Streets light up for Dundalk’s first ever bike disco

DUNDALK’S town centre was alive with colour, music, and movement on Saturday evening as hundreds of cyclists and spectators turned out for the town’s first-ever Bike Disco.

The event began at Market Square at 6:30pm, where participants gathered in front of Panama Coffee before setting off on a musical cycle through the town. The route wound its way along Clanbrassil Street, Church Street, Bridge Street, Linenhall Street, Crowe Street, Francis Street, Park Street, and the Demesne, before returning to the Square for more laps and an impromptu street party.

Music was supplied by I BIKE Dublin, the group renowned for their highenergy monthly rides in the capital.

The event attracted cyclists of all ages and abilities from seasoned riders to families with young children. Trike bikes were available at the Square for younger participants, ensuring that everyone could take

part safely.

Louth Disability Cycling Club praised the event’s inclusivity and atmosphere, saying:

“The Bike Disco was a fantastic celebration of community spirit and accessibility. It was wonderful to see people of all ages and abilities enjoying cycling together in such a fun and welcoming environment.

“Events like this show that cycling can truly be for everyone, whether you’re on two wheels, three wheels, or cheering from the sidelines. We were delighted to take part and hope to see even more inclusive community rides like this in the

future.”

Following the success of Saturday’s Bike Disco, locals are reminded that the Louth Disability Cycling Club will soon benefit from a special Race Night fundraiser at Dundalk Stadium on Saturday, 15th November.

Organised by local man Conor Duffy and his family, the evening will feature live greyhound racing, a DJ, and a raffle, all in support of the club’s ongoing work to make cycling accessible for people of all ages and abilities across County Louth.

Tickets are €10 and available from Panama Coffee (Market Square),

Crilly’s Shop (Ravensdale), or through the Louth Disability Cycling Club Facebook page. Those unable to attend can still contribute via the club’s GoFundMe page, with every donation helping to maintain and expand their fleet of adaptive bikes and trikes.

Local businesses are also invited to sponsor races or prizes, with all proceeds going directly toward supporting inclusive cycling in the community.

For more information or to get involved, contact the club at louthdisabilitycyclingclub @gmail.com or phone 086 405 5693.

Dundalk’s group AAMP releases ‘Miracle’ music video

THE beginning of November saw Dundalk’s own inclusive music choir called AAMP - or All Abilities Music Project - release their music video to ‘Miracle’, which is a song by a Louth-based original band Makings. The project was funded by Creative Ireland and facilitated by Louth County Council.

The group, consisting of children with additional needs and their families and friends practiced from late April to October under the direction of a teacher and performer Fionnuala Morgan. The series of weekly rehearsals concluded in recording sessions in St. Helena’s Park, Market Square and outside Dundalk’s most celebrated music venue - Spirit Store, where AAMP were joined by Makings’ rapper Cairon, who contributed with his original whirlwind verses.

‘’The concept of AAMP was created during one of our car trips in the late Summer of 2024. Eimear and I, both mothers of children with additional needs, had co-founded All Abilities Action Alliance Louth earlier that year, and our weekend trips with kids used to turn into brainstorming sessions. Both having a strong connection with music and kids who love music, it was just a matter of time and resources.’’

- says Alexandra Jedrzejewska, cocreator of AAMP. ‘We were playing Makings in the car and when ‘Miracle’ came on Eimear said that it was a perfect song for our group. It was a very special song to me too, as it was written during covid lockdown about my son Tristan by his dad - a song about unconditional love. I approached Patrick on the very same day and he was chuffed about the

idea. At the time, however, we were doing a lot of advocacy work and I was looking after my ill brother, so it wasn’t until February 2025, when AAMP was revisited and gained its name. When Creative Ireland Programme funding was announced by 4AL Secretary, I just knew that this was a chance to get the project off the ground and a chance not to miss. I wanted to create an inclusive singing group but also for the group to record their creation and to be able to look back at it and to share it with others. With ‘Miracle’ we had an inestimable advantage of a completely ready song, a full backing track and the songwriter’s permission to record and release it, but we needed the funds to cover the costs of production and hiring a choir director. I also couldn’t see ‘Miracle’ without Cairon’s rapping in it, so I

was over the moon when he agreed to take part. Creative Ireland approved our project and we quickly began the process of the formation of our inclusive choir.’’

