Thieves strike during Month’s Mind Mass

LOCAL people are being urged not to keep large money in their houses following an incident in which thieves struck while family members attended a relative’s Month’s Mind.

The elderly homeowners returned to find their house had been ransacked and a substantial amount of cash stolen. The occupants of the house were left shaken by the incident.

The robbery occurred between the hours of 11:30am and 6pm on Sunday June 21 in Dundalk. Gardaí are currently investigating the incident and have urged anybody with any information to come forward and contact the authorities.

Dundalk face trip to Belarus

By Paul Byrne Dundalk manager Stephen Kenny says he is looking forward to the challenge of taking on Belarusian Champions Bate Borisov in next months Champions League second round qualifier.

The Airtricity League Champions were given probably the toughest draw hey could have faced with Borisov reaching the group stages of the Champions League three times in the last five years where they have shocked European giants such as Bayern Munich, Lille and Athletic Bilbao in recent seasons.

However, the Dundalk manager is relishing the challenge of taking on Bate and insists that his team are in confident mood ahead of the Champions League qualifier.

Louth TD Peter Fitzpatrick has announced that he will not be seeking the Fine Gael nomination to run at the next General Election.

The former Louth football manager confirmed the decision in a statement last week which didn’t rule out the possibility of standing for a second term in the Dail.

Mr Fitzpatrick, who was elected in 2011, stated that he has enjoyed his four and a half years and that he would make a further statement regarding his future in the coming weeks.

The statement is as follows: “I wish to confirm that I will not be seeking the Fine Gael nomination for the Louth / East Meath Constituency at the forthcoming selection convention.

“The last four and a half years have been both enjoyable and rewarding

working on behalf of my constituents and I am looking forward to continuing my work in Dáil Éireann over the coming months.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank all Fine Gael members who have helped me over the past four and a half years and in particular to thank the six branches who had nominated me as their candidate for the upcoming selection convention.

“Over the next number of weeks and with the help of my family, I will be reflecting on my future plans and will make a further statement at that stage.”

The move could pave the way for Dundalk-based councilors, Maria Doyle and John McGahon to seek the party nomination for the General Election.

voice their opposition to Louth County Council’s plan to close the N53 Dundalk-Castleblayney road for a three month period.

Peter Finnegan who runs a shop in Hackballscross chaired the meeting and once again urged Louth County Council officials to reconsider their plans to close the road for three months as this decision would without doubt put businesses and livelihoods at risk.

Over 200 attended the meeting in Nh Malachi clubrooms including local TDs Seamus Kirk, Peter Fitzpatrick and Gerry Adams along with councillors Declan Breathnach and Tomás Sharkey. According to Peter Finnegan there was a lot of anger and disquiet expressed during the meeting and he insists that the local businesses, residents and commuters will not

take this decision lying down.

“The meeting was called for a general information evening for anybody who is going to be affected by this road closure. There was a lot of anger and disquiet about Louth County Council’s decision to close the road for three months and we are determined that this shouldn’t be allowed to happen”, explained Peter.

“Businesses are going to be hit, side roads are going to have to cope with an extra 4,500 vehicles, commuters from Monaghan are going to have to add an extra half hour to their journey which potentially has a knock on effect on child-minding schedules etc. It’s going to disrupt farmers who are gearing up for their busiest season. It’s just a complete disaster.

“The contractor for

this work has been picked by Louth County Council and nominated to the National Roads Association. As soon as that is approved we plan to sit down with the contractors as well as Louth County Council.

“We welcome the new road and we are not for one minute vilifying the NRA or council for building this road.

However, the manner in which they are doing it will see the road completely closed for three months is simply not on. We are willing to be flexible and so should they”, concluded Peter.

The 1.1km stretch of road is due to be closed from August until November. Louth County Council say the inconvenience will be short term and the resulting road improvements will be long term gain for the residents and the ever increasing number of users of the road.

‘Here I Am’ photographic exhibition at The Square

By Paul Byrne A photographic exhibition which highlights the individuality of children with Down Syndrome was officially launched in Dundalk’s Market Square last Thursday morning.

