Council officials have pledged to review the options for next year’s Blessings of the Graves in Dowdallshill following widespread criticism of the ceremony on Sunday afternoon.

Unlike previous years there was no sound system or PA set up for the ceremony with people asked to listen to the service on Dundalk FM via radio or smartphone.

Although it had been announced prior to the event that the service would be broadcast on the radio most people assumed this was in addition to the service being relayed over loudspeaker at the graveyard.

Many people left the graveyard in disgust before the ceremony ended due to being unable to hear the ceremony due to lack of headphones or the service reaching capacity meaning people couldn’t tune in.

Following the fiasco Cllr Maeve Yore said people who attended the ceremony were “badly let down" by the council”.

Probation Act

A man who had been in custody for over three weeks in relation to theft charges was given the benefit of the Probation Act when he pleaded guilty to the offence.

John Smith (25) of Villas 3, Muirhevnamor went into custody on June 26 as a result of a number of incidents.

They included the theft of €9 worth of food

from a shop in Greenacres on April 26 this year, along with alcohol from other shops on April 9 and May 5. He also faced a public order charge as a result of the incident on May 5.

Judge John Coughlan stated that he would apply the Probation Act given the fact that he had already been in custody.

Following the fiasco many councilors expressed their disappointment at how the ceremony was carried out including Maeve Yore who said those people that attended the ceremony were “badly let down by the council”.

“I have attended

the Blessings of the Graves for the last 51 years since my Daddy died - I was aware that Dundalk FM were covering this annual event but thought this would be in conjunction with the normal amplification provided. I - as a Councillor - was not consulted by council officials on this decision.

“I will be raising this at our monthly county meeting as it is totally unacceptable to me that this was not provided.

With the good weather comes more activities on the water and unfortunately that often leads to a busier time for the local coastguard service. Last Thursday Greenore Coast Guard Unit were called to rescue two yachts in Carlingford who had got into trouble on the Lough.

According to officer in charge James Larkin nobody was injured or harmed in any way during the incidents.

“Last Thursday evening (13th July) at approximately 18:22 we

were tasked by Dublin Coastguard Unit by request of Belfast Coast Guard Unit to rescue a vessel that lost steerage on the lough. It turned out to be a yacht with two people on board.

As we were towing the yacht back to safety we received a second call telling us that a second yacht had been spotted grounded near the lighthouse. It would be kind of unusual to get two calls at practically the same time but thankfully the man on board the sec-

ond yacht was also ok and we also brought him back to safety. Yachts can sometimes get in trouble due to their deep keels getting stuck in sand and that’s probably what happened here.

The disabled vessel was towed to harbour and the grounded vessel was refloated on the next tide. As always we would ask people to be particular careful at this time of year as activities on the water tend to be very popular during the summer.,” warned James.

“Following issues with the amplification at the Blessing of the Graves in 2016 Council Officials explored options to improve the service to those attending this annual event run by the Catholic Parishes

Community Education Service Grants Summer/Autumn 2017 Applications are now invited from community groups and voluntary organisations for support regarding the delivery of educational programmes under LMETB’s Community Education Programme.

In line with Government guidelines for usage of funding, priority will be given to courses/ programmes which aim to work with individuals and groups that experience particular and acute barriers to participation in adult learning, in particular those who wish to access learning locally, as a step to more active community involvement or certified learning. Dundalk Golf Club’s Caolan Rafferty’s super season continued last week in the North of Ireland Championship at Royal Portrush.

He won the silver medal for leading qualifier and then battled through four rounds of matchplay before losing in the semi-final to Irish international Colin Fairweather from Knock Golf Club.

The 24-year-old carded a bogey free, course record 65, on the newly redesigned Dunluce Links to lead home a field of 300, of whom 120 were plus handicappers, in the qualifying round.

He had posted a 68 in the first round over The Valley course and finished on 10 under par.

