Magnificent SEVEN Seventh consecutive major medal for superstar Kate

By Paul Byrne NEWLY crowned European champion, Kate O’Connor, received a heroes welcome at her homecoming on Monday evening as Dundalk came out in the rain to congratulate their hometown hero. The homecoming which fittingly took place at the brand new Athletics track just off Hoey’s Lane saw excited fans both young and old greet Kate with rapturous applause.

O’Connor’s triumph in Birmingham was built on two outstanding days of competition. She opened on Friday with a personal best of 13.30 in the 100m hurdles, collecting 1,080 points, before matching her high jump best with a clutch third-attempt clearance at 1.86m for another 1,054 points.

A final-round effort of 13.96m in the shot put added 791 points before another personal best of

23.79 in the 200m brought her opening day to a close.

O’Connor began Saturday 42 points off the lead but quickly transformed the complexion of the competition. A superb 6.55m (+2.0m/s) personal best in the long jump was followed by a 50.16m javelin effort with her very first throw, earning 863 points and putting the Irishwoman 51 points clear heading into the decisive 800m.

Oosterwegel needed to finish approximately three-and-a-half seconds ahead of O’Connor in the final event to overhaul the Irish athlete, but O’Connor never allowed her gold-medal position to come under serious threat.

She remained close to her Dutch rival throughout before crossing the line third in 2:11.74, collecting another 939 points and sealing European gold.

Continued From Page 1 O’Connor is arguably Ireland’s most famous athlete right now thanks to her exploits over the last eighteen months in particular where she has racked up an amazing seven consecutive medals at her last seven major championships. That phenomenal run began in March last year when she claimed bronze for the Pentathlon at

the European Indoor Championships in the Netherlands.

Just weeks later she upgraded to silver at the World Indoor Championships in China. In July of 2025 she claimed Gold at the World University Games in Germany before rounding off a medal laden year with her biggest achievement to date when she won silver in the Heptathlon at the World Championships

in Tokyo, Japan.

In March of this year she won bronze in the Pentathlon at the World Athletic Indoor Championships in Poland before claiming gold at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow last month. 17 days later she won gold again edging out Netherlands Emma Oosterwegel by 38 points while breaking her own national record of 6,751 points.

Assuming she stays fit O’Connor will be a live gold medal contender for both the World Championships in Beijing next year as well as the Olympics in LA in 2028. Kate’s Dad and coach Michael O’Connor says he will do everything in his power to help his daughter achieve her dreams and become Olympic Champion.

“The plan now is to take a well-earned break and in a few weeks we will sit down and map out our plan for the next couple of years. The great thing for me as a coach is I know that Kate has more improvement in her. She didn’t execute the perfect competi-

tion in Birmingham but she did enough to get it done and she was a deserved winner. She will get better and she will probably have to if she wants to win gold at the Olympics. She has fantastic drive and determination so it’s a privilege to be in her corner.

“We just need to try and do our best to keep her healthy and fit and as I say we will have a break first and then we will plot out our plans for the next couple of years. The more she keeps winning the bigger the target on her back becomes. She is no longer the underdog. She’s a champion now and expectations are high. Kate is able to carry those expectations and as we have seen over the past 18 months or so she thrives in pressure situations and tends to produce her best stuff when it matters. Once again we want to thank the people of Ireland and especially Dundalk for all their support and hopefully we will give them even more to cheer over the next couple of years,” added Michael.

The Dundalk St Gerard’s AC athlete, who won silver at last year’s World Championships, capped a wonderful weekend with a third-place finish in the 800m on Satur-

day evening. It took her heptathlon points tally to 6,751 – an Irish record – and saw her become the third Irish woman, along with Sonia O’Sullivan and Ciara Mageean, to win a European Athletics Championships gold medal.

Cllr Dolores Minogue, Cathaoirleach of Louth County Council, said: “On behalf of the people

of County Louth, I extend my heartfelt congratulations to Kate on this truly historic achievement. To see a local athlete crowned European champion is a source of enormous pride for the entire county.

‘Morons’ throw lifebuoy ring into River Dee Poetry

SINN Féin Councillor Pearse McGeough has described vandals who threw a lifebuoy ring into the River Dee as ‘morons’.

Speaking on Thursday evening, Cllr McGeough said “we are at the height of summer and facing into our fourth heatwave and are actively warning people to be careful around rivers and water and then these morons throw lifesaving equipment into the River Dee at Dawson’s Desmene in Ardee.

“There is no excuse or justification for this kind of action. Everybody is aware that a lifebuoy ring along a river is an essential piece of equipment that should be left alone in case of an emergency.

These morons thought it was funny to vandalise it and throw it into the River.

I’m just thankful it wasn’t needed over those particular days before it was discovered.”

