Louth is back on the tourism map after a red faced apology from Failte Ireland who had initially omitted the Land of Legend’s from their Ireland’s Ancient East tourism initiative.

The long awaited announcement of ‘Ireland’s Ancient East’ (The East Coast’s version of the Wild Atlantic Way), the Government’s newest tourism initiative geared to attract an extra 600,000 visitors to the island, was finally unveiled this week at Meitheal – Ireland’s top tour operator trade conference but much to the annoyance of people around the county, most of Co Louth was not on the map.

The catchline which introduced the initia-

tive stated that Ireland’s Ancient East would offer visitors a “relaxing journey of discovery” stretching from Newgrange through the Midlands and southeast to Cork. This resulted in plenty of confused, concerned and angry responses from locals who had been led to believe that Louth would be included in the scheme.

Thankfully within 36 hours the situation was resolved and Fáilte Ireland official Gary Breen, made a humble apology to the trade at the Dundalk Chamber of Commerce Tourism Conference in The Crowne Plaza Hotel, Dundalk.

“Apologies on behalf of Fáilte Ireland.

It was not our intention to exclude any part of Ireland’s rich heritage,

least of all Louth’s. It is regrettable that we scored a PR own goal in Louth yesterday.” explained Gary.

Cooley Peninsula Tourism Officer Frances Taylor revealed that the initial announcement came as a shock.

“The last few days has been a rollercoaster for both myself and Dundalk Tourism Officer, Sinead Roche.

“On hearing the official announcement, we acted very swiftly and strongly to find out what happened and ensure that our area was included as promised to us.

“We are satisfied that the situation is now clarified by Fáilte Ireland’s official press release which states that Louth is definitely a strong player in the initiative

and its recognition that our product directly complements the pillars of new region - Ancient Ireland, Early Christian Ireland, Medieval Ireland and Anglo Ireland.

“It doesn’t serve to dwell on what happened but move forward to ensure a strong position within this new region.

It is essential that the tourism sector works together and gets in behind it”, concluded Frances.

Dundalk’s Tourist Officer Sinead Roche echoed Frances’ sentiments noting that she was happy that Failte Ireland had quickly resolved what was an embarrassing own goal.

“Louth has so much to offer and it came as a great shock to us when we seen the initial roll out to the scheme.

However, thankfully Failte Ireland have gone a long way to righting their wrongs and I am happy they are getting back on track this time with Louth involved.

“Irrespective of the PR fiasco I hope that all the tourism trade can

get behind this initiative and make sure it can be as successful as it can possibly be. We have a chance to show people our county and we must ensure that Louth stays at the forefront of this initiative”, noted Sinead.

Huge crowds gather for Patsy Kelly run

Over 800 runners, joggers and walkers made the trip ‘around the town’ on Saturday evening when they took part in the fourth annual Patsy Kelly 5K. The event, organised

by Clan na Gael GFC and North East Runners to commemorate Patsy Kelly who was a prominent member of both

Patsy Kelly’s wife, Marie, and grandchildren, Oisin Keating and Aine Maguire, at the start of the Patsy Kelly 5k

clubs, has grown into the biggest 5K outside Dublin and according to organiser, Paul Gray, it was another great success.

“Thankfully everything went well on the night, including the weather which was a great bonus. In total we had 880 registered, with 815 completing the 5K

on Saturday which was a great response.

“They are coming from all over, including Omagh, Dublin, Drogheda, Monaghan and I even saw one athlete with a West Limerick AC top, so the word is spreading fast”, explained Paul.

“Having said that, it is still a great local

event with a huge response from the area. I think what attracts people is the fact that it is a relatively fast course with many people recording personal bests, while athletes love the fact that there are so many spectators along the route cheering them on”, he continued.

Much of the success of the event is down to the effort put in by the organising clubs with Paul praising those who helped out.

