EVE McCrystal is arriving home from the Paralympics in Rio as a double Olympic medallist following two fantastic performances on the bike with her partner Katie George Dunleavy Eve and Katie bounced back from disappointment in the velodrome earlier on in the competition (where they narrowly missed out on reaching the final) to win gold in the pursuit race last Wednesday on the road.

probably the greatest side in league of Ireland history. His team have created enough memories for fans in the past three years to last a lifetime.

While Dundalk’s performances at home have been special, delivering two league titles on the trot it has been their European adventures which have really captured the public’s imagination.

Recent seasons have seen Dundalk beat Hajduk Split 2-1 away from home in the Europa qualifying stages.

Then came last season’s epic tussle with Bate Borisov where peo-

ple began to sit up and take notice as Dundalk came within a whisker of causing a huge upset against their seasoned Champions League opponents.

This season they went one step better, not just beating BATE but crushing them 3-0 in a memorable evening in Tallaght stadium.

A narrow defeat to Legia Warsaw saw Dundalk parachuted into the Europa League group stages where not many people gave them a chance of gaining any points in a group containing AZ Alkmaar, Zenit St Petersburg and

Bid to become first dementia-friendly town Dundalk will this week launch a bid to be named as Ireland’s first ever dementia-friendly town.

Businesses and community groups will be coming together in a concerted attempt to raise people’s awareness of dementia up one level and provide a more accepting and understanding environment for

those affected.

The announcement is being made to coincide with The Dementia Roadshow – a one-day free event for families, businesses, groups and people affected by dementia, aimed at elevating people’s knowledge of the condition.

All businesses in the area are asked to send one representative each

to the free roadshow, which takes place on Tuesday September 27 between 10am-2pm at The Marshes Shopping Centre Dundalk.

The Dementia Roadshow will feature information on training and awareness programmes, local resources and vital support initiatives for carers.

There will also be in-

teractive workshops and presentations by the Dementia Elevator Team and special guests based on specific business types with financial services (10-11am), retail services (11-Noon) and transport services (Noon-1pm).

Admitted kicking a Garda during scuffle

A man who kicked a Garda in the face during a scuffle was fined a total of €300 after agreeing to pay a similar sum to the Garda Benevolent Fund.

Brian Thompson of 10 Eden Tce, Jonesboro, Co Armagh, came to Garda notice at 4.20am on March 27 this when two women made a complaint that he was harassing them.

When officers spoke to Mr Ann Stewart of Chapel Street winner of €2500 in the Dundalk Credit Union Cash draw receiving the cheque from Frances Molloy of Dundalk Thompson he was abusive and Credit Union said to one of them: “Come here

and I’ll burst you”. He threw a number of punches and during a scuffle with a Garda they fell to the ground resulting in the officer receiving a kick to the face.

Defence barrister, Irene Sands, stated that while Mr Thompson admitted the kick, she pointed out that it happened during the course of the scuffle and wasn’t a deliberate act.

She added that the 35-yearold defendant apologised to the Garda for his behaviour and he

was mortified.

The barrister added that the father of nine wasn’t a regular drinker and had too much taken on this occasion, and as a result he had little recollection of the incident.

Judge Flann Brennan noted that Mr Thompson had previous convictions as he imposed a €100 fine in respect of three public order offences, while accepting a donation to the Garda Benevolent Fund.

Sod turning at Scoil Uí Mhuirí

There was great excitement in Scoil Uí Mhuirí on Tuesday August 30 when the school’s First Year students gathered with their new teachers at Scoil Uí Mhuirí to turn the sod on the new extension.

Principal Fiona Kindlon, Deputy Principal, Ray Donagh, students and staff gathered along with LMETB CEO Peter Kierans and LMETB Chairman, Cllr Oliver Tully, Chairperson of the school’s Board of Management, Cllr Liam Reilly to mark this historic day in Scoil Uí Mhuirí’s campus development for present and future

students of Dunleer and surrounding areas in the school’s catchment area.

Also in attendance were Board of Management members, Frances Kirwan, Jacqueline Matthews and Aiden Matthews along with Chairperson of the Parents Association Antoinette Rourke, architects on the project from.

McGarry Ní Éanaigh and representatives from the building contractor for the project Mc Aleer and Teague.

Once complete, the school will have the capacity to cater for 750 students.

It will be of a simi-

lar size to the existing school building which means an effective doubling of the current building infrastructure at the school.

Ms. Kindlon explained that this is an exciting time for Scoil Uí Mhuirí as it embarks on this latest phase of its development.

“This will be the third extension to the school in recent years and is an indication of the rapid growth the school is experiencing.

The new two-storey extension will comprise a range of specialist rooms including a new science lab, engineering room, construc-

tion/woodwork room, Multimedia lab, library, pastoral offices and general classrooms”, she stated.

The school also looks forward to doubling its provision for students with Autism by providing a Special Needs Unit which will also have the capacity for 12 students fully equipped with classrooms, meeting rooms and daily living skills area. It will also have a high specification ICT infrastructure installed throughout. The building will be ready to accommodate students in late 2017/early 2018”, added Ms Kindlon.

