The generoisty of secret millionaire, John Fitzpatrick, was felt in Dundalk once again as he helped a local sporting club realise their dreams.

The businessman admits it’s a relief to have finally secured a premises for O’Hanlon Park boxing club. The Dundalk boxing club will move to the site of the old Toymaster on the Longwalk and meetings have already started between the boxing club, John Fitzpatrick and builders with a view to opening the facility early in 2017.

O’Hanlon boxing club has been trying for several years to seek a new home for the club with little success but their efforts got a shot in the arm through the generosity of New York hotelier John Fitzpatrick who was taking part in the RTE documentary ‘The Secret Millionaire’. Continued on Page 2

New era begins at St Mary's College

Last Friday saw the end of an era as well as the dawning of a new one as St Mary’s College left their old school to move into their brand new state of the art building just metres down the road.

With accommodation for up to 900 pupils, the new St Mary’s College post-primary school has 29 specialist classrooms for subjects including technology, construction studies, art, home economics and design and communication graphics, while there also are guidance and learning support suites.

Paul is understandably delighted that the move to the new hall is finally about to happen.

“It’s been a long time coming and it’s been a

frustrating time in many ways as there have been so many hitches and legal issues in securing the building for the boxing club.

“Thanks to John Fitzpatrick’s generosity we have taken a major step forward this week by securing the building which John will lease to

us for a nominal fee of €1 a year for the next five years.

“We still have some fundraising to do to help us get up and running but the main thing is we’ve got our new home secured and we can look forward to opening the doors in 2017,” stated a delight-

ed Paul.

Meanwhile John Fitzpatrick praised all the local community organisations for persevering with the project despite all the obstacles that presented themselves.

The controversy over the eviction of traveller families from Woodland Park shows no signs of coming to a conclusion with a representative for the evicted families claiming that she has been ignored by Louth County Council officials since March 12th Rebeccca Quinn, spokesperson for the evicted travellers penned the letter to council officials last week and was hoping to arrange a meeting with council officials at some stage this week. According to Rebecca the letter is designed to get things

moving while pointing out the daily dangers and safety risks which the evicted families are exposed to.

In the letter, Ms Quinn states that she has been trying to contact the council on a daily basis since March 12 without any success.

A number of families were evicted from Woodlawn Park in January with the council citing health and safety factors as a reason for the families to move on.

Since then a number of the families are living in an illegal halting site at Dundalk Retail Park

with no running water or sewage facilities.

Some of the families with small children had been put up in local B & Bs but that arrangement came under threat last month with the council alleging that the B & B owners had asked some families to leave due to their behaviour. A statement was released by Louth County Council which stated that the arrangement would not continue indefinitely.

More than 50 students from every department are getting involved in making this event happen from photography and music to make-up and styling. The entire show will be run by the students of DKIT. On the night students will also be modelling the latest trends from locally sourced boutiques from in and around Dundalk.

Tickets are €10 and can be purchased from the Students Union from Thursday April 14. The event is open to the public so all are welcome.

Students show their flair for creating business They were thrilled with how the day turned out.

A MOST successful Secondary Schools Student Enterprise Showcase event was held in the Marshes Shopping Centre last Thursday.

Over 20 stalls were set up, as the enterprising students, largely TY students, showcased their entrepreneurial prowess, both business and social.

A number of CSPE groups from 1st, 2nd and 3rd year added to the event, promoting awareness of great and worthy causes, including cystic fibrosis and Alzheimers, to name a few. All groups raised

much appreciated funds for their organisations.

The star of the day was the guide dog who was taken round to all stalls, as part of the efforts of one group to raise awareness of Irish Guide Dogs.

Bambu Cafe, a TY catering company, ran an impressive cafe for the duration of the event.

With the support of their Enterprise teachers, the Event was organised by Elite Events Managers, a TY enterprise group from Dundalk Grammar School.

Independent councillor Maeve Yore has welcomed the confirmation that Louth will be given 24 permanent Gardaí to help tackle crime in the county.

Maeve tabled a motion in December asking members of Louth County Council to write to the Minister for Justice Frances Fitzgerald to demand that extra Garda resources be made available in Louth and made permanent. That motion was passed and at a Joint Policing Forum last week Superintendent Gerry Curley confirmed that there will be twenty four permanent Gardaí deployed in Co. Louth over the next couple of months, some of which have already started.

