€11.8m in claims to injuries board

Louth came out third in a table showing the amount of claims made to the injuries board with a total of €11.8m coming into the county through compensation.

The county in Ireland with the most awards as per head of population last year was Limerick. It accounts for 4.18% of Ireland’s total population and 7.67% of awards. It was followed by Longford, Louth, Dublin and Galway.

Last year there was a total of 516 claims made from County Louth to the injuries board.

The county with the fewest awards as per head of population last year was Kilkenny, with it accounting for 2.08% of Ireland’s total

population and 0.98% of the total awards given.

The average for payouts in Louth totalled a whopping €11.8m with an average payout of €22,871 for the 516 claims. That average of €22,871 was slightly higher than the national average of €22,642.

Of the 516 claims the vast majority were awarded with respect to car accidents, with 405 claims were car related, 79 were for public liability while 32 were for employer liabilities.

The remit of InjuriesBoard.ie, which was set up in 2004 by the Irish government, is to assess claims for compensation for anyone who has been in an accident and suffered an injury.

Enterprising students show their skills

The Marshes Centre was abuzz last Friday as the town’s young secondary school budding entrepreneurs displayed their wares to a receptive public.

The reason was the Dundalk Cross-Border Student Enterprise Trade Fair, an event that has been running in Dundalk since the mid 90s. It grew out of a desire to promote crossborder relations between young people through enterprise, and Dundalk has hosted the event annually ever since.

Local men take top roles in Students Union

DKIT students voted in their new president and vice president last week with Aaron Lawless and Paddy Duffy coming out on top after a gruelling week on the campaign trail.

nod for Student Union president while Louth Village man Paddy will take up the vice president role. Both men were delighted and honoured to be voted in by their peers and have promised to be available at all times for every student in the college when they take up their roles in July.

“We will both be in our final year in DkIT next year so we feel that we are both well positioned to see what works in DkIT and what doesn’t”, explained Aaron.

“It’s a fantastic opportunity for myself and Paddy and we will be working very closely throughout the next academic year to ensure we do the very best for students in DkIT. It’s a huge responsibility and I

actually think the role of president is a two man job which means Paddy and myself will be working as a team next year”, added Aaron.

“We both worked really hard during our election campaigns and the buzz when we heard our names called out was unreal. It was just a feeling of relief and excitement and we both are really looking forward to getting in there and giving everything we have to the role.”

Paddy, who is in his third year of an accounting and finance course will also be responsible for entertainment and student welfare and insists that both himself and Aaron will operate an open door policy in their new roles.

“There’s lots of issues

that we want to raise and we want students to be more open about mental health awareness and offer them an ear if they’re feeling down or if they have financial troubles or any other problems that are prevalent for students in DkIT”, promised Paddy.

“Myself and Aaron feel we are very approachable and we plan on reintroducing shag week which promotes sexual awareness and health and we generally want to continue the good work Brian Fitzpatrick and Paddy O’Rourke have done over the last two years in the job.

After an exhaustive campaign trail both men will focus on their studies before taking up their positions in the students union office in July.

St Patrick Day Parade winners The organisers of this year’s hugely successful St Patrick’s Day parade thanked all those who came out to support the parade as well as all participants who helped bring excitement and colour to the streets of Dundalk.

All the entrants went above and beyond in their efforts of interpreting this year’s theme of “Myth’s Magic and Miracles” which resulted in some amazing floats, choreography and also great costumes. It wasn’t an easy decision for the judges to pick the winners in this years parade such was the high standard of entrants.

Winners: The Best Overall Parade Entry for the St. Patrick’s Day Parade 2015 was the Kilkerley Community for their combined efforts by the Kilkerley National School/ Kilkerley Brownies & Ladybirds. Ranking in second place was St Mary’s College and in third was Simul Polonia Association.

There were great efforts from our dance troupes showing off their wonderful routines during the parade in the Best Choreography category with third place being awarded to Dance Kids and Second to Funky Feet but Scoil Rince Mona Ní Rodaigh stole the show with their performance taking first place.

