“Their togetherness and love spoke loudest” Tributes paid to Robert and Kathleen after fatal crash

By Paul Byrne MOURNERS gathered at the Church of Our Lady, Star of the Sea, Boher, in Cooley on Monday morning to pay their respects to Robert (86) and Kathleen Marks (76).

The popular couple from Ballagan, Greenore, were killed in a two-car crash on the R173 close to The Bush at around 3:10pm last Thursday. The driver and passenger of the second car, a man and woman both aged in their 30s, were airlifted to Beaumont Hospital and the Mater Hospital in Dublin.

Both Robert and Kathleen were described as ‘an inte-

gral part of the community’ and were keen supporters of their local GFC team Cooley Kickhams. The club paid tribute to the couple shortly after their passing.

“It is with great sadness that we learned yesterday of the tragic passing of our Honorary President, Robert, and his beloved wife, Kathleen.

“No words can soften the grief and pain being experienced by their family at this heartbreaking time. Robert and Kathleen were an integral part of their family’s lives and of the Cooley Kickhams community, and they will be deeply missed by all

who had the privilege of knowing them.

“Robert held many roles within Cooley Kickhams over the years and was always someone who could be relied upon for sound advice, guidance and unwavering support, both on and off the pitch. His vast experience and knowledge, particularly from his time as Chairman, made him an invaluable figure within our club. Indeed, I believe that Robert and his son Sean hold the unique distinction of being the only father and son to have served as Chairmen of Cooley Kickhams.

At the funeral on Monday morning, Parish Priest Fr Malachy Conlon paid his respects to Robert and Kathleen in front of the gathered mourners including Robert and Kathleen’s children Seán, Karen, Gillian and Niall., sons-in-law Michael Shields and Kevin O’Byrne, Seán’s partner Elizabeth, grandchildren Amy, Kori, Lily, Keely, Alana and Paige, Kathleen’s brother Peter, Robert’s sister Mary, nephews and nieces, those who had travelled to the funeral and those watching on the parish webcam.

He told them that Robert had completed

an agricultural course in his youth at Bush and went on to work with the Quinn family at Bellagan, on the farm and later in the transport side of the business.

He later moved on to Greenore Port where he worked until his retirement at 72-yearsold. He was a found-

ing member of Cooley Credit Union which began in 1969 and he gave over 50 years of dedicated service to it.

He was passionate abut it’s ethos and worked hard to provide the means to which a community might support one another.

Speaking on Kathleen, Fr Conlon de-

scribed her as kindhearted, warm and meticulous.

“After school in Rathcor she went to work as a housekeeper with the Quinn family in Balagan. Later she worked for a number of years in McKevitts shop in Carlingford.

there was indeed a great woman.

“Warm-hearted and hospitable.

Meticulously houseproud, a wonderful home-maker, a great cook, an amazing baker, who loved her style. Beyond the home Kathleen served this community with great generosity.

A member of the local ICA and she did trojan work for the hall committee. She was also a pivotal person in Scór na nÓg and there are wonderful stories of her encouraging young people to participate in competitions the length and the breadth of the country.

Fr Conlon then spoke of the couple’s togetherness and their clear love for one another.

“It’s their togetherness that speaks loudest - they clearly loved

one and other.

“They gave amazing witness to that love.

While they reached out to the community with memorable generosity, at heart of their lives were their family, first and foremost.”

Robert and Kathleen’s daughter Karen thanked their friends and neighbours for helping them through the last few days as well as the ambulance and fire personnel who attended the scene of the accident. She then paid tribute to her parents on behalf of the whole family.

“We can never thank you for all the sacrifices you made for us and the unconditional endless love always.

We will try to make you proud knowing you are still watching over us.”

Tougher E-Scooter measures will protect communities and road users—Deputy Erin McGreehan FIANNA Fáil TD for Louth, Erin McGreehan, has welcomed the Government’s decision to introduce a series of new regulations aimed at improving e-scooter safety, saying they will provide greater protection for road users, pedestrians and members of An Garda Síochána.

Following a meeting of Government Ministers, it was agreed that from August helmets and high-visibility clothing will become mandatory for all e-scooter users, while the current ban on e-scooter use by children under 16 will be extended to everyone under the age of 18.

Later this year, legislation will be introduced to require e-scooters to be licensed and registered and to treat them in the same way as other mechanically propelled vehicles. The legislation will also prohibit the sale of e-scooters to minors and prevent the sale of scooters that do not meet the legal requirements for use on public roads.

The Government also agreed to introduce stronger legal protections for members of An Garda Síochána when pursuing e-scooters and e-bikes, mirroring protections already in place in the UK.

Deputy McGreehan said: “The number of escooters on our roads has increased dramatically in recent years, but unfortunately so too have the number of dangerous incidents and serious injuries.

“This year alone, more than 1,400 e-scooters have been seized by An Garda Síochána and almost 800 prosecutions have been brought.

“Many people use escooters responsibly, and they can play a role in how people travel. However, Children’s Health Ireland has also reported a worry-

ing increase in serious head injuries linked to e-scooter accidents, particularly among children and young people. That is why the Government has acted by introducing a range of new measures.

“These new measures are about protecting those users while ensuring there are consequences for those who use e-scooters dangerously or engage in criminal or antisocial behaviour. Mandatory helmets, licensing and registration, restrictions on sales, and stronger legal protections for Gardaí will improve safety and increase accountability.

“I hope these measures will reduce injuries and make our roads safer. I would like to commend the work of An Taoiseach, Minister O’Brien and Minister O’Callaghan for taking proactive action in tackling this growing public safety concern. The focus must now be on implementation.

“These regulations will only succeed if they are backed by strong enforcement and public awareness.

That is how we will improve safety and better protect everyone who shares our roads and footpaths.”

Man with knife shot by Gardaí with ‘less lethal round’ in Dundalk On Monday evening (20th July 2026) at approximately 9.30pm, Gardaí responded to an incident involving a male armed with a knife at Dunnes carpark in Ard Easmuinn, Dundalk.

