Concerned parents in Mullaharlin Park have asked Louth County Council to fix a multi-use games area which has been locked up for the past year. The games area consists of an astro-turf football pitch which is inside a locked cage but there is a small area cut out at the side of the cage which is used by local children to enter the cage.

According to worried parents the children are getting injured while bending down to gain access to the cage due to the sharp spikes above the cut-out access point. Just last week a nineyear old boy was rushed to hospital after cutting his

head on the spike while trying to gain entry to the cage.

Shea Mellin had to have skin glue applied to his wound by doctors in Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital following the incident last week.

One of the angry residents who didn’t wish to be named said it was time something was done about the facility before somebody got a bad injury.

“We are worried sick that one of our children are going to get seriously injured.

The council installed this multi-use games area back in 2011 with funding from the National Lottery and it was a welcome addition to the community. However, they put a padlock on the Continued on Page 2

“If there is an issue with lack of resources to send somebody up to open and close the gate to the facility each day I’m sure we could sit down and sort something out between us. The key to the facility could be given to one of the

residents and we would ensure it is locked up each night and opened in the morning. To have it sitting there in its current state is just not an option and we want something done about this as soon as possible,” she added. €70000 was allocated for the building of the Multi-Use Games Area back in 2011 as part of the Sports Capital Programme. The

project was also part funded by the National Lottery. A Multi Use Games Area (abbreviated MUGA) is usually a steel anti vandal outdoor fenced area with built in goal post units for various types of sports games, such as football, basketball or tennis. There wasn’t anybody from Louth County Council available for comment at time of going to press.

Gardaí appeal for information on an unprovoked attack

Gardaí in Dundalk have appealed for witnesses to contact them regarding an unprovoked attack on Park St in the early hours of Monday 17th of April.

At approximately 2.20am two men were assaulted by another male in what was claimed to be an unprovoked attack. The attacker was described as being roughly 5ft 11” in height with a slim build. He was wearing a white shirt and black trousers.

There was also an attack on a male on the Armagh Road at approximately 3:45am on the 16th of April. The male was approached by a male described as being 17-18 years of age.

The teenager who was wearing a grey hoody top and black tracksuit bottoms produced a Stanley knife blade and threatened the individual. A small sum of cash was handed

over to the attacker before he fled the scene with another male and two females who were waiting close by.

Meanwhile the Gardaí’s battle against the drug problem in Dundalk continues with more seizures and arrests over the past week. €10000 worth of cocaine was seized from a house in Muirhevnamor on the 6th of April. One arrest was made and a male was detained, questioned and released pending a file being sent to the DPP. Six days later on the 12th of April a male was stopped and searched

by Gardaí in the Muirhevnamor area where a quantity of €350 worth of heroin was seized. The person was

arrested and charged before being brought to court in Dublin where he was remanded to appear in Dundalk court yesterday (19th).

Drugs were also found in a house on Tom Bellew Avenue with €2500 worth of heroin recovered by Gardaí during a planned raid.

One arrest was made and the male was later released pending a file being sent to the DPP. Finally, there was a burglary at the Bike Station in Bridge-AChrinn with three bicycles stolen either late on the 14th of April or in the early hours of the 15th. The three bikes had a combined value of €7000 and were all made by GIANT. The first bike was predominantly black with red writing,

the second was a sky blue colour and the third was half black, half fluorescent green.

No excuse for having pliers in church

A man who could offer no reason for having a pair of pliers in the Redemptorist Church was sentenced to 21 days in prison.

Michael Cassidy of 39 Mountain View Court, Dundalk, who is currently on remand in Mountjoy Prison stated that he was on drugs at the time of the offence. However, he is now off drugs and while in prison he is attending classes and is going to the gym.

Dundalk District Court heard that on October 14 last year, Gardai were informed that a male was acting suspiciously in the Redemptorist Church and causing a disturbance.

He was escorted out of the church and when searched Gardai found a pair of pliers, while he wasn’t able to give an explanation for having them.

Mr Cassidy had 42 previous convictions and has recently completed a six-month sentence.

The defence solicitor stated that her client had been addicted to drugs and although he had come off them, he was back on drugs at the time of this offence. She added that he is now clean and attempting to get away from drugs.

Failed to restrain child in car seat

A man who was found guilty of failing to properly restrain a child in the back of a car was told that he was wasting the court’s time as he had no defence to the charge.

Barry O’Brien (44) of Oaktate, Stonetown, had denied the charge but was convicted of the offence

by Judge John Coughlan and fined €100.

