Dundalk FC supporters were left shaken on Friday night as a gang of thugs threw bricks at the supporters buses outside the Brandywell in Derry.

Windows were smashed and one young Dundalk supporter got cut just under his eye narrowly avoiding a much more serious injury.

The incident occurred after Dundalk’s 1-0 victory over Derry and is believed to have been instigated by local individuals who were not at the game and who have nothing to do with Derry City football club.

Parades prove a huge success in Dundalk and Blackrock

Up to 25,000 people lined the streets of Dundalk on Tuesday afternoon as the annual St Patrick’s Day parade brightened up the town in what was a fun filled family event.

On a dry spring afternoon, large crowds turned up to watch the parade start off in Carroll Village with over 60 floats taking part in the event.

The party atmosphere on the streets was soon in full swing as Dundalk FC title winning manager Stephen Kenny led the parade in his role as Grand Marshal.

More than 60 community groups, brass

bands, charities and businesses took part in the celebrations which entertained both young and old along the packed streets.

Helena Mullins from this year’s St Patrick’s Day committee was delighted with the turnout for the parade.

“We were all very happy with how the parade went this year.

Obviously there was a lot of time put into it and it was great to see the people of Dundalk come out and enjoy the event.

“We had more than seventy floats taking part this year and the effort they all went to was fantastic so great credit goes to them

Official opening is a family affair The intimacy and warmth of the ceremony to mark the official opening of Aras Ui Chuanaigh made it clear that this was not just a celebration of a new building but a recognition of the contribution the wider Colaiste Ris family has made to ensuring the continued success of the Dundalk school.

Staff and students were joined by parents, past pupils and friends of the school at the opening of the new building containing a study hall, two classrooms and canteen, which was named in honour of the school’s first lay principal, Prionsias O Cuanaigh.

However, it was the fact that Mr O Cuanaigh’s wife, Carmel, had the honour of ‘cutting the ribbon’, that said most about this occasion.

The message from all who spoke at the cere-

mony made it clear that nothing could have been achieved in the school without the support and hard work of the whole Colaiste Ris family, and Mrs O Cuanaigh certainly epitomised that spirit.

Her unstinting support for her husband, who transformed the school after taking the reins in 1986, summed up the attitude needed from all associated with Colaiste Ris to ensure they continue to make great progress.

Mr O Cuanaigh thanked all those whose efforts brought the construction of the building to reality, and on a personal basis this was a nostalgic and emotional day.

“The warmth and homliness of this building truly reflects the ethos of Colaiste Rís”, he stated and added that he was flabbergasted when he heard about the

naming of the new extension.

Mr O Cuanaigh, who revealed that he was humbled and honoured to be principal for 15 years, during which time he saw the building of a gym, Haughey building and woodwork block, to ensure the end of prefabs.

The occasion, which was conducted in English, Irish and occasional Latin, reflected on the strong history of the school and its contribution to Dundalk, while also looking to further progress in the future.

Contributions were made by principal Padraig Hamill, Fr Michael Murtagh of the Board of Management, and Finbarr Reilly of the Parents and Friends Committee, and students, Cathal Purcell and Orlaith Mulholland reflecting the combined efforts that made the building possible.

Serial letter writer held hopes of relationship for 15 years

resulting in the 42-year-old A woman who harboured over a 15 year period.

The unwanted attentions Dundalk woman appearing at hopes of establishing a relationship with a man, sent him letters reached a point where the man Dundalk District Court.

The defendant pleaded guilty and parcels on a regular basis made a complaint to the Gardai

to charges of harassment as a result of the post sent to the man, along with his father and brother, who lived with him in Mid Louth.

The court heard that the accused began writing the letters in 1999 and in 2002 the man contacted Gardai but didn’t want to make an official complaint. The incident was dealt with by way of mediation with the defendant’s family and as a result the letters stopped for six months.

However, the letters began again and continued up to September last year.

Insp Yvonne Murphy stated

that the letters were eight to ten pages long, some typed and some hand-written. They were not sinister or threatening in any way, but it was the volume that concerned the man.

The injured party tried to ignore the letters but in 2014 he made an official complaint. As a result the accused was arrested and made full admissions.

Solicitor, Frank McDonnell, stated that the letters arose as a result of her attention which was unrequited.

“There was never any relationship from his perspective but she harboured hopes for years. The communications have

stopped since the complaint was made”, he added.

“There was no threat or intimidation but it was the continuous unwanted communication that the injured party didn’t want. It is a criminal offence and she is embarrassed by this”, added Mr McDonnell.

