In an effort to deter anti-social behaviour during DkIT’s Rag Week a private security firm will once again be hired by the management company of two housing estates close to the college.

Following the success of last year’s initiative, four security guards are expected to patrol College Manor and College Heights next week between 7pm and 7am Monday to Thursday with the aim of preventing students from damaging any property around the area.

“I suppose the inspiration from the book has come from personal heartache myself and my family have had to go through over the last 20 years or so. Our daughter Colleen had prayed for a sister or brother since she could talk. When she was 10 in 1994 her prayers were answered when I got pregnant and there was great excitement in the house. I decided to take Colleen with me for my first scan but unfortunately it didn’t turn out the way I had imagined.

The baby had died. I always felt our baby was a girl and we named her Laura”, explained Julie.

“Lets celebrate the life’s of our lost children and be grateful for the time we had with them.

I dedicate this book to all the children who were Born to Be Angels,” she added.

On Christmas Eve, Kate’s second birthday she started her Chemotherapy for Leukaemia. Sadly Kate died on March 5, 1997.

As Laura and Kate would have been the same age I always imagined them together in heaven.

“And then finally in 2009 my husband Derek’s nephew Danny

was diagnosed with a brain tumour and we couldn’t believe it could happen again. Just like with Kate it was so sudden and at Christmas time again. Once again we got to see the utter devastation and grief a family goes through when a child dies. Danny passed away on January 6, 2010, just nine weeks after first getting sick, Danny was eight.

With the cancelation of the Ned Flanagan Memorial the previous week it fell upon Cuchulainn Cycling Club to kick off the 2016 Leinster Cycling season, with the 74th year of the Trader’s Cup. A task to which Gerard Neary and his massive team of volunteers rose to with aplomb, and promoting three races, over 250 riders signed on at St. Joseph’s club rooms in Dromiskin.

The main event saw over 120 riders compete in the 80km handicapped affair.

First off was the large bunch of A3 riders, followed by the A2 and finally the A1s, six minutes after the first riders had departed.

A group of four cyclists, led by eventual winner, Castlebar’s David Brody, broke clear and rode through all the rider’s ahead.

Brody eventually came to the line in a group of three, where he beat team Asea’s Chris Reilly into second, with Newry Wheeler’s Colm Quinn in third.

In the A4 race, a field of 110 riders followed

the same course as the main event.

The race eventually came down to a mass sprint, where Cootehill’s Mark Conaty took the win in his first ever bike race. Second place went to Nico Hamen of Dublin’s St. Tiernans, with third going to Mark Barett of Lynx CC. The women’s race was run over a slightly shorter distance and Emily Brick of Orwell Wheelers was the champion ahead of Ellen Murphy and Jenifer Bates.

St Valentine’s rescue lands man in trouble

A man who went to rescue his girlfriend on St Valentine’s Day came to the attention of Gardai when he drove without insurance.

Solicitor, Sean T O’Reilly, stated that perhaps love had got the better of Aaron Carolan of 31 Glenmore Park, Muirhevnamor, on the night as he had gone to collect his girlfriend after she was the victim of an assault.

Mr O’Reilly asked that his client would be spared a disqualification as it would affect his future employment prospects.

He explained that as a result of a FAS course, Mr Carolan had been recommended to take up an apprenticeship with a company in Monaghan. Any impact on his driving would influence his ability to get on and stay on the course, and employment prospects thereafter.

The solicitor added that the defendant’s father was in court and took a dim view of the situation which arose when Gardai were called to Iron Road, Dundalk in the early hours of February 15..

Judge Flann Brennan told Mr Carolan not to be so foolish again as he found the facts proved and dismissed the charge of no insurance. He warned that if convicted of driving without insurance he would face a two-year disqualification.

Judge Brennan imposed a €100 fine for having no licence.

A Dromiskin man was warned to avoid drugs like the plague as he was contributing to the world of organised crime that led people to kill each other.

Dean Matthews of 32 Church View, Dromiskin, was given the stern warning by Judge Flann Brennan when he appeared at Dundalk District Court to plead guilty to a charge of unlawful possession of drugs.

Insp Yvonne Murphy stated that on April 27 last year Gardai were on patrol around Midnight at Ballymascanlon when they observed two males who were

running towards the roundabout.