Best Musical Entry was awarded to the Dublin All Star Marching Band.

Best Commercial entry went to Moffett Engineering who had a wide range of their equipment on display and went to great lengths to depict this year’s theme.

Best Services/Voluntary entry went to the Dundalk Fire Service.

Best Community Group/Club was the Friary Youth Club and the Spirit of the Parade was awarded to Simul Polonia Association.

Information on outdoor pursuits This Saturday, March 28, some of Dundalk’s outdoor pursuit clubs will get together to host an open day in the Crowne Plaza from 2pm to 6pm.

The event represents an opportunity for anyone with an interest in running, walking, triathlons or cycling (leisure, BMX, mountain biking or road racing) to come along and get some more information on joining and finding out about some of the great events taking place locally.

Cuchulainn Cycling Club, The Wee Binnions Walking Club, Setanta Triahlon Club and Blackrock AC will all be represented, and will be able to answer any questions people may have that wish to take the first steps towards getting more active.

Each of these clubs will have members on hand who are there to pass on their knowledge and experience in getting started in these sports.

DUNDALK is well represented in this year’s Texaco Children’s Art Competition with entries having been received from talented young students across the county.

The work, entitled ‘December Days’, was submitted by 17-yearold Meghan Reid, a pupil at St Vincent’s Secondary School.

Brian scores another golf victory BRIAN Ward’s impressive start to the 2015 season continued at Dundalk Golf Club on Sunday when he destroyed the field to win the Knights of Malta Cup by an impressive three shot margin.

Ward, who was second last week and won the previous Sunday, shot an eight under par

64, off 16, in the first major strokeplay event of the season to win comfortably from a group of players on 67.

Best of these was 12-handicapper Ollie English, who took second place on countback thanks to a five under par 31 over the back nine.

has also had a good start to the season won Category 1 ahead off teenager Josh Mackin who shot 68 to follow up his score of 41pts for third place on St Patrick’s Day. David Brennan edged out Pat Donaghy on countback for the Category 2 prize while Tom Clarke was a com-

fortable winner of the Category 3 prize after shooting 67 off 18.

Padraig McDonnell made a welcome return to winning ways on St Patrick’s Day when he shot 42 points with his back nine score of 22 points good enough to edge him home on countback from Paschal Keenan.

A 19-year-old man who admitted making an error when driving a friend home was disqualified from driving for three years after admitting a drink driving offence.

Oscar Norkus of 8 Grange Close, Muirhevnamor, Dundalk was also fined €500 after pleading guilty to the offence on February 8, last year.

Gardai were called to an incident where the defendant clipped another vehicle while reversing into a space.

After speaking to Mr Norkus he was taken to Dundalk Garda Station where a blood sample showed he was over the limit.

Solictor for the defendant stated that the client, who was not insured, had purchased the car the previous day and he added that Mr Norkus had drink taken and made an error in driving a friend home. He apologised to the court.

adult learners Students honoured at faith awards LMETB take to the TV screen P On Wednesday March 11 hundreds of people both young and old attended St. Patrick’s Cathedral Armagh for the Diocesan Faith Award Ceremony.

Among them were St Louis students, Shauna Armstrong, Aisling McEnteggart, Eimear Byrne and Caoimhe Watters.

This event was celebrated by Archbishop Eamon Martin and it was set up in order to rejoice in the gifts and talents of 300 young people who were there to collect awards for their role in their respective parishes, communities and schools.

Ban postponed to allow man sit driving test A man who is facing a threeyear driving disqualification had the ban postponed to allow him sit his driving test.

Michael Alder of 205 Glenwood, Dublin Road, Dundalk, made the appeal to Judge Flann Brennan when he appeared at the local district

court to plead guilty to a drink driving charge.

Insp Martin Beggy stated that on June 18, 2014, Gardai on patrol had their attention drawn to a car coming out of Gort na Glaise in Blackrock.