Evidence was given that at 2.45pm on August 18 last, Gardai had stopped behind the defendant’s car at Hill St Bridge when a four-year-old child in the back seat leaned out the window as far as his waist. Officers stopped the car and spoke to Mr O’Brien.

The defendant stated in evidence that he had secured his son in the car seat but he had escaped, while defence barrister, Irene Sands stated that the child was akin to Houdini in his ability to get free.

However, Judge Coughlan rejected this defence and stated that it was Mr O’Brien’s job to secure the boy and he hadn’t done that.

In convicting and imposing a fine of €100 the judge stated: “You failed to restrain the child.

You have no defence and you are wasting the court’s time”.

Judge vows to end family feuds A man who told a 12-year-old secondary school student that he would kill her and have her house burned down was sentenced to four months in prison.

Aaron Smith (20), 15 Doolargy Avenue, Dundalk, admitted a charge of assault when he appeared at Dundalk District Court.

Evidence was given that on November 9, 2016, the First Year student at O Fiaich College was walking back to school after lunch with an ice-cream when approached by Mr Smith. He made the threats which frightened her.

The girl was pushed by Smith and when the victim asked him his name, the defendant told her who he was. The victim reported the matter to his family, who contacted Gardai.

Solicitor, Eleanor Kelly, stated that the incident arose due of a feud between two families and that her client’s house had previously been petrol-bombed. Ms Kelly stated that Judge Flann Brennan had said he would im-

pose Community Service and stated that the feud had died down.

However, Judge John Coughlan, stated that it was not usual for a child to go to school and for this to happen as he imposed a four-month sentence.

When asked if he would consider suspending the sentence, Judge Coughlan replied “absolutely not” and added: “By the time I am finished in Dundalk there won’t be any feuding, I can guarantee that”.

Judge Coughlan fixed recognisances in the event of an appeal.

Cllr Cunningham delighted with new beach wheelchair in Clogherhead Sinn Féin Councillor Tom Cunningham has welcomed the launch of the new Hippocampe Beach Wheelchair at Clogherhead Beach.

Speaking today, Cllr Cunningham, who secured funding for the project, praised Sinn Féin Deputy Imelda Munster who was responsible for bringing the Beach Wheelchair to the County. “The last thing Imelda Munster did before she left Louth County Council to become a TD was to bring forward a motion calling for disabled persons to be able to go to a beach and to enter the sea like their able-bodied counterparts, something most of us take for granted. The motion received unanimous support across the Council and today we have our Beach Wheelchair. I can’t tell you how proud I feel today.”

Cllr Cunningham said “I know County Wexford has one and as far as I am aware, Louth is the second County in the State to have one so we are very lucky.

The Chair can be used on land and also in the sea and can accommodate adults and children alike. Can you imagine the freedom it would give a disabled person, young or old, to be able

to go into the sea without having to be helped or carried, something they would not have been able to do before.

And also the fact that it can go across the sand, parents or carers can

now wheel their child across the sand instead of sitting on the sidelines.”

Cllr Cunningham also pointed out that “this can only benefit tourism in Louth as families with someone who is disabled are very limited in their choice if they want to visit a beach. Louth and Clogherhead is only too happy to welcome them.”

Imelda Munster TD said at the time “there is an onus on local authorities to ensure equal access to services and amenities for every citizen.”

The Beach Wheelchair is available from today at Clogherhead Beach. Celtic Adventures anticipate a demand for its use and have asked that people who are interested in using the chair, which will be free of charge, pre-book to avoid disappointment.

Dundalk qualified for the final last September after winning three rounds but scheduling challenges led to the final being delayed until Sunday, April 9.

Mernagh produced two solid nines of 19pts each on his way to victory and his round included three point pars at third, fifth, 11th and 18th. His only dropped

points were at the eighth and 12th as he scored two points on every other hole. Overall, Mernagh had a round of nine pars, eight bogeys and one double-bogey.

The Dundalk Senior Scratch Cup, which was due to take place this Sunday has been rescheduled for September 17. An 18 Hole Singles Stableford competition over the white course has been scheduled for this Sunday in its place.

A disqualified driver who refused to stop for Gardai and drove at speeds in excess of 169kph was given a three-month suspended sentence when he pleaded guilty to a number of dangerous driving charges at Dundalk District Court.

Paul Finglas of 44 Orior Park, Bessbrook, Down, was warned by Judge Flann Brennan not to drink or he would end up in trouble.

