alltime record of over 10000 points which is the highest of world records ever recorded for a

woman indoors.

“I had planned it from last August but had a few setbacks along the way unfortunately.

The death of a dear friend and an illness didn’t help but I peaked at the right time. What is next for me is to coach the next level of

World Champion athletes that are in Dundalk. This is very exciting for me with the Olympics in Tokyo coming up in 2020. I will be happy to be a small part of the success of the next generation that we are making,” remarked Geraldine.

Summer league is under way Round one of The Bike Station Summer Cycling League kicked off with a relatively short road race of 26km, from the Fane Bridge to the Dunleer Roundabout and back. The flattish course and still evening saw very fast times, with the scratch group averaging a rapid 46.7km an hour for the distance.

Group 3 were the first out on the road and they used their handicap to the maximum advantage to stay away from the chasers.

In the final kilometre, Brian Daly, who rides with Kilkenny’s Marble City Wheelers, launched an attack down the hard

shoulder and quickly established a small gap.

As the other riders hesitated, no one wanting to waste energy ahead of the sprint, Daly held the gap all the way to the line to take a fine win.

The rest of the top five were all Cuchulainn riders, with Donal Quinn in second and Gavin Rafferty in third.

Claire Ludlow of Ardee Cycling Club was first lady home in 13th place.

James McMorrow of Drogheda Wheelers led the next group home.

In the second race Edward Carville of Cuchulainn took a comfortable win over Paul McCartney in second and Andrew Flood in third.

Councillor hits out at dumping of dead cattle Sinn Féin Councillor Tomás Sharkey has hit out at the dumping of dead cattle on the roadside in North Louth: “Rassan is a rural area on the N53 between Dundalk and Culloville. This week-

end we witnessed a disgusting act of dumping and endangerment of public health.

“Amongst the items dumped on the roadside was a dead and rotting calf. I witnessed the site. It was disgusting. The smell

was putrid and bluebottles were crawling over the carcass.

“There is a lot of waste on the adjacent site.

“Last year the Council attempted to establish the ownership of the site and ran into

difficulties. This recent event is a new low.

“I am asking everybody to be vigilant for this type of dumping and contamination,” stated the Sinn Fein councillor.

Gerald Farrell (29) of 54 Fernhill Rd, Katesbridge, Banbridge, Co Down escaped without a conviction after making a donation of €300 to charity at Dundalk District Court.

Solicitor Niall Lavery stated that his client had pleaded guilty to public order charges arising out of an incident on March 18 this year at Park St, and that he had no previous convictions.

Judge John Coughlan struck the matter out after the money was paid.

Brendan Moley (22) of 12 Fininiskin Rd, Cullyhanna, Armagh, avoided a conviction at Dundalk District Court when he made a donation of €400 to charity.

The defendant appeared in front of Judge John Coughlan after an incident at Park St on Park St on March 19 this year, and pleaded guilty to three public order charges.

Solicitor Eleanor Kelly stated that her client had paid €400 bail and was willing to give that as a donation if the matter was struck out.

Dundalk Scout Group move to distance themselves from national scouting scandal

The St Patrick’s Scout Group 1st/2nd/5th Louth have released a statement distancing themselves from the recent scandal which has engulfed Scouting Ireland.

It recently emerged in reports in the Irish Times that concerns had been raised about Scouting Ireland’s handling of a complaint of rape in 2016 against one of its senior officials. A female scout leader had claimed she was raped seven years previously.

The alleged male offender was initially suspended during the investigation but was reinstated in 2017 after the Director of Public Prosecutions decided not to proceed with the case. A report into the matter was conducted by safeguarding expert Ian Elliot who stated that he had concerns over accountability and disclosure at the organisation.

There were calls for Scouting Ireland Chief Scout Christy McCann to step aside following the allegations but he

refused to do so and was re-elected last weekend at the organisation’s annual conference in the Helix in Dublin. He ran unopposed for the position. Amongst those who called for Christy McCann to step aside were the 1st/2nd/5th Louth Scout Group who asked for all those named in the Elliot Report to step aside until an independent investigation had concluded.

“1st/2nd/5th Louth Scout Group is committed to serve the young people of Dundalk and help them to develop

as full and active citizens in a safe environment. We are proud to be members of Scouting Ireland, indeed one of our members, Peter Dixon, was instrumental in its foundation.