They spoke to the driver who was taken to Dundalk

Garda Station where a breath specimen showed he was over the limit for driving.

The defence solicitor stated that the 24-year-old, who had a provisional licence, is originally from Nigeria but has been living here for 13 years.

He has a history of working

since he left school but is now unemployed.

The father of a two-year-old also helps his mother raise his younger siblings.

Judge Brennan imposed a three-year disqualification from September 10 this year along with a €250 fine.

Pupils inspired by music Young woman was going down the wrong road

On December 14th last, Setanta choir joined the winners of the choral bursary, Réalt na Mara National School, for a wonderful concert in The Redemptorist Church Dundalk. The proceeds of this concert were handed over to the school by Setanta’s Director Una Murphy at a presentation on Thursday last.

The idea of the choral bursary came about as Setanta was looking for some way to commemorate 35 years of singing. They decided to celebrate by passing on the joy of singing to the next generation, and following a selection process Réalt na Mara School were chosen as the worthy winners.

Over the course of the bursary, the staff and students of Réalt na Mara all benefited from the expertise of vocal coach Alan Leech. Alan brought his love of music to each classroom within the school and in particular to the school choir. The result of this

A Dundalk woman was placed on Probation for 12 months after pleading guilty to four theft charges at the local district court.

Nora McDonagh of 2 Afton Drive, Greenacres, Dundalk, admitted the offences which took place between September 13 and October 11 last year.

On the first date she entered Home Store and More where she put a number of bedding items valued at €156 in a basket and left without paying.

paring for their next concert, in aid of the Redemptorist Church Organ Restoration Fund. They will join with St. Joseph’s Senior Choir to perform the much loved choral work, Fauré’s Requiem along with other choral classics.

On October 9 Ms McDonagh entered Dunnes in Ard Easmuinn with a sibling and pointed out a number of items of clothing which her sibling put in a bag. The items were valued at €99.

Two days later at the same location she concealed items valued at €77 in a bag and left without paying. Also on October 11 at Tesco, Long Walk, the defendant took three video games valued at €179. The property was recovered.

Solicitor, Dermot Monahan, stated that the young woman was going down the wrong road.

“She left school at 14 and had no Junior Certificate while her father was not a positive influence on her and had been in and out of prison”, he stated.

Mr Monahan added that the Probation Service felt that his client could be steered in the right direction, and Judge Flann Brennan placed Ms McDonagh on Probation for 12 months.

A woman who had taken a drink but thought she was okay to drive crashed into the back of a vehicle at traffic lights after being distracted.

As a result, Deirdre McCaughey of Claremount Manor, Blackrock, was disqualified from driving for three years after pleading guilty to a drink

driving charge at Dundalk District Court.

On April 19 last year, the 52-year-old defendant was driving from Blackrock to Dundalk when she drove into a vehicle at the Xerox traffic lights.

Gardai attended the scene and due to her condition, she

was taken to Dundalk Garda Station and a blood sample showed that she was over the limit.

Solicitor, Tara Matthews, stated that her client, who is single, was going to visit her parents in the early evening.

She had taken a drink earlier but thought she was okay. She

was distracted and drove into the other vehicle, but that issue had been sorted by the insurance.

She added that this was the first time her client was in court.

Judge Flann Brennan imposed a €300 fine along with the three-year ban.

By Paul Byrne The Navvy Bank was a popular spot for amateur photographers last Friday morning as they prepared to take pictures of the solar eclipse.

Brendan Connolly from St Alphonsus Road was determined to capture some images of the rare phenomenon and headed down to Soldier’s Point on the Point Road at 8.30 am with camera in hand.

“It was pretty cloudy when I got down to the Navvy Bank at 8:30am but thankfully it cleared up a bit and I got to capture some nice images of the eclipse when it began at about 9:30am.

“I don’t really remember the last one in 1999 so I’m delighted that I can now say that I

have seen a solar eclipse. Hopefully I’ll still be around in 2026 and I can head down to the Navvy bank and do

it all again”, he added.

