A young girl from Tallanstown has been honoured with a bravery award after calmly relaying information to ambulance control as her father was having a stroke. Twelve-year old Lauren Brennan was accompanied by her parents John and Claire as she received her bravery award at the National Emergency Operations Centre in Tallaght last week.

Lauren was only nine years old when the incident occurred in 2016 and according to her dad John who was born with a genetic

heart condition she showed remarkable calmness and coolness when on the phone to the emergency services, as John recalled.

“It was a lovely day so myself, my wife Claire, my daughter Lauren, my son Shaun, a neighbour’s child and our dog decided to go to the park in Tallanstown. When we got there myself and Claire started a treasure hunt for the kids and everything was going grand. Dundalk to play FC Riga in Champions League

Dundalk will play Latvian champions Riga FC in the first round of Champions League qualifying. The draw was made yesterday afternoon in Nyon, Switzerland and the Lilywhites will be at home in the first leg on either the 9th or 10th of July. The second leg will take place in Latvia a week later on either the 16th or 17th of July.

Given that there are direct flights to Riga it is expected that the ever loyal Lilywhite army will travel in big numbers to watch the latest instalment of Dundalk’s European adventures.

This will be Riga’s first foray into the Champions League with the club only founded in 2014.

Last year they were defeated in the first qualifying round of the Europa Cup by CSKA Sofia on away goals but later went on to win their first ever Latvian title in a double winning season. They are currently leading the Latvian Higher League on goal difference after 14 games.

This is the first year Dundalk have entered the first round as seeded team. There are four rounds in total to progress through to get to the group phase and should Dundalk lose at any stage there European adventures will continue in the Europa League.

The winner of the tie will be guaranteed a third round Europa League qualifer, while the loser will go into the second round. Dundalk will find out their potential second round opponents today when another draw is due to take place.

Matches will be played on 9/10 and 16/17 July.

Delay criticised

Fianna Fáil TD for Louth and Spokesperson on North-South Bodies & Cross Border Cooperation, Declan Breathnach, has said the problems with the cross-border initiative are a double insult for those who are forced to travel across the border for routine procedures which should be available here.

He explained, “The lengthy backlogs, which are leading to reimbursement delays for patients needs to be tackled. At present there are 4,000 applications still being processed with patients waiting months for what should be a reasonably quick turnaround.

“The Cross-Border Directive offers people languishing on waiting lists an opportunity to avail of some health services in another European country.

They can then recoup costs from the HSE,” he stated.

that the whole left side of my face had started to droop down and I was unable to speak.

“She called her mam over straight away who put me in the recovery position on the ground.

Claire was attending me and the kids who were understandably upset so it was left to Lauren to call 999 and relay all the information and gather all the instructions from

ambulance control.

“Although I couldn’t speak I was aware of my surroundings and I could see Lauren calmly speak to the ambulance control and relay all the information to Claire for about 15 minutes.

She then gave them perfect directions to get to the park and within minutes I was in the ambulance and brought to hospital.

“I have to say I was very proud of her and how calm and cool she

remained during the whole incident. I’m 38 and I don’t think I would have handled myself as well if the roles were reversed.

I’ve had a genetic heart condition since birth which had been deteriorating during the couple of years before the stroke.

“Last year it was functioning at about eight percent but then I finally got the call in September just gone to go in for a heart

transplant. I spent four months in hospital away from my family while recovering but thankfully today I am nearly back to my best and almost ready to get back working.

Woman attacked while walking

A woman in her early 20s was seriously assaulted when she was going for a walk and a man approached her from behind and assaulted her. The man left the area on foot and made his way out of Táin walk and headed north on to the Inner Relief Road (N52).

The suspect is a male in his 20s and was wearing a grey tracksuit top and bottoms. He has a tight haircut, with fair hair, is around 6’2” and has a tanned complexion. Gardaí say that they are currently awaiting completion of an evofit image to help in the search for the man.

The man left the area on foot and made his was out of Táin walk and headed north on to the Inner Relief Road (N52).