Frontline Uniform Gardaí were supported by Armed Support Unit personnel.

Gardaí engaged with the male to try and deescalate the situation and directed him to drop the knife.

The male did not comply and Gardaí from the Armed Support Unit discharged one round from

a 40mm less-lethal force option.

As a result of this intervention, Gardaí were able to disarm the male.

The male has been arrested and is currently detained at Dundalk Garda station.

An Garda Síochána has no further comment at this time.

The detained male is receiving appropriate medical treatment at this time and will be assessed by a medical practitioner at Dundalk Garda Station. The male (aged in his 30s) was arrested and charged in relation

to this investigation. He was due to appear before Drogheda District Court yesterday morning, Tuesday 21st July 2026 at 10:30am.

Less lethal ammunition typically has lower kinetic energy compared to lethal rounds and is designed to disperse energy upon impact to minimize tissue damage. The discharge of a less-lethal device has been notified to the Office of the Police Ombudsman (Fiosrú) as is the policy of An Garda Síochána.

One last push for new Louth GAA stadium fundraiser

IT’S been a year to remember for Louth GAA following their sensational run to the All-Ireland Senior Football SemiFinals. Memories have been made this summer to last a lifetime and there is a lot to be positive about within Louth GAA. 2027 promises to be a memorable year for all involved with Louth GAA as the long awaited new stadium which is currently being built on the Inner Relief Road close to the Retail Park in Dundalk.

The construction period is actively underway and is being led by Ganson Group. The plan is to have the stadium ready to host games with an initial capacity of approximately 6,000 spectators upon completion of Phase One. Development of Phase Two will commence as funding allows, featuring the North standing terrace, which will further enhance the stadium’s capacity and facilities and increase the capacity to 14,000. The total cost for the new stadium is expected to be in the region of €37m. The first phase will cost €26.5m while the 2nd phase will cost €10.5m (the majority of the funding for Phase 2 will come from the Government’s Large Scale Sport Infrastructure Fund). €14.8 million was secured in overseas funding through the government’s nowclosed Immigrant Investor Programme (IIP). GAA Headquarters have agreed to cover a comprehensive funding package which was agreed with Louth GAA last year. Club levies in Louth will raise €1.5m (€300 per month for each club) while Louth GAA have committed to raise the remaining €4.5m through fundraising. In total Louth GAA will pay €6m (€5m in phase 1 and €1m in Phase 2) The main fundraiser has been the

All funds raised through Field of Fortune will go directly towards the development of the new Louth GAA Stadium. The stadium will provide a permanent home for Louth GAA, improve matchday experiences, and support player development across all codes and

age groups.

According to Louth GAA Chairman Sean McClean the Field of Fortune represents not just a fundraising draw, but a collective effort by the Louth GAA community to invest in the future of the county.

“Every ticket sold is a step closer to delivering a stadium that everyone involved in Louth GAA can be proud of. We saw how invested people got

with the Louth senior men’s team this year. We had 40,000 men, women and children in Croke Park for our games against Monaghan and Mayo and if every family bought just one ticket it would go a long way to ensuring we begin life in our new stadium debt free and on a positive financial footing.

“As of last night we had sold 15,000 tickets which we are very thankful for and we are hoping now that in the final two weeks of the draw that we can sell plenty more and make a big dent in the money we have pledged to raise for the stadium. It’s getting very exciting now and we were delighted to invite delegates and committee members from every club in Louth down to the stadium last weekend. Everybody was thrilled to see the progress to date and we have to remember that this stadium belongs to the clubs. This is for all of us. MEDICAL COUNCIL WELCOMES PUBLICATION OF SCOPING EXERCISE IN RELATION TO ALLEGATIONS OF SEXUAL ABUSE MADE AGAINST MICHAEL SHINE

THE Medical Council has welcomed the publication of the report from the Scoping Exercise in Relation to Allegations of Sexual Abuse Made Against Michael Shine, conducted by Lorcan Staines SC. Medical Council CEO, Dr Maria O’Kane, said, “We welcome the publication of this report and its recommendations, in addition to the Government’s swift acceptance of the full recommendations of the report.

“I want to pay tribute to the victims and survivors, who have shown immense courage in speaking out, and whose continued advocacy over many years has been instrumental in bringing these serious concerns

to light. For those involved, the issue is not only the heinous crimes committed but the potential for institutions to have blind spots and to fail to act on warning signs over many years.

“The determination of survivors to seek answers has, and will continue to have, a significant positive impact on patient safety into the future.

“The issues raised in this report are serious and deserve thoughtful reflection across the health system and all organisations responsible for protecting patients and maintaining public trust.

“Although our processes and primary legislation have changed significantly in recent years, our

focus is on learning from the findings and ensuring that the lessons identified are fully understood. We are committed to fully engaging with and supporting the Commission of Investigation”, concluded Dr O’Kane.

Meanwhile Labour TD for Louth, Ged Nash, called on Government to move without delay to establish a Commission of Investigation into the actions of convicted sex offender and former doctor Michael Shine, following the publication today of the scoping report undertaken

by Lorcan Staines SC, and at the request of the Minister for Health.

Raising the issue with the Tánaiste during Leaders’ Questions

in the Dáil, Deputy Nash said the report marks a historic moment for victims and survivors and urged Government to ensure that every next step is victim centred.

Deputy Ged Nash said: “The publication of this scoping report is a hugely significant moment for the many victims and survivors who have waited far too long for real justice and accountability. The spectre of Michael Shine has hung over Drogheda for decades. Today offers an opportunity to finally begin laying that ghost to rest.

“The recommendation of the scoping report is clear. Government must now act on it the recommendation for a six-phase Commission of Investigation,

chaired by one person with all phases running concurrently and expeditiously. The men have shown extraordinary courage over many years and they deserve nothing less than a comprehensive inquiry and one that is victim and survivor-centred.

