Strike action at DkIT which was scheduled to take place yesterday was lifted following constructive talks between the TUI and the board of management of the college.

Last week the TUI announced that its members in DkIT would take a day’s strike on Tuesday November 19 over a range of concerns including what they saw as the college’s lack of interest in pursuing technological university status.

However, following a meeting on Friday both sides released statements confirming that agreements had been made in writing to ease these concerns which resulted in the strike action being called off. The TUI state-

ment noted that they had received written commitment from DkIT that they would immediately engage in the Technological University process.

“This morning, written commitments were made by DkIT management regarding the TUI’s concerns, including a written commitment to achieving Technological University status and an immediate engagement in the Technological University process. The Institute will also immediately commence engagement with existing TUs and TU consortia with a process of consortium/TU identification to conclude by April 2020.

“Written commitments were also made regarding TUI’s concerns over the functioning of management bodies.

“In the view of the Branch Committee and the TUI Executive Committee, these commitments were sufficient for the TUI to lift the strike action planned for Tuesday November 19. Members are hopeful that the commitments made by management will be adhered to and successfully concluded.

The Irish diabetic team was the brainchild of Dubliner Cathal Fleming who was diagnosed with diabetes four years ago. This led him to create a team specifically for men aged between 18 and 40+ years of age and with the help of Sport Ireland and Diabetes Ireland this led to an Irish national team being formed. The team

played in their first ever international tournament last summer where they finished seventh out of 17 teams in Ukraine.

The team play indoor Futsal which is a variant of association football played on a hard court indoors. It can be considered a version of five-a-side football played a smaller, harder, low-bounce ball at a high intensity using unlimited substitutes. The idea of the championship is to demonstrate that having diabetes does not stop people having an active and full life, which includes playing high intensity sport.

Ultan got on board last March when a neighbour of his read about the newly formed national team online and suggested that he should go for it. That led him to go up to Abbotstown for a number

of trials and after impressing coaches he earned his first cap for the national side earlier this year. According to Ultan he has really enjoyed being a part of the international set up and he is hugely proud to be able to represent his country.

“The lads in the squad are from all over the country and they are great fun and very talented,” noted Ultan.

“Obviously we are all diabetic but for me personally I’ve been living with it since I was two years old and I’ve been able to manage it very well. It hasn’t held me back at all and I’ve played sport to a decent standard since I was a kid.

“We train regularly up in the National Sports Centre in Abbotstown and the standard is pretty good. I wasn’t part of the squad who competed in Ukraine

last summer but I’m hoping to be playing in the next European Championships which will take place in Bosnia Herzegovina in 2020.

“Some people probably think the whole idea of a diabetic football side is a bit strange

or funny but I suppose it sends a message out that this disease should not stop people playing sports and it’s actually pretty important to stay fit to help manage it.

“There’s also a support network there for all the lads involved in the squad where we can

give each other advice and support each other.

I’m very proud to put on the jersey when representing my country and I look forward to getting ready over the next few months for the Euro’s in Bosnia Herzegovina next summer,” added Ultan.

Theft of ATM an ‘attack on the whole community’—McGeough

Sinn Fein councillor Pearse McGeough has condemned last weekend’s theft of an ATM in Dunleer as an ‘attack on the whole community’.

The Bank of Ireland ATM was pulled out of the wall on Main Street, Dunleer by a digger causing a significant amount of damage to the building.

The incident occurred between 3 and 4am in the early hours of Saturday morning and Cllr McGeough has urged anybody with information on the theft to contact gardaí immediately.

“I condemn the criminals responsible for this incident and as I indicated at the Louth County Council meeting on Monday morning it is nothing less than an attack of the whole community of Dunleer as well as it’s hinterlands. This ATM facilitates the whole

community and when criminals target banklinks as they did in this case it means that there is a danger that villages like ours will lose access to these machines. Without access to ATM’s the local economy will inevitably take a hit and this can not be allowed to happen. I would urge anybody who has any information at all in relation to this criminal act to go to the gardaí immediately,” stated Cllr McGeough.