Home from Perth for game

A dedicated football fan living in Australia flew almost 9000 miles to watch his beloved Dundalk FC take on AZ Alkmaar in the Europa Cup group stages last Thursday evening.

Niall Neary, now living in Perth, is a huge Dundalk fan and when his beloved team qualified for the Europa Cup group stages he was determined to make his way to Holland to cheer on his team in their first ever European group match.

Niall travelled 25 hours from Perth back to his home in Greenwood Drive in Dundalk before having a quick shower followed by

breakfast in the Roma.

From there he made his way back to Dublin airport before getting a flight to Brussells where he hired a car before completing his epic journey to Alkamaar.

His long journey was rewarded as Dundalk produced one of their best ever performances to claim an historic point against the Dutch giants thanks to Ciaran Kilduff’s late equaliser.

According to Niall’s mother, Charlotte, her son has always been a massive Dundalk supporter with the family having strong links with the club. Niall’s father Jimmy is currently involved with the trust and has been involved with the club for many

years.

“Niall was determined to make it to Alkmaar to see Dundalk take on AZ as it was a very proud night for the club. He is a huge supporter of the club and this is actually the second time he has made the trip since he moved to Australia.

“Two years ago he travelled to Luxembourg to watch Dundalk play in the Europa League qualifying stages and he proved to be a good omen on that occasion too with Dundalk winning 2-0.

“Niall left Dundalk for Perth five years ago and he has been following Dundalk’s fortunes very closely from afar.

Former CBS students turn the clock back 50 years The last time some of the alumni of Colaiste Ris in Dundalk met, The Beatles were in the charts, television was in black and white and the last currency but one was in pounds, shillings and pence.

On Saturday September 3, 30 pupils met at their old school to share memories and marvel at the changes in the old alma mater.

Old memories were revived with a video featuring photos of First Communions, school plays and classroom pranks assembled from various sources.

It was a pleasant surprise to

meet again one teacher who had just arrived in our time - one Prionsias O Cuanaigh - in the 1960s an enthusiastic, charismatic teacher with a great love of the Irish language.

In the meantime, he had become principal of the school and was now retired. He greeted his charges in Irish - and was responded to in kind.

The current principal Padraig Hamill took the pupils on a tour of the premises proudly displaying academic and sporting triumphs. After a cup of tea in the

old canteen pupils planted a commemorative tree in the gardens and took themselves off to the Crowne Plaza hotel for a more informal hooley.

There they were joined by the siblings of two pupils who had died in the 60s -Jim Johnston brother of Paul and Fintan Nelson, brother of Aiden.

Singer and songwriter Jim Johnston had his guitar with him and the music of The Beatles, The Beach Boys and the old ballads rang out once more with the pupils of Rang a SĂŠ.

Men’s Sheds celebrate their fifth anniversary

The Dundalk Men’s Shed in Seatown celebrated their fifth birthday in style with a choral recital by the men’s choir attended by Peter Fitzpatrick TD followed by a barbecue in the autumn sunshine.

The local Shed has proved to be a huge success since opening their doors back in 2011 with an average weekly attendance of between 30 and 40 members each day.

There are 90 registered members and the shed provides an important social outlet for the men.

The activities down in the shed range from woodwork and art to tai chi, line dancing, creative writing and even Irish classes for those who wish to participate.

men in Seatown are a great example of what can be achieved. It’s been a wonderful five years and we’re all looking forward to the next five and on into the future” she added.

Family Carers meetings

The Dundalk Family Carers Support Group (part of the Louth Family Carers Support Group) meet on the last Wednesday of every month at 7:30pm in the Community Meeting Room in Tesco Extra.

The Group is age friendly and open to those involved with care of the elderly, adults or children with Special Needs, Disability, family members caring for a family member living with/experiencing Cancer, Dementia, MS, etc.

The Group is also open to those interested in becoming a family carer and former family carers.

The Support Group provides time out for the family carer to receive both emotional and practical support, the opportunity to share their experiences and concerns and learn about benefits and entitlements, training and educational opportunities and all over a cup of tea and a chat.

MEP supports suicide awareness run Mairéad McGuinness, MEP and Vice-President of the European Parliament kick started a special 6 km road race organised by John Mitchels Gaelic Football Club in Ardee in conjunction with Cycle Against Suicide on Sunday September 11 to raise awareness about suicide in the community.

The MEP said it is important that we are all enabled to develop a deeper understanding of the issues and factors at play that result in individuals taking their own lives so that we may be more empowered to help find solutions that will prevent people taking their own lives and also assist those devastated by the loss of a loved one.

Garda property recovery day The Garda ‘National Porperty Recovery Day’ takes place on Thursday September 22. The Property Recovery Day will take place for the Louth Garda Division at Drogheda Garda Station in what is known as the ‘CPD room’.

While most property recovered by An Garda Síochána is immediately returned to its

owners, particularly in the recovery of property stolen in the course of theft and burglaries, there are cases where An Garda Síochána is unable to identify the owner and the property remains in Garda custody.

