US Vice President Joe Biden will return to the land of his ancestors this weekend with a trip to Cooley planned as part of his six day stay in Ireland Mr Biden has often spoken about his Irish roots and how proud he is of them because it was where his ancestors had emigrated from ‘seeking a better future’. According to Joe his great great grandfather Owen Finnegan emigrated from Ireland during the Great Famine to give his family a better life.

After many frustrating years it seems that a solution to the Quay Street Ard Dealgan Aparment complex could be finally on the horizon.

Sinn Féin Councillor Jennifer Green who has been battling on behalf of residents from the Quay Street revealed that the provision of 38

dwellings could help reinvigorate the area.

“The council have been working on this over this past year or more and have sought a voluntary housing body to take on the Ard Dealgan complex.

Cluid are preparing a funding proposal for the site which hopefully will provide around

38 dwellings.

“Although it is still at the early stages, the move is very much welcomed. We have seen the Quay area lose its sense of spirit since these apartments had to be abandoned and were left to wrack and ruin. The apartments are a magnet for problems and anti-social ac-

tivities and have been a living nightmare for nearby residents; not to mention the pressure it has put on the fire services as they have had to attend several fires using heavy duty hydraulic equipment”, stated Cllr Green.

Louth County Council held an energy awareness day in the town hall last Thursday to help outline the benefits of reducing energy consumption both in terms of environmental sustainability and cost savings.

A ‘Watt Challenge’ took place using a bicycle to see who could generate the most electricity through pedal power with prizes for the best scores for men and women as well as random prizes drawn for those who participated.

Irish energy prices high but going down Irish households pay more for their electricity than anywhere else in the EU except Germany and Denmark, coming 3rd in the EU price rankings. But when taxes are excluded, Irish households pay more than anywhere in Europe except the UK. The picture is somewhat better for gas, with Irish households coming 9th place in the rankings. When taxes are discounted, domestic Irish gas prices are the 6th highest in the EU. However, the good news is that in contrast to many EU countries, domestic energy prices in Ireland for both gas and electricity are on their way down. Electricity prices in Ireland in Q4 2014 v. Q4 2015 were down 3.2% and electricity prices were down 2.8% over the same period.

Sixty-six Transition Year students from St Vincent’s school finished off their year in style with a fantastic four day trip to the Spanish capital of Madrid.

The jam-packed schedule included a tour of Bernabéu stadium, home to Real Madrid who recently won the UEFA Champions League and a must for soccer fans along with a walking tour of the beautiful medieval city of Toledo.

A surprising highlight of the trip was a guided tour of the 24,000 seater Las Ventas bullring, which hosts bullfights every night in May. This historical and often controversial event remains a huge part of

Spanish culture and was a fascinating visit for the girls and teachers.

A day spent in Warner Brothers theme park got adrenaline racing on some of the more hair-raising rides, while

shopping in the centre of Madrid naturally caught their attention as well, and group leader Jacinta Monaghan was delighted with how the trip went.

“Madrid is a great city for a school trip,

with an interesting mix of culture and entertainment. It was a wonderful way for the students to end what was a busy successful year for Transition Year in St Vincent’s school”, she stated.

Banned from road for two years A man who pleaded guilty to a drink driving charge was disqualified for two years at Dundalk District Court. Sean Flynn of 29 Woodville Manor, Tom Bellew Avenue, Dundalk, was stopped by Gardai on November 2 last year and a breath test revealed he was over the limit for driving.

Solicitor, Frank McDonnell, stated that the 24-year-old bought a cheap car but insurance was beyond his capacity.

He added that Mr Flynn was not a drinker by habit but he did have drink on that occasion.

Mr McDonnell stated that a disqualifiction would have

consequences for him as he is the father of a child who doesn’t live with him.

Judge Conall Gibbons imposed a €250 fine in relation to drink driving along with the two-year ban, and in relation to the no insurance charge he fined the defendant €150 and disqualified for one year.

Club allay fears over Friary Field re-development

A Pearse Park resident has expressed concerns over upcoming redevelopments in the Friary field in Dundalk.

St Dominics Football Club play their games in the Friary Field opposite the side entrance to the old Harp brewery. The field is owned by the council but is leased by the Friary school who let St Dominics use it as a home venue

people in the area have expressed concerns with plans to build a new fence around the Friary field and close the field off to the public. “”The field is an amenity to the local area and people have used it for generations. It’s a community field for people of the area and for the children of the Friary school.

