Traders in Bridge Street face an anxious wait to find out if they will be included for a funding upgrade under the Government’s Project Ireland 2040 programme.

Traders were disappointed last year when it was announced that Bridge Street would not be part of the current upgrade of Clanbrassil Street/ St Nicholas Quarter which got underway last week.

In March of 2018, Frank Pentony, Director of Services in

Louth County Council announced that Bridge Street would not initially be part of any upgrade work as the local authority didn’t have enough funds for its inclusion in the project. However, it was explained to traders in the Bridge Street area that the council would continue to look for funding streams to allow work be done at a later date.

Last week it was announced that a funding appeal for Bridge Street had been rejected which leaves the street in limbo.

Louth County Council are set to appeal this decision as they believe Bridge Street can easily tie in with the current work being done in Clanbrassil Street at a later date.

According to Joanne Lavelle, who is a part of the Bridge Street Community and Traders Area Regeneration group, the decision to reject the area for funding has left

traders disappointed and angry.

“We are very disappointed with this latest development and to be honest we can’t understand why they have reached this decision. We have been told by Louth County Council that they are committed to upgrade Bridge Street but it now seems that this commitment is in jeopardy.

“I’m very happy for other areas and projects that

have received funding but I honestly can’t understand why the powers that be have decided that Bridge Street is not in need of an upgrade. Bridge Street and Linenhall Street are in dire need of repair and you have to wonder what criteria the people who make these decisions are using.

“We understand that Louth County Council are appealing this decision and we would love to meet up with council officials

to find out exactly what is happening here. We want to be part of the improvements that are happening around the town and we feel that we are being abandoned. I would like to think that the council are still supporting us and can give us some cause for hope but as I said earlier first we need to get sitting down with somebody in there to hear their thoughts on the current situation,” stated Joanne.

Monasterboice Inn has been nominated for SFA Sustainable Energy Award, and Community and Council Best energy Smart Imitative Award.

The award centres on the Monasterboice Inn’s new conference centre which was designed and built to EXEED (Excellence in energy efficiency design) specifications, and Roseanne Donegan revealed that the business is honoured to have been nominated.

“We are very proud to be EXEED certified, EA0004, the fourth business in the country to hold this very important certification,” she stated.

“The overall aim was to design and construct a new conference centre and upgrade the existing building to deliver a new restaurant/ conference centre with superior energy efficiency whilst delivering the required energy service to enhance the customer comfort without compromising customer experience,” continued

The first thing the management of Monasterboice Inn did was to hire an EXEED consultant Andy Wood who began by holding meetings with all involved with the project.

“These meetings ensured that the whole team understood the concept and worked together to achieve our aim.

“In other words, to make sure they were all singing off the same hymn sheet, conscious of each other’s tasks and the overall energy efficiency.

“Luckily there is a very strong stream running at the back of the Inn, which was necessary to re-direct during the work, so we harnessed the energy from our stream by placing three kilometres of pipes under the powerful stream water, the pipes are arranged in a closed circuit, from which energy is extracted.

“We installed a humidity table and heat pumps replacing our old gas burning

boilers,” she added.

The project involved other sustainable energy opportunities with the installation of the following: Eurosmart Controls (intelligent system choosing the most efficient source of heating or cooling depending on ambient temperature and business demands); Airtight Rooms; Triple A Glazed windows; Superior Insulation; Harnessing the hot air from kitchen extract fans to heat water; and Low energy dimmable lighting In order to be certified

by EXEED you must apply, and if successful their independent auditors spend a day or two at your premises, inspecting the work, equipment and the results, and only award the Certificate if they deem your project worthy.

“We are absolutely delighted to be nominated for the awards and thank SFA and Community and Council Awards for their nominations,” concluded Roseanne.

Four clubs in Louth are to benefit from €285,000 in sports capital funding this year after the successful applications were revealed.

The recently announced grants represent the first set of allocations under the 2018 round of the SCP and relate to projects previously deemed invalid under the 2017 round of the programme which have now been corrected.

Dealgan Boxing Club will receive the largest share after being granted a total of €137,000 towards an extension to the club.

FC will receive €58,000 for floodlight installation and upgrade of playing surface, with Dundalk & Carlingford Sailing Club to benefit from €18,500 for equipment for junior sailing. The remaining recipient is Termonfeckin Celtic FC who have been granted €71,000 for an astro turf pitch project.