Sgt Fintan McGroder stated that on April 20 last year at 3.44pm, Mr Finglas was observed driving at 169kph on the N1. He went off the motorway at Junction 14, passing a car at the slip road, and drove back on to the M1.

On a number of occasions he passed cars on the hard shoulder before driving across the border.

The PSNI were alerted and he was located and arrested in relation to offences in the North.

The court heard that he had been disqualified in the South and had 60 previous convictions, including drink driving.

Solicitor, Peter Lavery, handed in a letter from Mr Finglas and his employer, pointing out that it was over five years since his last conviction. He said he had a very difficult life but now had a chance of a permanent job and was engaged to be married.

He was off drink and drugs for a year and Mr Lavery asked that he be dealt with in a way that would not affect his liberty.

Judge Brennan stated that he was impressed by the faith his employer had in him as he imposed the three-month suspended sentence.

He stated that it was an extremely reckless thing to do and added that if he drinks again he will get in trouble.

Warning to be aware of possible scam

A Dundalk man has warned people to be vigilant after he was the target of what he believes to be a possible scam last week.

The man who doesn’t want to be named received a phonecall last week from a withheld number at approximately 9.55pm. A female person was on the line and she told the man that she

was outside his house with his €35 order of food from a local takeaway. The only problem with this being that he didn’t order any food.

“To be honest I was suspicious before I even spoke to the girl as the number was withheld which is usually a bit of a warning bell for me,” explained the man.

“She told me she was outside my house with food which I apparently ordered

from a local takeaway. I kept telling her that I hadn’t ordered food and she kept asking me if I was in the house.

Now I don’t know for certain what this was all about but I have put an ad up recently on daft trying to rent out a house and my guess is somebody got my number and house address from that ad and they were ringing me to try and determine if the house was empty that evening.

“I notified the Gardaí about the incident but there’s probably not a lot they can do. I’d ask people around the area to be aware of this type of scam because these types of things are happening more and more these days. It’s a sad state of affairs when you have to be looking out for potential scam artists all the time but unfortunately that’s the world we live in,” he added.

Disqualified driver was being given a tow

A disqualified driver who claimed he mistakenly thought his ban would not prevent him from having a car towed was given a three-month suspended sentence and banned for a further three years at Dundalk District Court.

Richard McDonagh of 2 Afton Drive, Dundalk, was observed by Gardai at Ballymascanlon on November 29 last year. He was behind the wheel of a car that was being towed into a garage.

Solicitor, Frank McDonnell, stated that Mr McDonagh didn’t think he was driving. He didn’t understand that being towed meant that he was in control of the car, and he felt that the car was not capable of being driven.

Judge Flann Brennan imposed a three-month sentence which he suspended for three months, and disqualified from driving for three years on a no insurance charge.

Simon Shop re-launch

Dundalk Simon Community re-launched their charity shop on Yorke St yesterday (Wednesday April 19th). The relaunch took place yesterday afternoon with the help of very special guest Susan McCann who cut the ribbon in front of staff and supporters of the shop.

The legendary country singer brought along a special guest of her own as Lynda Strain (Make Up Artist) accompanied her to the re-launch of the shop. After the re-launch Susan and Lydia moved on to the Lisdoo where they hosted an Afternoon Tea Party which was enjoyed by all in attendance.

The Wellington School was built in 1812 and served as a school up until 1960 when they moved to their new school in Nicholas Street. But on this occasion it is the pupils of Dún Dealgan National School enjoying the surroundings if only on a temporary basis as their own school is presently being revamped with new classrooms.

The present Dun Dealgan School referred to as the ‘New School’ was built in 1891 and is currently in the process of being improved but a previous school existed in Seatown in 1865. But the Presbyterian commitment to education goes much further back than that. For example it is known that a school flourished under the patronage of the

Some of the pupils to excel from that time include Nicholas Callan of Darver who went on to join the priesthood in Maynooth. Rev. Nicholas Callan D.D was the discoverer of the induction coil as well as

galvanising. Callan is today honoured in Dundalk where the library of the DkIT college is named after him.

Another pupil who reached international fame was Thomas Callan who excelled in many spheres including medicine, chemistry, mining and botany. A garden in his name ex-

ists at the back of the County Museum in Jocelyn Street. Another pupil was Sir John MacNeill, an eminent engineer who was designer of the Boyne and Craigmore Viaduct as well as the Navvy Bank here in Dundalk.

So the present students have a long record of excellence to follow.

Dún Dealgan National School is seen as one of the leading multidenominational primary schools and has achieved a very welldeserved reputation for educational excellences. It is expected that the 88 students will return to their refurbished school on Jocelyn Street

by January 2018.

