Distillery to open in New Year

The Great Northern Distillery will be up and running by January according to the man who bought the brewery from Diageo last year.

Entrepreneur John Teeling reached agreement with Diageo to buy the Great Northern Brewery site in Dundalk last year and indicated he would spend €35m over four years to transform the brewery into one of the biggest whiskey distilleries in Ireland.

Teeling made headlines in 2011 when it was announced he would sell his Cooley Distillery to American giants Jim Beam inc for €71m. The businessman couldn’t resist getting back into the distilling game and it is full steam ahead for the venture which will be fully operational early next year.

Great Northern Distillery will open next year

The Great Northern Distillery will be up and running by January according to the man who bought the brewery from Diageo last year.

Entrepreneur John Teeling reached agreement with Diageo to buy the Great Northern Brewery site in Dundalk last year and indicated he

would spend €35m over four years to transform the brewery into one of the biggest whiskey distilleries in Ireland.

Teeling made headlines in 2011 when it was announced he would sell his Cooley Distillery to American giants Jim Beam inc for €71m.

With the whiskey market growing year on year the Dublin-born businessman couldn’t resist getting back into the distilling game and according to the man himself it is full steam ahead for the venture which will be fully operational early next year.

“We should have the construction side of things fully completed

by December so we are making great progress and I would imagine we will be up and running come January 2015. We

have the benefit of Dundalk’s existing brewery facilities that included three beautiful copper kettles which we will adapt into pot stills.

That means we’re able to build both a grain and pot still distillery in the same still room. Our full capacity will be three million cases so it is going to be a pretty big operation”, explained John.

“The plan is to work 24 hours a day Monday to Friday and we will have between 25 and 30 working for us on site.

What we produce will almost entirely be sold to third parties. We plan to distil grain whiskeys, pot still whiskeys and single malts for national and international markets”, he added.

purchased the entire 13 acre site he will only be using half of it for his operations and has already leased out 6.8 acres to Cellulac who will create 30 new jobs in Dundalk for the sustainable production of lactic acid from second generation (2G) feedstocks.

According to John he is keen to make use of the wonderful old style buildings and is still trying to figure out how to make best use of the red building at the front of the site which contains offices.

“We haven’t ruled out building a visitor centre or something like that but first things first we want to get the distillery up and running and become an efficient low cost top quality operation”, concluded John.

Organisers for this year’s Relay for Life in Dundalk have made one last call for all survivors of cancer to join this 24 hour fundraising event.

Now in it’s sixth year, the hugely popular annual event begins life in its new surroundings having secured Dundalk Stadium as a venue for the event which takes place on October 26 and 27.

Having already raised €350,000 for the Irish Cancer Society organisers have urged the Dundalk public to help make this year’s event the best yet.

According to committee member Damien Higgins the committee is very happy with this year’s venue.

“We are delighted that the relay is in Dundalk Stadium and this event is here to stay in Dundalk

have really supported us over the years and hopefully that will be the case again this time around.

We will have plenty of stuff going on in the stadium to entertain people with live music, stalls and lots of fun stuff for the kids.

“In keeping with the relay philosophy of raising awareness, survivors of cancer will walk the opening lap of the relay at 3pm on Sunday 27”, revealed Damien.

Dundalk traders have called on Louth County Council to end any confusion with regards to the new taxi ranks in Park St. At a meeting of Dundalk traders in the County museum last Thursday evening many traders felt that the signage indicating what time the taxi ranks were in use were not adequate. According to Jimmy Cumiskey the traders were generally not against the ideas of having night time ranks but were worried customers may not realise that these ranks are only in use between 10pm and 6am.

“We had a very well attended meeting last Thursday including councillors Maria Doyle and Conor Keelan who were there to

listen to the traders issues. We had two items on the agenda which were the recently installed night time taxi ranks in Park Street and also the installation of Christmas lights in Park St, Earl St and Clanbrassil S”, explained Jimmy.

