THE season of goodwill is upon us and a local group have shown that the spirit of generosity is well and truly alive in Dundalk as they help the homeless and most vulnerable people in our town. The recently formed Save Our Homeless group in Dundalk opened their soup stand on Monday evening at the side of the tourist office at Market Square and after a successful first night they stated that they plan on keeping it running throughout the year on a full-time basis. Initially the stand will open on Mondays and Tuesdays but early in the new year that will extend to Wednesdays and Thursdays as well. The extent of the problems of homelessness were

highlighted recently when a man was found dead in the Longwalk Shopping Centre carpark having slept out rough in sub-zero temperatures. One of the men behind the project is Pádraic O’Ruairc and he claims that the need for help for the homeless has never been greater. “It just got to the point where myself and some of my friends were looking around town and seeing homeless people all over the place and we decided that something needed to be done to help them. There are between 10 and 15 volunteers in the group and we are called Save Our Homeless Dundalk. Initially we will be giving out soup and sandwiches to those in need but the plan is to eventually Continued on Page 10

The annual Crosscause fundraiser is almost upon us and once again plenty of laughs are promised as Conor Hughes and friends produce a Fr Ted themed day out on the beach this St Stephens Day. Conor’s charity Crosscause has been helping the people of Romania, Moldova and Ghana for over ten years and his St Stephen’s Day get together is the charity’s main fundraiser each year. Over the years Conor has dressed up as Charlie Chaplin, a bee, Thierry Henry’s hand as well as hosting his own version of The Gathering (which he labelled The Scattering) all in an effort to raise money for Crosscause. This year’s event has a Fr Ted theme and the fun day out on Blackrock beach is open to anybody who enjoys a light-hearted

This year all funds raised will go towards funding eye operations in Ghana and Conor has invited everybody to come down on St Stephen’s morning to take part in the fun filled day. “We’ve been doing this for many years now and it’s always been a great mornings craic. Shock at the passing of Peter Conlon

MANY tributes have been paid to wellknown businessman, Peter Conlon, who died suddenly on Monday. The founder of Conlon’s Food Hall which has a number of outlets in Dundalk, Peter was not just known for his business but Peter Conlon also for his great charity work over the past number of years. The Inniskeen man was a regular supporter of a number of charitable organisations and was heavily involved in many fundraisers in the area. Stephen Kenny wins FW manager of the year

Dundalk Leader 21st December 2016

By Paul Byrne

Dundalk FC manager Stephen Kenny was rewarded for his magnificent achievements this year as he picked up the RTE Manager of the Year award at last weekend’s annual ceremony. Kenny and his staff have enjoyed a stellar year as they guided the Lilywhites to a third successive league trophy as well as negotiating their way to the Europa League group stages where they performed with huge credit to come within a whisker of securing a place in the knockout stages. The team were also the first Irish club ever to pick up points in a European group stage match thanks to their victory over Maccabi Tel Aviv and draw away to AZ Alkamaar. Stephen Kenny and assistant manager Vinny Perth were both in attendance on Saturday evening for the Annual RTE Sports Awards. As Stephen collected his award for manager of the year he was quick to praise his players and staff who he insisted were equally deserving of the award. “I accept it on behalf of the

The players have been magnificent over the last two-and-a-half years, particularly this year when we’ve had unprecedented success,” stated Stephen. Kenny beat a host of high profile managers for the prestigious award, including Connacht Rugby’s Pat Lam and Republic of Ireland manager Martin O’Neill and during his victory speech he promised that he would strive to get even better with next year’s Champions League firmly in his sights. “Obviously, we qualified for the Europa League and had a great run this year and the next step is the Champions League. We have to think like that.

The Dundalk team and Daryl Horgan were also nominated for Team of the year and Sportsperson of the year but lost out to The O’Donovan Brothers (Rowing) and Conor McGregor. Families move into refurbished Woodland Park halting site

Families from the Traveller Community in Louth will began to move into the newly refurbished Woodland Park halting site in Dundalk from Friday December 16. In all, 14 families will take up residence in the new facility, which comprises four permanent bays and 10 transient bays. All of the families were on the Louth County Council housing list, seeking halting site accommodation. Woodland Park had been operated as a serviced halting site by Louth County Council until 2008, when it closed due to a lack of interest among the Traveller community in using the site. It was refurbished in light of renewed interest among the Traveller community for such accommodation. The cost of refurbishment is

in the region of €450,000 and additional monies were used to clear the site of a build-up of waste that occurred when the site was closed. The refurbished site is fully compliant with fire and safety; electrical, and sanitary facility requirements. Four families will move into refurbished permanent bays, which comprise a kitchen / living area, toilet and shower facilities and a space for a caravan. Ten families will move into serviced bays, which have space for a caravan and have a toilet / wash facility, and power and water supplies for a caravan. Commenting ahead of the reopening of the site, Chief Executive of Louth County Council, Joan Martin said: “Woodland Park has been refurbished to the

highest quality, and is compliant with all safety and sanitary requirements. The Council worked with the Department of the Environment, Community and Local Government on this refurbishment and we would like to thank the department for its assistance. We wish the families moving into Woodland Park every happiness in their new accommodation.” She added: “We have completed a consultation with all Traveller families in the county on their views and requirements in respect of future Travellerspecific accommodation, the results of which will be considered by the Traveller Accommodation Consultative Committee, and will feed into a new Traveller Accommodation Plan. This will be published next year.”

