School promotes healthy living

St Nicholas National School, Nicholas Street, became the latest school in the country to be presented with the Healthy Ireland -‘Health Promoting Schools’ Flag’.

The Healthy Ireland - Health Promoting Schools’ (HPS) Flag’ is presented by the HSE to schools as an acknowledgement of their work in improving the health of their school communities.

The programme supports schools to focus on health and wellbeing and involves all members of the school community.

Dundalk’s Special Olympians returned home to a heroes’ welcome after securing a magnificent 29 medals over the weekend.

The Special Olympics All-Ireland Games took place in Dublin last weekend, as the event attracted a total of 1,600 special Olympic athletes from all over Ireland to compete in a total of 13 sports at the games.

Dundalk was represented by two clubs at the games. Dundalk Special Olympic Club had 17 athletes competing while St Therese had seven athletes taking part in the national games over the weekend.

Magnificent displays by local athletes at Special Olympics

Dundalk’s Special Olympians returned home to a heroes’ welcome after securing a magnificent 28 medals over the weekend.

The Special Olympics AllIreland Games took place in Dublin last weekend and the event attracted a total of 1,600 special Olympic athletes from all over Ireland to compete in a total of 13 sports at the games.

Dundalk was represented by two clubs at the games. Dundalk Special Olympic Club had 17 athletes competing while St. Therese had seven athletes taking part in the national games over the weekend.

Three action packed days of sports were to follow with athletes competing in numerous sporting categories.

The Dundalk heroes took part in several events such as swimming, athletics, football, bowling, golf and bocce. Both local clubs were extremely successful taking home a large collection of medals and ribbons.

The Dundalk Special Olympics club took home an impressive tally of ten gold medals, seven silver medals and five bronze.

Meanwhile the St Therese club also shone in their categories with two gold medals, two silver medals and two bronze medals.

The athletes clearly excelled and were extremely competitive throughout the competition. The three-day event required early starts to be prepared and ready for the bus transfer at 7am with days running late into the evenings.

There was great excitement travelling across the city by bus as teams arrived daily at the different competitions.

This year’s event aimed to create an Olympic Games environment with different events, cultural activities and entertainment for the competing athletes, their families and friends.

The athletes had a fantastic time over the weekend with winners being presented with

medals by well-known TV presenters, sports stars and actors while Tánaiste Simon Coveney was also present at the event. The All-Ireland Divers team were also present to give their support to swimmers and other competing athletes over the weekend.

All members of the Dundalk group, including family members and carers had a great positive experience at the games, it was extremely exciting time and capped off with an entertaining disco to celebrate the success.

A Civic Reception which will be held in County Hall, Millennium Centre today, Wednesday evening June 20 at 7pm.

An 18-year-old man arrested as part of the investigation into the murder of Cameron Reilly in Dunleer has been released without charge.

The man, who is understood to have been known to the victim, was arrested on Friday morning and taken to Drogheda Garda Station for questioning.

The male was released on Saturday and a file is currently being prepared for the DPP. Cameron Reilly was last seen in the vicinity of Ardee Road, Dunleer at around 12.30am on Saturday, 26 May. The 18-year-old’s body was found in a field on the edge of the town at 8am that morning and a post-mortem examination revealed that he had been strangled.

Detectives have also appealed for help locating Mr Reilly’s mobile phone as the believe the Apple iPhone 8 could be crucial to the investigation.

Gardaí have interviewed all the friends of the Dundalk Institute of Technology student who were socialising with him on the night of his murder.

Officers have stressed from early in the investigation that they believe the answer to who was involved in Cameron’s death lies close to the town of Dunleer.

Banned from driving A man who pleaded guilty to driving with cannabis in his system was banned from the road for four years at Dundalk District Court.

Patrick Clarke (33) of Mayne Road, The Lynns, Annagassan, told the court that he had taken cannabis

at night and the following morning, (March 10), he was stopped by Gardai.

The defence solicitor stated that the single man had been going through a difficult time but was now employed in construction and seeing a counsellor.

Collection for Famine Graveyard The Dundalk Graveyard Association is holding a flag day in Dundalk on Saturday June 30 to help raise funds to restore the famine graveyard at Killally on the Ardee Road.

The Dundalk Graveyard Association is a group of volunteers who came together in 2000 with the sole purpose of restoring the Famine Graveyard to a dignified condition.