At risk of long spell in Mountjoy pended sentence at Dundalk District Court was warned not to appear before the court again as long as he lives or he would face a long spell in Mountjoy.

Judge John Coughlan issued the warning to Thomas McDonagh of 8 Cooley Park, Dundalk, after he pleaded guilty to

Jonny’s ready for charity cycle to Tralee

Dromiskin man Jonny McGailey is getting back on the bike this August with the aim of raising more money for charity following two successful years staging the event.

For the past couple of years Jonny and his friends have taken up the challenge of cycling from Dundalk to Tralee to raise money for the Alzheimer Society of Ireland, Make A Wish Foundation, Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association and Friends of A. The former Rose of Tralee escort along with his friends have raised a magnificent €35,000 in total and this year he is hoping to raise enough to smash through the €50000 barrier.

Town 2 Town is a 420km cycle (plus 10km charity run) which Jonny and his friends hope to complete in two days.

The group will leave Dundalk on Friday morning August 18 before stopping over in Moneygall where Jonny’s friend Henry Healy (Barack Obama’s distant cousin) hosts a charity night for the gang in Ollie’s Bar in

the town.

They will then get back on their bikes on Saturday morning where they will hope to complete their journey in time to make it to the Rose of Tralee festival on Saturday evening.

Tralee holds some fantastic memories for Jonny as he was named Escort of the Year during the 2013 Rose festival.

This year the money raised will be divided between three charities, Make a Wish, Donal Walsh’s Live Life charity and Friends of A. According to Jonny he was overwhelmed by the support his charity cycle received last year and hopes people can be similarly generous this time around.

“The support we received last year was amazing and hearing some of the stories coming back from the charities telling us how many great things they could do thanks to our donation made me want to try and do something similar this year again,” explained Jonny.

“We started with just six of us back in 2015 and that grew to just over 20 last year and

we’re hoping to have more again this year.

This year we will once Cyclists from last year’s event celebrate reaching Tralee again aim to land in Tralee, at the Rose of Tralee festival Saturday evening having completed the 420km trek, and on the third day we will run the 10km charity run to bring our total distance to 430km.

“We are incredibly grateful for the support we have received to date as this is no easy trek but with treble the numbers from last year and a third day of punishment, we hope people can donate generously and make it all worthwhile,” he added.

RNCE is seeking phone volunteers

Rape Crisis North East is offering you the opportunity to attend a Helpline Training Programme which will commence on Wednesday September 13 and finish on Friday October 19.

The training is free and in return, RCNE will ask you to commit to four hours of your time per week to provide telephone counselling support to survivors of rape and sexual violence.

The training will take place at Cherrywood Counselling Centre, Great Northern Distillery Offices, Rape Crisis North East, Carrick Road, and will involve 12 Day Workshops over the duration of the training (Wednesdays and Thursdays).

Junior Athletes from Dundalk’s Irish Martial Arts Academy excelled at this year’s KBI Irish National kickboxing Championships in April and have earned the right to represent their club and country when they travel to FYR Macedonia as part of Team Ireland at the European Championships 2017.

This coming September, the five young athletes ranging in age from eight to 16 years, Oisín Ó Maoileoin (Dundalk), Sarah Brookes (Carlingford), Max Lennon (Carlingford), Aaliyah Clarke (Dundalk) and Matthew McQuillan (Dundalk) will travel as members of Team Ireland to Skopje, FYR Macedonia to represent Ireland at the Wako Cadets and Junior European Kickboxing Championships.

This is a huge achievement for these kids two of whom, Oisín and Aaliyah are on the Irish Team for the first time. Sarah and Mathew were members of Team Ireland for the World Championships

Call to make respite care for people with disabilities a priority Sinn Féin President and Louth TD Gerry Adams met with Minister Finian McGrath as part of a delegation of Louth Oireachtas members to discuss the lack of dedicated respite care for people with disabilities in County Louth.