“Unfortunately our senior players couldn’t take part in the run because they had a game the next day, but they all put in an effort in the days beforehand, while we had the ladies committee working hard making sandwiches, the ladies team helping out with the registration and the girls teams giving a hand with the back packs, and club members acting as stewards”, he continued.

The club also expressed their thanks to Black and White Living for their sponsorship and to the residents of the area for their cooperation.

A MAN in his 50s has been arrested in connection with the investigation into the disappearance of Ciara Breen and was detained at Drogheda Garda Station.

The arrest was made early yesterday (morning) and comes in the wake of the renewed appeal for information launched by Gardai before Christmas.

Ciara Breen was 17 years old when she went missing from her home at Bachelors Walke, Dundalk on February 13, 1997.

It is thought she sneaked out of her bedroom window to meet up with someone while her mother slept but tragically she never made it back home. Her mother Bernadette believes her only child was killed.

Despite numerous appeals and interviews with 128 people, Ciara has never been found. A number

of searches were carried out around Dundalk, and a local man was questioned about her disappearance but never charged.

However Gardai remained convinced that the answer to this case lies in Dundalk and as a result Detective Inspector Pat Marry made a renewed appeal in November.

At that time, Det Insp Marry called on people to “do the right thing” and stated: “We are appealing to any

of Ciara’s friends who were young and maybe a bit impressionable or scared at the time to come forward and do the right thing. These girls are older now and many have children of their own so they will know the heartache Ciara’s mother must be feeling having lost her daughter”.

The case also featured on RTE’s Crimecall and as a result of the appeal, Gardai received numerous calls and an anonymous letter was sent to the investigating team.

Investigating officers are appealing to anyone who may have information in relation to Ciara’s disappearance or who may have seen her on the night/morning of her disappearance to contact Dundalk Garda Station on 042-9388400, the Garda Confidential Line 1-800666-111 or any Garda Station.

Debaters eye All-Ireland glory

St Vincent’s debating team are on course for All Ireland glory after they were crowned Leinster champions in the prestigious Debating Science competition in DCU. 2015 has been hugely successful for the talented St Vincent’s team having also emerged victorious in the provincial final of the Knights of St. Columbanus Public Speaking Competition recently.

Beating off stiff competition from schools across the province, Ciara McLoughlin, Isobel Jones and Aoife O’Malley will go forward to the national finals in the Royal College of Surgeons on April 29 where they will propose the motion that the potential benefits of using embryonic stem cells to develop new medical treatments mean we have a moral obligation to support such research.

Sue preparing for 1600km kayak trek around Ireland

However, for one teacher that will not be the case as she plans to spend her holidays kayaking around Ireland in aid of charity.

Sue Honan, a geography teacher and St Marys College, Dundalk, is undertaking the 1,600km trek to raise funds for the Headstrong charity, and although she accepts that it is a huge task, she is really looking forward to the challenge which she will undertake with Sonja Ewen.

While it may sound like a daunting challenge for most people, but for Sue the challenge, which will commence from Howth on June 6, ties in many aspects of her life.

“As a sea-kayak enthusiast and now an instructor, Sue has

seen a number of her friends complete this journey and inspired her to take on this personal challenge.

“It is a beautiful way to see Ireland and I am lucky to have the time. There is no guarantee that we will get around as it depends on the weather”, explained Sue who felt that having set her sights on the venture, that it would be a great way to raise funds for charity.

“Through a friend, I learned about the Headstrong organisation and their idea of a young person having ‘One Good Adult’ in their lives is similar to kayaking where you need a good partner with you.

“For many parents we are unaware of our young people’s inner lives and we often don’t have the necessary tools to cope with the challenges they face.

Their experiences are often different to what we grew up with.

“They live with the onslaught of the media with its un-reacha-

ble expectations of instant fame and success. It bears so little resemblance to real life and can promote feelings of failure”, she added.