“On the issue of taxi ranks the main gripe with traders in Park St was the inadequacies of the signage on display. Many felt that the fact the rank is only open to taxis between the hours of 10pm and 6am was not made clear enough and people were afraid to stop and park during the day in fear of getting a ticket.

Obviously this will have an effect on trade on Park St, so it was suggested that better more clear signage was erected to make it clear that parking on Park St is as it always was up until 10pm in the

evening”, added Jimmy.

“Both Maria and Conor indicated that they would take this issue back to the council and see what could be done so hopefully we can come to some arrangement where better signage is installed. It was also noted that under the bye laws of the land the taxi rank can be rescinded if it is seen that taxis aren’t using the rank”, he noted.

It was also decided at the meeting that this year’s Christmas lights will be put up in the coming weeks on Park St, Earl. St and Clanbrassil St. There was also disappointment expressed that early bird tickets for this years ice skating at the Square where only available in one location and not in the town centre.

Karate club undertake fundraising venture Dundalk Karate Club are undertaking a major sponsorship event in an effort to provide each member and volunteer with a uniform as well as helping sponsor members who have been selected to represent Ireland at an International Competition in Birmingham next year.

With this in mind, Head of Dundalk Karate, Sensei Mary Marcus, in conjunction with Dundalk Stadium are holding a Night at the Races November 22, and with Dundalgan Press (W. Tempest Ltd), having sponsored the tickets for this event, the ball is now rolling on this fundraising exercise for Dundalk Karate.

in Brief Broke Red Light

A man from Newry who admitted driving through a red light before overtaking two vehicles was fined €400 at Dundalk District Court. Mark McAleavey of 50 Clanrye Avenue, Newry, was observed by Gardai breaking the lights at Church St on October 2 this year. Evidence was given that he then dangerously overtook two vehicles and was swaying from side to side on the road before being stopped and arrested. The defendant told the court that he simply followed the traffic through the lights and admitted that he shouldn’t have done it. Judge Flann Brennan accepted a plea of careless driving and imposed a €400 fine.

Bull is back on motorway Louth County Council has confirmed that An Tarbh Donn - the Táin Bull sculpture has been relocated on its original site adjacent to the M1 north of Dundalk.

The sculpture was created by local artist Micheál McKeown of Blackrock, Dundalk who also supervised the repairs. The sculpture had been damaged following an attempt to steal the

piece in August 2013.

Staff from Louth County Council’s Infrastructure Department together with staff from the Arts Office oversaw the reinstatement which was executed from the lands adjacent to the Motorway in order not to cause disruption to Motorway traffic.

The return of An Tarbh Donn has been welcomed by the Cathaoirleach of Louth County

Council Councillor Oliver Tully who, in thanking the staff for their work on this project, spoke of the importance of Public Art that was placed for all to enjoy.

He looked forward to the users of the M1 enjoying An Tarbh Donn for many years to come and expected its reappearance will be welcomed by many of those travelling on this stretch of road.

Eight more cattle stolen in the county Eight cattle were stolen from land at Allardstown near Knockbridge on Tuesday October 7 or in the early hours of Wednesday.

The cattle were stolen from farmer Aidan McDonnell from Knockbridge with four of the cattle stolen only bought in Carnaross mart the day before and cost €1300 each. The remaining four were under 30 months and were due to go to the factory that week. They were worth about €1700 each.

It would not have been easy to load them where they were being kept; five other cattle were found a few fields away which escaped from the rustlers.”

Louth IFA Co Chairman Matthew McGreehan voiced his

concern about this incident and called on farmers to be vigilant.

“This is a huge loss to the farmer and is the second time in four months that cattle had been stolen in Co Louth. The other happened in June in Ravensdale.

“We are calling on everyone in rural areas to be extremely vigilant. If they see any suspicious lorries, jeeps and trailers in the area to write down the number and description and report to the Gardaí and notify the farmer also.