According to a garda statement they arrived at the scene in Dunleer to find a digger and lorry at the scene and they appealed to any road users with camera footage to make contact.

“This morning Saturday 16th November, 2019 at approximately 3.20am Gardaí in Drogheda re-

sponded to a report of a theft of an ATM on the Main Street in Dunleer, Co. Louth. On arrival an ATM had been damaged in a bank premises on the Main Street. A digger and lorry remained at scene. A significant amount of damage was caused to the premises.

“Gardaí are appealing to any person in Dunleer this morning between 3.00am and 4.00am and who saw anything unusual, and to any road users with camera footage, to make contact. Gardaí are also appealing to any person who saw any suspicious vehicles in the Dundalk area at this time.

“Gardaí believe those responsible left the scene in a silver Toyota Land Cruiser with a partial registration of 04-MH heading north of Dunleer.

Gardaí are appealing for any person who saw this vehicle or knows the whereabouts of the vehicle to contact them at Drogheda Garda Station 041 987 4200, the Gardaí Confidential line 1800 666 111 or any Garda station,” concluded the statement.

Meanwhile Bank of Ireland opened as usual on Monday morning in Dunleer and also confirmed that the ATM would be replaced later this week.

“The Dunleer Bank of Ireland branch is open this morning. The financial wellbeing of customers is our priority and while the external ATM is being replaced we are providing additional facilities to alleviate disruption.

“This includes the provision of an additional internal device which will be installed later this week.”

DkIT to celebrate all things 21 for Down Syndrome Ireland

Third-year Digital Marketing and Public Relations degree students are hosting a range of events on Thursday November 21 based around the number 21 to raise awareness and much-needed funds for Down Syndrome Ireland.

The students hope to make as much money as possible for new and existing parents of children with Down syndrome. Fundraising is essential for the charity as less than 15% of the income they receive is from government funding.

The concept for the fundraiser centres around the fact that people with Down Syndrome have an extra copy of chromosome 21 and the events, which kick off at 10am, include ’21-Second Tattoos’, ‘Scoring Baskets in 21 secs’, ‘Ring Toss,’ ‘Strike a Pose for DSI’, ’21-Minute Spin in a Super Car’ ,‘Challenge 21 Cyclethon’ and ’21 Hero Karaoke Songs.’

“We wanted this to be a celebration of the

number 21,” said student Jennifer Ukuta. ‘ “It’s such an important one for Down Syndrome Ireland and it’s an emotional number for us too – some of us turned 21 this year. We felt that it was something we could easily work with,” she added.

Head of Fundraising and Retail for Down Syndrome Ireland Mark O’Doherty will be on campus to oversee the events throughout the

day and he’s delighted that the students have chosen to raise funds for the charity: “Down Syndrome Ireland is the voice of people with Down syndrome and their families throughout Ireland.

With less than 15% State funding, we are very heavily reliant on public fundraising and the generosity of people like the students and staff of DkIT. All funds raised from the student

fundraising activity on November 21 will go towards our range of support services for children and adults with Down syndrome.

We are truly grateful to everyone involved for helping to make a difference,” stated Mark.

Large crowd at St Louis careers fair St Louis enjoyed their Annual Careers Fair on Monday November 11 with the largest representation of Higher Education Institutions to date.

Just in advance of College Awareness Week 2019, colleagues from a diverse section of further educational options were available to take questions and give guidance on potential pathways to students from St Louis, De La Salle, St Mary’s, Colaiste Ris, Ardee Community School, Dundalk Grammar School, and Colaistí Chú Chulainn and Lú.

