An Ardee man is lucky to still be alive following an accident in his workplace last Tuesday (March 13) which left him with multiple injuries.

23-year old Kevin Quirke from Ardee is currently living in Toronto, Canada with his girlfriend Katie O Heiligh and was working inside a metal cage testing the equipment on a building crane when the cage broke free from the crane and fell 20 feet to the ground. The impact left Kevin with a broken jaw in three places, a broken leg, a broken ankle and a major laceration to his neck. The accident has left Kevin struggling to speak and for the next couple of weeks he will only be able to eat through a syringe. He also has limited ability to move

Kevin’s boss in Toronto has set up a gofundme page to help buy a special wheelchair for his recovery as well as helping his parents get over to visit their son. Kevin’s girlfriend Katie thanked everybody who has helped the couple since Kevin’s accident last Tuesday.

“This happening so far away from the support of family is not easy for Kevin.

His boss set up this gofundme page to help with getting his parents over but also help us toward the cost of rental for wheelchair and special seats so he can shower during his recovery,” explained Katie.

Illegal cigarette factory busted in Jenkinstown In a joint operation last Thursday morning (15/03/2018), Revenue and An Garda Síochána, as part of the Joint Agency Task Force, closed down an illicit commercial cigarette factory in Jenkinstown.

Eleven men, all from Eastern Europe and aged in their late 20s to late 50s, were arrested by Gardaí and brought to Dundalk Garda Station where they were detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984.

This is the first time an illegal commercial cigarette production plant has been

discovered in the State and according to a statement from Revenue the factory was in full operation when revenue officers and the Armed Support Unit of An Garda Síochána entered the premises just before 08:00 on Thursday morning.

“Revenue officers found more than 40 tonnes of tobacco, all the pre-cursor components for the manufacture of cigarettes, and approximately 25 million cigarettes, branded “Mayfair”, ready for distribution.

“This was a sophisticated self-contained operation with

machinery capable of producing 250, 000 illicit cigarettes per hour and pre-processing, processing and packaging facilities, along with living quarters.

“Illicit cigarettes that originated in this factory have previously been seized in both Ireland and the UK. If the finished cigarettes seized at the factory today had reached the Irish market, the estimated loss to the Exchequer would have been approximately €12 million. Investigations are ongoing, nationally and internationally,” concluded the statement.

Louth celebrates its entrepreneurial spirit

Local Enterprise Week Louth 2018 was topped off with a superb showcase event that celebrated excellence across generations. The “Inspiring Enterprise” lunch event was held in An Táin Theatre in Dundalk’s Town Hall and hosted by Local Enterprise Office Louth.

Speaking at the event, Head of Enterprise in Louth Thomas McEvoy declared “We celebrated innovation, entrepreneurship and endurance at the National Enterprise Awards finals for Louth on 9th March.

Our guest speaker John Teeling, a celebrated entrepreneur over many decades, shared his wisdom. He talked of vision, determination, dealing with uncertainty, accessing resources and most importantly, the grit needed to survive when things get tough.”

By contrast, John Teeling shared the stage with some of Louth’s emerging entrepreneurs, each of whom scooped a Louth Enterprise Award. Indeed, with three female entrepreneurs taking the three awards, MC Noel

Davidson declared that Louth was extending International Women’s Day an extra 24 hours.

Marita Collier of Drummond House Garlic in Baltray took home the Innovation Award.

Drummond House are Ireland’s first and largest commercial growers of Irish Premium Asparagus, Heritage Garlic, Elephant Garlic and Garlic Scapes.

Drummond House were praised for creating new products and market demand for a garlic, a product with a previously limited range.

Simply Fit Food’s Evelyn Garland collected the Start-Up award.

This fast-growing enterprise, operating from the North East Food Hub in Ardee, provides healthy, nutritious ready meals to health conscious, time poor

consumers all over the country. This is one in a series of awards the company have collected recently.

Meanwhile, Nicole Carey of Celtic Testing in Dundalk was the recipient of the Best Established Business Award. Celtic Testing will now go forward to represent Louth in the National Enterprise Awards final in the Mansion House Dublin in May. The company was set up to allow growing companies to mitigate risk on their technology investments through technically skilled and experienced consultants. Employing 9 people, and planning to grow to 25 staff in the coming year, the company is renowned for delivering excellence to Irish and international clients.

On Thursday March 22 at 8pm, the County Museum Dundalk, in conjunction with the County Louth Archaeological and Historical Society, will host an illustrated lecture by Paul Gosling entitled ‘Cumann mBan Badges: Irish Women and Rebel Insignia, 1914-1921’, will be held.