We are a step closer to that and I want to thank the Minister for Health for the very valuable work she has done, and at every step she has been as good as her word. Government must now move quickly to establish the recommended inquiry and ensure it has the powers necessary and that Dignity4Patients is fully supported. After decades of waiting, victims and survivors deserve nothing less,” stated the Michael Shine.

Increase in number of discarded needles outside Halliday Mills apartment complex

INDEPENDENT Ireland’s Ryan McKeown has raised concerns about the discarded needles which he says are becoming more common around the apartment blocks in Halliday Mills on Quay St. According to Ryan he has spoken to a parent who lives in the building and who is extremely worried for her children who she won’t let play outside on their own because of the amount of discarded needles.

“The parent has raised serious concerns that discarded needles are becoming an increasingly common sight around the apartment blocks. Used needles are being left both outside and inside areas where young children play. She told me that she is now afraid to let her children play outside unless she is with them.

“I have written to the local Community Garda requesting an in-person meeting to discuss these concerns, which are shared by many parents in Halliday Mills and other parts of Dundalk.

“Children and families deserve to feel safe in their own communities. We need stronger Garda visibility and decisive action to tackle drug-related activity in areas where young children are at risk.

“I will also be bringing forward a proposal, along with a petition, calling for tougher measures to clamp down on drug use in residential areas and to ensure our public spaces are safe for everyone—especially our children,” stated Ryan.

The Dundalk Leader reached out to the Halliday Mills Management Company for a response. Co-Operative Housing who manage the building stated that they are aware of issues around drugs and are engaging

proactively to help stamp it out.

“We are aware and engaging proactively. We encourage all tenants to report any concerns directly to Co-operative Housing Ireland staff, as timely information enables us to investigate issues thoroughly and take appropriate action.

“Anti-social behaviour is always taken seriously. Staff were recently made aware of suspected drug paraphernalia found on a stairway and in the basement car park via images shared.

Halliday Mills is equipped with CCTV throughout the complex, this assists in preventing crime and safeguarding tenants. Following these reports, CCTV footage was reviewed . When there is suspected criminal behaviour the Gardaí are informed.

“Co-operative Housing Ireland take a proactive approach by encouraging tenants to report concerns, issuing notices and text message communications to residents, carrying out regular inspections and monitoring of communal areas. These measures enable us to identify emerging issues early and respond promptly to help maintain a safe and secure living environment for all residents,” read the statement.

This year’s event will once again be hosted in County Louth, with Annaverna Mountain on the Cooley Peninsula providing 27 competitors with the sternest of tests over a five-kilometre course across the mountain.

Defending senior champions Colin Ryan of Limerick and Molly Lynch from Cork are both set to return to defend the titles they won in 2025, with specialist Lynch going for a remarkable sixth title in a row.

Carlow’s Lyndsey Keohane (nee Condell) was the camogie recipient of the Hall of Fame award, having won the event back-to-back in 2007 and 2008.

In total, 26 of the 27 competitors across the four grades (senior men, senior women, U16 Boys and U16 Girls) are confirmed, with a special guest competitor to be confirmed for the hurl-

Roadworks begin on Hill Street Bridge SIGNIFICANT road maintenance and improvement works commenced on Hill Street Bridge, Dundalk, on Monday, 20 July.

Planned works include the installation of new traffic lights, new kerbing and footpath upgrades, accessibility crossing with drop kerbs and tactile paving, traffic calming measures and full resurfacing of the roads.

The works are due to be completed by Friday, 28 August, in time for the local schools’ return following the summer holiday period, subject to weather and operational conditions.

To ensure the safety of workers and the public, and to facilitate the timely completion of the project, the works will be carried out in three stages, with sections of the R132 (Dublin Road) and R172 (Avenue Road) closed on a phased basis throughout the project.

The traffic management arrangements will be implemented as follows: STAGE 1: Monday, July 20 to Monday, August 3 Hill Street Bridge will be closed from the traffic lights to the junction of Stapleton Place.

STAGE 2: Monday, August 3 to Monday, August 17 The R172 (Avenue Road) will be closed from the junction at Tom Bellew Avenue to the traffic lights on Hill Street Bridge. Local access only.

Community in mourning following tragic death of Raven

Tributes have been paid to Raven Adams, originally from Tipperary but with strong ties to Dundalk after she was killed in a hit and run accident in Belfast on Thursday THE fatal collision occurred in the early hours of Thursday morning, July 16, at approximately 2:40am in the York Street area of north Belfast.

Raven and her friend had just finished work in Belfast and were walking on the street when they were struck by a vehicle. Raven was pronounced dead at the scene while her friend, a 22 year old male, sustained serious injuries.

He remains in hospital.

Following the collision, the driver of the vehicle fled the scene on foot. He was later located and arrested by po-

lice officers. He has since been named as 22 year old Francis Donaldson. He is now facing nine charges including causing death by dangerous driving, causing Grievous Bodily Harm by dangerous driving and failing to stop at the scene of an accident.

Raven’s friend who was with Raven and sustained injuries in the incident has since set up a GoFundMe for Raven’s family to help with costs of the funeral. It has raised over €10k at time of going to press. Dundalk Youth Centre where Raven was a member Eve-

ryone at Dundalk Youth Centre spoke of their deep sadness after hearing of Raven’s death.

“Many years ago, Raven walked through the doors of our youth centre and became part of our youth centre family. Raven will be remembered for the memories she created, the laughter she shared and the place she held within our community.

SILVER JUBILEE FOR PRIEST WHO GAVE UP RICHES IN NEW ZEALAND TO JOIN THE PRIESTHOOD FATHER Paul Montague, a former Administrator in the Redeemer church in Dundalk marked 25 years in the church with a special

Mass of Thanksgiving ceremony in St Malachy’s church in Reaghstown earlier this month. The Tallanstown Parish Priest

began his journey as a priest in St Peters in Drogheda working there for six years before spending three years in Haggardstown and Blackrock. He was Administrator in the Redeemer for eight years before moving to the parish of Tallanstown eight years ago.