Christmas concert at Ardee school

Monastery National School, Ardee, hosted their annual Christmas Concert recently to packed audiences of parents, grandparents and children. 280 pupils appeared on stage throughout the concert and 750 attended. A wide variety of talent was showcased and the acts performed included sketches, songs, plays, tin whistle players, Irish Dancing, the school choir and the spectacular Glow Stick Boys. Mrs McGrory’s and Mrs Murphy’s Junior Infants gave us a wonderful Christmas Medley and were followed by Ms McKeown’s and Ms Corr’s Senior Infants who performed Bedtime Before Christmas. Master Woods’ tin whistle group played some wonderful traditional tunes and we were also treated to the

skilful Irish Dancing of Eamon Smyth from 5th class. He represents Ireland in next year’s Irish Dancing World Championships. Mrs Browne’s 2nd class sang Christmas songs from all over the world while Ms Cusack’s 3rd class entertained us with songs and recorder playing. Mrs Higgins’ 1st class ended the first act with a beautiful performance of The Christmas Story. The School Choir opened the 2nd act with a flourish under the direction of Mrs Browne and Annamarie Brennan. They will be appearing at the Cross Border Orchestra of Ireland’s Peace Proms in the RDS in February 2017. They were followed by Mr McAdam’s 4th class who featured elves going on strike before Christmas. Thank God

Santa negotiated a peaceful resolution. Mrs Coleman’s 5th class featured movie characters from many different film genres in the telling of Seven Brides for Seven Brothers and at the end the brothers got their bride. The finale was exceptional and in total darkness with Mr McCoys 6th class Glow Stick Boys performing When The Lights Go Out. They received a standing ovation. The lighting with its many special effects was operated capably by former pupil Nathan Leavy and backstage was slickly managed by Mr McCreanor and 6th class boys. A special word of thanks to former teachers Mr Kevin Keane who returned as musical director and Mr Bartle Woods who led his tin whistle group on stage.

Long time Mellon Educate supporter Karen McArdle along with first time volunteer Martin McLoughlin have recently returned from Cape Town, South Africa where they helped build eleven new classrooms in the township of Khayelitsha. Karen and Martin were part of a 270 strong team who helped refurbish two schools and in just one week they managed to build eleven classrooms, two libraries, two toilet blocks, a kitchen, three playgrounds and two outdoor shaded eating areas. Karen, owner of Chaplin’s hairdressers in the Clanbrassil centre in Dundalk, made her 14th trip to South Africa as a volunteer for the Mellon Educate project and once again she was delighted at how much the team achieved during their week-long stay in Khayelitsha. “It’s fantastic what can be achieved when people work together as a team. This was my 14th building blitz with

Niall Mellon and Martin’s first. Once again it was an amazing experience and we would both encourage anyone especially a tradesman to consider joining us next year on Mellon educates 2017 blitz in November. We can be contacted on facebook or in Chaplin’s or Fives cabs” explained Karen. Mellon Educate has built or renovated five schools since 2013 changing the educational landscape for over 5.500 children. This would not have been possible without the

commitment from volunteers like Karen and Martin and the support they have received from the local community. “For everyone who sponsored and supported myself and Martin for Mellon Educates 2016 Blitz this is what your support achieved in one week there are no words big enough to say how much we appreciate you. “All the money raised by us goes towards ensuring that these schools are built and helps improve one of the poorest regions of South Af-

rica”, she added Having previously focused on housing the Niall Mellon Trust is now focused on educating the poor of South Africa and help improve the statistic which shows that there are 12 million children in 30,000 schools with a completion rate of just 20%. Over the past couple of years, the charity has built or refurbished schools in Nairobi, Kenya and around Cape Town as well as travelling to Nelson Mandela’s village of Qunu last year.

Margaret up for top award

A local entrepreneur has had her flair for business rewarded after winning through to the regional final of the Ireland’s Best Young Entrepreneur (IBYE) competition. Margaret Robb from Sweet Little Babies on the Coes Road, will battle it out with other successful businesses in the area after being named Best Established Business in Louth. The Louth finals were held in Bellingham Castle last week where 19 companies competed with 18 other finalists. Introduced in 2014, Ireland’s Best Young Entrepreneur (IBYE) is a competition for entrepreneurs under 35 years of age. The Local Enterprise Office in each county runs their own competition and each selects a winner in three categories: Best New Idea, Best Start Up and Best Established Business.

Best Established - Margaret Robb - Sweet Little Babies

Trading nearly four years, both in store and online, Margaret has major plans for development in 2017 and with her energy, drive and determination she is bound to succeed. Each winner receives valuable investment in their business plus additional business

support as they move forward to the Regional Finals on 24th January. The regional finals will take place on January 24 when Margaret will be up against the winners Meath, Cavan and Monaghan for a place in the National Finals.