Cumann na mBan or The Women’s Council was established in April 1914 as a women’s auxiliary organisation to the Irish Volunteers. Between 1914 and 1921, when the truce between Republican and British forces came into effect, the organisation went through several phases of development. One minor but striking aspect of Cumann na mBan during this period was the creation and distribution of small metal membership badges (see illustration) many of which have since found their way into family display cabinets, regional and national museums and auctioneer’s catalogues.

This illustrated lecture by Paul Gosling of the Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology will explore the origins and design of these badges from their

initial appearance as plain base-metal lapel pins in late 1914 or early 1915.

By 1921, these humble symbols of membership had evolved into something quite different – mementos of service made from the finest materials (silver and gold). In the process, the design of the badges went through a series of subtle changes which may in some way reflect the evolution of Cumann na mBan itself. Research on the badges is being conducted with Ailbhe Rogers of the National University of Ireland, Maynooth, the results of which are being prepared for publication.

Particular emphasis will be placed on the role of the Dundalk printing company, Dundalgan Press, in the design and manufacture of the Cumann na mBan badges. Their involvement was part of a wider engagement by the company in the production of printed materials and accessories for the republican movement, an engagement which appears to have begun with the rebranding of the company as ‘Dundalgan Press’ in 1908.

Dundalk businessman Martin Naughton has become the first Irish winner of the prestigious ‘Oslo Business for Peace Award’.

At a ceremony in Oslo on Tuesday morning, the Business for Peace Foundation declared its 2018 honourees with Martin Naughton announced as the first ever Irish honouree by the Foundation following his nomination by Chambers Ireland in conjunction with the Northern Ireland Chamber of Commerce and Industry and South Dublin Chamber.

Owners of Foley’s Tea Kearney stars on good Rooms vow to bounce back weekend for local sport

Owners of the popular Castlebellingham establishment ‘Foley’s Tea-Rooms’ have vowed that they will rebuilt their business after a devastating fire destroyed the thatched roof of the premises on Monday morning.

Fire units from Dundalk, Ardee, Dunleer and Castlebellingham arrived on the scene to battle the blaze and stayed until late on Monday evening until the area was deemed safe.

It is believed that there were some customers in Foley’s Tea Rooms when the fire started but all were evacuacted and nobody was harmed.

Speaking on social media on Monday evening the owners of Foley’s vowed that the business would re-open eventually while also taking the opportunity to thank everybody who had helped out since the fire started on Monday morning.

say? Firstly, and most importantly thankfully no one was hurt during today’s fire.

At this time we are unsure how the fire started but it appears to have started on the outside of the Thatch at the back of the building.

“The fire brigade and other emergency services were on the scene within 10 minutes and while they set about trying to control the fire they also helped us to clear probably 80% of the furniture and items

from inside the building, we thank them from the bottom of our hearts. They have now been here for almost 12 hours...mighty men and women.

“Can we also just mention here Jacqueline and Ryan our Neighbours, who got stuck in alongside us and helped us to clear the building along with two other gentlemen, we are so, so grateful for your help and the sugary tea xx.

Robert Kearney underlined his status as one of the Wee County’s most celebrated sport stars by helping Ireland complete the rugby grand slam in Twickenham on Saturday afternoon.

The Cooley native has been in splendid form throughout Ireland’s historic campaign and was once again instrumental as Ireland brushed aside the challenge of England.

Quality play continues as Snooker League hits halfway mark

The Tuborg Snooker League has reached the halfway point of the season and once again there was plenty of excellent snooker on show in the Commercial Club on Wednesday evening.

‘Natures Water’ continued their fine start to the season as they saw off ‘Mallon Property’ 3-1.

The took an early lead when Alan Thompson beat Brendan O’Hanlon and they extended that lead when Ken Byrne beat Stephen O’Hanlon to leave it 2-0 to ‘Natures Water’. It got even better for them when Joe McEneaney beat Tiernan Mallon to put his side 3-0 up going into the doubles.

However Mallon’s duo of Brendan O’Hanlon and Antony Fee would restore a bit of pride by beating Alan Thompson (who under league rules can’t play twice

in a night in this round again) and Tomas Geroc leaving it 3-1 to Natures Water.

The bottom two sides in the league faced each other in the next match as ‘The Embassy’ took on ‘Charlie Chaplin’s’.