Fr Paul, celebrated with his local parishioners and during his homily he spoke of no regrets in his decision to quit his job as a very successful businessman in New Zealand to answer his call to the priesthood.

Fr Paul was responsible for a retail store which had 46 stores across New Zealand, covering both the North and the South islands. The company’s turnover increase was in the region of 20% to 30% per year. The

ir retail outlets were a household name throughout New Zealand and operated a large wholesale and manufacturing division which was considered one of the most successful retail companies at the time. He lived in a very expensive waterfront property with a spa pool and had cars, a sailing boat and all the money anybody could wish for. It seemed he had it all.

However, a dream he had coupled with a conversation with an Irish priest would see him discard that life of riches for a new life in the church.

“One night I had a very vivid dream.

I dreamt that we were having our annual get together at our head office celebrating another year’s successful

turnover. Suddenly a gang arrived and set fire to the building and burned it to the ground. I watched the smouldering ruins and then looked up to the sky which was pitch black. Suddenly a lamb appeared in the sky in a soft yellowy light as I gazed at the lamb it transformed into a brilliant white light and was surrounded by numerous small lambs. In my dream I exclaimed, “the Lamb of God” and the dream ended abruptly.

I awoke startled by the dream and felt that it conveyed a significant personal message. I spoke to a priest friend who suggested that it may have been a call to feed my lambs, feed my sheep,” stated Fr Paul in his homily.

The following year, around he was invited

to a weekend Eucharistic Convention in Auckland. There were a number of overseas guest speakers, including David Parkes from Ireland. After speaking with an Irish priest called Fr Gerard McGinnity, Fr Paul was convinced that he had to follow his calling.

“In 1996, I decided to fly to Ireland in June/ July where I met Cardinal Daly and the now Cardinal Brady who told me they would send me to Rome in October and would write to me to confirm.

“I returned to New Zealand in July and by the end of August I had no confirmation from Armagh. I knew the academic year started in October and in fairness to my employer, I could not give less than a month’s notice. So, at the end of August in

blind faith and trusting in Our Lady’s message, I resigned my position as General manager which shocked my Managing director and work colleagues. Four weeks later, at 2.30am in the morning I received a fax from Rome to report to the Irish College by end of the first week of October and to bring a Bible, a surplice and soutane and blankets. Needless to say, I requested and obtained a dispensation from the ridiculous blanket requirement.

“On arrival at the Irish College in Rome, I was immediately sent to Assisi to join the other new seminarians who were already there learning Italian. What kept me going during these years was prayer, faith, hope and love for God, my faith and

love for Jesus and Mary and the love and acts of kindness from people I met along the way.

“When you consid-

er the journey of life and the Gospel message of love for God and neighbour, surely the greatest journey we all have to make is the journey from selfishness to love. I am proud to state as St Paul did, I was a fool for Christ, when I was ordained on the feast of St Oliver Plunkett, 1st July 2001 and 25 years later I have endured many trials, but have no regrets. Just as Edith Piaf sang in her iconic ballad “Non, Je ne regrette rien,” concluded Fr Paul.

Ó Murchú asks about progress in Pte. Sean Rooney case DUNDALK TD Ruairí Ó Murchú raised the issue of the death of Dundalk-based Private Sean Rooney who was killed on UN peacekeeping in the Lebanon in December 2022 with Minister for Foreign Affairs Helen McEntee.

The Sinn Féin representative asked about progress in the case, specifically the postincident inquiry into the death conducted by Michael Delaney SC. Minister McEntee said there was no update on the appeal that was taken last August by prosecutors in Lebanon the sentences handed down over the murder of the peacekeeper.

But she remains ‘absolutely committed’ to ensuring Pte. Rooney’s family is kept up to date on developments and the minister said she wants to travel to Lebanon to speak to officials on the ground about the case.

Minister McEntee said: “We remain advised that the tribunal has not yet reached a determination. This, as the Deputy will understand, is due to judicial decisions to delay procedures because of the current conflict in Lebanon.

“Despite the fact that there should be a ceasefire, we know that conflict is ongoing and, unfortunately, escalating in

the region. However, my officials continue to remain in close and ongoing contact with our legal representatives as we await these further developments”.

Regarding the coroner’s inquest into the death of Private Rooney, hearings have been ongoing. To date, they have focused primarily on procedural matters. The next hearing is scheduled to take place on 22 July and the coroner has scheduled the opening of the substantive inquest from 17 November.

THE winners of the 2026 Love Your Coast photography competition were officially unveiled last Thursday July 16th, by An Taisce’s Clean Coasts Programme at Dublin’s Smock Alley Theatre.

Now in its 17th consecutive year, the Love Your Coast Photography Competition showcased the Irish Coast in all its brilliance at this engaging and impactful awards ceremony to honour the 2026 finalists. Amateur photographers from across the country submitted over 1,100 photographs this year in the hope of achieving a coveted place among the final shortlist and ultimately to place in the top three of five distinct categories.

Celebrating the breathtaking beauty of Ireland’s coast and waterways, this year’s Clean Coasts photography competition encouraged photographers to consider the 2026 theme of “Impact” when snapping their photos. Designed to highlight the profound interaction between humans and nature, for 2026 photographers were tasked with capturing our dynamic relationship to the coast and showcase how nature shapes our lives, while human actions inevitably leave their mark on our shores.

This year over 390 photographers entered a total of 1,101 photographs in the hopes of achieving a place in the top three in one of the five categories, a shot at the coveted title of Photographer of the Year, the chance to have their im-

ages published in a national newspaper and of course a share of the €5,000 prize fund!

restricted release.

In response, Deputy Ó Murchú said: “I welcome that. I have spoken previously to the Minister about the necessity of providing Mr. Delaney’s report on the incident to (Pte. Rooney’s mother) Natasha and the wider family.

“Whatever part of it can be published should be because it is all about learnings to ensure the safety of our peacekeepers when they operate abroad, while also providing necessary information to the family and others as regards the tragic death of Seán Rooney”.

