THE Shed may be in finer voice than usual for this evening’s (Wednesday) crucial Champions League game with BATE Borisov with rumours rife that international superstar Ed Sheeran will be in attendance for the game in Oriel Park.

The hugely successful multi platinum selling artist is in Ireland preparing for two sold out gigs in Croke Park this weekend and according to a source close to the club Ed has asked for two tickets for the game so he can lend his support to ‘The A Team’ in Dundalk.

Dundalk woman questions fairness of Irish Water bill

A Dundalk mother of two has questioned the fairness of Irish Water billing system which includes both a charge for the supply of water and a separate amount for wastewater charges.

Paulette Fitzpatrick argues that it is grossly unfair that Irish Water assume that the amount of water going out is the exact same as the water going into the house. Currently there is a meter in homes which measure the volume of water going into

the house but none which measures how much water leaves as waste.

Irish Water assume that the amount out is roughly the same as the amount in and this is what Paulette has taken issue with.

“I really can’t under-

stand how it can be fair or legal for Irish Water to charge me for water waste when they don’t have a clue how much I should be charged”, argued Paulette. I actually think a lot of people don’t even realise that they’re being charged for both water in and

water out”, she added.

“Logically I don’t think any house uses the same amount of water going out as coming in. When I boil my spuds the water evaporates or when I have my clothes on the line all that water is dried by the sun. We all drink

water and if we’re out and about during the day we won’t necessarily be going to our own toilets to get rid of that.

But Irish Water , as well as supplying water to most homes , is also responsible for dealing with all the waste water that comes out of those homes.

A spokesperson for Irish Water said that the company charge for both the supply of water and a separate charge for wastewater charge and that accord-

ing to them both amounts are generally the same to there is no need for a second meter.

“Nowhere else in Europe has a second meter to calculate how much wastewater leaves the house. Generally the amounts are pretty much the same so that is why we have the same charges for water in and water out.

Of course – there will be about 500,000 homes that will not be billed at all for wastewater because they have their own wastewater treatment system or septic tank”, added the spokesperson.

Success for Wee County in All-Ireland Clay Shooting

There was plenty of success for Louth at the NARGC National clay shooting championships in Mullingar last weekend with three men from the wee county taking home top prizes.

Dunleer’s Colin Dunne was flawless as he shot 50/50 to win the overall first spot in the high gun event on Satur-

day. Shortly afterwards Dundalk’s Tony McComish was following Colin into the winner’s enclosure as he came out on top in the veterans high gun to make it a great opening day for Louth.

The following day 20 year old Jake Byrne continued his excellent form as he finished with 48/50 to claim his second All Ireland U21 title having also won it back in 2010 when he was just 15.

Jake has had a fantastic year so far having been picked for the Irish Sen-

ior’s at the World Championships in Florida earlier this year.

According to the Louth Village youngster he was determined to finish first in what was his final time entering the U21’s event.

“I’m 20 years old now so this is the last year I’m eligible for the U21’s. Because of that I was determined to win.

I was a bit nervous going into it as everybody was expecting me to win as I’ve been doing well this year and there was a bit of pressure on me to

deliver. I’ve had a great year so far and I wanted to continue that by winning in Mullingar”, explained Jake.

“Thankfully I shot well and won by four shots in the end to win my second U21 title.

All the Louth team did great in Mullingar and the standard of shooting seems to get better each year. The plan for the rest of the year is too keep improving and I’ll be travelling cross channel for the British Open which takes place in September”, he added.

A man who over-reacted when he saw his brother being arrested ripped a Garda’s stab vest during his attempts to intervene.

James Moore of Flat No 1, 4 Linenhall St, Dundalk, pleaded guilty to criminal damage and public order charges at Dundalk District Court arising out of the incident on August 17 last year.

The court heard that at 3.30am on that date, Gardai were dealing with a matter where the defendant’s brother was being arrested. Mr Moore then intervened and began shouting abuse

Kittens dumped in building site The LSPCA have appealed for help in finding homes for three kittens who were abandoned in the town centre last week.

