There were terrifying scenes at Sunday’s annual Blessings of the Graves ceremony in Dowdallshill as a car drove at speed through the crowded graveyard. A man was seriously injured in the incident while a number of others received minor injuries.

The man who was injured is a grandfather and was rushed to Our Lady of Lourdes hospital in Drogheda with a head injury before being transferred to Beaumont Hospital.

After the incident, the dark coloured car drove out of the cemetery and collided with a number of parked cars on the road outside before coming to a stop.

28 year old James McDonagh from Glenmore Park in Muirhevnamor was arrested at the scene.

He appeared in Drogheda district court yesterday morning and has been remanded in custody to apear at Cloverhill District Court next Tuesday.

Kate O’Connor makes history in Sweden

Dundalk’s Kate O’Connor made history in Sweden last weekend when she became the first Irish athlete to medal at an international heptathlon.

Kate was in inspired form during the European U20 Championships in Boras and produced a particular incredible performance in the javelin where she threw 52.92m which was the second best Irish mark of all time. That broke her own personal best by 3.61 metres and really put

her in the mix for a medal. Earlier in the competition the talented eighteen-year old also clocked PB’s in the high jump (1.81ms) and the 200m’s (24.82) Going into the final event, the 800 metres, Kate was assured of a medal and it was just a question of what colour it would be. The St Gerard’s AC athlete ran a fantastic race and looked like she may snatch gold when she led her two rivals with a hundred metres to go. However, she was overtaken by Spanish athlete

Maria Vicente who shaved six seconds off her previous best to claim first in the overall standings.

Kate was understandably delighted with her best ever performance in an international championship and afterwards she expressed how proud she was of her achievement.

“Coming round the bend with a 100 to go Maria overtook me I kind of thought I know I have to keep going to make sure I get silver and I just give it everything I had to get that medal. Thankfully I did it and I’m

just so proud of myself. It’s amazing to think that I’m the first ever heptathlete to win a medal at a major championship and I can’t actually explain what just happened. It hasn’t even fully sunk in yet and I’m just so happy and so excited and really looking forward to seeing what the future holds,” stated a delighted Kate.

The talented heptathlete returned home to a packed Dublin airport on Monday evening where she was greeted by friends and family as she proudly showed off her silver medal. Kate O’Connor receiving her silver medal.

Mayhem at Blessings of the Graves

The lack of gardaí at Sunday’s Blessing of the Graves ceremony has been widely criticised following an incident which saw a car drive through the graveyard at speed. A Dundalk grandfather was seriously injured during the incident while a number of others received minor injuries.

Fianna Fáil councillor Conor Keelan stated that it was a miracle that nobody was killed during the incident and called for discussions to begin

to ensure that there will be a garda presence at the ceremony going forward.

“I was shocked upon my arrival to the graveyard to see that there was absolutely no garda presence and no traffic management plan,” noted Cllr Keelan. “I don’t think that there is a civil event in Dundalk throughout the year that attracts so many people and it defies logic that there was no gardaí at the event. My immediate re-

action was one of shock and anger that somebody would contemplate getting into a car and putting so many people’s lives at risk. There were so many young children at the event and so many people who were absolutely terrified as the events unfolded. I hope the individual apprehended faces the full rigours of the law and extend sincere sympathy to all those injured at the driver’s hand.

A nine-year-old girl had a lucky escape at the blessings of the graves when she jumped out of the car just before which was used in the terrifying incident at last Sunday’s Blessing of the Graves.

The nine-year old’s cousin, Aoibheann Dixon, praised the youngster for her quick thinking and stated that it was a miracle that more people weren’t seriously injured or killed in the incident.

“What happened was my aunt left her car in the cemetery beside the jumbo skip during the Blessing of the Graves.

My nine-year old cousin wanted to sit in the car as she wasn’t feeling well from the journey up to Dundalk from Banbridge and Belfast. My aunt (her nanny) said she could sit in the car as the grave they were attending was just three feet away from where the car was parked.