Minister Shane Ross said: “The Sports Capital Programme remains an essential vehicle for providing suitable sports facilities and equipment to allow as many people participate in sport as possible.”

The Zoe Murphy Appeal will host a special draw in The Marshes this Saturday and Sunday.

Top prize is a €500 Marshes voucher, and second prize is a Valentine’s Getaway in the Nuremore Hotel. Third prize is a signed Dundalk FC jersey and season ticket, while fourth prize is a Ladies or Gents watch from Goldstar Jewellers.

Revenue winning war on fuel laundering Revenue commissioners in government buildings have insisted that marking diesel remains an effective tool against fuel laundering and fuel fraud.

They were responding to a query from Louth County Council councillors who requested that Louth County Council write a letter to revenue to establish if the initiative of marking diesel was proving an effective tool against illegal activity with regards to fuel.

In reply to the letter Revenue insisted that they are winning the war on fuel laundering, pointing out that the number of illicit mineral oil seizures have been greatly reduced in recent years. According to their figures 125,000 litres of illegal oil was seized in 2017 compared to a high of 914,000 in 2012.

“In recent years Revenue has implemented a comprehensive strategy to tackle fuel fraud and intensified enforcement against suspected fuel laundering operations on both sides of the border.

All the indications are that the introduction of the marker, together with the wide range of other measures taken to prevent and combat fraud, has had a major impact on the illicit fuel trade.

“Although the available evidence to date indicated that the Accutrace cannot be laundered by conventional methods, we remain vigilant. While we welcome the effectiveness of the measures introduced over the last few years and the very positive outcome of the collaboration with the HMRC, we are alert to the resourcefulness of those involved in criminality in the fuel trade. We recognise the serious threat that fuel trade poses to legitimate business, consumer and the Exchequer. Tackling this criminal activity has been and remains a high priority for Revenue,” concluded the letter.

A Triduum in honour of St Brigid will take place at St Brigid’s Shrine, Faughart, from Wednesday January 30 to Friday February 1.

On St Brigid’s Day Mass and blessing will be celebrated by Fr Garrett Campbell at 11am while the Candlelight Procession from Faughart Graveyard to the Shrine will commence at 8pm.

Man given chance to avoid jail A man who pleaded guilty to driving without insurance was given the chance to avoid jail after his case was adjourned for a Community Service Report.

and it was stated that he was disqualified at the time.

Solicitor Frank McDonnell stated that the defendant was the sole carer of his two children aged four and five and is currently unemployed. He stated that he bought the car for €200 and that there was no accident, while he was also fully co-operative with Gardai.

He added that Mr McDonagh does not drink or take drugs and asked the court to consider Community Service.

Judge John Cheatle adjourned the case to March 6 for a Community Service Report and said he would consider 120 hours in lieu of four months. He also disqualified Mr McDonagh from driving for six years.

Young Irelands hopes of All-Ireland glory dashed Young Irelands hopes of AllIreland glory were dashed on Sunday afternoon when they lost narrowly to Beaufort of Kerry in the semi-final at Portlaoise.

Following victory in the Leinster Junior Club Championship Final before Christmas, the Dundalk club turned in another gallant display but unfortunately just fell short against the Munster champions.

The Louth men were in impressive form in the opening half and at the break had built up a 0-7 to 0-4 lead.

However, the Kerry men came back strongly in the second half and were boosted by the fact that the Young Irelands were reduced to 14 men just after the restart. Despite a brave effort from the Irelanders, it was Beaufort who emerged

with a 0-12 to 0-10 win and booked their place in the AllIreland Final in Croke Park.

Despite the defeat it was a memorable season for Young Ireland and the pride in the club is summed up by a letter submitted by one supporter.

Having being involved with Dundalk Young Irelands for over 45 years I wish to pay tribute to the management and players for the wonderful rollercoaster journey they brought us on in the past 12 months.

It was exciting, heart-stopping, full of emotions and hard to emulate. Unfortunately we came to a stop in Portlaoise when we were narrowly defeated in an All Ireland semi-final.

No amount of commenting can deny the fact that some circumstances on the day did not help our cause but we achieved a lot

for a small club.