“Also the fact that as a parent and teacher I am well aware of the pressures young people are under and that they need support. I suppose it ties in with a lot of aspects of my life, so hopefully it will all go well”, added Sue. “We expect that the trip will take around 50 days and that we will be travelling around 30km to 60km per day depending on conditions. Some of the most challenging areas include the currents on the North Antrim coast, Donegal Bay which is about 60km, Mizen Head and crossing the Shannon”, continued Drogheda based Sue who has been teaching in the Marist for 15 years.

However, it is not the time on the water that provides the only challenge, as accommodation

“We will be carrying tents and will plan on sleeping in remote areas and small islands, but it is physically demanding moving the kayaks on land. We will carry enough supplies for a week at a time and restock en route”, continued Sue who hopes for support along the way.

“We won’t be spending nights in B & Bs or anything like that but hopefully people can offer us accommodation, and perhaps a meal and a hot bath”, she explained while also adding that the pair would welcome any donations of equipment they will need for camping.

Mountain bike league commences Tuesday last (April 14th) saw the commencement of Cuchulainn’s 2015 Mountain Bike League in Bellurgan Park. Under the stewardship of Liam Burnes, 33 riders signed on for the first night of action.

From the flag drop, off road expert Aiden McDonald took the lead, which he continued to build upon over the three laps, to take the win from Andrew Baldwin in second and Niall O’Flaherty in third. The league will continue every Tuesday night over the summer.

This Thursday night (April 23) sees the start of the Bike Station Summer Cycling League.

The first night of racing will see the riders sign on at the Gerladines pitches in Haggardstown and race out to Dunleer and back.

On the open racing front, the weekend was a hive of activity for the club’s road racers.

On Saturday evening Colm Quinn took the first A2 rider in the main event, the 50km handicapped race.

On Sunday the main action was the Visit Nenagh Classic in the

Tipperary town. The 160km route featured seven categorised climbs and attracted all of Ireland’s top riders and a Dutch team.

Bryan McCrystal was fourth home in the gruelling race with Cuchulainn’s Liam Dolan not far behind in seventh.

Fire highlights issues of estates with empty houses

The lives of residents in estates around Dundalk are being made a misery due to the high volume of idle empty houses which are being targeted by vandals.

That’s according to Cllr.

Kevin Meenan who was speaking in the wake of a house fire in Doolargy Avenue in Muirhevnamor

which spread to a house next door causing a family of ten to be evacuated as the flames spread.

The blaze started at around 7pm on Friday evening in a deserted house in Doolargy Avenue which then spread to an occupied house next door as well as another unoccupied house two doors down.

Speaking in the aftermath of the fire Cllr Meen-

an urged council officials to do something about the high volume of unoccupied houses which are constantly being targeted by vandals.

“Yet again it seems that an innocent family have been caught up in the fallout of vandals targeting unoccupied houses to vandalise or set on fire. Muirhevnamor is full of empty derelict houses which are

being used as drug dens or targeted by vandals and it is not fair for anybody to have to live beside this”, noted Cllr. Meenan.

“Something needs to be done collectively to help these people. The longer the houses lie idle the more they are vandalised or set on fire which is a waste of resources as well as being a nightmare for residents who have to deal with these

disturbances”, he added.

“We have to figure out who is responsible for these derelict properties and who should be taking care of them rather than leaving them to the mercy of these vandals.”

The blaze took around four hours to be brought under control, with five units of the fire service attending from Dundalk, Dunleer and Drogheda.

Two adjoining houses were damaged by smoke during the fire but thankfully there were no injuries with two dogs also rescued.

Gardaí are investigating the cause of the blaze and are appealing for anyone with information to contact them at Dundalk Garda Station on 042 9335577 or the confidential line on 1800666111.

Congratulations to all members of Dundalk Karate who recently travelled to Ardee where they competed against numerous international teams and managed to return victorious.

Teams from all over Ireland, England and Scotland were in attendance and once members of Dundalk Karate took to the tatami matts, they never looked back.

