A local man’s efforts to keep the coastline of North North free from litter and plastics have been praised by a local councillor who has called him an ‘unsung hero’.

Riverstown councillor Antóin Watters has praised the efforts of the Rathcor man who spends many of his weekends collecting rubbish along the North Louth coast. The man who wishes to remain anonymous has been collecting rubbish around the area for many years and ac-

Primary School Quiz Night a great success Dundalk Credit Union’s Annual Primary School Quiz Night took place in The Lisdoo, Dundalk on Monday, 11th February to a packed audience.

This year saw 22 teams taking part, proudly supported by their teachers, parents and families. The standard of answering was extremely high. For a second year running, C.B.S. Primary School were the overall winners with Realt na Mara finishing in sec-

ond place. Gaelscoil Dhún Dealgan came third.

These three teams now go forward to the regional final hosted by the Credit Union Development Association (CUDA) in The Johnstown Estate, Enfield, Co Kildare on March 9th.

DkIT formalises relationship with Sport Ireland

Dundalk Institute of Technology (DkIT) has signed a Memorandum Of Understanding Pupils from Kilkerley N.S. Eoin Larkin, Alana Quigley, Naoise Harris, Sadhbh McElroy, Oisín Donnelly and Nancy Coleman (MOU) with the nationparticipate in VEX Robotics North East Regional Competition at DkIT. al sports development fund, Sport Ireland Coaching to facilitate closer cooperation in the continued development of its BA and BA (Hons) in Sports, Exercise & Enterprise programmes.

The MOU aims to cement the already long-lasting relationship between DkIT and Sport Ireland Coaching by enhancing communications exchange and ensuring greater collaboration across academic planning and programme development. Under this new relationship, students on the BA and BA (Hons) in Sport, Exercise & Enterprise will continue to have an opportunity to receive accreditation from Sport Ireland for relevant modules completed as part of the course. Both these programmes are located in the School of Business and Humanities.

For example in Year 1, students receive Coaching Children accreditation in addition to academic credits for successfully completing the Developing Physical Literacy module. In Year 2, students also have the opportunity to gain accreditation by completing the iCoachKids MOOC which is covered as part

Speaking at the MOU signing, Dr Patricia Moriarty, Head of School of Business & Humanities said, “We are delighted to formalise our partnership with Sport Ireland and to seek out new opportunities to collaborate into the future.

We have a longstanding relationship with Sport Ireland which has informed and influenced academic content within our highly successful Sports programmes. As we approach Programmatic Review, we are working with Sport

Ireland to ensure that our modules are futureproofed and are fully aligned with industry standards. This helps enhance the employability of our graduates by ensuring that they are equipped with the skills and knowledge that are demanded by employers today.”

David Cranny, Lecturer on the BA and BA (Hons) in Sports, Exercise & Enterprise at DkIT added, “The partnership with Sport Ireland is an example of the extensive links we have with industry. Last year the Institute signed a new partnership with leading sports monitoring technology firm, STATSports and we also have strong relationships with the National Governing Bodies of Sport and Local Sports Partnerships. Engagement with industry ensures that our students are career-ready and that our courses remain upto-date with the latest industry trends.”

Launch of Enterprise Week Programme The launch of the Local Enterprise Week programme of events for 2019 took place at the Local Enterprise Office last week.

Taking place across Louth from March 4 to 8, these free events provide local business people with the opportunity to learn, network and grow their business.

Local Enterprise Week is planned and managed by the team at the Local Enterprise Office in Louth.

Speaking at the launch Thomas McEvoy, Head of Enterprise, explained that the office is well aware from supporting businesses throughout the year that running a business can be lonely and challenging.

Little Monsters returns to The Marshes

On Saturday the 6th April 2019 there will be a National Celebration at the "Our Lady of Knock Shrine", Knock, Co.Mayo to celebrate the 300th anniversary of the death of St. John Baptist de La Salle, his life and his Mission.

