Two people were lucky to escape uninjured after a petrol bomb was thrown through the window of their house in Muirhevnamor on Sunday evening. The attack, which was described by Sinn Fein councillor Ruairí O’Mhurchu as reckless, saw the petrol bomb thrown through the front window. There were two occupants in the house at the time and investigations are ongoing. Cllr O’Mhurchu condemned the violent act while calling for an increase in resources locally to tackle violent crime and drug related activities. “This is an attack in a busy housing estate and there can be no justification whatsoev-

We’ve seen what has been happening in Drogheda over the last number of months and how it has escalated and we need to get on top of this before it happens here too. “There have been numerous attacks by those involved in the sale and supply of illegal drugs on people, homes and property across Louth and it’s got to the point that people in some areas are living in fear due to the indiscriminate and reckless nature of these attacks,” explained Rory. “Individuals and members of their families are being at See Page 2

More gold for Dundalk’s golden girl of cycling By Paul Byrne

Dundalk’s golden girl of cycling added another two medals to her collection at the Para-cycling Road World Cup in Belgium. Jenkinstown’s Eve McCrystal along with her tandem partner Katie Dunlevy cemented their status as one of the best

pairs in world cycling as they won both the tandem time-trial and the road race over the weekend. The duo have become masters of their craft since first racing together in 2013 and have now won six world championship gold as well as a gold and silver in the RIO Paraylmpics

three years ago. Eve and Katie began their latest World Championships campaign last Friday afternoon in Ostend, Belgium. They took part in the time-trial in the women’s B category and topped the podium ahead of the New Zealand team in second and Great Britain in third. They followed up that success with another gold medal winning performance in the road race on Sunday finishing ahead of the same duo but with the Great British team finishing in the silver medal posi-

tion this time around. In Para-cycling the stoker (Katie George) is the rider with the visual impairment sitting on the back of the bike, with the pilot (Eve) steering the bike. Both Eve and Katie have been the dominant force on the road in recent years and they are looking in good shape going into 2020 which will see the duo travel to Tokyo for the Paralympics. Speaking after the time trial success on Friday Eve posted to her social media to thank

their coach for getting them ready for the big race. “Kicking off the season with gold in the TT at the World Cup in Ostend Belgium. Did not know how today was going to go to be honest and we had to dig very deep for this. It’s our first Time Trial since the World Championships last year so it really was going into the unknown with fitness etc. As always thanks to our coach who tells us what to do and we do it. We’re good like that!,” stated Eve. Eve McCrystal and Katie-George Dunlevy celebrate

timidation and one of the main things that was discussed was the need for extra Gardaí and for people in the community to help Gardaí stop these criminals. “Recently we had an additional 25 Gardaí assigned to Drogheda and we have asked that these extra resources will be made permanent. “We also need to increase the staffing levels of the Drugs and Organised Crime Unit in Louth to ensure adequate staff in Dundalk, Drogheda and Mid Louth. “SThere is a need

for a well-resourced, multi-agency approach bringing together all of the stake-holders in the state, community and voluntary sectors to tackle the scourge of drugs and its associated health and criminal is-

sues. “I will continue to lobby for additional funding to be provided to Louth Gardaí to combat this very real and dangerous threat,” concluded Cllr O’Mhurchú.

Call to extend Greenway from Carlingford to Dundalk

Erin McGreehan Local Election Candidate for Dundalk Carlingford has called for work to start on the feasibility of extending the greenway from Carlingford to Dundalk and further afield. Ms McGreehan stated: “We have a vast and rich heritage of beautiful landscape, history and biodiversity in our area; a greenway extension is one way of enhancing the growth potential of our region.” “The economic and ecological benefits of greenways are clear with a quarter of million people using Mayo’s Great Western Greenway annually. This has resulted in creating 200 jobs in areas such as guided walks, bike

rentals, cafes, taxis and hotels. McGreehan states that this is a very beneficial opportunity for our local economy and we must take advantage of it,” added Erin “Greenways have become an exceptionally innovative way to develop Irish tourism, providing an attractive means to open up access to the countryside, stimulating employment opportunities and encouraging more sustainable travel. Mayo’s Greenway was a test case and in its first year of operation had 80,000 visitors who spent €7 million. “The Carlingford Omeath Greenway has been hugely successful, with people young and old, locals and visitors alike using