CAO favourites returned to the fair with representatives from Trinity College Dublin, DCU, DkIT, NCI, UCD, NUI Galway, Griffith College, Portobello, TUD, St Angela’s Sligo, Marino, Maynooth University, Dublin Business School and University of Limerick in attendance.

fair with insights into his own trajectory. He talked of the importance of challenging fear and imagined limitations, the need for self-belief and hard work and the vast array of opportunities both locally and on a global doorstep.

been wider and second level students are more in tune than ever before about vocational possibilities and training.

without. The beauty of Ireland’s framework of qualifications means that everyone can avail of Life Long Learning depending on their individual aspirations, ambitions and circumstances,” stated Mr O’Hanrahan.

Guidance Counsellor Dara Mee was delighted with the event and spoke of the value of the event.

“We are excited to play a part in students’ self-empowerment.

Holding a Fair on a yearly basis makes clear our sense of ambition for students and supplies them with a platform for discussion and clarification. Our recent Eunicas Go Dutch event at St Louis saw great interest in study in Holland at affordable rates,” she added.

Cora Rice added: “It’s a real privilege to have so much expertise on site and we are hugely grateful to all who took the time and effort to be part of the event.

We look forward to building on the interest shown and expanding the event next year.”

Free Workshops in Creativity and Innovation at DkIT The Department of Creative Arts, Media and Music at Dundalk Institute will hold a series of free workshops for children at DkIT on Saturday 30 November with the support of Creative Ireland.

Focusing on the theme of creativity and innovation for young people the proposed creativity-based workshops will give participants the opportunity to engage in a range of artistic areas focusing on the areas of music technology, radio, digital and creative media and STEAM. In line with the pillars of Creative Ireland the workshops seek to nurture creativity in the young people of Co. Louth.

The availability of these workshops will extend access to participants to utilise state of the art facilities in order to explore new concepts and

nurture their creative thinking from a young age. The workshops will take place in the creative facilities in the Carroll Building at Dundalk Institute of Technology including mac labs, recording and editing spaces.

Participation in the workshops will allow participants the opportunity to explore interdisciplinary concepts and topical issues. It is envisaged that the workshops will open the minds of our participants and encourage their development of new ideas.

The workshops are free and open to young people between the age of 7 and 18 Booking is essential as places are limited.

Belleek Pottery have presented the Down Syndrome Centre North East in Carrickmacross with a limited edition handmade pitcher to be given as a prize in their annual Christmas raffle. The pitcher is one of just 750 pieces in the world and is worth approximately €350. All proceeds of the Christmas Draw will be used to fund the various services that are available in the centre in

Carrickmacross for people all over the North East.

Omeath wastewater Fencing is permanently removed from Ardee Castle treatment facility Local Fine Gael TD, Fergus O’Dowd, and Ardee Cathaoirleach Cllr Dolores Minogue, have jointly welcomed the news that the unsightly fencing at Ardee Castle has been permanently removed following a safety inspection.

A response received from Terry Hamilton, Senior Executive Architect outlined that a detailed survey of the external fabric took place by the design team via crane as part of the enabling works.

Following this the design team confirmed that the fencing can be permanently removed.

“The design team have now gathered all necessary information in relation to the buildings needed for the next stage and will be moving into detailed design in the new year,” added Mr Hamilton.

Louth Sinn Féin general election candidate Ruairí Ó Murchú has said that the completion of a new wastewater treatment facility in Omeath is absolutely vital following EPA report.

Councillor Ó Murchú made his remarks today following the release of the ‘Urban Wastewater Treatment Report’ by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) which states that 36 towns and villages across the state are releasing untreated sewage into rivers and seas.

“The EPA report published last week makes for grim reading. “There are six towns in County Louth listed among 120 urban areas where improvements are needed to resolve our environmental priorities. Blackrock, Castlebellingham, Dundalk, Dunleer, Omeath and Tallanstown are all falling short of their environmental obligations “This demonstrates the outworking of the state’s historic failure to invest in wastewater infrastructure. It is not good enough and the EU Commission has already commenced

infringement proceedings against this State for urban waste water treatment infringements. The government must address this issue immediately.