June Naylor from the Louth Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals was alerted by her nephew last Thursday afternoon when he found three helpless kittens in a town centre building site which he was working on. The kittens had been abandoned and left to fend for themselves and according to June it was a miracle that they were still alive.

Woman bit staff member in nightclub row A woman who was involved in a nightclub row with her boyfriend bit a member of staff who went to intervene.

As a result , the security man was left with scars on his arm and had to have blood tests, although he has made a full recovery.

Zita Kelly of Lisanisk, Carrickmacross, apologised for her actions on the night

of August 18, 2012 as she pleaded guilty to a charge of assault at Dundalk District Court.

Insp Yvonne Murphy told the court that the security man had been made aware of an altercation between a man and a woman by bar staff. As he tried to break it up he was bitten on the arm.

MacGuill, stated that the event was totally out of character for his 31-yearold client. She had never been in court before the incident, nor in the three years since.

He pointed out that what occurred was not straightforward. Ms Kelly had been in a relationship with a person from whom she was now estranged. She

had sought and received assistance from the courts in dealing with that. However, at the time she was in the company of the person when the altercation developed.

Mr MacGuill pointed out that the security man didn’t see what happened but presumed she was the aggressor and dealt with the incident on those terms.

His client accepted that she reacted disproportionally as she felt the restraint should have been applied to the other person.

The defendant appreciates that stress was caused to the victim and she had €600 compensation to bring to court, although she accepted that more may be required. The solicitor added that this was an isolated

Many tips provided at fighting seminar Dundalk BJJ hosted the club’s first ground fighting seminar with Team Torres’s Chief Instructor Sebastiao Torres recently.

For the majority of the attendees this was their first time to train with Sebastiao and they were eagerly looking forward to an evening of quality tuition. The session began with a quick warm up comprising of fundamental Jiu Jitsu moves led by Dundalk BJJ head coach Cormac O’Hanlon. The seminar then moved to the main substance of the session which was based on the mount position incorporating submissions.

This was a seminar for everyone with even the higher belts receiving updated tips and pointers in effecting the various submissions.

Redeemer Boy’s get ready for world cup E

The Redeemer Boy’s completed their hugely successful Summer Camp last Friday with 36 pupils taking part in the fun filled “Rugby World Cup’ themed week long activities.

The Summer Camp was part of an initiative called ‘Exploring Pathways to Literacy and Numeracy through Arts Activities’ with participating boys enjoyed a hot breakfast every morning and a healthy snack at break-time.

The emphasis was on ‘fun learning’ and the camp aimed to increase the boys interest and motivation in acquiring literacy and numeracy skills.

The three teachers involved in the camp were Michelle Murray, Mary Fee and Cathy McArdle. The teachers were very creative and used

their imagination as well as their knowledge of the boys’ interests to put together an actionpacked week.

The 36 boys played in a tag rugby blitz and

kept accurate tables of results. Medals were awarded for first, second and third place in each division.

They made rugby cupcakes, felt rugby

balls and jumping clay name plaques as well as learning poems and dance routines, such as the All-Blacks Haka.

Parents were involved in the Summer

Camp activities, which included a Library visit.

Celebrating success was an integral part of the project and on the last day of the camp parents were invited to attend

a “Show and Tell” proE duction.

This saw the boys ex-S plain the week’s activi-m ties to a captive audiencey of relatives and friends.i The newly appointedp President of Dundalk Chamber of Commerce, Michael Gaynor, was also in attendance and praised both teachers and pupils for their enthusiasm displayed during the summer camp.

“I have to congratulate all participants in this year’s summer camp for putting on a fabulous show for us here today.

The staff have been brilliant putting it all together and you can guarantee that all 36 boys will have enjoyed every minute of it and made new friends and enjoyed new experiences.

“You’ve worked hard and played hard and can be very proud of all you achieved during the week”, stated Michael.