“The wee girls mammy was walking up towards the car to check if her daughter was ok and she seen the car moving and she immediately started shouting!

Her daughter realized she didn’t know the person in the front seat and quickly jumped out of the car thank God. “The car went around the graveyard and another family member was banging the back of the car to plead with the man to stop and he wouldn’t. She was near killed. Then as he went on he nearly hit my mother. Literally if my mother had waited a split second longer to jump out of the way we would have been either in the hospital or a funeral parlour at the minute.

“My wee cousin is absolutely traumatized by the whole event and

it is terrible for anybody to go through that. For her to have the sense to jump out so quickly She deserves an award for having the sense to jump out of the car so quickly,” stated Aoibheann.

“It was a terrible act that happened yesterday and I hope that the man responsible gets everything he deserves.

My aunt has lost all her belongings, handbags, phone, money, sentimental belongings. Stuff that can be replaced and stuff that can’t but the main thing is that the girl had the sense to jump out or we would all be in a very hard and sad situation today,” added a relieved Aoibheann.

Meanwhile, the man accused of the alleged incident has been named as James McDonagh with an address of Glenmore Park, Muirhevnamor in Dundalk.

He appeared in Drogheda district court facing a charge of the unlawful use of a car and one of dangerous driving.

Garda Sean O’Callaghan gave evidence ofarrest and charges and gardai objected to bail being given. Judge ermot Dempsey remanded Mr McDonagh in custody to appear at Cloverhill District Court next Tuesday.

If Council officials are unwilling to ban all motor vehicles driving into the cemetery (bar those with the infirm) on Graveyard Sunday in the interest of public safety then Councillors need to be allowed make the appropriate bye-laws.

“I also want to commend the lady up on the podium who was saying the rosary and also Fr Mark O’Hagan who both remained calm and gave concise clear instructions to all patrons asking them to stay off the footpaths and to remain at their graves. My main focus now is to begin talks with all relevant bodies to ensure that there is a proper garda presence at next year’s ceremony,” he stated.

Meanwhile Louth County Council have released a statement pointing out that although they are in charge for the upkeep and maintenance of St Patrick’s they were not responsible for operational events on the day including traffic control, security and first aid services.

“On Behalf of Louth County Council we wish a speedy and full recovery to the individual injured at yesterday’s Annual Blessing of the Graves in Dundalk.

Louth County Council is responsible for the upkeep and maintenance of the St Patrick’s Cemetery, Dowdallshill, Dundalk. The County Council have been responsible for this work since the abolishment of the Dundalk Joint Burial Board in 2014. The works include on-going repairs and upgrade to all the facilities in the cemetery; the preparation of all

graves for funerals and upkeep of the lawns and ensuring footpath and roadways in good condition.

The Annual Blessing of the graves ceremony is organised and hosted by the Catholic Parishes of Dundalk. The role of the County Council is to prepare the graveyard in advance for the annual event, and facilitate extended opening hours to allow family and friends of the deceased prepare the grave of their loved ones in advance of the ceremony. The Burial Board in the past did financially support the hire of the public address system and Louth County Council has continued this practice.

Other operational arrangements for the Annual event including traffic control, security and the provision of first aid services are the responsibility of the organisers,” concluded the statement.

Annagassan and District Historical Society’s next event is a history walk around the Bellingham Castle Estate.

There will be a visit to the spectacularly restored Coach Stables, the Garden House, the site of the original castle that burned down in 1690 and the site of the Knights Templar Abbey dating from the early 14th century. After a short history of the Bellingham family, Bryan will discuss the castle demesne landscaping and other estate features including the bowling green, the Horse Pond and the boathouse.

One million Italians will tune in to County Louth Images of Co Louth and Ireland will be beamed into the homes of around 1 million people across Italy at the end of this year, in a special Ireland episode of a popular documentary series called Freedom: Oltre il Confine (meaning ‘Freedom: Beyond the Border’). Filming for the programme is taking place here this week and is supported by Tourism Ireland and Fáilte Ireland.

