Dundalk retailers are enjoying for their busiest Christmas trade since 2007 as the local economy finally springs back into life following a number of very tough years.

The shops have packed over the past number of weeks and traffic in town had been increasingly busy.

With just a couple of shopping days remaining, it is predicted that the area will get even busier as consumers continue to spend ahead of the big day.

Girls in St Vincents Secondary School received an early Christmas present when local sports star, Robert Kearney, made a surprise visit to the school on Wednesday last.

The Leinster and Ireland full-back created huge excitement amongst both students and staff as he arrived to promote the upcoming annual Fashionably Talented Show. The event which will be held in DkIT in January is organised by Transition Year students.

21-year-old Christina Kenny from the Racecourse Road in Dundalk has grown up watching her mother Alison’s health deteriorate through Cystic Fybrosis and she is frustrated and angered by the HSE’s decision not to fund ‘Orkambi’.

“I think it’s unbelievably sad and very frustrating for the Cystic Fybrosis sufferers around the country who were given hope when trials of ‘Orkambi’ were proven to be successful and were shown to work with 60% of patients.

“Unfortunately the drug would have been of

no benefit to my mother as it only treats people with a specific gene disorder but I have plenty of friends with CF who are very upset following this decision not to fund the drug”, stated Christina.

“To be clear I know it isn’t all due to the HSE that we don’t have Orkambi. Pharmaceutical companies charge disgusting prices on something that is priceless to so many people.

I am not happy with the HSE and I am most certainly disgusted with a certain pharma company. If you have ever had to witness someone you love struggle to just

stay alive you would be as annoyed as I am.

“There has been evidence that Orkambi has had life-changing effects for people on clinical trials and they have reported a significant increase in quality of life yet this decision means that they are back to square one and will see their health deteriorate again.

“I’m determined that this will not be the end of this story and I along with other people around the country who have been affected by this disease will continue to campaign to make this drug available”, added Christina.

Man told he had too many chances already A man who shouted at Gardai that he made €1,000 per day selling heroin during a public order incident, was told that he had already been given too many chances.

Michael O’Connor of 66 Aghameen Park, Muirhevnamor, Dundalk, was given the warning after he asked that his case be put back to allow him address compensation in relation to a criminal damage matter.

The court heard that on May 3 this year, Gardai on patrol at Linenhall St stopped to talk to a number of males who were involved in an argument. They spoke to the defendant who was asked to leave but continued walk-

ing in traffic, shouting abuse.

When Gardai were trying to arrest another man, Mr O’Connor became aggressive and tried to intervene.

He said he could make €1,000 easy every day selling heroin. There were a lot of people in the area coming out of Mass and pepper spray had to be used in the arrest of the defendant.

He spat phlegm into the patrol car and caused damage estimated at €125, and was found to have a quantity of cannabis.

As a result of the incident, Mr O’Connor pleaded guilty to three public order charges, criminal damage and unlawful possession of drugs.

The court heard that his list of previous convictions included violent disorder and criminal damage.

In adjourning the case, Judge Flann Brennan warned that if he so much as looked crooked at anyone in the meantime, he would get the maximum sentence.

He told the defendant that he needn’t smirk as he already had too many chances.

TWO members of the Defence Forces who pleaded guilty to public order charges were spared convictions after they each paid €200 into the Court Poor Box. Derek Donegan of 31 Hyde Park, Dundalk, and Paul Grimes of 47 Willowdale, Bay Estate, Dundalk, admitted the offences arising out of an incident at Villa Park, Greenacres, on December 5 this year.

The court heard that Gardai came across Mr Donegan who was in an intoxicated state and refused to leave. He became aggressive and tried to kick out at Garda. Pepper spray had to be used in his arrest as he continued

to be aggressive and abusive.

Mr Grimes failed to leave the scene despite being given a number of warnings.

Solicitor, Eleanor Kelly, stated that both men were soldiers and had far too much to drink and too little to eat on the night in question. They had returned to Dundalk Garda Station to apologise for their actions.

She pointed out that Mr Donegan had only previously been before the court on road traffic matters, is a 30-year-old father of two, who was described as an ‘exemplary soldier’ in an officer’s report.

Remembering Adrian concert Remembering Adrian, the major concert in tribute of the late Detective Garda Adrian Donohoe will raise funds for a sports scholarship aimed at young people.

While it had originally been confirmed that funds raised from ‘Remembering Adrian’ would go to causes close to Adrian’s heart, organisers have confirmed that money raised will go towards a sports scholarship,

aimed at young people though, not confined to a specific sport or college.

So far there has been a great reaction to the concert which will feature artists including, The Priests, Liam Lawton, Stewart Agnew, Kathleen Maddy, Leah Kirwan and St Joseph’s Redemptorist Senior Choir.