When they stopped Mr Matthews there was a strong smell of cannabis and he had a joint.

Solicitor, Ciaran Hughes, stated that his client was 18 at the time and was experimenting with the drug. He had never used cannabis before or since. When he saw the Gardai he ran and that was why he was apprehended.

He added that the defendant was from a very respectable family, he was deeply embarrassed and had learned his lesson. Mr Hughes stated that the defendant was in employment, had no

previous convictions and wasA unlikely to come before the courts t again.

Judge Flann Brennan statedh that he would give the defend-o ant one chance as he found ther facts proven and dismissed the case, but warned Mr MatthewsP to avoid drugs and the people in-B f volved with them.

“Avoid drugs like the plagueg as that is what they are. They ruinD lives and it doesn’t take long to get as far as the people in Dublinv who are murdering each other. Itw is organised crime and you aref contributing to it”, he stated.

Man warned not to get involved in drugs

A man who admitted having a small quantity of cannabis was told that his actions meant that he was not far removed from the organised criminals who are currently getting national headlines.

Emmet Murphy of 77 Pearse Park was warned by Judge Flann Brennan not to do anything so foolish again when he pleaded guilty to a possession charge at Dundalk District Court.

The court heard that on November 7 last year the defendant was involved in a fight among friends. Gardai intervened and

discovered €30 worth of cannabis in his possession.

The defence solicitor stated that the 20-year-old defendant works as a carer and hopes to take up nursing which would require him to get Garda vetting.

He added that the drugs were purely for recreation and he has given them up, while learning a lesson.

Judge Brennan stated that he was fortunate if he didn’t have a problem with cannabis as so many do, adding that so many lives have been ruined by drugs.

“What is going on in the national press over the last few days is not far removed from what you were involved in. This is the thin end of the wedge but organised crime is about this scourge or plague. Think about that before you ever think of drugs again.

“If you want to hold responsible employment, you won’t get vetting with a drugs conviction. You are not a foolish man so don’t do anything so foolish again”, added the judge as he found the facts proven and dismissed the case.

Safer internet day at Castletown girls’ school

On Tuesday February 9, Castletown Girls School celebrated Safer Internet Day. Each class took part in various workshops and activities to promote a safer internet for all users. These workshops tackled how to use the internet, how to act safely while on the internet and who to trust on the internet.

Cyberbullying was discussed in the senior classes as we feel this is an important and cur-

rent issue and the children read the “Golden Rules” which include the “Granny Rule” don’t share a photo on the internet that you wouldn’t show your granny.

All classes participated in A Safer Internet Day competition, some coloured beautiful pictures, others designed posters with witty slogans and the senior classes safely emailed photos they had taken.

Call to carry out work at Woodland Park

Louth County Council were asked to seek funding from central government to carry out works on a portion of Woodland Park in Dundalk to bring the site up to basic health and safety standards.

Sinn Fein councillor Kevin Meenan put forward the motion entitled ‘“Calling for LCC to seek funding from Central Government to carry out works on a portion of Woodlands Park in order to provide halting bays that meet health and safety standards” According to Kevin he has been told that their already has been work done to Woodland Park with domestic waste be-

ing cleared from the site as well as tackling a rat problem in the area.

“I’m quite happy that the council seem to be working with Travellers at last on this issue and from what I understand the next stage will be to find out where each Traveller wants to go next. Following a review of the county’s Traveller accommodation programme it was decided to re- interview between 160 and 170 Traveller applicants and find out what their preferred choice of dwelling will be.

“Some of them will put down halting site, some will opt for group housing and when the council have the numbers they will decide to what extent Wood-

land Park needs to be developed if at all. From what I am hearing the majority of residents would prefer to return to Woodland Park but we will wait until all the interviews are finished to see where we go next,” stated Kevin.

Residents who had moved onto the former halting site, were evicted last month after inspections identified issues in relation to fire safety and sanitary regulations. The eviction made national news and a stand-off ensued between Traveller representatives and Louth County officials.

However, following a review of the Traveller accommodation programme it is hoped that these latest talks will result in a solution that will suit both parties.

Marist students experience the German culture Students from St Mary’s were delighted to welcome the ‘German Connects’ team to the college recently. First and Third Year students of German took part in a series of workshops, which consisted of stimulating and activelearning games, quizzes and worksheets.

