A friendship that began as pen pals from across the Atlantic Ocean resulted in local woman travelling to the United States to act as bridesmaid for her lifelong friend.

Joanne White, originally from Ravensdale, began writing to Kim Marciniack when she was still at Faughart National School and immediately hit it off. A close bond was developed over 16 years culminating in Kim asking Joanne to be her bridesmaid.

As a result, Joanne made the trip to Indianapolis for the ceremony on Saturday October 30 and was honoured to be by her friend’s side for the big day.

A strongly worded statement released by the club stated that they were delighted to finally put an end to the long running dispute which was vital for the long term future of the club.

“Dundalk Football Club are delighted to confirm that we have concluded the process to resolve all of the longstanding legal problems surrounding the lease of Oriel Park. As a result of this process, Dundalk Football Club

have taken full ownership of the lease of Oriel Park and the YDC building.

“Since the takeover of the club from Gerry Matthews in August 2012, Dundalk FC have achieved unprecedented levels of success on the pitch.

Gardaí are investigating an arson attack which occurred on Sunday evening at a halting site in Woodland Park which is currently being refurbished by Louth County Council.

Last January Louth County Council removed twenty-three families from the halting site because it was not considered safe.

Over the last number of months the council have received funding to refurbish the site which will cost in the region of €681,000 when completed.

Gardaí confirmed that three bays were damaged during the attack and stated that nobody had been arrested so far.

are currently in emergency accommodation stated that families need to be told if the arson attack will cause a delay in opening the new site.

“The families heard yesterday there was a fire in Woodlands Halting Site on Sunday evening that supposedly spread to three bays.

“I have requested information from both the Council and the Garda regarding what damage was done, the circumstances surrounding the fire and if this will delay the opening. I was in the Halting site just on Friday taking pictures and recording and all we can see that’s been done is some painting.

It is nowhere near being finished on a health and safety standard,” noted Rebecca.

Frostival brings Christmas spirit to town The Christmas spirit is set to hit Dundalk in style on Saturday with a series of events planned to mark the Frostival festival.

Thousands of people are expected to flock into the Market Square area on Saturday, November 26 for an historic evening which includes the much awaited Dundalk FC Reception, the ‘Jumpers for Joy’ World Record Attempt and fundraiser plus we get to see the new Christmas illuminations

for the Town Centre for the first time.

Excitement is building for the Dundalk FC Public & Civic Reception, with club’s players, management, club representatives and event organisers looking forward to the event which will be held at 5.30pm.

Traffic restrictions will come into place from 3pm in the town centre as Dundalk is set to hold yet another World Record Attempt, this time by gathering

4,000 Christmas Jumper wearers in the Dundalk Town Centre. Registration (€5) has been taking place online via www. dundalk.ie/Christmas-jumpers and via registration desks in the Marshes, Tesco Extra and Dundalk BIDS Office.

The day will also feature a Craft Fair, street entertainment, Who’s Eddie on stage, with the official opening of Dundalk on Ice at 5pm and the switching on of the Christmas lights at 6pm.

Death of Vanessa Ryan

Awards for St Louis students—St Louis Secondary School Principal Lorraine Quigley had a happy task on Wednesday last of attending a ceremony to honour first years in UCD who received Entrance Scholarships. Two students from the Class of 2016 were presented with their awards. Aisling Mc Enteggart, with 615 points received an Academic Excellence award.

She was delighted with the award which will go towards some of the huge financial outlay First Year brings. Rachel Byrne who was also a very high scoring student was honoured for a very different reason. She was one of 16 candidates who successfully auditioned for and got a place in the very high profile and hugely successful UCD Choral Scholars.

There was shock around Dundalk on Friday evening when it was announced that Vanessa Ryan had suddenly passed away.

The 34-year-old had only recently been selected as a Local Area Representative for the Labour Party in the Dundalk-Carlingford electoral area with the aim of putting her name down on the ballot paper in the 2019 local elections.

Vanessa was the daughter of former councillor Jim Ryan and she was well known locally for her outstanding work with the Mourne Cooley Gullion Geotourism Project where she worked as a consultant archaeologist.

