The local community have rallied round to offer help and support to local couple Susan and George Mulligan whose house was destroyed in a fire on Valentines Day. The fire broke out in the attic of the couple’s home in Muirhevnamor shortly before midday and quickly spread causing the ceilings to collapse and destroying the house. Thankfully nobody was injured during the blaze.

Susan and George had only recently returned to Dundalk having moved to Kerry in recent years. The pair missed living in Dundalk and when their old house went back on the market last year they

jumped at the chance to return home. The couple put their life savings into the house and moved back last September with Susan returning to work on the frontline at St Oliver’s Nursing Home to help out during the coronavirus pandemic.

Both Susan and George subsequently got Covid and in dealing with that as well as underlying health issues throughout December and January they didn’t get a chance to take out a house insurance policy. That made it all the more devastating as the pair watched their home burn to the ground on Valentines Day as fire engines from Dundalk and Ardee tackled the blaze.

According to Regina the couple are devasted but overwhelmed at the support they have received

to date from friends, family and even people who they don’t know.

“Mammy and Daddy are obviously devastated but we as a family have been overwhelmed by all the support we have received so far,” stated Regina. “They were both in the house that Sunday morning when the fire started but neither of them were aware the house was on fire as they have both had issues with smell since getting Covid in December.

“Mammy was in the bathroom and Daddy was in his bedroom when the fire broke out about 11:15am and it was only when my brother Conor called into them on his way back from the shop and saw smoke and fire coming from the roof of the house that the alarm was raised. Thankfully everybody got out safe including their wee dog but the house has been destroyed. They were so excited to move back home in September having lived in Kerry for a few years and after putting loads of work

“It’s unbelievable as they were both in my house the night before the fire and we were talking about house insurance that evening but unfortunately it was too

late. There has just been so much going on in the last couple of months with both of them getting sick with Covid and everything and we just didn’t get round to doing it. Mam has also been working hard at St Oliver’s nursing home having returned early

because of the pandemic after taking a career break. They are staying with me at the moment and when I showed them the gofundme page that was started for them they were overwhelmed.

but we all know it’s the only way they can get their house back. We are so grateful for everybody who has helped and have donated to the fund. It shows what a great community we have here in Dundalk and it has given my parents a lift. Cllr Kevin Meenan in particular has been a huge help and has been ringing us everyday asking how we are and offering help.

Dad is retired from the army but Mam is bulling on and continuing to go to work to try and keep her mind off things. We don’t know what will happen next but we just wanted to say a huge thank you to everybody who has supported us,” stated Regina.

Sinn Fein councillor Kevin Meenan appealed for help as he asked people to rally round the couple as they try and rebuild their home.

Cormac meets Rob Down-Under Cooley man Cormac Watters couldn’t resist the urge to say hello to an old neighbour following a rugby match in Perth last weekend. The match in question between Western Force and ACT Brumbies was notable this side of the world as it marked the debut of Rob Kearney for his new club. Kearney recently joined Perth based Super 15 side Western Force and last Friday evening he made his debut in a 27-11 defeat.

One of the 10000 people in attendance was Cooley native Cormac Watters who has been living in Perth for the past nine years with wife Kate. According to Cormac he was able to have a wee chat with his old neighbour after the match when Kearney went over to chat to the fans.

“I have been living in Perth, West Australia for the last 9.5 years with my wife Kate. We both moved over here in 2012, originally to travel around the country for a couple of years but we ended up loving it and staying.

“Rob is a few years older than me, but I can remember growing up playing for Cooley Kickhams and watching him play with the Minor team back in the day. I played with his younger brother David through the years with Cooley and won a Minor Championship with him back in 2006.

“After the game the players stayed out and chatted with fans and Rob came to were I was seated and said hello to the fans. I only spoke to him briefly as there is still measures in place to ensure Social Distancing and other pre cautions are being implemented.

“Given everything that is cur-

rently happening globally with the COVID Pandemic, we are very fortune over here in West Australia to be able to attend these sporting events, so it was a great opportunity to show support to a fellow Irish and Cooley man doing well down under on his debut for The Western Force,” added Cormac.