I know that a 150 year lease was signed in 1957 by the Friary school and it

The club will shortly erect a brand new fence around the whole field and although there are no plans initially to close access to members of the public a club official has stated that the ideal scenario would be to keep the gate locked and come to an arrangement with Pearse Park residents who could be given a key.

The Pearse Park resident claimed that many

“In recent years we’ve seen the Fair Green, the Polo field and the De La Salle field all fenced off leaving the Friary field as the last piece of greenery open in the town area. We are adamant that the friary field will not be locked up and we will be watching with keen interest what St Dominics FC plan to

do with their redevelopments of the field,” stated the concerned Pearse Park resident.

John Derry, a coach with St Dominics Football Club confirmed that the club were planning on redeveloping the Friary Field which will include drainage works as well as erecting a brand new fence.

“We are currently fundraising and we plan to upgrade the Friary field in

the coming months. There will be a fence around the whole field to try and limit the amount of people coming in and making a mess of the field. We as a club have been maintaining this field for years and it is our members who have been cleaning up dog fouling, empty beer cans and used needles

from drug addicts.

“We have no plans at the moment to close the gate but ideally we would like to limit access to the field and if anybody in Pearse Park has issues with that we would be glad to sit down and talk to them and try and come to some sort of an arrangement whereby a

representative of the area could have a key to the gate.

“The bottom line is we have a lot of children playing in the field and we want to ensure they are kept safe and make sure the field is in decent condition for them,” stated John.

The student council from CBS Primary School, Chapel Street, visited the County Council offices in Dundalk. While there, they visited the Council Chamber and had a presentation by Susan Deery of Louth County Council. They heard about the services provided by the council and took part in a questions and answers with Susan. It was an informative and fun event which the CBS pupils look forward to every year. They were accompanied by teachers Niamh Corcoran and Maria Doyle, who is also a Councillor on Louth County Council.

Caolan Rafferty shows his quality once again CAOLAN Rafferty enhanced his growing reputation as one of the top amateur golfers in Ireland with a great run at the British Amateur Championship in Wales last week.

He was leading Irish qualifier in strokeplay qualifying after shooting a level par 71 at Royal Portcawl in Round 1 and a two over par 73 in Round 2 at Pyle & Kenfig to finish tied for 20th place.

Tom Lanigan (21) was the winner of the Wednesday Open Singles Stableford with a

score of 39pts which was one better than Niall Jackson (9) and Aidan O’Mahony (17).

Category winners were Paul Matthews (11), Andrew Coburn (13) and Ross Quigley (22).

Oisin Conroy (16) took the Juvenile Prize with an excellent score of 42pts.

The club hosted regional qualifying in the Leinster section of the Jimmy Bruen Shield with 16 clubs joining the home team for the strokeplay qualifying on Saturday.

Balbriggan (333) and Laytown & Bettystown (335) took the first three places with Hollywood Lakes just edging out Dundalk on countback after both returned scores of 335.

The top four met on Sunday morning for the semi-finals with Greenore beating Hollywood Lakes 4-1 while Laytown & Bettystown beat Balbriggan 3-2.

In the final on Sunday afternoon, Greenore beat Laytown & Bettystown to move forward to the next stage of the competition.

CúChulainn archers aiming for glory CúChulainn Archers of Hale Street, Ardee have had a very successful two weeks. Starting last Sunday week at the All Ireland Series Tournament in Belfast where Éamonn Rogers took the Gold Medal and then on Wednesday the presentation to Ann Marie Murray of the Sports Star of the year Award for the month of February. Éamonn and Ann Marie along with club members Christina O’Sullivan, Deirdre Rogers, and John Keenan travelled to Wexford for the Enniscorthy 3D Cham-

pionships.

While CúChulainn Archers is primarily a Target Archery Club, the members like to try other forms of the sport as well.

This 3D Field Archery competition was a first attempt for Christina and she proved to be a natural by taking the Irish Senior Female Record on first day, and breaking it again on the second day.

Once food waste has been segregated, the regulations require the householder to ensure that the segregated food waste is either: • • •

In addition, this legislation stipulates that the householder shall not deposit food waste in the residual waste bin (i.e. black bin). Any person who contravenes these regulations is guilty of an offence.

The Dunleer Tidy Towns had a very successful day at the Duck Derby held on the White River in Dunleer recently. There were 33 heats leading to 4 semi- finals and 8 participants in the Final.

The winners of the Dunleer Duck Derby were as follows: 1st Place Trophy and €100Paula King Woodlands Dunleer; 2nd Prize Trophy and €50 – Michael Callaghan Woodlands, Dunleer; 3rd Prize Trophy and €25 – Noel Torris, Lawlesstown, Dunleer The weather was very good for the occasion with lots of families attending and side shows for both Adults and children. This is just one of a number of fundraising events held each year to improve Dunleer for residents and visitors.