“I have written to Irish Water regarding the progress of the new wastewater treatment facility in Omeath.

Meanwhile, Sinn Féin councillor for the Omeath area, Antóin Watters outlined the seriousness of the situation.

“It’s completely unacceptable that in Omeath, an area of natural beauty, with a strong tourism offering, the equivalent of 800 wheelie bins of raw sewage is being discharged into Carlingford Lough every day.

“I have supported the planning application submitted in March by Irish Water to construct a new treatment plant at Omeath. The application achieved planning approval in July and Irish Water have indicated that this facility should be complete by 2021.

“I will continue to monitor the progress of this essential piece of infrastructure for our area,” he added.

Students of Dundalk Institute of Technology are hosting an exciting event with the aim of raising money for The Birches Alzheimer Day Centre located in Dundalk on Thursday November 28. The event will be hosted by DKIT’s Final Year Business Studies students whereby all proceeds collected are being donated to this important charity.

Alzheimer’s disease is the most common and well-known cause of dementia. Dementia is the name for a range of conditions that cause damage to the brain. This damage can affect memory, thinking, language and the ability to carry

out everyday tasks. For this reason, the students of DKIT wanted to raise awareness of the disease and help raise money to support charities like The Birches.

imer Day Centre is a wonderful charity which offers a range of support to its club members and also to the families of those affected by this damaging disease, offering tireless support

and information on the condition.

The charity event will be held in the main Business building at Dundalk Institute of Technology and will be spread throughout

the day with a range of activities. In the morning, the students will be hosting festive games and carolling, as well as providing a bake sale, In the afternoon, students will then carry

out a 500k Santa Spin which will involve students and lecturers alike cycling on static bikes to try and reach the set distance. Buckets will be available at this event and all proceeds would be greatly appreciated.

In the evening, the students have also planned a virtual horseracing event which will be held in the Malt House. This will entail friendly betting with all proceeds going towards the charity. Finally, an 80’s/90’s night will be held in Ridleys Niteclub with a percentage of the door price being donated.

Dundalk Social Service Council pay respects to Pattie Sloan A meeting of Dundalk Social Service Council, held November 11, was adjourned as a mark of respect for the late Mrs Pattie Sloan, with John Hennessy (Chairman) speakihg on behalf of the council.

As Committee member and Treasurer of the Council, Pattie was involved with Dundalk Social Service Council since its inception in 1972 and was one of the main driving forces behind the Meals on Wheels organisation, along with her

husband Gerard, who held responsibility for the cooking and delivery of meals to recipients via a rota of volunteer drivers. Pattie and Gerard were also active fundraisers for Dundalk Social Service Council and played a valuable role in the annual church gate collection.

The Jenkinstown Project Committee held a very successful Community Footpath fundraiser in the Ballymascanlon on Saturday night.

Dundalk Snooker League hold presentation night

THE Dundalk Snooker League presentation for last year’s league took place on Wednesday night in the commercial club.

All winners and losers were presented with their trophies and all players enjoyed a great night celebrating and looking forward to the new season.

Cobra Kan success at world championships Cobra Kan headed off to the states to fight in the World Kickboxing and Karate Championships earlier this month which took place in Buffalo, New York. Chief instructor Patricia McQuillan lead her team of six to New York with great confidence that her fighters would do her proud on the international stage.

On day one Patrick Mulligan was first up on the mats and he was skilful and tactical right from the offset.

He fought against an English fighter and both men were very well matched for each other.

Unluckily for Patrick a few referee calls didn’t go his way which meant he got the loss.

However, Patrick kept his head held high as he knew he done his best and had another section the follow day to compete in.

Next up was the youngest Cobra Kan member to be abroad, Caolan O’Murchu who took on a very experienced Canadian fighter in his opening round.

Although Caolan worked hard to close the gap throughout the fight he couldn’t claw back the points and unfortunately lost to his more experienced opponent.

