Gardaí arrested a man, aged in his 30s, on Monday morning in relation to the capital murder of Detective Garda Adrian Donohoe on 25th January 2013. The man was arrested in the Dundalk area shortly before 8.30am and is currently being detained at Dundalk Garda Station under Section 50 of the Criminal Justice Act 2007. The 32-year-old man from Co. Armagh can legally be questioned for up to seven days. Garda Donohoe. The arrest is a major development in the case and follows the conviction of Aaron Brady (30) for capital murder last year. According to a report in the Irish Times Gardaí have mobile phone evidence showing the suspect’s phone was active until one hour befoe the robbery and then

went completely silent until one hour after the robbery. There were also a number of calls made to Aaron Brady who is the only person to dateto be convicted of the murder of Det. Garda Donohoe. Brady, from Armagh, was sentenced to a minimum of 40 years in prison after the jury accepted, by majority

verdict, that he was the person who shot dead Adrian Donohoe outside Lordship Credit Union in 2013. After that verdict was handed down to Brady, Deputy Commissioner John Twomey sent a message to others who were there that day. “We will be knocking on your door and

we will make sure that you pay for this horrendous action. I have a clear message that the investigation continues. There were other people involved in this horrific crime and you will be brought to justice. We will make every effort to leave no stone unturned,” warned the Deputy Commissioner. As the Louth GAA team returned to training on Monday evening under new manager Mickey Harte, local TD Peter Fitzpatrick expressed his delight at the prospect of local sports getting back up and running. From next Monday underage non-contact outdoor training in pods of 15 or fewer can recommence, this includes dance training if conducted out of doors. Outdoor sports facilities can reopen (e.g. pitches, golf courses and tennis courts, other facilities as appropriate). Activities should take place between a maximum of two households. According to Deputy Fitzpatrick the return of sports training shows that there is light at the end of the tunnel and will give a huge boost to local athletes and kids who haven’t been able to play because of restrictions. “I was up in Darver last night and it was great to see Mickey Harte and Gavin Devlin taking training with a full attendance of players. The players all looked in great shape and they have obviously been working hard at home and following the training plan that Mickey sent out for the players to work at by themselves. Everybody is back in a safe environment and I have to say there has been a hell of a lot of work done up in Darver over the last few months to make sure everything is up to scratch.

Dundalk’s poor start to the season has resulted in team manager Shane Keegan and coach Filippo Giovagnoli leaving the club. Giovagnoli was a complete unknown when he arrived in Oriel Park last August to take over the head coach role following Vinny Perth’s dismissal. The former US academy coach has enjoyed mixed fortunes during his time in Dundalk with the obvious highlights including guiding the Lilywhites to the Europa Cup Group stages and beating Shamrock Rovers in both the FAI Cup final in December and President’s Cup last month. However, league results have been poor both last season and this and his role was complicated earlier this season when new Sporting Director for the club Jim Magilton reshuffled the coaching staff naming Keegan as the new head coach due to the fact he was the only person in the club with a UEFA Pro License. Despite Keegan seemingly being at the top of the coaching chain of command it was clear to anybody who attended any of the early league games that Giovagnoli still had a major input into team tactics during games with the Italian often heard bellowing out instructions from the stands and passing notes down to Keegan in the dugout ahead of substitutions. Dundalk’s poor start to the season has seen them earn just two points from five games (last night’s game

against Derry had not yet been played at time of going to press) and last weekend saw both Keegan and Giovagnoli leave the club with the former Wexford and Galway manager leaving before the Pats game and the Italian leaving after it. Giovagnoli’s assistant Giuseppe Rossi will however remain at the club as Dundalk begin the search for a new manager. A statement released by the club thanked both Shane And Filippo for their efforts since arriving at the club. “The club would like to thank Filippo for his hard work at Oriel Park over the past nine months. He has behaved with great dignity and professionalism throughout his time in Ireland and everyone at the club wishes him all the very best in the future. “Giuseppe Rossi will remain at Dundalk FC as part of the coaching team. “Dundalk FC can also confirm that Shane Keegan has left his position as team manager. Everyone at the club would like to thank Shane for his work during his time at Oriel Park and wishes him the very best in the future. “The club will conduct a thorough recruitment process for a new manager and will not be making any further comment on the selection process until an appointment is made,” concluded the statement.