Meet the new DkIT Students’ Union Team

DUNDALK Institute of Technology (DkIT) has welcomed its new Students’ Union (SU) Team for the academic year 2026-2027. The team has now taken office and comprises three full-time officers: newly elected President Tobi Bewaji, returning Vice President for Welfare and Equality Rosheen Hornby, and Vice President for Engagement Kshitiz ‘Kayzee’ Mittal.

The three full-time members of the SU team will be joined by six part-time officers in October across a variety of roles such as Communications Officer, Academic

Officer, and Postgraduate Officer.

Having previously served as Vice President for Student Engagement and Vice President for Welfare and Equality, Tobi brings two years of SU experience to her new role as President.

Dundalk buildings approved for 13 apartments added to derelict register BUILDINGS at the corner of Earl Street and Market Square in Dundalk have been added to Louth County Council’s Derelict Sites Register, less than two years after planning permission was granted for 13 apartments and a ground-floor commercial unit.

The properties at 9, 9A and 10 Earl Street were entered on the register on 20th July, following notice

of the council’s intention to list them on 3rd September 2025, however, the register does not state what aspect of the properties’ condition led to their inclusion.

Under the Derelict Sites Act, a property may be placed on the register if the council considers its condition is having a significant negative impact on the surrounding area. This can include buildings that are

run-down or dangerous, neglected or unsightly land, or the presence of litter or waste. Urban properties on the derelict register can become liable for an annual levy calculated at 7% of its market value.

Arabtec Capital Unlimited secured conditional planning permission in December 2024 to partially demolish, refurbish and extend the existing buildings.

The approved plans provide for nine one-bedroom and four two-bedroom apartments, along with a 176.2sq m commercial unit at street level, with two additional floors also forming part of the development.

The application remains listed as finalised, with an expiry date of 8th December, 2029 and to date, no commencement notice has been received by the council.

FILM MADE WITH MULLAGHBUOY PUPILS Dundalk Meals SHORTLISTED FOR NATIONAL NATURE AWARD on Wheels

A BIODIVERSITY film made with pupils from Mullaghbuoy National School, Riverstown, has been shortlisted for a national nature award.

The short film “Meadow Magic”, which also involved students from Dundalk Institute of Technology, made the shortlist in the Nature Media category of the 2026 Working with Nature Awards.

Celebrating outstanding contributions to nature restoration, conservation, education and communication across the country, the awards were held at Powerscourt Estate on 23 July, and brought conservationists, educators,

filmmakers and community groups together from all over Ireland.

With a simple message, when parts of gardens and green spaces are allowed to grow wild, nature can thrive, Meadow Magic celebrates Ireland’s grasslands and the important role they play in supporting wildlife and pollinators.

Pupils aged between seven and ten got involved in every part of production including acting, scriptwriting, sound and filming and all the behindthe-scenes work, giving them new skills, confidence and a stronger appreciation for the

nature that surrounds them every day.

Meadow Magic was written

by Aoibhéann McCann and Paddy C. Courtney, and was directed and produced by McCann. The project was funded

by Louth County Council and the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) through the Local Authority Biodiversity Action Fund and support was also received from Athtach, DkIT and the All-Ireland Pollinator Plan and Ceangal.

Meadow Magic is now available to watch on Louth County Council’s YouTube channel.

DUNDALK Meals on Wheels relies on volunteer drivers to deliver hot meals to elderly and vulnerable individuals, primarily operating on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays on a rotating basis. Ideally 4-6 drivers would cover the two separate routes.

Drivers would be required to do every second week.

30th Anniversary film on lifting of Safer school route planned for Castle Road the Dundalk Central Signal Cabin

IN 1996, after many years of dedicated service, the Dundalk Central Signal Cabin was retired from operational use as it was no longer required. Recognising its historical importance, the then Station Master, Brendan McQuaid, arranged for the cabin to be carefully relocated from its original working location to its present position on the main station platform, ensuring its preservation for future generations.

Today, it stands as a lasting reminder of Dundalk’s rich railway heritage and the vital role signal cabins once played in the safe and efficient operation of the railway.

According to then stationmaster Brendan McQuaid the operation was no easy task with the cabin having to be lifted by a crane over the main Dundalk Carrickmacross Road bridge beside the station. “*Myself and Tom Devoy who was District Manager at the time decided that we would keep the cabin as we knew it was a wonderful piece of history. We had to get permission from the

Gardaí to get the road closed. The Signal Box was retired in 1996 and it was put on a trailer and brought to the CIE freight yard on the Ardee Road. On St Patrick’s Day of 1997 we put the signal box on to a wagon and pulled the wagon down beside the tracks.