There will be no parade or public events to mark St Patrick’s Day for a second year in a row, but a team of volunteers are producing a short video that will be released online on March 17 .

The Dundalk St Patrick’s Day committee, which was formed in 2018, has just announced that they are working on a ‘very special local production’ that will ‘allow people from Dundalk to share their pride in the beauty of their hometown’.

Specific details of the short video have not been revealed, but chairperson of the

voluntary Dundalk St Patrick’s Day Committee, Cllr. Conor Keelan, says he is really pleased that the volunteers have secured funding for the production.

Cllr. Keelan said: ‘When we met at the start of 2021, we knew it was very unlikely that there would be public gatherings or a parade or any of the things that we have come to anticipate for St Patrick’s Day. ‘We have, like a lot of other organisations, had to move online this year and we are putting together a short video that we hope makes people feel nostalgic about the

past and hopeful for the future.

‘We are very grateful to Louth County Council and to Dundalk Chamber of Commerce who have put funding behind this production at very short notice.

‘As always, they have been supportive of the community outlook of the committee and the efforts made to mark St Patrick’s Day, which is very different this year compared to 2019.

‘A lot of work has already been done on the script and the visuals. We are using local companies and people in the production and

we hope that when it is released, the public will be pleased with it’.

Confirmation McGreehan seeks status still information on the return uncertain to full capacity of special needs schools and classes

Speaking in the Seanad in relation to the return to full capacity of special needs schools and classes Senator Erin McGreehan commented, “Parents are seeing their children’s development regress. The ability of these children to behave socially has been affected and they are struggling to cope.

The stories I have heard are devastating.”

“We were all very glad to hear the announcement that special needs classes and schools would be reopening and I wholeheartedly commend the Minister of State’s incredibly hard work and dedication on this matter. However, the phased method, with one day on and one day off and two days in school one week and three the following week, is not sustainable for many students. It is causing havoc for some children.”

Senator McGreehan added, “A parent is facing the issue of her child being totally confused and upset by the starting and stopping. Another parent has found her son

Sen. Erin McGreehan. very upset on his days off and feels that online learning is making him worse.

“A child with special needs has been put on medication to help with anxiety levels and behaviour because of the lockdowns and not being able to go to school. Since returning to school this year, his medication had to be increased as returning to school one day a week was completely out of his routine.

“Another parent is dealing with a child who is very settled on the days he is in school but very disruptive on days off. I have also heard

from parents of children attending special needs classes in schools that are being asked to do a phased reopening.”

In response to Senator McGreehan, Minister of State, Josepha Madigan stated “The Department has reaffirmed its view that schools in and of themselves are low-risk environments.

We also know this from NPHET’s advice, from Dr. Abigail Collins and Dr. Kevin Kelleher and, indeed, from Dr. Philip Nolan, who has always maintained that schools are safe environments.”

“I am struck by what the Senator said about anxiety and behaviour, and the fact that some children have had to increase their medication, which is not what anybody wants. She spoke of families being at their wits’ end and being devastated. I am equally devastated that we cannot do this. If I had a magic wand I would have all children back in school from today or tomorrow but that is simply not possible. We are dealing with many constituent parts.”

A spokesperson for the Archdiocese of Armagh has said that the Sacrament confirmation will be celebrated after Easter, if it is safe to do so and if restrictions allow – ie between Easter and the summer.

“They will be organised, as last year, at parish level following consultation between the parish priests, parish pastoral councils and schools,” he said.

“At this moment all is uncertain as the country remains in lockdown with a strong Stay at Home message and presumably decisions with regard to the sacraments will depend on the public health advice situation after Easter.

The same will apply to First Holy Communion.”

It’s been a challenging year for students to say the least and as can be read below many have only now realised that they had taken so many things for granted before the pandemic arrived.

Below are testimonies from three local DkIT

students describing how they have coped and adjusted over the past year.

Taidgh Kavanagh: DkITSU President - 23 “Living in a pandemic setting is something like no other. It really puts into perspective how

lucky we were to meet a friend in a coffee shop, meet up as a group and go to a pub or simply just go for a cruise in a car with your pals and have the chats. I choose to work in a Students’ Union as I always have enjoyed social interac-

tions. This year, that has been completely taken away from me.