Both sides were in need of a victory to kick start their season and it looked good for ‘The Embassy’ early on as they raced into a 2-0 lead with wins from Micky Ralph over Maddy Hoey and Dominic O’Connor over JJ McArdle. However, Chaplin’s with there backs against the wall showed grit and determination to claw back the next two games with wins for Patsy Muckian over Gerry Rodgers and a fine Doubles performance from new signing Kevin McDonald and JJ McArdle in what could yet prove to be a vital point.

In the evening’s final match

league leaders ‘Gonnolly Signs’ took on Cusken Ltd who started the evening in second. It was the league leaders who took a tense opener with Mickey Kelly beating Keith Morris on a black ball.

Cusken’s hit back in the next match as Liam Johnston continued his fine league form to draw Cusken’s level as he beat Cheltenham top tipster Steve McBride in double quick time.

In the third match a fine performance from ‘Gonnolly Signs’ Mark Laverty over Cusken’s Paddy Hayes put the league leaders back in front. In the doubles match a fantastic display from David McArdle and partner Aaron Callan gave ‘Gonnolly Signs’ the victory which cemented their place on top of the league with a win over Paddy Hayes and Liam Johnston.

Vishva declared ‘Leinster Oratory Champion’ Vishva Nagappan secured Dundalk Grammar School’s first piece of silverware this year when he was awarded the title of” Leinster Oratory Champion” at the Leinster Finals of the Matheson Junior Debating National Mace.

The Matheson Junior Debating National Mace is the largest debating competition on the island of Ireland with over 300 students participating in Leinster alone.

The Leinster Final took place in Castleknock Community College on Saturday the 10th March where the top 80 speakers in Leinster competed for a coveted place in the National Final. Students took part in 3 debates over the course of the day. Following the Grand Final Mr Nagappan was announced as the Leinster Oratory Champion having excelled in the skills of persuasion, charm and eloquence.

Mr Nagappan, who is ranked the 7th best speaker in Leinster, will now represent the Grammar at the National Final on the 21st of April.

St Vincent’s school community had the pleasure of giving a céad míle fáilte to 50 students and their accompanying teachers from Lycée Despiau in Mont de Marsan, France, on the occasion of their week-long visit to Ireland.

Students of French and their families acted as hosts for the group, allowing them to experience Irish life both at home and at school.

This was in return for the wonderful welcome St. Vincent’s students received in France on last year’s successful programme.

DkIT launches new course for entrepreneurs DkIT has become ‘the first Institute of Technology in Ireland to deliver a certified course in Food Tourism for entrepreneurs in the Boyne Valley.”

The Level 7 Certificate in Applied Business Development for Food Tourism has attracted both start-ups and expanding producers in both the food and

drink industries.

Among the businesses taking part are organic farmers and artisan bakers.

DkIT’s Strategic Plan commits the college to increasing its commitment and engagement with enterprise and the community according to Dr Patricia Moriarty of DkIT.

Ella Taylor (age 8) from Scoil Mhuire nGael, Dundalk has been chosen as one of Ireland’s best young painters for her entry to the Sightsavers Junior Painter Awards 2018. Ella’s (Climate Controller Station Bringing Fairness to all Nations) painting was inspired by the competition theme of “Put Us In The Picture” and is a regional winner in the 3rd/4th class category.

Also highly commended by the judges for her artwork was Alice O’Shaugnessy Larkin (age 6, An Edible Land) from Scoil Mhuire na nGael in Dundalk and Chloe Crosby (age 10, Braille) from St Joseph’s National School in Dundalk.

Competition was as strong as ever with children from hundreds of primary schools across the country entering the very popular annual art competition. Ella is one of the fifteen finalists picked to have their paintings displayed at an awards ceremony in Dublin on April 17 where the overall winners will be revealed.

Each of the 15 regional winners will have the opportunity to see their work displayed at a special Awards Day ceremony in April where three overall national winners will be announced. The national winners will receive cash prizes for their schools, sponsored by The Book Centre and Barker and Jones bookshop, and memberships and ‘toolboxes’ full of arts and crafts materials from ReCreate Ireland.

Chamber’s seminar on Employment Incentives and Supports for SMEs Dundalk Chamber of Commerce in association with the EURES Cross Border Partnership held a very successful seminar on Employment Incentives and Supports available for SMEs in the Cross Border Region on Thursday March 8 in Bellingham Castle.

The event was a huge success with over 120 delegates in attendance to hear how those employers

in the border areas can be assisted with their recruitment needs.

Louth TD describes St John of God audit as ‘deeply worrying’

Sinn Féin Louth TD Gerry Adams has described a HSE audit report into secret payments to senior managers at the St John of God charity as “deeply worrying”.