As part of her job getting the project up and running she developed a series of heritage tours around the border region aimed at promoting areas of natural beauty which had previously been overlooked.

The Fr Murray Park woman is survived by her loving daughters Isabella and Ayda, parents Jim and Ann, sister Carol, brothers John and Stephen and their partners Ciara and Stephanie, husband Florian, mother-in-law Myrian, father-in-law Didier, brother-in-law Stephen, nieces Rosie and Phoebe, aunts, uncles, relatives and friends.

Driver narrowly missed three children

A drunk driver who crashed into a wall and narrowly missed three children while disqualified was banned from the road for six years.

Vladimir Prokopiev of 11 Chestnut Grove, Bay Estate, Dundalk, was also given a four month sentence suspended for 18 months when he appeared at Dundalk District Court.

Evidence was given that the defendant was seen driving on the wrong side of the road entering Bay Estate on April 21 this year.

He failed to stop for Gardai and he crashed into a wall, narrowly avoiding three young children and then crashing into a second wall.

He became aggressive when arrested and had to be removed by force. There was a strong smell of al-

cohol and a blood sample was taken.

He had four previous convictions, including drink driving and had been banned for six years.

Solicitor, Niall Breen, stated his client accepted it was a serious matter and that he was disqualified at the time. He added that he had personal problems and turned to alcohol before getting into his car.

Judge Flann Brennan imposed a four-month sentence in relation to the drink driving and stated he would suspend it for 18 months due to his bad record.

In relation to the criminal damage he adjourned the case to January 18, stating that if compensation for the wall of €567 was not paid he would impose a sentence.

A 22-year-old woman was warned that she would be jailed for a long time if she put a foot wrong after being released on bail for a week at Dundalk District Court.

Nora McDonagh of 2 Afton Drive, Greenacres, Dundalk, asked for one final opportunity to deal with a drug addiction that was leading her to commit crimes.

Solicitor, Dermot Monahan, stated that his client had deteriorated in recent months after becoming addicted to ‘street tablets’. He asked that the case be put back for a Probation Report on the understanding that if she didn’t deal with the problems she would go to jail.

The court also heard that Ms McDonagh had been given 100

hours Community Service in March this year but had only completed 39 hours. She had been given both written and verbal warnings.

Mr Monahan stated that if somebody was suffering from a drug addiction they would not act in a coherent way, and that she had grown up in a family where criminality was to the fore.

He urged the court to give his client one more chance, but Judge Flann Brennan asked how many final chances has she had already.

“You breeze in here as if there is very little consequence. There is a certain amount of forethought where these crimes are concerned as nobody decides not to pay for fuel at a filling station on the spur of the moment. People do that

deliberately”, Judge Brennan told the defendant as he adjourned the case to make a decision.

“If you put a foot wrong in the coming week you can forget about it completely and you will be in custody for a long time”, he warned.

Ms McDonagh pleaded guilty to a number of charges including theft of a tracksuit valued at €70 from the Marshes Shopping Centre on August 31 this year, and a mobile phone worth €400 from Clanbrassil St on August 19.

She also admitted taking shorts valued at €12.99 from Heatons on September 15, and leaving without paying for fuel from Applegreen on three occasions between May 16 and August 10 this year. The total value was €193.53.

RNLI Lifeboat Flag Day 2016 The North Louth Fundraising Branch of the RNLI will hold their annual Flag Day on Saturday December 3 in Dundalk, Blackrock, and Carlingford areas.

Over €6,000 was raised last year and the organisers hope to match or better that amount this year.

The RNLI relies on public donations and legacies to maintain its

rescue service. As a charity it is separate from, but works alongside, government controlled and funded coastguard services.

Last year in Ireland, the RNLI’S crews

from its 45 lifeboat stations launched 1,089 times, bringing 1,414 people to safety.

The important role of the Local Enterprise Office (LEO) in promoting business in the area was highlighted by the expansion of the range of services on offer in recent times.

Based at the Town Hall in Dundalk, and with a presence in Drogheda, the Local Enterprise Office is part of Louth County Council and supports entrepreneurs and SMEs through advice, training, mentoring and finance.