CúChulainn Archers

Sunday saw the departure of some of CúChulainn Archers finest members to literally the other side of the world in order to compete in the Worlds Masters Games in Auckland, New Zealand.

The Worlds Masters Games were set up in 1995 to provide international multi-sports events for mature sports men and women, the 3 archers travelling will be away for 3 weeks, so more of them and their progress next week.

While the cat was away, the rest of the club gathered like mice around the chocolate during a fun easter egg shoot (have-a-go event) down at Butterleys Sports bar, Irish Street,

Ardee on Monday.

The small “field” shoot started normal enough for the new club members, to acclimatise to shooting outdoors in the elements. Split into small groups, the archers shot their 3 arrows at various distances until they’d each visited each target once. For round two, the fun began as suddenly obstacles obstructed view.

Archers had to kneel down for some targets or stand on platforms to shoot down at others.

Round three challenged archers to shoot three arrows to burst one balloon containing a bag of chocolate treats.

Chocolate medals were finally awarded on the most ridiculous rea-

sons imaginable from best hat, to best spectator, to best driver. The day finished up with a treat of pizza and chips, and although the fun was declared officially over, everyone stayed on to practice more arrows.

James Moloney missed the fun day and instead headed to Scotland for a 3D shoot, he reported back “Over in Scotland at the Border Archery 3D Easter shoot. Scored 820 yesterday and 805 today for a total of 1,625. The winning total for barebow was 1,735.

Well done to all club members and very best of luck to John Keenan, Deirdre Rogers and Eamonn Rogers.

Ryan makes his mark

Louth Village teenager Ryan Byrne is the latest member of his family to make his mark in the world of clay shooting. The fifteen-year old finished joint top last week in the South Wicklow championships where he was competing in the senior section against adults. Ryan’s amazing accuracy saw him finish with a joint overall high gun score of 83 which was especially good given the course is considered as one of the more technical in the country.

Ryan is the younger brother of Jake Byrne who is considered to be one of the finest shooters in the country. Jake achieved a lifetime ambition two years ago when he represented Ireland in the World Clay Shooting Championships in Florida.

Now 21 Jake continues to impress in competitions all over the country but now he has a new rival in the shape of his younger brother Ryan.

tured in Louth Village by his father Peter.

The younger brother has also seen his elder sibling win two AllIreland U21 championships and he will be hoping to emulate this feat in the coming years to add to the Byrne trophy cabinet in Louth Village.

Record Store Day is coming back to Dundalk Classified Records has been confirmed as an official participant in world famous Record Store Day, returning to Dundalk on Saturday 22nd April. The annual event is now in its 10th year and aims to "celebrate the culture of the independently owned record store". The day brings together fans, artists, and thousands of independent record stores across the world.

Man struck woman with wiper A man who struck a woman with a window wiper was given a two-month suspended sentence at Dundalk District Court. Dean McConnell (22) of 9 Clan Chulainn Park, Farndreg, also pleaded guilty to a public order charge following the incident at Park St on November 27, 2015.

The court heard that at 1.15am Gardai noticed a male acting aggressively towards females and observed Mr McConnell strike one on the arm with a windscreen wiper, causing a bruise.

The defendant, who had two previous convictions, became aggressive towards Gardai who had to use pepper spray to arrest him.

Solicitor, Frank McDonnell, stated that the 24-year-old had a lot to drink on the night and that he apologised for his behaviour.

New drug driving laws

Motorists in Louth can now be tested for drugs in their system during Garda checkpoints following new legislation which came into force on the 12th of April.

The drug driving legislation - introduced under the Road Traffic Act 2016 - allows Gardaí to set up Mandatory Intoxicant Checkpoints (MIT) to test drivers for the presence of both alcohol and drugs in their system. Driving with drugs in your system has been illegal since 1961 but previously Garda had no reliable way of knowing if a driver had drugs in their system.

Before this new law was introduced, Gardaí would check if a driver’s eyes were dilated or ask them to do a balance test if they suspected a driver had drugs in their system. However, a new drug testing device is now available to all Gardaí which will allow officers to test a sample of saliva for the presence of drugs such as cannabis, Valium, cocaine and heroin.

The new drug testing devices - which will serve as a further method of preliminary drug testing - will allow officers to test a sample of a driver’s saliva for the presence of drugs such as cannabis, cocaine, a range of opiates (including heroin and morphine) and a range of benzodiazepines (including diazepam and flurazepam).