Grenade made safe by Army bomb disposal team A LIVE grenade was made safe by the Army Disposal Team during a security incident in Dundalk on Friday evening.

The device is understood to have been thrown at the window of a house in O’Hanlon Park at around 4.30pm but didn’t break the

It was moved to an area of waste ground close by and Gardai were called.

Exciting end to term for Scoil Mhuire students

EIGHTy-SEVEN students from Scoil Mhuire na nGael had a memorable end to the school year when they received the Junior Achievement Our Universe programme award.

Through hands-on activities

the students learned to value and understand the scientific world that surrounds them and the award was presented by Louth County Council’s Pamela Dagg.

Pamela also introduced the students to the role science plays

in industry in Ireland today and the numerous career opportunities available to them in the future. In addition, the students had a welcome visit from Garda Grace Harvey who introduced them to some detective work

when they had to help Pamela solve the ‘Mystery of Maggie’s Manor’ through the use of chromatography.

Elizabeth Sloane, Scoil Mhuire na Gael, commended Pamela on her delivery of the programme.

“On behalf of the sixth class teachers I would like to thank Pamela Dagg for conducting the ‘Our Universe’ programme with our classes.

“The children thoroughly enjoyed the lessons and the teach-

ers felt they were of great educational benefit, especially the forensic science workshop as Pamela invited the community Garda to participate. We hope to avail of Pamela’s expertise again next year.”

A HELICOPTER had a lucky escape when he escaped uninjured following a crash landing on the Cooley Mountains over the weekend.

The incident happened just before 5pm on Sunday afternoon at South Commons, Carlingford.

The 60-year-old pilot

was the only occupant in the helicopter at the time.

Emergency personnel attended the scene but the pilot was reported to

Ryan broadcasts from Holly’s Horse Haven

Holly’s Horse Haven, the Omeath-based equine charity that helps horses to help people welcomed Ryan Tubridy and 2FM to their centre last week, to celebrate the National Lottery’s support for the charity.

The entire show was broadcast from Hollys’ Horse Haven in Omeath on Tuesday morning after producers saw a video on the National Lottery website showing all the amazing work done in the centre.

Holly’s Horse Haven has rescued and helped countless abandoned or abused horses, donkeys and ponies over the years, and the numbers are sadly increasing as more and more animals

are mistreated and discarded. Holly’s provides rehabilitation to these animals, and then re-homes many of them with loving owners.

Many of Holly’s animal guests remain at the centre to help owners Elaine and Joe Duffy to run social and educational programmes.

These programmes help people with learning, physical and/or social limitations who find enormous benefit from working with and car-

ing for horses, as Elaine explained.

“Our rehabilitated animals help us to help large communities of people who find joy and

learning through them. ”The centre adopts a relatively new type of rehab therapy which teaches youth, disabled and troubled individu-

als how to care and be responsible for others. Equine Therapy involves the caring for horses as a means to accomplish this and grow as a person.

The combination of working with the animal and caring for them enables the individual to grow emotionally, mentally, physically, and even spiritually.

In 2014, Holly’s received funding from The National Lottery, including financial support for the centre’s summer camp programmes, as well as a national media campaign to raise awareness about the charity.

The support resulted in yesterday’s broadcast with Ryan Tubridy, and the national aware-

ness that Holly’s needs to continue its work.

Youth was having a problem with tablets An 18-year-old man who committed a series of offences at a time when he was having problems with tablets is making an effort to turn his life around and hoping to get a job.

Claddagh Park, Dundalk, appeared at Dundalk District Court where he pleaded guilty to breaking into a number of cars in the Bay Estate area between April and May of this year.

On April 22 the defend-

ant also broke into a car at Kingswood where he stole €4,000 cash and a camera.

The camera was later recovered. On April 28 he was the passenger in a stolen car that failed to stop for Gardai.

On May 11 he entered

Boots Pharmacy and stole goods valued at €364.