According to Maeve the news is a huge boost for the county as Gardaí continue to fight the ongoing battle against crime and drugs.

“When I put in my motion back in December I asked for more Gardaí to be

deployed in Co. Louth and also a systematic reform of the criminal justice system.

“It is fantastic news that we have been given more Gardaí and we are already seeing the difference these extra numbers are making with the news that Gardaí are patrolling outside schools to deter drug dealers from targeting children,” noted Maeve.

“But we also need to reform our criminal justice system as it simply isn’t working. 48% of criminals re-offend and that just cannot continue to happen.

“We need to have a zero tolerance attitude towards criminals and let the victims of these crimes feel that they have a voice.

“The Gardaí do such a thankless job and it must be so frustrating to see them catch these criminals only to see them back on the streets a short time later”, continued Maeve.

Eoin wins Faldo Series U-16 Ireland Golf Championship Dundalk Golf Club’s Eoin Murphy won the Faldo Series U16 Ireland Championship at Lough Erne Resort last week when he beat the cream of Irish golfers in his age-group to qualify for the European Grand Final.

After an opening round of 74, he fired a second round of 70 for a level par total of 144 which was good enough to take the title by four shots ahead of several Irish internationals.

“This was my biggest win outside the club and it is a great start to the year,” said Murphy. “It was a very strong field, with several Irish internationals in it, so it was good to show what I can do in that sort of company.”

Murphy, who plays off five, found himself two shots behind Conor Glennon (Glasson) and Robert Galligan (Elm Park) after the first round with a six shot gap to the rest of the field.

However, in round two Murphy blew everybody away with the only sub-par round of the tournament, a two under par 70 as nobody else in the field managed to shoot better than 76.

The Faldo Series,

which was the brainchild of former Major champion Nick Faldo, is recognised as the only global amateur series for boys and girls and is now in its 20th year.

Among the top professional players to have

come through the Faldo Series is Rory McIlroy.

The date and venue for the European Final will be announced shortly but it is likely to be at one of the continent’s major golf venues.

Oisin Murtagh wins national title

The junior national Matchplay championships took place throughout Ireland this weekend and Dundalk Tennis Club was once again extremely well represented. Eight players from the club qualified into the championships which in itself is a remarkable achievement for one club. In fact this is the highest representation of players from an individual academy nationwide.

The format of the national championships consists of the top 16 players in each age group to playoff against one another to battle out for a national title. It was local boy

Only the national tennis academy in DCU compare to these numbers.

Call to relatives of Louth 1916 Volunteers Dundalk 1916 Relatives Committee are calling upon all 1916 relatives of the brave Louth Volunteers to commemorate the historic event exactly 100 years on.

Relatives are asked to meet on Sunday April 24, the same date, the same place at the exact same time as their ancestors met 100 years ago, to attend the official wreath laying and flag raising ceremony at

Dundalk Courthouse.

All relatives are to meet at the K.O.H, John Boyle O’Reilly Hall on Clanbrassil Street from 9:15am on.

St Vincents host French visitors THE students from Transition Year in St Vincents were delighted to welcome a group of 49 students from the Lycée Despiau in Mont de Marsan, South West France, to their school recently.

The 5th year French students spent the afternoon in the school and had an opportunity to sample some classes and enjoy the wonderful hospitality shown by the girls.

The highlight of the afternoon was a concert by the school’s Gaelbhratach committee, with performances by the school’s finest Irish dancers and singers along with the school’s traditional music group.

Blackrock ICA are delighted to have the Dundalk filmmaker, Marcus Howard, visit them on Wednesday May 27, at 8pm in the Community Centre, Sandylane, to show the documentary film he has produced about Dundalk’s role in the Rising. Adrienne McEnteggart Boyle, whose relative was a Volunteer and who is an ICA member will also speak and show the medal she received.

(Adrienne shall also be reading the Proclamation at the 1916 Commemoration Ceremony to be held in Blackrock on April 24th).

Dundalk marks the 100 year anniversary of the 1916 Louth County Council will mark the 100 anniversary of the 1916 Easter Rising on Sunday April 24 at 10.15am at Market Square, Dundalk. This ceremonial event will involve a parade from John Boyle O’Reilly Hall with formal wreath laying ceremony and a reading of the proclamation at the Courthouse on Market Square. It is a local ceremonial event and the people of Dundalk are invited to attend.