The ‘Here I Am’ exhibition features 20 photographs taken by

Kerry photographer Dan Murphy which celebrate the unique personalities of children with Down Syndrome.

Local councillors Maeve Yore and Mark Dearey are both parents of children with Down Syndrome and they were instrumental in ensuring the exhibition made its

way to Dundalk.

Speaking at the launch Cllr Dearey spoke of the sense of pride and love we all have for our children and praised the work of Dan Murphy’s whom he said captured the children’s individuality and personality in a beautiful way.

A book of the photographs being shown at the exhibition is available to buy at the tourist office in Market Square at a cost of €25. All proceeds go directly to Down Syndrome Ireland.

Driving while under influence of drugs A man who pleaded guilty to driving while under the influence of drugs was banned from the road for four years at Dundalk District Court.

Padraic Smyth of 64 Ard na Mara, Wallaces Road, Blackrock, was also fined €250 as a result of the incident on November 26, 2014.

The court heard that

A blood sample taken at Dundalk Garda Station illustrated the presence of cannabinoids.

Solicitor, Stephen Reel, stated that his client, who had no previous convictions, was a 23-year-old unem-

ployed man whose partner is expecting their first child.

He was very co-operative with Gardai and understood was the consequences were.

In relation to the charge of no insurance, Judge Flann Brennan imposed a €100 fine and disqualified for two years, while related matters were struck out.

The youngest and oldest pupils in Castletown Girls School were chosen to cut the ribbon to mark the official opening of the brand new extension which was opened last Thursday.

Callie O’Brien from Junior Infants and Toni Ogunmuyiwa from 6th Class did the honours as the school opened up a brand new building to replace the prefabs which had been used previously.

The new extension was blessed by Fr Garret Campbell, chairperson of the Board of Management, Fr Mark O’Hagan administrator of the parish and Fr Magnus the school chaplain.

Three year road ban A MAN who pleaded guilty to a drink driving charge at Dundalk District Court was banned from driving for three years.

Niall McEvoy of Commons Road, Dromiskin, was stopped

by Gardai at Marshes Lower on October 24 and a breath sample taken at Dundalk Garda Station showed he was

over the limit.

Solicitor, Conor MacGuill, stated that the 24-year-old defendant had recently completed a course. He was hopeful of getting work but realised that as a result of the conviction there would be a restriction on what was available. Judge Flann Brennan also imposed a €350 fine.

Sophie is flying flag for town at Euros in Iceland

One of Dundalk’s brightest sporting talents, Sophie Watters, is flying the flag for local football as she is currently on duty with the Republic of Ireland U-17 squad at the European Championship in Iceland.

The 16-year-old from Woodbury Gardens flew out with the 18-strong squad on Friday as they compete with seven of Europe’s elite teams.

The Irish team, managed by former Dundalk player, Dave Connell, began their campaign against France on Monday when they lost out 1-0 thanks to a late goal.

However, they will be aiming to bounce back when they face Switzerland and Norway, as they bid to make the

semi-finals.

Proud father, Colin, revealed that Sophie was looking forward to competing and was optimistic about the team’s chances.

“Unfortunately she broke her wrist in a training game and missed the recent qualifiers in Cork. Despite that she remained part of the squad and was confident that she would make the panel for Iceland. When the announcement was made she was over the moon and is really looking forward to it.

“I think they have a good chance of coming out of the group as the team is unbeaten in qualifying, with France being the only unknown quantity”, explained Colin, who added that local fans will be able to see the games on Eurosport.

It has been a whirlwind year for the student who has just finished Fifth Year in the Marist, as she made her debut against Denmark last year, and helped Ireland get through the first qualifying stage in Serbia in October.

The team them made it through to the finals by coming through a difficult elite phase section in Cork, when they defeated England 2-0 and drew with Holland and Hungary.

Sophie began her football with Quay Celtic at U-6 level and played right through in the Schoolboys League up to U-14 level. The club then started what proved to be a very successful girls team before she moved to Trim Celtic and was subsequently snapped up by

Shelbourne.