This is a once in a life time opportunity for the Lasallian community to join together in celebration. It is the first time an event like this has taken place in Ireland and will coinside similar events taking place all round the world this year.

A Relic of St. La Salle will be available for veneration in the Basilica, displays from each Lasallian School will be exhibited, choirs, singers and musicians from schools around the country will perform and mass will be celebrated followed by a Remembrance ceremony.

Carlingford Lough Greenway public consultation Louth County Council held an information event on Tuesday, February 19 at the Station House, Carlingford, Co Louth as part of a public consultation on the Carlingford Lough Greenway project.

The €3.46 million project is funded under the European Union’s INTERREG VA Programme, which is managed by the Special EU Programmes Body (SEUPB). It is led by Louth County Council, working in collaboration with Newry, Mourne and Down District Council and East Border Region Ltd. Match-

funding has been provided by the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport in Ireland and the Department for Infrastructure in Northern Ireland. When completed, the Carlingford Lough Greenway will provide a world-class cross-border green travel route.

The project will extend for approximately 20km from Carlingford to Newry City, providing a commuter and recreational facility for the area. The new 10.1km stretch will build on the popular Carlingford Marina to Omeath Greenway.

Louth County Council, Councillor Liam Reilly said: “The Carlingford Lough Greenway is a fantastic amenity for this area that we hope will inspire active travel.

When it’s complete, we envisage that it will create a safe and attractive traffic-free cross-border route from Carlingford to Newry for commuters and recreational users alike. This is a community project and it is important that the community is aware of what it’s about and the benefits it will provide when it’s finished.”

Gary bounces back to claim bronze After just narrowly missing out on a podium position the previous week at the NI Open, Lordship man, and member of Team Torres Dundalk Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu club, Gary Keenan, emboldened with grit and determination, made the long trek down early on Sunday morning to Portarlington, Co Laois to represent the local club in the Midlands Open.

Gary, determined to do himself and the club proud, progressed to the third place playoffs where he faced Gergely Magyar, of Samson Martial Arts in Cork. In what was an exciting match Gary claimed victory by finishing his opponent with an Arm-bar and thereby securing a well deserved Bronze medal in the Middleweight division.

He was accompanied and supported by Newry team mates Mark Cartmill who took gold in the Featherweight Divison and Dylan Nooney who unluckily finished just outside the medal table at this time of asking.

The Newry to Victoria Lough section opened last May and is already proving hugely popular so I am looking forward to the next stage being completed, linking Newry to Carlingford.”

At present, just 2.7 per cent of cross-border commuters travel to work or education by bike or on foot and the aim of this INTERREG programme is to get people

out of their cars by providing an attractive active alternative. In an effort to increase this number to 10 per cent by 2023, a crossborder Greenway Activity Programme will be developed under the themes of sustainable transport, active travel, healthy living and social cohesion.

“Businesses and education institutions that cater for a significant number of cross-border commuters will also be encouraged to promote the use of the greenway.

CEO of the SEUPB, Gina McIntyre said: “Sustainable

transport is a key objective of the EU’s INTERREG VA Programme and the Carlingford Lough Greenway will provide a more environmentally friendly travel option to local commuters and visitors alike. I am delighted that we are now at public consultation stage for this stretch of the Greenway and I look forward to its completion.”

It is intended that Part 8 planning permission for the Carlingford Lough Greenway will be sought in early March and that work will begin on this phase of the project in early 2020.

Dundalk Swim Club Quartet to compete at prestigious international event Four Dundalk Swimmers have achieved qualification times for the prestigious Dave McCullagh International Open in Bangor later this month.

This is the first time the Club will have four swimmers competing at a Level 5 Gala.

Evelyn Donnelly, Eliza Logan, Rebekah Friel and Skye Kasozi will compete in a combined nine events across the strokes and distances.

The quartet head to Bangor on the weekend of 22-24th February to compete alongside

some of Ireland’s 2020 Tokyo Olympic hopefuls including Niamh Coyne Youth Olympic Games Silver Medalist and Senior National Record holders Mona McSharry, Conor Ferguson and Brendan Hyland.