Solicitor, Peter Lavery, stated that up to the string of offences, the 18-year-old had no previous convictions.

He had been having a problem with tablets but hasn’t

taken them since.

He realised he had a difficulty with drugs that got the better of him, but he is now a changed man and meeting with a drugs counselor. He hopes to get a job and it is his intention not to offend

again.

Judge Flann Brennan ordered a Probation Report as he adjourned the case to November 4 and stated that compensation should be addressed.

Ciaran heads leaderboard at Dundalk GC

Seven birdies helped propel Ciaran Sheridan (5) to the top of the leaderboard after Round One of Brendan Keane’s Captain’s Prize.

Ciaran will now play in the final group in Round 2 on Sunday week along with Barry Grennan and Paul O’Callaghan who are among a group of five players on 67.

Included in that group is another five handicapper, Clem Walshe, whose 67 led home the field in Saturday’s qualifiers with Sheridan taking Sunday’s accolade.

Players scoring 78 nett or better qualified to play in the Second Round and the time sheet will be available for booking from Thursday at 11am.

“Amy already has the record for European medals having won two gold and a silver in the last three championships which is a fantastic achievement and she is really determined to make it four next month”, explained Tony.

“Orla has been with us since she was 11 and has developed into a fantastic boxer losing only one contest since then. She had a really

tough first European Championships where she was knocked out by a Russian girl but she bounced back this year in the World Championships where she boxed beautifully and showed she really belongs at that level.

“The next step for her now is to get a medal and I’m quietly confident she can do it if she gets a decent draw.” added the proud coach.

Meanwhile Jim O’Neill, coach in Clann Naofa boxing club in Muirhevnamor spoke of his pride regarding 14 year old Shauna O’Callaghans selection for the Irish team.

“Shauna has been with us since she was ten and she has really improved

over the last couple of years. She beat the highly regarded Shannon Reilly from Katie Taylor’s gym and also beat an English European champion in Dundalk a couple of months ago before doing well at the World’s in Taiwan so she’s in flying form”, explained Jim. “We are all so proud of her achievements and it’s proof that hard work and dedication to your sport can reap rewards”, added Jim. The Irish team are currently in a training camp in Edenderry preparing for the European Championships which take place between August 15th and 24th in Keszthely by Lake Balaton.

Clinical Dundalk rally to victory Dundalk 1st XI travelled to South Dublin to face Railway Union in a top of the table clash on a sunny Sunday afternoon. Having won the toss, captain Jiwan Jodhani elected to bat and sent in openers Michael Mullen and Lithen Matthew. Direct bowling from Railway kept Dundalk under wraps and they struggled to a modest 47/3 from 20 overs.

Dundalk boxers have once again showed they are punching above their weight with the news that three locals have been selected for the Ladies Irish team which travel to the EUBC European Women’s Youth and Junior Championships in Hungary next month.

Dealgan boxers Amy Broadhurst and Orla Garvey will be joined by Clann Naofa’s Shauna O’Callaghan as they take on Europe’s best in Keszthely next month.

The fact that three of the eighteen strong Irish team come from Dundalk shows just how successful the local coaching system is here in town.

Tony Broadhurst who is a coach in Dealgan boxing club in Marian Park was understandably delighted that two of his charges had been selected for the European Championships.

“We got official confirmation last week that Orla Garvey (57kg Junior) and my daughter Amy Broadhurst (57kg Youth) were picked for the Irish team and we were all delighted with the news”, exclaimed Tony.

Dundalk Cricket Club enjoyed a dramatic victory at the weekend

Michael Mullen saw him finish with five wickets and he took out the final two batsmen to give Dundalk a dramatic win and a place at the top of the table.

On Saturday, Dundalk 2nds came up against Merrion. Despite a marvellous effort in the field, bowling the Dublin outfit out for 127, Dundalk lost early wickets and never

recovered, eventually coming up short by 20 runs. Glen Armstrong was the stand out performer, taking three wickets and top-scoring with 22.

