The kind-hearted community in Omeath are close to fulfilling the promise they made to neighbours to see them return to the home that was destroyed by fire earlier this year.

Last February a fire gutted the home of Omeath residents Paddy and Alisha McKevitt. The couple had only recently returned to Ireland having lived in America for many years.

Paddy was at work at the time and thankfully Alicia escaped relatively unscathed. However, the house was destroyed along with everything the couple owned.

Over the last number of months the community of Omeath has come together

to help the couple in any way that they could. Paddy and Alisha’s neighbour Ciaran Phillips thanked everybody who has helped so far and gave an update on a fundraiser for the couple which will take place in the Grandvue in Omeath this Saturday evening.

“It would make you proud to live here in Omeath and be surrounded by good people both here and in the surrounding areas.

Paddy and Alisha have been astounded with people’s generosity.

Since the fire that night we have been slowly but surely getting the house back to its former glory thanks to donations of building supplies, diggers, dumpers and labour from sound people in our area.

The latest thing to be donated was the roof trusses supplied by Keenan Brothers timber frame that went up last month so a big thanks to these lads for their kindness,” stated Ciaran.

“The final push is on with this great community project and we are trying to raise some funds to get this over the line and hopefully

have this couple back in their home

“I’d like to give a big thank-you to everyone that has supported us in anyway and if you want to lend your support you are invited to come down to the Grandvue hotel in Omeath on Saturday evening where we will be having a bit of a do. There will be music from the rambling strings band and plenty of craic as well as raffles and refreshments.

De La Salle’s Faoi Gheasa opened for Sharon Shannon in the TLT on August 14 as part of Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann.

On this occasion, they were joined by St Louis student Kerrianne McArdle and Greenhills girl Anna Savage.

They entertained the audience with a lively performance of several tunes including The Glass of Beer and The Sally Gardens.

The group made their way back down to Drogheda on Wednesday for their performance on The Gig Rig. Before the gig they took a seat on West Street for a street session.

Hundreds gathered in Bolton Square for the Gig Rig, the packed crowd danced and clapped along to the mesmerising music of the De La’ s Faoi Gheasa.

Man charged after drugs find

As a result of an on going operation by Gardai from Ardee and Dundalk assisted by the Armed Support Unit a premises was searched at Knockbridge, Dundalk on Thursday August 16.

During the course of the search Gardai discovered approximately €68,000 of cocaine

(subject to analysis).

One male aged 26 was arrested and was detained at Dundalk Garda station under the provisions of section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984 as amended.

He was later charged and scheduled to appear at a special sitting of Cavan District Court.

Aaron aiming for All-Ireland glory

When Dundalk won the AIG Barton Shield Leinster title at Mount Wolseley four weeks ago, a massive weight was lifted off the shoulders of Aaron Grant.

The 31-year-old had endured many years of heartache in the quest to be part of a successful senior team but the smile on his face when Dundalk sealed their win over Enniscorthy in the provincial final said it all.

“It’s been a long journey. I have been playing senior golf for the club since I was 15 so to finally be part of a Dundalk team that won a senior pennant was a great feeling. To go on and win an All-Ireland would be unbelievable.”

Having waited a long time to get his hands on one blue Leinster pennant, Grant now finds himself heading to Mount Juliet this weekend with his senior panel team-mates hoping to land a second when Dundalk and seven other clubs tee it up in the Leinster Finals of the AIG Senior Cup. “I believe you have got to

take your chance when it comes along. We don’t know what is going to happen next year so this is a great opportunity for us and we will be doing our best to take it,” said Grant.

Dundalk qualified for the Leinster Finals after three impressive wins over Killeen Castle, Headfort and Co Louth in the regional qualifying round of the Senior Cup at Laytown & Bettystown last June.

“We have two great managers in Alan McCabe and John Conlon and they are brilliant. They don’t leave any stone unturned and their attention to detail is amazing,” continued Aaron.

“There is a great buzz around the club at the moment. Our success is down to a great juvenile programme that the likes of Paul Malone, Vincent Conlon, Jim Carragher and Liam Mernagh have looked after for years. Leslie Walker, our club professional, has also done a great job in bringing players through and his experience is invaluable.”

Aaron Grant land will tee off at 8am on Saturday morning. If Dundalk get through, they will face the winners of the quarter-final between Dun Laoghaire and Tullamore at 2pm on Saturday. Old Conna, Portmarnock, Carton House and Enniscorthy are in the bottom half of the draw and the final is scheduled for Sunday morning at 10am.