Fine Gael Senator for Louth, Jim D’Arcy, has been appointed to the Ad Hoc Committee of the Council of Europe, of which he is a member, for the observation of the legislative elections in Ukraine, which take place on Sunday October 26.

“I will be based in Kharkov, which is the second largest city in Ukraine and which is on the Ukrainian/Russian Border. There was an uprising when separatists took over government buildings.

However, Ukrainian security forces were able to quell the uprising and order was restored in September and it is peaceful at the moment.

Senator D’Arcy has experience of being an observer as he was in Turkey in August observing the Presidential Elections there on a joint Council of Europe/ OSCE mission.

“It is very important to promote and stand up for the function of the Council of Europe which is to promote democracy, human rights and the rule of law. These are crucially important elections for Ukraine which will define the country into the future and hopefully end the strife that is there at present.

Senator D’Arcy will fly to Kiev on Thursday October 23 and will be briefed over the following two days and meet representatives of the political parties, the media and civil society, before taking a nine hour train journey to Kharkov in the east of the country. He will spend Sunday October 26 observing the elections in the company of an interpreter, before flying back to Kiev on Monday October 27 to make his report.

Teen warned over the company he was keeping Two men who had too much to drink were causing such a nuisance to residents in the early hours of the morning that one man had to be escorted past them when Gardai arrived.

As a result, Dillon McCabe of 65 Willowdale, Bay Estate, Dundalk, and Darren Brady of 142 Cedarwood Park, Dundalk, pleaded guilty to public order offences at Dundalk District Court.

Insp Yvonne Murphy stated that at 2.25am on September 29 the men were found loitering and shouting obscenities at Ashling Park. They had a lot of

alcohol and were told to stop but continued to be very aggressive.

One man had to be escorted past them.

Solicitor for Mr McCabe, Sean T O’Reilly, stated that his client wanted to hold up his hands in relation to the matter and move on. He said the 18-year-old had too much to drink on the occasion and he was deeply apologetic.

Mr Brady’s solicitor, Conor MacGuill, said that his client also had too much to drink and that he apologised. Although his 28-year-old client, who is now studying for his Junior Cer-

tificate, had 26 previous convictions, he asked the court to view this as a blip.

In relation to Mr Brady, Judge Flann Brennan imposed a €200 but applied the Probation Act in the case of Mr McCabe who had no previous convictions, but warned him to be careful in the future.

“The moral to this story is that you would want to be careful what you get up to particularly if you are hanging around with someone ten years older who has 26 previous convictions”, he stated.

A leader from Cooley Youth Club was presented with an award at Youth Work Ireland Volunteer Achievement Awards 2014 held in Dublin Castle on Saturday.

RCNE seek volunteers DUE to the increase in the demand for their services, Rape Crisis North East are urgently seeking experienced volunteer counsellors to provide a crisis counselling and psychotherapy service to male and female clients, who have experienced recent or past rape, sexual assault and/or childhood sexual abuse.

counsellors to have a professional counselling/psychotherapy qualification; are fully accredited or are working towards accreditation with IACP, BACP or equivalent.

It is also essential for the counsellor to have completed the 12 day Post Graduate Certificate Course – ‘Issues of Sexual Violence: the Counselling Process’ with the Dublin Rape Crisis Centre.

RCNE understands that free time is precious to all and appreciate any time you can offer to assist them in supporting those impacted by sexual violence.

Fundraiser dedicated to Sandra’s memory

A fundraiser in memory of Sandra Hickey who passed away from cancer in July will take place on October 26 in Oriel Active with all proceeds going to the local hospice and palliative care team.

Sandra’s sister Caitriona McArdle is organising the event which takes place just two days before what would have been Sandra’s birthday.

According to Caitriona the event is both to commemorate her beloved sister as well as raising money for the hospice and palliative care team who she says were a huge help to her sister and family during Sandra’s illness.

and palliative team were absolutely brilliant to us all during Sandra’s illness and I just wanted to give a little bit back to them by raising a few euro while at the same time celebrating Sandra’s life. The fundraiser is in memory of Sandra who recently passed away on July 28 and we’ll be having a 5k walk followed by a

balloon release with tea, sandwiches and a raffle afterwards”, explained Caitriona.