From walking through corridors with students bustling to get to their classes to being even lucky to see a face within said corridors. The college experience is

nothing like it once was unfortunately just like a lot of things. I believe the one thing COVID will teach all of us when it eventually subsides is to cherish all moments whether they be big or small. Never again will I take for granted what I once thought was the norm.”

Carl Morris: 3rd Year, Digital Humanities, 21 “I have found learning online difficult and I’m finding its getting more difficult as time passes by. I’m in a better position than a lot of people to adjust to

the change brought on by the pandemic, even at that it has brought about severe challenges.

I can’t begin to imagine the hardship that some have gone through during this pandemic from working without pay to not having exam results. For me not being able to see your friends, having to write a thesis without seeing professors, doing exams and assignments from my bedroom are all things that I’ve found hard.

The most difficult thing about it has been not being able to separate my

workspace from my relaxation space, this has contributed to a drop in motivation and general fatigue. In saying all of this I know how lucky I am to have all the resources that I do and that I’m not struggling to get online or keep up with my schedule.”

Leah Thornton: 4th year, Business, 21 COVID-19 has had a major impact on my life.

Your 20’s are always described as the “best years of your life” spent partying and traveling.

However so far I’ve spent mine baking end-

less amounts of brown bread, bingeing Netflix, making Tik-Toks and only seeing my friends over Zoom and the furthest I’ve travelled is my back garden. I’ve also been attending college online since September, that means spending up to 25 hours in front of my laptop in my room.

It’s extremely tiring, at the beginning it was great being able to roll out of bed just a few minutes before class but at this stage I wouldn’t even mind getting up at 7am for the bus. Although COVID-19 has had mainly a negative impact on everything, it has taught me a lot. Having a concert or a holiday cancelled seemed like a big deal at first and such a big issue but it’s really not. The pandemic has put into perspective what is actually important like being able to spend time with your family and friends. It has also taught me to appreciate the little things.

“I live on the Carrick Rd and regularly go for a walk on Mount Avenue, Ard Easmuinn through Ice House Hill Park and back up the Carrick Rd. “It is very noticeable the amount of dog poo that is not been cleaned up by their owners especially in last few weeks.

I’m sure this a problem for walkers in all parts of town and as this is one of the only ways that we can get some fresh air and some exercise in these covid times it is very annoying to spend your time walking looking at the footpath so as not to step in dog poo,” explained Peter.

“Could I please remind people to do their civil duty and that it is an offence not to clean up after their dogs. Clearly this is a town wide problem and a real health hazard. I would say a lot if it is down to new dog owners not knowing the rules but the problems it can cause to children and adults can’t be un-

derstated,” added Peter.

“There needs to be more signage on poles and dog bins available.

I have written to the council to urge them to take action on this,” he concluded.

A statement from Louth County Council urged dog owners to show respect to both their neighbourhood and their neighbours by cleaning up after their pets.

“Covid has no doubt increased the number of people exercising within their 5km and we encourage people to stay safe, stay active and mind their mental health. Louth County Council has experienced an increase in complaints both from members of the public and elected representatives about dog fouling.

Whether the incidences of fouling has increased or whether the numbers of people noticing fouling has increased, is difficult to determine, but either way what is indisputable is that allowing a dog to foul on the street and not clean it up is unacceptable to all. Dog excrement is not only unsanitary and unsightly but it also can pose a health risk to chil-

dren.

“We appeal to dog owners to clean up after their pets and show respect both for their neighbourhood and their neighbours.

“We are currently getting the litter wardens to review areas of high usage by walkers. If we catch dogs in the act of fouling, fines will issue to owners. From January 2020 to February 2021 a total of 7 dog Fouling fines (Section 22) issued resulting in fines paid by dog owners in the amount of €1050.00. While enforcement of S22 is difficult, it is hoped to increase the incidents of fines issuing through concerted efforts in coming months “To this end, we currently, and will continue to, conduct a programme of regular joint litter warden patrols focusing all of our wardens on specific areas of high littering and dog fouling for defined periods at least monthly.