Latest Daft report underscores the fact Rent Pressure Zones are not working - Breathnach

Fianna Fáil TD for Louth and East Meath Declan Breathnach has said that immediate dramatic changes are needed to strengthen and enhance the Rent Pressure Zone System. The latest Daft.ie Housing Report published indicates that the average price of rent nationwide has risen by a further 12.4% since June.

Deputy Breathnach said, “Today’s report exposes the fact that for nine quarters consecutively a new record,

higher than previously ever recorded has been reached in the price of rent in Ireland’s main cities.

“An over 20% rise in the price of rent in Limerick city in just 1 year, a 16% increase in rents over the same period in Galway while in Cork, the monthly cost of rent rose by 13%.

In Louth, according to the report, rents have risen yet again and are up 13.4%.

How many more months will go by and record high’s be

reached in the already colossal price of rent for this Government to act?

“Those of us so fortunate to have stable or permanent housing can only imagine how disheartening the price of rent must be for graduates coming out of University or those that once emigrated, who are wishing to come home to Ireland.

“It also goes without saying that those forking out these costs in rent must be incredibly stressed trying to pay

domestic bills or other living costs and possibly childcare on top of it.

It’s hindering so many from being able to save when everything they earn in a month is going straight back out. “An entire generation are trapped in a rip off rental market with zero hope of buying because of Fine Gael policies while Sinn Féin stands on the side-lines voting against affordable housing.

“While I welcome that Drogheda was included in the

Rent Pressure Zones since September 2017 and I have asked that Dundalk should be included too, this Government’s measures on Rent Pressure Zones are not working; it’s as simple as that.

“It is categorically clear from both today’s report and all of the anecdotal evidence we have heard over the past 18 months that the Taoiseach and his Housing Minister need to dramatically change its approach to control the price of rent in this country.”

Breakfast Club in Ardee to be launched Vice-President of the European Parliament, Mairead McGuinness MEP, will launch a Breakfast Club at the Dee Hub, Ardee on Wednesday, August 22 at 10.00am.

The Breakfast Club, in partnership with Tesco Ireland, will be an age-friendly morning social resource where people can meet, socialise, and have breakfast for a nominal donation.

The Dee Hub, at Market Street in the town, is operated by the Ardee and District Community Trust since 2016 as an initiative aimed at meeting local social developmental needs.

“We hope the Breakfast Club will

develop in to a space where the wider community can begin their day in good company and learn from a series of knowledgeable speakers we plan to invite on an ongoing basis,” said Trust Director Michael McCoy. “We are delighted to welcome Mairead McGuinness to our inaugural Breakfast Club.

“We are very happy to have such a distinguished local speaker and look forward to hearing about her work, particularly around Brexit, which is so critical this area.

Moving day for Coláiste Lú and Coláiste Chú Chulainn

Moving boxes are packed, finishing touches are being made and the wait is almost over for the students of Dundalk’s two newest post-primary schools, Coláiste Lú and Coláiste Chú Chulainn.

On August 28 students from both schools will walk onto their brand new campus at the Marshes for the first time. Excitement is building among the school communities as they prepare to make the move.

The 1,000 place state-of-the-art campus at the Marshes will be home to two schools; Coláiste Chú Chulainn and Coláiste Lú, Co. Louth’s only gaelcholáiste. Despite delays in the construction process Ganson Building and Civil Engineering Ltd have been working tirelessly on site to ensure that Coláiste Lú and Coláiste Chú Chulainn will both enjoy their permanent homes on the shared Marshes campus from day one of the new school year.

As work continues on the South

wing of the new campus, due for completion by the end of term one, Coláiste Lú and Coláiste Chú Chulainn will move into the North wing of the Marshes campus. The North wing of the campus comes complete with six new Science rooms, a suite of Design, Engineering and Material Technology rooms, two modern Art rooms, an up-to-theminute Gym and six sports courts, all ready for use.

The move marks new eras for both schools following successful and award-filled beginnings; five years in the old ESB buildings on Chapel St for Coláiste Lú, two years on Chapel St and a two year stay in the former Marist building on Nicholas St for Coláiste Chú Chulainn. Based on snapshots of their new facilities and sneak peek clips released by the schools as moving day approaches, it looks like good things come to those who wait.