Christmas concert time at Ardee NS

It’s Christmas time in Ardee when Monastery National School host their annual Christmas Concerts. The school hosted three performances of their Christmas Concert on December 9 and 10 including a matinee and two evening performances.

The night time performances were wonderfully atmospheric and played to packed audiences of parents, grandparents and children.

Two hundred and seventy pupils appeared on stage throughout the Concert and 700 parents, grandparents and friends of Monastery NS attended!

A wide variety of talent was showcased and the acts performed included sketches, songs, plays, tin whistle players, boy and girl bands, the school choir and the All Blacks rugby team Haka dance, with all classes taking to the stage to perform.

The lighting with its many special effects was operated capably by former pupil Nathan Leavy and backstage was slickly managed by Mr McCreanor, Mr McAdam and

6th class boys. A special word of thanks to former teachers Mr Kevin Keane who returned as musical director and Mrs Mary Keane who assisted classes.

Christmas Morning Run One of the longest running sporting charity events in the country will continue this year when Dowdallshill GF & AC organise the annual Christmas Morning Run to St Oliver’s Hospital, leaving from St Brigid’s Park at 10am.

The event was first organised in 1959 when athletes and footballers from the Dundalk club ran from their clubrooms, then on the Racecourse Road, to deliver

presents to patients at Blessed Oliver’s on the Ardee Rd. Among those who were part of the original run will be in attendance again this year, including Jim McCooey, Francie Duffy, Gerry Fergus, Tommy Hanratty, Paddy Whyte, Pat Duffy, Pat Rogers, Billy O’Callaghan, Every year since then club members have made the trip that is one of highlights of the year for the hospital as the club also pro-

vides music and entertainment.

The club now visits St Oliver’s at the Louth Hosptital and over the years, money collected has been presented to the hospital to purchase much-needed equipment such as PA sound systems, wheelchairs, walking aids, televisions and a full size crib with figures.

- There was a wonderful array of businesses trading, such as a health stand selling nuts and seeds, an ornamental jar stand, a company called Touch Wood which had some beautiful bracelets and necklaces on display.

As well as food and jewellery stands there was also a very popular photo booth installed in the hall where students could enter and get their snap taken on the day.

Each company had a unique selling point and the girls have been working hard all year with the guidance of their teachers including business teacher Miss Roisin Mallon who praised the girls for their work ethic.

A 31-year-old father of two who had an argument with his partner while intoxicated appeared at Dundalk District Court where he pleaded guilty to three public order charges.

Dear Editor, Hello from The North Pole. It’s been snowing a lot here lately and everything is really white. I just wanted to tell all the good boys and girls that Rudolph and I are getting very excited about our Christmas Eve trip over to Louth when we will be delivering presents to all the good boys and girls in town. The Elves here have been very busy making lots of toys and games and it looks lke I will have to bring a bigger load than usual to deliver. This is because of all boys and girls but especially those in Louth who have been extra good this year.

You know a very funny thing happened here yesterday. Mrs. Claus and I decided to go for a drive in our new snow sledge. So we put on our warm clothes and went racing up and down the glaciers. Even the Elves stopped working to watch us and they laughed and laughed when I fell out of the sledge and went rolling down the hill. But don’t worry, I will be fine by Christmas.

Rudolph is getting really excited too and he has been shining his nose extra brightly so he can find his way to Louth even in the dark.

I have just finished checking my list again and I know what everybody in Louth wants. They all have been so good and I am very proud of them. Christmas will be here before you know it and as well as the presents they have asked for I will also have some surprises from them too.

Please tell them all to be in bed especially early on Christmas Eve because I will be flying over Louth very early this year.

Dundalk FC’s success is recognised at RTE awards

A MEMORABLE year for Dundalk FC football club was capped off on Saturday evening as they were awarded the coveted Team of the Year award at the annual RTE Sports awards.

Stephen Kenny’s men came out on top of the national poll beating the likes of Dublin’s GAA footballers, Kilkenny GAA hurlers, Cork GAA camogie team, Cork GAA ladies football team, Ireland Rugby team (men), Ireland Rugby team (women), Ireland Hockey team (men), Ireland Boxing team, Northern Ireland foot-

ball team, Republic of Ireland football team, Team Ireland Special Olympics and Ireland’s Women’s Cricket team to scoop the much-coveted title.

The award comes off the back of a magnificent season in which Dundalk FC retained their Airtricity League title for the first time in their history before adding the FAI Cup to the trophy cabinet which completed the club’s first double since 1988.

As well as this they also won the Leinster Senior Cup and the President’s Cup to cement their status as one of the finest side’s the league has ever seen.

A visibly shocked Stephen Kenny accepted the award before speaking of his shock that his team were rewarded with the ‘Team of the Year’ award.