it and enjoying the scenic views it has to offer. It has undoubtedly increased quality of life in the community and has consequently attracted new business. The planned extension from Omeath to Newry will create 10.1km of a new cross-border greenway, linking Newry City and Carlingford,” she added “We need to look further, we can potentially connect Newry and Dundalk. It is time we get working on funding the feasibility. This is the way forward. We need to be ahead of the curve to start using the beauty and history in a sustainable way that will benefit our communities and our ecology.” John Morgan presenting a cheque for €650, to the Irish Association of Lourdes Volunteers (IALV), proceeds of John’s coffee morning on Easter Monday. John raised an amazing €1,300 and divided all proceeds between IALV and the Louth Branch of Cerebral Palsy. Pictured are John with IALV members Beverley Carolan, Geraldine Quinn and Siobhan Rothwell. Dundalk swimmers take on Leinster’s best

A total of ten members of Dundalk Swim Club competed in the Leinster Division 2 Championship last Sunday May 5 at the National Aquatic Centre in Dublin, the home of Irish Swimming. Dundalk swimmers put in some fine performances at the event which culminated in the Swimming Club’s Girls 11&Over relay team securing a silver medal with an impressive 200m Medley Relay time of 2.38.11. The relay team consisted of Sadhbh Mullen, Amy McEvoy, Katie Farrell and finally Faye O’Rourke who took the team home with a blistering final 50m Freestyle leg of 33.52. In the morning session

Bronagh Harmon and Amelie Friel swam first for Dundalk taking 5 seconds and 1 seconds respectively off their Personal Best (PB) times in the 100m Backstroke 11-12 Age Group, while Sadhbh Mullen and Faye O’Rourke both finished in the top 5 in the 100m Backstroke 13-14 Age Group and Amy McEvoy knocked 14 seconds off her PB. Matthew Messin won the club’s first medal of the day securing Bronze in the Boys 100m Breaststroke 11-12 Age Group while Cedric Saavedra shaved 4 seconds off his PB in the same event. Emilia Rutkowska also secured a PB in the 100m Freestyle. Amy McEvoy took home

a second bronze for Dundalk Swim Club when she posted a 3.23.46 PB in the 200m Breaststroke 13-14 Age Group. In the afternoon session opener, Bronagh Harmon and Katie Farrell both scored PBs in the 200m Freestyle as did Cedric Saavedra in the 100m Back. In the 100m Breaststroke Amy McEvoy missed out on a second Bronze by 0.69 of a second while Bronagh secured her third PB of the day. Next, Katie Farrell was in action in the 100m Fly event knocking 10 seconds off her PB. Sadhbh Mullen narrowly missed out on a medal for the second time in the day when

she posted a PB in the 200m Individual Medley 13-14 Age Group. Faye, Katie and Amy also performed well with Dundalk Swimming Club taking four of the top 10 places. No surprise then that this quartet followed up that success by taking the Silver medal in the 200m Medley Relay. Meanwhile on the other side of the city, Junior club members Hugo Friel and Emily Coyle were competing at the Glenalbyn Swim Club gala in South County Dublin. Hugo won a Gold, Silver and Bronze in his 25m freestyle, 25m butterfly and 100m IM events while Emily secured PBs in her events across the day.

Green Party leader, Eamon Ryan TD, joined Dundalk candidates Marianne Butler and Eoin Daly on the canvas in Willow Grove and Coxes Demesne last Thursday and got up to speed on some of the local issues that are concerning voters ahead of Friday’s elections. Deputy Ryan was in Dundalk as a Guest Speaker of Engineers Ireland who were hosting their Annual Convention at DkIT. There he outlined to an almost full Whittaker Theatre, the immense scale of the challenge faced by the country to transition to a zero carbon by 2050 but also of the opportunities it offers. Citing several great local engineering companies already building the solutions and selling to the world, Ryan suggested that Dundalk , with its engineering tradition and Dkit programmes could be Ireland’s “renewable energy hotspot.”