Hospitality jobs on the increase in Louth A recent report published by the Restaurant Association of Ireland (RAI) has revealed that 2,177 new jobs in the Accommodation and Food Services sector have been created in County Louth since the introduction of the reduced VAT rate of 9% in July 2011.

This report identifies the direct and indirect employment associated with the introduction of the

reduced VAT rate of 9%. Between Q2 2011 and Q1 2018, the number of people working in the Accommodation & Food Services sector nationally increased by 54,400, taking total employment from 117,300 to 171,700 on a seasonally adjusted basis.

The sector also accounted for 7.7% of total employment in the economy in the first quarter of

2018. At a national level, the increase in indirect employment as a result of the job creation in the Accommodation & Food Services sector is estimated at 25,024. The increase in direct and indirect employment is estimated at 79,424.

In Q1 2018, it is estimated that 4,633 workers were employed directly in the Accommodation and Food Services Sector in County

Louth. The total gross annual wage paid to those workers was €107 million. The total net annual wage paid to those workers was €95 million. Indirect employment as a result of direct employment in the sector is estimated at 2,131.

Total employment in the Accommodation and Food Services sector in County Louth increased by 1,491 between Q2 2011 and

Q1 2018. The total gross annual wage paid to those extra workers is €34.5 million. The total Net Annual Wage paid to those extra workers is €30.6 million. The payroll taxes accruing to the Exchequer from this extra employment is €7.6 million. Indirect employment as a result of the change in direct employment in the sector is estimated at 686.

The walk will feature talks on the following sites: St. Joseph’s Redemptorist Church ,The seven storeys high Dundalk Windmill, The Watters Brothers memorial, Customs House , Old Greenore Railway Station, Franciscan Monastery (Seatown).

We would encourage those attending, to share their own stories and memories of the various sites visited during the evening.

As the summer draws to a close, so to does the Bike Station Summer Cycling League. The final round was held on Thursday last, on the short course of the Fane Bridge out to Dunleer and back, a distance of less than 30km. However the short distance and lack of hills makes for fast racing, with the scratch group averaging 45kph.

Despite their speed, scratch did not overcome their handicap to the groups in front and it was group 5 who caught all the proceeding groups. In the sprint for the line Karl Dolan went early and managed to hold off everyone to take the win.

When the points were added up for the season it was Ardee’s Tomas McCabe who emerged as the overall victor. McCabe has been a regular fixture in the league for a number of seasons now and was a deserving winner.

His consistency and strength on the climbs is where he made his mark, taking wins atop the climbs of Flagstaff, Long Woman’s Grave and Jenkinstown. In between the mountainous rounds McCabe also picked up points in the flatter races.

By mid way through the league he topped the leaderboard, a lead he continued to build upon over the second half of the season.

Louth and East Meath TD Gerry Adams has described the Daft.ie report published today as “deeply worrying for those seeking to rent property in Louth”.

Teachta Adams said that according to the report Louth has witnessed the greatest increase in rental costs in the state in the last year.

which is a 13.4% increase on the second quarter of last year.

“The report also reveals that rents have almost doubled in Louth, increasing by a staggering 90% since 2011.

Date for CBS Class of 68 reunion

A date and venue has been confirmed for the 50th anniversary reunion which is being held for students of the CBS who started First Year at the school in September 1968.

The event will be held in the Windsor Bar on Saturday September 29 at 7.30pm. A meet and greet session will be held in Colaiste Ris at 6pm.

In 1968 there were two Irish classes and two English classes, and all are invited to this reunion.

Paul claims narrow victory at Dundalk Last Sunday’s Singles Stableford competition at Dundalk Golf Club was won by 20 handicapper Paul Lynch who shot 41pts and just edged out Anthony McGuinness (20) on countback for the overall prize.

Alan Uzell (18) also returned a score of 41pts but had to settle for the Category 2 prize.

For the second successive week, David Staunton (8) shot a score of 40pts but after ending up empty handed last week because of the hot scoring he did manage to make it into

the prizes as he took Cateogry 1 by one point from the everimproving Joseph Laverty.

Dermot McKenna (2) took the Category 3 prize while Maurice Murphy (2) recorded the best gross score of 33pts and Fionn Duffy (25) claimed the Juvenile Prize.

Eoin Murphy was in action last week at the British Boys Amateur Championship in Portrush and finished 14th in qualifying after rounds of 73 and 71, at Royal Portush and Portstewart respectively, to make the matchplay stages as the third best Irish qualifier. In the first round he met Switzerland’s Ronan Kleu and won by one hole but he exited the com-

petition at the next stage when he was beaten 2&1 by Jerry Ji from the Netherlands.