Freedom: Oltre il Confine airs on Italia1 – a major national TV channel – and involves the presenters travelling around

the world to experience the history and culture of different countries. The two-hour programme dedicated to Ireland will highlight our rich heritage and culture. The film crew has been capturing footage at the Carlingford Dominican Friary and at the Leprechaun and Fairy Cavern.

The crew stayed in The Hotel Imperial in Dundalk.

Niamh Kinsella, Tourism Ireland’s Manager Italy, said: “We were delighted to invite the Freedom: Oltre il Confine crew to film in Co Louth and Ireland, to showcase some of our

lesser-known attractions and locations. The twohour documentary will be seen by around one million viewers – or potential Italian holidaymakers for Ireland – encouraging them to put Ireland on their holiday ‘wish-list’ for 2019.”

Tourism Ireland is rolling out an extensive programme of promotions in 2019, to continue to grow Italian visitor numbers to Ireland. The organisation is placing a greater focus on driving growth to less visited attractions and locations, as well as on driving business in the off-peak

and shoulder seasons.

Niamh Kinsella continued: “Television and film are recognised as strong influencers for prospective holidaymakers and Tourism Ireland regularly works with TV and production companies in Italy and elsewhere around the world, to facilitate the making of travel and lifestyle programmes around the island of Ireland. This documentary is an excellent opportunity to showcase Co Louth and Ireland to our important ‘culturally curious’ audience in Italy.”

Blackrock Film Festival to take place next month

Blackrock Film Festival is the perfect quirky event to celebrate the end of the summer holidays. Now in its 4th year the four-day event takes place in number of cosy venues throughout the charming village of Blackrock starting Thursday 29th August and finishing Sunday 1st September.

The festival was a huge success last year when over 1000 people thronged the promenade beach on main street for an open-air Cinema On The Sand and enjoyed the thrills of “The Greatest Showman”.

The opening night on Thursday takes place the atmospheric 100 year old AOH hall on the edge of the village when we’ll be swept back in time with the 1923 classic “The Hunchback of Notre Dame“ with the original film score being accompanied live Mark Murphy and Cliodhna Quinlan. On Friday this year’s free spectacular free open air beach movie is another family favourite, the smash hit 70’s movie “Grease” with popular numbers by Olivia Newton John and John Travolta. Cavan

made movie “The Man Who Wanted To Fly” will be shown in the AOH on Saturday night and introduced by the man himself, Bobbie Coote. On Sunday evening, the romantic comic fantasy film, “Amelie” will be shown in the retro café/ bistro Rocksalt followed by an 80’s Blockbuster “Back to the Future” in the Neptune Bar to close out the festival.

The inspiration for the festival and the mammoth task of organising it is the work of Blackrock Tourism and Development Group of key traders in

the village who organise several events a year and are keen to see Blackrock develop as a visitor destination. C and Bistro open and a new 100 bedroom hotel nearby.

Chairperson Aine Corcoran acknowledges the support of Failte Ireland, Louth County Council and the Tidy Towns Blackrock in making the festival possible. ‘Future looks promising for Sruthan House- Peter Fitzpatrick TD’

Local Independent TD Peter Fitzpatrick held a meeting with Jude O’Neill Head of Social Care for the HSE Midlands and North East and his staff to discuss the reversion of closing Sruthan House.

The purpose of this meeting was to revert the HSE’s decision to close this vital service.

Speaking about Sruthan House Deputy Fitzpatrick said ‘people are dependant

of this service as there is nothing of this kind in the area. Sruthan House has operated for the past 23 years.

Some 400 families over the past number of years have benefited from this service with 50 families presently using it. ’ Families and service members also attended the meeting, one service member spoke about how he first attended Sruthan House when he was 7 years old and

described the service as a home from home.

This gentleman is now 31 years old and spoke fondly of how over the years Sruthan House has adapted to his care needs as they changed over time and have always met them. The service user has always felt that the level of care and attention he received over the years was exceptional and he felt that he would not receive that level of care anywhere else.

Another service user spoke about how he felt that it was a local service for local people and that if this service closed he would require a full medical team to get him to and from his destination.

