The streets around the town centre are looking more familiar these days as businesses around Dundalk begin to open their doors again.

Footfall around the town has noticeably increased over the past two weeks since the second phase of the governments plan to get the economy moving again post COVID got under way.

With some pubs, restaurants and hotels scheduled to re-open this Monday when phase three kicks in there is a palpable sense of relief amongst Dundalk traders as life slowly but surely returns to some sort of normality.

According to BIDS manager Martin McElligott traders are delighted to be back up and running again and he feels that they should be optimistic about the future.

Dundalk FC return to European action in August

Dundalk FC may still be in the dark with regard to their return to domestic league action but they now know when they will be back in European action following an announcement from UEFA this last week.

The current league champions will begin their Champions League campaign this year on either August 18th or 19th. Due to COVID19 there has been a change in the format of the qualifying rounds with teams now playing just one leg with the first team drawn getting home advantage. Should Vinny Perth’s side win that

opening tie they will play their second qualifying round a week later on either 25th or 26th of August.

A win in the second qualifying round will see Dundalk enter the third qualifying round on September 15th/16th. A win there and Dundalk supporters can start to get excited as the fourteen time league champions would face a two legged play off on the 22nd/23rd and 29th/30th with the winners of the tie guaranteed a place in the Champions League group stages. If Dundalk can negotiate that notoriously difficult path they would become the first Irish team to qualify for the group

“We have no food licence so we are not planning on re-opening until July 20. It’s hard to know what the new normal is going to look like and we’re probably talking at least months until it gets back to where it was but we will be delighted to see our customers again after three long months,” stated Michelle.

“I know it is very important to keep the virus at bay but the two metre rule is simply not practical for pubs to be able to trade,” she added.

All our staff will be fully COVID certified via online training for our return and having put in a huge amount of work behind the scenes to ensure we adhere to all regulations we are really looking forward to welcoming people back to the hotel,” stated Siobhan.

DkIT committed to delivering high quality student experience

DkIT has announced a new start date for incoming first year students of September 28, in line with all Institutes of Technology nationwide, and existing DkIT students will commence on the 30th September 2020.

Part-time and postgraduate taught programmes will commence around similar timeframes and individual plans are being put in place for Postgraduate Research Students.

Staff within the institute (where feasible) will commence a phased return to campus over the summer months in line with the Government’s Roadmap for Reopen-

ing Society and Business and the Return to Work Safely Protocol.

The health and wellbeing of DkIT staff and students is of primary importance and the preparation for the delivery of the 2020/21 academic year will have that principle at the heart of all decision-making.

It is envisioned that while the campus will be open and fully operational from September, the volume of people on campus at any given

time will be substantially reduced to allow for social distancing and other public health directives.

In developing its plans for next year, DkIT has recognised the clear message from students in Ireland that they are committed to preserving the on-campus student experience and the institute is fully supportive of that. The quality of the student experience is of paramount importance and DkIT aims to protect that experience as

much as possible while delivering academic programmes in a way that is safe, inclusive, supportive, and effective.

The Institute will introduce a blended model of learning which will incorporate online teaching including lectures coupled with practical and tutorials that will take place predominantly on campus. Provisions are being made to ensure that all services and supports (including counselling, disability, pastoral

care, careers and employability etc.) remain accessible to students via a mixture of on-campus and remote delivery.

The institute is currently developing a newly adapted induction programme for all new students to support students during their transition to higher education. Plans are also underway to ensure that critical learning supports offered via the Library, Student Learning & Development Centre, Math

Learning Centre and the IT Learning Centre are available to students via online and face-to-face delivery to coincide with the September start.

CLLR Erin McGreehan has called for the next Government to announce at least one, but ideally two, more Bank Holidays before the end of the year, as soon as possible.

Cllr McGreehan feels that it would boost the tourist industry and boost local economies, as an increased number of bank holidays can generate economic activity and jobs”.

“It is also true that Ireland has a lesser number of public holidays than most of our European Union counterparts so possibly this could be more

than just a once off,” she stated.

“We must be innovative to think differently and by having an extra bank holiday you are giving people an opportunity to go away for the weekend, the boost of that to our local economy would be fantastic.