Given the reports in today’s & recent editions of Irish Times, we would like to issue a reassurance to our members, their families and to friends of our Scout Group. All Scouters in our Group are Garda Vetted or have gone through Access NI. At all times the safety and welfare of our youth and

adult members is paramount. Our Scouters receive appropriate training to fulfil their roles.

Inappropriate behaviour is not tolerated. At all times our Scout Group will act in the best inter-

The issues raised in the Irish Times relate to the National Association and failures at that level.

The multi-disciplinary, cross-border project BREATH (Borders and Regions Airways Training Hub) has won Asthma / COPD Project of the Year at the 19th Northern Ireland Healthcare Awards held at the Europa Hotel Belfast. The €7.7m project is a highly ambitious, collaborative research partnership that has brought together a world class cluster of researchers from the Smooth Muscle Research Centre, Dundalk Institute of Technology, Schools of Pharmacy and Medicine, Dentistry and Biomedical Sciences, Queen’s University Belfast and the Institute of Biomedical and

Environmental Health Research, University of the West of Scotland, whose aim is to better understand and alleviate

the impact of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD).

COPD is an incurable lung disease that is

a leading cause of death worldwide, and is particularly prevalent in the border regions of Ireland and Northern Ireland, in

addition to South West Scotland.

Despite the huge health challenge that the disease presents,

it is still a relatively under-resourced and under-researched illness. Throughout this five-year project, over 30 researchers and doctoral students will work together, to develop innovative approaches which will contribute to the better treatment and management of COPD. The programme also encourages collaborative partnerships with industry.

Dr. Tim McCormac, Head of Research at DkIT congratulated those involved in this project which aims to better understand the condition.

There was tremendous success for Naoise Durnin and Rebecca Lambe Fagan from St. Mary’s College in the final of Gael Linn’s prestigious ‘Abair’ Irish public speaking competition on Tuesday 17th April. The final was held in The Seamus Heaney HomePlace in Bellaghy in Derry.

Naoise and Rebecca qualified for the final having previously achieved first and second place in the regional bout in Newry in February. Speakers from across the nine counties of Ulster and Co. Louth compete in the annual cross-border competition.

Competitors on the day had to speak about a topical issue as Gaeilge for three minutes each.

In the final Naoise spoke about her chosen topic of ‘Na meáin shóisialta’ / ‘Social Media’, while Rebecca spoke about ‘Saol Stephen Hawking’ / ‘The life of Stephen Hawking’.

They were delighted to win both first and second place in the junior section of the competition and received high commendation from the judges. They were both awarded trophies and half scholarships to attend Coláiste Gael Linn Bhun an Inbhir Gaeltacht College in Donegal to recognise their tremendous success. Gael Linn Chief Executive Antoine Ó Coileáin, and Foras na Gaeilge Deputy Chief Executive Edel Ní Chorráin awarded the prizes on the day.

Guilty plea to public order charges

A man who pleaded guilty to public order charges avoided a conviction after making a €200 donation to charity.

Pauric Kelly (23) of 221 Cedarwood Park, Cox’s Demesne, Dundalk, admitted charges of intoxication and threatening and abusive behaviour at Park St on September 10 last year.

The defence solicitor stated that his client had previous convictions for road traffic offences.

Judge John Coughlan stated that he would take €200 for charity and struck the matter out.

Bernard Carolan (23) of 29 Crescent 1, Muirhevnamor, avoided a conviction at Dundalk District Court after agreeing to pay €300 to charity. The defendant admitted charges intoxication, threatening and abusive behaviour and failing to comply with a peace officer on March 18 this year at Park St. In striking the matter out Judge John Coughlan stated that it was an expensive night out and warned that the next time it would cost him €600.

Avoided Conviction

A man who was described as a promising young sportsman had his case struck out at Dundalk District Court after paying €300 to charity. Cian Dullaghan (24) of 12 Trinity Close, Carlingford, admitted charges of intoxication, threatening and abusive behaviour and obstructing a peace officer at Park St on March 19 this year. Solicitor Sean T O’Reilly stated that his client’s father was present in court and had taken a dim view of his actions and described Mr Dullaghan as a promising young sportsman. Judge John Coughlan accepted the donation and struck the matter out.