‘’I heard about the AAMP project through the 4AL group and I was immediately interested as both my neuro divergent kids are musically inclined. My daughter was very excited at the prospect of recording a song and video. ‘ says Brian Crilly, one of the members and coordinators of the project. -’’ At the outset I hadn’t envisioned singing myself but was encouraged to do so by the musical director Fionnula and I guess as there were fewer male voices I really needed to step up. My daughter was initially resistant to my involvement but over the weeks this has become a great bonding activity for us. She has also made some great new friends through the project who I think will

remain good friends for life. It has also helped me realise how much I do love singing even though I’m not very good, the choir allows me that outlet.

I have thought for a long time that group singing is such a rare thing because it creates such a sense of togetherness and community among the participants but also among anyone who sees it. Truly one of the great gifts of humanity.’’

‘’We heard of AAMP from a Facebook post on the 4AL page. It has been such a warm, welcoming and inviting group from the beginning. I was intrigued by the project and inclusion at its heart as we’ve so often been met with inaccessibility at so-called ‘all abilities / inclusive’ events. However, inclusive it certainly was, not even batting an eyelid when the bay was brought along also! The organisation and pas-

sion from the organisers has made the whole experience fun, enjoyable and rewarding.’’ - says another member, Munny.

‘’Being part of AAMP has been a truly joyful experience. It’s an inclusive space where everyone is celebrated and friendships flourish. Taking part in the choir’s video project was an unforgettable highlight — a chance for the everyone to express themselves creatively and see their hard work come to life on screen. AAMP is so much more than a choir — it’s a community filled with music, laughter, and belonging.’ adds Fionnuala.

While AAMP’s first project concluded, the group begun rehearsals for their Christmas Concert in the Spirit Store on the 14th of December.

‘Miracle’ music video can be seen on AAMP YouTube channel or through Facebook and Instagram.

Still fighting for fair rent, fixity of tenure and free sale letters to the editor

Dear Editor,

When the English “owned” Ireland the farmers were fighting for the three F’s. Fair rent, Fixity of tenure and Free sale.

In those days, the rent was whatever the landlord demanded. If you increased the value of the farm or house by careful industry, the rent went up. The family could be evicted at any time, if they could not pay or if anyone else offered more. No fixity of tenure.

Gladstone, an Englishman with a sense of justice, fought in parliament to get their “rights”. Now we own most of our island. Now we have our own Irish government. What do we want?

‘Fair rent, Fixity of tenure and Freedom to buy.

However, to buy a house now, we are in

competition with big corporations who can buy in bulk and squeeze us out of the market. We are also in competition with local councils, who can outbid individuals. We are also handicapped by the huge numbers of immigrants and the inadequate number of houses. Yes, the prices go up but the houses are not always there to buy.

If we managed to buy a house, we pay a mortgage, we keep it in repair, it is not a source of income, it is an expense.

The local councils need money. We pay income tax, V.A.T. , PRSI, etc. That goes to Dublin. They share it out among local councils. But they need MORE, so they charge us LOCAL PROPERTY TAX. This replaces the RATES that were abolished. We are taxed on putting a roof over our heads. We are taxed for being responsible citizens.

If we only rent, then we should get into social housing. That way, we will not be responsible for repairs, the excess rent will be paid for us, and we will not be evicted. Mortgage holders can be evicted if “vulture funds” buy their mortgage agreements and change the conditions. No fixity of tenure. Mortgage holders can also lose their jobs and be unable to keep up the repayments. In that case, they had better get the dole and try for social housing. If they manage to survive long enough to get both, they will make sure they never fall into the trap of working to pay taxes and mortgages again. It is not safe. That system encourages people to be work-shy (Not lazy. Just afraid.) Shame on our government for being no better than the English. Briege Connolly, Dundalk.

All Abilities Music Project will follow up the release of their new single ‘Miracle’ with a special Christmas concert in the Spirit Store on the 14th of December.

“This funding will ensure that more people, regardless of age or ability can safety enjoy Louth natural waters.”

‘Light Up Your Bike’ safety event in Dundalk

MORE than 100 sets of rechargeable bike lights were distributed at Monday’s ‘Light Up Your Bike’ event held at Dundalk Institute of Technology and O’Fiaich College. The initiative was organised by Green Party Councillor Marianne Butler in partnership with An Garda Síochána’s Community Policing Unit and the Road Safety Authority (RSA).

The event aimed to raise awareness about cyclist visibility and safety during the darker winter months. Alongside free rechargeable lights, participants received high-visibility vests and bags to help them stay seen on the roads.