The Louth TD’s had jointly written to Minister Simon Harris urging him to take action on a proposal that is currently with the Government which if funded could go some way to providing some of the respite care so badly needed in the short term.

“I have been working consistently on this serious issue for

some time. My offices recently received harrowing accounts from parents in Louth,” added Mr Adams.

“While I welcome Minister McGrath’s commitment to pursue the matters raised at our meeting, immediate action is needed.

“Minister McGrath assured me that respite was one of his top Budget 2018 priorities so I am keen to ensure that the desperately needed services will be provided for. I will continue to work closely with Minister McGrath to explore all options open to us to support the stressed families in Louth,” he concluded.

Young footballers taking part in Youth World Cup

A selection of Dundalk schoolboy footballers are currently representing their town on the international stage as they take part in the Gothia Cup which is also known as the Youth World Cup. Gothia Cup is the world’s largest international youth football tournament with around 1600 teams from 80 nations taking part in the annual tournament which will host 4500 games on 110 fields in Gothenberg, Sweden.

The tournament was first held in 1975 and has grown each year to the stage where it is now recognised as the world’s premier youth football competition.

Through the years, almost a million players from a total of 141 countries have participated in the tournament.

Brian McGuinness is the manager of the Dundalk Schoolboy’s Under 16 side who have travelled to Gothenburg and he insists that the tournament is a fantastic competition for the young players as it

helps them build confidence as well as strong team bonds.

“We’ve travelled to the tournament seven or eight times before and it has always been a fantastically run tournament. It’s a great learning curve for the young boys and it gives them confidence and shows them what it is like to live in another city for a week as well as showing them the meaning of teamwork as they fight for each other in the pitch.

“You get a chance to play against teams from all over the world.

I remember a couple of years ago we beat a team from Brazil on our way to the B Final which is a fantastic achievement for a group of lads from Dundalk.

This time around we are in a group with teams from Tunisia, Norway and Sweden and we can’t wait to get going.

We’ve always given a good account of ourselves in Sweden and I’m sure this year will be no different,” stated Brian.

Brian and his team travelled to Gothenburg last weekend and

played their first match on Monday where they were unfortunately edged out by Tunisian side Specificique FA 2-1. According to manager Brian McGuinness his side were unfortunate to lose their opening game having put in a very good performance.

“We lost 2-1 today in our opening group game with Specificique FA from Tunisia. We dominated the majority of possession throughout the game but conceded a soft goal midway through the first half. Kevin McCormack (Redeemer) equalised after the break after good play from Fintan Brady (St.Dominics).

Warned to stop begging or face return to Romania A woman who pleaded guilty to a begging offence was warned that if she repeated the offence she would be sent to jail and face the possibility of being sent back to Romania.

Maria Rostas (40) of 49 Park St, Dundalk, pleaded guilty to the offences of harassing and intimidat-

ing and obstructing members of the public on Clanbrassil St on June 20 and March 15 this year but escaped a conviction after agreeing to pay €100 to charity.

Judge John Coughlan told the defendant that every time she appeared he would take €100 off her and that would quickly add up

to €1,000.

Insp Martin Beggy stated that the Gardai didn’t approve of her activities and asked that she be advised of her behaviour.

“If she begs again in Dundalk I will give her 28 days and I will also recommend that she is sent back to Romania,” the judge warned.

Aaron sets new course record at Dundalk GC Aaron Grant set a new course record on his way to winning the Club Championship on Saturday.

The plus one handicapper shot a bogey free eight under par 64 in the first round of the 36 hole event and a level par second round saw him finish on eight under and five shots ahead of Caolan Rafferty.

Grant and Rafferty will now turn their attentions to this week’s Barton Shield Leinster Finals in Kilkenny as the club bids for its first provincial pennant in this inter-club competition for elite golfers.

Eoin Murphy, Josh Mackin and Richie Newell are the other players who have featured on the journey to this stage and managers Alan McCabe and John Conlon were interested spectators as Saturday’s Club Championship unfolded.