This local ceremonial event is part of the Ireland 2016 programme and reflects on the themes of remembering, reconciling, presenting, imagining and celebrating.

Elliot dances his way to medal A Dundalk boy has finished third for his age category in the Oireachtas Rince Na Cruinne (World Irish Dancing Championships), which took place recently in Glasgow.

Elliot Kwelele, 11, danced his way to glory in the boy’s 10-11 category, beating off some fierce competition from 46 other qualifiers, from across the world, including Germany, America, Canada, England, Scotland and Ireland.

Rosemary shows improvement On Sunday last, the Sportsman Duathlon series concluded with the third race over the Ravensdale course which as always, was keenly contested by local athletes and visitors from far and wide.

A dry and sunny yet chilly morning greeted the 100 athletes as they set up in transition in the beautiful surroundings of the Ravensdale countryside.

And it was almost a clean sweep for local triathletes and Setanta members Bryan McCrystal of Team Asea winning the mens’ race and Setanta’s Mary Laverty first Lady home.

There was also a prize for most improved athlete over the three races and this was won by Setanta triathlete Rosemary Gibson who lowered her finishing time by more than five minutes.

Bryan McCrystal posted the fastest bike split of the day and arrived into T2 almost one minute ahead of Paul Carroll, a lead he retained despite Paul being faster on the second run leg but just unable to overtake Bryan who won in 47: 33, just twelve seconds ahead of Paul, followed by

Sixth annual Armagh Diocesan Faith Award Ceremony Hundreds of young people flocked to St. Patrick’s Cathedral Armagh for the annual Armagh Diocesan Faith Award Ceremony on Tuesday March 15 with the event celebrated by Archbishop Eamon Martin and Dean Colum Curry.

This year over 300 young people attended to be presented with their awards, namely the Muiredach Cross Award and the Pope John Paul II Award in an event that has been described as “a fitting celebration for the work of young people in the Diocese.”

The Muiredach Cross Award and the Pope John Paul II Award

are prestigious awards in the area of faith development and to receive one is undoubtedly a thing of great honour for those who were being celebrated at this event.

The Muiredach Cross Award is particularly aimed at the younger members of society throughout the schools in the Archdiocese.

It is hoped that participation in this award will provide a solid foundation upon which to build in later life when a young person is eligible for the Pope John Paul II Award. There is great interest in participation in these two awards and this was highlighted by the sheer enthusiasm shown in at-

tendance at the event on Tuesday night.

The positive thing about this awards night was that it wasn’t a passive experience for those involved. The young people and their schools/parishes were actively involved throughout the whole ceremony. This year, being a special Jubilee Year of Mercy in the Church, the Award Committee incorporative the Cathedral Walk of Mercy into the ceremony. Each participating school/parish was represented by one member of their group on this special walk, which took place throughout the ceremony.

Round two of cycling league Round Two of the Cuchulainn Bike Station Cycling League was a 40km race that took the riders from The Sportmans on the old Newry Road out to Greenore and back for a finish at the entrance to St. Olivers. The course is seen as a flat one, but the road from Greenore up to towards Lordship drags considerably and always sees a number of riders tailed off. However

the course did not deter many with 94 riders signing on to start.

In Race One last week’s winner Rosenna Lynch was rewarded for her strong ride with a move back to group two and this week did not see any solo victory with all three groups coming together by the finish.

There it was group three’s Dean McArdle who proved strongest taking the win. Patrick

Gorman also of group three was second with group two’s William Loughlin taking the final podium spot. Rosemary Gibson was first lady in eight position.

Meanwhile in Race two, for the second week running group four evaded the clutches of group six and Newry Wheeler’s Ralph Ginisi took an excellent win in a tightly contested sprint finish.

Letter to the editor Dear Editor Having read much in your newspaper recently, and listened to a lot of media coverage of the 1916 Rising. I can only conclude that the Rising was an enormous tragedy. It left us with a hundred year legacy of, violence, hatred, intimidation and fear.

It was responsible for

the deaths of thousands of people, created thousands of widows and left thousands of children without fathers. During the next sixty years we had a ‘Free State’ that incarcerated children in orphanages and industrial schools and treated women as second-class citizens.