Walshe, who was the 2018 Golfer of the Year, has emerged from his winter hibernation in flying form and last week he was just edged out on countback in the second outing of the 2019 Hilary series at Seapoint Golf Club. On a cold and blustery

day, on a course playing to its full length, Walshe shot a 74 and was pipped for victory by Royal Dublin’s Kevin Knightly (3) who eagled the par five 18th to pip the Dundalk player on countback.

This is a big year for Eoin Murphy as he moves into senior elite ranks and the plus one handicapper will take a lot of heart from his 73 at the Hilary outing which was enough to claim the gross prize.

Robert MeeLucey, Caitlín Rooney and Krzysztof Baran took part in the Senior section where they had to speak about a topical issue as Gaeilge for four minutes each. They gave great performances on the day receiving high commendation from the judges in what was a hotly contested competition involving schools from across the region.

Edward will now proceed to the final of the competition later this year where he will compete against winners from the other regions.

€250,000 for local access roads in Louth - McGahon

Rural Louth residents are set to benefit from €250,000 funding for local access roads, a Fine Gael Councillor has said.

Cllr. John McGahon said the funding provided through the Local Improvement Scheme helps improve people’s quality of life in local areas.

Cllr. McGahon said: “This scheme continues to be a lifeline for people living in rural areas because

it directly improves their access to and from their homes and farms.

“It’s important to remember that many people living in rural areas use these roads every day, so when these roads fall into disrepair, it has a significant impact on them.

“By investing in the improvement of these roads we are helping to improve people’s quality of life in Louth.

“The upkeep of these roads is a priority for people who live in Louth and this funding, in conjunction with the local community’s own resources and the resources of Louth County Council will allow for the maintenance and improvement of many local roads in rural areas.

“Local Authorities are still completing projects approved under the last round of funding in Oc-

tober 2018, and nowFine Gael in Government is announcing additional funding for the scheme in 2019.”

Cllr. McGahon continued: “I am also conscious of the high cost of repairing some of the more remote rural roads and the impact this can have on the contribution which people living and farming along those roads can be asked to make.

“As part of the scheme in 2019, I am placing a cap of €1,200 on the amount that any individual householder or landowner will be asked to contribute towards the cost of repairs.

“This small but important change to the scheme will, I hope, facilitate the improvement of some of the more remote and sparsely populated roads in rural parts of Louth.

“I cannot overstate how

important local connectivity is in order to enable rural Ireland to function well. The Action Plan for Rural Development prioritises the improvement of rural infrastructure and connectivity and continuing to support and develop an LIS scheme is just one of the measures we are taking in that regard.”

ment, Michael Ring, said: “The scheme, since I reintroduced it in 2017, has been a great success and I continue to receive an unprecedented amount of positive feedback in relation to it.

“There was no dedicated funding for the LIS for a number of years, so there is significant built up demand for investment in these roads which I am committed to meeting.”

Students raise funds for Heart Foundation

Coláiste Chú Chulainn students stepped up to the mark this week on behalf of Irish Heart Foundation. They spent St Valentines Day packing groceries for customers in Dunnes Stores.

The donations were to

help the work of Irish Heart Foundation and Principal Thomas Sharkey praised the students for their efforts.

“Our students have shown again they have a great sense of social responsibility. They know

that coronary health is a major issue in Ireland and were delighted to support this charity. All credit goes to the students - they came up with the proposal and carried out the work,” he stated.

Criticism of access to respite service

Fianna Fáil TD for Louth Declan Breathnach has lashed out about the new respite house on the Dublin Road, Dundalk as he has learned that it is not fully wheelchair accessible, and not suitable for high dependency clients who require nursing care.