Dundalk will face Portmanrock in Friday’s quarter-final with the semi-final scheduled for the afternoon and the final taking place on Saturday.

Richard Barry won the Arkew Cup on Sunday. The 11 handicapper was the only player in the 180 strong field to break 70 on a day when the course clearly showed just how tough it has become following the recent improvements.

Neal MacKell took second overall on countback with a nett 70 after the four handicapper shot a 74, which was the best

Dundalk are through to the Leinster Final of the Fred Daly Trophy after an superb win over a Carton House team that contained newly crowned Ulster Boys Champion Jack Doherty. Drawn away, Dundalk dispatched Eoin Murphy, Josh Mackin and Padraig Fallon to the Kildare venue while Sean Laverty and Kyle Rafferty were handed responsibility for the home leg.

The Louth Minor squad that lost out to Dublin in the Leinster Final on Sunday

No fairytale ending for Louth There was no fairytale ending for Louth’s Minor footballers as they lost out to Dublin in the Leinster Championship Final on Sunday afternoon.

The Wee County travelled to Croke Park after qualifying for a first final in 46 years but their dreams were dashed by a slick Dublin side that eventually came out on top by 2-19 to 0-12.

Cheered on by a large crowd in red-and-white, Wayne Kierans’ team couldn’t be faulted for the honesty of their effort but in the end it wasn’t enough to claim the title for the first time since 1953.

Unfortunately it was a poor start that proved Louth’s downfall as they conceded two goals inside a minute to trail by eight points inside the opening ten minutes.

After that it was always going

to be an uphill task for the young players, but they battled all the way to the end.

John Gallagher and Ciaran Keenan led the way in terms of scoring, while at the other end goalkeeper Alan McGauley made a couple of good saves before being forced off through injury.

His replacement, Adam Molly was also called into action to prevent the Dubs getting further goals.

Leonard Grey, Liam Jackson and James O’Reilly also deserve credit for the manner in which they continued to try to take the game to Dublin.

Having trailed by 2-11 to 0-5 at half time, Louth turned in a brave performance in the second half but unfortunately it wasn’t enough to claw back the deficit.

The good news for the Wee County is that they are still in the All-Ireland Championship and will take on Kerry in the quarterfinal.

Dundalk still have it all to play for in Europe

DUNDALK FC are just 90 minutes away from a dream tie against Celtic in the Champions League.

The Lilywhite take on Norwegian champions, Rosenborg, tonight (Wednesday) knowing that victory will see them take on Celtic if, as expected, the Scottish giants overcome Linfield.

Dundalk drew 1-1 with Rosenborg in the first leg.

Stephen Kenny had asked his side to play without fear prior to kick-off and his team took that advice on board early on as they dominated the opening quarter of an hour with Robbie Benson and Michael Duffy both going close to given Dundalk a lead early on.

“I only established ‘From the Top’ theatre school last year so it was nice to be asked to take part in this two -week summer camp in the Arts Centre. The response has been really good and we have some very talented young children here.

“We are doing all sorts of stuff each day during the summer camp including singing, dancing, acting and arts and crafts. We have two separate camps going on over the two weeks with one for children aged between 6 and 18 and one for tots aged

between 3 and 5. At the end of each week the tots will take to the stage to put on a performance for their parents. We had our first performance today and it went down really well. The older kids are currently working very hard on stage as they will be performing Rydell High: The Musical (Grease is the Word) next Saturday at 4pm,” stated Geraldine.

The children’s performance of Rydell High: The Musical is open to all and will be performed on stage this Saturday in An Táin Arts Centre.

Warrenpoint Harbour waste plant proposal scrapped Sinn Féin President and TD for Louth Gerry Adams has welcomed news that the proposal to construct a waste treatment plant at Warrenpoint Harbour has been scrapped.