The solicitor added that his client comes from an excellent background, is single and is in full-time employment. He pointed out that she suffers from stress and vertigo but has attended a counselor.

Judge Flann Brennan adjourned the case for a Probation Report to April 22.

Pyjama day in DkIT for Autism

Students at Dundalk Institute of Technology came together and donned their pyjamas in a bid to raise funds for Autism Support Louth. The event, which coincided with the beginning of DkIT’s RAG week tasked the students to find their wackiest pyjamas and onesies and wear them around the college all day in a bid to raise funds for the charity which provides much needed support and education for families living with autism.

With numerous students getting involved the event successfully raised €300 which will go towards the youth group service which is currently run weekly by Autism Support Louth. Autism Support Louth was founded in 2003 by a group of parents with children affected by Autism.

Redeemer celebrates St Patrick

OVER 200 Dundalk primary school pupils performed songs, poems and dances at a cultural event in honour of St Patrick’s Day. The Redeemer Boys and Girls National School pupils, aged from three years old to 6th Class, were decked out in green attire for the annual concert.

“One of the teachers from the Boys’ School, Eileen Hart, played the harp to greet parents as they came into the hall,” revealed Redeemer Girls’ School Deputy Principal Patricia Gilmore.

Redeemer Boys’ National School Principal, Frank Mullen, kickstarted the event on Monday, March 16th.

Mr Mullen implored parents in the audience to join the Parents Association Committee next year.

The Irish Heart Foundation in conjunction with Louth Sports Partnership will run a Community Walking Leader Training Course, April 18 and 19 in Muirhevnamor Community Centre, Dundalk.

The training is primarily

aimed at those wishing to lead a local walking group or promote walking in their community or workplace.

The course comprises of a weekend of training and a follow up four- week leader task to try out your new walking leader skills.

New figures indicate that the number of interns participating in the JobBridge initiative in County Louth to date is 978, with 178 currently enrolled in the scheme.

However, a recent report suggests that significant reform is needed to enhance the experience of participants and increase their progression into secure employment.

Internships may have a role to play, but only if properly structured and controlled. That’s according to the National Youth Council of Ireland (NYCI) report JobBridge: Stepping Stone or Dead End? published recently. The study explores the views and experiences of young people aged 18 to 25 who participated in the National Internship Scheme, JobBridge.

Training for those leading a walking group Irish Heart Foundation, HSE Health Promotion and the Irish Sports Council are subsidising the course and there is a fee of €50 which will cover your training, materials and two lunches. The course will run on Saturday 18 from 9am to 5pm and

Sunday from 9am-2.30pm.

During the weekend you will gain a greater understanding of the health benefits of walking, learn to develop and lead a local walking session for mixed fitness levels, receive advice on starting a new walking

group or promoting an existing group and gain a greater understanding of posture, technique, stretching and safety issues for a successful walk.

Man is embarrassed at drink driving charge A 49-year-old man who pleaded guilty to a drink driving offence was disqualified for three years at Dundalk District Court.

Anthony Ferreira, with an address at 1 Millrise, Duleek, Co Meath, who is now living in Dundalk, was stopped by Gardai at a checkpoint at Ladywell on August 1, 2014.

It was stated that Gardai noticed

the car roll backwards, and when they spoke to the defendant there was a strong smell of alcohol and his speech was slurred.

A subsequent breath test showed he was over the limit for driving.

Solicitor, Sean T O’Reilly stated that his client was in the country for 14 years and had been working full time until the recession

set in. He now works part-time in Duleek but lives in Dundalk.

He added that Mr Ferreira’s documents were out of date but that he had applied for them from Brazil. Mr O’Reilly pointed out that his client was embarrassed to be in court and it was unlikely that he would return.

Judge Flann Brennan also imposed a €300 fine.

Paypal and eBay donate funds to charity PayPal and eBay today announced that three County Louth charities will receive funding from their 2015 GIVE charity programme that will distribute almost €55,000 to thirteen Irish charities.

The Maria Goretti Foundation is receiving a grant of €5,000 towards the construction of a Sensory Garden at their respite centre

in Lordship for children with disabilities.

Holly’s Horse Haven is receiving a grant of €2,000 towards a new horse ambulance to rescue animals in need. Dundalk Dog Rescue is receiving a grant of €2,330 to fund the doubling of its foster team from 15 to 30 homes.