“We had a crane in the car park of the train station and we lifted the cabin over the bridge and put it back on the wagon over the other side. We then relocated the cabin to where it is today on the Railway Platform. It was something we were determined to do as we knew it was of great his-

torical value and would add to the station and I think it has done that and it has got plenty of compliments from plenty of people down through the years.

“I have to congratulate Bernard McMahon for putting the video together of the operation.

I have watched it and it’s a fantastic look back into an important part of our local railway station history,” stated Brendan.

As part of the National Heritage Week the Dundalk Railway Heritage Society are showing a film of the transfer of the Central Railway Signal Box to its present position on Clarke Railway platform. The 40 minute video shows the Service Box being lifted from the southern approach side of the bridge to the northern approach. Hosepipe Ban in Ireland: What It Means for Households in Dundalk

By Darren Crawley AFTER several weeks of warm, dry weather, many people across Ireland have been enjoying sunshine that is more commonly associated with southern Europe than the north-east of the country. Lawns have turned brown, gardens have needed regular watering and paddling pools have become a familiar sight in many back gardens.

However, prolonged dry spells can place significant pressure on Ireland’s water supply. When reservoirs, rivers and treatment plants come under increasing strain, Uisce Éireann may introduce a hosepipe ban, formally known as a Water Conservation Order, to help protect essential water supplies.

For many people, the announcement of a hosepipe ban raises immediate questions. What exactly is prohibited? Who does it apply to? What happens if someone ignores the restrictions? Understanding how these measures work can help households avoid confusion while playing their part in protecting water supplies.

A hosepipe ban is introduced when water demand significantly exceeds the available supply or

when prolonged dry weather creates a risk to public water services.

The aim is not to inconvenience households unnecessarily but to ensure that enough treated drinking water remains available for essential daily needs such as drinking, cooking, washing and sanitation.

Under a typical Water Conservation Order, the use of a hosepipe for non-essential domestic purposes is prohibited. This generally includes watering gardens and lawns, washing private cars, filling ornamental ponds or fountains, cleaning patios and driveways, and topping up domestic swimming pools using a hose connected to the public water supply.

Many people are surprised to learn that the restrictions relate specifically to the use of a hosepipe or similar device connected to the mains water supply. Watering plants with a watering can or using stored rainwater is generally unaffected. Likewise, businesses operating under specific exemptions or carrying out essential activities may continue certain water uses where permitted.

The reason for these restrictions is straightforward. A garden hose can use hundreds of litres

of treated drinking water in a relatively short period. During periods of exceptionally high demand, this additional consumption can place enormous pressure on treatment plants and distribution networks that are already operating close to capacity.

Ignoring a hosepipe ban is not simply discouraged; it can have legal consequences. Water Conservation Orders are made under the Water Services Acts, and failing to comply may constitute an offence. While Uisce Éireann’s primary focus is on encouraging voluntary compliance through public awareness and education, enforcement powers do exist where necessary.

Fortunately, most people understand the importance of con-

serving water during periods of prolonged dry weather. Small changes, such as taking shorter showers, fixing leaking taps, collecting rainwater for gardens and only running dishwashers or washing machines with full loads, can collectively make a significant difference.

From a local perspective, water conservation has particular importance in Dundalk and across County Louth. Like many communities throughout Ireland, the area relies on a complex network of reservoirs, treatment plants and pipelines to provide safe drinking water every day. During extended periods of dry weather, demand often increases significantly as households spend more time outdoors, gardens require

additional care and businesses experience greater water usage.

Dundalk has experienced water supply challenges on a number of occasions in recent years, whether through planned maintenance, burst water mains or temporary supply interruptions.

These incidents serve as a reminder of how important it is to protect the water infrastructure that communities rely upon every day. Conserving water during dry periods helps reduce pressure on the network and supports a more reliable supply for everyone.

The impact extends beyond individual households. Local businesses, schools, healthcare facilities and emergency services all depend on a secure and consistent water supply. By reducing unnecessary water use, residents contribute to protecting these essential services, particularly during periods when demand is at its highest.

It is also worth remembering that climate patterns are changing. Experts have noted that Ireland is experiencing more frequent periods of prolonged dry weather alongside more intense rainfall events. While Ireland remains a country with relatively high annual rainfall, longer dry

spells can still create significant pressure on water resources, particularly where infrastructure is already under strain.

Ultimately, a hosepipe ban is about protecting a shared resource rather than preventing people from enjoying the summer. The temporary inconvenience of putting away the garden hose helps ensure that sufficient drinking water remains available for homes, hospitals, businesses and emergency services when it is needed most.

As Dundalk continues to enjoy the summer weather, the message is a simple one. Make the most of the sunshine, support local parks, cafés and businesses, and enjoy spending time outdoors, but remember that water is one of our most valuable resources. Using it responsibly today helps ensure that there is enough for everyone tomorrow.

