A proposal by Louth County Council Chief Executive Joan Martin to write off a €1.3m debt from Drogheda hosting the Fleadh has been rejected by the majority of councillors.

During Louth County Council’s monthly meeting on Monday afternoon councillors voted by 14 votes to 9 against the Chief Executive’s proposal.

According to Fianna Fail Councillor Conor Keelan, 14 councillors rejected Chief Executive Joan Martin’s proposal at a monthly meeting held on Monday, June 21.

“Nine voted for it and six councillors were absent. I voted against the proposal because I feel it would be a large financial imposition,” said Conor.

Maria proud to raise flag for LGBTQ+ community—The Pride Rainbow Flag which represents the LGBTQ+ community was raised over the town hall last Thursday as recently appointed Cathaoirleach of Dundalk Municipal District Maria Doyle made the decision to raise the flag during Pride Month. Cllr Doyle said that the raising of the flag represented a symbol of solidarity to the LGBTQ+ community in Dundalk.

“However, I’d prefer if that money was spent on playgrounds, infrastructure and housing repairs.”

Ms Martin recommended the council write off the debt over the next 15 years at €100,000 per year.

Conor added: “I and others feel that Comhaltas

nationally should make themselves available to step in here with a view to reducing the cost that has arisen in Drogheda.

“Comhaltas may not be able to cover the full cost but may be able to reduce a significant portion. Failte Ireland could possibly provide additional funding.

“I didn’t think it would be something our constituents would accept. Frankly, I feel that the money would be better spent on other projects.”

Labour Party Cllr Pio Smyth voted in favour of

the proposal and said he was “disappointed” with the result because “no-one put up an alternative”.

“The Council has gone to Comhaltas but it doesn’t appear that it will be a solution. This issue will come up again this time next year and it will still be on the books,” he said.

“We are paying it and that’s the reality. That’s what happens. You can budget for a Fleadh but you can’t be guaranteed you will get all of the money in.”

Joanna Byrne was the only Drogheda councillor who voted to reject the proposal.

“Louth County Council is operating off an insufficient budget so I didn’t want to take on an unnecessary debt,” said Joanna.

“We can’t facilitate pot holes being filled at the minute and there are bigger issues such as housing repairs.

“There are nearly 700 people on the housing adaptation list who are waiting to get grants to make vital changes to their houses.”

Two landbanks in Louth including one in Dundalk have been snapped up by the IDA as part of the government agency’s long term strategic plan to position Louth and the wider North-East region to compete for FDI investment.

The land acquisitions, with a combined total of 149 acres are situated at the townland of Killally in Dundalk and Mell in Drogheda.

The acquisition of these landbanks is part of IDA Ireland’s overall property programme which is supported by the Government

through the Department of Enterprise, Trade & Employment.

The FDI performance in this region has been strong over the past five years with employment growing among IDA clients within the Engineering & Industrial Technologies, Medical Technologies, Technology, International Financial Services and Life Sciences sectors. Co. Louth is home

to 30 IDA Ireland client companies employing more than 4,372 people.

In recent years, IDA Ireland supported companies including WUXI, Wasdell, Almac, PCI Pharma Services, Amazon Web Services and Simply NUC have announced investments and expansions for Co. Louth which has driven the demand for property solutions.

Gardaí appeal for witnesses following fatal RTA in Ardee

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses following a fatal road traffic collision at Cookstown in Ardee on Monday. The collision involved a car and a lorry and occurred at approximately 2pm. The driver of the car, a man in his 40’s, was pronounced deceased at the scene a short time later. The driver of the lorry was uninjured.

The man’s body was taken to the morgue at Our Lady of Lourdes hospital in Drogheda where a postmortem will take place at a later date. The Dublin/ Derry road was closed for a number of hours on Monday evening as a technical examination was launched by gardaí.

pened following that examination by Garda forensic collision investigators.

Gardaí are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed this incident to come

There are not too many coaches in Ireland let alone Dundalk who can lay claim to coaching a Champions League winner but Stephen Connolly is one such man having worked with Chelsea midfielder Christian Pulisic in the US ten years ago.

The talented Pulisic was just an eleven-year old kid back then attending a soccer camp in his hometown of Hershey, Pennsylvania and one of the coaches on that course was Dundalk man Stephen Connolly who recalls this hugely talented young player who was streets ahead of his peers.