“It’s amazing really when you consider all of the wonderful achievements in the room here and, all of the magnificent teams who’ve achieved things at international level at the various sports has been some incredible teams really so, we’re very flattered – we are unbelievably overwhelmed really to receive this because we were certainly not expecting it.

A MAN who left his house because he had an argument with his partner, ended up committing burglaries at two houses in Dundalk.

Michael Hanrahan with an address at 9A Grattan Crescent, Flat 2, Inchicore, Dublin 8, pleaded guilty to the offences when he appeared at Dundalk District Court and as a result was sentenced to six months in prison.

She added that Mr Hanrahan, who had 39 previous convictions, has suffered from a tablet addiction. However, since entering custody in

July of this year he had received treatment and was now tablet-free. He is serving a two-month sentence at present.

Judge Flann Brennan remarked that he had a very bad record and that he had to take this into consideration.

He also acknowledged the guilty plea and the fact that most of the goods were recovered, as he imposed a six-month sentence.

Adams calls for information on town bombing AT a ceremoney to mark the 40th anniversary of the attack on Kay’s Tavern in Dundalk, TD Gerry Adams called on the British government to provide the families with any information they may have.

On Saturday afternoon, Mr Adams joined with the families of Jack Rooney and Hugh Watters, and with Justice for the Forgotten, in remembering their deaths at a wreath laying ceremony at the site of Kay’s Tavern, in Dundalk.

Jake displays his great talent for writing

A local primary writing with his caring school student has nature to claim a prize in combined his talent for a national competition.

Jake Mason, a Fifth Class student at St Mochtas National School in Louth Village, won the Co Louth section of the National Disability Authority’s short story competition “Someone like me”.

He travelled to Dublin with his family to receive his prize which was €2,000 worth of ICT equipment for the school and €200 for himself.

Jake’s winning story ‘Someone like me’ is as follows: Recently, at school, we learned all about the life of Joseph Merrick, better known as the “Elephant Man”.

He had a disease called proteus syndrome which affected his skin, bones and overall appearance.

People made fun of him and others were afraid of him.

He ended up being an exhibit in a “penny gaff”, sometimes, cruelly referred to as a “freak show” where people paid to look at him. He even wore a mask when out in public.

A lot of people with disabilities were sent to these inhumane shows in Victorian Times and treated in a terrible way because people didn’t understand why they were different.

But these days, we definitely do understand.

And it’s a marvellous thing.

My uncle, James, has autism and he has a job in the local garden centre. Every Thursday he goes to the club in Dundalk which is great for his social life.

He lives in a community house with other people who have

different disabilities.

He loves music, snooker and dancing and has an incredible memory. He comes home twice a week, on Tuesdays and Fridays.

Whenever he meets someone he remembers them forever.

I like to think he’s someone like me.

Jessica’s dream trip to China

A local student’s dlove of languages helped her secure a dream trip abroad after she spent 13 days in China.

Transition Year Grammar School student, Jessica Jackson from Ravensdale, recently ereturned from the oncein-a-lifetime trip where she had the chance to estudy the language and takein some of the tourist sights.

Jessica was picked to go to China after she had taken part in the Chinese bridge competition in Cork in April. Having been recommended by her Chinese teacher, Melody, in September Jessica got a call from UCD offering her the opportunity to go to China for 13 days in October with another school

called ‘Teresions’.

The group stayed in Beijing for eight days and Xi’an for four, and Jessica revealed that they went to many tourist attractions such as The Great Wall of China, Tian’anmen Square

and The Terracotta warriors. They also went to two high schools, Xi’an Gaoxin – the number one high school - and Beijing high school.

They also had a couple of Chinese classes in the Remin Univer-

sity of China where they also took the YCT (youth Chinese test) on their last day. They also went to Beijing zoo and the Confucius Institute headquarters which is where the people who organised the whole trip were based.

Naturally Jessica was delighted to have been given the chance to travel.

“It was a once in a lifetime opportunity, and I’m so lucky and grateful that I was given the chance to visit this amazing country. I’ve always wanted to go to China and I can’t believe that I was actually given the chance to go at this age. It really was a trip trip of a lifetime and I will never forget it. Hopefully I will get to go back again”, she explained.

Students learn of the link between attendance and achievement

There is a strong link between regular school attendance and the feeling of achievement. It is a well-known fact the more often you go to school the easier school becomes and the greater the sense of achievement as the students of Ardee Community School were reminded of this

week during their annual attendance awareness week.

The week was organised by the Attendance Support Team made up of Tony Corcoran, Deputy Principal; Andrea Duffy, School Completion Programme, and Bridget Smith Home School Co-ordinator.