Brendan, a keen wildlife photographer is a regular visitor to the Navvy Bank where he takes snaps of local birds and sea creatures.

According to the St Alphonsus Road man Dundalk is a great place for capturing images of rare birds and beautiful wildlife.

A solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes between Earth and the Sun, thereby totally or partially obscuring Earth’s view of the Sun. Partial eclipses are relatively common occurring every two or three years but a total eclipse as seen on Friday morning are a lot more rare.

Driver should not have been on the road

A man who admitted that he shouldn’t have been on the road was banned from driving for three years after pleading guilty to a drink driving charge at Dundalk District Court.

Alan Molloy of 26 Headford, Mount Avenue, Dundalk, was also fined €300 as a result of the incident on November 16, 2014.

On that date, Gardai were called to an accident involving car and a pedestrian and after

speaking to the driver, Mr Molloy, he was taken to Dundalk Garda Station. A breath specimen showed he was over the limit for driving.

Solicitor for the defendant, stated that his client, who had a previous drink driving conviction in 2009, should not have been on the road on this particular evening but that he had gone to collect somebody.

“He has had an issue with alco-

hol in the last few month. He was the principal carer for his father who suffered from Parkinsons and his father died in March.

“He took it badly and sought comfort in the wrong way”, added the solicitor who revealed that the 47-year-old single man as sought help in dealing with his issues.

Judge Flann Brennan imposed a three-year disqualification to commence on June 21.

Under-10s turn in another sparkling display of rugby The Dundalk U10 Sharks hosted their Navan counterparts on a glorious Sunday morning in the Rugby Club.

Navan sent two teams so Dundalk split their very healthy squad of 29 players into two equal teams The White Sharks got their proceedings off to a slightly hesitant start as they fell behind to two early tries. Calum Lambe and Max Valentine soon helped turn things around with some crunching tackles.

Senan McCarthy and Ben Cahill were chief benefactors of these and focused Navan’s defence with some surging runs.

An example of the Sharks’ growing dominance was no better displayed than when a fantastic passing sequence involving Keelan Carroll and Fionn Connolly put Donal Lavery away to score a five-pointer in the corner. Navan attempted to mount a comeback but unfortunately for them they couldn’t cope with the tackling powerhouse of Bobby McCaul.

The tiring legs of the opposition were finally put to the sword when Luke O’Connell gathered the ball deep in his own half but after bouncing off some would-be tacklers touched down for a tre-

mendous score.

The lads were in their groove right from the off in their second match. Oisin McBride led the Navan defence on a merry dance on numerous occasions with some dazzling runs.

David Coyle and Oisin Nash played their parts in the teams performance with some very direct running and aggressive tackling. Try of the match came after some fine continuity play from the Sharks resulted in Conor Whyte making a dash up the pitch. He then had the presence of mind to time his pass to perfection to allow the ever dangerous Liam O’Connor scamper over the whitewash to notch a brilliant team score.

whistle by moving the ball quickly from side to side at a ferocious pace. Cian McGuiness was a thorn in Navan’s side all morning with his brilliant running and offloading. Daniel Gregory and Dale Meehan linked the play wonderfully which allowed Jacob Dunlevy and Rory Wallace to do their stuff.

DD Reilly was inspirational from scrum half and dictated the play intelligently which in turn allowed Eoin Purton to hit gaps in the opposition’s defence and cement the home team’s dominance.

The second match was a closer affair and the Sharks needed some great work at the breakdown from Darragh Collier, Conor McCabe and Oran Rafferty to quell the opposition.

Navan did breach the home defence on one ocassion but a thunderous tackle from Euan McArdle thwarted their efforts.

This inspired the lads and soon Ewan Kelly and Eamon Donnelly were really piling the pressure onto the Navan lads with ‘Sean O Brien’ type runs. The returning Michael Carroll shown his injury lay-off has not lessened his searing pace with some electrifying tries.

When Navan did attempt to string some phases together, they unfortunately discovered that Ryan Martin was not in a charitable mood as he rebuffed countless attacks with some merciless tackling.