First up to compete in her Individual Kata (form) category was Katie McNamara, who sailed through numerous rounds and was victorious in gaining the club’s first Silver Medal of the day.

Friends of Collon Church Ltd. was formed to restore the church to it’s former glory. The roof and ceiling is a major task and will cost in the region of €400,000 to repair. In a bid to raise funds, a garden party will be held in Collon House courtesy of John Dunne and Michael McMahon on Saturday May 23.

Ardee Concert Band will be performing while there will be refreshments, cake sales, children’s activities, a guided tour of the church and historic village walks.

Tickets are €15 (children free) and are available from Leonard Hatrick or any committee member.

Darts league is entering the crucial stages Action in the Dundalk Darts League continued with The Andrew McAlester Shield where Jackie’s Army were the victim of an upset when they travelled to Ferguson’s.

Unfortunately for Fergusons, they met a strong McEnteggarts in the next round and it was the Dundalk side who made the semi-finals. McEnteggarts will play the Avenue Eagles while the Commercial 1896 will play The Stags in what will be a repeat of the Divi-

sional Cup final.

With the team events coming close to conclusion the players from each division are looking at the divisional singles for glory.

The Premier title will see John Donnelly going in as some people’s favourite while Seamus Rice from the Stags would be a good bet for any man.

Ray Harte from the Commercial is another player with potential to cause upsets.

In the First Division Carl Thomas will be looking to defend his title but he will have stiff competition from the likes of Mickey Kelly from the Punters and Isaac Smith from Jackie’s The Division Two singles is wide open but last year’s winner Aidan Conroy is just ahead in the betting. Mark Flynn is playing well for the Commercial Hawks and Derek Morgan from the Stags White is well capable as are any of the Ferguson’s team.

The Third Division sees Fintan Callans players come in as unknown quantities to some. Paddy Shields of the Windmill is a strong favourite for this competition but Denise Coburn from Brady’s may have something to say about this The singles is played in four different venues: Premier singles - Commercial Club; Division One Singles Stags Head; Division Two - Windmill; Division Three - Malt House.

Fashion show to help St Vincent’s school library St Vincent’s Parents’ Council have been working tirelessly this year in an effort to raise funds to help equip the newly refurbished school library with over 4,000 new books.

One of the forthcoming events is a ‘Night Of Fashion’ which is to be held in The Crowne Plaza on Monday April 27 and features a wide selection of fashion from local retailers to suit all tastes. Malawi charity fundraising dinner Louth County Council Malawi Committee has launched the 2015 Chairman’s Charity Fundraising Dinner which will take place on Saturday May 23 in the Crowne Plaza Hotel.

The Malawi Fundraising Committee of Louth County Council has raised in excess of

€500,000 which goes directly to the funding of projects in the region of Malawi.

The Committee’s plan for 2015 is to fund the purchase of a basic cervical cancer screening machine for the region of Kassina and funding of this particular project will be high

Three Dundalk boxers prepare for World Championships

Dundalk boxers have once again shown they are punching above their weight with the news that three locals have been selected for the Ladies Irish team which travel to the World Junior Boxing Championships in Taipei next month.

Dealgan boxers Amy Broadhurst and Orla Garvey will be joined by Clann Naofa’s Shauna O’Callaghan as they take on the world’s best in Taipei next month. The fact that three of the 13 strong Irish team come from Dundalk shows just how successful the local coaching system is here in town.

Tony Broadhurst who is a coach in Dealgan boxing club in Marian Park was understandably delighted that two of his charges had been selected for the World Championships.

day evening that Orla Garvey (57kg Junior) and my daughter Amy Broadhurst (57kg Youth) were picked for the Irish team and we were all delighted with the news”, explained Tony.

“This is reward for all the hard work and effort both girls have put in over the last year to earn their spot on the team.

This will be Amy’s second World Championship having travelled to Bulgaria two years ago

History project to record cemetery plots Cooley Genealogical and Historical Society are undertaking a project to record plots at Boher and Grange cemeteries.