“I wrote today to both Minister Simon Harris and Minister Finian McGrath about this ridiculous situation. I along with the families attended many meetings with the Head of Social Care, HSE in the run-up to this service coming onstream, and at no time was it outlined that the house would only be suitable for low dependency clients, and that the premises would

not be fully wheelchair accessible, said Breathnach.

“Again, families of those with complex needs are losing out on this new service, which was hailed as a great boost to the existing services. There is pressure on the existing services suited to the needs of high dependency clients with complex care needs, and the families cannot be guaranteed respite care for their loved ones when they seek it.

“I will continue to be a voice for these families, and insist that any new respite service is fully equipped and suited to care for high dependency clients, concluded Breathnach.

Seizure of Counterfeit Goods in Ardee Gardaí attached to Ardee Drugs Unit assisted by local units and officers of the Department of Revenue carried out a search of a house on Bridge Street, Ardee on Tuesday February 12 under a Section 25 warrant of the Trades Mark Act, 1996. As a result of the search a substantial amount of boxed containers with clothing were seized with brands found to include Adidas, Calvin Klein, Hugo Boss and Ralph Lauren, with an estimated street value of €500,000. Some documentation and a large amount of packaging for the resale of the clothing was also seized. No arrests were made during the search and investigations are ongoing.

Irish Water replacing ageing water mains in Muirhevnamor

Irish Water, working in partnership with Louth County Council, is commencing works to replace ageing water mains to improve security of supply, reduce leakage, and improve water quality in Muirhevnamor, Dundalk. The programme to replace 2.7 km of ageing water mains with high-density polyethylene (plastic) pipes is scheduled to commence on Friday 15, February. These works are being carried out as part of Irish Water’s national Leakage Reduction Programme.

Once complete, the benefits of the project will include a more reliable water supply for local customers on the public water supply in Muirevnamor.

The works will result in reduced leakage on the network.

Operational and maintenance costs will also be reduced as the network operation will require less maintenance.

The works will also involve laying new water service connections from the public water main in the road to customers’ property boundaries and connecting it to the customers’

water supply. Where the existing service connections on the public side are lead these will be replaced as part of this improvement work. The works will be carried out on behalf of Irish Water by GMC Utilities Group and are expected to be completed by mid-April.

Irish Water has planned the works in short sections in order to limit impact on customers. Traffic management will be in place over the course of the works. Works may involve some short-term water shut offs and the project

Awards for Youth Theatre

MAD Youth Theatre returned with three top awards from the Czech Republic last week after taking part in the Class In Action International Youth Theatre Festival in Prague.

The young actors Calvin Magee, Darija Martinkute, Cole Cumiskey, Hazel Mulholland, Paul Malone, Luci Watters, Clodagh Vaughan, Eabha Nugent, Leo Mullen, Cian Geraghty, Jessica Woodlock and Scott McHugh spent five memorable days site seeing, taking part in theatre workshops and performance competition.

They worked over several weeks devising an original

play ‘TwentyOneNineteen’ a post apocalyptic dystopian play that explores the themes of climate change, migration and power.

MAD YT wanted to create and produce something different for the festival the last two times they brought a heavy hitting issue based plays but they wanted to show flexibility and range in the young actors but still have an impact on the audience.

Dundalk Institute of Technology (DkIT) has launched a new Certificate in Lean Six Sigma (Green Belt) programme in conjunction with the Cavan Innovation & Technology Centre (CITC).

The 12-week part-time programme aims to equip professionals with the tools and methodologies necessary to transform their businesses by driving new quality improvements and efficiencies within an organisation.

The first evening class commenced on Thursday January 31 and included participants from a variety of sectors including manufacturing, food production, engineering, business among others.

During the course of the programme, participants will be introduced to key principles of the DMAIC (Define, Measure, Analyse, Improve & Control) methodology, a data-driven quality strategy for improving processes, and is an integral part of any company’s Six Sigma Quality Initiative.