Gardaí are appealing for any person who witnessed the incident or with any information to contact them at Dundalk Garda station on 042 - 9388400, the Garda Confidential Line 1800 666 111. Gardaí are further seeking any drivers of vehicles or cyclists with dash cam footage who were in the Newry Road or the Inner Relief road at the Táin Bridge area at this time to check their dash cams footage and contact Dundalk Garda station.

Inaugural Paddy Cheshire 5K run The inaugural Paddy Cheshire Memorial 5km will take place on Saturday June 29 at 7pm. The race will start from Old St.Brigid’s School on the Point Road and the course will encompass most of the picturesque Quay area of Dundalk, finishing on the iconic Navvy Bank. The course is almost totally flat leading to opportunities for personal bests for everyone from beginner to experienced racer.

All finishers will receive a medal that has been generously sponsored

Fun day out for Dundalk Special Olympics Club Dundalk Special Olympics club was invited to Cloghogue Pitch and Putt to spend a fun day at their wonderful venue. Approaching the end of their year, the athletes were delighted to swap usual athletics training for some Pitch and Putt and off they went to Newry on Saturday June 8.

Before hitting the course, all received a demonstration of the skills, safety and eti-

quette of Pitch and Putt from Conor and his colleagues. Soon after, the athletes had the opportunity to test their skills on the amazing course.

To end a wonderful day out, the athletes were treated with a delicious lunch at The Lisdoo restaurant down Old Newry Road, Dundalk.

Dundalk Special Olympics club will close for the Summer on June 29 and be back at Blackrock Community Cen-

tre on September 7.

Ailish McArdle, chairperson, wants to thank the Dundalk and Blackrock communities for their continued support throughout the year and a special thanks to Cloghogue Pitch and Putt for a lovely day out.

Ardee CS students pictured at Hunterstown Rovers GFC

Art students make a stand for a local football club Earlier this year, Hunterstown Rovers football club completed the building of their new stand, which has been a huge undertaking for all involved. While it has no doubt been an enormous addition to the club, there has been a certain something missing from it.

The art teachers at Ardee Community School approached the club to see if they would be interested in allowing the artistic talents of their 5th Year art students loose on the outer wall which faces the main Ardee - Dublin Road.

This partnership provided a benefit to both parties, the club would get to spruce up the new but rather dull concrete wall and the skills and creativity of the local students would get to be seen and appreciated by all commuters on the busy road.

Once given the green light, months of planning, designing and creative painting followed.

After many long hours in class, lunchtime catch-ups and after school sessions the boards were finally complete.

With the help of Sean McClean, Michael O’Brien and two

willing volunteers from the O’Brien family, the boards (under the watchful eye of both art teachers from Ardee) officially hit the main stage on Saturday May 11.

The lifeless greys of the concrete stand have now been transformed with the vibrant and imaginative paintings of a talented group of local students.

The hard work, dedication and skills of all involved can clearly be seen in the energetic brush strokes, striking colours and imaginative compositions of the GAA inspired boards.

in Brief Lithuanian Community Celebrate

The Louth Lithuanian community will be celebrating Midsummer’s Day with a family fun Fair to be held at Dundalk Racecourse from 11 am on June 22.

This is an event for everybody to come along to and have a nice family day out. The Lithuanian community have extended an open invitation for anybody to come along and enjoy their traditions.

Activities will include storytelling, barbecues, searching for the magic fern blossom, greeting the rising midsummer sun and washing the face with the morning dew. There will be lots of games for children.

After the activities in Dundalk Stadium the party will continue in the Imperial Hotel where organisers have booked a concert with Andrius Mamontovas a former Eurovision Song Contest entrant for Lithuania.