According to media reports, senior managers received €528,756 annually until 2013, when they received a lump sum totalling almost €1.9 million.

After 2013, no more top-ups were to be paid. However, the HSE audit found that 14 executives continued to receive top-ups, despite St. John of God having

told the HSE that this had stopped and was now in compliance with public pay policy.

“St. John of God is a charity which receives donations from the public as well as being in receipt of substantial taxpayer’s money.

In the three years between 2013 and 2015 it received over half a billion from taxpayers.

“The HSE concluded that the failure of St. John of God to disclose its continued non-compliance with public pay policy was ‘a fundamental breach of trust’.

It concluded that St. John of God did not meet the standards of transparency, accountability, candour and co-operation that the HSE should expect of bodies funded by the taxpayer.

“St. John of God provides important services to citizens in Louth, especially to citizens with disabilities.

“There is an onus on the charity to abide by HSE rules and to ensure that its pay policy does not breach these,” added Deputy Adams.

Louth people who are blind or vision impaired throughout the country are getting ready to use the brand new tactile ballot template in the upcoming referendum, meaning they can now cast their votes in secret for the first time.

Up to now people with sight loss had to rely on others to help them exercise their franchise, which compromised their privacy.

Women’s Mini Marathon ALONE, the charity that supports older people to age at home, is calling on women throughout County Louth to participate in the VHI Women’s Mini Marathon in aid of ALONE. The charity aims to raise money for the day to day running of vital services for older people throughout the country.

St Louis girls praised Fined after being for fitness study Dundalk Leader 22nd March 2018

Five first Year students from St. Louis secondary school, Dundalk attended the PExpo at DCU last week. Sarah Lawrence, Erin Hogan Curtis, Ellie Sullivan, Clara Casey and Nicole Ellis presented their project to judges, teachers and students alike.

The girls were highly commended by all who spoke with them and their work was greatly admired.

Their project, in the Wellbeing Category, gave detailed analysis of the work they have been part of since beginning First Year last September. Their project focused on addressing the following question; ‘Do we know how healthy and fit we are and what can we do to improve this?’

To answer this question, all students in first year answered an extensive survey and took part in fitness testing. Results indicated that while the

As a result of findings, all first year students undertook a six week programme where students learnt about eating healthily and the benefits of regular exercise. Work was issued for home and involved

parents and siblings taking part in daily physical tasks and nutrition challenges.

Other interventions as part of the project saw students counting their steps daily using pedometers and tracking their fitness through two further fitness tests.

In order for the group of five students to estab-

lish if their efforts had been successful, all students in first year undertook further fitness testing and answered more questions from several surveys. Results were conclusive with five out of six (83%) first year students more active and consequently fitter. Approximately the same number were also eat-

ing healthier with parents noticing improved energy and concentration levels among their daughters.

One of the last interventions the girls introduced as part of the project was to design their own book of positivity. The girls collected words of wisdom and encouraging statements from all girls across first year, compiling them into a small and simple booklet. This booklet was distributed to all first years to keep in their pocket and for them to read when they were feeling sad of having a bad day.

The future is looking good for PE with the introduction of Leaving Certificate and Senior Cycle PE into the curriculum. St Louis was chosen as a pilot school and Kate O’Byrne, also a PE teacher at the school is ready to begin inspiring students with this option from September.

Two young men who became involved in a fight in the early hours of the morning were given six months to pay at combined total of €1,500.

Caoibhin Leonard (19) of 37 Woodview Park, Dundalk, who admitted a charge of assaulting a Garda was ordered to pay €500 compensation to the officer and a further €500 to charity by September 6, while Ryan McEneaney (20) of 44 Woodview Park, Dundalk, was told by Judge John Coughlan to pay €500 for charity by that date.

The court heard that on June 17 last year that Gardai were called to a fight between two parties.

When Gardai intervened Mr McEneaney jumped on the back of one of the officers, while a struggle ensued with Mr Leonard who kicked the Garda on the back.

Solicitor Frank McDonnell stated that the two men has so much drink taken that they were not aware of what had happened on the night. They couldn’t remember the incident until they saw it played back in the solicitor’s office on CCTV. He added that the men, who are currently not working, were ashamed of their actions, while he pointed out that neither had any previous convictions.

Judge John Coughlan put the case back to September 6 to allow the men pay the money.