The group plans to rebuild the surrounding walls which have been overgrown and have collapsed in places.

The cemetery was opened in 1852 in the aftermath of the Famine to cater for the increasing number of dead bodies, some of whom sought refuge in the nearby workhouse. Famine victims were initially buried adjacent to the

workhouse until the demand for burial space increased.

The graveyard catered for all denominations but contains no headstones or any symbols depicting the burial plots.

The one-acre site was closed in 1905 and remained largely neglected until 2000 when the Dundalk Graveyard Association was formed.

Blooms trip for CBS primary school

Twenty-eight pupils from 4th Class in CBS primary school travelled to the Bloom festival in the Phoenix Park on Friday June 1, accompanied by their teacher Sinead Sheridan and their SNA Briege McGoldrick.

The class won free entry to the festival through Agri Aware’s In-

credible Edibles programme. The young pupils had a busy day exploring the show gardens and the Budding Bloomers section where they saw a magic show, a giant food pyramid and of course had plenty of free healthy food samples.

After having an outdoor picnic

there was a free tour provided by Agri Aware. The tour started at the food stall with a talk on healthy eating and a hands-on demonstration show casing fruit platters.

There was then an opportunity to view and learn about the livestock animals, including pigs, cows and sheep,and to meet the farmers.

Louth women affected by Cervical Check Controversy Sinn Féin councillor Ruairí Ó Murchú has said that he is extremely concerned by information from the HSE which reveals that nine women from County Louth are affected by the Cervical Check controversy.

Speaking after attending a recent Standing4Women event in the Market Square, Cllr Ó Murchú said that a response to a parliamentary question from

Gerry Adams had indicated that nine women from Louth are among the group of 209 women across the state whose cervical check audit found that initial screening had failed to detect cancer.

“The people of Dundalk have come out in numbers to demonstrate their solidarity with these women who were failed by this State both in the failure to diagnose their illness and subsequent attempts to cover up that fact.

“This was mirrored throughout the State in other similar demonstrations.

“The discovery that nine women from this county should have had earlier medical interven-

tions is gravely concerning.

“I hope that these women are being afforded all appropriate supports and that they will go on to make full recoveries,” he stated.

“Standing4Women have called for active and independent support for those affected by the scandal, including and not limited to, an immediate point of contact for those affected, and a multidisciplinary support team. I support their call,” added Mr Ó Murchú who pointed out that Standing4Women have also proposed mandatory open disclosure within the HSE. “Earlier this month Sinn Féin introduced a private members mo-

tion calling on the government to introduce such mandatory open disclosure in the HSE. It is not acceptable to traumatise people even more by drip feeding information or by forcing them through the courts to get to the truth.

“The recent referendum result demonstrated that Irish women are demanding that their healthcare needs are met.

“This event and the previous ‘Feet on the Street’ demonstration indicates that the people of County Louth are firmly behind those affected by this most recent controversy surrounding the cervical check programme,” he concluded.

Brendan in fine form as he takes the honours at Dundalk Golf Club

A former Men’s Captain, Brendan Keane, was the winner of Lady Captain Pat Cleary’s Prize to the Men on Sunday when he shot a four under par 68 to win by one shot.

He took full advantage of an early start which allowed him to miss the rain that descended on many of the later starters and made a tough blue course even tougher in the windy conditions.

Brendan finished one shot ahead of Mark Browne (16), Danny Miele (11) and Barry O’Hanrahan (20) who all finished on 69 and had to be separated on countback.

Browne, who has been cut six shots already this year, prevailed with a better back nine and his handicap will continue to plummet. Miele took Category One while O’Hanrahan won Category Three and Declan Muckian (14) claimed Category Two after a 70.

Aaron Grant (+2) produced an excellent round of level par 72 to win the gross prize while another former captain, Dermot Duffy (25), took the Veteran’s Prize with a one-under par 71.

by Tony Ryan (13) and Liam O’Reilly (8) with a score of 24pts.

Caolan Rafferty will tee it up this week alongside 288 of the world’s best amateur golfers at the British Amateur Championship which is being played at Royal Aberdeen and Murcar Links in Scotland. The winner will secure a spot in the British Open at Carnoustie in July. Last year Caolan won the silver medal for leading qualifier.