Next up was well seasoned international fighter Sarah Gray who fought an experienced Canadian and fought very hard where it went point for point between them. When time ended it was a draw which meant the bout went to

extra time. The Canadian took the first point in extra time, both girls fought hard and a call was made which gave the Canadian her second point to get the win.

Oisin Myles then made it through to the semi-final stage to earn himself a bronze medal.

Day two saw Cian O’Mhurchú up first in the 35+ section but for some reason Cian never truly got going against the Mexican fighter

and was defeated. He bounced back to claim the wins needed to reach the semi-final but Cian didn’t get the win but he gained so much experience during the bout, not to mention a world bronze medal.

Next to the mats was Patrick Mulligan for his second section of the tournament. Patrick obtained an injury from his earlier fight on his foot however which hampered him allowing his American oppo-

nent to win with ease.

However, Patrick will be pleased to leave the championship with a world bronze medal.

Domynkas Svedas was the last fighter up on day two and having won gold at the world’s two years previously he was eager to get his title defence up and running.

He made it through to the finals day but was unlucky to lose out in the decider meaning he had to settle for a silver medal.

Community Fundraiser

This weekend sees the Frostival Winter Festival arrive in Dundalk Town Centre with plenty of things to do for all the family. The festival takes place on Friday November 22 and Saturday 23 and this year’s theme is ‘Carnival of Light’. The Frostival Parade promises to be an awe-inspiring celebration of arts, culture and Christmas fun featuring beautifully lit floats, stilt and fire performers, an aerialist, dancers in breath-taking costumes and much much more.

The parade will start at the Longwalk SC and travel via Church Street, Clanbrassil Street, Crowe Street, Francis

Street, Park Street and Magnet Road before returning to the Longwalk SC. There will also be Christmas Markets, a Little Elves Fun Zone, Santa’s Grotto, Frostival Express Train and a Family Treasure Hunt at Market Square.

The schedule of events at Market Square is as follows: Friday: 11am – 6pm Dundalk Christmas Market; 4 – 7:30pm Santa’s Grotto at Market Square; 4 – 7:30pm Little Elves Fun Zone; 6 – 6:45pm Accidents in the Workplace; 6:45 to 7pm Switching on Christmas tree & street lights; 7pm Carnival of Light Frostival Parade.

Taisce Lú is an initiative of Create Louth.

The Visual Art Collection of Louth County Council is a rich resource for the county.

As the collection is accessible to the public only in a limited number of public buildings throughout

the county, Create Louth is always keen in making Taisce Lú more real and relevant to the people of Louth.

Preview reception takes place on Thursday November 21 at 7pm and all are welcome.

-Sinn Féin general election ycandidate Ruairí Ó Murchú nhas attended a visit to Sruthán rHouse by Minister of State for Disabilities, Finian McGrath.

During the Ministerial visit, -which took place earlier tokday, Minister McGrath voiced his commitment to keeping Sruthán House open.

Councillor Ó Murchú said,“I

have fully supported the campaign for the retention of respite services at Sruthán House.

“The people who stay in Sruthán House and their families are a community and since closure was threatened they have voiced their overwhelming support for the facility.

“Last month I attended a specially convened meeting

during which the HSE confirmed that, following a period of consultation, the decision had been made to keep Sruthán House open.

“The Minister’s visit and comments today have further demonstrated the success of the campaign mounted by service users when faced with the possibility of closure.

“I understand that there are a number of actions which the HSE will now undertake to ensure that Sruthán House will provide the optimum service and value for money.

“I will do everything I can to ensure the excellent service provided by staff at Sruthán House is maintained and enhanced.”

Success for CúChúlainn Archers CúChúlainn Archers have been extremely busy in recent weeks and are exceptionally proud to announce the following achievements.

Congratulations to Éamonn Rogers on winning Gold in the Men’s Compound category at the All Ireland Series Finals. During strong winds, it took a very cool head for Éamonn to stay focused to the very last arrow to take the title. Deirdre Rogers took the Bronze in the Women’s Compound category.