Looking forward to trip to Olympics

Heritage Week events in Blackrock BLACKROCK Tidy Towns have announced details of this year’s National Heritage Week event in the village. Local historian and author Noel Sharkey will continue his series of annual on-site talks with a presentation at the Sundial on the sinking of the “Mary Stoddart” just off Blackrock in April 1858.

Eleven men lost their lives in what was the worst disaster ever in Dundalk Bay. Seven were crew members, but four were local people who died in the rescue attempt.

One was Captain James Kelly, whose name was subsequently immortalised following the erection of the Kelly monument in Roden Place to commemorate all those who perished in the disaster.

Another was James Crosbey from Main Street, Blackrock, who was only 25 when he died. Noel will follow a detailed timeline of the events of that fateful week and, in conjunction with Charlie McCarthy, has produced a comprehensive handout to accompany the talk.

The evening will culminate with the unveiling of two plaques - one at the site of the house where James Crosbey died after being brought ashore, and a second marking the location of the first Blackrock Lifeboat station which was inaugurated as a response to the disaster. The talk will take place on the evening of Thursday August 27, and admission is free.

A Dundalk man who has been picked to be an official volunteer at next week’s Special Olympic games in Los Angeles has thanked everybody who helped him raise money to pay for the trip of a lifetime.

Wayne Mooney from St Nicholas Avenue in Dundalk applied for the role of volunteer having helped out in St Therese’s Special Olympic club in Dundalk for a number of years.

Earlier this year he got a letter in the post to say he had been selected as a volunteer for the World Summer Games in LA which will take place between July 25

before sealing what he is sure will be one of the best experiences of his life to date.

“I needed to raise €4750 by the end of June before I was officially given the green light to travel to Los Angeles for the Special Olympics”, explained Wayne. “With the help of some very generous people around Dundalk I’ve managed to reach that total and I fly out to LA on Thursday. I’d like to thank the Lions Club, the Dundalk Arch Club, Dundalk Credit Union, Cerebal Palsy Ireland Wayne Mooney and all my family and friends who helped me to August 2. raise the money. I’d However, there was also like to thank an one more hurdle which anonymous donor who Wayne had to overcome put a very generous do-

nation of €400 into my bank account. I have no idea who put it in but if they read this I’d like to give a big thank you to them”, stated a grateful Wayne.

Volunteers have been described as the backbone of the Olympic movement and their roles include guiding the athletes through their drills on the field, making sure the events are run properly, and giving encouragement and support to the athletes.

Wayne, who is 32, is a keen supporter of the Special Olympics movement. He is hopeful that he will one day participate in the games and is looking forward to soaking in the atmos-

phere and getting a feel for the event next summer in L.A. “I’m really looking forward to getting out there and soak up the whole experience.

I know James Meenan from Dundalk and I’ll be cheering him on as he takes part in the 100 and 200 metres. It’s one of the biggest events in the world and I’m really happy that I’m going to be involved in it helping out around the stadium. I think the Special Olympics are a brilliant movement and I can still remember the excitement in the country when they were held here in 2003. I’m determined to enjoy every second over there”, promised Wayne.

Prospects will be affected by driving ban A RECENT graduate suffered a blow in his attempts to find work after being banned from driving for two years.

David Brady of Esher, Ballinalee, Longford, pleaded guilty to a charge of drink

driving at Dundalk District Court and was also fined €200.

The court heard that on September 16 last year, the defendant was stopped by Gardai on Park St. He was taken to the Garda Station

where a blood sample revealed that he was over the limit for driving.

He was co-operative with Gardai and apologised for his actions.

Solicitor, Frank McDonnell stated that the 21-year-

old, who had no previous convictions, recently secured his degree and that the loss of a licence would be a blow to his hopes of getting work.

Judge Grainne O’Neill postponed the disqualification to November 1.

Lorry driver had a concealed diesel tank

A man who was low on money agreed to deliver diesel to a man in Ardee concealed the tank in a lorry that was unsuitable for carrying such a load.