The college also had the privilege of hosting the Director of the Goethe-Institut Irland, Dr Thomas Lier, who came to see the workshops first-hand. The Goethe-Institut is the cultural institute of the Federal Republic of Germany with a global reach. The institute promotes knowledge of the German language abroad and fosters international cultural cooperation.

Example If you need €400 and it is 15 weeks to your shopping trip, divide 400 by 15 - €400/15= €26.66 – therefore, you need to save per week. Can you spare €26.66 from your weekly income? If not go back to the drawing board – cut the list again!

• Put the money you need to save away each week some place where you do not have easy access to it, i.e. a savings account in a post office, credit union or bank.

Local gym raises funds for SOSAD

Thirty-four members of Fighting Fit – a personal training and Bootcamp gym in Dundalk, set off to Kilruddery Estate in Bray Co. Wicklow on January 31 to take on Ireland’s toughest mental and physical endurance challenge; Hell & Back.

A brutal 10k obstacle course run when participants follow a trail route crossing rivers and lakes, climbing hills and mountains and crawling through bogs and swamps. Using the event as an opportunity to raise vital

funds for local charity SOSAD Dundalk, the team of motivated members raised €5,250.50 for the cause smashing their original goal of €2000.

They tackled muck, rain, wind and icy weather conditions to make it through the gruelling natural environment and torturous man-made obstacles battling hidden snipers, electric shocks, swamps and a 10ft wall among others.

the event before Christmas and was delighted to have raised money for the organisation.

“SOSAD do amazing work and are a great support for people especially in the Dundalk area.

Hopefully the money we have raised as a team will help them continue to keep up the brilliant and lifesaving work they do. We would love to say a special thank you to every single person who sponsored us for the event! Great things happen when people work together”, he stated.

A man who was found with a stolen boat on his premises was unable to provide Gardai with contact details of the man from whom he had received it.

Kevin McKenna, with an address at 15 The Willows, Castleblayney, Co Monaghan, stated that he had swapped one of his own boats for the vehicle with a man from the North. The exchange had taken place near Hackballscross and he had no name or contact details for the man, and was unable to identify his mode of transport.

The court heard that between December 8 and 13, 2014, a 17 foot speed boat valued at €5k

was taken from Castlepollard, Co Westmeath. The owner put up a number of adverts in an attempt to recover the boat and as a result of a call, Gardai visited the defendant’s repair yard in Carlingford on December 20.

The owner was able to identify the boat as his and Mr McKenna, who was co-operative, accepted this.

Solicitor, Conor MacGuill, stated that his client was involved in the purchase, sale and hire of boats, and that there was no suggestion he was involved in removing this boat. He pointed out that he made no effort to conceal the

fact that he had the boat and it was his advert on a website that had alerted the owner.

The boat had been returned to the owner and as a result the defendant had suffered a financial loss.

He explained that that 37-yearold father of two, who lives locally, was not as thorough as he should have been, but a conviction would cause a degree of damage to him.

Judge Flann Brennan adjourned the case for four weeks to allow witness expenses be paid and warned Mr McKenna to be more careful in the future.

Bush Post Primary School hosted a series of events and activities for Wellbeing Week to promote wellness and positive mental health at the end of January.

The week commenced anything but ordinarily. Students getting off the bus were greeted by Transition Year students dressed up in costumes. This promoted and encouraged a buzz around the school and boosted everyone’s mood on that miserable Monday morning.

Tuesday was the day of ‘Random Acts of Kindness’.

TY students went around the different classrooms with

the ‘Wheel of Kindness’. The wheel was divided into different sections with different acts of kindness. Random students were selected and got a chance to spin the wheel. Depending on the instruction they were encouraged to carry out the assigned act e.g. clean your room, say thank you etc. This was to encourage and promote a happy positive atmosphere around the school and at home.

Wednesday was ‘Joke of the Week’. Students from all years had been submitting their favourite cheesy jokes. These jokes were then read out on the intercom creating a fun

and lively atmosphere around the school.

Thursday saw Marion Reilly visit 1st years and TYs. She carried out laughing yoga which was a huge success. The philosophy behind laughter yoga is that laughing can lift your mood – even if it is staged.