DOCTOR Mark Clinton from An Taisce states that the law was updated to protect sites like CúChulainn’s Castle.

Two years ago, then Minister of State with Responsibility for Nature, Heritage, and Electoral Reform, Malcolm Noonan announced a new updated act which was designed to protect and promote Ireland’s valuable historic and archaeological heritage.

The Act was essentially a more robust updated version of the previous National Monuments Act 1930 to 2014, and other related legislation, and introduced a range of new provisions to protect and conserve Ireland’s historic heritage. Under the new Act, newly-discovered archaeological sites will be protected and existing sites and structures will be afforded greater legal protection.

act, Minister Noonan stated: “I am very pleased to give effect to this Order, which is essential to strengthen protection of Ireland’s valuable historic and archaeological heritage through its guidelines and enforcement measures.

“These are the first steps to implementing this modern and robust legislation. Our heritage is of fundamental importance, and this Act provides a framework to ensure its protection for future generations.”

An Taisce is an independent nongovernmental organization dedicated to preserving and protecting Ireland’s natural and built heritage. It is basically the National Trust for Ireland.

On Tuesday morning An Taisce released a statement calling upon the Minister of State at the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage with special responsibil-

ity for Nature, Heritage and Biodiversity, Christopher O’Sullivan TD, to immediately grant ‘Special Protection’ status to the Dún Dealgan, Castletown.

Speaking to the Dundalk Leader shortly after that statement was released, Dr Mark Clinton from An Taisce stated that the site of CúChulainn’s Castle perfectly fits the description of the revised Act and said he will be very interested to see the laws of that act being put to the test for probably the first time.

“I know the site well as I have family in Louth and my brother lives in Ardee. I did work years ago on the land with local archaeologist Paul Gosling. When I stood on top of the hill up at beside the castle you could almost feel the history and heritage of the land. Somehow, I feel it wouldn’t quite be the same with a massive housing estate in your eyeline.

“For me we are talking about a site of great historical significance which has got a very high profile locally. A decision on whether to build beside that site is looming large and this is the first big test of the new legislation which was brought in a cou-

ple of years ago by Malcolm Noonan. To me this is a textbook case for why the laws were updated and I see no reason whatsoever how the laws don’t kick in here to protect the site. Everything about the site scores very heavily on the test sheet for ap-

plying the law in my view.

“The Minister has all the information he needs on this issue and if he looks at the information and he looks at the law then he can only come to one conclusion in my view. It’s pretty cut and dried. You have

to have a special license to dig into a site of archaeological importance and only the Minister can apply that license. I’m not sure that can happen if the Minister applies the law to this case. As I said this is the first real test of this newly updated Act and I will

Traffic ‘mayhem’ at Templetown Beach THE road into Templetown Beach had to be closed several times over a three-day period during a recent spell of good weather as heavy traffic caused what a local councillor described as “mayhem”.

Cllr Antóin Watters (SF) said the recent good weather had again exposed the problems created by the narrow road leading to the popular Cooley beach.

“It has just been mayhem,” the councillor told a meeting of Dundalk Municipal District.

“The Gardaí have been down there over the last few days trying to gain access. It had to be closed at the top of the road a couple of times over the last few days as well.”

Templetown is one of three beaches in Louth to retain Blue Flag status for 2026, alongside Port and Clogherhead. Lifeguards are on duty at the three beaches daily from 11am to 6pm during July and August.

Cllr Watters said the council encouraged people to visit its Blue Flag beaches, which he welcomed, but argued that further investment was needed at Templetown.

He called for a feasibility study to examine possible improvements to the beach infrastructure and access road, saying he had raised the issue repeatedly over recent months.

A council official acknowledged that the road had caused problems for years but said a lasting solution would amount to a major infrastructure project.

“Templetown Beach is just a constant problem that we haven’t got a solution to,” the official said.

“A narrow road down to a very busy beach in this weather is what we’re stuck with.”

The meeting heard the road would need to be made considerably wider to allow vehicles to pass effectively in both directions, which could require the council to purchase land.

Gardaí could not manage the traffic there throughout the day, the official said, while the council did not have spare staff available to station someone at each end of the road.

The matter is to be discussed with the council’s infrastructure section to establish what, if anything, could be done.

Cllr Watters also raised concerns about the public toilets at

Templetown Beach.

Templetown after he was sent a photograph showing material coming out of one of them.

“The toilets should be working,” he said. “There’s no excuse for the toilets to not be working.

“That’s not how we want to portray our Blue Flag beaches.”

He acknowledged that improvements had been made, including new shelters, visual displays and a digital display, but said further investment was required.

“I’m not saying it’s all negative, but I think we need more investment,” he said.

“It’s not going away, and it’s just going to keep raising its head every year.”

The councillor also sought clarity on the €1 million received

by Louth County Council for storm-damaged roads, questioning whether any of the funding could be used at Shelling Hill, which remained closed.

A council official told the meeting that the funding had largely covered costs already incurred while carrying out urgent patching and resurfacing work across the county during the early months of the year.

“It cleared our debts, that was the best way to describe it,” the official said.

“It’s not like that million can suddenly be spent on another ten roads.”

Councillors were told a larger allocation would have left the council in a better position to address Shelling Hill and undertake repairs to other damaged roads and bridges.

The Department was aware of

the problems at Shelling Hill, the meeting heard, but funding had not been secured for a complete repair to the road, which the official described as being affected by “complete coastal erosion”.

Commenting, An Garda Siochana said, “Gardaí on proactive patrols in the Louth North Community Engagement Area carried out traffic management duties at Templetown Beach over the weekend of 11th and 12th July 2026.

“For public safety reasons, the road had to be closed for a number of hours on 13th and 14th July, due to the large volume of cars in the area.

“An Garda Síochána is appealing to the public to park legally in designated car parks and spaces when visiting beaches, beauty spots and other public amenities.

“The good weather has seen an increase in illegal parking at locations across the country in recent weeks. An Garda Síochána wants people to enjoy the summer, but do so safely.