“We will also continue efforts to raise awareness of this topic on our website, and using signage etc. We appeal to dog owners, don’t be foul,” concluded the statement.

Dog fouling on streets

An increase of people out walking their dogs on the streets since the pandemic began last March has unsurprisingly resulted in an increase of dog poo on our pavements.

According to Peter McMahon the issue needs to be looked at and he has urged dog owners to clean up after their pets while out walking.

Plenty of upcoming events to enjoy at Louth Library The Ireland Reads campaign is running throughout February, to get the whole country reading in the lead up to a national day of reading on Thursday, February 25th. Irish libraries have teamed up with publishers, booksellers, authors and others for the campaign, which is part of the government’s Keep Well initiative and aims to celebrate reading and all the benefits it can have for wellbeing and enjoyment.

The campaign is asking

everyone to ‘squeeze in a read’ on Ireland Reads Day, Thursday, February 25th. A new website www.irelandreads.ie has been set up where people can pledge to read on the day and see how much time has been pledged by the Irish public so far.

The website also offers book recommendations suited to a person’s interests and the time they have available. There are more than 800 recommendations from librarians all

around the country. A website user can simply enter their favourite type of book and how long they would like to read each day and the website will offer the perfect book suggestion and work out how long it will take to complete – a couch to 5k for books!

Dundalk’s newest second level school is planning for the re-opening of schools

Coláiste Chú Chulainn Principal Thomas Sharkey stated: “We are proud to have an Autism Unit. This facilitates students with Autism in their regular education. We call our unit An Tearmann (The Sanctuary.) An Tearmann is reopening next week with the return of 7 students and many staff.

“The students in An Tearmann will be following their normal timetable, logging on to online lessons and also doing smaller group work. They will be supported by their teachers, Special Needs Assistants and Mr Eddie Quigley Co-Ordinator. We are also looking forward to introducing our students to the school hens!

“We have been following all public health regulations since the Covid pandemic began and are confident of the

safety of all. Returning to school for students will be a positive experience. It will be a safe and calm experience that will help students remain connected with their school community, build self efficacy and know that there is hope for the future”.

Quay Celtic are putting their best foot forward as they take part in a 50 million step challenge which began last Wednesday and will run until the 3rd of April. The Lent fundraiser was organised by the Point Road based outfit to try and raise money for the Save our Homeless campaign in Dundalk.

Club members will do their best to walk 50 million steps over the 46 days with all walks and runs being tracked and posted on social media with teams going head to head for a prize upon competition of the task. According to club chairman Stephen Savage the initiative is designed to help those less fortunate around the town with the added bonus of keeping club members healthy and active.

“We have about twenty teams in total between the underage guys and seniors and between all of them and some of the parents we as a club will try to raise funds for the Save our Homeless charity by taking 50 million steps throughout the duration of lent,” explained Stephen. “We know how much great work the people behind ‘Save our Homeless’ do

as we were involved with them before Christmas when we had a collection drive in Clancy Park for those less fortunate.

“During lent our teams for our under sixes right up to our senior squads will compete against each other to see who will take the most steps and be top of the league after the forty days. The winner will win a grand prize for their team. Throughout the forty days we’ll be posting challenges on our social media pages that may earn extra points for the teams. This is a great way for our club to stay healthy both physically and mentally in these tough times.

“It has been tough during the pandemic as we have no contact with our players so as well as us doing this for a very worthy cause it’s a great way to maintain contact and interact with everybody. And of course the challenge is good both mentally and physically for all who take part,” added Stephen.

Idea to extend pub opening hours described as ‘kneejerk’ THE proposal to extend pub opening hours has been described as a “kneejerk reaction” by Chairwoman of Louth Vintner’s Federation of Ireland Collette Nugent.

It is understood the Minister for Justice Helen McEntee is set to examine opening hours in a bid to revitalise the nightclub and pub sectors.

The proposal would also make it easier for cultural venues such as theatres, galleries and exhibition centres to get licences.

Mixed lockdown messages causing distress—O’Murchú

Mixed messages from the government about lockdown are further adding to people’s distress as the 2021 lockdown continues, Dundalk TD Ruairí Ó Murchú.