Cara and Niall launch virtual fundraiser for Breast Cancer Ireland LOCAL couple Cara McAdam and Niall Carroll have launched a virtual fundraiser for Breast Cancer Ireland. Cara and Niall from Blackrock are hoping 20,000 #pinkarmy participants will take part in the 100k in 30 Days event which raised €1.2 million last year. Niall launched the 100km in 30 Days challenge in aid of Breast Cancer Ireland last June, after Cara was diagnosed with breast cancer just before Christmas 2019.

Niall set a target of raising €100,000. However, the event proved to be a huge success and quickly raised over €1 million for the charity. This year’s event, has a new title sponsor, Sherry Fitzgerald, and is expected to be even bigger and better. People are invited to walk, jog, run or wheel a total of 100km during the month of June to help raise funds. There are around €30,000 worth of prizes to be won

throughout the event including a €3,500 family travel voucher, sponsored by Connect Credit Union, five-star hotel breaks, restaurant vouchers, luxury brands and family days out. €2.8m funding for regeneration works in Omeath

There was some good news for the residents of Omeath on Monday when the Minister for Rural and Community Development, Heather Humphreys TD, announced €2.8m in funding for regeneration works in the village. The project will regenerate and revitalise the centre of Omeath providing a pedestrian zone in the village centre and improved linkages to the Great Eastern Greenway. The project will support the development of the village as a stop-off tourist destination on the greenway, increase footfall and support the creation of visitor-focused local businesses. Omeath District Development Company thanked local TD Peter Fitzpatrick and Louth County Council County Manager Joan Martin for their help and support in securing the funds. “On behalf of the residents of Omeath

Brave Bernie comes to the rescue of teenage girl Dundalk mother of two Bernie Hayden bravely came to the rescue of a young teenage girl last weekend who was being punched and kicked while lying helpless on the ground. Bernie who lives just outside Blackrock was driving down the Longwalk on Saturday evening when she noticed a commotion in the carpark behind the St Vincent de Paul building. A number of female teens were kicking and punching to the young teen who was curled up on the ground as between fifteen to twenty teens looked on recording the incident on camera phones. According to Bernie her maternal instincts kicked in immediately and without really thinking about it she turned her car and drove in to the carpark to come to the aid of the young girl. “I was driving through town with my three year old and six year old in the back of the car when I noticed a big gang of

teenagers cheering in a circle in the car park just before the cinema on the longwalk. I looked in my rear-view mirror as I was passing and I could see a young girl curled up in a ball getting kicked and thumped and I started to shake. I couldn’t believe what they were doing to the poor girl. I did a Uturn at the cinema and drove into the car park right up to the gang. I knew I couldn’t get out of the car as I had my kids with me and I didn’t want

to put them in danger so I just started beeping the horn furiously in the hope that I would scare them and stop the girl from getting beaten up. “All I could think of was my own girls and I would like to think that somebody would help if one of them was getting punched and kick in broad daylight in the town centre. As I was beeping I began to get worried that they might start throwing stuff at the car but thankfully they all dispersed and left the scene. I would say they were between 12 and 15 and almost everyone of them had their phones out recording the fight. It was like a form of entertainment to them seeing a young helpless girl getting assaulted. I was in complete shock and have been replaying the incident in my head for the past few days,” stated Bernie. “As I drove out of the carpark I saw the young girl that had been assaulted hobbling down the road with her friend. She

had blood on her face but I was thankful she had somebody to help her get home. I don’t think kids realise how dangerous it can be to thump and kick somebody who is lying helpless on the ground. All it takes is one kick on the head to do serious damage. As a mother of two young kids it scares me that this is going on in broad daylight and I’m just glad that young girl is ok,” noted Bernie. A statement from the gardaí confirmed an assault had been reported and that they were investigating the matter. “Gardaí are investigating an assault incident that occurred in a car park in the Longwalk area of Dundalk on 17/04/2021 at approximately 7:20pm. A female youth, aged in her early teens, reports to have been assaulted by two other females. “The injured youth attended hospital with non life threatening injuries. Investigations are continuing,” read the statement.