The purpose of this exercise is to find people who are not listed on the headstones. It is then up to the family concerned whether they would like them included in the Memorial Books.

Each plot will be numbered in the books with headstone for Boher and Grange Cemeteries. This will be linked to a plot number in Cill Mhuire where people can discern where their plot is and who their dead are.

The end result is to link up all families so that everybody is recorded especially the forgotten.

If the programme were finished, it would link each family and the process could be carried on for future generations where everyone could be recorded.

The three books could begin a process where everybody could be linked ‘almost by blood’ in the parish.

A template for all families plus memorabilia on how to record future generations for immediate family members and extended families will also be included. The plot numbers for Boher and Grange will inevitably lead back to Cill Mhuire.

The process will help in some small way to ameliorate the melancholy which prevails when people grow old and would like to remember their family in a tangible way.

It also gives people the opportunity and means to recognise those who have passed on in poorer times where families had not the means or support to commemorate their ancestors. Phone 0851833110 fr details.

Medals for Team Torres TWO members of the local BJJ club ‘TeamTorres’ travelled to Dublin at the weekend to compete in the ‘GrapplePalooza World Cup’ and did both themselves and their club proud when they earned podium positions in their respective divisions.

First up for the local club in the Lightweight division was up and coming fighter and Blackrock native Barry Quaile who stormed his way to the finals in convincing fashion with all of his wins coming by way of submission.

His team mate, and competition veteran, Dundalk man Andrew McGahon followed suit in the featherweight division in what proved to be a very tough stacked section to win all of his fights bar one to claim a hard earned bronze to add to his growing collection.

RCNE host Car Boot Sale

respond to Gardai on speeding

A driver had a speeding charge against him dismissed at Dundalk District Court after it emerged that Louth County Council had failed to contact Gardai in relation to speed signs on the stretch of road in question.

Barry McGuinness of 6 Barrack Mews, Dundalk, appeared in relation to an incident on June 2, 2014, when it was alleged that he exceeded a 60kph limit at Mullaharlin, Dundalk.

The defendant, who had the case adjourned on a previous occasion, stated that there were no signs at the location.

Inspector, Yvonne Murphy, stated that the Gardai had contacted Louth County Council in relation to the signs but they hadn’t received a response.

Judge Conall Gibbons, who heard that Mr McGuinness had taken two days off work to attend court, dismissed the case.

The Togher Theatre group are ready to hit the stage with their tenth production.

Play On’ directed by Debra Coyne, will be staged in Dillonstown Community Centre for three nights from Thursday April 23 to Saturday April 25 at 8pm.

The production of Rick Abbot’s creation, is a play within a play where an eccentric playwright keeps changing the plot and rewriting the scripts and is driving everyone mad.

The Togher Theatre Group was set up by Debra Coyne in 2009 when she gathered together people with a shared interest in music and drama.

Youthreach students from Louth and Meath took part in the seventh annual Spraoi Mór, a Youthreach talent show which is organised by Louth and Meath Education and training Board (LMETB). Success for Ardee band

Ardee Concert Youth and Senior Bands travelled to Cork on Saturday April 11 to take part in the Irish Association of Brass and Concert Bands 50th National Band Championships in the Cork School of Music.

The Youth band of 37 took to the stage to partake in Section 4 Concert to perform three pieces. They had great competition this year with six bands in their section and after their section was complete the adjudication got underway with Michael Ball.

Placing fourth, the band and their conductor John Gaynor where happy with the result as they knew themselves that they played really well and as a bonus they picked up two extra prizes. They collected the Larry Daly Memorial Cup for most promising band and the trophy for the Best Own Choice Piece of the section.

For many members of the youth band, this was their first ever time competing in any

Entering the Section last Sunday April 12 was their first ever time to perform in section 1 and without fail they took the title from their neighbours Drogheda Brass Band who received Best Own Choice piece of the Section.