Dispute in taxi led to assault charge Dundalk into A dispute between passengers over a taxi route home in the early hours of the morning which appeared to conclude on amicable terms, resulted in one of the parties facing assault charges at Dundalk District Court.

Conor McKeever of 13 Farndreg, Dundalk, denied assaulting Erica McQuillan at the Carrick Road on January 12 last year, and the case against him was dismissed by Judge Flann Brennan who ruled that the evidence presented created a doubt.

Ms McQuillan stated that on the date in question she got into the front of a mini-bus taxi

when another passenger started arguing with her over whether they would stop first at Farndreg or Beechmount Drive.

The driver had stated that it would be Beechmount Drive first, but the argument continued with the other passenger asking Ms McQuillan who she was.

“I said who I was and then he (Mr McKeever) said I was Christopher McQuillan’s mother and he got up and hit me”, said Ms McQuillan, with the defendant saying that her son had broken into their family home some years previous.

She added that when she got out at Beechmount Drive,

Mr McKeever apologised and when she went into the house she called the Gardai. The injured party stated that she was struck on the face with a fist and suffered soft tissue damage under her eye.

The taxi driver gave evidence that after the argument the defendant “tried to grab” the woman but he didn’t see a closed fist. He added that when he stopped at Beechmount Drive the man also got out and the pair embraced. He heard the woman ask him in for tea but he declined.

The defendant admitted that he grabbed Ms McQuillan’s wrists but that was to protect

his girlfriend who was involved in the initial argument. He accepted that he might have accidentally hit her on the face.

He said he apologised for shouting about her son but he thought they parted on good terms after she left the taxi.

Judge Brennan stated that he had no doubt that Ms McQuillan sustained an injury on the night but how it happened was another matter.

“It is unfortunate that all the witnesses had an amount of alcohol consumed with the sole exception of the taxi driver and on the basis of what I have heard and I have a doubt and must dismiss”, he added.

Town’s Cup semi-final

DUNDALK beat Portarlington 46-3 in the towns cup quarter final on Sunday last at the Mill Road to adavance to the semi-final where they will host Enniscorthy on April 5.

Tu’ipulotu Nuku and Tiernan Gonnolly had outstanding games in defense while James MC Connon, M J McKevitt and Chris Scully led the attack. Dundalk’s forwards and backs linked well and support play from the back row with Stephen Martin covering all to of ground.

Dundalk’s opening try came from a combined forwards effort. Enda Murphy being credited with grounding the ball. Converted by Ultan Murphy and after four minutes Dundalk were under way.

The line out too proved strong for Dundalk, a clean line out posession and ball through the hands saw Chris Scully open up a gap and crossed the line for Dundalk’s second try.

Soon after Mike Bentley found himself with a ball in some space and nothing could stop the powerful second row from scoring. Ultan Murphy then found his way across the tryline to give Dundalk a 23-3 lead.

Early in the second half Owen McNally made it over the line to score again for Dundalk. Soon after Chris Scully struck again and scored his second. In the end the game was never really in doubt, Dundalk comfortable winners in the end.

Next week the round robin play-offs start with Dundalk playing the Belfast side and Ulster league winners Instonians away.

Dundalk school in line for Sky Sports award O Fiaich College, Dundalk has been shortlisted for the Sky Sports Living for Sport Project of the Year award. The Louth school is one of five schools, and the only Irish school, to have been nominated for the Project of the Year award for their involvement in Sky Academy initiative, Sky Sports Living for Sport.

The Awards celebrate the outstanding achievements of students, teachers and schools that have used the skills learned through sport to build confidence and develop life skills by taking part in Sky Sports Living for Sport.

The Project of the Year winner is set to be announced later this month along with the Student of the Year winners from England, Scotland, Wales, Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland and the Teacher of the Year.