Parents welcome the decision Council staff to undertake disability awareness training on Dundalk Gaelcholaiste Local parents have welcomed the news that the Department of Education are to carry out a technical assessment in relation to the provision of a gaelcholaiste.

They said that this is a welcome step in the campaign for a new Gaelcholáiste for County Louth and are now waiting expectantly for a positive outcome.

Parents who want Irish medium secondary level education for their children, have continued lobbying local TDs, the Minister for Education and senior Dept. of Education officials since the loss of immersive Irish secondary level education in Dundalk last September.

This move from the Department comes following a formal proposal submitted by An Foras Pátrúnachta (AFP), a patron of Irish medium education schools. Detailed discussions have been held throughout the lockdown period on how gaelcholáiste can be established in Dundalk for the post primary education of children of Co. Louth and the northeast through Irish.

During late February and March AFP met with local parents to see what level of interest there is for a gaelcholáiste. Despite the initial coronavirus lockdown restrictions hampering the ability to arrange public meetings, over 130 children were registered as potential future pupils of a gaelcholáiste.

In their proposal, submitted in early April, AFP set out how they would open and operate a full immersion school in Dundalk where the full range of all curriculum subjects would be taught through Irish, initially operating as a satellite of their Gaelcholáiste in Balbriggan. This means that management and admin would be provided by the parent school and the timetable and curriculum would be planned so that some teachers would be shared to complement the permanent

teachers based in the satellite.

The objective is to grow the numbers attending the satellite so that it can operate as a standalone school as soon as possible, providing top class education through Irish to the children of Louth, under the patronage and management of An Foras Pátrúnachta.

The proposal identified the former Marist school buildings as a potential home for the new school.

The Dept. of education, as part of their analysis of the proposal, instructed an architect to carry out a technical assessment of the buildings; this assessment was completed in the first week of June.

A number of Parliamentary Questions had been submitted in the Dáil to the Minister by local TD’s from Sinn Féin, Fine Gael and Labour, to which the Dept of Education provided the following answer; I wish to advise the Deputy that my Department is in active discussion with An Foras Pátrúnachta in relation to a proposal for a Gaelcholáiste under the patronage of An Foras Pátrúnachta to also have a campus in County Louth. The parties are assessing options in Dundalk for the upcoming school year. All parties are conscious of the short timeframe to the start of the school year and I wish to advise the Deputy that every effort is being made to expedite this assessment. A response will issue to correspondence received in this regard.

It is understood that the Section within the Dept. responsible for new school planning, are preparing a report on the merits and feasibility of the AFP proposal. Parents are hopeful that this report, which has the potential to transform Irish medium education in Louth for years to come, will be completed very shortly as many of them are hoping that their children will be able to return to school in Dundalk in September.

CLLR Erin McGreehan has had a motion passed calling for Louth County Council to facilitate that all staff undertake ‘Disability Awareness Training’, with priority given to frontline staff initially.

It is also intended to facilitate Access Auditing Training for all planning and infrastructure technical staff.

The awareness training would provide clear and accurate information for employees of Louth County Council about working with and supporting people with disabilities.

“The right to equality

is an integral belief of mine and is one of the main reasons why I was ever interested in politics. Equality is derived from the state and inequality can often be ex-

acerbated by state, and it is for us public representatives to constantly work towards equality,” stated Cllr McGreehan.

“We as a society continuously fail under-

standing the needs of an individual with disabilities. If you educate yourself through formal or informal ways on the differences between you and others your acceptance of those differences grows. And therefore, you react and act to those differences in a mature and fair way.

“I am very happy to have this motion passed the training will improve all staff competencies in serving more members of our community, it will also make this a better workplace environment for those who may have a disability,” she concluded.

Fine Gael councillor Dolores Minogue has been elected as the new chair of Louth County Council. The Ardee councillor was elected as chairperson last Monday at the Louth County Council AGM and in doing so she becomes just the second female to take the position since the first elections were held in 1899.

Dolores follows in the footsteps of Jacqui McConville who held the role as chairperson for

Fianna Fail in 2002 and 2003.

The Ardee councillor was first elected to Louth County Council in 2009 and speaking on Thursday she admitted it was a huge honour to be elected as chairperson for the next twelve months.