The HSE confirmed that it is investigating two cases of suspected meningococcal meningitis in Navan, Co Meath while Dr Paul Kavanagh acknowledged concerns that worried parents have across the NorthEast.

While advising vigilance in relation to looking out for signs and symptoms of the disease, Dr Kavanagh stressed that the Public Health Protection Team were actively managing the situation locally.

“Vaccination means that meningitis has become a rare occurrence.

When it does occur, cases are usually isolated - spread from person to person is unusual, espe-

cially outside household contact. Vigilance for symptoms is important especially for younger children and adolescents,” advised Paul.

Meningitis is a serious illness involving inflammation of the membranes covering the brain and spinal cord. It can be caused by a variety of different germs, mainly bacterial and viruses. Bacterial meningitis is less common but usually more serious than viral meningitis and requires urgent treatment with antibiotics.

Bacterial meningitis may be accompanied by septicaemia. The bacteria live naturally in the nose and throat of normal healthy persons without causing illness. The spread of the bacteria is caused by droplets from the nose and mouth. The illness occurs most frequently in young children and adolescents, usually as isolated cases. Bacterial meningitis or septicaemia requires urgent antibiotic treatment.

Signs and Symptoms may include: Severe headaches, fever, vomiting, drowsiness, discomfort from bright light, neck stiffness.

Great talent on display at Scoildrámaíocht An Táin theatre was the venue for Féile Dhún Dealgan 2018, the Louth Regional Competition of the Irish Language drama festival for schools organised by An Cumann Scoildrámaíochta.

Seven dramas took part in this year’s festival from schools across Co. Louth including Gaelscoil Dhún Dealgan, Kilsaran National School, Redeemer Boys’ School, Bellurgan National School, St. Mary’s College Dundalk and Coláiste Lú.

Adjudicator, Pól Mac Duibhinse was hugely impressed with the standard of acting and production seen over the course of the productions. The festival gives students a great opportunity to act and have fun all as Gaeilge and was a thoroughly enjoyable day for all involved.

Five months for driving without insurance A man who pleaded guilty to driving while disqualified was sentenced to five months in prison at Dundalk District Court.

Aleksejs Visnakovs (40) of 187 Oaklawns, Dundalk, was stopped by Gardai at Red Cow on January 30 this year having

previously been disqualified on March 23.

Solicitor Barry Callan stated that his client had been taking a car to a mechanic for a friend when he was stopped.

He added that the defendant was originally from Latvia but

had been in Ireland for ten years.

He had previously worked as a mechanic but was now unemployed, while he had a difficulty with alcohol.

Judge John Coughlan imposed a five month sentence and a ten year driving ban.

Local Enterprise Office Louth hosted the County Finals of the Student Enterprise Programme on Tuesday 13 March and were delighted to welcome over 200 students to the event.

The competition is an exciting and rewarding experience for young people, creating a culture where students think more readily of becoming entrepreneurs and setting up their own business in the future.

It enhances their creativity, improves communication skills and provides practical uses for business studies topics. This year saw 51 mini companies from second level schools in

the county making it to county final.

Companies ranged from dog beds from recycled tyres to handcrafted gifts from recycled horse-shoes and personalised pictures using bottle caps in 3D frames. There was a price comparison website for video games to a prepaid teenage card, fidget boards, a picture guide to help children with Autism and natural mineral based eyeshadow and lip scrubs.

A man who took his mother’s car without permission was fined €420 at Dundalk District Court when he pleaded guilty to a charge of driving without insurance.

Daniel McManus of 17 Patrick Tierney Crescent, Cox’s Demesne, Dundalk, also pleaded guilty to driving without a licence and failing to produce documents

after being stopped at Castletown Road on July 24 last year.

The court heard that the 22-year-old man, who is currently studying for his Junior Certificate had taken the car without permission.

In imposing the fine Judge John Coughlan stated that he would not impose a disqualification.

St Mary’s excel in drama festival

Students from St Mary’s College who performed at the Féile Dhún Dealgan drama festival

St. Mary’s College Irish language drama group recently took part in Féile Dhún Dealgan, the annual Irish language drama festival organised by An Cumann Scoildrámaíochta, in An Táin Theatre on Wednesday March 14.

After weeks of preparation and hard work they took to the stage and performed the drama ‘Ní hUasal ná Íseal ach Thuas seal agus Thíos seal’.

They gave a great performance on the day and they have

now qualified for the Leinster Provincial Final. The school will now represent the region in Mullingar shortly.

Other schools who took part this year included Kilsaran NS, Bellurgan NS, Gaelscoil Dhún Dealgan, Redeemer Boys NS, St Mary’s College and Coláiste Lú.