The Sky Sports Living for Sport Awards will be broadcast on Sky Sports 1 on Sunday 29 March 2015 at 7.30pm where an overall UK & Ireland Project of the Year winner will be announced. The show will also rec-

ognise the outstanding contributions of students and teacher with awards for Student of the Year and Teacher of the Year.

Having noticed an increase in behavioural problems and students lacking motivation and self-belief within school, O Fiaich College set up a Sky Sports Living for Sport project to encourage goal-setting and raise motivation levels.

At the start of the project, each student set their own goal and outlined how they planned on improving themselves both physically and behaviourally in the coming 10 weeks.

Each Wednesday, the group worked on a different sport – from rugby union and football to boxing and tennis – and the students’ involvement and enthusiasm throughout was unprecedented compared with any previous extra-curricular activity the school had carried out.

By the end of the 10 weeks, all 19 students had improved their attendance in school and have since steered clear of any kind of misbehaviour.

One student whose attendance was only 20% before getting involved with Sky Sports Living for Sport was particularly affected and did not miss a single day throughout the project.

The valuable life skills which all of the students picked up throughout have been put into practice outside of the project, too, and the whole group now has a more mature outlook on life.

Discussing O Fiaich College’s nomination teacher Brendan O’Malley said, “Being nominated for Project of the Year is an amazing honour. This nomination highlights the hard work and effort shown by all students and further highlights that effort and positive attitude, results in success.

“The group of students are an amazing bunch of young people and are overwhelmed with this accolade. We have had many memorable experiences throughout this project, and this is another. The students are now looking forward to traveling to London for the final leg of this unforgettable year.”

Louth came out third in a table showing the amount of claims made to the injuries board with a total of €11.8m coming into the county through compensation.

The county in Ireland with the most awards as per head of population last year was Limerick.

It accounts for 4.18% of Ireland’s total population and 7.67% of awards. It was followed

by Longford, Louth, Dublin and Galway.

Last year there were 31,576 claims across the country, with 516

of them occurring in Louth.

The county with the fewest awards as per head of population last year was Kilkenny, with it accounting for 2.08% of Ireland’s total population and 0.98% of the total awards given.

The average for payouts in Louth totalled a whopping €11.8m with an average payout of €22,871 for the 516 claims. That average of €22,871 was slightly higher than the national average of €22,642.

Of the 516 claims the vast majority were awarded with respect to

car accidents, with 405 claims were car related, 79 were for public liability while 32 were for employer liabilities.

The remit of InjuriesBoard.ie, which was set up in 2004 by the Irish government, is to assess claims for compensation for anyone who has been in an accident and suffered an injury.

A self-funded entity, InjuriesBoard.ie assesses claims for compensation without the need for many costs and fees usually associated with personal injury claims.

For example, in the majority of cases it is not

necessary to instruct a solicitor to pursue a personal injury claim.

Speaking about the performance, the board’s chief executive, Patricia Byron, said: “While the volume of new claims stabilised last year, the increase in the number of awards made by the board is a clear indication that more respondents, typically insurers, are opting to engage with our low cost claims resolution service and recognise the value of avoiding costly litigation where uncontested claims are concerned”.

Enterprising students were out in force on Friday as the annual Dundalk CrossBorder Student Enterprise Trade Fair took place in the Marshes Shopping Centre.

The event, which is organised by Dundalk Grammar School Transition Year students, saw many of the region’s budding entrepreneurs display their wares to interested shoppers, with a total of 32 stalls on show.

As ususal, a wide range of goods were available from hair products, to hats, T-shirts, and

the latest in technology. For those who needed to take a break from the hectic shopping, there was also a coffee shop providing a great range of drinks and snacks.

The event saw pupils from the Grammar School joined by TY students from the De La Salle and St Louis, while schools from Drogheda, Lurgan and Kilkeel were also represented.

A man who was using a roundabout to show off his driving skills admitted that at his age he should have known better when he pleaded guilty to careless driving charges at Dundalk District Court.

Roman Prokopjev of 11 Chestnut Grove, Bay Estate, Dundalk, visited the roundabout at Feede on five occasions between December 22, 2013, and January 13, 2014, along with a number of other people to take part in what was described as ‘drifting’.