“We are having it on Sunday October 26 at 2pm in Oriel Active and everybody is welcome to come along and lend their support to the event. Sandra was very popular around town and I thought it would be nice to do something in

her memory especially as it would have been her birthday two days after this fundraiser.

People have been very good offering to help out and donating prizes for the raffle and all we need now is for people to show up and help us raise a few euro for the hospice”, she added.

Anybody interested in supporting Caitriona’s fundraiser can do so by paying €10 on the day.

Good weekend for rugby club

The Dundalk RFC U-11 squad who made a successful trip to Dublin

Dundalk U14s made the long trip to Birr on Saturday morning for their second game of the season in the Leinster league and they came home with an impressive 14-0 win.

Dean Conway opened the scoring with a try which was converted by Leon Keegan, and late in the game they sealed victory thanks to a Neil Thornton try which was converted by Cathal Purcell.

All involved with the squad wish a speedy recovery to captain Tom Hanratty who suffered a leg injury in the first half.

Dundalk U-11 Sharks continued their excellent start to the season with a terrific performance against Wanderers and Bective in Merrion Road.

Match 1 included a wonderful performance from Ethan Gilligan in his first ever match, dogged defending from the likes of Ronan McDonnell, Joseph Pheifer, Robert Malone, Liam Dorian, and sublime passing and running from Sam Malone, Conal O’Callaghan, James O’Connor and Eoghan Staunton. Tries for Dundalk were from Joseph Pheifer and James O’Connor.

Match 2 against Wanderers saw good rugby from Lorcan Rice, Alex Gregory, Milo Moore and Calum Grant. Tries for Dundalk came from Sam Malone, a fantastic solo effort from Conal O’Callaghan and Eoghan Staunton.

The U-12s were at home this week an fielded three teams against the opposition from

Greystones and Ardee . Dundalk won three of four of their matches played against a strong Greystones side. Dundalk never gave up and were rewarded on the day with tries from Aodhan FItzpatrick, Lee O’Carroll, Josh O’Hare, Jake Mc Namara, James Toal, Jack Mulroy, Adam Duffy, Michael Murtha , Sam Dawson and Jack Caroll.

Dundalk U10 Sharks officially kicked off their season when they welcomed Naas to the Rugby Club on Saturday morning.

The Black Sharks kicked their first match off in rip-roaring fashion with some fantastic direct running from Cian McGuiness and Ewan Kelly. Naas were met with some ferocious tackling from Jacob Dunlevy, Oran Rafferty and Max Valentine. The Sharks continued their fine start with Luke O’Connell and Oisin McBride scoring some brilliant individual tries.

The second match

was a closer affair with Naas upping their game.

Unfortunately for them, Adam McCoy, Calum McDowell and David Coyle were in no mood to give up easy tries and repelled countless attacks. Eoin Purton and Donal Lavery were very disruptive at the breakdown with Liam O Connor and Fionn Connolly reaping the benefits by notching some super scores.

The White Sharks saw Rory Wallace and Michael Carroll impressed, while Conor Whyte and Iarlaith Connolly continued the momentum with some very positive runs which led to some magnificent scores for Eamon Donnelly, Enda Dooley and Darragh Collier.

In the second game Shaun Paul Shannon and Will Smith crossed for a try apiece. Naas could not get a foothold in the match partly due to the aggressive rucking of Ryan Martin and Calum Lambe. Try of the match came from Ben Cahill.

The Hospitality Department at DKIT welcomed back students this week fresh from their Internship with The Gleneagles Hotel, the home of The Ryder Cup 2014.

It was a very exciting time to be connected with The Gleneagles which was portrayed by the wonderful media coverage of The Ryder Cup hosted by them at the end of September.