Runners warned to steer clear of buzzard nesting site

Runners in the north of the county have been warned to take care when on the road after a man was attacked last week by a buzzard on the Gyles Quay Road last week. Tom McDermott was out on his run when he felt a clatter on his head almost causing him to fall. Initially he thought he must have hit an overhanging branch but when he looked around he saw a buzzard circling above him. Speaking on RTE Liveline Tom admitted he got a shock from the incident which left him with bleeding on his head.

They will do all they can to protect their eggs and somebody could get very hurt if they are attacked by one of these birds,” stated Jim.

Free and subsidised higher education courses announced for Louth

TWENTY-TWO free and subsidised higher education places have been announced for Louth under the Springboard+ 2021 and Human Capital Initiative (HCI) Pillar 1 initiatives. The courses will run at Dundalk Institute of Technology, and will open for applications on Wednesday, 16th June.

The courses on offer in Louth this year include a Higher Diploma in Science in Computing, a Graduate Diploma in Agri-Analytics and a Certificate of Supply Chain Management.

Over 10,000 places are available across both programmes nationwide in 2021.

Springboard+ provides free courses for people who are unemployed, people who have taken time out of work or education to raise their families or care for loved ones, or people who want to upskill. Now in its tenth year, over 75,000 people have benefitted from Springboard+ to date.

Courses under the HCI Pillar 1 programme are aimed at graduates and offer incentivised places for them to reskill in areas of skills shortage and emerging technologies. These are being run alongside, and complementary to, the Springboard+ offerings.

For those in employment, the Government will fund 90% of the cost of a Springboard+ or HCI Pillar 1 course. The programmes are managed by the Higher Education Authority on behalf of the Department of Education and Skills.

Launching the programme, Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science, Simon Harris, T.D. said, “As we emerge from the Covid-19 pandemic, we will need to ensure that people have the skills they need.

“Springboard+ and the graduate conversion courses under the Human Capital Initiative provide a targeted response to skills needs, enabling people to upskill and reskill in areas of critical importance which have come to the fore as a result of Covid-19, including Cybersecurity, Virtual Reality, Health Innovation, and Logistics.

“Programmes in Climate/Sustainability and Energy which are central to the Programme for Government are also being funded.”

Also commenting on Wednesday, Dr. Vivienne Patterson, Head of Skills and Engagement at the Higher Education Authority, said: “Springboard+ and HCI courses give people who are unemployed, those looking to return to work and people in employment a great opportunity to upskill or reskill – particularly in areas where there are skills shortages. We work closely with employers across the country to ensure that the courses that are on offer are in-line with industry needs and best practices.

We are delighted that this year, 90% of courses will be delivered in a flexible manner – which will allow more people to engage with the courses which may have been inaccessible to them before, because of work or family commitments, or because of where they live. This means people from Louth can, effectively, participate in courses anywhere in Ireland – and vice versa.” Helpline – 1800 303 523.

to stand up for farmers Local TD Peter Fitzpatrick has urged the government to stand up for farmers stating that they are the backbone of the country. Speaking in the Dáil the independent TD stated that the government had to support the farmers during upcoming CAP negotiations.

“I welcome the opportunity to take part in this important debate. The Louth and east Meath constituency that I represent has a strong rural and farming community. I have dealt with this community on many issues over the years.

It is one of the most dedicated and hardest working sectors in the economy.

In the north of the county, we have the Cooley Peninsula and Faughart regions, where there are farming families going back many generations. Further south and towards the middle of the county, we have many more farming communities that have dedicated their working lives to the land,” explained Deputy Fitzpatrick.

“It is clear that farming faces many challenges. The prices farmers are getting for their produce are constantly under pressure, yet prices are not falling for the consumer. As we debate the CAP negotiations today, let us be clear - farming is the backbone of rural Ireland.

In terms of numbers, the farming and food sector employs over 300,000 peo-

Deputy Peter Fitzpatrick. ple throughout the country. In terms of exports, it contributed more than €13 billion in 2020. Put another way, the sector contributed more than €250 million in exports every single week of the year in 2020. This is a staggering figure. The

employment figures show that, outside of the Dublin area, the farming and food sector provides almost 14% of total employment.