It was humbling to witness parents, wives, girlfriends, children and supporters all waiting outside the stand to applaud and greet the squad when they emerged after the match to head home.

That gesture sums it all.

We can have no regrets as our players gave of their best and we are very proud of each and every one of them. On reflection it was a stop on one journey...we have other long tough campaigns ahead of us and I’m quite sure we have the potential to meet them with the desire and hunger we showed in 2018.

We proved a lot to ourselves and can use these experiences gained as a stepping stone in the year ahead. Young Ireland Boys Hurrah.

Emma celebrates 100 years of Dail Eireann A Second Year student from St Vincents School was one of 15 young people across Ireland who delivered presentations at the Mansion House, Dublin, as part of the Houses of the Oireachtas programme commemorating the 100th anniversary of the First Dáil.

Emma Connolly was selected as a result of a nationwide competition and the topic of her presentation was, ‘The Mental, physical and emotional health benefits of music’ which was delivered on Tuesday January 22.

The students, all aged 16 to 17, have spent many hours preparing their presentations as part of 13 TED-Ed Club lessons, formally known as explorations, under the guidance of their teachers and Parliamentary Education Officer Conor Reale.

The presentations took place in the Round Room of the Mansion House, the venue for the first public sitting of Dáil Éireann on 21 January 1919.

Following the event, the students’ presentations will be available for viewing on the TED-Ed Clubs channel on YouTube and on Oireachtas TV. Their chosen topics include the power of

democracy, the impact of social media and mobile phones, challenges in mental health services, coping with stress, sexual identity, and the relevance of education in the real world. Two speakers made their presentations in Irish.

“The calibre of the students’ presentations is simply outstanding and will be inspiring to all those who hear

them. These are brave, empathetic, intelligent and insightful young people with powerful messages,” said Ceann Comhairle Seán Ó Fearghaíl TD. “There can be no better way to commemorate the first hundred years of Dáil Éireann than to highlight voices of future leadership in our country as these students surely represent,” he concluded.

Johnny claims national title in Cork Students

Even though 2019 is so new that resolutions are still holding firm, Cuchulainn Cycling Club has crowned its first national champion of the year as Johnny McCabe returned home from Cork’s Fota Island with the National Cyclo Cross Championship title.

He travelled more in hope than expectation as his winter season had been derailed by a broken bone sustained during the summer. His lack of racing meant that he wasn’t noted as a favourite in the Masters 60 race and did not get a front row start.

However, Johnny tore into the technical course and quickly battled his way to the front of the field. Running in second place was his long time friend and training partner Eamonn McConvey from Newry who rides with McConvey Wheelers. These two had an epic battle and pulled away from the rest of the field, where Dublin’s Terence O`Neill

Two students who became involved in an incident following a pre-Christmas night out avoided convictions at Dundalk District Court.

Aaron McCambridge (20) of 18 St Brigid’s Park, Cullaville, had his case struck out after he made a contribution of €150 to the Garda Benevolent Fund, while Matthew McCreesh (20) of 43 Concession Road, Cullaville, had his case struck out after making a donation of €100 to St Vincent de Paul.

Mr McCambridge faced a public order charge after he was arrested in the early hours of December 23 at Park St. Staff in a takeaway

told Gardai that the defendant, who was highly intoxicated, had tried to damage a wall by kicking it.

Mr McCreesh was arrested on the same date after he tried to interfere with Gardai arresting his friend. He was shouting at Gardai and attempted to push forward after being told to leave the scene.

Five years ago, the Primary Care Team in Án Stáisiun Sláinte Primary Care Centre in Dundalk led by Raymond Smith, Senior Physiotherapist in Primary Care, sat down to devise ways of helping the people in Dundalk manage their health.

Many years of hard work, research, pilot programmes and dedication from the staff have resulted in the implementation of the Weight and Lifestyle Management Programme.

The programme is collaboration between health professionals from the Physiotherapy, Dietetics, Public Health Nursing and Occupational Therapy Departments and has been running successfully for the past four years. Research has shown consistently that multi-disciplinary education and exercise-based programmes have more success in achieving weight loss compared to unidisciplinary programmes, and Raymond explained how the programme works.