As a result, Gerard Muldoon, of 13 David St, Keady, Co Armagh, appeared in Dundalk District Court where he was fined €1,000 after admitting charge of dangerous driving.

The court heard that on October 24, 2013, Gardai on patrol on the M1 noticed a lorry driving in a slow and laboured manner.

It left the motorway at Junction 14 and headed towards Mullins Cross.

Gardai spoke to the driver, Gerard Muldoon, who told them that the tacograph was not fitted and he didn’t have records for the previous 28 days. The machine had not been calibrated since 2009. Charges in relation to these issues were struck out as regulations were not formally proved in court.

While speaking to the driver the officer noticed a smell of diesel and when he looked in the rear of the lorry he found a fuel tank concealed by sheets of plywood.

The driver claimed that it was kerosene but he was arrested as the Garda suspected he had diesel and was attempting to avoid paying duties.

Sgt James Walsh who examined the lorry stated that while the lorry was in good mechanical order, it was not fit for carrying fuel safely. The tank was likely to turn over on a bend and that it contained no warnings signs of fuel on board, nor did it carry a fire extinguisher.

Barrister, David Costello, asked for the charge of dangerous driving to be struck out as the defendant was carrying a small amount of fuel at a low speed that wasn’t a danger to the public.

When Judge Flann Brennan refused to dismiss, counsel asked that the charge be reduced to careless driving, which was accepted by the court.

Mr Costello stated that his 60-year-old client is a father of four and grandfather of seven. At the time he had separated from his wife and was low on money.

He agreed to make a delivery to a man in Ardee, but the man had not turned up and was on his way home when stopped by Gardai.

He asked for his client not to be disqualified as he worked as a courier with Fastway Couriers.

Judge Brennan imposed a fine of €1,000 in respect of careless driving, taking into account a charge of driving a defective vehicle.

RCNE recruit helpline volunteers Rape Crisis North East (RCNE) is offering you the opportunity to attend a Helpline Training Programme which will commence on Thursday September 17 and finish on Friday October 23, 2015.

The training is free and in return, RCNE will ask you to commit to four hours of your time per week to provide tel-

ephone counselling support to survivors of rape and sexual violence. The Helpline Training is funded by the Manuela Riedo Foundation.

The training will take place in Rape Crisis North East, 59A Anne Street, Dundalk, and involves 12 day workshops over six weeks (Thursdays and Fridays).

RCNE Helpline Service is a “lifeline” for many victims of rape and sexual abuse who need to talk to someone who cares. All telephone volunteers are trained to listen, support and offer information and counselling support to callers who use the line.

by Gardai for his own safety due to the fact that he was extremely intoxicated. Gardai were called to the Market Square on July 2 this year where they found a man asleep in a flower bed. After they woke him, he was extremely intoxicated and was arrested for his own safety.

Warned not to drive without insurance A Dundalk man was warned that if he drove without insurance again he would be disqualified after being given the chance to keep his licence.

Shane McDonagh of 3 Naughtons Close, Dundalk, pleaded guilty to charges of no insurance, no licence and careless driving on April 30 this year when he appeared at Dundalk District Court.

Insp Yvonne Murphy stated that on that day Gardai were on patrol at Cocklehill, Blackrock,

when they noticed a van pulling in on seeing them. They signalled for the defendant to stop and when he failed to do so they followed. He then failed to stop at a stop sign and veered across the white line.

Solicitor, Paula Tiernan, stated that her client, who had no previous convictions, accepted that the manner of his driving was a disgrace and that he apologised. He accepted that he shouldn’t have been driving without a licence or insurance.

She added Mr McDonagh is involved in community training and has the opportunity to travel to America, and this would be impeded by a conviction.

In relation to the no insurance charge, Judge Flann Brennan found the facts proven and dismissed the case. For careless driving he imposed a €300 fine and took the charge of having no licence into consideration. He warned the defendant that if he drove again without insurance he would be disqualified.