Teachta Adams said: “Concerns have been raised with Sinn Féin representatives who represent both sides of Carlingford Lough, about the potential environmental

impact of a proposal to construct a hazardous waste treatment facility in Warrenpoint.

“Our local Councillors on both sides of the Lough, and concerned local campaign groups had also raised similar concerns and in particular the understandable fears around Carlingford Lough as a tourist destination.

“My colleague Chris Hazzard, MP for South Down, raised these

concerns directly with the waste company behind the proposal Re-Gen in recent weeks.

“I also wrote to the company, the Warrenpoint Harbour Authority, the two Councils that border Carlingford Lough, and to the respective government departments on both sides of the border asking that the fullest information is made available to local communities.

“I have now been told by my colleague Chris Hazzard that the board of the Warrenpoint Harbour Authority have decided not to proceed with plans to site the waste plant within the harbour estate.

“This is a welcome decision but vigilance is needed to ensure that this proposal doesn’t emerge at another location along Carlingford Lough.”

Banned for being drunk in charge

A man who came to the attention of Gardai ewhile sitting in his car eeating a curry was ebanned from the road for four years after he dwas convicted of being drunk in charge.

Patrick McArdle r -

of 53 Forest Park, Dromintee, was also given a ten-year ban for driving without insurance.

The court heard that Gardai observed the 48-year-old defendant in his car at

a filling station on the Newry Road.

The lights were on and the engine was running, and he was finishing a curry.

He was arrested and taken to Dundalk Garda Station where

he refused to provide a sample.

Insp Martin Beggy revealed that Mr McArdle had previously been banned for six years in 2014 for an offence dating back to 2005.

After two hours of

intense sparring under the watchful eye of the National Instructor, and Brazilian native, Sebastiao Torres, three members of the team were promoted to the coveted rank

of Blue Belt, including Barry Callan, Darren Mackin, and Kyle Keating, thereby bringing the tally of Blue Belts at the Dundalk Club to a very impressive ten.

The BJJ grading system is very conservative with it taking an average of 12 years training three times per week to attain the rank of Black-belt.

Battle continues for snooker league play-offs The action moved to Monday night in the Peadar Callan Summer Snooker League from its usual Wednesday night slot due to Dundalk playing in the Champions League.

In the first match Alan Thompson’s men took on Mickey Ralph’s team and it was Thompson’s men who came out on top with a 3-1 victory. Overall it was a great team performance and special mention to Ciaran McShane who was on fire on the night.

In match 2 it was the battle of the O’Hanlons with Stephen’s men taking on Brendan’s team. In the end it was Stephen’s team who stretched thir lead at the top of the table with some fine snooker from Steve McBride and Stephen O’Hanlon himself.

In the final match of the night it was a six-pointer between two sides battling for the final fourth spot and a place in the playoffs. It was Paddy Hayes’ men who came through beating Justin McArdle’s side 3-1. Peter O’Hagan put Paddy’s men 1-0 up only for Aaron Callan to level. Justin McArdle needed pink and black to put his team 2-1 up and after potting a screamer of a pink the crowd were stunned when he missed a simple black to the middle his opponent took no mercy as David Moran came in to put Paddy’s men 2-1 up. The last doubles match also saw Paddy’s men win to record a fine 3-1 win.

With only two weeks of the regular season remaining the chase for a top four spot is hotting up to say the least.

Man pleads guilty to possession of cocaine

A man who admitted possession of cocaine was told that the only reason he avoided a jail sentence was that he entered a plea of guilty.

Anthony Quigley of 6 Nicholas St, Dundalk, admitted having €50 worth of the drug

on October 8 last year.

The 26-yearold defendant had three previous convictions, but none for drugs, and solicitor Eleanor Kelly stated that the father of two had battled cancer and recently been given the all-clear. She asked

Judge John Coughlan to consider a donation to charity.

However, the judge stated that for cocaine the punishment is jail. He imposed a five-month sentence that he suspended on account of the guilty plea.