Proud parents, Pauline and Brendan Byrne from Louth Village, made a lastminute dash ‘around the world’ to see their son, Ciaran, make his Australian Rules debut at the famous Melbourne Cricket Ground over the weekend.

It was a moment to savour for the Byrne family as the 20-year-old stepped out on to the MCG pitch to make his senior Carlton debut in front of 55,000 fans.

Ciaran came on just before the final quarter playing at half back alongside Laois’s Zack Tuohy mak-

ing a great impression as Carlton fought back before ultimately losing 105- 84.

The former Louth senior player, Ciaran, signed for Melbourne based Carlton less than two years ago and his impressive form for the Northern Blues (Carlton’s developmental squad) led to a call up last week for the senior squad who took on Essendon Bombers on Saturday afternoon.

Ciaran’s achievement was made even more special as proud parents Brendan and Pauline flew 16,000km to make sure they were on hand to see their son play his first ever senior AFL game.

As Ciaran explains he only found out the Tuesday before the game that he was going to make his debut and he was straight on to his parents who immediately started making arrangements to make sure they would be at the game.

“It really was an amazing feeling pulling on that navy blue jumper for the first time. Safe to say it was one of the best weeks of my life and to have my parents there just made it all the more special”, revealed Ciaran.

“I got the phone call Tuesday afternoon from the assistant coach Rob Wiley telling me I was called

up to the senior squad for round three against Essendon. I always felt I’d make my debut this year but I must admit I didn’t think it would come this soon into the season.

“It didn’t sink in until the day off the game when I was warming up in the Melbourne Cricket Ground two hours before the game commenced. The build up was crazy, so much hype and media but I tried to mentally prevent that from hindering my normal preparation”, explained the former Mochtas forward.

A Dundalk man is ready to hit the big screen after receiving news that his debut novel is to be turned into a film.

Mark Mulholland, published the very successful ‘A Mad and Wonderful Thing’ and the story caught the imagination of Parallel Films producers who wanted to bring the story to film.

To add to the excitement for Mark, it has been revealed that the movie will be co-produced

by legendary actor, Liam Neeson.

Mark, has been based in France with his family for ten years, but is well-known in Dundalk circles as the cofounder and former owner of Dundalk’s acclaimed Spirit Store and Beer Keeper.

Set amongst the streetscape and hinterland of Dundalk, ‘A Mad and Wonderful Thing’ is a story about cause, about why boys do the things they

do, about motivations and conflicts, about choices and costs.

The book created diverse reaction at the time and the author was naturally delighted with the latest development.

“The contract is very recent, just completed in the last days, and a major film deal for A Mad and Wonderful Thing is being announced at this week’s London Book Fair”, explained Mark.

“This is great news. It is, literally, a big deal. And it is the right deal with the right team.

We have had a lot of interest and had other options but Parallel Films and Liam Neeson bring elegance and gravitas to the production, and they bring knowhow. They also get it: they understand the fundamental thrust of the book.

“It was Liam who did most of the work on this and made the thing happen. And it was

Dundalk rugby celebrate league success Wheelie Bins

Dundalk defeated the Connemara all blacks 48-28 in the final game of the all Ireland junior league championship in Clifden on Saturday last. It was Dundalk’s final game in the series and having beaten both Instonians and Clonmel, Connemara were the final obstacle to Dundalk claiming the title of All-Ireland Junior League Champions to go along with their All Ireland Junior cup title.

While showing the opposition a lot of respect as Connacht champions few believed the westerners could pose a serious problem to Dundalk and after a few swift

early exchanges it was evident that Dundalk were by far the superior team.

After eight minutes Dundalk elected to scrum a quick ball from Thomas Campbell allowing out half Jonathan Williams to use his strength to break tackles and force his way over the line to score Dundalk’s opening try.

Although Connemara hit back with a try, it was only a temporary setback as the visitors continued to push forward and at the break were ahead by 26-13.