Dundalk Ravens basketball team ready for return to action DUNDALK Ravens Basketball Club Secretary Triona Faapito is “thrilled” the club is finally set to resume next month. After 13 months of being unable to play basketball together, the 120-member strong Dundalk Ravens will return to play on 1st May. “We contacted Colaiste Chu Chulainn Principal Thomas Sharkey and asked about using the courts on the weekends,” said Triona. “He was delighted to

help us and said of course for which we are very thankful. The club is like a big family. A lot of the kids don’t play any other sport so it’s massive for them to be able to get back to basketball. “It’s not just about the sport, it’s about the friendships too. The kids are going to be so happy to see one another again.” Triona added: “The past 13 months has been tough. Really hard. At first it was a novelty having weekends off but now we really want

to get back to it. “We miss the kids and we want to get back coaching. There’s a rapport you have when you are part of something. There’s a connection with the parents and kids. “We’re just happy to be finally getting back. New five-year action plan for apprenticeship launched Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science, Simon Harris, and Minister of State for Skills and Further Education, Niall Collins, have launched the Action Plan for Apprenticeship 2021-2025. The Action Plan sets out a five year strategy to deliver on the Programme for Government commitment of reaching 10,000 new apprentice registrations per year by 2025.

The plan provides a roadmap to a single apprenticeship system and new supports for employers and apprentices. It will also do the following: -create a new National Apprenticeship Office to drive reforms. -a new grant for employers, with a top-up grant for areas of identified national skills needs and/or targeted recruitment of underrepresented groups such as female apprentices,

or lone-parents, people with disabilities, or members of the Travelling community. -non-financial supports targeted to SMEs in areas such as recruitment and supervision of apprentices. -set targets for the public sector to take on apprentices and to create cross-sector apprentices. -examine the potential development of new cross-border apprentice programmes and support apprentice

engagement in international programmes such as Erasmus. Minister Harris said: “People learn in different ways and I want to make sure that everyone is aware apprenticeship can be for them as a route to a qualification into the future. “The overall apprentice population will grow to over 30,000 registered apprentices in the next five years. In particular we want to ensure that

there is equal access for everyone to apprenticeships, irrespective of their background, gender or age. “We have listened to businesses and employers too and will introduce further supports to make it easier to take on an apprentice and offer you the financial support to do so. “This plan has the potential to transform this part of our third level system. Apprenticeship is good for the learner and the employer.”

Fitzpatrick asks for extra financial assistance for those working from homeM Deputy Peter Fitzpatrick has asked the Minister for Finance about additional financial assistance available to businesses to keep their employees working from home and if he has plans to change or amend such incentives. According to the Independent TD people who have been forced to work from home should be entitled to extra financial assistance to convert an area in the home to a proper working space. “One of the main consequences of the current pandemic is that

many people have been forced to work from home,” stated Deputy Fitzpatrick. “Will the Minister explain what measures the Government will make available to these employees who have been forced to work from home, including financial supports to convert an area in the home to a proper working space? Will the Minister confirm what measures will continue to be made available in future? In response Minister for Finance Pascal Donohoe outlined what has already been done by

from home including poor broadband and lack of space. “I have been in contact with many people, including couples, working from home and the common theme is that while working from home, they require more supports and they are not happy with the supports they are getting. These people have needed to adapt certain spaces from which to work. Many people forced to work from home do not have access to reliable broadband, which is absolutely necessary for the vast majority of peo-

ple working from home. I know one person who must wait until near midnight each night in order to send emails and work with other files because the broadband is so congested during peak hours. This is not acceptable and the Government must get real with the rolling out of the national broadband plan. Working from home is likely here to stay and the Government must help people like those I describe to work from home. “People have space in their homes, including garages, spare

due to the Covid-19 pandemic. “In order to protect the health and wellbeing of both patients and staff, BreastCheck was paused between March and end of October 2020 and due to the high levels of COVID-19 in the community, the Programme was paused again in January/February 2021. Since March, BreastCheck has restarted inviting women for routine screening. Senator McGreehan commented, “I am very

worried about missed diagnosis. Breast Cancer is so prevalent however many do recover from the illness. But like every cancer – screening is imperative, and it really can be the difference in life or death. “I have asked that extra resources be given to clear this backlog, a delayed diagnosis is such a worry for so many people. The consequences of this is that the two-tier health system that we have in this country kicks in and if you