To be in the vicinity of such a large scale global event is a magnificent coup for the students and the Institute alike. This continues and builds on the relationship that exists between the Institute

and The Gleneagles Resort for the past few years and the relationship and reputation that the students have fostered whilst there.

This worldwide event rounded off a very worthwhile eightmonth placement for five of the BA Event Management and BA Hospitality Management students Amy Connolly, Richard Stephens (Hospitality Management) and Robert Tiernan, Shauna Dignan and Jamie Whyte (Event Management) who were successful in securing their internship at this prestigious property.

In addition to developing and

refining new skills the lucky five were also fortunate enough to meet and look after some wellknown names.

Amy summed up her Gleneagles experience by revealing that she had gained a lot from her time there.

“My time in Gleneagles was an amazing and memorable experience. I have learnt so much and met some amazing people along the way. I have improved my skills and also served some well known people. For me Gleneagles is such a beautiful establishment, were wonderful memories can be made”, she stated.

Drugs meeting re-scheduled

The drugs awareness meeting for the Cooley Peninsula which was postponed earlier this month has been rescheduled for Wednesday October 22.

The initial event on October 1 was postponed as a mark of respect following a tragedy in the area, and will now take place in Mullaghbuou Community Centre at 8pm.

Speakers on the night will include Derek Russell from Roscrea County Tipperary, whose community also made a stand against drug pushers. Nora O’Donaghy from Turas Counselling Services, Dundalk, will also speak on drug awareness, and give advice to parents on what to look for if they think their child is taking drugs. She will also discuss the devastation caused by drugs, and what to do if somebody is pushing drugs on your child or you.

Sergant Eugene Collins, from Dundalk Garda Station, will give a presentation of the different type of drugs which are been pushed on to our young people and will also discuss the problem of anti-social behaviour.

Eugene will discuss the different means of how to contact the authorities in confidence in relation to these matters.

This meeting has been initiated by the community and all organisations in the Peninsula are invited to attend this meeting. It is very important that local people and organisations do attend to show their support for their community.

The objective of this meeting is to try and find out as a community how to deal with drugs and drug pushers in the Peninsula. The community feel it is time that we stand up as a collective against these pushers who are ruining lives, ruining families and stealing the life out of drug victims.

Dunleer coffee morning Dundalk Leader 22nd October 2014

Mná na Geataí fundraising Committee held a coffee morning in the Market house in Dunleer in aid of the Gary Kelly Centre in Drogheda on Saturday October 11.

The coffee morning saw the whole community of Dunleer coming together to support the Mná while also helping a worthy cause. Throughout the day there was live music played by musicians from all over Louth and because it was such a sunny day the musicians played outside for the whole Main Street to enjoy. It was a fun filled family day with face painting and a family orientated raffle with some excellent prizes.

Mná Na Geataí came about after a group of women met at the school gates while their children were at school. The group originally were a social group but when a member fell ill the women decided that the

Pulled out of traffic at checkpoint A man who came to the attention of Gardai after he pulled out of traffic coming up to a checkpoint, was banned from driving for three years after he was over the limit for driving.

bridge, Dundalk, who admitted the offence at Ballinlough, Knockbridge, on August 17, 2012, was also fined €350 at Dundalk District Court.

Insp Yvonne Murphy told the court that on that date, the defendant was observed pulling out of a line of traffic

at a checkpoint and pulling in. After failing a roadside breath test he was taken to Dundalk Garda Station and a sample taken showed he was over the legal limit for driving.

The defendant’s solicitor, stated that the 48-year-old

unemployed man is suffering from an ongoing serious illness and had suffered the bereavement of both parents around that time.

In convicting, Judge Flann Brennan postponed the disqualification to January 1.

The ever-popular Halloween extravaganza at Fitzpatrick’s continues this year in an effort to raise funds for Temple Street Children’s Hospital and the Children’s Respite Centre in Lordship.

Fitzpatricks have worked tirelessly for the past six week getting the event ready with their own creative designs and ideas.