One of the ongoing projects at present in collaboration with the Historical Society in Dunleer is to map the graves and gravestones in the Church of Ireland at Main Street, Dunleer.

Some of the graves are over 500 years old and show the names of people in the area hundreds of years ago. A tour of the graveyard will be arranged by the Historical Society when completed.

“The Vice President has often spoken about the pride he has in his Irish roots and we are delighted that he has decided to visit Cooley as part of his Irish trip.

There are 19 or 20 coming along including many members of Joe’s family,” stated Peter.

“From what I gather the Bidens are planning to keep the visit low key so there will not be the huge fanfare that you might expect from such an important figure in world politics. He is related to Lily Finnegan so I would imagine that he will be visiting the pub whilst he is here.

Louth will be well represented at this year’s Rose of Tralee festival with two men from the Wee County qualifying from boot camp to become official Rose escorts for the 2016 Rose of Tralee International Festival.

Niall Brennan (23) and Shane Quigley (30) were among the 65 men who will be the Rose Escorts to 65 Roses taking part in this year’s extended festival from August 17 to 23 in Tralee.

Funky Feet set to represent Ireland

Local dance school ‘Funky Feet’ have set their sights on gold as they are getting ready to take on 63 other countries at the World Championships of Performing Arts in Long Beach, California this July.

Under the direction of Stacey Murnaghan, the proud founder of Funky Feet, she will be bringing seven dancers from the school to compete alongside the rest of

Team Ireland.

The Dundalk dancers, aged between 17 to 25 years will perform six different routines in a range of categories from Musical Theatre to Hip Hop to Contemporary with the hopes that it will land them a spot in the grand final.

With only a few weeks to go until the group jet off they will be hosting a number of fundraising events in the hopes that the public

will get behind and support them in order to go and do our town and country proud. One of which will be a family fun day taking place in the Ramada Hotel June 26 from 3pm to 5pm. Call to support walk for The Birches

A walk to raise funds for The Birches Alzheimers centre in Dundalk will take place on Sunday June 26 in Ravensdale.

All are invited to take part in this fun family occasion with walks to suit all levels of fitness, while the day will also feature a barbecue and entertainment in The Lumpers pub afterwards.

The event is also designed to raise awareness of Alzheimers and dementia which are on the increase, and will help highlight the work done by The Birches in helping people deal with the issues that result.

This is the third year of the event and the organisers are

hoping that people for the local community will lend their support.

The cost of the walk and barbecue is just €20 and for those who just want to attend the barbecue from approximately 3pm the price is €10.

Registration will take place at The Lumpers at 10.15am on Sunday with the walks starting at 11am. There will be walks to suit all, including children and with support staff from The Birches taking part, families are encouraged to bring along relatives currently suffering from dementia.

The centre depends on the local community for the financial support to continue its services with only 35 per cent of their funding coming from the State.

The remainder comes from fundraising projects within the community and as a result the organisers are asking people to support the walk on Sunday.

Man had too much to drink

A man who had too much to drink the day after he had lost a friend was fined €100 at Dundalk District Court when he pleaded guilty to a public order charge.

Daniel Dundon of 369 Beechmount Drive, Cox’s Demesne, Dundalk, was observed by Gardai on Bridge St on May 23 this year. There was a strong smell of alcohol and he was unable to hold a conversation and barely able to stand up.

The defence solicitor stated that the defendant had lost a friend the previous day and overdid it.

He apologised to the Gardai and any members of the public he may have offended, while he was conscious of the fact that he needed to stay away from drink.

The solicitor added that Mr Dundon, who is unemployed, has the responsibility of minding his sister’s two children.

Man was wild on drink but avoids a conviction A MAN who was described as being wild on drink and was abusive to Gardai during a stag party in Carlingford escaped a conviction after agreeing to pay €1,000 to the Garda Benevolent Fund.

Adrian O’Neill of 24 Aghlish Road, Dromore, Co Tyrone, was told by Judge Conall Gibbons that although he felt a conviction was appropriate in this case, he believed that justice would be best served by a contribution to the fund.

“I know it is crude and gives the wrong message that somebody can walk into court with money and walk out with a clean record.

“That is the problem I have

with this approach but on rare occasions the rule of justice is best served.

“People are entitled to go about their business without meeting the likes of Mr O’Neill on a night out.

“I would have sympathy with the Gardai in trying to deal with somebody like this”, added Judge Gibbons who pointed out that drinking was no excuse for such behaviour.