Jude O’Neill Head of Social Care in the Midlands and North East said ‘it is not HSE policy to take away a service and part of what we need to do is work together’ It was an open and hon-

est discussion about Sruthan House among the HSE and the service users and Deputy Fitzpatrick. It costs on average €714 per night per bed however other similar facilities operate on average at €150 less. Deputy Fitzpatrick Sruthan House has been a flagship centre, one that has been regarded as excellent by HIQA following a routine inspection.

Fitzpatrick said ‘ if there was a problem, the flag should

have been raised.’ Deputy Fitzpatrick went on to discuss the cost of the service and highlighted that the current budget is too costly and it needs to be looked at in detail.

Jude O’Neill also said ‘we need to engage with the service users and others, take note of needs and make informed decision going forward’.

Speaking after the meeting Peter Fitzpatrick TD said ‘Sruthan House is an invaluable service which must be protected at all costs. I feel the meeting was positive, we have something that we can build on from here. A numbers of concerns have been raised, I feel that they need to be addressed but I feel that we can work through it together’.

German Bundestag Delegation visits Louth

Members of the Bavarian Conservative (CSU) Group of the German Bundestag visited Ireland recently. The delegation was headed by the chairperson of the CSU at the Bundestag Alexander Dobrindt and included Federal Minister of Transport and Digital Infrastructure Andreas Scheuer and Minister of State for Digitalisation Dorothee Bär. The political talks in Dublin focused on business, cultural and political matters and the impacts of Brexit. Travelling to Dundalk July 11, the delegation had the opportunity to get a first-hand impression of the implications of Brexit, the peace process and border communities. Welcoming the delegation, Cllr Liam Reilly expressed his gratitude to the group for choosing to visit Co Louth. Speakers at the event included Thomas Mc Evoy, Louth LEO; Alan Cunningham, An Garda Siochana and Sharon Digby, East Border Region Ltd.

Volunteers needed for Little Terns

Volunteers are being sought to help protect Little terns which are one of Irelands rarest breeding birds with just a few colonies around the coast.

These smallest of terns nest on the beach at Baltray just north of the mouth of the Boyne. Every year they arrive in May, make a nest on the beach, usually little more than a scrape, and lay two to three eggs.

By late June or early July the chicks hatch and after a few weeks fledge and prepare for their return migration to

west Africa in August. While their fortunes have been a bit mixed in the last few years, this year we have over 30 active nests and more than 50 chicks just hatched. To protect the colony we erect fencing around it, mainly to keep rodents, foxes and the like out of the area, but also to deter quad bikes, loose dogs and a range of other threats that may occur; in general walkers are very cooperative and keep their dogs on a leash.

“Together we aim to promote the beautiful coastline of Louth and the amazing quality local seafood we have to offer. Louth also has some amazing food festivals such as the Carlingford Oyster Festival and Taste of Togher which cel-

ebrate local food,” she stated: Rosemary Gallagher, Economic Development, Louth County Council added “Louth County Council is excited to be part of this great initiative which adds to our tourism offering and is another great reason to visit Louth and Ireland’s Ancient East, whilst promoting our fresh local seafood and superb local restaurants.”

Connor McCaughey produced a superb display of golf on Sunday to deservedly win Dessie Ward’s President’s Prize and add another victory to what is turning out to be a great season for the five handicapper.

He went around in one under par gross for a nett total of 66 and won by a shot from another low man, Alan McDermott (5) who shot level par gross for a 67 nett.

After opening with three straight pars, McCaughey was finally rewarded for his excellent driving and iron play on the index one fourth when he sank a 20ft birdie putt after a sublime eight iron approach.

Woodbrook came through the Dublin qualifier before beating Corrstown by one hole in the quarter-final.

Saturday’s event in Royal Tara clashes with the second last day of the South of Ireland Championship in Lahinch where Caolan Rafferty will be defending the title he won last year after spending the earlier part of the week at a Walker Cup panel session in Royal Liverpool.