The Sinn Féin TD laid blame squarely at the door of the government parties as new figures show that the rate of Covid-19 continues to fall.

The 14-day incidence rate of Covid-19 in Louth is 286.3 per 100,000, while the State rate is 243. There have been 369 new cases in Louth in the 14 days prior to February 20 and Louth is now the sixth worst county in the State for the virus.

Deputy Ó Murchú said: ‘While the numbers continue to fall in Louth, thanks to the effort of everyone playing their part, the numbers overall are higher than we would like them to be.

‘This may be down to the increased transmissibility of the new variants of the virus.

‘But the government parties seem to be in competition with each other to be the first out with the news regarding the

lockdown.

‘People need to be informed properly and the data and information grounding the announcements need to be explained. Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil rushing out to be the first with the updates so their coalition partners aren’t is not doing public confidence any good.

‘They are saying different things at different times to different people and it ends up that no-one really knows for sure what the plans are or how long the lockdown is going to last.

‘This lockdown is extremely difficult for everyone. It will soon be a year since the first lockdown and that psychologically is very hard for people to take’.

But the Dundalk TD said he was ‘hopeful’ as the vaccination roll-out continues to ramp up, with a further 20,000 more doses to be given in the coming week, compared to the previous week. This would bring the total number scheduled vaccinations to 100,000 this week.

He said: ‘The news of the Johnson and Johnson vaccine is

very welcome and it will mean more supplies that will lead to more people will get vaccinated quicker and more easily.

‘I welcome the projections that the vaccines will be delivered at the rate of one million a month for April, May and June and we need to ensure that we have the capacity and infrastructure to deal with this.

‘There is updated information this week that some of those with underlying health conditions such as heart problems, cancer, diabetes and other illnesses, will be moved up the sequence for vaccination.

‘While we wait for that, all efforts should be made to bolster and improve the test, trace and isolate systems and to develop a far better cross border information sharing system.

‘It is only this coming week that the Dáil will deal with legislation regarding hotel quarantine, something that should have been done a long time ago.

‘If all this is done correctly, then there will be greater choices for government in relation to lifting restrictions’.

Keen walker Liam Kieran has urged Louth County Council to explore the possibility of linking the Navvy Bank at Soldiers Point to the embankment in Blackrock behind the rifle range via a boardwalk. According to Liam, building the boardwalk would give walkers an uninterrupted 6km walk with spectacular views of Dundalk Bay and would do wonders for the local tourist industry.

The idea has been mooted on a number of occasions at council meetings over the years with lack of funding scuppering the move in previous years. However, according to Liam the boardwalk could result in an influx of tourists to the area.

LOUTH Sinn Féin TD Ruairí Ó Murchú has said he will not be taking a pay rise that would have pushed his wages to more than €100,000 per year.

TDs are set for a pay rise within months that will push their wages to more than €100,000 a year.

The increase will be paid by July 1 and means their basic salary of €98,113 will jump to €100,191. The pay increase is also due to higher earners in the public service.

Senators’ pay will rise to €70,134 a year. In response to news of a pay rise for TDs,

THE Practice Manager of a Dundalk GP surgery has spoken about the roll-out of the Covid-19 vaccine for the Over-85s.

The Square Medical Practice Manager Críona O’Reilly told the Dundalk Leader “nobody will be left behind” in the rollout.

“Nationally the rollout has started for the

over-85s. We will be getting a delivery of vaccines next Monday and plan to start vaccinating on Tuesday,” she said.

“We will be getting the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine. We will have to administer all the doses in four days.

“After our first delivery we will get a delivery every fortnight.

Currently, we have over 200 over-85s patients at the practice

and 1,200-1,300 over70s patients.”

She added: “There’s a cohort that are housebound but nobody will be left behind. The HSE has said arrangements will be made in these circumstances.

“For now, we plan to spend the afternoons focusing on Covid-19 vaccinations. It will be a massive workload, but we are looking forward to it.”

Carers in Louth need to be included in Covid vaccine priority list The estimated 13,500 family carers in Louth need to be included in Covid vaccine priority lists, campaigners have insisted.

Liz Collins is the mum and primary carer of a teenager with a debilitating skin condition whose worst nightmare came true when she and her husband Gary both tested positive for the virus.