“The aim of the programme is to give people the tools to allow them to take control of their health and wellbeing. The programme has three compo-

nents: periodic assessments carried out by members of the team: a six-week education programme lasting two hours per week covering topics such as; making healthy food choices, benefits of exercise including promotion of the national guidelines on exercise, adverse health effects of being overweight and an exercise programme developed and supervised by physiotherapists once per week which the clients are encouraged to attend.”

“Participants must make initial contact as we only take self referral after which a client information leaflet outlining the design of the programme is sent to them.

A few weeks before the programme starts a letter is sent inviting them to contact the health centre and make an

appointment for a pre assessment. At the pre assessment they meet the physiotherapist who measures fitness, the dietician who measures BMI and sets target weight loss goals and the public health nurse who measures blood sugar levels, motivation levels and blood pressure.

Thus before the participants attend the information sessions they are well aware of what is involved and the commitment needed from them before they can start making that change,” he continued.

“The programme is run four times yearly to coincide with the school term and takes place in the morning. We facilitate a maximum of 35 people per class.

The programme is targeted at people who are overweight, feel unfit and are motivated to make long term changes to their lifestyle. The first programme started in September 2013 when 15 clients attended. Since then a further nine programmes with over 300 clients attending have been commenced with the most recent starting in April. Results to date have been positive with many who complete the programme achieving their goals of between 5% and 10% weight loss and an improvement in their physical fitness.”

Participants in senior alert scheme on the rise

The number of participants in the Seniors Alert Scheme in County Louth has increased by 32% according to the most recent figures for the last year, according to Fine Gael TD, Fergus O’Dowd.

Figures to the end of October show that 943 people in Louth were registered participants on the scheme compared to 712 participants at the same stage of 2017. This is an increase of 231 on last year.

Commenting on the figures

O’Dowd said: “The Senior Alerts Scheme supports vulnerable older people in our communities by providing them with a free monitored alarm which they wear on their person and which they can activate if they need assistance.

This community led scheme enables people over 65 to live securely in their homes with confidence, independence and peace of mind.

A man who was convicted of driving while under the influence of an intoxicant was given a four-month suspended sentence at Dundalk District Court.

Christopher Traynor (30) of 32 Pinewood Grove, Bay Estate, Dundalk, failed in a bid to have the case against him struck out after solicitor Conor MacGuill argued that his client had initially been processed as a drink driver before it came to light that he was driving under the influence of an intoxicant.

The court heard that on February 13 last year at 10.10am Gardai had been alerted to the possibility of a drink driver when Mr Traynor was observed driving at Pinewood Grove, Bay Estate.

He attempted to overtake a van before pulling back in and then almost collided with a car after taking a left turn.

When Gardai signalled for him to stop he got out of his car in an aggressive and agitated manner. The investigating Garda formed the opinion that he was over the limit and arrested Mr Traynor.

A urine test revealed that the defendant had zero alcohol in his system but it was stated that the presence of opiates was detected.

Judge John Cheatle rejected the application to dismiss the case and stated that the Garda had correctly formed her opinion and that she had given an accurate account of Mr Traynor’s driving. As a result he convicted

on both dangerous driving and driving under the influence of an intoxicant.

The court heard that the defendant had 23 previous convictions including one for drink driving in 2015 when he had been given a 10-year disqualification.

Mr MacGuill stated that this ban had been reduced and pointed out that his client was a father of one who was in a steady relationship. He is currently on a methadone programme and has been managing his addiction.

Local scout group travel to Switzerland Dog Rescue premises on course to open by the end of the year

A group of local Venturer (15-17 yrs) and Rover scouts (18-25 yrs) rang in the New Year in style as they travelled to Kandersteg International Scout Centre located in the Bernese Alps in Switzerland.

The 23 strong group travelled out on December 29 and spent a week doing various winter activities.

Their first day saw them doing a Winter Survival experience, which saw some new skills being learned. The group started off with a hike using snow-shoes which took a little getting used to. Along the hike, they learned survival skills such as avalanche training, including how to locate people trapped under snow using specialised equipment; shelter building, including the importance of snow as an insulator; first aid skills; fire lighting in the snow; and the importance of teamwork. They then hiked up to the Hoh viewpoint which gave some amazing views over the village of Kandersteg.

The next day saw another early start as the Group donned all the necessary equipment to go hiking and sledding in the Alps.

Dundalk Dog Rescue have issued an update for their new rescue centre which they are determined to open by the end of the year.

