Dundalk FC’s brave bid to reach the Champions League group stages fell just short despite a heroic display against Legia Warsaw on Tuesday night. The Oriel Park men were given very little chance when they travelled to the Polish Army Stadium against a starstudded home side, but after another typically brave and skilful display they gave the Polish champions a mighty scare in a game that eventually finished level at 1-1. A stunning strike from Robbie Benson on 19 minutes had Dundalk very much in the game and their hopes increased when Hlousek was sent off at the start of the final quarter. The League of Ireland champions, who didn’t show any signs of an inferiority

complex at any time on the big stage, battled bravely until the end but couldn’t manage to force an equaliser despite creating a couple of half chances. It wasn’t until the game ticked into injury time that Stephen Kenny’s side had their fate sealed when Kucharczyk got on the end of a quick counter attack to fire home the goal that booked his side’s place in the draw for the group stages. The 30,000 enthusiastic supporters who packed into the stadium in anticipation of a party, left with a huge feeling of relief that they managed to sneak past a side who have done their town and country proud.