NOVENA For a financial crisis… Here is a prayer for your money emergency. The traditional way to petition Saint Expedite is to take a white and a green candle; carve your name on them lengthwise. Light the candles and continue lighting the candles and praying to him until you receive his answer. Have faith and do not doubt his power or willingness to help you. Pray to Saint Expedite I call forth the Power and the presence of St. Expedite in my time of financial trouble. I offer my body, heart, mind and soul upon your alter of light. I have faith and trust and complete confidence that you will be my strength in this time of need. Quickly come to my assistance. Bring to me… (Clearly express what you want, and ask him to find a way to get it to you). My financial need is urgent. Be my Light and Guide in this situation so that I may live with peace, love, prosperity and abundance and in the Praise of God. Amen B.D.

There were some excellent performances both on the track and in the field at the recent Louth Juvenile Championships at the Bush track. Dunleer’s Karlis Kaugars was particularly impressive as he set new championship best performances in the U15 Boys’ High Jump (1.60m), Shot Putt (14.40m) and Javelin (52.64m). For good measure, he also won the Long Jump title with a leap of 5.22m The High Jump also saw CBPs from Blackrock’s Eoghan Smyth in the U19 Boys’ (1.85m), Tara O’Connor of Dundalk St Gerard’s in the U13 Girls’ (1.53m) and Glenmore’s Elliott Nichols in the U12 Boys’ (1.25m). The other CBPs rewritten at the Cooley venue were by Blackrock’s Aoibhín McMahon in the U17 Girls’ Javelin (40.64m), Enya Silkena of Dundalk St Gerard’s in the U13 Girls’ Javelin (30.01m) and Boyne’s Oliver Carolan in the U12 Boys’ Long Jump (4.16m). On the track, sprint doubles in the 100m and 200m were recorded by Blackrock girls Hannah Reilly (U19) and Kirsten Doherty (U17), with Reilly also winning the 100m Hurdles and Long Jump (4.56m). In the U16 sprints, there were also double victories for Leon King Abor of Boyne in the boys’ events and Sophie Gartland, running in the colours of Ace, in the girls’. Dundealgan’s Israel Olatunde is focussing on the shorter sprint this year and he enjoyed a very impressive victory in the U19 Boys’ 100m. Dunleer pair Finn Reilly and Ciara Reilly both excelled over one lap to take the U19 400m titles, recording time of 52.9 and 1:03.5 respectively. The U19 Boys’ 800m saw Cormac Canning of Drogheda & District strike gold with a fine 2:01.2 clocking. Abbie Sheridan of Ardee and District was equally impressive in winning the U19 Girls’ 800m. Niamh Brady of St Peter’s was the fastest across all age groups in the girls’ 1500m, despite being only in the U15 category.

One in twelve victim of attempted car theft within the past 5 years Almost one in 12 Irish motorists have had their vehicles damaged as a result of theft or attempted theft within the past 5 years, a recent survey has found. In response to an AA Car Insurance survey of over 3,000 Irish motorists, 8.31% of respondents stated that damage had been caused to their vehicle as a result of a theft attempt during the last 5 years. The survey also found that a further 30.59% of motorists had been the victim of attempted car theft at some point in their driving history but over 5 years ago. “While it does appear that car thefts or attempted breakins are occurring less now than they may have been in the past, it remains a problem that hasn’t truly gone away. Modern technology certainly makes stealing a car more challenging, but

unfortunately we do still hear of new and innovative methods being used by those trying to steal vehicles,” Conor Faughnan, AA Director of Consumer Affairs stated. “To help minimise the risk of a car theft, we would encourage motorists to ensure they keep their keys in a discreet, secure place when the car isn’t in use. The survey also found that the repair costs faced by motorists who have had their car stolen or broken into can quickly add up, with 1 in 5 of those affected having to spend between €500 and €1000 on repairs. Of those who indicated they had been the victim of a car theft or break-in, 21.92% stated that the cost of repairing the damage caused to their car was between €250 and €500, with 20.20% facing a repair bill of between €500 and €1000. At the more severe

end of the scale, 5.67% stated that the total cost of the repair work exceeded €2000, while 6.65% were never successful in recovering the vehicle. “Quite often when we discuss car break-ins, it’s not so much a case of the car being the target but more a case of someone hoping to steal valuable items in the car, such as a wallet, handbag or a phone. Whenever leaving your car unattended it’s important not only that you lock up, but that you double check you’re not leaving any small, valuable items in plain sight,” Faughnan added. “While your insurance may include cover for personal belongings in your vehicle if they are stolen or damaged during an attempted break-in, it’s important that you store these items away carefully to avoid the risk of your claim being refused.”