YOUNG hurlers from local clubs provided the colour and excitement as the 2015 M Donnelly All-Ireland Poc Fada was officially launched at the Dundalk Tourist Office on Saturday afternoon.

The competition is to be held in the Cooley Mountains on Saturday August 1 at Noon and the launch was hosted by Tourism Officer, Sinead Roche. The offices were also suitably decorated with Shay Larkin’s magnificent photo of eight-times winner Brendan Cummins on the mountain above the tourist office replica of the Brown Bull of Cooley.

There was a large attendance which included members of the local committee Chairman Pat

Harnett, Secretary Josephine Maguire, MC on the day Pat Hamilton, the first winner of the competition in 1960 Damien Callan, Shay Larkin and Paul Ward. Croke Park was represented by National Chairman Humphrey Kelleher.

A number of members and young players and parents of the local hurling clubs Nh Moninne and Pearse Óg were also in attendance.

Humphrey Kelleher was the first speaker and said that the local committee were very organised and did a great job of running the event, he said it was great that most counties now hold their county finals on a mountain instead of along the road as in the past.

He also said it was great to see the young local players of Nh Moninne and Pearse Óg in attendance and showing their skills on the Square, these are the future players of the game.

He thanked Sinead Roche again for hosting the event and also the sponsor Martin Donnelly for his continued .

The Louth GAA Chairman Des Halpenny welcomed the decision that a Louth contestant, Gerard Smyth will also be taking part.

He also expressed the hope that this would encourage more local people to attend the event and more people to volunteer for the day, he said everyone should do the course at least once in their lifetime.

A man who came to Dundalk on a stag party intervened in an argument between two friends and ended up being arrested.

Kenneth Cummins of 15A Thorndale Estate, Dublin Hill, Cork, was told that he would be given the opportunity to avoid a jail sentence if he paid compensation for damage caused during the incident.

Insp Yvonne Murphy stated that Gardai were called to the Imperial Hotel at 3.45am on April 12 this year. The

defendant had broken a glass panel in a door and was asked to calm down. He was abusive to staff and pointed his finger in the chest of a Garda, and pepper spray had to be used to arrest him. The damage was estimated at €400.

Solicitor, Conor MacGuill, asked the court to treat this incident as different from his previous 24 convictions. He explained that Mr Cummins travelled from Cork for a stag party and after a row broke out between two

friends, he intervened.

He accepted that he behaved inappropriately and that he had drink taken. He apologised to the Gardai and handed in €200 in compensation. The court was told that he currently had two weeks Community Service to complete.

Judge Flann Brennan adjourned the case to October and stated that he wanted the remainder of the compensation paid. If that is the case he would impose a sentence of 100 hours in lieu of three months.

MINISTER for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources Alex White TD has met with Louth County Council in Dundalk to review the completion of the energy upgrade of 2,100 local authority homes throughout Louth.

The works were completed as part of the Better Energy Communities 2014 programme, partfunded by the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI).

The ‘Louth Energy Pilot Project’ has been described as the largest social housing “Energy Efficiency Improvement Scheme” of its type to take place in Europe this year according to Cathaoirleach of Louth County Council Cllr.

another way of delivering local jobs. The other benefit is to the homeowners who are struggling to pay energy bills and who now have the ability to actively manage their energy use”, he stated.

The uniqueness of this scheme is highlighted in the collaborative approach undertaken to fund the energy improvement works with financial and technical guidance provided by Electric Ireland, who as the major co-funder

of the project has been involved in energy efficiency improvement works undertaken in Dundalk over the last few years, including €3m spent on the Cox’s Demesne Regeneration Scheme.

It is expected that later in the year that many other local authorities and social housing agencies throughout Ireland will now seek to replicate the project carried out in Louth with climote and other project partners.

The possible appearance will certainly add to the excitement in the town which is approaching fever pitch.