Six Certificate programmes across three locations in Cavan including Lakeland Dairies in Killeshandra, Manor Farm in Shercock and now the CITC in Cavan town. Louth Youth Folk Orchestra to play National Concert Hall On Saturday, 9 February, young musicians from Nós Nua - Louth Youth Folk Orchestra will take to the stage of the National Concert Hall, Dublin, as part of the 24th annual ‘Festival of Youth Orchestras,’ hosted by the Irish Association of Youth Orchestras (IAYO).

A joint initiative of Music Generation Louth and The Oriel Centre Dundalk Gaol (Comhaltas Regional Centre), Nós Nua aims to bring young musicians of diverse playing genres together to explore Louth’s local traditions. Drawn from

across four counties – Louth, Meath, Monaghan and Armagh – and under the guidance of experienced composers and musicians, members of this folk orchestra have been meeting since October 2017, working together to create unique arrangements of new and existing traditional repertoire.

The IAYO ‘Festival of Youth Orchestras’ is a noncompetitive event that aims to give youth orchestras and their young players the opportunity to perform on Ireland’s national stage. In addition to bringing together ensembles

from various counties, this highly-anticipated event also celebrates the achievements of youth orchestras in communities and schools throughout Ireland. To date the Festival has featured performances by more than 9,000 young musicians, including previous performances by Music Generation Laois partners the Laois School of Music Orchestra.

This Saturday Nós Nua will make their debut performance in the National Concert Hall, where they will perform as part of the evening concert at the Festival.

One in eight suspect they know an uninsured driver Over one in eight Irish motorists suspect that they know of at least one person who is currently driving uninsured, highlighting what has in recent years become a growing problem on Irish roads.

In response to a recent AA Ireland survey of over 2,500 motorists, 7.64% of respondents stated that they strongly believe they know at least one person driving without insurance currently. Meanwhile, a further 5.17% stated that they were somewhat convinced that they knew of at least one uninsured driver among their social circle.

The AA’s findings come despite a reported decrease in the number of insurance claims relating to uninsured drivers.

According to the Motor Insurers Bureau of Ireland, claims relating to damage caused by uninsured drivers dropped by 8% in the first half of 2018.

“After years of calling for the establishment of a database to assist Gardaí in identifying uninsured drivers alongside the wider use of Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) technology, it does appear that some progress is finally being made in this space.

An initial trial of using ANPR and the newly established Motor Third Party Liability (MRPL) database began in late 2018 but we now need government to commit to providing An Garda Síochána with everything they need to ensure this technology can be used more widely as soon as possible,” Conor Faughnan, AA Director of Consumer Affairs stated. “While finally completing this work would represent significant forward progress in trying to stamp out uninsured driving, the fact that we are still discussing this use of this technology in 2019 highlights how glacial this progress has been.”

“Similar technologies have been in use in the UK, Northern Ireland and elsewhere for a number of years, but while other jurisdictions were keeping up with the times we were still asking Gardaí to police uninsured driving with little more than a flashlight to check insurance discs on dark, gloomy nights.”

The AA’s survey also found significant support among motorists for the establishment of a specialist Garda unit tasked with tackling incidents of insurance fraud and uninsured driving.

71.81% of those surveyed stated that they are strongly supportive of the introduction of a Gardaí unit to police incidents of fraud, uninsured driving or accidents involving unidentified vehicles.

Meanwhile, a further 16.39% indicated that they would be somewhat supportive of establishing such a unit, with just 1.93% of motorists indicating they were strongly opposed to this.

“Estimates from Insurance Ireland indicate that every motorist in Ireland pays an additional €50 on their insurance premiums in order to cover the costs associated with insurance fraud and uninsured drivers, so it hardly comes as a surprise that such a strong majority want to see direct action taken to tackle these issues,” Faughnan added.

“Whether such a unit is introduced is ultimately a matter for An Garda Síochána and the Government to decide, but what we can say with a degree of certainty is that the current status quo can’t be allowed to continue and that more direct action to tackle these issues is required – with the wider use of ANPR and the MRPL database being a positive first step in the right direction.”