“Parking illegally can lead to unnecessary risk and dangers such as pedestrians being forced to walk on roads. It can also prevent emergency services from gaining access to these amenities, including at seaside locations, which could put lives at risk.

“We encourage the public to plan their journeys and think safety first when parking their vehicle. Drivers parking illegally face Fixed Charge Notices and/or their vehicles being towed.

Councillor raises concerns over antisocial behaviour complaints RESIDENTS making repeated complaints about antisocial behaviour are not always receiving even an acknowledgement from Louth County Council, a Dundalk councillor has claimed.

At the latest Dundalk Municipal District meeting, Cllr Sionnan McCann (SF) said she thought the lack of response from the council was “bad form”, raising concerns about communication from the council when anti-social behaviour complaints are reported.

“Where you have multiple people in a certain estate saying this is a problem, and they are putting in complaints week after week or multiple times in one weekend, I think the communication really needs to be looked at,” Cllr McCann told the meeting.

With regard to antisocial behaviour cases, she said she believed the council was also ‘quite slow at moving’ on them and it was particularly damaging in mixed estates where councilowned homes sit alongside privately owned or rented properties and that residents could be left with the impression that the local authority was not serious about tackling problems involving one of its tenants.

“It’s completely ruining our

reputation with the general public,” said Cllr Mc Cann. “They don’t think we’re serious when it comes to those issues and it’s quite frustrating for people who are maybe struggling to pay their mortgage and then feel like the local authority does not care when there’s an issue with one of those tenants.”

She also claimed it was “almost easier to deal with the Residential Tenancies Board or private landlord than it is to deal with the local authority.”

“I think there’s a lot of things we can be doing to try and address that,” she continued. “‘Whether they are social housing tenants or just members of the community, when they email the council or go into the council, they deserve to have their concerns at least acknowledged. I just think it is bad form that that’s not happening.”

Responding, a council official said all antisocial behaviour complaints received by the local authority were investigated.

However, the council could generally only advise complainants that a matter was being examined and that the relevant process was under way.

The meeting heard the process for dealing with council tenancies could be “lengthy”

compared to private landlords, with the official adding, “We don’t have the same legislation.”

The discussion came as the council develops a new five-year Tenant Engagement and AntiSocial Behaviour Strategy following workshops held across the county in Aprill, which brought together tenants, community groups and councillors to gather local perspectives on addressing anti-social behaviour in council estates. According to the council official, workshops had been advertised and had been open to everyone.

A smaller working group is expected to hold several meetings during August before a draft is brought to councillors in early September and the draft strategy is expected to be finalised later in 2026.

Council figures show 16 new antisocial-behaviour cases were recorded countywide between 23rd April and 21st May, including six in Dundalk. There were 33 ongoing cases across Louth at that point, 25 of them in the Dundalk area. No cases were marked as completed in Dundalk for that period. The council defines a case as a unique incident rather than the number of separate complaint forms received.

McGuinness opposed to Navvy Bank plan A COUNCIL-owned site on Point Road should be used for all-weather sports pitches or better facilitated community facilities rather than campervan facilities, Cllr Shane McGuinness (FF) has argued.

Louth County Council has opened a Part 8 public consultation on plans to redevelop the existing Navvy Bank Pitch and Putt course as an urban recreational park.

The proposal includes 23 serviced campervan spaces, a playground, mini-golf facilities, toilets, kiosks, open green space and 38 public parking spaces. A new bus stop, pedestrian crossing, traffic-calming measures and links to the Navvy Bank walkway are also planned.

However, Cllr McGuinness believes the land would be better used for additional all-weather pitches serving local clubs such as Quay Celtic FC and Sean O’Mahonys GFC and other facilities for children that don’t form part of clubs where these grounds would be used all year round.

Pointing to pressure on winter training space in Dundalk, he said indoor pitches at DKIT were

fully booked during the winter and clubs were left stranded and “clubs haven’t got their own suitable winter facilities.”

The proposed site is beside Quay Celtic’s car park, changing rooms and an existing all-weather pitch. Cllr McGuinness said he had proposed last year that the land be considered for additional all-weather pitches and parking and believed local clubs could seek funding towards developing them.

While supportive of the county’s wider tourism strategy, he also questioned whether Point Road was the right location for campervans.

In his view, coastal places such as Gyles Quay, Blackrock, Castlebellingham, Annagassan could create a closer link between campervan tourism and nearby shops and restaurants and the sea off course.

“We have to be smarter at using the sites we have,” he said.

“Just because we own sites doesn’t make it right to do something like that on it.” If there is better located sites for campervans, that are privately owned, we should procure them so that it fits properly into that communi-

“The council says the wider proposal would create a yearround recreational amenity, provide additional parking for the Navvy Bank walkway and neighbouring sports facilities, and support plans to establish three key serviced campervan locations by 2030.

“A large part of the site would remain as open green space, with all existing trees retained and each campervan space would have access to power and water, with foul-waste disposal facilities also provided. Again, another area of concern is Louth County council’s ability to maintain this proposed site and when you look at how we maintain the beautiful Navvy bank, I’m not filled with confidence,” he added.

Cllr McGuinness encouraged people living locally to examine the plans and make a submission during the consultation to get your message across. The documents can be inspected until Tuesday, 11th August, 2026. Submissions can be made in writing to Louth County Council or through the National Part 8 Planning Portal until 5pm on Tuesday, 25th August, 2026.

Calls to reduce Dundalk taxi ranks amid fears parking signs deter shoppers BUSINESSES on Park Street in Dundalk fear confusing taxi rank markings are putting motorists off parking outside their premises during the day, councillors have been told.

Cllr Shane McGuinness (FF) told the July meeting of Dundalk Municipal District that businesses had requested that the large “taxi” road markings be removed from time-dependent spaces along the street.

Although the bays can be used for general parking during the day, he said some drivers appeared to believe they were reserved for taxis at all times, giving the impression there was no parking available outside business premises, and feared receiving a parking ticket.