A campaign has been started to ‘Turn the Town Black and White’ by encouraging people to decorate homes and business premises. Some businesses are encouraging workers to wear their club colours, and discounts are available for people wearing black and white.

To encourage the younger generation, flags and sweets will be given out starting on Park St at 5pm while buskers will

also be helping create a special atmosphere.

The Airtricity League Champions take on the Belarus side in a game which has been billed as ‘the biggest in the club’s long and proud history’.

Having secured a precious away goal in last week’s heroic 2-1 defeat against Champions League regulars BATE, Dundalk have given themselves a real chance of progressing to the next round where they would face either Videoton from Hungary or Welsh side TNS. “We know the job is only half done and we know we still have a lot to do to reach the next round but we’re in with a shout and you can guarantee these players won’t leave anything out on the pitch”, promised Ciaran.

Details on new DS5 announced

Details just in on the new DS5, which is the flagship model of the DS range which has split from Citroen, as a Different Spirit premium brand.

The DS5 is available in trim choices, Elegance & Prestige, there is also a 1955 Limited Edition is celebrate the sixth anniversary of the first DS model back in 1955.

The Elegance is equipped with keyless entry, allaround electric windows, digital air conditioning, LED daytime running lights, auto lights and wipers, cockpit roof with 3-part glass roof and electric sunblinds. Satellite navigation, DAB radio tuner, mirror link and Bluetooth with streaming and hands free phone facility.

The Prestige editions add to the Elegance spec with DS Connect Box / DS eTouch Emergency & Assistance systems, carpet mats, Black Leather Park with electric driver’s seat. Plus reversing camera, DS LED Vision with Xenon headlights and scrolling indicators, blind spot monitoring, interior mood lighting, and front and rear parking sensors (rear on Elegance).

The DS5 1955 Limited

Edition is finished in Ink Blue with bespoke badging and is based on the Elegance spec with ‘Criollo’ semianiline ‘watch strap’ leather seats and DS LED Vision headlights. It is powered by the BlueHDi 150 S&S 6-speed manual powertrain, which according to official data is capable of 68.9 mpg on the combined cycle with CO2 emissions of 105 g/km.

There is a choice of five

engines; the petrol option is the THP 165 with S&S and EAT6 automatic transmission.

There are three diesels units with the choice of 120, 150 or 180hp outputs. The 120 and 150hp models come with a 6-speed manual gearbox with the 180hp coupled to the 6-speed EAT6 automatic transmission.

There is a DS 5 Hybrid 4x4 200, a diesel hybrid

powered by 200hp diesel motor powering the front wheels and an electric motor on the rear axle. There is a choice of four drive modes, Auto, Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV), four-wheel drive (front wheels powered by the combustion engine and rear wheels powered by the electric motor) and Sport (maximum use of the electric motor in parallel with the combustion engine).

Power comes from the choice of either a 130 PS 1.5 litre i-VTEC petrol unit with the option of either a sixspeed manual or CVT transmission or if you prefer there is a 120 PS 1.6 litre i-DTEC diesel engine mated to a sixspeed box.

There is a choice of three models, ‘S’, ‘SE’ and ‘EX’ editions.

The ‘SE’ sees the introduction of the Honda’s Connect in-car infotainment system comprising a 7” screen with an Android powered operating system which will run pre-installed

or downloadable apps which include web browsing, real-time traffic information, news and weather, social media, and internet music stations. Plus Honda's Advanced Driver Assist System, which uses radar sensors, plus forward- and rear-facing cameras. It also supports includes Forward Collision Warning, Traffic Sign Recognition, Intelligent Speed Limiter,

Lane Departure Warning and High-beam Support System.

The top of the range ‘EX’ adds to the above specs, 17” alloy wheels, tilt-and-slide opening panoramic glass sunroof plus full leather interior, smart entry and start, and a rearview camera. The ‘EX’ comes with an integrated Garmin satellite navigation system, which can be specified on the ‘SE’ model.