James McConnon, Jonathan Williams and Stephen McGee were among the try scorers, with

Ultan Murphy kicking conversions.

Dundalk continued to dominate in the second half as they brought in replacements and added further tries from Owen McNally, Ultan Murphy and Mike Bentley completed the comfortable win.

Having won all three games in the series Dundalk now claim the title of best junior club in Ireland, next week the stakes are higher when they play De La Salle Palmerstown in a knock-out game which could see Dundalk gain promotion to the All-Ireland league. The game is in Dublin on

The new SEAT Alhambra

The new SEAT Alhambra MPV will be available to order from the end of the May with the first vehicles arriving in the summer.

The new Alhambra is a revised model rather than an all-new car but there have been a number of important modifications. All of the revised petrol and diesel engine now meet Euro6 emissions and offer improved fuel

consumption figures.

There will be two diesel 2.0 TDI engines with the option of 150 PS or 184 PS power outputs; the 150 PS unit sees a 15 per cent deduction in consumption recording 57.6 mpg on the combined cycle with emissions of 130 g/km.

There will also be the option of a petrol 1.4 TSI unit delivering 150PS. All engines can be opted with the DSG

dual-clutch automatic transmission which offers a lift off coasting function to save fuel – i.e. take your foot off the accelerator and the engine decouples from the driven wheels.

On the tech front there will be the introduction of the SEAT Easy Connect infotainment systems with high resolution touch screens and faster processors – and better connectivity.

Safety now includes SEAT’s multi-collision brake system which ensures if driver cannot maintain braking after an accident the car will be brought to a halt.

There is the option of blind spot sensor to ensure side protection when changing lanes.

There is DCC (Dynamic Chassis Control) which controls the Alhambra’s dampers to match the driving conditions.

THE NEW KIA PICANTO

Details if the upgraded Kia Picanto have just been announced with re-styling, re-engineering and specification tweaks.

Power comes from the choice of two petrol engines, either a three-cylinder 1.0-litre unit developing 68bhp/95Nm via a five-speed manual gearbox or the 1.25-litre four-cylinder edition outputting 84bhp/121Nm with the option of either a five-speed manual or a four-speed automatic transmission, depending on model. The engines will become Euro6 compliant from autumn 2015 production.

The 1.0-litre engine records a combined fuel figure of 67.3 mpg with emissions of 99 g/ km although if you opt for the ISG stop/start models this improves to 68.9mpg and 95g/ km of CO2. The top speed is a respectable 95 mph with 0-60 taking 13.9 seconds.

The 1.25-litre fourcylinder version with the five-speed manual gearbox and standard ISG has fuel economy and emissions of 65.7mpg (2 grade) or 62.8mph (grades 3 and 4) with respective CO2 emissions of 100 and 106g/km, while with the four-speed automatic gearbox the figures are 53.3mpg and 125g/km (Picanto 2) or 50.4mpg and 130g/ km (Picanto 3). The

0-60mph times are 11.0 seconds for manual versions and 12.9 seconds for automatics, while the respective top speeds are 106 and 101mph.

The five-door model is available in six trims levels, ‘1’, ‘1 Air’, ‘SR7’, ‘2’, ‘3’ and the top of the range ‘4’, where the three-door comes in two trims, either the ‘1’ or ‘SR7’ edition.

Standard equipment on the Picanto 1 – and

the five-door Picanto 1 Air (air conditioning), a height-adjustable driver’s seat, a tiltadjustable steering column and MotorDriven Power Steering. In-car entertainment is provided by a standard RDS radio and CD player with MP3 compatibility and four speakers. There are front electric front windows, remote central locking, all-round height-adjustable head

restraints, tinted glass, headlight levelling and 60:40 split folding rear seats.

Safety equipment across the range comprises ABS brakes with Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD) and Emergency Brake Assist (BAS), Electronic Stability Control (ESC) with Vehicle Stability Management (VSM), Hill-start Assist Control (HAC) and six airbags.