“The businesses have requested that the taxi marking on the road be taken off altogether to save any confusion,” said Cllr McGuinness.

He also questioned whether so many designated taxi spaces were still needed during the early hours of the morning, when there was generally more parking available elsewhere in the town centre.

Responding, a council official said the number of night-time taxi spaces in Dundalk had previously been examined and acknowledged that, when com-

bined, there appeared to be a large number of them.

The issue had recently been referred back to the council’s traffic administration section, the meeting heard.

Taxis would still need some designated space, the official added, but suggested the existing provision could be reviewed and narrowed down following consultation with the relevant groups.

Cllr Robert Nash (FG) said “there was no need for all the parking bays and the signs put people off because people are looking at the signs thinking taxis are there during the day when they’re actually only there at night.”

He questioned whether changes to the taxi ranks would require an amendment to the council’s parking by-laws. In that regard, the official said the issue would be referred to the relevant section for clarification.

Cllr John Reilly (FG) and Cllr Ciaran Fisher (Ind) both said the way people use taxis had changed, with many passengers now booking by telephone or through apps rather than waiting at a traditional taxi rank.

“We don’t need large taxi ranks that can hold multiples of taxis, we can hail them as we need

them rather than going to taxi ranks,” said Cllr Fisher.

Cllr Rielly suggested providing a clear parking spot outside hackney offices so if somebody rings for a taxi, the taxi can pull up outside the hackney office, while reducing the number of spaces elsewhere. “That would make a lot of sense,” he said.

The council official agreed, adding that Cllr Reilly’s suggestion “seemed sensible” and said it would be forwarded on to the finance section for review.

Speaking on the issue, Cllr Fisher questioned whether Dundalk’s existing taxi ranks were in the most useful locations, noting that fewer people now travelled to a rank to hail a taxi but said taxi drivers should be consulted before any changes were made.

He also pointed out that the taxi rank at the Square in Dundalk is “rarely full” and is usually taken up by Gardai and the Prison Service on Wednesdays leaving it out of use when court is in session.

The council is expected to examine the signage, whether the number and location of taxi spaces can be reduced, and whether any change would require the parking by-laws to be revised.

New Louth GAA stadium to be known as The Edward Goodman Park THE new Louth GAA stadium is to be known as The Edward Goodman Park. Edward was Larry Goodman’s Granduncle.

Louth County Board have announced that the new GAA stadium in Dundalk will be known as The Edward Goodman Park after The Goodman Foundation agreed to become the naming rights holder for the venue which is due to open in 2027.

Louth County Board chairman, Sean McClean, said:

“Louth GAA has had a long association with the Goodman organization, and we are delighted that this partnership is going to continue at our new stadium through the involvement of The Goodman Foundation.

Edward Goodman was a member of the Dundalk Young Ireland’s team that represented Louth in the very first All-Ireland Football Final of 1887 so it is fitting that there will now be a permanent reminder of that historic occasion.”

A spokesman for The Goodman Foundation said: “The purpose of the Goodman Foundation is to support community initiatives and the new home for Louth GAA is something that everybody in the county and beyond will be able to enjoy as it will be a fitting venue for sporting and community events.”

The Goodman Foundation also intend to partner with Louth GAA to provide a Sensory Room in the new stadium

Phase 1 of The Edward Goodman Park will be completed next year.

When phase 2 is completed the ground will have a capacity to hold 14000 people.

International art prize for Omeath artist inspired by River Fane OMEATH-based artist Anna Marie Savage has received a prestigious award at the inaugural Sidney Nolan Art Prize after her painting Uisce Salach I was selected from more than 1,600 submissions from artists worldwide.

Savage’s work was shortlisted alongside just 50 paintings for exhibition at The Rodd, Herefordshire, the UK home of the Sidney Nolan Trust, where four awards were presented on 11 July 2026. She received a Burren College of Art Residency Award, recognising her innovative practice, which combines painting, fieldwork and microscopy to explore environmental issues.

The award-winning painting forms part of Uisce Salach (Dirty Water), an ongoing body of work developed over three years in collaboration with Leeds University.

The project investigates the environmental impact of illicit fuel dumping along the Irish border and focuses on the River Fane in County Louth.

Using water samples collected from the River Fane, Savage employs microscopy to reveal molecular traces of pollution that are invisible to the naked eye. These microscopic observations are translated into abstract oil paintings, transforming scientific research into powerful visual works that explore environmental degradation and humanity’s relationship with the natural world.

The award recognises a body of work rooted in County Louth, demonstrating how environmental issues affecting local communities can resonate with audiences on an international stage.

“It is an incredible honour to receive this award at the inaugural Sidney Nolan Art Prize,” said Savage.

which will be constructed during Phase 2 of the project.

The Edward Goodman Park in Dundalk, which is a €37million project, is being constructed in two phases.

Phase 1, which is currently under construction, is due to open in 2027 and will accommodate 5,000 spectators.

Phase 2 will increase the capacity to 14,000 and is due to commence shortly.

Dundalk Schoolboys League U-15s at the Gothia Cup ALMOST 2,000 teams age 11 to 18 from 80 nations participated in this year’s Gothia Cup tournament as the organizer’s celebrated the 50th anniversary of the competition.

The Dundalk Schoolboys team (U15s) also celebrated the 15th anniversary of Dundalk teams participation in the tournament and made history at the Opening Ceremony when Rock Celtic player Shay McCartney read out the Gothia Cup oath in front of 55,000 people and then declared the tournament open.

The Dundalk team played seven games in sweltering conditions with the temperature reaching an average 25 degrees everyday with four wins and three defeats, scor-

ing 18 goals and only conceding five.

Huge credit to the management duo Stephen Donnan and David Curran who ensured every member of the 20-player squad (apart from the injured Shay McCartney) achieved ample playing time.