In the Nationals, Éamonn placed third in the Men’s Compound, Brendan Forde finished

with a well deserved sixth place in the Gents Recurve and in the Women’s Compound round, Deirdre Rogers took sixth place, Adria Quinn was beaten to fifth place by teammate Christina O’Sullivan who came fourth.

Christina then joined with Éamonn for the Team Compound Event and both took home a Bronze Medal. Éamonn has also been awarded a new Irish record for 60 arrows with a score of 563. Deirdre Rogers set two new Irish records in the Womens Compound category with a score of 261 with 30 arrows and 507 with 60

arrows, shot in the same competition.

Finally, John Keenan has been awarded the distinction of Lifetime Honorary Member of Archery Ireland in light of his tremendous wins in World Archery, having won 2 World Titles and a bronze in a third in one week.

€338,000 for improvements to Louth towns and villages Some €338,000 has been allocated for improvements to four towns and villages around Louth, a Fine Gael Councillor has said.

Cllr. John McGahon said: “This funding is extremely welcome news for Louth especially residents of Greenore, Blackrock, Darver and Termonfeckin.

“I am delighted to confirm that Greenore has received funding of €100,000 to build a footpath to link Greenore Village and existing footpaths with Greenore Port and Carlingford Ferry.

Blackrock has received €100,00 for the installation of additional phase of footpaths and public lighting

on the Rock Road, an issue which my colleague Cllr.

Maria Doyle has worked very hard on to secure.

Termonfeckin has recieved €100,000 to upgrade the footpath from the village to Seapoint Beach and Darver has received €38,000 for an upgrading of the community centre.

“These excellent initiatives will ensure our smaller towns and villages are more attractive and sustainable places in which to live and work.

“The funding, allocated under the Town and Village Renewal Scheme, is a key part of the Action Plan for Rural Development and the

Government’s Project Ireland 2040 Programme for Rural Regeneration.

“The benefit of previous funding under the Town and Village Renewal Scheme is now being felt countrywide and I am delighted today that even more areas in Louth will benefit from the funding.

“Almost €68 million has now been approved for more than 830 projects across the country under the Town and Village Renewal Scheme since it was introduced in the second half of 2016, with more than 600 of these approved since the Action Plan for Rural Development was launched in January 2017.”

Louth Represented at Second DkIT choir provide musical treat Annual Gaelic Players Association Rookie Camp

Louth hurlers Padraig Fallon, Matthew Fee, Darren Geoghegan, Liam Molloy and Feidhelm Joyce were among over 100 Gaelic Players Association (GPA) and Women’s Gaelic Players Association (WGPA) members who descended on the Johnstown Estate in Enfield in County Meath on Saturday November 9 for the second annual GPA Rookie Camp. The event is aimed at players who have recently made the step up to senior inter-county panels, as a tool to help them balance their playing, study, work and personal lives.

The recent GPA report A Juggling Act: An Insight Into The Lives of Student Inter-County GAA Players highlighted how players are struggling to balance their playing and study commitments and recommended the further development of the GPA Rookie Camp and its promotion to young players from squads across the country.

The theme of the day was Preparing the Person Behind the Player in recognition of the fact that, while they may be known for their performances on GAA fields the length and breath of the country, this is not what defines them

as people. Induction programmes, such as the GPA Rookie Camp, are recognised worldwide in elite sport as a fundamental aspect of an athlete’s transition from development squad to elite level.

Speakers on the day included Dublin Senior Footballer and sports psychologist Kevin McManamon who delivered sessions on Building Resilience; Associate Professor of Sport and Exercise Physiology in the School of Health and Human Performance at Dublin City University Dr. Brendan Egan who concentrated on Nutrition Education; Kieran File who is the Assistant Professor at the University of Warwick and who spoke to Healthy and Harmful Social Media; and Performance Coach Declan O’Connell who took the attendees through workshops on Personal Development.