Rafferty, who has been named on the Great Britain & Ireland squad for the biennial St Andrews Trophy match against Continential Europe which will be played on July 26 and 27 in Linna Golf Club, Finland. The final team will announced after the European Men’s Team Championship next month.

Clem Walshe finished joint 13th at the Ulster Seniors Amateur Open which was held last week in Rosapenna.

There were mixed fortunes for Dundalk Golf Club teams last Saturday but two teams managed to progress to the next stage of their respective competitions.

The Mixed Foursomes team defeated Greenore on Saturday

but the ladies Minor team saw their run come to an end at the hands of Ashbourne in a match played in Beaverstown.

The Jimmy Bruen team, managed by Fergal Harte and Clem Walshe, qualified for the regional semi-final in a blustery Roganstown Golf Club.

The new look line up featured many of Dundalk’s young up and coming players who showed maturity beyond their years to get the job done and ensure the club qualified for the section semi-final which will be played against Balbriggan on Sunday next, June 24, at 8am in Roganstown. The regional final will be played that afternoon against the winners of Forrest Little and Co Louth at 2pm.

Balbriggan were the leading qualifiers on 336, which was five ahead of Forest Little and Co Louth on 341 with Dundalk a shot further back on 342.

This Thursday, the Ladies Revive Active team face Ardee in the Third Round of the competition at 3.30pm with the three matches in Dundalk while at 4pm the All-Ireland Fourball team will meet Malahide In the Leinster quarter-finals with three of the five matches at home.

Births, deaths and marriages office re-opens The Births, Deaths and Marriages office in Dundalk has re-opened following its temporary closure due to staff shortages earlier this year and it is a move welcomed by Sinn Fein councillor Anne Campbell.

they are extending the appointment service on Tuesdays and Friday afternoons 2pm to 4pm from June 11.

At the moment, the opening hours are as follows: Walk in service Mondays & Wednesdays 10:30am – 12:30pm and 2pm – 3.30pm; Appointments only on Tuesdays, Thursdays & Fridays

Global ambitions for North East Start-Ups The official launch of Phase 2 of the New Frontiers Entrepreneur Development Programme took place recently at Dundalk Institute of Technology (DkIT).

New Frontiers is Enterprise Ireland’s Entrepreneur Development Programme for early stage start-ups and is delivered at a local level by the Regional Development Centre.

Phase 2 brings together 15 ambitious start-ups from Louth, Monaghan and surrounding counties. The programme has a single vision, to

grow and scale a business that will trade internationally.

Over the next six months the businesses will receive intensive business training, financial support and mentorship from Enterprise Ireland as well as having full access to the research facilities and expert panels of both DkIT and DCU Invent. With a total of 53 applications being received, the 15 start ups recruited had to undergo a rigorous selection process to secure their place on the programme.

Speaking at the launch, Aidan McKenna, Enterprise Ireland’s Regional Director for the North East & North West Region, said “The New Frontiers Programme is an excellent platform to develop, test and grow a fledgling start-up idea while also gaining advice and support from mentors, industry experts and peers on the Programme.’

IWA Boccia Finals

The Irish Wheelchair Association National Boccia Finals will be held in Dundalk Sports Centre on June 28 starting at 11.30am.

The event is in its third year with numbers from IWA centres nationally growing each year with over 200 members with disabilities entering. A total of 32 IWA centres representing 23 counties took part in six regional qualifiers competing in a team competition and a singles competition.

Boccia can be played by individuals, pairs, or teams of three. The aim of the game is to throw leather balls as close as they can to a white target ball, or jack.

Elizabeth is best in Leinster Elizabeth Wallace, a First Year student in Coláiste Lú, travelled to Dublin to receive her prize for first place in Leinster for the Junior Cycle category of the Central Bank’s Design a Coin competition, celebrating 75 years of Central Bank.

At the ceremony Elizabeth received her award from the Governor of Central Bank, Philip Lane.

Elizabeth’s piece entitle ‘The Changeover’ depicts an old Punt coin and a Euro coin held in front of the old Central Bank building,

representing the changeover of the currency in 2002.

Siúbhan Ní Leannáin, Elizabeth’s art teacher was beaming with pride.

“There was a vast amount of entries from the province and everybody in Coláiste Lú is very proud of Elizabeth’s win,” said Ms Ní Leannáin.