The week started brilliantly for the Dundalk players when they attended the Swedish Premier (Allsvenskan) game at the Gamla Ullevi stadium between Gais and IF Elfsborg on Sunday afternoon followed by the first group game on Monday afternoon against Swedish opponents Gerdskens BK resulting in a narrow 1-0 defeat.

The Dundalk boys bounced back very quickly on Tuesday evening with an impressive 3-0

win over Concordia Eschersheim from Frankfurt, Germany, Dundalk scorers were Cian Nitsch McArdle, Jamie Donnan and Sean Watters. Swedish academy side Jonkopings Sodra were Dundalk’s opponents on Wednesday morning.

Sean Waters and Tom Johnston went close to breaking the deadlock but after a tight physical encounter Dundalk were unlucky to suffer another 1-0 defeat. Game no,4 was played just three hours later on Wednesday afternoon and Dundalk achieved an emphatic 9-0 win over Norwegian side Ridabu IL with goals from Sean Waters(2), Jamie Donnan(2), Alex Glogowski, Calum Murphy, Owen Pepper (2) and Tadhg O’Neill.

EVENT 4 of the Summer Series Of Darts, The Thomas and Richard Callan Perpetual Shield was the latest Competition played in the Northend Bar. Thomas and Richard were 2 lads that grew up in the Northend of the town and sadly passed away @ an early age, both leaving very young families behind, the competition is run in their memory and is always well attended by their family.

52 players entered the competition and the quality and standard of thrower each week is on the rise.

From the offset @ least a dozen throwers could have been earmarked as the eventual winner.

All boards saw some cracking games taking place.

Board 4 saw Lee Smyth up against the competitions 2024 winner, Alan Dullaghan.

With the game tied @ 1-1, Lee was waiting on 60 while Alan was @ the oche, Alan took out 119 (treble 19, treble 12 & double 13) to win the game.

Gerry Rice, also on board hit a 14 darter on the way to winning his game.

Board 2, saw Conor McArdle come through the board as the winner and was unlucky to not play against his dad, Brian, in the board final as Brian lost out in the semi-final.

James Callan (organising committee), Conor Mc Ardle (winner) , Sheila Meehan (Northend Bar) & Dicky Callan (Richard & Thomas’s Dad) Board 3 was filled with some cracking throwers, last year’s winner, Michael Gillick was out to try to retain his title and after beating Daniel Dunn in his 1st game, he then encountered Simon Wykes in the board semi-final.

Both players hitting 180’s and Michael had to hit 12 & 13 dart games to beat Simon and progress to the board final were he would beat Conor Dunn and go through to the overall semifinal.

Board 1 saw Stephen Shields out to win the Shield named after his 2 uncles and after getting through to the board final he came

up against Callum McCrave.

Calum raced into a 2 game lead before Stephen pulled a game back, then came a finish to wild celebrations, Callum took out the Big Finish , a monster 170 checkout, and this saw Callum qualify for the overall semifinals.

Callum, at the young age of 16, is making a name for himself in local dart circles.

Coming from a family that is steeped in dart history, Callum is in the Dundalk Youth Dart Academy and also throws with the Northend Bully’s in the local dart league.

The semifinals saw Alan Dullaghan nar-

rowly beat Michael Gillick in the deciding game while Conor McArdle beat Callum 3-0 in the other semifinal.

The final saw Conor go 2 games up before Alan got a game back, both players hitting 100+ scores regularly but it was Conor who would go on to win the Final 4-1.

Presentation of the Shield was made by Dicky Callan (Thomas & Richards dad) and

by Sheila Meehan of the Northend Bar. Conor’s in a rich vein of form of late and will take some stopping.

Next up in the Summer Series Of Darts is Event 5, The Ralph Gore Cup (played in memory of dart players who have passed away).

This Cup, the old Players 6 Cup, was 1st played for in the early 1960’s and is a top quality Cup. Format is Open Doubles, with the winners staying on, like a Royal Rumble of Darts (or last team standing), something different in darts and won

by Davy Gonnelly and Ray Harte last year in the 1st time this format has been tried locally.

Game day four on Thursday seen two games and in the early morning first game Dundalk beat Fylkir from Iceland, it was a first time ever for Dundalk to play a team from Iceland in the Gothia Cup. Dundalk’s top scorer in the tournament Sean Watters broke the deadlock after a superb pass from Cian Nitsch McArdle midway through the opening half and Jamie Donnan added a second goal soon after the break.

Fylkir reduced the deficit and piled on the pressure searching for an equalizer but Mikey Casey in the Dundalk nets stood firm to help earn Dundalk a deserved 2-1 victory, Blake Myles and Dean Ryan’s contributions were vital in the victory. The second game on Thursday evening saw Dundalk achieve a second win of the day with a 3-0 win over English opponents LSS Academy from London.

Cian Nitsch McArdle headed home in the 8th minute to open the scoring. Timileyin Isokpehi was a constant threat for Dundalk in the opening half and it was no surprise when Tom Johnston set up Sean Watters to double Dundalk’s tally early in the second half. Dundalk ‘keeper Caolan Keenan stood firm to deny the English team as they searched for an equalizer, a Tom Johnston goal in the closing stages ensured a deserved 3-0 win.

Friday morning saw Dundalk play their 7th game of the com-

petition against another English team for a place in the last 16 of the B tournament from 128 teams.

Chaterhouse School from Guildford, Surrey were the opponents in this encounter. The Southern English side raced into an early lead but a powerful headed goal

by Anjola Oluajo levelled the score before the half time whistle.

Ryan Callan and Logan McCartney impressed in this game and the surging forward runs by Leo McGrory threatened the Chaterhouse defense on several occasions. The game was heading for the dreaded penalty shoot-out, but the English team stuck the winning goal one minute from the final whistle to end Dundalk’s participation in the tournament.

Overall a gallant and courageous effort from the Dundalk players.

Off the field the Dundalk players enjoyed lots of activities and sightseeing in the beautiful city of Gothenburg with many tram and ferry trips around the city making friends everywhere they went and were a credit to their families and to the Dundalk Schoolboys League.