She has enjoyed considerable success with the Dublin side, helping the senior team win the treble of league, cup and subsidiary cup, while also winning the league and cup with the U-18 side.

Local drivers steering clear of penalty points LOCAL drivers who have been able to avoid picking up penalty points due to a legal loophole are set for disappointment in the future after it emerged that measures are being introduced to ensure they can no longer avoid the punishment.

It was revealed this week that an amazing total of 88% of drivers convicted of penalty point offences in County Louth between January 2014 and March 2015 avoided getting points on their licence due to a legal loophole.

Motorists dodged receiving penalty points by simply not bringing their driving licences to court. Officially if a driver refuses to bring

his license to court it is deemed an offence which is punishable by fines of up to €2,000 or three months in prison but these drivers have not been pursued by gardaí up until now.

Figures released show that out of 758 convicted drivers in Louth only 91 had penalty points issued on to their licence while the remaining 88% walked out of the court without amassing any points at all.

That has prompted a clampdown from Minister Frances Fitzgerald, who is determined to crack down on anybody seeking to avoid getting penalty points. The first wave of reforms will see seven courts initially targeted before the meas-

ure is rolled out across the country.

The new Garda operation is expected to be set up in the near future to crack down on this practice and ensure motorists who receive penalty points have them issued on to their licences.

Nationally over 20,000 motorists failed to produce their driving licenses in court which equates to 72% of drivers have availed of this loophole to escape penalty points being registered on to their licence.

Recently released figures showed that Dundalk District Court issued 166 penalty point convictions in 2013 204 in 2014 and 76 between January and March this year.

Grading success for karate club When people think of Fathers Day, they think of spending time with family and friends, but Dundalk Karate started the day with a Grading Examination for Junior and Senior Members in the Redeemer Family Resource Centre.

Not only did they excel and pass with ease, but with numerous family and friends looking on, and with Head of Dundalk Karate, Sensei Mary Marcus and Sensei Stephen Hughes on the Examination Panel, there was no room for error.

During the grading, all members had to show their understanding of basic punches, blocks and kicks, and for those who were going for a more advanced grade, they had to show that they could put all their basic moves together in combinations and also show that they had not only learnt a new Kata, but that they could remember Katas they had already learnt since they started training.

First up was Junior

Head of Dundalk Karate, Sensei Mary Marcus and Sensei Stephen Hughes with members of Dundalk Karate who recently passing their grading in the Redeemer Family Resource Centre.

Members Ronan Igoe, Christos Kostopoulos, Tom Phillips, Eden Leavy Cassidy and Conor Hamilton who all excelled in their 10th Kyu Grading.

This was then followed by fellow Dundalk Karate Junior Members, Liam Hoey, Katie McNamara and Franciszek Chmielecki who showed that not only are they champions on the Tatami Matts at National and International Competitions, but that they can fly through grading with praise from the grading panel.

Last but not least from the Junior Members was Ryan Cumiskey, and to say that Ryan has advanced over the past few months is an understatement.

Senior Members were next in the spotlight, and first up was Maria Hoey, Carol Phillips and Danai Tsigkari who only took up karate recently. Not only did they pass their tenth Kyu Grading with ease, but they were part of the Dundalk Karate Team who travelled to Birmingham recently and competed against seasoned International

Competitors and were victorious in every event and came home with medals galore.

Finally, Senior Member Denise Moran flew through her 7th Kyu Grading Examination with ease.

Sensei Mary Marcus, Head of Dundalk Karate said, “I was thrilled with everyone’s performance on the day.

Crashed car after row with girlfriend A man who was having a verbal dispute with his girlfriend crashed the car he was driving resulting in him being knocked unconscious briefly.

As a result, Seamus Drumm, with addresses at Glenwood, Dublin Road, Dundalk, and Rockfield Manor, Hoey’s Lane, was banned from driving for three years after pleading guilty to a drink driving charge at Dundalk District Court.