It was not until the generation of young

people that emerged in the nineteen seventies, that a ‘Free State’ was born. They cast off the Yoke of the Roman Catholic Church and de Valera. They inspired Irish people to come out in defiance of old taboos and silences. Single-mothers were encouraged to wheel their Babys down the street.

Eventually the unhap-

pily married could get divorced and gay people were no longer seen as criminals.

This all happened without any lives been lost. Are these not the heroes we should be writing poetry about and raising monuments to?

Didn’t want to leave man unpunished

A man who went on a crime spree in Dundalk caused over €1,000 damage and stole 200 packets of cigarettes.

Andrew Keenan of 594 Ashling Park, Dundalk, pleaded guilty to a number of offences when he appeared at Dundalk District Court where he was sentenced to four months in prison.

The court heard that on July 23 the front window of a premises was broken at Roden Place, Dundalk. CCTV showed the defendant entering the premises and taking coins from a sweet machine. Damage of €200 was caused.

On July 22, Mr Keenan entered a premises on Park St at 4.10 by smashing a window.

He took coins from a Lotto machine and 200 packets of cigarettes valued at €2,000.

€350 was taken from the till. The defendant was identified on CCTV. Mr Keenan, who had 82 previous convictions, also admitted breaking a window on a premises at Market Square.

The court heard that some of the money was recovered but cigarettes were not.

Solicitor, Peter Lavery, stated that his 39-year-old client had been given a sixmonth sentence in December for a number of matters that were committed around the same time.

The current charges had been before the court on a previous occasion and he had been prepared to plead guilty only for them to be struck out.

He stated that the defendant had expected that all matters would be dealt with at the same time and

Mr Lavery suggested that in that situation the sentence would not have been any greater.

He stated that Mr Keenan was intoxicated at the time and there were no reasons for committing these ‘senseless’ acts, as he asked the judge not to extend his current sentence.

Judge Grainne O’Neill stated that the solicitor was asking her to impose no sentence on matters as serious as these, where no compensation was paid, and that she was not prepared to leave him unpunished.

After a short adjournment, Mr Lavery asked that part of any sentence imposed would be suspended.

Judge O’Neill imposed a four month sentence in relation to the offence on July 23, taking the other matters into consideration.

Residents in Ravensdale came together for a clean-up of the area. The organisers were delighted with the response from young and old, and would like to thank all who helped out. They are also grateful to An Taisce and Louth County Council for their contribution, along with Philip Crilly who provided ice-cream to all.

Louth Rose to be selected soon The Louth Rose will be selected at the end of the month at a glitzy ceremony in the Crowne Plaza and time is fast running out for any ladies who feel they have what it takes to make it all the way to Tralee.

The International Rose of Tralee is one of the biggest and most popular dates on the calendar and Louth Rose organisers are urging any lady between 18 and 27 years old to apply right now for the selection process which will take place on April 23. Rory O’Brien who is on the organising committee for the Louth Rose is encouraging anybody

who enjoys the Rose of Tralee festival to apply online and give themselves a chance to become the Louth Rose.

Previously the Louth Rose had to go to a second selection process in Portlaoise but that has been done away with and if you are selected to be Louth Rose you are guaranteed to be in Tralee as part of the International Rose festival.

The competition opens up so many doors for girls and can create plenty of opportunities as well as lasting friendships. Last year’s Rose Jenny Hanlon is just back from New York where she represented

Louth in the NY St Patrick’s Day parade. She had a fantastic time in Tralee and was very well received by audiences down there and those watching on TV,” explained Rory.

THE fifth annual Patsy Kelly 5K run took place last Saturday evening and once again proved to be a huge success with all money raised going towards the Birches Centre on the Dublin Rd. The race which is held in memory of former Clans groundsman Patsy Kelly was as always a very competitive affair with Dunleer’s Garry Campbell leading the men home in a time of 15:25, followed closely

by Cillian O’Leary from Swords and local North East Runner Brian McCloskey.

“The race simply would not be possible without the help of the local community and

we would like to thank every single volunteer and sponsor who helped out this year. Thankfully the weather was in our favour and we got a nice evening for running.

“The roads were closed to traffic this year which meant that we had lots of spectators lining the route and given the way the course was set up a lot of spectators were able to take a short cut from the Ecco Road to Pearse Park to get a couple of looks at whatever runner they were following. All in all it was a great success and we had a good night afterwards reminiscing about Patsy. It’s a great event and please God we’ll be back again next year for number six,” stated Jim.