You reap the benefits either way, it left students feeling happy and more energised.

Wellbeing Week concluded on Friday with the school’s first ever 4km Fun Run in aid of SOSAD. The Fun Run was organised by the Transition Year students and their CoOrdinator Mr Paul Malone.

Sinn Fein councillor Kevin Meenan has urged people to stay vigilant following a spate of incidents in Muirhevnamór in recent days.

Last week a shopkeeper McEneaney’s XL shop in Muirhevnamor was threat-

ened with a machete while last weekend a woman’s car was broken into while she attended her father’s month’s mind in The Holy Family church in Muirhevnamór..

Speaking after the two incidents local Sinn Fein councillor Kevin Meenan called on residents to be wary and

keep an eye out for suspicious behaviour around the area.

Man is given a chance to repay social welfare money A MAN who flew into Ireland from Italy on a number of occasions to collect Social Welfare has been given time to repay the money.

Judge Flann Brennan told Dirk Verdoorn with an address at 10 Herberts Drive, Crumlin, that he would deal with the case as leniently as possible if the compensation was paid as he adjourned the case to September 7.

Solicitor, Niall Lavery, stated that his client has co-operated with the authorities and a scheme of repayment is underway.

Mr Verdoorn was never in court before and the offence was borne out of

his misunderstanding of the regulations.

It was not a case that he was claiming social welfare in two jurisdictions.

At a previous sitting, the Dutch national, who claimed Social Welfare payments while living outside the country claimed he didn’t realise that he was doing anything wrong.

He was arrested on May 1 this year after he had collected the money from Dublin St, Post Office and the Department of Social Welfare estimated that they were out €8,110 in Jobseekers Benefit between July

2014 and April 2015.

In evidence it was stated that he was not residing in the country at the time but that he was flying in and out. When he was arrested he accepted that he was not resident in Ireland.

Solicitor, Niall Lavery, stated that Mr Verdoorn, was living here when he made the initial application and entitled to the benefit.

However, during the period he was living here for up to two weeks at a time as he sought employment. As he was coming back looking for work he felt he was entitled to the benefit.

do all agree that it is very important for everybody to exercise their right to vote and have a say in the country’s future.

There will be a new count centre this year for the election with the newly opened Ramada Resort (formerly the Park Inn hotel) on the Armagh Road the location for Saturday’s count.

Although the Louth constituency officially became a five seater for the first time in 2011 it was slightly skewed given that Seamus Kirk was automatically returned given his position at the time of Ceann Comhairle.

This time around there are five seats on offer and there is sure to be a mammoth battle ahead to determine who will prevail over the weekend. At the time of writ-

ing Gerry Adams, Imelda Munster, Fergus O’Dowd, Ged Nash and Declan Breathnach are the bookies favourites to win the five seats but one needs only to look at the last election when Peter Fitzpatrick tipped the form book on it’s head by finishing ahead of strongly fancied Fianna Fail candidate James Carroll to clinch the fifth and final seat.

Last week witnessed all the candidates bar Gerry Adams attend Vincent Browne’s People’s Debate which was held in the Carrickdale Hotel. Each candidate spoke on the matters which have resonated with the Louth electorate including jobs, mental health as well as the ongoing issue of the Louth County Hospital.

didates who turned up each got their chance to sell themselves to the electorate and try and convince them that they are the right person to represent Louth in the Dáil. There was criticism directed at host Vincent Browne however who was accused at spending too much time focusing his attention on Gerry Adams and Thomas ‘Slab’ Murphy.

Having listened to what each candidate has had to stay and what they stand for the roughly 100,000 people who are eligible to vote in Louth/East Meath now have to decide who will serve the county best over the next five years.

The choice is now yours and it is up to you to elect who you think is the right person to represent you. Voting will

One of Dundalk’s best loved entertainment venues, The Spirit Store, is celebrating after being named The Best Venue in Leinster at the IMRO (Irish Music Rights Organisation) awards ceremony in Dublin.

For owner, Mark Dearey, it was a vindication of all the hard work put into the venue in recent years, and a tribute to all who have been part of the success in any way.

Taking a break from canvassing ahead of the General Election, Mark expressed his delight at receiving the news of the award on Tuesday night last.