Ancillary report funded by Coimisiún na Meán’s Courts Reporting Scheme

Resurfacing work completed on Hill Street Bridge WORK has been completed on Hill St Bridge to mark the completion of Stage 1 of resurfacing works. Work on Stage 2 is currently underway. During this period, the R172 (Avenue Road) will be closed from the junction with Tom Bellew Avenue to the traffic lights on Hill Street Bridge.

While most people seem to have welcomed the road improvement works there have been a number of people online questioning the decision to locate a bus stop on a hill especially with regards to people with disabilities who are travelling by bus.

One of those voicing his concerns about the location of the bus stop is Independent Ireland candidate Ryan McKeown “I welcome the road improvement works recently completed by Louth County Council on Hill Street Bridge.

These works were desperately needed, and I recognise the effort that has gone into improving the road and surrounding area.

“However, I have serious concerns about

the decision to locate a fully operational bus stop directly at the end of the bridge, particularly given that the stop is positioned on a hill.

“I have received a number of calls from wheelchair users and people with mobility difficulties who have raised concerns about the location of the bus stop. For passengers with disabilities, getting safely on and off a bus requires suitable, accessible and level conditions. Placing a bus stop on a slope could create unnecessary difficulties and safety concerns for passengers, particularly when boarding or exiting a bus. There is also a serious concern regarding traffic congestion.

“With the road now narrowed on both sides, I believe positioning a bus stop at this location will inevitably lead to traffic building up on the bridge, particularly when buses are stopped to pick up or drop off passengers.

“This is not simply a question of convenience. It is a question of safety, accessibility and proper planning. I believe the previous loca-

tion of the bus stop, outside Blue Sky Property Lettings, was a far more practical and safer option for passengers and other road users.

“The improvement works on Hill Street Bridge were badly needed, and I welcome them.

But improvements to our roads must work for everyone, including wheelchair users, people with mobility difficulties, pedestrians, bus passengers and motorists.

“I am therefore calling on Louth County Council and the relevant transport authorities to review the location of the bus stop and engage directly with local residents and people with disabilities before this becomes a bigger problem,” urged McKeown.

We should not have to wait for an accident, serious congestion or a passenger to experience difficulty before action is taken.

‘IT is imperative that we take road safety seriously in Louth’ says Cllr “I really feel it is imperative that we take road safety seriously in Louth,” Cllr Maeve Yore (Ind) told councillors as she called for fixed speed cameras and more Garda resources for the county.

She raised the issue at Louth County Council’s meeting on 20th July, four days after a man and woman in their 70s were killed in a collision on the R173 at The Bush, bringing to eight the number of people killed on Louth roads since the beginning of the year.

Cllr Yore said figures available at the time put Louth at the top of the

North Western Garda Region for road deaths and given her concerns, she told the meeting she had written three weeks earlier to the minister responsible for Justice, Public Expenditure and Transport, as well as Transport Infrastructure Ireland asking for fixed speed cameras, additional unmarked patrol cars and more Gardaí assigned to roads policing in Louth.

The county has mobile GoSafe zones, including 16 added at the beginning of this year, but none of the static speedcamera locations listed

by Gardaí are in Louth.

Cllr Yore also called for progress on the N2 and A5 road upgrades

and asked the council to bring the relevant authorities together to discuss the delays, telling the meeting that she wants a meeting involving Louth and Monaghan county councils, the relevant ministers, TII and other agencies.

Cllr Yore said the meeting was needed to address the “deficiencies” in Louth’s road-safety, to discuss further funding and get buy-in from the Minister for Justice to “try to alleviate road fatalities in our county”.

A council official said he would raise her request and come back to councillors on the matter.

THE Faughart parish came out to celebrate the Golden Jubilee of priests Fr Oliver Stansfield and Fr Christy McElwee as they celebrated 50 years since their ordination to the priesthood.

On Friday 31st July Fr Vinod welcomed local parishoners to St Brigid’s

Church in Kilcurry where a special celebratory Mass of Thanksgiving took place for the two priests. The mass was presided over by Bishop Michael Router.

Fr Oliver, originally from Tyrone and Fr McAlwee, originally from Derry were both in attendance

and received presentations to mark 50 years in the church. Both men have served in the Faughart Parish although Fr McAlwee is currently a priest in Omeath where his Golden Jubilee was also marked last month.

GREEN Party Councillor Marianne Butler has welcomed the opening of applications for 24 new Cost Rental homes at Hearthfield, Mount Avenue in Dundalk, and is encouraging local people to check their eligibility and apply.