The school is trying to locate copies of Probe Magazine for their archives going back to Probe 1 which was published in

the early 1980s and continued until Probe 15 in 1992. They have copies of the magazine from Probe 16 onwards.

The production of High School Musical, which was staged by the TY students in Ardee Community School, was a resounding success.

It ran for three nights in the parish centre and attracted large crowds.

The students enjoyed singing and dancing and many performances were de-

scribed as “outstanding”, including those of the leads; Niamh Tenanty, Conor Gillespie, Danny Morse and Jordan Keenan.

There were special guest appearances each night.

First on was past pupil, Thomas Gillespie (Tommy G) who sang ‘Wherever My Spirit Roams’. Shane Cros-

son from ‘Golden Elk’ also performed. On Saturday night, the Young Social Innovators from the TY class dramatised ‘Speak Out Against Peer Pressure’. On Sunday night, dancers from Starmakers Stage School performed.

Scratch Cup at Dundalk GC Teenager Thomas Mulligan will aim to become only the third player to retain the Dundalk Scratch Cup, sponsored by Jeffers Sports Turf, when the 36hole tournament takes place over the famed Blackrock links this Sunday.

Mulligan became the youngest ever winner of this prestigious competition last year when, as a 15-year-old, he won by three shots from his Co Louth clubmate Gerard Dunne and Dun-

dalk’s Caolan Rafferty with the highlight being his impressive seven-under par 65 in the first round.

If he manages to come out on top again this year Mulligan will join the legendary Joe Carr and Declan Brannigan as the only players to win the Dundalk title back to back with Carr achieving the feat in 1965 and 1966 while Brannigan did it in 1972 and 1973.

The field also includes Dun-

dalk’s Eoin Murphy, who won the U16 Faldo Series Ireland Championship at Lough Erne.

Murphy is part of a strong Dundalk contingent that includes another former winner, Aaron Grant, and Rafferty. Grant and Rafferty recently reached the quarter-finals of the West of Ireland at Rosses Point.

Told to show more respect to the court A man was told to show more respect to the court on his next appearance after being given the chance to avoid a conviction.

After admitting to a number of public order charges, Shane Cruise of 46 Seatown, Dundalk, was

told that if he paid €300 to the local hospice by June 1 he would avoid a conviction. However, if he failed to do so he would face a €200 fine on two charges.

The court heard that on March 17 this year, Gardai observed the defendant

being abusive to security staff outside a premises on Park St. He was highly intoxicated and refused to leave the area. When Gardai arrested him he ran away but was stopped a short distance away and then taken to the station.

Barrister, Irene Sands, stated that the 22-year-old is originally from Drogheda but now living in Dundalk. He had been out for the night and had far too much to drink. He doesn’t normally drink and hasn’t since this incident, while

fendant had behaved very badly on the night and his behaviour in court didn’t suggest any remorse.

In putting the case back to June 1 the judge warned Mr Cruise to show more respect on the next occasion.

It’s almost that time of year again as the Táin March Festival is returning for the second year in its current format, starting in Rathcroghan (Co. Roscommon) on May 28 before finishing in Omeath on June 6.

A family-friendly celebration of the legendary Táin Bó Cúailnge, the festival will be packed full of fun, music, games, battles and diversions with something for everyone to enjoy across the ten different sites.

The Táin March Festival 2016 was recently launched at Stephenstown Pond by Tim Mullins, who introduced the rest of the committee members: Mel O’Loan, Kevin Moran, Sinéad Roche and Neil McKellar.

Tom Laramie, who is co-ordinator of this year’s festival, then welcomed the attendees who travelled from as far as Tulsk, Roscommon – and they were brimming with ideas to ensure that this year’s Táin

March is the best yet.

Discussed at the launch, was how the festival has evolved from a four-day event into its current format of ten days and emphasis was put on how it can only continue to grow over a number of years.

Also talked about were a number of potential improvements from last year, including the branding of the march, community involvement and continued correspondence between representatives from all the sites.

Kwasie Boyce of MAD Youth Theatre and who has worked with the Táin March for the last number of years, was also in attendance and discussed the importance of getting kids engaged with culture.

The attendees also had the pleasure of hearing for the first time, Marsháil na Tána, performed by the renowned Gerry O’Connor, which is a truly outstanding piece of music, truly befitting of the Táin celebrations.