Students do dodgeball A group of DkIT students are planning a special dodgeball event to raise money for charity. Chloe Carr, Keyah Hand and Moriamo Animashaun have organised the event for today (Wed) February 24 in the MPC at DkIT, with funds going to Jigsaw Meath. Jigsaw is an organisation which is spread across Ireland, with programmes designed to make sure every young person has somewhere to turn to and someone to talk to.

Jigsaw Meath provides a free and confidential youth mental health support service for young people aged 12 to 25. Organisers are calling for support which starts at 10.30am and runs to 12.30pm. Alongside the tournament there will also be a raffle, a cake sale and a Jigsaw Information stand.

Stole items in a fit of temper A man who got into a fit of temper following a disagreement with his father stole a number of items from a supermarket.

As a result, Cian Taggart of 52 O’Hanlon Park, Dundalk, appeared at Dundalk District Court where he pleaded guilty to the offences before being

given the benefit of the Probation Act. Insp Yvonne Murphy stated that at 5.55pm on December 1 last year the defendant went into Tesco in the Long Walk, removed a security tag from a jacket and left without paying.

He returned soon after and took a pair of tracksuit bottoms.

The total value was €53 and the goods were not in a condition to be sold.

Solicitor, Roger McGinley, stated that the 20-year-old who had no previous convictions had been in town in the family car but his father had collected the vehicle and there was a disagreement. He added that

he had to walk home and in a fit of temper stole the items. He handed the €53 into court.

Judge Flann Brennan warned Mr Taggart not to do anything like this again and not to get so angry, stating that he would not be so lenient again.

He found the facts proven and dismissed the case.

School plans going out to tender Plans for the state of the art Coláiste Chú Chulainn and Coláiste Lú campus received their finishing touches this week in preparation for going to tender.

Louth County Council recently confirmed that the compulsory purchase order for a section of the new schools’ expansive site at the Marshes was completed without challenge thus giving the green light for the appointment of a building firm.

Accordingly, a team from Louth and Meath Education and Training Board (LMETB) met with the project’s lead architect Michael Grace of Newenham, Mulligan and Associates earlier this week to discuss final revisions to the plans before making

the invitation to tender to qualified construction firms.

Speaking after the meeting, Principal Deirdre Uí Liatháin confirmed, “We are delighted to have made it to this significant stage in the project. Although we have encountered delays, it is great to see progress and have the project live again with updated plans now ready for tender.”

This step will reinforce the significant progress Coláiste Chú Chulainn and Coláiste Lú have made since their establishment in 2013. Address education needs The PRO for the North East branch of the institute of guidance counsellors has hit out at the lack of attention political parties have paid to education during this general election campaign.

Gerry Malone who has been a guidance counsellor in Colaiste Rís for 30 years has spoken about morale being at it’s lowest ebb since he started in the teaching pro-

fession and has called on politicians to do something to reverse the crippling cuts that have decimated services in schools all over the country.

“I have been a Guidance counsellor at Colaiste Ris Dundalk for 30 years. Never have I seen morale as low in the teaching profession as it is at present.

“The main reason are the cuts in services

to our children, the ban on the replacement on middle management as older teachers retire and the lack of funding to allow teachers to engage in in-service training.

“Teachers have been asked to change work practices over the last five years and also have had their pay cut by 25 per cent since 2008. No wonder morale is so low”, added Mr Malone.

Monastery NS celebrations Monastery National School commenced its celebration of Catholic Schools Week by attending the launch of the week at a special mass at Redeemer Church Dundalk celebrated with Archbishop Eamon Martin on January 28.

Catholic Schools Week is an all-Ireland annual event which invites Catholic schools to give expression in a special way to the ethos of Catholic education. It is

a celebration of Catholic schools throughout Ireland, North and South which acknowledges the tremendous contribution that our Catholic schools make not just to Irish society.

They also hosted a series of celebratory events throughout the week including hosting a Grandparents Day in all classes and making St Brigid’s Crosses.

Grandparents were made feel very welcome

in all classes where pupils recited poems composed for Grandparents, sang songs, interviewed grandparents and told a few jokes. Grandparents read stories and shared accounts of the past in Ardee including going to school, serving Mass and life in Ardee long ago. Some Grandparents spoke of their strong Catholic beliefs and the importance of faith in their lives.