Chamber host Eures briefing for cross-border workers and employers Dundalk Chamber of Commerce in association with Eures Cross Border Partnership held a very successful Breakfast Briefing on Tax Rules for Cross Border workers and Employers in the Ballymascanlon Hotel on Wednesday June 12 in the Ballymascanlon Hotel. Guest speaker was Rose Tierney of Tierney Tax Consultancy and Orla Rafferty of Orla Rafferty Ltd. The event was a huge success with over 100 delegates in attendance. The speaker covered such topics as redundancy payments, pensions lump sums, tax relief on pension contributions and tax requirements for

the cross- border worker. Their speeches covered the implications for employers who employ cross border workers. In her speech Rose covered the implications for employers with staff members who work in both jurisictions and social insurance benefits and pensions in a cross- border situation. There were questions from the floor and the speakers were experts in their fields.

Pat McCormick President Dundalk Chamber was delighted with the attendance and stated that Rose’s and Orla’s speeches were very detailed and helped to answer some of the queries faced by Cross Bor-

Paul O’Hare was the winner of Lady Captain Criona O’Reilly’s Prize to Men on Sunday when he shot 69 for the only sub-70 round of the day.

He pipped last year’s Golfer of the Year Clem Walshe (5) by one shot on a day when the course off the blue tees proved long and difficult for most of the 197 players who took part.

The 28 handicapper took full advantage of the holes where he had two shots particularly the first, seventh, eighth, 11th and 18th where he had nett birdies while parring three of the four par three holes was another major factor in his victory. O’Hare went out in 32 nett and returned in 37 nett for his three part total of 69.

Busy night for local emergency services Emergency services were called to Carlingford on Saturday evening following an incident at Carlingford marina were a man lost his footing and fell of a small cliff.

Greenore Coast Guard, Local Fire Brigade, local Garda and Ambulance services were all involved in the rescue of the man who was later brought to Daisy Hill hospital in Newry where he received treatment.

According to George Campbell who is the officer in charge at the Greenore Coast Guard Unit the incident occurred at approximately 10pm on Saturday evening in Carlingford.

“We received a call late on Saturday evening at about 10pm when we received word that a member of the public had falling from a height above the beach after losing his footing and falling through bushes at the

side of the footpath. The Greenore Coast Guard boat was also launched to aid in the rescue.

“The casualty was removed to Daisy Hill Hospital in Newry where he received treatment.

Greenore Coast Guard were tasked again at 2.00am to search for a missing person along with local Garda. Thankfully the person was located uninjured and teams returned to base,” stated George.

Sinn Féin Councillor Antóin Watters has welcomed the latest move on tackling the ‘scourge’ of boy racers in the North Louth area.

Cllr Watters highlighted the issue once again when it reared its head over the Christmas period.

“I received calls from concerned residents of the Feede and Blackgate area of Ravensdale about individuals who

were using the quiet period on the roads to drive excessively and dangerously in the area and then up to Carrickarnon, turn around and back to Ravensdale again. I worked closely with my colleague Cllr Liz Kimmons in the South Armagh area and welcome the operation that took place on Thursday last.”

Cllr Watters explained “a

joint operation between the PSNI and Gardaí was mounted along the old Dublin Road in Carrickarnon which straddles the border. Residents in the Carrickarnon, Edentubber and Feede areas have been under siege and have had enough and warmly welcome this new co-operation.

“I have spoken to a number of local residents and they are delighted something is finally

been done as it has gone on for far too long and they are sick of having their daily lives disrupted by this dangerous, selfish and reckless behaviour.”

Going forward Cllr Watters has promised to “continue to push to ensure this operation continues on a regular basis and let people get back to living their lives in peace.”

Criticism of home help restrictions

Sinn Féin Louth TD Gerry Adams has described the decision by the HSE to restrict new applications for Home Help and Home Support Hours as “deeply regressive and hurtful to the many families and carers who are dependent upon this crucial service.”

The HSE has confirmed that it has closed the applications for Home Helps hours and will reduce Home Support hours until next November despite there being more than 6,000 people on the waiting lists.

Teachta Adams said: “This week is National Carers Week. It is the 13th week of this annual event

which highlights the critical contribution carers make to people’s lives, families and to their communities.