Members of the public are invited to attend on the aforementioned date from 10am to 6pm where photographs of

property in Garda custody can be viewed. The property relates to the Drogheda, Dundalk and Ardee Garda Districts.

The Louth Divisional Crime Prevention Officer, Garda Victims Service Officer and Community Policing Unit will also be present on the day to offer advice and answer any relevant questions.

Roald Dahl Day at St Fursey’s NS

Pupils and staff at St Fursey’s NS celebrated the 100th anniversary of the birth of Roald Dahl. The read some of the author’s poems, created their own Fantastic Mr Foxes, and made ‘Wanted’ posters for The Enormous Crocodile. They also imagined they were inventors like Willy Wonka, made dream jars like The BFG and had a Roald Dahl quiz.

“We have struck up a great partnership and in this sport it’s not just about the two best cyclists it’s more than that. I feel you have to get on with your partner and have full trust in them. I’ve taken this year off work to concentrate on giving this my best shot. It’s not every day you go to an international championships with a chance of getting a medal so we both will be giving it everything and hopefully that will be enough”, she stated.

And indeed all that hard work did prove to be enough with Eve and Katie-George leaving Rio with two personal bests and two medals from their four races. The pair will

Special visit to Dundalk Karate While visiting Ireland and many of his students across the length and breath of Ireland, Dundalk Karate were privileged to have Master Murray Beatts of Pai Lum Kung Fu drop by for a guest appearance where he gave a short lesson and advice to all aspiring Dundalk Karate’s students.

Master Murray Beatts was visiting Sifu Linley Marcus, who has been a student of Master Murray Beatts for nearly 40 years and on first meeting Head of Dundalk Karate, Sensei Mary Marcus 2nd Dan, over coffee alongside her husband Sifu Linley Marcus, Master Murray Beatts was thrilled with an invitation to attend Dundalk Karate’s Dojo in the Redeemer Fam-

ily Resource Centre, Dundalk for a guest appearance.

With Dundalk Karate having members from the age of four years of age and over 60, and with Sensei Marcus keeping her guest appearance under wraps, nobody had a clue as to who was walking into the Dojo whilst normal training was taking place.

Once Sensei Marcus called Yamai (stop) and introduced Master Murray Beatts, numerous members were immediately awe struck and paid very close attention to every word Master Murray Beatts said and even during a quick lesson from Master Murray Beatts on how to bring a larger opponent to his or her knees.

The whole community up here have really got behind Eve and Katie and the house has been flooded with well-wishers over

the past few days.

“Eve’s children are so proud of their mammy as well and their school in Haggardstown has gone all out with flags and banners congratulating Eve and Katie. Eve’s old school in Bellurgan has also decked the place out with flags and I have to say the support from all over the community has been brilliant. It’s great for our community and it’s great for Dundalk. We really couldn’t be more proud,” stated Frances.

Eve will return back home from Rio today (Wednesday) where a special homecoming awaits her where she will be greeted by friends and family to help celebrate her magnificent achievement.

A fundraising draw in aid of the Make a Wish Foundation will have special interest for fans of Dundalk FC. First prize in the draw is two tickets for the Europa League game against Zenit St Petersburg on October 20, plus a jersey signed by the Dundalk team.

Tickets are €2 or €5 for three with the draw taking place on Monday October 17 in Oriel Park.

A lot can happen in 60 years, and when it comes to safety that’s a long time for cars to evolve. In terms of safety, and several other areas, cars today bear little resemblance to those of yesteryear. To illustrate this we can compare a 1963 SEAT 600 D to the SEAT Ibiza FR with the following results: - Airbags and headrests. “The SEAT 600 wasn’t equipped with headrests”, recalls Javier Luzón, head of Passive Safety at SEAT. This feature makes a significant contribution to preventing whiplash when the car is involved in a low speed collision from the rear. In addition, whereas some SEAT Ibizas have up to six airbags, the SEAT 600 had none, because that technology did not become widespread until the 90s.

- Seat belt. It was developed

in the 60s. But in the beginning it was “an inextensible strap that users had to adjust to their body”, explains Luzón.

The difference today is that this element of passive safety adapts itself to the user’s body and not the other way round.

This provides more safety in the event of a collision, as the current seat belt system fits snugly on the body and retains the passenger instantly.

- Brakes. The brake system on both models is also completely different. The SEAT 600 was equipped with drum brakes “with much lower braking power than what can be achieved today”, says Luzón. By contrast, current cars “have large diameter disc brakes”, tyres are also much wider, “giving them more contact surface with the road for safer traction”, and the cars

feature ABS, a system that prevents cars from skidding out of control when braking.

- Chassis. A car’s chassis is another fundamental component when it comes to safety, and its evolution over the past several decades can clearly be seen. One major difference is the greater width of the structures, such as the doors, which nowadays“have added safety features that give better protection than before in the event of a collision”.

All in all, today’s cars offer the highest level of passenger safety.“The next step we will soon see involves cars with the ability to anticipate future events and react accordingly”, concludes Javier Luzón. This will be the beginning of a new era with technology that was unheard of at the time of the legendary 600.