Failed to have drink drive charge dismissed A man who failed to have a drug driving charge dismissed at Dundalk District Court was disqualified from driving for four years.

David Kazmierski of 80 Rockfield Close, Ardee, argued that the Garda failed to use a roadside impairment test to help him form an opinion that he defendant was driving while under the influence.

However, Judge John Coughlan rejected the argument and stated that the Garda had explained how he formed his opinion and that the roadside tests were not compulsory, but merely an aid to Gardai.

The court heard that at 11.40pm

on May 17 at Ballinlough, Knockbridge, the 36-year-old defendant was observed approaching a checkpoint slowly, and pulled in just before the point where Gardai were stopping cars.

The investigating officer spoke to the driver and noticed a strong smell of cannabis, while his speech was slurred. Mr Kazmierski was taken to Dundalk Garda Station but because a doctor was unavailable he had to be taken to Drogheda. A urine sample illustrated that there was cannabis in his system.

The defence barrister stated that Gardai were required to perform a roadside test and that

without this there was no way a Garda could have formed his opinion.

Insp Martin Beggy stated that the tests were an aid for Gardai and not an obligation. Judge Coughlan pointed out that the Garda had given evidence of how he formed his opinion and everything else in the case led from that as he convicted.

The barrister stated that the defendant had no previous convictions and required his licence for his job.

Judge Coughlan imposed a four year disqualification, which he postponed until January 1next, along with a €250 fine.

Nine previous no insurance convictions

A man who had nine previous convictions for no insurance was told that his record was not good enough as he was sentenced to five months in prison.

Thomas Maguire of 37 Maple Close, Avenue Rd, Dundalk, pleaded guilty to having no insurance and no licence on the Long Avenue, on February 24, 2016.

The case had been heard the

previous week and a bench warrant issued for sentence after he failed to appear.

Solicitor, Eleanor Kelly (28), stated that her client was a young man who was battling drug addiction. He had been in and out of custody and was released in January 2016.

Although he still had a slight addiction to cannabis, he was off

heroin and methadone, and she asked that the case be put back for a review.

Judge John Coughlan declined the request and stated that having nine previous convictions was not good enough as he imposed the five month sentence and tenyear disqualification.

The judge fixed recognisances in the event of an appeal.

Swearing at Gardai proved very costly A man who admitted being abusive to Gardai was told to pay €500 to charity on July 26 in order to avoid a conviction.

Gerard Rogan of Crescent One, Muirhevnamor Told Gardai twice to ‘f*** off’ and was told by Judge John Coughlan he was fortunate he didn’t say it more.

“It was a very expensive ‘f*** off’ so it is just as well you didn’t say it ten times,”

he stated.

The court heard that Gardai were seizing a vehicle that Mr Leonard owned on February 22 this year at the Dublin Rd when he told the Garda to ‘f*** off’. When a Garda asked him to desist he stood close to his face and said it again.

Solicitor, Conor MacGuill stated that his 35-year-old client was complying with a direction to leave the area when

his car was being seized, when it was alleged that he made the remarks. He added that the defendant did not intend to cause offence and while there is a difference of opinion, he apologises if he was rude.

Judge Coughlan stated that he would accept €500 towards charity and when Mr Leonard paid €100 he adjourned the case to July 26 for the remainder of the money to be paid.

CúChulainn Archers bring home the medals

Authors Theatre Organisation (ATO) from Moscow, Russia and Dundalk’s MAD Youth Theatre (MADYT) came together for an eight day residential youth exchange in Carlingford last week.

The two groups who have previously met before at a Youth Theatre Festival in Prague, Czech Republic in February 2016. Themed ‘Building Bonds Through Storytelling’ This project aimed to bring two different countries together to share their commonality and build an understanding of their differences.

They exchanged and share the ways they do theatre, they explored each other’s folklores and stories.

This was done through the process of drama and the exploration of the English Language and the participants then also engaged in the outdoor activities Carlingford Adventure centre had to offer.