Attendees were also provided with practical education and information on their responsibilities around anti-doping which was delivered by Siobhan Leonard from Sport Ireland and Irish Canoeist Jenny Egan.

The day was divided into a mix of group information sessions and smaller interactive workshops

where players could discuss common challenges that they face in their burgeoning inter-county careers.

Speaking about the event GPA CEO Paul Flynn said; “I know from my own experience that when I have balance in my life, I am better positioned to perform on the field of play. We want to assist all our members to find this balance. The GPA Rookie Camp is great opportunity to introduce new members to their association and provide practical tools and information about how best to maximise their time as an inter-county player on and off the field.”

This was the second year of the Rookie Camp with WGPA members attending for the first time.

Chairperson of the WGPA Maria Kinsella said; “We were delighted to join with the footballers and hurlers from the GPA at the Rookie Camp for the first time, in exploring what a modern inter-county lifestyle looks like for our young players. We want our players to reach their full potential while staying healthy, mindful and fulfilled throughout and the Rookie Camp represents a step on that journey.”

The DkIT choir will help provide a musical treat for U2 fans as musicians Brendan Raeburn and Nigel Connell bring their orchestral and choral interpretation of The Joshua Tree to Dublin’s Liberty Hall this month.

The concert with Glass House Orchestra and the DKIT Choir, follows the release of the first single Red Hill Mining Town, from the forthcoming album Beyond the Music Reimagines The Joshua Tree.

Three years have gone into perfecting perfection. Ahead of the album launch early next

year, the duo undertook a seemingly impossible project to transpose musical genres, and go beyond the music with some of the world’s greatest albums.

Beginning their quest, choosing arguably one of the 20th centuries most seminal albums, Brendan and Nigel worked with producer and arranger Mark Cahill (producer & musical director on 3 x Multi-Platinum Discs and a No.1 Billboard Album) to score and arrange a complete orchestration of The Joshua Tree, while honouring the structure and genius of

U2’s original music, vocal and sound.

For Nigel and Brendan the challenge was to find the orchestra who understood how to reimagine and revere. The Glass House Orchestra will raise the roof of Liberty Hall for this Dublin gig, just as the award-winning Prague FILMharmonic Orchestra have with Beyond the Music on the album. Proving to this first of many audiences that perfection won’t be perfected only reimagined in a way to take you into and beyond the music.

Encore Productions is presenting a new show at An Táin Arts Centre A new adaptation

by An Táin Arts Centre’s Company in Residence, Encore Productions, of ‘Mother Courage and her Children’ by Bertold Brecht will be staged at the end of this month.

Join Mother Courage in this tale of survival as she drags her wagon and her children to the front lines and beyond.

Brecht’s original play takes a hard look at the bloody business of war.

This version brings the playwright himself into the cast as he shines a cold light on the ideas behind the action. The production combines stunning video, atmospheric sound design and passionate performances to tell a tale for our times.

“An Táin Arts Centre’s theatre residency programme supports companies with the resources to make new

work. As part of the residency, companies are provided with rehearsal space, technical and marketing support, dramaturgical advice and a production stipend, this is the first year of a three year residency with

Encore and we are really looking forward to the production,” he stated.

The cast and crew of Encore Productions all attend RehabCare Resource Centre in Dundalk, under the leadership of Artistic Director, Sandy Sneddon, who spoke about the value of the project.

“This residency is the culmination of many years of hard work by all the service users and staff at RehabCare in Dundalk.

For the actors to have their skills recognised in this way is a validation of their talents and efforts,” he stated.

Mother Courage is on November 27 to 29.

AA ADVICE ON DRIVING DURING HEAVY RAIN

Peter McCaughey (20) won Sunday’s 14 Hole Singles Stableford competition with an excellent score of 34pts.

But thoughts of victory were far from his mind after he walked off the first hole having failed to score.

A two point bogey at the second got him on the board and pars at the next three holes yielded a haul of 10pts which put him right back in the competition.