Exhibition to looks at Dundalk’s history through photos The hugely popular facebook page ‘Dundalk Northend and Friends’ has become somewhat of a hub with regards to people around town and further afield sharing their photographs and memories of times gone by. The page was set up seven years ago and now has a huge number of people checking in regularly to look at old photo’s and videos posted of the town down through the years.

At the end of last year the people behind the page announced that they were planning on holding an exhi-

bition in the town showing a wide range of old photos and videos from the page. That exhibition has now been confirmed to be taking place on Tuesday May 1 as part of the Bealtaine Festival. The event will be called ‘Days of Yore’ and will take place at 6:30pm in the County Library in Roden Place.

The exhibition will be hosted by the page’s founder Larry O’Hagan as well as well known radio personality Harry Lee. According to Larry the exhibition will include a wide range of photos

displayed on a big screen as well as plenty of nostalgic chat on the evening.

“We’re looking forward to showing people the exhibition and we can promise plenty of old photos as well a bit of craic and banter on the evening,” stated Larry.

“When I set the page up originally I never intended it to turn what it has become but for whatever reason people latched on to it and it is no exaggeration to say it has become popular all over the globe now. There are Dundalk people living all over the

A Parent Forum will be held on Wednesday April 25 in The Lisdoo starting at 9.30am and all parents are invited to attend.

The theme of the forum is Help your Child Beat the Bully.

Town hosts Darkness Into Light

ON Saturday May 12, families, youth groups, secondary schools, adults and children will join the sea of yellow to fundraise for Pieta House in the 10th Anniversary ‘Darkness Into Light’ 5km run.

The aim of the run is to raise awareness,

tackle the stigma and to promote suicide prevention.

It is also, to help fundraise for Pieta House, as they offer free counselling to those who are suffering.

There are a total of 180 venues across Ireland. Dundalk is one of the towns fortunate enough to be hosting

a run.

It will take place at the ‘Dundalk Institute of Technology’ on the Dublin Road.

The run will commence at 4:15am.

Those who wish to take part in the Darkness Into Light run can sign up online.

Annagassan Historical Society presents a lecture on fishing

Annagassan Historical Society’s next lecture on Thursday April 26 8pm in the Loft History Hall (Over Slan’s) in Annagassan. The topic of this illustrated lecture is Annagassan fishing through the years and our speaker on the night is Tommy Mulroy.

Tommy is passionate about fishing

and methods used to fish for the many species caught on our coast including salmon, herring, flounder and mackerel and shellfish like cockles, lobster, razor clams, winkles and crab.

It will detail the equipment and boats used in fishing together with anecdotes of those

involved in the industry.

Places are limited so you are advised to come early. Entrance fee is €5 and includes tea/coffee afterwards.

Members will have the opportunity to renew their membership for 2018 on the night and new members are always welcome.

ACS School Tour to Paris and Brussels ON Wednesday March 22 a total of 54 students and five teachers were packing to fly out to Paris the next day when a call came to say the flight had been cancelled due to a French Air Traffic Controller’s strike.

It meant heading off to take an earlier flight to Brussells.

Half of the group left on the early flight and this afforded them the opportunity to have a day in the European Parliament Museum and the Grand-Place Square which is the central square of Brussels and one of the most beautiful squares in Europe. They had a wander around the city centre and then met with the remainder of the classmates who arrived in on the later flight. The group had dinner and then went on a 4-hour coach journey to Paris.

The group finished the day with a meal together and all met up for the spectacular fireworks show to celebrate 25 Years of Disneyland Paris.

MAD Youth Theatre on stage in Spirit Store MAD Youth theatre brings another gritty play to the Spirit Store. DNA by Dennis Kelly is about a group of teenagers do something bad, then panic and cover the whole thing up. But when they find that the coverup unites them and brings harmony to their otherwise fractious lives.

DNA is a poignant and, sometimes, hilarious tale with a very dark heart.

The performance runs for three nights, it kicks off on Wednesday May 2 with a preview with tickets for €7 Thursday and Friday shows are €10. You can purchase the tickets on line via their

Additional places now available in DkIT healthcare project News

NetwellCASALA, the Research Centre for Ageing at DkIT, is running a user trial for ProACT, a major EU project to improve the health and wellbeing of older people with multiple chronic health conditions.