Raffterty and the other Irish players on the Walker Cup squad have been given an exemption into the matchplay section of the South which starts on Friday so he is likely to be unavailable for Dundalk on Saturday.

Multicultural Day in Muirhevnamor

Eric Beggs back for seventh trek

Local fundraiser Eric Beggs will lead the Cooley Mountain Trek in aid of Fighting Blindness for a seventh year this August. The Lisdoo Road man has been a huge supporter of the Fighting Blindness charity over the last number of years and has raised well in excess of €100,000 for the charity.

He has organised various charity events such as Chapel gate collections, quizzes and sponsored walks with the Cooley Trek being the main source of fundraising each year. Eric was diagnosed with a retinal degenerative condition called retinitis pigmentosa (RP) which unfortunately can’t be cured. Eric

first started having difficulties with his sight in his early 20s and it has progressed to the stage that now in his sixties he is completely blind. He has been a keen supporter of the charity ‘Fighting Blindness’ and is a huge admirer of the work they do around the country.

“They are doing marvellous work in fighting blindness and I am absolutely convinced that they will have a treatment and cure for blindness in the very near future” explains Eric.

“Although it’s too late to help me I am determined to make sure that I can do as much as I can to ensure there is a cure for younger people who

have sight difficulties which is why I originally organised the Cooley Mountain Trek.

I have to say that people in Dundalk have been wonderful and I thank every one of them who has taken part in the walk over the last seven years. I’d like to thank all the sponsors and everybody who helped me out and we’re hoping this year will be just as successful as previous outings.

This year’s Trek will take place on Sunday August 4 and will start at the Lumpers Pub in Ravensdale. The 10km will begin at 11am and transport for this walk is available with a free bus leaving the Lisdoo at 10:30pm. There is also a

People of all creeds and cultures came together over the weekend to take part in a special multicultural day in Muirhevnamor. The event was put together by participants of the Muirhevnamor Local Training Initiative and saw people from over twenty countries gather for a day of fun food and festivities.Foods from various different countries were brought in, cooked and shared during the event which was very well attended. There were also bouncy castles, dj’s and facepainting for the kids for what was a great family event. The Training initiative is run by the Muirhevnamor Peace Programme and is designed to help young people become leaders in their communities. As part of their course the students were asked to come up with a practical idea for an inclusive event in their community and the multicultural day was what was chosen.

The project supported by the European Union’s PEACE IV Programme, managed by the Special EU Programmes Body (SEUPB).

5km walk which begins at Noon and again a free bus will leave the Lisdoo at 11:30am for those taking part in the shorter distance.

Registration for the event costs just €20 and there will be some light refreshments and music after the walk in the Lumpers for all who take part.

There will also be a barbecue (weather permitting) outside the Lumpers Pub. Later that evening there will be a second fundraising event on in the Lisdoo with music by Vertigo, finger food and a disco afterwards. That event starts at 9pm and all are Irene McBride from Jenkinstown winner of €5000 in the Dundalk invited to attend. There is a Credit Union Cash draw receiving her cheque from Cina Agnew of Dundalk Credit Union. €10 admission fee.

Dundalk ready for stern Champions League test

Dundalk continue their Champions League journey this evening at a sold-out Oriel Park against Azerbaijan champions Qarabag FK. Dundalk set up the tie with Qarabag by beating Latvian champions Riga FC last Wednesday evening in a dramatic penalty shootout in the Skonto stadium after two scoreless legs and extra-time failed to separate the sides.

That victory guaranteed the Lilywhites a €1.2m payday although chartered flights to Latvia and Azerbaijan will put a dent into those profits. Dundalk’s opponents this evening are European group stage regulars having qualified for Europa League in 203/14, 2014/15, 2016/17 and 2018/19.

They also qualified for the group stages of the Champions League in 2017/18 where they finished bottom in a group containing European

Should they lose their second-round tie against Qarabag the Carrick Road side will be parachuted into the Europa League third round qualifiers where they will face Slovan Bratislava (Slovakia) or Feronikeli

(Kosovo). Vinny Perth’s men would face an away trip for the first leg on Thursday 8 August, with the return at home scheduled for the Thursday 15 August.