That is more than one in ten people. When we look beyond direct employment, it is estimated that the out-

put multiplier is 2.5 for the beef industry and 2.0 for the dairy and food processing sectors. This compares favourably with the rest of the economy, where foreign-owned firms have a multiplier of 1.2 while the rest of the economy has a multiplier of 1.4. It is clear that the farming and food industry is vital to the Irish economy, not only in terms of money, but also in terms of communities.

“The Government must do more to stand up for the farming and food sector. I agree with the IFA’s statement that the approach to CAP reform by the EU, along with the Government’s climate action Bill, could shut down farming as we know it. That is not what we should be doing. Some farmers are being hit with substantial cuts under CAP. On top of this, we will see the Government’s climate Bill resulting in considerable additional regulation and, as a result, significant cost increases in the farming sector. Ultimately, the end consumer will pay for these costs. I know from my dealings with the farming sector that it supports climate action. Farmers want to see carbon emissions reduced and a greener society, but how can they support this, which will involve significant capital expenditure, if they are going to receive less money?

It simply does not add up,” claimed Fitzpatrick.

“The facts are there for all to see. Last year was the seventh year in a row that food prices declined. In the same period, the cost of producing top-quality, safe and sustainable Irish food produce increased. That is simply not sustainable.

We are either going to support this sector or we are not. Words or vague commitments are not enough.

Action and real support are needed. For example, there is a commitment by the Government to provide €1.5 billion from the carbon tax for agri-environment measures. Where is that commitment today?

Is the money ring-fenced?

When can the farming sector avail of this commitment?

“I put on the record my full support for the farming and food sector. I acknowledge the great contribution that it makes to the economy. I also acknowledge the great farming communities of north Louth, mid-Louth and the south of the county.

It is clear that these communities need the Government to support them during the CAP negotiations.

“I call on the Minister to commit fully to the Government’s pledge to provide €1.5 billion to help the farming sector through agri-environment measures. Will he confirm that this money will be made available to the farming sector?,” asked Deputy Fitzpatrick.

Maeve wants memorial to commemorate those who passed away during pandemic Cllr Maeve Yore has called on Louth County Council to consider and organise an appropriate memorial item to commemorate all the citizens of Louth who passed during the Covid-19 pandemic and lockdown.

Cllr Yore added that the memorial item should be organised and held when restrictions have lifted and it is safe to do so.

She put forward the motion at Louth County Council’s monthly meeting which was held on Monday, June 21.

“It’s been such a tough year for everybody. Nobody who has lost

a loved one in the last 16 months has been able to grieve properly for them,” said Cllr Yore.

“I think there’s a tsunami of grief for everyone who lost loved ones during this very difficult time.

“I don’t know what type of memorial would be held, maybe a candle lit one would be nice. If it was county-wide, it could be held at County Hall.”

Cllr Yore added: “We had friends and family who passed during Covid and there was only ten of us allowed at the mass.

“Irish people are brilliant in of-

fering their support and there was great comfort in people lining up outside the church.

“I think a memorial would be an opportunity for us all to remember the lives that have been lost in a simple way.”

She continued: “Perhaps we could put an everlasting candle as a permanent reminder. Last year was awful for everyone but it taught us a lot about family and community.

“I think 2020 will be remembered as a year of mourning for the people we lost and our way of life.”

Grand success for More supports needed for people Erinn and Sophie with disabilities—O’Murchú

St Vincent’s students Erinn Leavy and Sophie McCardle were awarded the Grand Bronze Award in the #GYSTB Hong Kong’s Global Youth science & Technology Bowl 2021 last weekend.

The deadly duo had been nominated by SciFest, the largest second-level STEM fair programme in Ireland, to represent Ireland on the world stage and last weekend Erinn and Sophie put forward their project entitled ‘’An Analysis of Physiological and Running Metrics in 3km Cross Country Running in Comparison to Track and Treadmill’.

Judging took place live on Saturday on Facebook and the Awards were announced live at the Award Ceremony on Sunday.

Erinn and Sophie under the guidance of science teacher John White are no strangers to competition having

Erinn Leavy and Sophie McArdle. represented St Vincent’s with the same project in 2020 when they were both in second year. Off the back of their success at the Young Scientists exhibition the duo proceeded to qualify for the SciFest 2020 National Final. Having impressed judges at the finals of the SciFest competition their project was deemed to be good enough to be put forward on the world stage where they were rewarded with that Grand Bronze Award on

Sunday.