Councillor Butler welcomed the news and encouraged anyone currently renting or looking for a home in Dundalk to check whether they meet the eligibility criteria.

“I am absolutely delighted that Dundalk is finally benefiting from Cost Rental housing.

I have kept the pressure on Louth County Council to deliver Cost Rental in Dundalk because local people should have access to a full range of affordable housing options. It is very welcome to see applications now open.”

Cost Rental was introduced in Ireland as a new form of affordable rental housing through the work of the Green Party in Government. The first Cost Rental homes were delivered in 2021, providing an additional housing option for people who may not qualify for social housing but are strug-

The 24 homes at Hearthfield are being provided by Tuath Housing, with monthly rents of €1,122 for two-bedroom homes and €1,407 for threebedroom homes. Cost Rental is a not-for-profit model, with rents designed to cover the cost of providing and managing the homes, while offering long-term security of tenure.

Councillor Butler is encouraging anyone currently renting or looking for a home in Dundalk to check whether they meet the eligibility criteria.

Applicants must generally have a net household income below €59,000, must not own a property, must not be receiving social housing supports such as HAP or Rent Supplement, and must have a household size appropriate to the property. Applicants must also demonstrate that they can afford the rent.

“I would strongly encourage people not to assume they are ineligible. Take a few minutes to check the criteria and see if you qualify,” Councillor Butler said.

Applications are being made online through Tuath Housing and are open for a limited period. Eligible applications will subsequently be entered into a random lottery before applicants are selected for assessment.

Councillor Butler said she will continue to push for more Cost Rental and affordable housing in Dundalk, adding that “we need to make sure this is not a once-off and that local people have access to a meaningful supply of affordable and secure rental homes into the future.”

Councillors call for GAA Championship games to be free to air THE wee county’s recent run to their first All-Ireland senior football semi-final since 1957 gave supporters a summer few are likely to forget, but supporters following their county from home can find some games available only through a paid streaming service.

Cllr Rachel Kerley (FG) wants that to change, and the cross-party support her motion received at Louth County Council’s July meeting shows that other councillors do too. The motion called on the GAA to make all senior intercounty football and hurling games available on free-to-air television in 2027 and, where needed, on other online streaming platforms so that everyone should be able to watch their county team compete at inter-county championship matches.

Cllr Kerley told the meeting that attending every game was out of reach for many families, while paywalls and the move to streaming platforms had made it harder for others to watch from home.

“It’s not feasible for everyone, especially people with young kids, to go to every game,” she said.

“Fans should be able to watch their county play without the restriction of paywalls.”

Referencing her own 86-yearold grandfather who would “happily sit down to watch any GAA match shown on television” she said the move online has “effectively prevented him from doing something he has enjoyed for years.

“We’ve seen some cracking GAA matches, and it would be a shame if people who don’t have access to the internet, or who can’t afford another subscription, are simply unable to watch them,” said after the meeting.

Supporting the motion, Cllr Ejiro O’Hare Stratton (FG) said young people were also missing out because they could not always travel to games while Cllr Marianne Butler (GP) said accessing GAA+ could be “very tricky”, particularly for older supporters.

Cllr Shane McGuinness (FF) also supported the motion saying people sometimes had no choice but to go to their local GAA club if they wanted to see a game and that his own parents sometimes had difficulty accessing the games on the streaming platform.

He said he believed the decision to not to allow games to be shown free-to-air was a financial one and suggested the GAA could, at the very least, offer passes or credits to young people and pensioners.

“The GAA are doing a lot of good work with the local clubs but they could do more around the screening of matches,” he said.

Also in support, Cllr Pearse McGeough (SF) spoke about what the past few years had meant for Louth supporters, adding the atmosphere in the run-up to the All-Ireland semi-final against Mayo had been “fantastic” and everyone should be able to watch their county play.

“There really is no reason why games coverage can’t co-exist as free-to-air and streaming,” Cllr Declan Power (Ind) said adding, he felt it was unfair that supporters missed some of the best games because they were not shown free to air.

GAA+ carried 40 exclusive Championship games in Ireland during the 2026 season. The service says 83% of the profits it generates will be reinvested in coaching, local clubs, county and player-welfare aid.

Cllr Kerley is not arguing that streaming should be done away with. “I completely recognise that online streaming has its place, particularly for people living abroad or those who want greater access to games,” she said.

“But I think we need to find a way for both to co-exist without creating barriers for people who want to watch and support our sport. The GAA belongs to everyone, and I think everyone should have the opportunity to watch it.”

Council hopes to retrofit up to 300 homes this year UP to 300 council homes in Louth could be made warmer and more energy-efficient this year, 80 more than the original target set for 2026. The Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage allocated funding to retrofit 220 homes in the county in 2026 under the Energy Retrofit Programme (EERP), up from 140 last year. According to Louth County Council (LCC) it now believes it may be able to stretch that funding further after securing what officials at the council’s July meeting described as “good value” through its tendering process.