“It is a great honour and a privilege for me to be elected as chairperson in Louth County Council and I look forward to the year ahead,” stated Dolores.

“I’m very proud that I have become just the second female since 1899 to assume this position and I think it’s a good thing

that women are being given voices at the table in politics.

When big decisions are being made women should be equal at the table and there should always be a fair balance. I think sometimes women might see things in a way men may not and vice versa.

“I’ve been proud to represent the people of County Louth as a councillor since 2009 and I think we have seen some excellent progress around the county with regards to various schemes and grants which have helped

improve our towns and villages.

Things like the Town and Village scheme have been a huge success and we have got funding for major projects like the Ardee Bypass which will be of huge benefit to the county.

“As chairperson I will continue to work very hard for everybody behind the scenes and I suppose the big push over the next few months will be to help people get back to work and back to some kind of normality following the COVID19 pandemic.,” concluded Dolores.

Arts Council congratulates six Louth artists on Covid-19 award The Arts Council has sent its congratulations to six Louth artists who have each been awarded a €3,000 grant to help them make new and original work during the Covid-19 crisis.

The government agency for funding and developing the arts said applications from County Louth artists had scored very highly.

Visual Artists Declan Kelly and Leanne Mullen, Musicians David Lennon, Stephen McArdle and Tadhg McDonald Leahy, as well as Martin Maguire, involved in film were successful.

The Arts Council said that across the whole of the country it was encouraged by both the quality of the applications, and the fact that almost two thirds of the successful artists had never before been funded by the Arts Council.

With all now notified of their award, artists will begin to create work across the full range of art forms, genres and areas of arts practice. In time, the public can expect to expe-

Tributes paid to the late Terry Brennan Tributes have been paid to well-known politician Terry Brennan who passed away on Saturday.

The Carlingford native served as a Fine Gael councillor in Louth from 1985 to 2011 and was elected to the Seanad in 2011 as part of the Labour Panel.

Terry, who worked in the ESB, was also well-known in GAA circles and was a member of the successful Cooley Kickhams team of the 1970s. One of his career highlights was captaining the team to the Senior Championship in 1973.

Leading the tributes to Terry was An Taoiseach, Leo Varadkar, who said he was deeply saddened to hear of his passing.

“When I first became a Minister, and Terry was our spokesperson for Tourism and Sport in the Seanad, we worked closely on many issues. I enjoyed sharing ideas and discussing policy and he was always good company and a great source of advice, especially over a pint in The Ginger Man. “Terry had a passionate interest in developing better North-South relations and he has left a strong

Revised Roadmap for Reopening Ireland COVID-19 is still having a major impact on Ireland. However, the expert advice is that progress on suppressing the virus, due to the huge effort of our citizens, means we can now bring forward our reopening roadmap.

As we continue to reopen the country, every step will be guided by scientific evidence and public health advice.

It’s really important to remember now, as things open up further, that personal responsibility and your own judgement are more important than ever.

We all have to continue to do everything possible to avoid the virus spreading.

By working together we have saved lives and limited the impact of the disease on society. Continuing to adhere to public health advice will determine whether we continue to move forward to the remaining phases.

Here are four things you should know:

Council welcomes completion of 80 social homes in Dunleer Louth County Council has welcomed the completion of 80 new homes to their new residents in Dunleer.

The homes were delivered under the Rebuilding Ireland: Action Plan for Housing and Homelessness, which sets out the Government’s aim to deliver homes, accelerate the provision of social housing, and address the needs of homeless people and families in emergency accommodation.

The Dunleer scheme comprises a mix of two, three and fourbedroomed A-Rated properties, which have

been allocated to families and individuals on the council’s social housing list. The scheme will be managed by Oaklee Housing, an approved housing body.

Chief Executive of Louth County Council, Joan Martin said: “Housing continues to be a key priority for Louth County Council and I am delighted with the addition of these new high-quality energy-efficient homes to the Council’s housing stock. I wish the new residents the very best of luck in their new homes and I hope they will provide great comfort and enjoy-

ment to them for many years to come.”