The defendant also admitted to charges of having no insurance and leaving the scene after crashing into a wall at the Red Barns Road on March 13 last year.

Judge Flann Brennan stated that in view of his record he imposed a sentence of six months which he

suspended for six months.

The court heard that on January 17 last year, that after a dispute with his girlfriend of the time, Mr Drumm pushed past her and took the car.

She got into the car and a verbal altercation ensued, before the crashed the car which landed on it roof. A sample taken in hospital revealed that he was over the limit, while he failed to produce documents.

Pilgrimage step into Ireland’s ancient past The Brigid’s Way Celtic walking pilgrimage will commence on Saturday June 27 and continue over nine days from St Brigid’s Well in Faughart, to St Brigid’s monastic city of Kildare.

Now in its third year, this pilgrimage connects two places sacred to the ancient Celtic goddess and Celtic Christian Saint, Brigid, who in all her forms stands at the heart of the spiritual culture of Ireland.

The pilgrimage will wind its way through many places of spiritual

and archaeological significance such as Newgrange, Hill of Tara and Slane. Along the route, pilgrims will experience some of Ireland’s most inspiring, peaceful and beautiful landscapes.

This year, there will be a chance to sleep under the stars in Donadea Forest, Co. Kildare.

The walk will cover 10 to 12 miles each day at a leisurely pace.

People from all walks of life, all spiritual traditions and age groups are welcome to join.

Pilgrims can take part in all nine days or join

for as many days as they wish.

You are invited to join in this initial phase of the pilgrimage which begins at 2pm at Faughart Shrine with its magnificent trees and the flowing St Brigid’s stream. The Brigid of Faughart festival team will introduce the treasures of Faughart and lead people around the wonderful healing stones located in this site.

Music Generation perform in Dublin Castle

Thirty young musicians from the Music Generation Louth String Orchestra programme were invited as the only musical ensemble to perform at the official national launch of the Arts in Education Portal in Dublin Castle recently.

This prestigious event was attended by Minister for Education and Skills Jan O Sullivan who, along with Prof. John Coolihan, Chairperson of the Arts in Education Charter Implementation Group, highly praised the performance of the young musicians.

The Music Generation Louth String Or-

won first place at the Newry Feis Ceoil as well as performing for President Michael D. Higgins at the Music Generation Gala concert last October.

Music Generation Louth is a music education service for children and young people that provides a range of opportunities throughout the county for children and young people aged 0 -18 years to learn music.

Cyclist Colm claims Leinster bronze On Friday night Leinster’s top cyclists descended on Dundalk for the L:einster Time Trial Championships where local rider, Colm Quinn captured the bronze medal. The course was the 16km route starting at Felda Gym, going out to Castlebellingham and back in again.

meant that fast times were expected on the night and Colm Cassidy of Cork’s Aqua Blue did not disappoint setting a new course record of 19mins 36secs for the distance.

However as Cassidy rides for a Cork club he was not eligible for the Championship, which meant that Summerhill man Mark Reilly took the gold

with a time of 21mins 20sec.

Niall Clarke took silver with a time of 21mins 20sec. Taking the bronze medal was another Cuchulainn man Colm Quinn with a 21:28.

Ciara Kinch was the ladies champion, ahead of Cuchulainn’s Celine McPhilips and Hannah Ormesher in third.

Linda was part of a strong group which took maximum advantage of their handicap to stay away. Jamie O`Hare was in second, Cyril Sherry in third, Kathleen Byrne was fourth and Jason Boyle rounded out the top five.

In race 1 the first group off also worked well together to stay away for the win. Sean McEvoy won the sprint ahead of Alex McDonnell and Eamonn McKeown.

Duck race back on July 12 The hugely popular duck race to raise funds for SOSAD is back on the Castletown River next month.

The event takes place on Sunday July 12 and following the success of last year when 5,000 rubber ducks were released, this time 15,000 will compete for the top prize.

According to one of the organisers, Gerry Duffy, it promises to be a great family day out with lots of activities as they aim to raise money for the organisation.