The research team, based in Dundalk have been overwhelmed by older people engaging with the ProACT project and are de-

lighted to announce there are 10 additional places for people who are aged over 65 and who have been diagnosed with two or more of the following chronic conditions: diabetes, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), including emphysema or chronic bronchitis, heart failure or chronic heart disease (angina, hypertension, atherosclerosis, arrhyth-

mia) to participate in the trial. Up to five people in the care network supporting the older person (e.g. family member, informal carer and healthcare professionals) can also participate in the trial.

The project is called ProACT and it has the potential to vastly improve the healthcare being delivered to older people who have multiple chronic conditions,

Adams’ criticism of opposition to Extreme Weather Bill

Sinn Féin Louth TD Gerry Adams has condemned the decision by the government and Fianna Fáil to oppose Sinn Féin’s Extreme Weather Bill.

Teachta Adams said: “The Extreme Weather Miscellaneous Provisions Bill 2018 is about prioritising the safety of citizens first during extreme weather events and alerts. The impetus for this legislation was the tragic deaths of three citizens last year during Storm Ophelia. The purpose of this Bill is to amend the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005 to make sure that employees are safe during severe weather warnings issued by Met Éireann.

“Secondly, it amends the Criminal Justice (Public Order) Act 1994 to provide for the protection of public safety and the safety of rescue service personnel during such a weather warning.

“Storm Emma and Ophelia exposed the weakness in existing legislation and the confusion that exists over the responsibilities of employers and the rights of workers in the private sector.

“The Sinn Féin Bill is about addressing these issues. The need for this was most obvious in advance of Storm Emma when the Government urged people not to travel unless absolutely necessary and Taoi-

“The decision by the Government and Fianna Fáil to oppose this Bill will continue to put at risk the lives of citizens faced with the choice of working during extreme weather alerts as demanded by their employer and losing wages.

Two Dundalk students are among seven Louth winners to win top prizes in this year’s 64th Texaco Children’s Art Competition.

In 6-years and under age category, third prize (€100) went to six-year-old Bella Reynolds (pictured), a pupil at Scoil Dairbhre, for her work entitled ‘iPad Gremlin’.

Another Dundalk winner, who will receive a Special Merit Award, is Cara Pilbeam (15), from St. Vincent’s Secondary School, for a work entitled ‘An Seanchaí Béag’.

Prizes will be presented at an awards ceremony in Dublin next month when all of the 126 top prize-winners will be in attendance.

Coláiste Lú compete in two national finals

The students of Coláiste Lú have been impressing judges in all competitions this school year, from the national finals of Poetry Aloud back in December to the school choir taking home second place in the National Finals of Scléip in January. Yet again Coláiste Lú students have been shortlisted among the best in Ireland and this week they compete in not one but two national finals.

On Tuesday, April 17 Fifth Year students Ellen Ní Neachtain and Rónán Ó Coigligh spoke at the national finals of the Irish-language speech-making compe-

tition ‘Abair’. Rónán and Ellen won first and second place at the regional heats of ‘Abair’ with their self-penned speeches on ‘The 8th Amendment’ and ‘Irish Language Rights’.

Following their regional success Rónán and Ellen spent weeks working with their mentor Neasa Ní Chonluain preparing fresh speeches for Tuesday’s national final with Rónán focussing on ‘Gun Laws in the USA.’ and Ellen speaking out on issues affecting Palestine.

Following great success at Féile Dhún Dealgan where they picked up the trophy for Best

Post-Primary School, and Best New Script, Dáire Mac Searraigh was awarded Best Male Actor Coláiste Lú’s drama club went on to impress at the Leinster finals in Mullingar.

At Féile Laighean the actors from our local gaelcholáiste won themselves a place in the National Finals on Wednesday April 18.

The cast of eight students from first and second year in Coláiste Lú will take to the stage at the Féile Náisiúnta to perform the new short play “An Seó” written by teacher Maria Nic Eochaidh.

“We are so proud to

have our students competing once again at the highest level nationally,” said Ms. Nic Eochaidh, stiúrthóir of Coláiste Lú.

“It’s exciting to see their hard work paying off.

The Coláiste Lú trophy collection already outnumbers the amount of years our school has been open.

Coláiste Lú is Co. Louth’s only gaelcholáiste, offering post-primary education through the medium of Irish.