The deferred business student from Muirhevnamor is a former two-term DkIT SU Vice President for Student Engagement. “I was with my Grandad on my way to a hospital appointment in Santry when I got a phone call informing me that I’d won the election,” said Christopher. “Myself and my grandfather let out a big cheer in the car. We were delighted with the news, just over the moon. “It’s something I’ve always wanted to do ever since I first started studying at DkIT. I had friends who were SU Presidents and it’s something I wanted to do too.” Christopher added: “I’m delighted I got over the line. It was a

The situation itself was totally avoidable but an experience of a lifetime nonetheless. When all is said and done come June 30th and I head for that exit one last time, all I hope is that I left DkIT Students’ Union in a better place than I found it.

No penalties for cross border travel THE Minister for Justice Helen McEntee has said people living close to the border are entitled to travel 20km from home to the North. It comes as hairdressers and barbers prepare to open in Northern Ireland from Friday, April 23. The Minister for Justice said while no one living on the border will face penalties she appealed to people to behave responsibly.

“For many years it has been very difficult for people who have been assaulted to prove that the reason for the assault has been homophobically, or Transphobically motivated and if they can there is no process for redress, soon that will not be the case and that is great news.” She added: “Here in Dundalk where we have had limited number of serious homophobic or transphobic incidents thankfully, however, we have had some that were obvious to us that they were hate motivated but only someone who is that

victim can really know. “It’s like being assaulted for a second time when you are told it can’t be proven or it was for another reason and not that you are LGB orT it can add to the isolation a person feels and gives you a sense of vulnerability that this can happen and go unchecked or unpunished. “So hopefully going forward people who have experiences like this based on who they are will have the strength and be supported to see their assailants brought to justice.”

Gerry Foran was a member of the Woodpeckers and Paragon 7 at a time when Ireland fell in love with that scene and he had considerable success during the 60’s and 70’s with his bands who played not only throughout Ireland but across the UK and even in the famous Star club in Hamburg which the Beatles made famous during the early 60’s. One of Gerry’s best pals on the local showband scene was Legion Avenue resident Gerry Mathews who sadly passed away earlier this year. According to Gerry Foran his namesake was a lifelong friend and one of the finest singers and performers this town has ever produced. “Gerry was a brilliant singer and a great guy. fore setting up a new band called Paragon 7. Gerry later joined up with ‘The Woodpeckers’ after I had left them and we both had great success nationally and across the pond with our bands. It was a thrilling time playing in front of packed halls wearing fancy suits and all of the razzamatazz that goes along with being in a band. “Myself and Gerry’s paths have crossed many times down through the years and he has been a lifelong friend. Upon hearing of his death I was inspired to put pen to paper and

write a poem in his honour. I have showed it to his lovely wife May and his family and they recently sent me a beautiful card thanking me for the poem. May he rest in peace,” concluded Gerry. Gerry’s tribute to Gerry Mathews can be read below. ‘A gentleman with enormous intelligence and stature, He possesses a talent exceptional and rare, His unquenchable thirst for perfection was unique, An individual with insurmountable pride solidifying his career.

His general leadership qualities were limitless, While his beautiful and cultured voice thrilled his abundant admirers, His single and highclass performances earned elite accolades, His magnetic charm and commanding presence was to rival enviable bands. A conscientious kingpin of the music world, His magnificent yodelling voice was paramount to his success It still echoes through the worlds of dancehalls and ballrooms He will always be remembered as the best’.

With all children now returning to school many of us will see our morning travel patterns change slightly. While you may be busy coping with children desperately trying to avoid the fact that they are back in the classroom, it’s important that you plan ahead for the return of rush hour traffic over the next couple of months but also that you take some time now to make sure your car is in proper running order. To help you get your vehicle ready the AA have put together a list of five helpful tips when ferrying your children to and from school. 1—Check the Condition of your Tyres If your car has been idle for a significant period of time, your tyres may have lost some pressure so checking this ahead of Monday’s school run should be a priority. It is also important to check the current condition of your tyres to ensure they are road-legal. In Ireland, the minimum legal requirement for tyre thread depth is 1.6mm.