Thomas McEvoy, Louth’s Head of Enterprise pointed out that the office is the first port of call for anyone in business, whether you’re running an established business, have just started up or have a new business idea.

Thomas has six colleagues who work directly with local business to provide specialist supports. Three Business Advisers, Peggy McGlynn, Sarah Mallon and Cormac McCann each fulfil a different role. Peggy manages the training and development programme and the schools enterprise

Clans open new pitch

The Clans continued their centenary celebrations last week as they unveiled a brand new second pitch which is located next to their current pitch on the Ecco Road.

The whole club came out for what was a momentous occasion as Clans from all generations gathered at the clubhouse before marching down the road towards their new pitch behind a piper.

Outgoing Leinster Chairman, John Horan, was the guest of honour and was accompanied

by Clans committee members Leslie Toal and Fra Kieran. Fr Padraig Keenan was also on hand to perform a special blessing of the new pitch. According to club PRO Maurice Harrison the club were delighted with the fantastic turn-

“We had over 300 people come down to witness the opening of our new pitch which was phenomenal given how bad the weather was. Gerry Duffy was the master of ceremonies and he did a great job and we had our very first game on the new pitch featuring legends of the club which was very enjoyable.

The new pitch was badly needed for the ever expanding club given the increasing number of underage

teams and ladies teams.

According to Maurice the extra pitch gives the club a lot more breathing space when it comes to organising fixtures in the future.

After the game between the Clans legends everybody returned to the clubhouse for a meal and the announcement of the annual club player awards. Sinead McGill picked up the ladies player of the year award while Micheal McDonnell picked up the male player award.

Dundalk Karate - CIKA Dundalk joined fellow members of CIKA (Champions International Karate Association) Ireland and trained with European Champion and World Bronze Medalist, Emma Lurcraft in Collinstown, Dublin recently, where Kata (form) was the name of the game. Members of Dundalk Karate also had an opportunity to train one-on-one with Sensei Lurcraft, and with numerous members taking advantage of these training sessions, and with all who availed of these sessions delighted at such opportunities, everyone is already talking about Sensei Lurcraft’s next visit to CIKA Ireland next year.

Progress of Greenway welcomed

The work to complete a pathway from Carlingford to Newry is continuing with the latest phase of the project now completed.

At the latest meeting of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) committee between Newry & Mourne Down District Council/Louth County Council, members were informed that they will be invited to visit the ‘Albert Basin Greenway’ to observe the progress and completion of this latest phase of the Greenway. The Greenway would see a walk/cycle/run path created along the Middlebank from the Albert Basin to Victoria Lock in Newry and would link the Carlingford/Omeath Greenway to the towpath - enabling an off road route from Carlingford to Portadown.

Cllr Edel Corrigan, the joint chair of the committee, welcomed the latest development.

“We would normally write about every two weeks and then exchange gifts for Christmas and birthdays. We sent photos so we knew what each other looked like and all about our families and interests”, explained Joanne who revealed that friendship was strengthened by visits over two summers while they were in their teens.

“When I was 15 Kim came over to us for three weeks and she still reminds me that it rained

every day. I then went over to San Antonio in Texas the next year and for a 16-year-old that was an unbelievable trip. It was very hot and Kim’s mother was so good to me. She took me all over to see the sights and I even got to Las Vegas for a family

reunion which was amazing”, she continued.

College and work commitments meant there were no more trips after that but the friendship remained strong.

New technology replaced the letter-writing and the contact was maintained through Facebook and occasional postcards as Kim spent a lot of time travelling through her work with the Peace Corps.

One of those Facebook messages came as a complete shock to Joanne when she was asked to be bridesmaid.

“I was really surprised but absolutely delighted to be asked, and I really enjoyed the event.

“The wedding was on Saturday October 30 and it was a great experience, although it was a bit different from over here. The bride and groom had photos taken before the ceremony which started at 4pm and lasted for only about a half an hour.

“We then had the reception which finished about 10pm when everyone returned to their hotels, so that is something we weren’t used to”, she added.