Took cannabis to relieve pain

A man who suffered a serious arm injury while working as a fisherman used cannabis to relieve the pain. However, Paul Woods of The Bungalo, Omeath, appeared in Dundalk District Court after being found with a quantity

of the drug after being stopped by Gardai on the old Newry Road on December 8 last year. The value of the drug was estimated at between €60 and €70 and solicitor Niall Breen explained that the 35-year-old DkIT student was using it

for pain relief. He explained that while working as a fisherman his client’s arm was caught in a winch and he found that cannabis was the only thing that eased the pain. Mr Breen stated that the defendant,

who had stopped using the drug, was going through a difficult time as his mother had recently passed away. Judge Flann Brennan found the facts proven and dismissed the case and warned him that drugs ruin people’s lives.

Dundalk no longer world record holders By Paul Byrne

Dundalk no longer hold the world record for ‘World’s Largest Santa Run’ with their total of 4,961 Santa’s being beaten last weekend by an event on Virginia Beach, Virginia, USA. The Surf -n-Santa 5 miler took place on Saturday on Virginia Beach with organisers hoping to break the world record which was set in Dun-

dalk at the end of 2013. Unfortunately for the town the record was indeed broken with 5,025 Santa’s turning up which meant that the record was beaten by a total of 64 Santa’s. The Santa Run was originally organised to raise money for local charities around Dundalk and reached its peak in 2013 when the record was broken. Over €60,000 was raised for eighteen local charities including Men’s Sheds, North Louth

Hospice, SNAP, Lordship Children’s Respite Centre and SOSAD. This year there was a new theme with an attempt to break the record for most Christmas jumpers worn in the same place. Unfortunately, the efforts of the people of Dundalk just fell short. It remains to be seen whether organisers will revive the Santa Run next year in an attempt to reclaim their record.

On Wednesday evening, the families of the students in Castletown GNS congregated in St. Nicholas Church for the school’s Christmas Pageant. Everyone was treated to an evening of festive and holy carols, poems and bible readings. A group of tin whistlers directed by Ms McArdle played “Joy to the World”, while Ms Edel Duffy taught the fiddlers “Good King Wencelas”. It concluded with the whole school singing “Away in a Manger”. It was a beautiful evening to start off the Christmas season.

DLS Class Act 2016 De La Salle College’s annual talent show ‘Class Act’ returned to the stage on Thursday December 8 in An Táin Theatre. The show kicked off with ‘Reece and the Ukues’. This act, comprised of the second year music class on ukuleles along with vocalist Reece McCluskey, got the audience singing with their cool version of I’m Yours by Jason Mraz. Next up were the incredibly talented, traditional music duo of Donnchadh Hughes and Conor Conway playing a medley of tunes on harp, flute and whistle. This toe-tapping performance was then followed by 5th year

student Maleek Abdul Rasheed and band, with their version of Justin Bieber’s hit ‘Love Yourself’. Aaron Dillon then took to the mic and wowed the audience with a heart warming version of This Town. Adam Kane’s captivating classical ‘Für Elise’ on the piano brought a touch of class to the theatre. Far Behind, fronted by first year singer Barry Caldwell delivered a confident rendition of ‘Closer’. He was joined on stage by Sean Gartlen, Samuel Bodejo, James Marley, Liam McEneaney and Sam Ogabomediele. Padraig Grennan was next to take to the stage along with ‘Sam and Sons’ to

sing ‘Little Lion Man’. Their traditional version including Donnachadh Hughes on whistle and funky beats by Sam Ogabomediele had the entire audience dancing in their seats. Magic, aka Pearse Travers, Conor Conway and Iarlaith Carroll won the crowd over with their heart –warming rendition of ‘Catch and Release’, while Jack McCaughey delivered the lyrics using sign language. Feral, comprised of Darragh Bond on elecrtic guitar and Harry Foley on drums, kicked off the second half of the show with an exhilarating original composition. This was followed by Iarlaith Carroll’s captivating performance of Take my hand, accompanied by Donnchadh Hughes on piano. Dear Walt were next to take to the stage, with Saoirse Murrays powerful version of ‘So Far Away’ accompanied by James Crilly, Enoch Elewa and Mark Kingham. Next up a velvety smooth version of ‘Ain’t No Sunshine’ by Neil Murray and Ben Verling captivated the crowd. Sam Bodejo, David Bodejo and Dennis Otobar took the audience by storm with their energetic dance routine under the name of 4:12ky. Adam McArdle followed with a beautiful performance of ‘All we needed’ by Craig David. This was followed by 6th year student Conor Gray with ‘I’ll Stand by you’. Next Colm Bellew and band ’99 Red Balloons’ won the audience’s hearts with their version of ‘Nina’ by Ed sheeran. Finally, Oisín Mc Mahon and Saoirse Murray brought the show to a captivating close with a powerful version of ‘Sweet Dreams T N’. Joint 3rd prize was awarded to Conor Gray and Oisín Mc Mahon, 2nd prize went to Tradgic and finally 1st prize went to deserving winners Darragh Bond and Harry Foley.