Last year the event raised a fantastic €7000 for The Temple Street Children’s Hospital ‘Trick or Treat Campaign’ to help fund essential facilities and life-saving equipment for some of the country’s sickest children.

Funds raised at cupcake sale

Staff in Permanent TSB continue to keep the memory of their former colleague Linda McDonnell alive thanks to their annual cupcake sale.

Clare Murrihy, Debbie Farrell, Angela Kerrigan, Yvonne Harvey and Joanne Black were in full on baking mode last Thursday evening making hundreds of cupcakes between them to be sold in the Permanent TSB branch on Clanbrassil St. last Friday.

Tolani Animasahun: It’s going to be a nerve-wracking experience and I think it might even go down to the very last kick of the game but I’m a Dundalk fan and I have to believe that they will be beat Cork on Friday.

I have a feeling they will beat Cork. There will obviously be a few nerves on the pitch and in the crowd but I think they’ll have just enough to get the job done. I’m going to the game and really looking forward to it.

Yes. They are the best team in Ireland and I think they can finish the job against Cork on Friday. They are all really good players.

I think they’ll win 2-0. Friday evening against Bray wasn’t great but you have to take the weather into account.

How can anybody play their normal game in those conditions. I have no doubt they’ll do it.

Old Dundalk Society Historical Lecture The Old Dundalk Society, as part of it’s ongoing Golden Jubilee celebrations will host a lecture entitled ‘History of the Redemptorist order in Dundalk’ in St Gerard’s centre, St Joseph’s Parish, Dundalk on Tuesday 28th October commencing at 8pm.

Redemptorist priest who has been in the order for many years. Fr Clement lived and grew up in St Alphonsus Villas, a few hundred yards from the Monastery. The first Redemptorist mission house in Dundalk which was officially opened on the 8th September 1876 and was situated in Park St. on a site formally used by

Dunnes Stores.

The present beautiful Romanesque Church was built by a local contractor, James McAdorey and was officially opened in August 1892. The lecture will be of interest to many Dundalk people and should be of special interest to those who worship at the Redemptorist. All welcome.

Tree-planting raises OCD awareness

Benedicata McArdle from Louth County Council is pictured with Simon Tierney as part of the ‘Plant a Tree for OCD’ initiative which took place across the country between October 11 and 18.

This project aimed to raise awareness of the mental health illness of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder.

Simon Tierney, a recovered OCD sufferer, travelled the country in an effort to create an open dialogue about mental health and specifically that of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder.

The tree was planted in Ice Hosue Hill on Thursday October 16.

OCD Ireland is an organisation that hosts free weekly support groups for sufferers. Information is available at ocdireland.org.

Louth Meath Education and Training Board are working with the Francis Ledwidge Museum to develop a LMETB Poetry Award named after the great poet from Slane Co Meath.

Elma McMahon, Youth Officer with LMETB met with Rosemarie Yore of the Francis Ledwidge Museum recently to work out the details that such an award may entail. Elma says ‘I was welcomed to the museum by Rosemary and Paul Mongey and given an interesting guided tour’.

Frank Smith, Finance Officer with LMETB attended the Francis Ledwidge Museum AGM in Slane recently and gave an interesting presen-

tation to all in attendance on LMETB, their schools and centres and their ideas for the Poetry Award. This presentation was very well received. He spoke about Louth Meath Education and Training Board and their ideas for the Poetry Award.

LMETB have 18 schools across Louth and Meath and it is envisioned that there would be a Junior and Senior Award with the overall winner getting the beautiful Francis Ledwidge Trophy. Details of the competition will be distributed to all schools and centres within the LMETB family which have over 11000 students and is the primary educator across Meath and Louth

Dunleer Tidy Towns Awards 2014

Dunleer Tidy Towns will host its second Awards Night in the Grove House Dunleer on Thursday October 30 at 8pm. There will be more than 15 awards handed out on the night. They include three prizes in small garden category and three prizes in the large Garden Award. There are some special awards for artistic gardens which were very well presented and other special awards on the night.