The memorable trip was completed on the way home when Anthony proposed in New York and the couple are looking forward to planning their own wedding.

Dispute is now brewing over the ownership of Carlingford Lough

U ncertainties over the ownership of Carlingford Lough have arisen following comments made in the British Parliament by the Secretary of State for the North, James Brokenshire about Lough Foyle.

When asked by the shadow secretary David Anderson whether the boundary of County Derry with Ireland is on the western shore of Lough Foyle, Mr Brokenshire replied “The government’s position remains that the whole of Lough Foyle is within the UK.” The question was asked in the context of

a discussion over fishing rights now that the British are set to leave the Common Fisheries Policy. Lough Foyle lies between Donegal and Derry. The Lough has been claimed by both jurisdictions.

This reply has prompted Green Party councillor Mark Dearey to find out if the secretary of state holds a similar view with regards to Carlingford Lough which straddles both Co. Louth and Co. Down.

According to Mark he has written to Caroline Lucas, a Green MP in Westminister to ask James Brokenshire in parliament if he is also claiming Carlingford Lough following the de-

cision to leave the EU. “The ownership of these loughs is a problem between the Irish and British governments that goes back years. Britain’s claim of ownership of the Lough was never accepted by the Irish government but it has never really been a major issue until the decision to leave the EU came about.

“I have written a letter to Green MP Caroline Lucas asking her to raise the question with Mr Brokenshire to see if he feels the same way about Carlingford Lough as he does about Lough Foyle. To be honest I thought his comments were unnecessary and a bit aggressive and

Leah to perform at Christmas concert

OG Christmas show The Owen Gray and the OG Christmas show and dinner will take place in the Crowne Plaza on Saturday December 17.

The show will feature comedian Big O, local star Paudie Breen, and Joe Dolan tribute act Tom O’Rourke, along with special guests.

Talented musician, Leah Kirwan, has been selected to the stage as part of the Down Syndrome Ireland (DSI) Christmas Carols First Noel Concert at Christ Church Cathedral on Thursday December 1 from 8pm to 10pm.

Leah first made headlines with her brother Noah, who has Down syndrome after a video of them singing an acoustic version of David Guetta’s, Titanium went viral.

The Kirwan family, Dad Darren; Mum Richenda; Leah (16); Hannah (14); Elaina (10) and Noah (9) – are still overwhelmed by the reaction the video received, which now has over 2.5 million views.

School have since recorded the song ‘Titanium’ in aid of Down Syndrome Ireland, which can be downloaded from iTunes and Google Play.

The song reached No 4 in the Irish iTunes Charts.

Speaking about the reaction and the opportunity to sing at the DSI Christmas Carol Concert, Leah Kirwan said, “I can’t believe the attention the video received but I’m delighted it did. Noah is my brother and my best friend, we love making each other smile. Like me, he loves music especially Irish music and Titanium is his favourite song.

He really loves the version the school recorded which includes some Irish elements”, Leah and Noah she stated.

Science Week swept over the DkIT campus this week as more than 1,000 school children from across the region donned white lab coats and goggles to participate in a variety of science-related activities organised by the Institute.

Science Week is a national event that celebrates the fascinating worlds of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).

DkIT supported the initiative with a bigger and better programme than ever before.

One of the main activities included a visit by W5, Ireland’s award-winning science and discovery centre which delivered

an interactive, hour-long show to sixth class students. The show looked at forces and chemical reactions, including Newton’s Laws of Motion, acid-base reactions, and gyroscopic force.

Students were invited to participate in live experiments, scientific role play and even learned some rocket science!

Arjan Van Rossum, Head of Department of Applied Sciences led the Science Week 2016 programme at DkIT revealed the reasons behind the event.

On Tuesday November 29 at 8.30pm An Tain Arts Centre will host the film, Son of Saul, with tickets €7.

László Nemes’ stunning debut feature takes its title from central character Saul, a Hungarian-Jewish prisoner at the AuschwitzBirkenau concentration camp who, in his job as a Sonderkommando, is forced to assist in the grisly day-to-day mass exterminations.