Elizabeth’s design was also awarded a special mention for the overall national prize with judges praising its use of symbols significant to the Central Bank - the Punt, euro, Crann an Oir and the iconic Dame Street Elizabeth Wallace receiving her award building.

Youth group up for national award A local youth club is calling on its local community for support ahead of the Irish Cancer Society’s national XHALE Youth Awards 2018 in July.

Dundalk Youth Centre is asking people to log on to cancer.ie/xhale2018 and watch its short film about being ‘smoke free’. The film with the most views between now and July 4 will win the public vote and a national award as part of the X-HALE Short Film Competition 2018.

X-HALE is an initiative of the Irish

Cancer Society that supports young people to tackle smoking and raise awareness about the dangers of smoking among their peers.

The X-HALE Youth Awards national showcase event in the Helix, Dublin on July 5 will be the finale of months of hard work by the youth groups. In addition to promoting their films online, they will also be running campaigns to drum up local support by putting up posters, organising screenings of their films and taking part in

radio interviews.

This is the eighth year of the XHALE Youth Awards. Forty three youth groups from around the country are taking part in 2018. This year participating groups also had the opportunity to have their say on how young people can become more involved in making the tobacco free generation a reality. A number of groups attended a workshop and the Tobacco Free Ireland Partners’ Conference on World No Tobacco Day.

Cooley Mountain Trek on Sunday

The ever popluar Cooley Mountain Trek in aid of Fighting Blindness will take place on Sunday July 1 this year.

Eric Beggs has been involved in raising funds for over a decade and last year alone raised €8570 from this event, bringing the total he has raised to in excess of €130,000.

The Fighting Blindness group is very close to Eric’s heart as the Lisdoo man was diagnosed with a retinal degenerative condition called retinitis pigmentosa (RP) which unfortunately can’t be cured. Eric first started having difficulties with his sight in his early 20s and it has progressed to the stage that now in his 60s he is completely blind.

He is calling on all walkers to support the trek to help continue the great work that has been done in recent years.

“Fighting Blindness have been doing great work and in recent times have made a lot of significant breakthroughs, especially with age-related problems. It is essential that they get funds to continue this work and the more support we get the better.

This year’s Cooley Mountain Trek will take place on Sunday July 1 with the 10km walk starting at 11am (for more experienced walkers) and the 5km walk starting at Noon. The route is a looped walk which begins at the Lumpers in Ravensdale. A free bus will leave Dundalk at the Lisdoo car park at 10:30 for the 11am walk and 11:30 for the Noon walk.

Boxers see benefit from new club facilities

The new facilities being enjoyed by O’Hanlon Park boxers have certainly paid dividends with competitors celebrating their most successful period ever in the ring.

The official opening of the O’Hanlon Park Boxing Club premises at the Long Walk in November last year was the culmination of a lot of hard work by the committee.

Recent events have proved that all the effort was worthwhile as in just over six months since they made the move they can now boast their most successful spell in the ring for many years.

A total of eight young boxers have earned immediate reward for their

work in the state-of-theart gym by claiming a host of local, provincial and national titles, while membership has also increased dramatically.

The successful boxers included Nicole McCabe, Nicole Shearman, CJ McGuinness, Jessica Shearman, Keith Brady, Hughie McGinley, Michael Fernandes, Christopher Wykes and Belaoil Elyaqut.

Coach Paul Taaffe revealed that he is delighted to see the benefits of the new gym being reflected in the progress made in the ring.

“Since Christmas we have excelled in many competitions including the Louth Open, Armagh & Down, and Leinster along with the

more recent Irish Championships this month.

“All this has happened since the new gym was opened and it is one of the biggest groups to win in years,” explained Paul.

“I would have to say we are more than delighted with what we have achieved and not only have we had success but the club as a whole is flying with over 150 boxers now training on a regular basis.

“The new facilities are certainly helping so once again we have to thank John Fitzpatrick for his contribution.

Having the new facilities means that we are getting more time with the boxers and that has made a massive difference,” added Paul.

Students raise awareness about Autism assistance dogs

Short videos and social media were used in the ‘Paws For Thought’ project by final year Creative Arts, Media and Music students to raise awareness of the issues around getting an Autism assistance dog and educating the public on how to treat them.