“Research published this week by Care Alliance Ireland, in partnership with the eleven other Carers Week partner groups, reveals that many family carers continue to be unable to leave their own home and depend heavily on online supports for information, support and social connection. This affects many families in Louth,” he continued.

He added that this difficult situation will be exacerbated by the decision of the HSE to stop the allocation of home help hours,

and home support hours, to new applicants until November at a time when more than six thousand people, including citizens in Louth, are waiting for access to home care supports.

“The impact of this on individuals, especially the elderly and disabled, and their families will be significant. It also will have a serious knock-on effect on the availability of beds for new patients in hospitals.

“Patients who could otherwise be cared for at home but cannot be discharged because of the lack of home help supports,” added Mr Adams.

EU renewable energy targets and deadlines formed a key part of discussion.

Energy innovation in the NorthEast was a core focus of the event as Martin McVicar, Founder of Combilift, and Jonathan Jennings of Glen Dimplex showcased the technologies and solutions being

developed and delivered locally to support Ireland’s continued transition to a low carbon energy future.

Eamon Dillane also presented a case study on energy innovation in the home and showcased how solar energy and electric vehicles has transformed his energy consumption behaviour and way of life.

The Dance Kids present ‘Here Comes Summer’ An Táin Arts Centre is the place to be on Sunday June 23 when the Dance Kids unveil their latest show ‘Here Comes Summer’.

Never one’s to sit still; the Dance Kids have been rehearsing for ‘Here Comes Summer’ since January and have promised that this year’s show will be the perfect event for all the family, with performances to suit all ages.

The talented dancers aged from just four years of age are promising to stage a ‘show-stopping performance’ of the hit Disney film, ‘Hercules’, as well as many favourites from ‘The Monkees’ and ‘Legally Blonde’.

The night of entertainment will also include hit songs from ‘The Sound of Music’ and ‘Spice Girls’ to name just a few. If that wasn’t enough, An Táin Arts Centre will be

transported back to 19th Century France when the cast of Les Misérables take to the stage performing the most popular songs from the classic musical.

Over the weekend of June 21 and 22, as the sun shines longest on our northern hemisphere, new music will burst forth in Dundalk. The midsummer sun brings some of the most exciting composers and outstanding musicians from around the world to the town of Dundalk for this year’s Louth Contemporary Music Society’s festival of new music.

This year, in the image of a ritual journey, Stations of the Sun will follow the solar cycle in a sequence of five unique concerts in different innovative venues across the town.

Festival Director Eamonn Quinn stated ‘It is our mission to bring the most renowned contemporary musicians, performers and composers to Ireland. This year we are particularly proud to showcase ground breaking women composers and musicians from across the globe.’

This year’s programme begins and ends with music by renowned Finnish composer Kaija Saariaho, making her first visit to Ireland. Internationally esteemed for her sonic imagination and expressive power, Saariaho works with contemporary digital means and ancient scales to create dreamlike music, loaded with a strong feeling for nature and with primal human emotion. In Dundalk, vocal and instrumental pieces from throughout her career will be performed by musicians with whom she collaborates closely.

Stations of the Sun is also proud to present a new work by the Hungarian composer György Kurtág, who, at the age of 92, has recently been acclaimed worldwide for his first opera, setting Samuel Beckett’s Endgame. There will also be a performance of Kurtág’s Bach-inspired HiPar-

tita for solo violin, given by the musician for whom it was written: the extraordinary Hiromi Kikuchi.

Music by three diverse composers will follow in the atmospheric and resonant space of the old Dundalk Gaol. Linda Caitlin Smith’s new work comes out of North American minimalism, carrying a care for detail that is uniquely hers and intensely telling. Peter Garland, coming from something of the same background but going very much his own way, arrives with a new piece for string quartet and tenor voice.

Pascale Criton uses special tunings to explore very small intervals in music that is mesmerising.

Also to be heard for the first time in Ireland are the sonorous voices of the Moscow Russian Patriarchate Choir, in new pieces and venerable chants.