Insp Martin Beggy described the activity as “wheel spinning and using the roundabout to show off his driving skills”.

A witness heard the screeching from his house and went to the roundabout where he took the number of the car involved. The same witness observed the activity on five days. Mr Prokopjev, who had previously been disqualified for drink driving, admitted being in the area on the dates in question.

Insp Beggy stated that nobody was put out by the activity but it did constitute careless driving on a public road.

Solicitor, Frank McDonnell, stated that his client had attended the station voluntarily and has not been at the location since.

He added that the 26-year-old Lithuanian,, who has been in Ireland for nine years and is in employment, didn’t realise that this activity would result in prosecution.

“There were a number of people there at the time and this is what they did when idle. At 26 he should know better as he is not 17”, added Mr McDonnell who asked the court to deal with the matter as careless driving rather than dangerous driving.

Judge Flann Brennan convicted in relation to the offence on January 10, 2014, taking the others into consideration as he imposed a €250 fine.

Medal success for Team Torres

Ryan McCartney Dundalk, Aaron Devlin Derry and Andrew McGahon Dundalk of Team Torres

Five Members of the Dundalk Team Torres Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Competition Team, Andrew McGahon, Ryan McCartney, Barry Quaile, Stephen Kilcommins, and Aaron Goodman competed in the Dublin City BJJ Open last weekend which was held in the SBG gym which is home to UFC star Conor McGregor.

First up in the teenage section was Aaron Goodman, this was his first competition outing having only just recently began training in the art of BJJ and whilst Aaron was unlucky this time out he nonetheless gained valuable competition experience and displayed huge potential in the process.

Next it was the turn of Stephen

Kilcommins who displayed his usual heart and skill defeating his first opponent with relative ease and starting his second bout in a similar vein with a dominating performance but unfortunately became unstuck in the dying seconds when he was unlucky to be caught with a triangle choke from guard.

Next was Barry Quaile who was very unlucky to be drawn against the eventual winner and after a slow start Barry settled and started to hit his grove and demonstrated why his coaches believe it is only a matter of time before Barry is standing on the podium such is his level of ability and potential.

In the adult division seasoned

competitors Andrew McGahon and Ryan McCartney dismantled their opponents with ease against some very tough competition to earn their rightful places on the podium by clinching Bronze and Silver respectively. Andrew is no stranger to national and International competition as he continues to develop and improve his skill set with a fantastic display of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in the semi finals where he lost out to the eventual winner.

Last up was Ryan McCartney who only recently turned eighteen and continues to make waves in the adult division where he stormed through his section before narrowly losing out in the final.

DkIT to host 2015 CIRCOM Annual Conference in Dundalk Preparations are underway as Dundalk prepares to welcome representatives from TV stations all across Europe for the annual CIRCOM Conference. CIRCOM is the European Association of Regional Television.

This will be the first time that the conference has been held in Ireland and approximately 300 delegates are expected to travel to Dundalk for the three-day event from May 20 to 25.

The conference sessions will take place on the campus of Dundalk Institute of Technology (DkIT), with events also taking place in the Oriel Centre, Dundalk Gaol and An Táin Arts Centre.

The theme of the conference is ‘Challenge. Regions. Future.’ and during the three-day event, attendees will examine the changing face of both journalism and broadcasting along with the challenges faced by regional media outlets across Europe with sessions such as ‘Mind Your Language? Pressures and challenges of minority languages and possible solutions from technology advances’ and ‘Social Media: Making Us or Breaking Us?’, amongst others.

The Creative Media Section is DkIT’s lead in the organisation and hosting of the conference. The suite of programmes in this area has expanded greatly in recent years and now includes programmes in Film & Television Production, Media Arts & Technologies, Communications in Creative Media, Theatre & Film Practice, Multimedia Web Development, Digital Animation Production and 3D for Games, amongst others.