The ducks are released on the Castletown River last year

of €500, €300 and €200 for owners of first, second and third. The race starts from the big bridge at 4pm and will

travel 500 yards, lasting about 20 minutes in total. Ducks are €2 and can be bought at various locations around town,

Man stole bicycle from shed A man who pleaded guilty to two burglaries was sentenced to five months in prison.

David Cooney of 3 Moorland Row, Armagh Road, Dundalk, pleaded guilty to the offences when he appeared at Dundalk District Court.

The court heard that on December 12 last year, Gardai attended to a report of a burglary at St Alphonsus Road where a bicycle valued at €400 had

been stolen from a shed. The defendant was later arrested and admitted taking the bike.

On May 6 this year, Mr Cooney entered a house at Bothar an Feirme, Rock Road, taking an item worth €50 and some change. The owner of the house was disturbed when he heard his car being taken.

The defendant and another man were seen in the car when stopped by the owner who was

able to identify them to Gardai.

Mr Cooney admitted being in the car and taking the items.

In pleading guilty to charges of unauthorised carriage and burglary, barrister Irene Sands stated her 19-year-old client had 26 previous convictions, mainly for offences committed while under 18. He has served time in custody on a number of occasions.

She stated that in the first

instance he had entered a shed and didn’t encounter anyone, while on the second incident he didn’t disturb anyone in the house until he had left.

Ms Sands pointed out that the defendant, who had a difficulty with tablets, wanted to address that issue as he recognises it as the root cause of his offending. He had been on remand for five weeks prior to his appearance in court.

Man set up a grow-house in his own home

National Hunger Strike Commemoration launch

A man who admitted setting up a cultivating unit to grow cannabis in his home was fined a total of €300 at Dundalk District Court.

Gardai searched the home of Lukus Prus at 103 Manydown Close, Dundalk, on May 4 last year where they discovered a small grow house.

Four cannabis plants were found in one room and another in the attic, with a value of €800 each.

The defendant admitted building and setting up the cultivation unit and growing the cannabis. Mr

Prus, also pleaded guilty to a possession charge on July 7, 2014. On that date Gardai stopped and searched a vehicle where they found tin foil containing cannabis herb.

The defendant admitted that it was for his own use.

Barrister, Irene Sands, stated that her 34-yearold client is originally from Poland but has been living here for ten years.

Judge Flann Brennan imposed a €100 fine in relation to the possession charge.

Sinn Féin President and Louth TD Gerry Adams published details at a press conference of the National Hunger Strike Commemoration which is due to take place in Dundalk on August 23.

Mr Adams and Louth County Councillor Edel Corrigan addressed an invited audience of around 60 people in the Old Dundalk Gaol. As well as local Councillors Pearse McGeough, Jennifer Green, Tomás Sharkey, and MEP Matt Carthy, former Hunger Striker Laurence McKeown attended as did Paddy Agnew who topped the poll in Louth in 1981 in the general election.

Dundalk Tennis Players compete at Europe Tournament in Portugal

Dundalk Tennis Club are having a busy time with players taking part in international and local tournaments while they remain busy working on the schools programme.

Dundalk Tennis was represented by sisters Zofia and Anna Mai Mullen who competed in their first Tennis Europe event this week in Portugal. Zofia battled well in her first round

defeat, while Anna Mai got through one round against a local opponent before losing narrowly in the next.

Meanwhile coach, Deirdre Winters, is doing fantastic work on the schools tennis programme around Louth this year. This has given young children the opportunity to play tennis as part of their PE programme at Dundalk Tennis & Badminton Club.

Mountain trek aims to raise funds for Fighting Blindness

Eric Beggs from Dundalk, along with the help of his local community, has once again organised the Cooley Mountain Trek in aid of Irish patient-led charity Fighting Blindness.

This is the third year of the event which has grown in popularity since it began in 2013. It is just one of the many activities that Eric has organised over the years to support research in Ireland to find treatments and cures for blindness.

Failed to have Local student displays impressive careers skills drink drive charge dismissed

A man who was over the limit for driving attempted to have the charges against him dismissed as he argued that the arresting Garda had no reason to be suspicious about the manner of his driving.