There will be an overall winner in the competition which was judged by an external judge as were all the gardens involved. There have been four nominations for the best shop front award on the occasion.

A Slide shows of all gardens the town and estates will be shown on the night and the years progress to date in developing the town along with the National Tidy Towns Report .

The Tidy Towns under chairman Hugh Callaghan will launch its new logo which was designed as a result of an art competition in 2012 in Scoil Bhride Dunleer. A large wall mounted plague with the New logo will be presented to the school for display in the school after the presentation. The winner of the competition was Meggan McCullough but elements of the three winners were used in the design.

The proceedings will start sharp at 8pm and presentations will be made by the committee which includes Hugh Callaghan as chairman, Pat Roche Secretary, Kyran McGrory Treasurer and on committee Nola Pluck and Brian Warren.

Ardee Senior Band impress in championships The 46 strong Ardee Concert Senior Band travelled to Armagh on Saturday October 11 to take part in the North of Ireland Band Association Championships in the Market Place Theatre, Armagh.

The Senior Band took to the stage under the baton of their Musical Director

Brendan Breslin, where their 46 members competed in the Championship Concert section. This was the first competition of this level for seven members who recently joined the Senior Band in September from the Youth Band.

by Peter Graham, a specially commissioned piece for the Band of the Cold stream Guards, London “The Lost Cord” composed by Arthur Sullivan, was Ardee’s second and Final Piece of the day with Nicky Callan taking the Cornet Solo.

Ardee Concert Band were rewarded for the fine performance by finishing second to Dublin Concert Band.

All lessons have now resumed and are well underway into their new term with their tutors. Most of the band’s learners are taught on a volunteer basis by members of the senior band. The band has put a huge emphasis on growth and progression within the band because of their incredible 140 youth presence in the organisation.

This approach is started from the

teachings at recorder level, with the progression being the member’s journey moving up through the various bands in this fantastic community organisation, in order to get to the penultimate position of a seat in the award-winning youth and senior bands.

The new Recorder group of 25 new boys and girls join the Ardee Concert Band Recorder Group with Sarah Clare and Darren Kirk at the helm. Sarah and Darren are no strangers to teaching the recorder as they are in their third year teaching the groups and both are members of the award winning Senior Band as well as being dedicated to their 6th Year Studies.

They are now working towards their first performance at the band’s annual Christmas Concert.

TLT hosts opera A ward - winning opera producer Ellen Kent is determined to see opera triumph over war as she brings Eastern Europe talent to the local stage with a stunning performance of Madama Butterfly.

During preparations for the show which visits The TLT Concert Hall and Theatre in Drogheda on October 24with the Ukrainian National Opera in Kharkiv, Ellen was caught just six miles from a very bloody civil war. Warned by the British Foreign Office not to travel due to fatalities, bombings and kidnappings, Ellen still managed to transport the complete sets, props and costumes out of the area.

Focusing on overcoming the difficulties of the conflict, Ellen has brought together a new company including Ukrainians, Moldovans and Russians, working together in harmony.

in Brief DLS Class Of 1989

The De La Salle Class of 1989, 25-year reunion will take place in the Lilywhites Lounge, Oriel Park on Saturday November 22 at 8pm. One of the event’s organisers, Ross McEnteggart, has called on all students from that year to make an effort to turn up, and also to spread the word to their classmates who may not be aware of the reunion.

Active Retirement The next outing for Dundalk Active Retirement Association will be to Malahide Castle and Gardens on Saturday 25th October.

Some time will also be spent in Dublin. It should be a very enjoyable day.

Positive Mental Health Week The Dundalk Positive Mental Health Committee would like to thank everyone who attended the events over the course of last week’s second Annual Dundalk Mental Health Week.

Senator Mary Moran outlined a number of events that took place and helped make it a successful week.

“We were delighted to welcome Conor Cusack to Dundalk on Tuesday to launch the art exhibition and speak at our public conference where he gave a moving and insightful account of his own journey. Dr Lisa Butterly also contributed to the public conference on Tuesday with her excellent presentation on her own personal mental health journey.