“Through efficiencies of scale, careful property selection, and prudent management of the programme, it is anticipated that additional units may be completed beyond the allocated target,” the council stated.

The final number of completed

units is not yet known, and will depend on a range of factors but the council is aiming to complete as many as 300 homes by the end of the year, though that figure is subject to change.

“Regardless of the final total achieved, the council strongly welcomes both the increased funding allocation for 2026 and the potential to retrofit additional homes beyond the initial allocation through the effective management of the programme,” LCC stated.

Cllr Marianne Butler (GP) welcomed the news at July’s council meeting, saying it was important ahead of what could be a difficult winter for households struggling with energy costs.

“I was reading the chief executive’s report and I was blown away and delighted,” she said.

“To see that we are able to do

additional units with the same money, we need to be shouting this from the rooftops.

Furthermore, and separately, more council homes than originally planned are also set to have their windows and doors replaced under the separate Planned Maintenance Programme. The council says it is assessing the scope of these additional works but it expects work to begin this September, adding it is “committed to improving the quality, comfort, and energy efficiency of its housing stock for tenants across the county.”

Louth councillors back call to protect local journalism CUTS to local newsrooms in light of the recent job losses at LMFM, have prompted Louth County Council to write to the government and the media regulator, following a motion brought

by Independent Cllr Maeve Yore and backed by councillors at Louth County Council’s July meeting.

The motion called for the council to affirm its support for independent, trusted and highquality local media and journalism and to write to Coimisiún na Meán, the Taoiseach and the Minister for Communications to emphasise the importance of local radio and reporting in sustaining a shared identity and sense of belonging across the country.

Cllr Yore said the loss of journalists from local newsrooms was not simply a matter for those working in the industry, but one that had consequences for the communities relying on them.

“They are at the heart and soul of our communities, and we trust them with our local news, our court cases and our local democ-

She referred to a Coimisiún na Meán report which, she said, found local media remained among the country’s most trusted news sources adding it was “beggars belief” that the regulator had approved what she called the “decimation of journalists and jobs”.

Referencing the impact of “fake news” on democracy, she also pointed to the United States and other countries where she said the decline of local media could have impacts on “social cohesion and democracy” and

asked, “Are we going to accept the same in Ireland?”

Councillors across the chamber were in support of the motion with Cllr Michelle Hall (Lab) saying the jobs lost at LMFM were a “huge loss”.

Cllr Marianne Butler (GP) welcomed the Local Democracy Reporting Scheme introduced by Coimisiún na Meán but said radio continued to be one of the most accessible ways for people to receive local news.

Cllr Sionainn McCann (SF) said how important fair and transparent local media was not only for councillors in their jobs but also for the local community.

“It gives a space that wouldn’t exist in terms of promoting local events, local people and local history and plays a bigger role in sustaining a shared identity and sense of belonging,” she added.

Though Cllr Robbie Nash (FG) supported the motion, he was less hopeful about the council’s ability to influence decisions made by media companies saying, “Unfortunately, it comes down to the bottom line.”

Louth councillors back call for new allowance to help with bin charges LOUTH councillors have backed a call for a new social welfare allowance to help vulnerable households pay their bin charges.

Cllr Fiona Mhic Conchoille (SF) brought the motion to the July meeting of Louth County Council amid concern about the rising cost of refuse and recycling services.

It calls on the Government and the Minister for Social Protection to establish a Waste Collection Allowance under the Household Benefits Package, which currently helps eligible households with electricity or gas costs.

Cllr Mhic Conchoille said bin charges were placing a growing financial burden on older people, those living alone, carers, people with disabilities and households on low incomes and described waste collection as an essential public health service and said households already struggling

with energy, food and housing costs should receive direct support towards the bill.

Her motion also called on the Government to work with local authorities and licensed waste operators to develop a scheme that would be practical and easy for eligible households to access.

Posting on social media after the meeting, Cllr Mhic Conchoille said waste collection was an unavoidable household expense.

“It is not a luxury, and it should not become a bill that vulnerable households are forced to struggle with or fall behind on,” she said.

She added the Government had previously pointed to Exceptional Needs Payments as a possible source of help but argued that these were designed for oneoff or exceptional circumstances, while waste collection was a regular bill faced by households

throughout the year.

“If the existing supports were adequately addressing the problem, we would not continue to hear from older people, carers and low-income families struggling with these charges,” she said.

Cllr Mhic Conchoille said the Household Benefits Package already provided a framework for helping people with essential household costs.

“This motion is about providing a more practical, fair and dignified approach,” she said.