According to Kelly Tether from the Dundalk Dog Rescue group the project has come up against many unforeseen problems thus far but are now ready to start building onsite in Dromiskin where they will initially build 45 kennels with living accommodation.

“Firstly thank you for all you have done to help us this past year and what a year 2018 was, not only manic busy behind the scenes with our regular rescue but knee deep in bureaucracy, fundraising and new designs with planning, “Bearing in mind we are all volunteers with full time work on top of our many weekly hours with DDR,” explained Kelly.

“We started out last

year as we are this year with a planning application for our new centre about to be finalised with Louth County Council. After receiving Full Planning Permission last year we had to revise our plans due to so many reasons, not just the cost.

“The financials on our original design skyrocketed with so many unforeseen problems which only became more apparent as we commenced our site works.

“Our original plans would take us another couple of years fundraising and we’re not prepared to wait another year for our centre, so with new plans designed and now fully costed we are about to get very busy onsite.

“We will still have 45+ kennels with living accommodation and have a design where we can expand quickly when needed.

“The costs including vat will be in the region of €60,000 to complete our build. Fundraising to date is close to €180,000. We also have a mortgage offer of €100,000, which of course we don’t want to draw down only as a last resort. We have ongoing talks with a large, dog affiliated corporate company that will be donating to us, amount of donation to be hammered out.

“We will also be approaching a number of large local companies to help us finalise our funding.

“By hook or by crook we will have our centre open this year and have a home, hopefully temporary to the many wee dogs needing our help.

“We could do none of this without you, so thank you from the bottom of our hearts for all you’ve done in the name of Dog Rescue, stated Kelly.

Blackrock Tidy Towns Christmas Tree Shredding Initiative 2019

Another successful Blackrock Tidy Towns event was held on Saturday January 12, when a new record of 241 Christmas trees were shredded and mulched.

As with previous years Tidy Towns worked with local project partner Pelican Promotions, and benefited from using the excellent facilities of the Community Centre on Sandy Lane.

The resultant mulch from the 241 trees will be well used as some participants on the day took some mulch home A full trailer load of mulch went to the stables in council’s animal compound in

Dromiskin.

This mulch, when composted down with manure, will later be taken to the park for use, effectively double recycling of the Christmas trees.

The majority of the load went directly to the Blackrock Park for use in the woodland paths and mulching of the orchard trees.

Blackrock Tidy Towns are proud of this initiative which has yielded the following results: Over the three years running this event, 703 trees were returned to the land, not landfill.

By avoiding journeys to nearest recycling centre, 13,184 kms

of travel saved (based on19 km return journey to Dundalk Recycling Centre per tree) – representing 2.6 tonnes of CO2.

The awareness raised from the event to promote all manner of recycling and re-use was invaluable, especially amongst the younger members of the community.

The resultant mulch as used almost ‘on-site’, with the park located next door.

Overall the community element was excellent, with local organisations and local business working with the community, and providing a very useful service that was also environmentally sound.

1 IN 4 MOTORISTS REPORT HAVING CARS VANDALISED

Almost a quarter of Irish motorists have founds signs that their car had been tampered with or vandalised in the past, a recent study

has found.

The survey, undertaken by AA Ireland, found that 25.93% of respondents had noticed signs that their

DROP IN INSURANCE PRICES IN 2018 A recent survey by AA Ireland found that 1 in 3 drivers saw their premiums decrease in 2018. The study of over 5,000 showed that 17.52% of respondents ‘strongly agreed’ that their 2018 premium was lower than it had been the year prior; 13.84% ‘somewhat agreed’ with this statement.

At the other end of the scale, over 17% said they had considered giving up the car altogether because of the problem of high prices.

January is one of the busiest months of the year for Motor Insurance renewals because of the historical pattern of when cars were first purchased. The AA is reminding motorists to look for good value and is warning that the ongoing crisis of sky-high premiums has not gone away.

“Insurance costs have been the major consumer issue for drivers over the last few years.”

Says Director of Consumer Affairs Conor Faughnan. “We have got used to high prices but that does not make them acceptable.

Some categories of driver have seen prices fall a bit but there are plenty of people for whom the problem is as bad as ever. Young drivers, returning emigrants and those unlucky enough to have a claim are facing another year of brutal costs.”