Cllr. Butler expressed her gratitude to the community: “Cycling is such a great way to get around Dundalk, but as the evenings draw in it’s so important that cyclists light up and stay visible to other road users. It was fantastic to see so many students, commuters and families come along. Together we distributed over 100 sets of lights and plenty of hi-vis gear.”

She added: “Events like this really highlight the community spirit we have here in Dundalk. A big thank you to An Garda Síochána’s Community Policing Unit and the RSA for their support, and to everyone who stopped by to light up their bikes.”

Ó Murchú raises issue of sixth class students not getting preferred secondary schools

THE issue of sixth class students missing out on places at their preferred secondary school was highlighted in Leinster House last week by Dundalk TD Ruairí Ó Murchú.

The Sinn Féin deputy said that a number of families had been in touch with him in the past fortnight after initial offers were made by Dundalk secondary schools.

He read quotes from several families that included: ‘My daughter got rejected. We are absolutely devastated’; ‘my son has not been selected for any school for next year; ‘my son is now the only boy from his soccer team, Gaelic team and hurling team that does not have a school place for next year. A lot of his friends have had multiple offers’; ‘the process should be changed to a system where

kids can put their choices in order of preference and each child be allocated one school place’.

Deputy Ó Murchú said: “That has been done in certain places - I am not saying

Buttlerly backs Greenway protestors

FINE Gael TD for Louth Paula Butterly has vowed to support landowners in Cooley who were protesting outside the Dáil last Wednesday over plans to build a Greenway on the Cooley Peninsula. They were protesting the planned Compulsory Purchase Orders for the proposed Greenway. Having spoke with the protestors outside the Dáil, Deputy Paula Butterly has released this statement on the matter.

“Yesterday, I met with constituents outside Dail Eireann protesting the Compulsory Purchases of private land for the proposed Cooley Peninsula Greenway.

I wholeheartedly understand the constituents’ concerns. Many of these residents have held on to these parcels of land to pass on to their family members.

We have fought hard to make sure that rural regeneration continues to flourish under this government. Notwithstanding changes to the County Development Plan in 2021, the Cooley Peninsula remains a restricted area in terms of housing. We therefore need to support landowners with their family living nearby.

It is hard to imagine a scenario where the suggested route will not cut through plots of land that were destined for the next generation.

The average cost of an acre in Cooley is €17,000 with the average cost of a site being between €100,000 and 150,000 in the Carlingford area.

No amount of compensation for CPO’d land will leave young couples in a position to make up the difference and buy a site in the Cooley Peninsula or buy a house in nearby towns.”

perfectly - and it needs to be looked at”.

In response, Tánaiste Simon Harris said: “Minister for Education Helen McEntee, is doing what the Deputy suggested by putting in place that kind of common application system - I think that is the phrase.

“It is rolled out in a number of areas to test it. This year, it is hoped that it may be rolled out more broadly in the time ahead. We are also trying to bring forward dates for enrolment and the like.

“I will ask the Minister to specifically look at the issues in relation to Louth and come back to him directly”.

Deputy Ó Murchú also asked for a timeline for this rollout to be disclosed and the Tánaiste said he would ask Minister McEntee to do this too.

Message in a Bottle —A Dundalk Lions Project sponsored by Louth Local Development

THE Message in a Bottle scheme is a simple idea designed to encourage vulnerable people, living on their own, to keep their basic personal details on a standard form and in a common location where they can be easily found in an Emergency, normally the fridge.

Why the fridge? It enables the Emergency Services to find the details quickly and easily, in a COMMON PLACE. In the event of fire, the contents of the fridge are protected longer.

There are two stickers, One is fixed to the back of the front door (or the door most used to access the premises), the second is attached to the door of the fridge Other useful information is recorded such as contact details for Next of Kin or friends to be notified in an emergency and even what provision is needed for any pets the participants may have. Participants are strongly encouraged to keep a copy of any repeat prescriptions in the bottle, as this will aid Paramedics and any hospital staff to ensure that the cor-

‘Light

rect drugs are administered in the emergency.

If the participant has a specific medical condition and routinely wears an SOS Talisman bracelet or necklace, they should CONTINUE to wear it.

The Dundalk Lions Message in a Bottle Scheme is recognised by H.S.E., Ambulance, Fire Service and First Responders. In 2025 Dundalk Lions Club distributed over 1,000 Bottles locally.