“No one should have to choose between paying for essential needs and having their waste collected.”

The motion asked that a copy be forwarded to the Minister for Social Protection, the minister responsible for the environment, every local authority and Louth’s Oireachtas members.

Scam Warning: Unauthorised Council launches Sláintecare Healthy Communities Programme Individuals Claiming to carry out home energy upgrade works in Drogheda and Dundalk LOUTH County Council has launched the Sláintecare Healthy Communities Programme in Drogheda and Dundalk and appointed dedicated Development Officers to support communities in both towns.

The programme is a Healthy Ireland initiative funded by the Department of Health and delivered locally by Louth County Council and the HSE. Its aim is to reduce health inequalities and help people live healthier lives.

Drogheda and Dundalk have been identified as priority areas under the national programme and will benefit from additional investment and targeted community-led initiatives designed to improve health and wellbeing.

The programme takes a community-led approach, working with residents, community groups, voluntary organisations, and local agencies to identify priorities and deliver real place-based responses to local needs. It also provides opportunities for community initiatives to access support and funding.

Speaking about the programme, Cathaoirleach of Louth County Council, Cllr Dolores Minogue, said: “Health is influenced by much more than access to healthcare. Factors such as housing, education, employment, transport, community connections and access to services all have a significant impact on people’s health and quality of life.

“Through the Sláintecare Healthy Communities Programme, Louth County Council has an opportunity to work with communities and partner organisations to address these wider influences on health.

This programme will help us deliver practical, long-term improvements that support healthier and more resilient communities across County Louth.”

LOUTH County Council is urging members of the public to remain vigilant following reports of individuals calling to homes claiming to be carrying out home energy upgrade works on behalf of the council.

The Council wishes to remind all council tenants that: They will always receive advance notification from Louth County Council before any planned upgrade or maintenance works are carried out to their property.

Louth County Council staff and authorised contractors will always carry official identification and will present it when requested.

Members of the public should be aware that Louth County Council does not carry out energy upgrades, surveys, or maintenance works in privately owned homes.

If a person calls to your home claiming to be working for or on behalf of Louth County Council: Ask to see official identification.

Do not allow anyone into your home unless you are satisfied as to their identity and purpose.

If you have any concerns about who is at your door, contact Louth County Council directly on 042 933 5457 to verify their identity.

If safe to do so, make a note of vehicle registration numbers and any other identifying details.

Louth County Council is asking residents to share this information with family members, neighbours and friends, particularly older people and those who may be more vulnerable to scams.

Anyone who suspects suspicious activity should contact An Garda Síochána or Louth County Council immediately.

Eight-month closure on road off N53 DRIVERS who use the L-7120 at Annaghvacky face an eightmonth closure from Monday, 24 August, as work continues on the N53 Hackballscross to Rassan realignment scheme.

According to Louth County Council, the road, which connects the N53 Dundalk to Castleblayney Road at Annaghvacky with the L-7121, will be closed to vehicles and pedestrians until Friday, 23 April, 2027.

Local and emergency access will

be maintained.

Motorists will be diverted via the N53 to Hackballscross using the L-3125, L-3122, L-8650 and L-4630 to the L-7120 with the same route operating in the opposite direction.

The closure will facilitate major road works including construction of a new T-junction road re-alignment and connect the L-7120 to the new realigned N53 and is one part of a 3.3km realignment running from Car-

rickastuck near Hackballscross, through Annaghvacky and Shanmullagh before joining the existing road again at Rassan.

Plans for the new stretch include a wider carriageway, hard shoulders and verges, junction improvements, a new link road and upgraded drainage.

The project, which is fully funded by Transport Infrastructure Ireland, began in May and is expected to take around 14 months.

Dundalk Young Irelands plans major upgrade at Páirc Éire Óg DUNDALK Young Irelands GFC has lodged plans for a major upgrade of its Hoey’s Lane grounds, including a new clubhouse building and a floodlit all-weather pitch.

The proposed twostorey building would be constructed north of the existing clubhouse at Páirc Éire Óg and would provide two dressing rooms, showers and toilets on the ground floor, with a meeting room

above. A new astro pitch, surrounded by netting and fencing, also forms part of the application, with the club saying it would allow year-round training and provide more playing opportunities for all its teams.

Other work proposed includes a walkway and new perimeter fencing around the main playing pitch, as well as a players’ shelter at the side of the field.

The existing training pitch would be reduced in size and four floodlights and poles would be fitted. Drainage and other site works are also included.

Young Irelands, which was founded in 1884, described the proposed redevelopment as “a significant investment in the future of our club” and said it would help meet the needs of its growing membership.

The application was lodged on 22 July and remains before Louth County Council, with a decision expected on 15 September.