A two point bogey at the par five sixth was followed by three point pars at the seventh and

eighth before he finished the front nine with a two point bogey for an impressive 22pts heading into the final four holes.

Two points were gained at both the 10th and 11th before he parred the par five 12th for three points and bogeyed the par three 13th for two points.

He then jumped from the 13th to the 18th for the 14th hole of his round and a three point par on the last was enough to take McCaughey beyond the three players who finished up on a total of 33pts and give him the overall victory.

Mickey Coburn (10) was one of those on 34pts and he took Category 1 by a point from Charlie Monahan (10) while Brian Crombie (19) needed a countback that went back to the final two holes before he edged out Gerry Byrne (19) after both had finished on 33pts in Category 2.

Conor Byrne (21) took Category 3 with 32pts from Anthony McGuinness (20) who finished with 31pts while the evergreen Peter Rogers went around in 28pts for the day’s best gross score.

With the recent localised flooding in throughout the country it’s no harm to follow the advice of AA Roadwatch on flooded stretches of road.

If flooding does occur, the best bet is to avoid badly affected routes if possible.

Reduce your speed and double the distance between you and the car in front. Separately, check out some tips from our AA Rescue team for driving in flooded areas.

If the steering becomes unresponsive due to surface water beneath your tyres ease off the accelerator until the car comes to a gradual halt.

Don’t drive through flood water unless you’re sure of its depth.

Allow oncoming traffic to pass through the flood water first

waiting for the water to settle before you drive through.

Drive through at a slow steady speed to avoid creating a bow wave.

Keep the engine rev’s high by using a lower gear, otherwise water in the exhaust could damage the catalytic convertor.

ALMOST 1 IN 8 DISTRACTED BY PASSENGERS WHILE DRIVING

Almost 1 in 8 Irish motorists admit to having been involved in a near miss or an incident after being distracted by the actions of a passenger while driving, recent research has found.

In response to an AA Car Insurance survey of over 6,000 motorists, 12.32% of respondents admitted that they had been involved in either a near miss or a collision after being distracted.

In total, 10.38% admitted to being involved in at least one near miss, with 0.94% having found themselves involved in a single collision as a result of passenger distraction.

The survey also found that 0.43% of respondents had been involved in two collisions because a passenger had distracted them, with 0.57% having been involved in three or more distraction-caused incidents.

“We’re moving into what is a danger our time on Irish roads, as the combination of reduced daylight and

poor weather conditions that we see during winter can lead to an increase in accidents – particularly in the morning and evening rush hour period where fatigue can also be a contributory factor. As we move closer to the festive season and the shopping rush, many of us will also find ourselves driving at times we are less accustomed to or rushing and racing from location to location, which further adds to the risk,” Conor Faughnan, AA Director of Consumer Affairs stated. “With this in mind, it’s important that passengers are aware of

the dangers associated with driving and the need for the motorist to remain fully focused on the task at hand. While ultimate responsibility lays with the motorist, passengers must be aware of how their actions could interfere with the driver and, for the parents out there, now is a good time to have a discussion with your children about the important of behaving well while in the car.”

The survey found that in incidents where a driver had been distracted by a passenger leading to either a near miss or a collision, children were often the

number one culprit.

Of those who admitted to being distracted by a passenger while driving, 43.85% stated that the passenger at fault was one or more of their children. Meanwhile, almost a quarter of those involved in a near miss or collision as a result of a passenger distraction pointed the finger of blame at their spouse or partner.

22.68% “It can be a little tougher to manage a child’s behaviour in a car as sudden illnesses or fights with siblings could break out at any moment. As a parent, your first instinct will be to attend to your children and try to resolve the issue, but this momentary lapse of concentration could greatly increase your risk of being involved in an accident. Ultimately, it’s better to pull in at a safe spot and attend to your child before continuing your journey instead of trying to juggle the tasks of driving and parenting,” Faughnan added.