Caolan Rafferty finished fourth at the 72 hole Mullingar Scratch Cup thanks to a final round five under par 67. It was his best round of the tournament having started with a 74 followed by a 72 and a 69. His four round total of 282 saw him finish three shots behind the winner Tiarnan McLarnon.

Aaron Grant finished 10th on 288 after rounds of 73, 73, 72 and 70.

Parents urged to shun moneylenders at back-to-school time

As parents prepare for their children returning to school, Cuchulainn Credit Union as urged them to stay clear of moneylenders as an option for meeting the costs.

A new, national survey has identified a rise in the number of parents in debt due to back-toschool related costs. Well over a third of parents in Ireland (36%) now say they are getting into debt trying to cope with costs at back-to-school time.

As a token and to help support its members, Cuchullain Credit Union provides members with the opportunity to apply for a Bursary fund each year. Open to members or member’s children who are embarking on a full time 3rd Level Course. There are two Bursaries awarded each year, valued at €1500 each. Refer to their website for more information www.ccu.ie Reacting to the findings, Brigene Litchfield CEO of Cuchullain Credit Union said that the credit union is all too aware of the struggle for parents this time of year. “We do see parents approaching us around this time of year requesting assistance with either budgeting or saving for the back-to-school spend, or with taking out a loan to see them through.“ Of concern for the credit union was the finding that, of those parents who said they were getting into debt, more than a quarter (27%) said they had turned to a moneylender in an effort to cope with back-to-school costs. This was a noticeable increase on the 20% last year who had opted for a moneylender.

Cuchullain Credit Union would encourage parents to reconsider approaching a moneylender, some of whom charge APR rates as high as 188%. This can lead to a recurring cycle of unnecessary debt and panic borrowing.

School principals from around Dundalk have reported a general mood of relief and happiness as students collected their Leaving Cert Results last Wednesday.

In Coláiste Rís Padraig Hamill congratulated all his students who sat the Leaving Cert and said he was confident that the school was sending out a ‘decent crowd of young people’ out into the world.

“As always there was a mixture of delight and disappointed n Wednesday as students opened their results but all in all it was a very pleasant day and we congratulate all our students and wish them well in whatever they choose to do.

For myself I am very pleased to note that we are sending out a group of very decent young people out into Dundalk and further afield and they will now get ready to tackle the next stage of their lives.

“As we say every year to students who might not have got the points they were look-

ing for, there is always an alternative route to your course. It may take a year longer to get there but there are always options available,” stated Padraig.

Meanwhile over in the Grammar School headmaster Jonathan Graham stated that the school were very happy with their students’ performances while wishing them well in the next stage of their lives.

“We were very happy with our students who achieved very highly right across the board.

We had 92 students sit the exams this year and we were thrilled with the work and effort they put in.

“I would like to thank the staff and students for all the commitment they put in and the dedication they have shown throughout the school year,” noted Jonathan.

Over in Dún Lughaidh Acting Principal Michelle Dolan and Acting Deputy Principal Mary Gilmore expressed their pride and delight at all their students efforts throughout the year.

“Teachers, management and parents are delighted with the performance of our wonderful class of 2018 in the traditional Leaving Cert and Leaving Cert Applied exams. Despite the upheaval of the school closure and move to DkIT the results in the core subjects of Maths, English and Irish at Higher level were very high and across the range of subjects students hit their target grade or overachieved beyond their own expectation.

“There was great joy

in observing the results of the Technology class who sadly lost their projects in a fire in May, their teacher’s excellent preparation and diligent record-keeping meant that their work could be assessed and they all achieved at least a H5 grade, with many reaching the H2 grade. There were two students who achieved a Distinction (over 85%) among the small group sitting the LCA or Leaving Cert.

Applied qualification.

Overall 14% of the class achieved over 450 points; the highest result

was 544 points.

H1grades were a great delight for those who worked so hard to become expert in a particular field of learning. Many of the results achieved were over the grade expected of these students when they joined the school and demonstrates that the quality of the teaching and the nurturing students experience in St Louis pays great dividends.

“We are proud of their efforts and want to say congratulations to all the students, their

teachers and their families for all their efforts over the past two years.

In this current system of third level entry, the points are required to access courses through CAO but we know all of these young women very well and they have other many strings to their bows: they are active citizens, volunteers, musicians, sports women, entrepreneurs, carers and leaders.