Qualifying for the Champions League group stages is the ultimate aim for both supporters and investors in Dundalk FC but that is a long way off just yet with three more rounds to negotiate for Dundalk before that dream becomes reality.

Stay vigilant of tick bites during Summer months Fianna Fáil TD for Louth, Declan Breathnach has urged people to take steps to avoid tick bites this Summer as he has heard increasing reports of people being bitten, which if untreated can lead to Lyme Disease among others.

“Ticks are in abundance and seeking a host during the

spring and summer months.

They attach firmly when they land and can go unnoticed for days. People need to be wary when they work or spend time near wooded areas, bushes and long grass. Tick bites can happen in your back garden,” Breathnach explained.

“I’d ask Parents to be vigi-

lant of their kids while playing outdoors in the sunny weather and parents should check their children for tick bites. If a rash or any unexpected illness comes from a tick bite, Lyme disease may be present, and the person affected should visit their GP,” he added.

Great performances at Louth Championships

There were some excellent performances at the recent Louth Senior, U20 and Masters’ Track and Field Championships, which, as has been usual in recent years, were staged at the Lourdes Stadium in Drogheda.

Fastest in the men’s 100m was Anthony Dillon (Dunleer), who clocked 11.58 to take the U20 title. Andrew Kelly (Drogheda & District) won the senior race with a time of 11.64. This made it a senior sprint double as his 23.20 clocking earlier had seen Kelly well clear of the opposition in the 200m.

There was a great battle between Tom Cummins (Drogheda & District) and Jamie Wynne (Dundalk St Gerard’s) in the U20 400m – Cummins just shaded it with a time of 55.06, three hundredths of a second ahead of Wynne.

Cormac Canning (Drogheda & District) impressed in the 800m, stopping the clock at 2:03.58 to win the U20 title.

Fastest in the men’s 1500m was another Drogheda & District U20 athlete – Tadhg Everitt Thompson whose winning time was 4:23.39.

Older athletes were to the fore in the 3000m, with Maurice McMahon (North East Runners) particularly impressive in winning the M45 title in a time of 9:22.22.

Donal Kearns (Cushinstown) leapt 6.25m in the Long Jump;

best of the Louth athletes was Edward McEntee (Dunleer) who took the U20 title with a jump of 5.74m.

Trevor McGlynn (Omagh Harriers) threw 9.59m in the Shot Putt, while Darren Weldon (Ardee & District) took the Louth senior title with a 7.87m putt.

Tom McGrane (St Peter’s) also impressed, recording 9.31m, albeit with the lighter 6kg shot, to win the M55 title.

Rory Gunning (Clonliffe Harriers) had a huge throw of 62.70m in the Javelin, while Darren Weldon made it a senior throws championship double with a 21.70m effort. His Ardee & District clubmate Mudger McCarron also did well, as he threw 22.17m with the lighter 700g javelin to win gold in the M50 age group.

Gráinne Clerkin (Clones) was fastest in the women’s 100m, clocking 13.22, while Mary Scanlon (Blackrock) took the Louth senior title with a time of 14.02. Another Clones athlete Gráinne McRory ran 27.15 in the 200m, with Mary Scanlon once again proving fastest of the Louth women as she clocked 29.24 to take the W40 title.

Yet another of the visiting contingent from Clones impressed in the women’s 400m, in which Áine Donnelly recorded 1:02.61. Ciara Reilly (Dunleer) sped around in 1:04.64 to take the Louth U20 title. Meadow

McCauley (Newry) was first across the line in the 800m, clocking 2:28.00, with Mary Leech (Drogheda & District) recording 2:29.69 to win Louth W40 gold.

Abi Tegart (Drogheda & District) enjoyed a fine victory in the U20 1500m, stopping the clock at 5:02.01. The women’s 3000m was possibly the best race of the night in terms of depth. Mary Leech was first home, taking the W40 title in a time of 10:24.35. She was followed by Karen Costello (Dunleer), who clocked 10:29.57 for silver in the W40 age group. Then came the W35 winner, Laura Mathews (North East Runners) in a time of 10:35.21, followed by Abbie Sheridan (Ardee & District), who registered 10:47.44 to take the U20 title.