Under the new law anybody found to be over the legal threshold for any of these drugs face a minimum one year disqualification from driving. Anyone found to be over the legal threshold for cocaine, cannabis or heroin faces a minimum one-year disqualification from driving. As well as disqualifications from driving, other potential drug driving penalties include prison terms of up to six months or fines of up to €5,000.

Search for 2017 Louth Rose begins The chance to represent Louth in Tralee for this year’s Rose Festival is almost here with the selection process taking place in the Four Seasons hotel on Sunday 23rd April at 7:30pm.

Current Louth Rose, Megan Ferguson will be in attendance to talk about her year so far which has seen her visit the Christmas markets in Frankfurt as well as a trip to Chernobyl with the Aide Roche foundation. Megan also travelled to New York City where she and her fellow Roses were guests of honour in the Manhattan, St Patrick’s Day parade on 5th Avenue.

Steam Train Excursion

An RPSI (Railway Preservation Society of Ireland) steam train en route from Belfast to Dublin will call at Dundalk station at 12:05pm on Thursday May 4. The society has an allocation of 60 seats on this train for members and friends. The train is rescheduled to depart at 12:30pm and due to arrive in Connolly station, Dublin at 1:45pm. This is a single (oneway) journey and patrons must make their own arrangements for the return journey from Dublin to Dundalk. The fare for the one-way trip is €16 (for both adults and children). Tickets will be available from Wednesday April 19 at the tourist office, Market Square, Dundalk and Dundalk Railway station.

The popular late night cafe takes place this Tuesday on the 25th of April from 8pm - 12 in An Tain Arts Centre (Dundalk Town Hall). Games, discussions, lowmoderate music (important to note), refreshments, table tennis are all on the agenda for the evening. As well as providing a social outlet for people the late night café have also contributed to local charities raising money for both SOSAD Dundalk and Louth S.P.C.A in recent months.

Drug Testing: Gardaí To Begin Roadside Tests In April From April Gardaí will be provided with new technology to carry out roadside drug testing, as part of an effort to improve road safety. As part of the new measures motorists will now be tested for a variety of illegal and prescription drugs which could negatively impact on the ability to drive.

Below we address some of the major questions which have emerged following the announcement.

Why are these tests being introduced now?

The idea of roadside drug testing isn’t new, having been proposed several times in recent years, but the absence of reliable technology meant such testing was difficult to carry out. With satisfactory technology now in existence to allow Gardaí to carry out roadside tests using a saliva sample Ireland is following in the footsteps of countries such as France and Australia in introducing such tests.

Were Gardaí not able to test for drugs before this?

Gardaí already have the authority to test a motorists for drugs, but without trustworthy technology had to rely on roadside impairment tests. These tests involve one or more of the following; testing for pupil dilation, asking motorists to bring their finger to their nose, a balance test,

a walking test, and a second balance test involving standing on one foot for a count of eight.

What kind of drugs will machine test?

The machine which Gardaí will be using, the Drӓger Drugtest 5000, will test for three illegal drugs (cannabis, cocaine and heroin) with the potential for more to be added in the future. In addition to illegal drugs, the machine will also test for benzodiazepines such as Valium, sleeping tablets and certain anti-anxiety medication which may have been prescribed by a doctor.

I have a prescription for Valium (or another benzodiazepine), how will I be affected?

As long as you are taking the medication as prescribed by your doctor, i.e. take the recommended amount at the correct intervals you won’t be affected by this measure. As the test will be based on the amount of the drug in your system, however, if you exceed the recommended dosage you could be deemed unfit to drive and face prosecution in the face of a positive test.

However, even if you are taking medication as prescribed by your doctor, it is important that you don’t get behind the wheel if you feel you are unable to drive.

If you have any concerns about this, or if your medication or dosage is changed then consult with your doctor before driving.

How will the testing be carried out?

If asked to take part in a test you will be required to provide a saliva sample using a swab which will then be placed in the testing device. The sample will then be tested to determine if levels in excess of the permitted limits for prescription medication traces of illegal drugs are present, before producing a result within 8 minutes.

What happens if I fail the test?

If a driver fails the roadside test, they can then be taken to a Garda station where a blood or urine sample will be taken and sent to the Medical Bureau of Road Safety for further analysis. If this additional testing confirms the findings of the roadside test then the driver faces up a driving disqualification of one year for their first offence, or of two years for a second offence.

Can I refuse to take the test?

If asked to take part in a roadside test, failing or refusing to do so constitutes an offence in itself. Refusal to provide a sample can result in a jail sentence of up to 6 months and a maximum fine of €5,000.