However, Gerard Rogan of 5 Crescent 1, Muirhevnamor, Dundalk, failed in his attempt and as a result of the subsequent conviction, was disqualified from driving for a year.

The court heard that at 2am on October 24, 2011, Gerard Rogan was observed driving on Dublin St. Having stopped the vehicle, the Garda noticed a strong smell of alcohol and after the driver failed a roadside test he was arrested and taken to the station.

A breath sample taken showed he

was over the limit. In response to questions from solicitor, Conor MacGuill, the investigating Garda stated that although there was nothing in evidence to indicate concern over the manner of driving, it was routine to stop cars to check tax and insurance. This could even be the case at 2am.

He stated that when he was checking for documents that he noticed the smell of alcohol.

Mr MacGuill asked for the case to be dismissed given that basis of suspicion was not reasonable. However, Judge Flann Brennan was not satisfied by the argument.

As a result, he imposed a €300 fine and banned the defendant from driving for 12 months.

The runners left Aiken Barracks and on reaching the mast on Claremont Cairn they met a group of children and teachers from Mullaghbuoy N/S where the children released balloons to mark the event.

Beach is packed for Raft Race

Heat 1 of The Raft Race: winners, Blackrock Park.

Despite a patchy day weather wise which included a couple of showers the Blackrock Raft Race enjoyed their biggest crowds in years as the people came in droves to enjoy the hugely successful event.

Now in its 20th year the raft race enjoyed one of its most successful outings yet with onlookers struggling to remember the last time they seen the beach so packed. Larry Magnier who helped organise the event was delighted with the turnout for what was a fantastic day’s entertainment.

“We were absolutely thrilled

with this year’s raft race and we are delighted to say that there have never been as many entrants as we had this year. The whole place was packed and there was a great buzz around the village”, noted Larry.

“We had a total of 28 rafts this year with the Seatown Dundalk Men’s Sheds recapturing their crown which they last won in 2013. The Dundalk crew fended off HaggleRock Theatre Group to take home the prize and a well deserved victory.

“We had all sorts of activities going on as well as the raft race and I’d like to congratulate the winners of our Family Treasure Hunt, Sandcastle Competitions

and Schools Talent Competition. I’d like to congratulate all of our winners and everybody who took part to make it a brilliant day in Blackrock”, added Larry.

Larry thanked everybody who came along on the day and supported the event as well as all the sponsors, Louth Leader Partnership and Louth County Council.

He also thanked the Irish Coast Guard for the helicopter display and the Civil Defence.

The Blackrock Raft Race is run each year to raise funds for the Blackrock Tidy Towns committee and this year’s event was a huge success for the committee.

A local family are encouraging people to show their support for Motor Neuron Disease in the run up to MND/ALS Global Awareness Day. Peter and Patricia Stewart from Muirhevnamor lost their 21 year old daughter Siobhan to the disease in July 2011 and are strongly encouraging people to donate.

The family will be attending a Drink Tea for MND event hosted in Byrne’s pub next weekend to show their support for MND/ ALS Global Awareness day which takes place on June 21.

Friends and family will gather in the pub to drink tea and coffee whilst raising money for the disease.

The Irish Motor Neuron Disease Association have been encouraging people across the country to raise funds and awareness by holding a tea day or cake sale in local pubs, clubs or simply at work with colleagues.

The Drink Tea for MND event will be held in Byrne’s pub on Hill Street on Friday 26th of June where people will come together to drink tea and coffee. There will also be cakes and

buns available on the day.

People are encouraged to make a donation by texting MND to 50300 and donating €2. The IMNDA provides specialised services for those affected by the disease. The IMNDA depends largely on the generosity of the public who generate over 86% of its income.

For anyone interested in hosting an event, tea packs are available from the IMNDA office.

Ardee Concert Band awards night

On Thursday June 19 in the Bohemian Centre 90 members of the Ardee Concert Band received an award for their hard work and dedication throughout the year and to mark the next part of their progression in the 160-strong organisation.