The two groups exchanged stories, MADYT gave the legendary tale of ‘Táin’ and ATO gave the popular Russian tale of ‘The Frog Princess’ .

They then took these stories and created a short performance as part of result of the learning process.

MAD YT exchanged ideas with Russian group The groups where fascinated by these stories, ATO members where intrigued on how the Táin was tied into the heritage, culture and geography of Ireland and blown away by the magic and grandest of the Queen Meave and Warrior

Cuchuliáinn. The Frog Princess sparked curiosity and has all the ingredients for an epic tale of good versus evil and fighting for true love. The project was shared to a full venue at the Spirit Store and a stunning performance.

CúChulainn Archers turned up in force for the Blackheath Archers Shoot in the walled garden in Drewstown House in Co Meath. The event is a real demonstration of accuracy, with a total of 144 arrows being shot at various distances - 90 metres down to 30metres.

CúChulainn’s Senior Men had a clean sweep in the compound category, with Éamonn Rogers taking Gold, Fiachra Judge taking Silver and John Dollard taking Bronze.

Michelle Williams took the Bronze in Senior Recurve missing out on the Silver by just two points, Brandon Dollard took the Gold in Recurve Cadet men, while the Senior Women compound saw Adria Quinn take Silver and Christina O’Sullivan Bronze with Christy Banks taking Gold in the Short Metric.

Meanwhile in Italy, James Moloney was representing Ireland at the World Bow Hunters Tournament in Florence, where he placed in the top end of the field, in 32nd place.

The Irish Open Championships 2017 and the Team Championships was hosted by City of Belfast Archers at the Malone Rd Rugby grounds in Belfast.

CúChulainn Archers had three teams competing, with the newest members of the club in the C team. This team also comprised of a mixed bow style, with two female compound (Christina O’Sullivan and Ann Marie Murray) and one male recurve (Brandon Dollard). Unfortunately they came up against the more experienced team of compound archers, CúChulainn’s B team (John Keenan, Christy Banks and Deirdre Rogers).

The C team went on to beat the B team in spectacular fashion.

Unfortunately, their ‘prize’ for this was to meet the CúChulainn A team (Éamonn Rogers, Rachael McComb and Adria Quinn) in the next round, who put paid to their ambition. CúChulainn A went on to take the Bronze medal.

Student Union President meets local politicians to discuss upcoming Budget DKIT Student Union President Pauraic Renaghan and Vice President Aaron Geagan have been busy over the past month meeting with local representatives to put forward budget proposals from the Union of Students in Ireland (USI).

The pair met up with Local TDs Peter Fitzpatrick, Declan Breathnach and Gerry Adams as well as Senator Ged Nash to discuss their concerns in relation to Dundalk IT. According to Pauraic the talks with the local representatives were positive and he is hopeful that

they took his concerns on board.

“Over the past month we have met with our local representatives up in Leinster House and I have to say we were happy with how the talks went. They seemed to take everything we said on board and gave us commitments that they would do everything in their power to help us out. Among our proposals was a reduction of €250 in student fees which we think is fair enough given that they have risen by 60% over the last ten years.

In general fees are about €3000 for each student

currently which we think is too much.

“We also highlighted the issue of needing more funding to employ more counsellors in the college. It is accepted that colleges need one counsellor for every 1000 students to help facilitate those who need help and currently we have just two counsellors for roughly 5000 students.

“Last year we were forced to use some of our funds raised from rag week towards employing a part time counsellor to help ease the burden on waiting times. Mental health is a

huge issue amongst students today and an extra counsellor in the college would make a very big difference to us.

“We were also very happy to hear Ged Nash speak about Labour’s proposal to reject income contingent student loans. These loans are regressive and end up saddling the student with debt and discouraging many from entering third level. The USI reject proposals for a contingency based student loan scheme and we are happy that Labour have put forward this proposal,” stated Pauraic.