“The future of the local community and indeed the country is safe in the hands of these St. Louis girls. We look for-

ward to another school year and to welcoming students back to school in Castletown next week after a busy summer refurbishing and upgrading the school,” concluded Michelle and Mary.

St Mary’s principal Alan Craven commended his students on their hard work and wished the class of 2018 every success in the future.

“Overall we were delighted with the performance of our students in this year’s Leaving Certificate and would like to congratulate all on their results.

There was great excitement around the college on Wednesday morning with the vast majority of students who collected their results delighted with their achievements.

Early indications from Monday’s first round CAO offers indicate that most students heading for Third level had acquired the necessary points to secure their first choice courses,” stated Alan.

“We would like to commend all our students on their hard work

over the last two years and hope that the initiatives that we introduced such as the Senior Mentoring Programme, the Easter and Saturday morning study specifically for Leaving Certificate students, were all helpful supports to them in achieving their goals.

“We wish all of the Class of 2018 every success in their future careers,” concluded the St Mary’s principal.

Finally in the De La Salle college Principal Patricia O’Leary was delighted with the work ethic shown by this year’s group of Leaving Certs.

“We’re proud of all of our Leaving Certificate class and we commend the hard work put in by them and also their teachers. We had a couple of outstanding results with Emmanuel Ntmuese receiving 625 points and another couple of lads getting over 600 points.

“All in all the majority of students were happy with what they got and we wish them well,” stated Patricia.

GSD School of Drama autumn courses

GSD (Geraldine School of Drama) is holding two open days for autumn courses. The first session will be held on Wednesday August 22 at the studios in Creative Spark and again on Sunday Sep-

tember 2 2-4pm.

The open session is to welcome new recruits to drama classes. The group will also be in the Marshes on August 23 showcasing the school and our new autumn timetable.

In May, the school

went on to produce an excellent production in An Tain theatre.

Over 40 children aged between four to 14 years took to the main stage. “A charmed life “was a theatre spectacle which incorpo-

rated two pieces of theatre, Beauty is a Beast and an original drama titled Sisterhood.

The school continued to just blossom throughout the spring into the summer when students took part in exams

through Leinster School of Music and Drama.

The school has several new courses lined up one of which is aimed at secondary school students. This new course will teach

teenagers all about effective communication, public speaking and of course the art of improvisation. It is aimed to launch this course on Saturdays starting from September

15. The school is also taking on registration for new members from August onwards. For

Luke calls for solution to the housing crisis

A local campaigner for equal rights has issued a plea to the Government to make more houses available for young people to rent. Luke Martin from Dundalk says that the number of young people who cannot find suitable accommodation is rising every year.

According to Luke more and more young people are being forced to move back into their parents home sometimes along with their children.

“I speak to people all the time who are coming into me telling me that they are finding it impossible to find suitable accommodation from the council and there is a huge problem with regards to fathers who are separated and what they are entitled to.

“There are single fathers out there who just want somewhere to live where they can

take their children overnight and spend some time with them rather than having to meet them in town somewhere for a couple of hours. They go to the council looking for suitable accommodation they get put off and find it hard to get any satisfaction from them”, stated Luke.

“The system is unfair for single fathers as if they leave the family home and their name is on the house they are not entitled to have their name on any housing lists until they

get their name off the house. This is a process that can take years and you have to ask what on earth do the Government expect these young people to do in the meantime.

“In many cases they end up living back with their parents which should not be happening in this day and age. Obviously no parent wants to see their child out on the street but they should not be forced into taking their grown son or daughter in because there are no houses available.

Luke is a longtime campaigner in relation to promoting parental equality and has been previously critical of how fathers in particular are treated in family law courts and how they are mis-treated by their local council when it comes to housing allocation.

“To go out and try and rent a place for yourself just isn’t achievable for many young people. On average they

are expected to pay €1300 a month which is a colossal amount of money to hand over even if you are lucky enough to have a job.

The council are rejecting applications from young people to go on the housing list if they are living with their parents and it is deemed that house has adequate space. This is crazy and I believe the main reason the council are doing this is to keep the homeless figures down.

“I can’t understand why our local representatives aren’t doing something to fix this.

You can guarantee that they will be all ears when the elections come around but we need their input now,” insisted Luke.

“We need to build more local authority housing and we need to ensure that our young people are not forced to go back to their parents to live as this isn’t fair on either party,” concluded Luke.