Staff run and walk to make an Intact for SOSAD Dundalk With the DkIT Dundalk 10K postponed until further notice, staff of Intact decided to put all their weeks of training into action—by racing virtually. And there was added meaning in those efforts as each kilometre run (or walked) raised money for SOSAD Dundalk.

Intact, a Dundalk-based global innovator of ERP technology and services, is a sponsor of the 2020 edition of the race.

As such, staff had been training for weeks to get 10K ready. But when the race was postponed due to COVID-19, staffers decided to complete their own virtual event.

Staffers were challenged to walk or run 5K/10K—solo or with their own family members—all while adhering to social distancing guidelines. Intact CEO Justin Lawless added the incentive that the company

would donate money for every kilometre run/walked, with the funds going toward SOSAD Dundalk. The result saw more than 60 members of staff from Intact’s Blackthorn Business Park office, as well as its UK locations, and partners in Australia, come out to support the charity initiative as they took to the streets and tackled their own route—with the added challenge of staying within a 2km radius.

In total, Intacters and their families covered a total of 651km, resulting in a total of €2,358 raised for SOSAD. “It was really heartening to see so many Intacters come together with their families to get moving and help a good cause during this difficult time for SOSAD, all while doing it safely, of course,” said Lawless.

SOSAD Dundalk promotes suicide prevention and aware-

ness and supports those who are bereaved. It has trained volunteers on call for emergencies 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, for anyone who may be in distress and in need of professional help and support.

Hattie Billingham, coordinator for SOSAD Dundalk, was delighted with the fundraising amount, especially as the organisation saw its fundraising plans obliterated due to COVID-19.

Despite having to close the doors of their Jocelyn Street office temporarily due to government guidelines, SOSAD Dundalk is still operating digitally—until they can return to the office.

“We have gone completely digital,” added Billingham.

“Our counsellors are talking to clients over the phone or using Zoom. We are doing everything we normally did - and more.”

The investment of €3.25m in the local institute’s free and subsidised higher education places has been welcomed by local TD Fergus O’Dowd.

“In total, 13,000 places will be made available in 2020, with the additional 4,000 places coming on stream over the remaining 2 years under the Springboard+ 2020 and Human Capital Initiative (HCI) Pillar 1 programmes,”

“As part of Springboard+ 2020, a total of 210 places are available across 13 courses at Dundalk Institute of Technology.

Places are available on courses in a wide range of skills areas, including artificial intelligence, smart factory technology, sustainable energy, medical device technology and cybersecurity.

“Approval has also been given for courses under HCI Pillar 1 to run for three academic years from 2020/21 to 2022/23. Here in the North East, a total of 402 places are available across 10 courses at DKIT,” added Mr O’Dowd.

FUEL PRICES CONTINUE TO DIP Fuel prices have continued to trend downwards over the past month, despite increases in nationwide traffic levels and a noticeable increase in crude oil prices.

According to the AA’s latest fuel price study, the cost of a litre of petrol has now fallen to the lowest level recorded by the organisation since March 2016.

On average, a litre of petrol now costs 121.8c – down almost 2c from last month’s average price of 123.7c. Meanwhile, diesel prices have also continued to fall, dropping by 1.6c on average to a current price of 113.9c.

Both fuels have dropped significantly in price compared to

the start of the year, when a litre of petrol cost 144.5c, with diesel costing 135.9c on average.

Following a short-term, significant drop in late April and early May, crude oil prices have continued to trend upwards – but still remain significantly below levels seen before the COVID-19 outbreak. Currently, Brent Crude Oil is trading at approximately $40 per barrel, up from a price of $35-$36 per barrel in late May. However, this price of crude oil remains significantly below prices of up to $65 per barrel seen in late 2019.

“With global demand for fuel and oil now starting to increase as many countries continue to

ease their COVID-19 restrictions, it comes as no surprise that crude oil prices are starting to increase. Despite this, prices at the pump remain low, but for how long remains unclear,” Faughnan added. “Demand is likely to remain below pre-COVID levels due to the large numbers of people working from home globally or choosing to walk or cycle more regularly, but for those who must drive it’s important to remain loyal to your own pocket and get into the habit of comparing prices at multiple garages and purchasing your fuel from whichever one is offering the best price.”