Speaking at the announcement that the conference was to take place in Ireland for the first time, the Head of Creative Media at DkIT, Sarah McCann, said “Co-hosting this conference with RTÉ marks a huge milestone in the development of Creative Media as a core discipline area within DKIT and in our developing partnership with RTÉ.

We hope to continue this cross collaboration with our national broadcaster in other areas such as content and training initiatives and future professional practice course development and delivery”.

Speaking about their involvement with the conference, Kay Webster, Manager of the Oriel Centre, Dundalk

Gaol has stated that: “Hosting the launch of the CIRCOM conference within the historic setting of Dundalk Gaol in May provides us with the opportunity to showcase the regional work of Comhaltas Ceoltoirí Éireann as a recent recipient of the European Citizens Prize. It also strengthens our working relationships with DkIT with whose Campus Engage Programme we are already involved, and RTÉ with whom Comhaltas have collaborated successfully for many years”.

On Thursday evening May 21, guests will enjoy the Prix CIRCOM Gala Awards (the ‘Oscars’ of European Regional Television) which honours the best European regional productions in the genres of Music (new this year), Documentary, Rising Star, Minorities in Society, Video Journalism, Most Original, Magazine and News Magazine, Investigative Journalism. There will also be a Grand Prix award for the “Best of the Best” of the above categories. Irish culture and music will also feature prominently throughout the award ceremony in An Táin Arts Centre which will be streamed live on the CIRCOM website.

Hunters gearing up for Leprechaun chase On Sunday March 29 the Leprechaun Hunt on Slieve Foy, Carlingford, will welcome thousands of hunters, big and small, for the National Leprechaun Hunt in Carlingford in their quest to find one of the wee green men during this fun family day out.

The event has captured the nation’s imagination since the official designation of Slieve Foy Mountain as an EU

Special Protection Area for Little People in 2010.

Over 20 years ago, the suit and bones of a leprechaun were found on The Slieve Foy mountain by the late, well known businessman PJ O Hare. He discovered them after hearing a faint crying and when he went to investigate, he was shocked to find the suit of a leprechaun, along with bones and 4

gold coins.

This sparked the original Leprechaun Hunt which was held on the Easter Sunday of 1989, attracting thousands of visitors to the region.

Prospecting licences will be sold on the day at €5 per person and registration begins at 1pm. Only carriers of authenticated licences will be allowed on the mountain that day.

Acclaimed dancer set for Dundalk show Acclaimed Chicago dancer, Nic Gareiss, will appear at the Spirit Store on April 2 at 8.30pm.

Since 2007, having spent a year studying Irish traditional music and dance at the Irish World Academy in

the University of Limerick, Gareiss has become a darling of the Irish arts scene, having already garnered huge acclaim for his work with the US Footworks Percussive Dance Ensemble.

The Pulp & Print workshops with Rehab Care in Creative Spark were a tremendous success. Participants greatly enjoyed mucking in and making their own paper from scratch.

They learnt screen print techniques and printed two beautiful banners on display for one more week in Creative Spark. These workshops were part of the county wide Feast of Words event raising awareness of the positive benefits of the arts for our mental and physical well-being.

Twenty children and their parents took part in Easter crafts at the Mobile Art Unit run by Creative Spark outside Cuidigh Linn, Muirhevnamor last Thursday.

Creative Spark will be bringing their mobile art unit to a new location each month, next month it’s in Cox’s Demesne. Creative Spark would like to say a special thanks to Cuidigh Linn for welcoming them to their street.

The new term of courses is fast approaching. Places are filling up fast and people are urged to book their place soon to avoid disappointment.

workshops begins next month including Photopolymer Etching, Social Media Training, Felt Making, Letterpress & Bookbinding, Sculpting the head in clay, Printing on Tea Towels and Collograph Print. Three discounted places are available on all the courses for unemployed people.

A consultation with the local community by the lead artist for the DKIT Re-Imaging Community project took place in Creative Spark on Monday 23rd. The meeting was held to get the communities ideas for naming the piece of sculpture being created for the college campus.