An Cumann Scoildrámaíochta was first established in 1934 and is now over 80 years old with thousands of students from throughout the

country taking part each year.

The Dundalk festival was reformed in 2014 after a gap of a number of years and its popularity has grown rapidly with great interest shown from local schools.

Minister for Health Simon Harris has vowed to ease the burden on families who are paying huge costs for pay parking in hospitals including Our Lady of Lourdes in Drogheda.

A recent survey by the Irish Cancer Society revealed that OLOL hospital in Drogheda was the most expensive car park in the country with charges of €4 per hour, €15 for four hours and €40 for the day.

The report urged the Government to do something about these charges which they claimed put extra stress on patients and family members who are going through a tough time already. “One of the most common problems faced by cancer patients is the cost associated with their appointments.

“This includes what can often be very long journeys to and from treatment, which sometimes means people have to stay with family, or in a hotel overnight.

“Before visiting hospital for their treatment, patients may have

already had to pay for petrol or a bus or rail journey, childminding and a hotel or B&B. “This is all before reaching the door of the hospital. On arrival, patients will have to pay what can often be quite exorbitant costs on car parking for just a few hours while they undergo treatment, and if they haven’t brought meals with them, they’ll pay to eat out or in the hospital canteen.

“This is before even thinking about the effect treatment can have on patients, both physically, with the numerous associated side effects, and psychologically.

Many cancer patients’ treatment is as an outpatient, such as for chemotherapy or radiotherapy treatment, rather than staying in hospital as inpatients.

“This saves money for hospitals as it is cheaper than looking after a patient who stays overnight.

“However, cancer patients regularly visiting hospital for treatment may find themselves having

to pick up the tab as high travel and parking charges add up,” stated the Irish Cancer Society report. t Last Friday the Minister foru Health Simon Harris announcedt that he had ordered a national re-f view of car parking charges at all 4 the country’s hospitals.

“It is not right or fair thatt people visiting our hospitals fre-t w quently in some cases have to pay r very high charges - particularlyd not fair for cancer patients, peo-t ple on dialysis, people with cystict fibrosis and other chronic conditions - and their families.

“The review will involve the Irish Cancer Society and other patient groups and will report to me quickly,” stated the Minister.

1 IN 4 MOTORISTS ADMIT TO DRIVING WITHOUT RESTRAINTS FOR PETS

Almost one in 4 motorists have driven with runrestrained pets in dtheir car, recent research -from the AA has found. l An AA survey of over 4,000 motorists found othat 24.88% of those rsurveyed admitted to driving with a pet in the car without using proper restraints on at lleast one occasion in ntheir driving career. The ssurvey found that 6.67% of respondents admittted to doing this within -the past month, a move which car increase the y risk of the driver being ydistracted while behind -the wheel according to cthe AA. - “Many people will have seen our new car einsurance advertising rcampaign with our dog Mulligan who is a big fan o of driving around in the car, but if you are travelling anywhere with a pet it’s important that you use a pet safety belt or a travel carrier as opposed to having them loose in the car with you,” Conor Faughnan, AA Director of Consumer Affairs stated. “While it may seem harmless to allow

All car occupants should wear restraints. your pet to pop his head out the window or sit in the passenger seat next to you, animals are, by their nature, unpredictable and could easily become startled or react in a way which takes your concentration off the task at hand. Ultimately, very few people would allow a passenger in their car without using a seatbelt and we need to take the same precaution with our pets too.”

In contrast, the AA survey found that less than 1% of motorists surveyed had driven a car where one or more

passengers weren’t using their seatbelts in the past month.

In total, just 0.82% of respondents admitted to driving with an unrestrained passenger in their car in the past month. However, when asked to consider their entire driving history, 11.4% of motorists admitted to driving while one or more passengers were not using their seatbelt on at least one occasion in the past.

“While it is worrying that this is a behaviour we have seen in the past, with almost 1 in

12 motorists admitting to allowing a passenger not use their seatbelt at some point over three years ago, it’s welcome to see such low levels of non-compliance with the use of seatbelts in more recent times. Everyone thinks that it’ll never be them that’s involved in an incident but unfortunately accidents do happen and ensuring everyone in the car is properly restrained could be the difference between a minor bump and a more serious injury or worse,” Faughnan added. “In the event of an accident an unrestrained passenger, whether human or animal, could experience far more severe injuries and potentially cause additional injury to other passengers in the car as they are thrown around the vehicle following the impact.”