Currently located at their temporary Chapel Street campus, Coláiste Lú will move this year to their brand new stateof-the-art campus at the Marshes.

A WOMAN who needed to drive to keep her job was spared a disqualification at Dundalk District Court.

Caoimhe Nugent (27) of 11 Castlerock, Crossmaglen, Newry, was detected travelling at 91kph in a 60kph zone at Crumlin, Dun-

dalk, on July 27 last year.

Solicitor Paula Tiernan stated that her client had not received a fixed penalty notice and had she done so would have paid the fine. The defendant stated that she only became aware of the of-

fence when a summons arrived to appear in court.

Ms Tiernan added that there is an issue in Armagh with post arriving from the south, particularly with fixed penalty notices. She stated that if Ms Nugent was disqualified

she would not be able to provide for her child as she works in Dundalk.

Judge John Coughlan imposed a fine of €500 and warned that the defendant would be disqualified if she came before the court again.

Court case highlights problems with post sent to Co Armagh

McGahon urges public to register for vote Dundalk Councillor John McGahon has urged people to make sure they are registered to vote ahead of the upcoming referendum on the 8th Amendment.

“Now that the referendum date has been announced for May 25th it is vital that

people ensure they are registered to vote.

Many people often think they are registered and then find out they aren’t. Using the website Checktheregister.ie<http://Checktheregister.ie> is a quick and easy way to find out if you are registered or not.

“If you aren’t registered, all you have to do is fill in an RFA2 form or if you have changed address you need to fill in an RFA3 and send it to the Franchise Section, Louth County Council. The closing date for addition to the register is May 8.

“Whether you are pro-choice or prolife, it won’t matter if you aren’t registered before May 8th, so take a few minutes to use Checktheregister.ie<http://Checktheregister.ie> and make sure you have the opportunity to have your say.

FUEL PRICES RISE AGAIN

The average price of both petrol and diesel has increased according to the AA’s latest fuel prices survey, bringing an end to a one month reprieve for motorists where prices had fallen slightly.

A litre of petrol now costs an average of 137.6c, up from an average of 137.0c in March of this year. Meanwhile, diesel prices currently sit at an average of 127.1c per litre, up from 126.5 last month. While both fuels remain below their 2018 highs of 138.2c for petrol and 127.3c for diesel, the latest increases brings an end to a brief one month reprieve for motorists after prices fell last month, marking the first drop at the pumps since July 2017.

According to the AA’s research, motorists in Dublin can expect to pay almost 1c per litre more than the national average on both fuels.

The average price of a litre of petrol in Dublin is currently 138.5c per litre, while a litre of diesel in Dublin will cost 128.0c on average.

“Motorists would have been hoping that the dip in pump prices that we saw last month was the beginning of a new trend, but unfortunately it appears that that was the exception and not the rule. While prices are still down slightly on their 2018 highs, many motorists will be feeling the effect of rising prices and the ever increasing cost of commuting to work,” Conor Faughnan, AA Director of Consumer Affairs stated. “One of the messages we regularly preach when discussing car insurance is the importance of shopping around, but motorists should apply this same behaviour to their fuel purchasing habits.”

“Many of us develop a behaviour of going to the same garage every time we need fuel, never taking the time to actually compare prices in our area. Over the course of conducting this research we found prices ranging from over 4c below the national average to over 3c above, so taking the time to check pump prices at a number of garages in your town can help you save.”

Among the key reasons for the latest spike in fuel prices is a continued increase in the cost of crude oil. Having fallen to below $64 per barrel in early March, crude oil prices have rebounded and are currently floating between $70 and $72 per barrel.

“Over the past few months crude oil prices have been quite volatile which is a contributing factor to the spikes and temporary dips that motorists have seen at the pumps throughout 2018. Since the beginning of March alone we have seen crude oil prices rise from a low of under $64 per barrel to their current level of over $71 per barrel, with motorists paying for these fluctuations at the pump,” Faughnan added. “Having a significant say on these kind of international factors is beyond the scope of Ireland’s power, but what is very much under our control is the crazily high rate of tax we put on both petrol and diesel. If we want to avoid people finding themselves in a situation where they struggle to afford the cost of commuting to work we either need to reassess our current tax rates on fuel or see government commit to seriously improving public transport in cities across the country and in rural Ireland.”