A message from St Vincent’s to the girls congratulated them on their outstanding achievement.

Disability issues have been raised in the Dáil by Deputy Ruairí Ó Murchú, who said the engine of services provision is ‘kept going with baling twine’.

He also highlighted the need for the an overall of how disability housing is provided.

The Sinn Féin TD said there had been issues with people with disabilities ‘falling between stools’, particularly for ‘adults who do not have the capacity to live life as the rest of us do and who may have been unlucky in not having had family supports, as a result, in some cases, of terrible tragedy’.

He said: ‘It may happen that such people’s care falls between disability, social care and mental health services.

‘We need to look

‘Sometimes we are giving people whatev-

er support we can but it is a case of keeping the engine going with bale and twine.

‘It is not acceptable that we are failing these people’.

are being missed, he said, and instead, people are left waiting until acute care is required. ‘We all know such services are not necessarily in place.

That issue must be addressed’, he said.

Housing provision for people with disabilities were also raised by Deputy Ó Murchú who said there were huge backlogs in councils, while the whole system needs to be examined.

He said: I have spoken to the Minister of State Anne Rabbitte before about particular issues around housing provision for people with disabilities.

‘There are parents of children with severe disabilities who cannot avail of appropriate housing provision.

Again, this needs to be looked at across the board.

‘There is also the is-

sue of the major backlog in local authorities in dealing with applications for housing adaptation grants for people with disabilities. That needs to be reviewed because there are people with real difficulties that are not being dealt with adequately.

‘It will require a multi-departmental solution. We will probably have to look at the methodology and process around this provision across the board because it is entirely failing. It is not just the fault of local authorities and the fact they are underfunded. There also needs to be more interaction with the HSE and other agencies’.

Deputy Ó Murchú said that he had requested a meeting with Minister Rabbitte to discuss specific Louth cases.

Protestors recall viral black lives matter photo

THREE Dundalk friends have spoken about their experience one year after a photograph of them at a Black Lives Matter protest in Dundalk in June 2020 went viral.

Moyo Badun, Kiitan Amao and Sean Hill were pictured standing together holding signs at the Market Square by photographer Fra Lucchesi.

They subsequently posted a throwback photograph of them together as children which was liked a million times.

“My life hasn’t changed much but I’ve seen a lot of changes in Dundalk. I

think people in Dundalk are making more of an effort to talk about these things,” said Kiitan.

“We showed our power as a collective. It’s amazing what we can achieve when we come together.”

The 19-year-old former St Mary’s College student who lives near the Point Road told The Dundalk Leader that overall, he had a good experience growing up in the town.

“However, some people did make racial comments towards me because they were trying to get under my skin,” said Kiitan.

“Last year was really about getting our voices out there about what happened in America. I’ve always felt like I can make a change in the world.

“I look back at the protest as a very positive experience. It was very much an uplifting experience for me.”

Sean Hill, aged 20, from Muirhevnamor became life-long friends with Moyo and Kiitan when they were pupils at St Joseph’s NS. “The year went by so quickly with Covid and all the restrictions. I think there has been a big dif-

ference in the way people see everyone in general,” said Sean.

“The experience was incredible to be able to get out there and put across my thoughts and speak about my friends and their experiences.

“I saw what they went through growing up and I felt like I had to do something. People would mostly make racist remarks at football matches.”

Sean added: “It’s totally unacceptable to say things like that. People should be treated the same no matter what their skin colour is.”

The core objective of the Community Monuments Fund is to support the conservation, maintenance, protection and promotion of local monuments and historic sites.

It contains a number of different measures aimed at enabling conservation works to be carried out on archaeological monuments which are deemed to be significant and in need of urgent support, encouraging access to archaeological monuments and improving their pres-

entation and also building resilience in archaeological monuments to enable them to withstand the effects of climate change.

Senator McGreehan commented, “This is great news, the funding awarded to these structures is fantastic. It is so important to take care of our structural

heritage, it is part of who we are and our history.

“This funding will be money well spent and I really look forward to seeing the results on these projects.”

Cuchulainn Sean gives redundancy advice Mountain Bike League Dundalk Leader 23rd June 2021

A LOCAL man has spoken about his experience of being made redundant and finding a new job in a bid to help others in the same situation.