Matthew Turnbull (21) from Clogherhead explained the reason behind the project was that it became clear to thems that is there is not one clear model for getting an assistance dog.

“You have to start with your doctor and get a form signed and then there are three different associations,” he explained.

“Once on a waiting list it can take up to two years for a suitable dog to be found and in that period, you are expected to do some kind of fundraising while on the waiting list,” added Matthew.

Drogheda said, “We also found that waiting lists can open and close. Sometimes it takes so long that the child grows out of the age where they need the dog. Sometimes they just miss their opportunity.”

Aisling Conlon (22) said that to raise awareness and educate people about assistance dogs, they did a series of five ‘Did You Know?,’ videos and then a sixth one on the cost to raise

awareness and let people know what these issues are.

CBOI taking on new members

The Cross Border Orchestra of Ireland provides exceptional performance opportunities for young people, coupled with orchestral training which is second to none.

If you are a young musician between the ages of 13 and 24 years, who is passionate about music, not afraid of hard work and commitment and wants to work with likeminded young people, now is your chance to become part of one of Ireland’s leading cultural initiatives.

The CBOI also undertakes regular international concert tours and in the past, has performed in many top venues throughout the world including Carnegie Hall New York, and the Royal Albert Hall, London, Chicago Symphony Hall, the Oriental Arts Centre Shanghai and the World Trade Expo Shanghai.

The CBOI accepts members from all over Ireland and Northern Ireland. Although the majority of members are between the ages of 13 and 24 years, they also consider applications from accomplished adults who would value the exceptional opportunities provided by the CBOI. Rehearsals take place on three Sundays per month from September to January, in the Carnbeg Hotel, Armagh Road, Co. Louth or in the DkIT. Concerts take place over five weekends from January to March.

A week-long workshop takes place in August and during the Christmas holidays.

CBOI is in recess from mid-March until August to facilitate exams. All orchestral instrumentalists and bagpipers may apply.

Conor Keelan is new council chairman

Cllr Conor Keelan has been elected as Chairman of Dundalk for the forthcoming year. The Fianna Fail councillor said he was honoured to be voted in and predicted a busy year ahead.

“It’s obviously an honour to be elected to the chair and I’m very glad to be able to accept the role.

It will be a busy year and I am conscious of next May’s local elections as well as the forthcoming Boundary Commission review which may affect us with regards to the redrawing of constituencies and municipal

district areas.

“I will be aiming to ensure that the district of Dundalk gets the finances we deserve considering the size of our population. The current system is unfair I believe and doesn’t take into account the number of people living in this town,” he stated.

Conor was elected ahead of Sinn Fein Councillor Anne Campbell on a vote of 8-4. Maria Doyle will take up the role of Leas Cathaoirleach seeing off Sinn Fein’s Edel Corrigan 7-5 Conor succeeds Fine Gael councillor John McGahon in the role.

Registering to vote needs to be reformed Dundalk Councillor John McGahon has said that now that the referendum is over we need a drastic overhaul of the Register of Electors, particularly in relation to registering to vote, moving your vote and automatically registering eighteen year olds.

“The recent referendum has shown me once again that the process of registering to vote or changing address is outdated and needs to be reformed.

“For example, if you want to register to vote, you need to download an RFA2 Form, go to a Garda station, have it stamped and then leave it into a council’s office. Having to jump through so many hoops to register to vote in this day and age is outdated and cumbersome”, he stated.

In stating there was a need to move the process of registering or moving your vote to an online system, he pointed to the system used in the UK. “In the UK for example, you can register to vote or change your address online within five minutes, all that is required is a national insurance number. By moving it online, we are making it easier and simpler for people to keep their information up to date. Equally, it helps make the register more accurate. There are huge inaccuracies in our electoral

register up and down the country and it’s leading to a bloated and incorrect electoral register.

“Also, during the recent referendum, I had so many people ask me where they still entitled to vote if they were abroad or in hospital. In the UK you can apply for a proxy for a single election on a specific date for circumstances such as being away on polling day, having a medical issue or not being able to vote in person because of work. I think we should also consider this.

“Equally, I would also strongly encourage the Government to consider ensuring that all eighteen year olds are automatically registered to vote,” added Cllr McGahon.