Most impressive in the women’s field events were the Blackrock pair Aoibhín McMahon and Erika Juozapaitė. McMahon won a double in the U20 Shot Putt and Javelin with throws of 12.86m and 37.38m respectively, while Juozapaitė leapt 5.02m for victory the W35 Long Jump.

Geraldine Finegan was also in fine form in the Shot Putt, throwing 11.51m with the lighter 3kg shot to win the W50 title.

The opening event of the evening’s programme was a mixed Fit4Life Mile – first across the line was Michelle Lynch of Ardee & District.

Wee County Big Book Events

Critically acclaimed and award-winning crime novelist Liz Nugent will be in Louth this September for an in-conversation event on her book ‘Skin Deep’, which has been chosen to anchor the Wee County, Big Book Club 2019 series of events.

The programme, which will take place in venues across Louth in September and October, aims to get adults and children reading, thinking, and talking.

The crime genre plays a big

part in this year’s programme for adults, with Liz Nugent at the Droichead Arts Centre in Drogheda on Friday, September 6, and author Louise Phillips leading a creative writing course focused on crime, with sessions taking place throughout September and October.

As part of the Wee County, Big Book Club programme, readers across the county will be encouraged to read her current novel, ‘Skin Deep’ and then at-

tend the author-event to discuss it with her. Readers will also be able to share their views on their book club experience and the event at facilitated library sessions later in Dundalk Library on September 24 and Ardee Library on September 26.

Children are also encouraged to take part in the Wee County Big Book Club with a reading through illustration workshop at An Tain Arts Centre on Saturday September 14.

Erasmus School Week 2019 Teachers and students in Louth are being called on to participate in Erasmus+ Schools Week 2019, which will take place from Monday, September 30 to Friday October 4 across Ireland.

Erasmus+ Schools Week is coordinated by Léargas, the national agency for Erasmus+ in adult education, school education, vocational education and training, and youth.

Erasmus+ provides funding and support for organisations – including schools – to create projects that encourage European exchange, cooperation and learning. In 2018 alone, more than 4,200 students in over 100 primary and secondary schools across Ireland took part in Erasmus+ projects.

Are roads more slippery when it rains after a dry spell? It’s not something we come across as much in Ireland – if sunny weather is a distant cousin from America who visits every ten years, rain is our neighbour who drops in every ten minutes and doesn’t know when to leave.

Irish people know rain, and many of us have experienced slippery roads, but most of us don’t know why this happens after a dry spell. Well, you soon will! Prepare to dazzle your colleagues at the water cooler with these road facts.

HERE COMES THE SCIENCE PART… With normal Irish weather (ie. regular rainfall), materials such as bitumen, oil and rubber from

tyres are continuously washed away from the roads. But during dry weather, these remain on the road surface and build up into a residue. When the first rain falls after days of dry weather, there’s a lot more of this residue to mix with the rainwater, which can form a slick on the roads, sometimes resembling an oil spill.

This is why road surfaces become greasy and more slippery than usual.

This increases the risk of skidding and makes a vehicle’s braking distance longer.

HOW TO DRIVE ON WET OR SLIPPERY ROADS In wet weather, especially after a dry spell, slow down and keep further back from the vehicle in front of you. When surfaces are

slippery or greasy, avoid harsh braking or harsh acceleration – like when you’re driving in icy conditions, gentle manoeuvres are the key to safe driving. If you do find yourself in a skid, don’t slam the brakes, but gradually reduce acceleration, and turn your wheel in the direction of the skid.

Driving fast through surface water is dangerous as there’s a risk of aquaplaning – where your tyres lose contact with the road surface, reducing your steering control.

Remember too that heavy rain can affect visibility on the roads.

Keep your dipped headlights on so you can see other drivers, and so they can see you.