“An information stand was placed in the Marshes Shopping Centre and we were delighted with the number of people who availed of the provided information and green ribbons

to show their support”, added Mary.

“The art exhibition was in place throughout the week and the submissions this year were again of a very high quality, while the

screening of Mrs Doubtfire on Thursday last was also a great success with many people coming out to enjoy this family friendly event.

“During the lead up and during Mental

Health Week we were fortunate to have many people, groups and organisations lend their assistance to help make the events of Mental Health Week possible”, added Mary.

Advancing the Kingdom Conference The three day annual Advancing the Kingdom Conference by Redeemed Christian Church of God, Dundalk was held October 10 to 12.

The purpose of this year’s conference themed ‘Holy

Spirit; filled and Overflowing’, according to the senior pastor of the church, Pastor Alexander Alajiki was to bring people back to the importance of the Holy Spirit in their individual lives and the church as a body.

“The ineffectiveness of some churches today can be traced back to the neglect of the Holy Spirit in the lives of the believers and in the operation of the churches. The primary purpose of the Holy Spirit is to make us effective

in our testimony and service to the Lord”, he stated.

The conference witnessed a life transforming experience to the participants.

There were in total about 350 participants at the three days conference.

St Patrick’s Scout Group Anniversary A Dundalk Scout group has called on former members to ‘be prepared’ for a reunion as they celebrate their 60th anniversary.

St Patrick’s Scout Group 1st/2nd/5th Louth will celebrate their Diamond anniversary on Friday November 7 in the Ballymascanlon House Hotel at 7pm for a night of food, drink, dancing and maybe even some scouting activities for the night that is in it.

Current group leader Michelle Boyle is looking for members, volunteers or anybody who has had any involvement with St Patricks Scout Group over the past 60 years to get in touch and help mark the occasion.

“We’ve never really had an anniversary dinner for the scout group over the years so we decided it was about time we organised something and tried to get as many people as possible to come along and have a reunion of sorts to celebrate our 60th anniversary”, explained Michelle.

“Countless people have enjoyed the experience of scouting in St Patrick’s over the years and we know there are hundreds of people out there who probably don’t know anything about this anniversary. Our job now is to try and get in contact with as many of them as possible and help spread the word so they can come along and help us have a great night on November 7 in the Ballymac. We will have dinner, dancing drink and we even plan to test former scouts knowledge with a few scout related activities on the evening”, she added.

NEW RENAULT ESPACe Renault have unveiled the brand new Espace at the recent Paris Motor Show. The fifth-gen Espace borrows a sizable amount of design cues from the Initiale Paris concept that was presented last year at the Frankfurt Motor Show.

Features like a large multislat radiator grille, stylish curved side windows and an upright rear end have made the transition from concept to production, but the Espace has predictably lost the Initiale Paris' rear suicide doors.

The new Espace is up to 550 pounds lighter than the outgoing model thanks to a number of weight-saving measures inside and out.

The diet makes the Espace more nimble to drive while improving fuel economy by around 20 percent.

Inside, Renault's latest people-mover features a well-appointed, high-tech cockpit that helps it move up a notch on the market.

Upscale trim levels come with premium features such as full leather uphol-

stery, a tablet-like touch screen that runs Renault's R-Link infotainment system and real wood trim on the dashboard.

Buyers can choose whether they want five or seven seats. The secondand third-row seats can fold flat into the floor at the push of a button when not in use. Interestingly, both the five- and the seven-seater variant have the same wheelbase.

Power comes from gaso-

line- and diesel-burning four-cylinder engines whose outputs range from 130 to 200 horsepower. Entrylevel models are equipped with a six-speed manual, while more expensive variants are available with dual-clutch six-speed automatic. Front-wheel drive will be the only configuration available at launch.

After greeting show-goers in Paris, the Espace will go on sale across Europe early next year.