McArdle retains Mickey Martin Cup LAST night saw the final league qualifier in the Northend Bar Summer Series Of Darts taking place with the Mickey Martin Cup being the next of the old local dart competitions being played for.

Mickey was involved with the local darts league and organising various local competitions and was also involved in Darts at a County level and a National level with the INDO. 47 players put their toe to the oche and were hoping to secure one of the few places still up for grabs @ Finals night where the Paddy Dixon Cup awaits the overall Series winner.

The draw, done by Mickeys grandson, Jay Michael Martin, threw a number of intriguing contests together, no more so than on board 4 were Simon Wykes, Callum McCrave, Conor Shevlin & Barney Keenan were all knocked out in the preliminary round.

The Final was a real ding-dong battle.

Kevin Casey, only 17 years and only after playing in his first competitive match the previous Saturday in the Tommy Dunn Cup wouldn’t have been on anyone’s shortlist to go well in the competition but his lack of experience was replaced by grit and

determination.

Conor won the first game and Kevin win the next, Conor went one up again before Kevin restored parity again, onto the decider and Conor would go on to seal the won but was made to work hard for his win by Kevin.

In winning the Mickey Martin Cup, Conor became the back to back winner of the Cup. Jay Michael Martin made the presentations on behalf of his family. Next up is the Brother Eccles Cup (for players aged 50 or over), on Thursday 20th August.

Ramparts River Walk to celebrate Dundalk’s river heritage during National Heritage Week

FRIENDS of the Earth Dundalk is delighted to host a walk along the Ramparts River as part of National Heritage Week 2026.

This year’s theme, “Heritage at Risk,” highlights the importance of recognising and protecting places that are under threat. The Ramparts River has been one of our projects since we set up in 2024, and believe the river has significant potential to become a valued community amenity in the heart of Dundalk if restored and maintained.

Starting at Ladywell Shrine on the Dublin Road, the walk will offer an opportunity for people

to reconnect with the Ramparts, share memories and stories, and reflect on its current condition and future. We hope that local knowledge, experiences and ideas shared on the day will help build a better understanding of the river’s heritage and inform future efforts to protect and celebrate it.

For generations, the Ramparts has been part of everyday life in Dundalk, with locals remembering children “fishing for pinikins” (small fish once found in the river), as well as walking, playing and spending time along its banks. Friends of the Earth

want to hear the stories and memories that capture the river’s place in our town’s heritage.

We will finish at St. Helena’s, where refreshments will be provided and there will be an opportunity to continue sharing stories and ideas.

This National Heritage Week initiative is supported through funding from the River Basin Management Services.

Knockbridge gears up for special 20th Anniversary Vintage Rally EXCITEMENT is building in Knockbridge as the countdown begins to one of the North East’s most popular family days out, the Knockbridge Vintage Rally and Working Day, taking place on Sunday, 23 August 2026.

The 2026 rally marks a significant milestone for Knockbridge Vintage Club as it celebrates its 20th anniversary. Since its foundation in 2006, the club has grown into one of the region’s best-loved community events, attracting visitors and exhibitors from across Ireland while raising valuable funds for local charities and community causes.

With a packed programme of entertainment, vintage displays and family activities planned, organisers are looking forward to making this year’s rally a memorable celebration of 20 years of Knockbridge Vintage Club.

Country music stars Claudia Buckley and Gavin Gribben will provide the live entertainment bringing a fantastic afternoon of country music to Knockbridge.

The rally’s extensive Children’s Fun Area will once again be a major attraction, with a fantastic range of activities to keep younger visitors entertained throughout the day.

Children can get creative with hands-on pottery and flower arranging workshops, enjoy puppet shows, take part in family yoga, and get building with The Brickx Club, along with lots more activities and entertainment planned throughout the day. For vintage enthusiasts, the rally will feature an impressive display of vintage tractors, cars, commercial vehicles, stationary engines and agricultural machinery, with exhibitors travelling from across Ireland to showcase their vehicles and equipment.

A special feature of this year’s rally will be a celebration of 80 years of Ferguson, marking eight decades since the introduction of the iconic Ferguson TE20 in 1946. A dedicated Ferguson display will form part of the anniversary celebrations, with owners invited to bring their Ferguson tractors along and be part of this special gathering in Knockbridge.

One of the highlights of the Knockbridge Rally each year is its live Working Area, where visitors can step back in time and see the machinery, skills and farming practices that were once part of everyday rural life. Vintage tractors and machinery will be put through their paces throughout the day, giving spectators a fascinating glimpse of how generations before us worked the land.

Traditional skills and crafts will also form an important part of the day, with craft stalls and demonstrations taking place throughout the rally field. Visitors can also enjoy a flower ar-