Now she is pleading for informal family carers to be included in priority lists for the Covid vaccine.

Becoming ill left Liz and Gary deeply concerned over who would care for their 17-year-old daughter Claudia, who has Recessive Dystrophic EB and requires daily care to enable her to live as manageable a life as possible.

She is peg-fed and requires routine changing of wound bandages which cover her body from the neck down.

EB, or Epidermolysis bullosa, causes the skin – both inside and out – to blister and wound at the slightest touch and the only treatment is painful bandaging to prevent infection.

Liz caught Covid during the first lockdown last year and was hospitalised with Covid pneumonia, while Gary also contracted it around the same time.

“It was my worst nightmare – I needed someone to care for my child,” said Liz, a parent ambassador and board member of Debra Ireland, the national charity which provides help and support for people with EB, and their families.

Claudia and Liz. nurses, who clean her wounds and change her bandages, helped us during that time and as a family. We would not have got through this without them.”

Nurses and PAs attend the family home in Terenure, Dublin, three times a week to deliver bandage care to Claudia, who is in frequent pain.

Liz spends a significant amount of time each day helping her daughter eat, dress and bathe.

“They knew that both myself and my husband had contracted Covid and they came every day, wearing their PPE and did over and beyond, like changing beds when I couldn’t do it, ordering bandages, collecting medications for me.

“While professional carers are currently receiving the vaccine,

informal family carers are not currently scheduled to get it any sooner than the general population, even though they play a vital role as primary caregivers to people who have very vulnerable immune systems.”

The clinical decision by the National Immunisation Advisory Committee (NIAC) is that family carers be covered in other groups receiving the vaccine, but to date, that precise group has not been identified.

Debra Ireland is calling for the government to outline what priority family carers will be given, and a date for when vaccination will begin.

“This presents huge anxieties for carers of those with EB and other life-limiting conditions in Ireland,” said Fiona Aherne, Advocacy and Policy Manager in DEBRA Ireland.

“They are often their family members’ primary care giver and at Debra Ireland we feel they should be on a priority list.

“Because of their close daily interaction with their child, if they fall ill it places an enormous burden on the family.

“We are joining with other organisations like Family Carers Ireland in calling for family carers to be included as a priority group for vaccinations.

“Obviously we fully support the prioritisation of paid carers, many of whom deliver care to those with EB, but we also want the larger majority of carers who are providing unpaid care within the home to be treated equally.”

Dundalk Branch of the Ulster Bank won’t close this year

THE Dundalk branch of Ulster Bank will not be closed this year on the back of the announcement of a phased withdrawal from the Republic of Ireland, according to an Ulster Bank spokesperson.

Ulster Bank has no intention of closing any Republic of Ireland branches this year and there will be no new compulsory redundancies this year.

Following the conclusion of NatWest Group Strategic Review, Ulster Bank announced on Friday, February 19 that it will commence a phased withdrawal managed in an orderly and considered manner, from the Republic of Ireland over the coming years.

The decision to withdraw from the market does not impact Ulster

Bank in Northern Ireland.

Announcing the phased withdrawal, Ulster Bank Chief Executive Officer, Jane Howard said: “The decision by NatWest to withdraw from this market is hugely disappointing and today will be a difficult and worrying time for our colleagues across the Bank.

“It may also lead to customer questions and concerns as to how this

decision may impact them and their day-today banking needs.

“I want to be clear that there will be no change for customers today, changes will happen over the coming years.”

Ms Howard added: “Ulster Bank will continue to offer a full banking service in our branches, online and through normal channels for existing and new customers for the

foreseeable future.

“Customers do not need to take any action as a consequence of this announcement. We will communicate with customers over the coming weeks and months.

“We will now consult with employee representative bodies to determine how best to plan and manage an orderly withdrawal of the Bank over the coming years.

There will be no new compulsory departures from the Bank this year.

I am acutely conscious of our responsibilities to our colleagues and I am wholeheartedly committed to managing this process in a fair and responsible manner.”

Ms Howard concluded: “The phased withdrawal will include the careful and responsible execution of a strategy over time to deliver constructive solutions for our customers”.