“I see the consumption of alcohol as an aggravating factor, not a mitigating factor, as it is a voluntary act”, he added.

The court heard that on May 7 this year, Gardai attended Newry St in Carlingford where a

number of males had refused to leave the entrance to a bar. Mr O’Neill was uncooperative and abusive to Gardai, with Insp Martin Beggy describing him as ‘wild on drink’.

Solicitor, Conor MacGuill, agreed that drink had been the problem and remarked that not everyone was fortunate to have a friend who would take them away from a situation.

He added that the 28-year-old labourer was inappropriate in his response after having too much to drink.

Judge Gibbons dismissed the three public order charges under the Probation Act after the €1,000 was paid to court.

There was a great turnout at the Muirhevnamór Community Centre on Friday last when parents and local organisations gathered at an Incredible Years information session.

The event which was organised by the newly established South Dundalk Area Co-ordination Team provided the opportunity for the whole community to come together and find out more about the Incredible Years suite of programmes available through The Genesis Programme.

Genesis is working to improve children’s futures

At a conference in Dundalk Institute of Technology over 200 delegates heard how agencies in Louth have come together to break down barriers and take a truly holistic approach to childhood well-being and family support.

The Genesis Programme brings together over 50 organisations working with children and families and in collaboration with Louth Children & Young People’s Services Committee (Louth CYPSC), a new roadmap for supporting children’s development in Ireland has been developed.

Ireland has the 3rd lowest spend on pre-primary education of all 31 OCED countries. This makes the collaborative work between agencies to care for and protect children’s development all the more important. Schools, community groups, health services and other organisations such as psychology and mental health services and the Department of Social Protection work collaboratively to identify children and families at risk, provide supports to parents and children and try to prevent children falling behind or into social disadvantage.

Not a sufficient reason to avoid road ban A man was told that having to visit his parents in Cavan was not sufficient reason to avoid a driving ban after he pleaded guilty to a charge of driving without insurance.

Seamus McDermott of 21 Woodville Manor, Tom Bellew Ave, Dundalk, told Dundalk District Court that he would

now have to get a bus to Dublin and another bus to Cavan in order to see his parents.

However, Judge Conall Gibbons stated that this did not constitute a special reason and he imposed a ban of one year on the defendant.

The court heard that on December 23, 2015, Gardai

observed a car with dipped headlights not working. When they spoke to the driver they noticed the car had no insurance disc. The car was seized and it was stated that documents were not produced.

Defence solicitor, Ciaran Hughes, stated that his client, who had one previous con-

viction for drink driving, was driving his partner’s car and although he knew it wasn’t taxed, he thought he was insured. He added that Mr McDermott, who works in PayPal, was travelling to see his parents before Christmas. The solicitor pointed out that the defendant needed his licence

to visit his parents as they relied on him.

Judge Gibbons stated that this was not a sufficient reason and he imposed a €350 fine and one year ban in respect of no insurance. On the no tax charge he fined the defendant €150, taking other matters into account.

Tara performs in Germany on her 30th birthday Local singer, Tara Erraught, celebrated her 30th birthday with the help of family and friends who travelled to Germany to see her perform at the opening of ‘Figaro’ at the Munich State Opera House.

A group of 30, including Tara’s parents, sister, grandparents, friends and members of the Marist Choir, flow over for the occasion.

They were given a tour of the venue which comprises the third largest stage in Europe.

Stephen Kilcommins and Robbie Callan of Dundalk Team Torres were awarded prestigious blue belts by national Chief Instructor Sebastiao Torres.

Seventeen members of the team made the short trek down to Newry, to the headquarters of

Team Torres in Ireland, for national team training and testing.

At the end of the training a small number of individuals from the various Team Torres cubs throughout Ireland were awarded the exalted rank of Blue Belt with Dundalk.

Cuchulainn Cyclying club has been very active on the leisure front with ten ridesrs from the club taking part in the recent Wicklow 200.

On the same day the club had over 40 riders take part in the shorter 100km Kevin Bell Repatriation Trust Cycle.

Held on local roads it also featured a section in the Cooley Mountains to ensure all those finished had had a hard day in the saddle.

The cycling league continued with Dunleer rider Andrew McAffee of White River Wheelers claiming victory from Ardee CC’s Patrick Gorman.

In race 2 Cuchullainn CC had a clean sweep of the podium, with Mickey Laverty taking a fine win ahead of Brian Grogan and Niall Clerkin in second and third respectively. Junior rider Lorcan Kilkenny took fourth. The next round is through Carrickmacross, Ardee and back into Dundalk.