Louth at Go for Life Games A team representing Louth took part in the 2018 Go for Life Games held in the DCU on Saturday June 9. They were one of 24 teams of older people from around the country participating in a day of fun sporting activities.

The Go for Life Games brings together almost 300 older players from all over Ireland to compete, get active and most importantly to have some fun. Go for Life is the national physical activity programme for older people, run

funded by Sport Ireland.

The Go for Life programme and the games event demonstrates that sports are for everyone, not matter what age.

Dundalk students have the chance to travel Europe for free 14

Dundalk Councillor John McGahon has advised Dundalk students to apply for a golden ticket to travel around Europe by train - for free.

Speaking on the announcement, Cllr McGahon said that thousands of Dundalk students are currently sitting their Leaving Certs, and what better way to celebrate the

finishing of exams than to go on a free holiday thanks to the European Peoples Party.

The leader of the European People Party, Manfred Weber has launched this pilot scheme with a total of 15,000 tickets being made available for 18-year-olds across Europe, with 140 tickets available in Ireland.

Students can apply for

the tickets between June 12 and June 26 and they will find out in July if they are successful.

“I think this is an excellent opportunity for any young person to experience everything Europe has to offer while not having to pay for travel. While there are only 140 tickets for Ireland, this is just a pilot project and

if it is successful the amount of tickets will increase each year,” he continued.

You can only apply if you are 18 years old on 1 July 2018 (born between 2 July 1999 and 1 July 2000 included), plan to travel between 9 July and 30 September 2018 and travel to at least one and up to four European Member States.

The torch is carried by members of the Garda Síochána, PSNI and Special Olympics Athletes around Ireland until finally igniting the flame of the Special Olympic Cauldron.

Old Dundalk Society Annual Summer Outing

This year the Old Dundalk Society’s summer excursion will visit counties Meath and Westmeath.

The outing will visit Martry Mill, where there will be a tour of a traditional family run watermill.

Leaving Martry Mill the tour will make its way to Kells, for tea/ coffee and a guided tour of the town’s monastic site. Leaving Kells the tour will continue its journey to Loughcrew Gardens where a guided tour of ancient church and garden will take place.

Loughcrew Gardens are part of the estate owned by the William Naper (1655). St Oliver Plunkett was born in a tower house located on the property. Light lunch is available (at own expense) in coffee shop located on site.

After lunch the tour will then make its way to Fore Abbey, an old Benedictine Abbey ruin situated to the north of Lough Lene in County Westmeath. On arrival at Fore, an audio-visual presentation on the history of Fore Abbey will be shown, and afterwards, a guided tour of the Abbey will take place.

Having completed the tour of the Abbey, we will depart for the Headfort Arms Hotel, Kells for dinner. Arriving back in Dundalk at 8pm approx.

Luxury coach with accompanying guide (Michael Gaynor) will depart from Mulholland Avenue at 8.30am on Saturday June 30. Booking may be made at Connell’s Drapers, Church Street, Dundalk and must be accompanied by full subscription of €55 for members, and €58 for non-members.

Booking commences on Wednesday June 20, and the latest date for booking is Wednesday June 27.

MAY REGISTRATIONS STEADY AS INDUSTRY GEARS UP FOR 182

Official statistics released by the Society of the Irish Motor Industry (SIMI) show that the total new car registrations for the month of May were up slightly by 1.47% (6,080) when compared to May 2017 (5,992).

Registrations year to date are 85,933.

New Light Commercial Vehicle registrations (LCV) were up 12.5% (1,644) on May 2017 (1,461) and year to date are up 5.9% (15,943).

Commenting on the figures SIMI Director General, Alan Nolan stated “The slight increase in New car registrations for the

month of May is a case of altered timing in hire drive registrations with 470 more registered in May this year while the overall total for the year to date is actually 13 cars behind 2017. In line with earlier predictions Electric Vehicle (EV) sales have increased from 370 in 2017 to 512 this year. The number of Imported Used Electric Vehicles also increased from 165 to 280 this year. We would expect to see registrations of new EVs increase further as more new models come to market. The market share based on fuel type for the year to Date up to the end

of May was: Diesel 55.6%, Petrol 37.9%, Hybrid 5.4%, Plug-in Hybrid 0.5%, Electric Vehicle 0.6%.

As we move into June the Industry is now focused on preparations for the start of the second peak sales period on 1st of July.