The Ardee Concert Band recorder group got the night off to a musical start under the baton of Darren Kirk and Sarah Clare, both members being Leaving Cert students who finished their exams only a couple of hours earlier. The 20 members left the platform

receiving a certificate to mark their success in Assessments and participation in the Recorder Group.

Kevin Reilly then took his Junior Band to the stage to showcase their musical achievements of the last nine months performing the Star Wars Theme Tune and Armada.

After a rapturous applause each student went back to their proud families with their certificate to mark their success in their recent Assessment and progression in the Junior band so far and some members of this band received their RIAM

Grade Certs.

Last but not least the Ardee Concert Youth Band alongside John Gaynor took to the stage and performed their recent Competition pieces that they performed in Cork school of Music last April. Each member in this band recently sat their Grade exams under the Royal Irish Academy of Music in the band rooms last May. They were presented with their Certificate of Achievement for the exam along with a medal to mark their participation in the National Competitions in Cork.

“When I was Bohs manager in 2003 we drew them in the Champions League qualifiers that year as well and they were the seeded team then also. We managed to beat them 3-1 on aggregate when we weren’t really given a chance. Obviously they have got even stronger since then and are now regularly in the group stages of the Champions League.

“Their squad contains 14 Belarusian internationals and I think they’ve won their national league nine years in a row. But in saying all that we have been

in fantastic form ourselves with just one defeat all season and confidence is high in the group.

I think we have got some really special players who can cause them problems and create chances. We are a good team and we aim to show that next month when we take on BATE”, promised Stephen.

As well as being a tough draw on the pitch Dundalk fans were also disappointed with the logistics of travelling 3000km to Belarus to support the league champions. Fans were hoping for an easier trek across Europe to face one of the Scandinavian sides or even a trip to Scotland to take on Celtic.

“It’s probably the toughest draw we could have got and from a logistical point of view it is definitely the worst draw we could have got. There are no direct flights to Minsk from Dublin and there are issues with regards to securing visas for everybody that travels which is a costly exercise. Thieves strike during Month’s Mind Mass

“I suppose part of the value of the service we provide here is that we are able to reach out to the elderly community and remind them of the dangers of keeping large amounts of money in their houses. We would warn them of the dangers of doing so and tell them they are at risk of being burgled if they have large amounts of cash in the house”, explained Anne.

A Garda spokesman echoed those words noting that thieves often target homes of elderly people because they are aware that many of them tend to keep money in their houses rather than using bank accounts.

Driving ban for man who was over the limit when he crashed

A man who was over the limit from driving when he was involved in a traffic accident, was disqualified for three years after pleading guilty to the offence at

Dundalk District Court.

Patrick Cooley of 7 Malthouse Gardens, Castlebellingham, was also fined €300 following the incident on May 26

last year.

Insp Martin Beggy stated that on that date Gardai were called to a traffic accident at Mooretown, Dromiskin. A breath sam-

ple taken showed that he was over the limit for driving.

Solicitor, Conor MacGuill, stated that he had taken out an insurance policy but an issue

had arisen in relation to the direct debit payment. He stated that his client will look after compensation if the insurance company doesn’t.

In relation to the no insurance charge, Judge Brennan imposed a €100 fine and two-year disqualification. Related matters were struck out.

Damaged cars on birthday

A man who damaged ten cars the day after his 18th birthday was convicted on seven counts of criminal damage at Dundalk District Court.

Fintan Donnelly of 33 Grange Drive, Muirhevnamor, Dundalk, had been given the chance to raise the compensation of €1,770.80 when the case was initially heard but was unable to do so.

Solicitor, Frank McDonnell, stated that his client was on Social Welfare of €100 per week which he hands up for his keep. Due to a family illness there were demands on the money.

The incident, which Mr McDonnell described as a ‘drunken escapade’ occurred on July 4, 2013, at Willowdale Park, Bay Estate.

Judge Flann Brennan imposed a fine of €50 for each conviction and ordered compensation to be paid.