Students were tasked with taking more responsibility for their own attendance by making it a priority in their lives, by preparing for school, by getting enough sleep and making appointments for out of school hours. They were also reminded that there are 198 days in the calendar year

when there is no school.

The attendance support team organised events to celebrate the week which included a daily raffle where students needed to be in school in order to be eligible,

a poetry and slogan competition where students were encouraged to get creative and Super-attenders, students who had never missed a day in school were also rewarded.

A number of transition and Sixth Year students also got involved when they produced a video to promote the message of the importance of attendance and being in school every day.

DkIT join strategic partnership

The position of DkIT as one of one of the most progressive third level organisations was further enhanced in a collaboration with three other colleges.

The formation of a Regional Cluster Strategic Partnership sees the local institute join forces with DCU, Athlone IT and Maynooth University.

The four parties to this agreement have distinctive yet complementary visions for higher education across the region.

Each organisation will continue to function independently but will collaborate on activities

that are mutually beneficial to help them achieve national educational objectives.

Dundalk native and President of DCU, Prof Brian McCraith, said that the collaboration provided exciting opportunities for the development of higher education across the Midlands-East and North Dublin Region The Memorandum of Understanding commits the four parties in the agreement to working collaboratively on three key areas, as President of Dundalk Institute of Technology Denis Cummins explained.

“By establishing a shared academic planning process, a regional approach to transfer and progression and a shared approach to enterprise and community engagement we will further enhance the learning environment and educational opportunities for both full and part-time higher education students.

“This strategic cluster will also create greater academic supports for staff and students and will enhance effectiveness and provide opportunities for greater efficiencies”, he stated.

Woman understands she broke the law

A woman who told Dundalk District Court that she understands it is against the law to drink and drive as disqualified from the road for two years.

Viktorija Sasnova of 43 Langfield, Dublin Road, Dundalk, pleaded guilty to a drink driving charge arising out of an incident on November 16 this year.

The court heard that Gardai on patrol on the Avenue Road saw a car with no lights turn on to the Avenue Road from Hill St. They followed the car and after speaking to the driver, Ms Sasnova

was arrested and taken to Dundalk Garda Station.

A breath sample showed that she was over the limit for driving.

The defendant, who represented herself in court, stated that she understands that it is against the law to drink and drive, adding that this would never happen again. The mother of two had no previous convictions.

Judge Flann Brennan explained that he had to impose a mandatory two-year disqualification which was postponed until June 9. He also imposed a €200 fine.

A man who felt he would be unable to complete Community Service due to a painful back condition was given a ninemonth suspended sentence at Dundalk District Court.

Oladapo Ogunde of 120 Ashbrook, had admitted having cannabis valued at over €1,000 in his home along with drug para-

phernalia, at an earlier hearing.

He stated that it was all for his own use due to his painful condition and the case was put back for a Community Service Report.

Solicitor, Conor MacGuill, pointed out that his client may not be medically certified to complete Community Service duties.

In imposing the sentence, Judge Flann Brennan, told Mr Ogunde that if he got in trouble over the next nine months, he would serve the sentence.

At the initial hearing, the court was told that on October 13, 2014, Gardai searched his home where they came across drug paraphernalia, along with two

cannabis plants in the hot press valued at €400 and cannabis herb worth €738.

Solicitor, Conor MacGuill, stated that his 25-year-old client was pleading guilty to cultivation of cannabis plants, and while the quantity was high, it was for his own use on the basis of a medical complaint.

Girls in St Vincents Secondary School received an early Christmas present when local sports star, Robert Kearney, made a surprise visit to the school on Wednesday last.

The Leinster and Ireland fullback created huge excitement amongst both students and staff as he arrived to promote the upcoming annual Fashionably Talented Show.

The event which will be held in DkIT in January is organised by Transition Year students with the help of Business teachers Ultan Henry and Vicky Muckian and is undoubtedly one of the highlights in the school calender.

Featuring class acts, individual and group performances as well as creative costumes made by TYs, the show is always a hit with the capacity crowd.

Robert, a Cooley native, officially launched the show before wishing students the best of luck on the big night.

St Mary’s College saw the end of an era when the final Marist Ceili took place in the school hall. For 38 years the live Ceili music has brought life to this hall every year.

The lucky students who are successful in the draw for tickets make the most of this opportunity

to dance gleefully and skilfully around the hall where Mr PJ O Naraigh has been a part of this wonderful tradition for most of the 38 years.

All ages from all year groups dance, guided too by their Irish teachers who have practised throughout the week with them so they are now familiar with the steps and movements of all the dances..

Indeed many past

pupils will have fond memories of this special night in their Marist education-many reading this will remember ‘the night of the Ceili’. It is a great night for young people to enjoy Irish dance and culture in a fun and safe environment.