Celebration of indoor football leagues

The County Museum Dundalk with Drogheda Local Voices has organised an afternoon of football reminiscences to be held at the Museum on Thursday June 20 at 2pm.

The event is to remember the men’s and women’s indoor football leagues of the late 1960s.

At the time indoor football was very popular with GAA players, who managed to avoid the ban on foreign sports as it was seen as entertainment and not soccer.

Women were encouraged to play indoor football and this was the

start of the contemporary women’s soccer and Gaelic football. This took place during a time of social change in Ireland, the league represented a modern mentality as Ireland was about to begin significant change.

Indoor football was one of the most popular forms of entertainment in the late 1960s with teams travelling long distances to compete and huge crowds gathering to view the matches.

Helena Byrne, from Drogheda Local Voices, first documented the history of the Abbey Ballroom

Indoor Football Leagues.

Recently she has uncovered information about similar competitions that ran in the Adelphi Ballroom in Dundalk as part of the May Time Festival, the Embassy Ballroom in Castleblayney, the Skating Rink in Blackrock and the Parochial Hall in Inniskeen.

According to Helena Byrne this is an aspect of the county’s history that is as yet unwritten.

“Thursday’s event will hopefully be of interest to people who either, played or attended those competitions.

“We’d love if they could come along to the event and share their stories.

“You have teams like The Casuals from Dundalk who dominated the women’s competitions in Drogheda, but we’d like to know did they feature strongly in the leagues closer to home?

“In the men’s competition, the Beatlers from Inniskeen were reported to have been the only team with a supporters’ club, there is such social side to this story that has to be recorded.” Museum Curator, Brian Walsh,

agreed saying that at this time Irish society was just about to change.

This was the time of the Ban on foreign games, the role of women is being questioned, people’s social lives are changing in so many different ways and the football leagues were highlighting the transformation that is about to come.

“We’d welcome people to join in on Thursday June 20th next to share their memories, photos and memorabilia. No matter how long or short we would like to hear all your stories,” he added.

Cricket club

Dundalk Cricket Club has been running for the last five years and making sure Dundalk and the counties of Louth, Monaghan and Cavan get to enjoy the sport and is calling on new members to join.

This year the club saw the need to be more accessible to the town and moved its playing grounds to Hiney Park.

The cricket team is run by local members who are always in the hunt for new members to join the club.

The team participates in Leinster Cricket League and enjoys competitive cricket. Needless to say players of all ages (minimum 13 years old) and skill sets are welcome to join the club.

All playing equipment is provided by the club and there is a good mix of home and away matches.

Louth libraries launch summer reading series L

Louth Library service will run the Summer Stars reading programme for children in all library branches during the summer holidays from June 18 to the end of August .

This free reading adventure encourages children to read over their summer holidays, to enjoy the fun and pleasure of reading, and participate in the related events and activities at their local library.

Summer stars is a completely free programme and open to all children.

Each child simply keeps a record of the books they read on their reading card and gets recognition and encouragement along the way.

At the end of the programme, all children who participated will receive their own certificate of achievement at a special awards event .

The event will feature stories of business owners like Peter Mangan of The Freebird Club who already knows the benefit of appealing to an over 50s audience. His award winning social and travel club for the over 50s is a shining ex-

ample of how to design and/or adapt a business to suit this audience.

Project Manager Sarah Mallon explained that EU estimates indicate that the over 50s market, also known as the “Silver Economy”, will be worth over €5 trillion annually by 2025, as she revealed the reasons for staging the event.

“We delivered a dynamic, interactive twoday Boot Camp in April for businesses wanting to adapt to the needs of the over 50s market.

Now we want to show-

case these companies and the changes they have made to help inform and educate other business owners about the opportunities and supports available.

“We’re inviting business owners (or potential business owners) along to a free half day seminar on Wednesday June 26 from 9.30am to 1pm at An Tain Theatre in Dundalk.