Originally from Jenkinstown, Sean Ryan currently lives in Manydown Close in Dundalk. The 39-year-old is a manager in KBC bank Ireland which has recently announced its intention to exit the Irish market.

“I will be due to be made redundant at some stage either later in the year or early

Competitive cycling will return to the town this coming Tuesday (June 29th) with the commencement of the Cuchulainn Mountain Bike League. The club’s off road committee have mixed up the format for the 2021 season and the league will be a mix of time trials, cross country and enduro styles events, all starting in either Ravensdale Park or the Lumpers. There will be a grand total of 9 rounds, which will see riders competing up until late August.

Round 5 will also incorporate the Gerry McCabe Memorial Louth Hill Climb Championships, in memory

of one of the finest mountain bikers ever produced in the county.

The league has been a huge success the last number of years, however like a lot of events Covid saw the league take a hiatus in 2020.

The committee has worked tirelessly to ensure the event got back up & running for this season. In addition to the main league, they have also added a Junior section for riders from under 14 up to under 18.

“Unfortunately, you are in competition with other people and you have to show the best things about yourself.”

Sean continued: “The second piece of advice I’d give is to practice for interviews.

Identify the skills you have that set you apart from other people.

“I’d also like to advise people to look after their mental health. You might have become redundant through no fault of your own.

“Finally, I’m a Peace Commissioner. Any sort of voluntary work looks good on your CV. It gives a sense of character. I appreciate not everyone has the time for volunteering but if at all possible, do volunteer.”

Republicans gathered at the Quay on Sunday to remember the murders of John and Patrick Watters that occurred on that spot 100 years ago.

The Watters Brothers Sinn Féin Cumann, named in honour of the two men who were murdered that night, organised the small event chaired by Councillor Kevin Meenan.

Councillor Kevin Meenan chaired the event and introduced Cumann member Damien Johnston who read the poem ‘The Mother’ written by Padraig Pearse and is aptly inscribed on the Watters family gravestone. Wreaths were laid on behalf of the Cumann by

The main speaker at the event was Ruairí Ó Murchú TD, who outlined the story of what happened on the night.

The Black and Tans entered the residence of what is now the Windmill Bar and ordered the three sons of the house outside.

One son, Bernard made good his escape out the back while his two brothers were not so fortunate and found themselves being marched barefoot around the corner onto the bridge and gunned down in cold blood.

Cllr Meenan calls on Irish Water to sort discolouration issue Dundalk Councillor Kevin Meenan has called on Irish Water to ‘immediately investigate’ the cause of water discolouration in the town centre on Tuesday.

The Sinn Féin representative for Dundalk South said he had been contacted by a number of businesses in the town centre on Tuesday morning in relation to problems with the water colour.

Cllr. Meenan, who is vice chair of Dundalk Municipal District, said the latest issue comes days after a major problem that affected hundreds of homes in the south of the town last week following a major pipe burst on the Inner Relief Road.

‘I have to say that I am not happy with the lack of clarity from Irish Water about the cause of the problem and why it is occurring. People, including householders and those who are running businesses, have not been given proper advice about what to do.

‘They have been told to run the water from the taps for a few moments to see whether it clears, but not what happens if it remains discoloured.

‘I will remain in touch with Irish Water to ensure that the latest incident is fixed in a timely manner and to get to the bottom of what has caused this in the first place’.

VTOS Dundalk has launched its exciting new course list for September 2021. With a wide range of courses available including Job Skills, Business and IT, our courses have something on offer to suit all levels of learning.

You can gain certification in QQI, ICDL or Leaving Certificate, helping you prepare for Further/ Higher Education or employment.

VTOS offers a welcoming and supportive learning environment in a town centre location.

You can apply to VTOS if you are over 21, and if you or a dependent spouse, are on a social welfare payment or signing for credits.

Whilst on the course, you retain your social welfare payments and may receive an additional travel and meal allowance.

All Courses take place during daytime hours, from September to May over 1 year. Course holidays are the same as post-primary schools including mid-term, Christmas, Easter and Summer breaks. Course materials and exam fees are free.

ALONE is looking for volunteers to visit older people in the community who may be lonely or would like extra social contact.

ALONE volunteers offer friendship and companionship, provide assistance to solve everyday problems, and support the older person to engage with local events and activities.