Fun in the Park was the name of the game for members of Dundalk Karate on Saturday. Head of Dundalk Karate, Sensei Mary Marcus decided that since the weather was improving, it was time to re-introduce Training in the Park for all members, family and friends.

Even with the sun still hiding behind the clouds, numerous Junior and Senior members enjoyed blowing the cobwebs away in St Helena Park on Saturday according to Mary Marcus.

It was great to see everyone taking part in all activities, and to see mum’s and dad’s joining in with all the kids was brilliant.”

With numerous competitions on Dundalk Karate’s schedule over the next few months, members are

taking advantage of any extra training available to them. One of their next opportunities will be an Open Kata Seminar with Emma Lucraft, who is a European Karate Champion and World Karate Bronze Medalist.

This Seminar is being held in Dublin on April 11 and is open to all organisations. Numerous members of Dundalk Karate trained with World Champion Junior Lefevre earlier this year, where they learned Kumite techniques (fighting), and are now eagerly anticipating this new and exciting opportunity with Emma Lucraft.

It was case of ’40 shades of purple’ in Dundalk on Thursday last as the fundraiser in aid of the Irish Cancer Society proved to be a huge success.

Dyed hair and beards, along with the occasional wig, were the order of the day as the brainchild of a delighted local woman, Orla Crilly, caught the imagination of the town.

“It turned out to be a brilliant day and everything went smoothly”, laughed Orla who was determined to enjoy the day despite all the hard work.

“I was determined not to get too stressed about it as I wanted to enjoy the day and make sure

everybody else did. It was great the way people responded to the idea whether they were

having their hair dyed, working in the hairdressers or just making a contribution”, explained

Orla who was assisted

by Fiona Thompson in organising the event.

“The hairdressers were brilliant as they made a huge effort and even took on people at the last minute.

“It was great to see so many purple heads around town”, added Orla.

There were 60 volunteers who turned purple for the day and already there is talk of having the event again next year, but for the moment Orla is concentrating on getting the money so she can make the presentation to the Irish Cancer Society.

Launch of St Patrick’s Camino

Local man Seamus Crossan is hoping to get Dundalk back on the tourist map with the launch of the Irish version of the famous Camino de Santiago walk.

Seamus who is originally from the Quay has been a keen walker for as long as he can remember and he was delighted to be part of the St Patrick’s Day launch for phase 1 of the

St Patrick’s Camino which consists of a walk from Downpatrick to Faughart.

The trail will operate in eleven counties starting in Down before moving on to Armagh, Monaghan, Louth, Meath, Dublin, Kildare, Westmeath, Longford, Roscommon and Mayo. According to Seamus this is the first phase what will eventually become a 600km trek which will attract visitors from all over the world.

“Many people might think that Ireland’s climate doesn’t suit walking holidays but with the correct clothing and footwear this country offers an excellent year round temperate climate for walkers which is borne out by the huge amount of walkers in Ireland today”, added Seamus.

Seamus hopes the walking trails will attract visitors to Co. Louth with the aim of encouraging them to stay overnight

by using €15 a night ‘Glamping Sites’ which are billed as glamorous camping without the need to pitch a tent or sacrifice luxury.

It is estimated that a total of 36 glamping sites will be used along the route of St Patrick’s camino.

The Louth trail when completed will include Faughart, Annagassan, Dunany Point, Clogherhead and Termonfeckin.

in Brief April concerts

Two of Dundalk’s foremost musical ensembles are rehearsing for their upcoming concerts in Dundalk and Dublin in April. Clermont Chorale and the Fr Mc Nally Chamber Orchestra will collaborate with Dublin choral group Cantoirí Avondale in a programme of choral and orchestral music which is sure to entertain their audiences.

The plan for the concerts was conceived last summer when Clermont Chorale’s director Irene Barr was approached by Ruaidhrí O Dálaigh of Cantoirí Avondale with a view to staging a joint concert.

The Dundalk concert will take place in the Marist Church on Sunday April 19 at 5pm and the following week the same concert will be performed in St Patrick’s Cathedral Dublin on April 25.

Liby Dynamites Basketball Club have won the league and cup double in the U16 girls NELB North East League of Basketball.

Having beaten Navan Cougars in the semi final Dynamites went up against the host team Longford Falcons who the beat for the league title last week . Not only did Dynamites win the double but also took home the MVP (most valuable player award).

Next weekend Liby Dynamites u14 girls play their cup games in Cavan and with the u18 boys and girls who finished second in their leagues, the challenge for cup honours will be held in Dromiskin on Sunday next.

Louth County Libraries are helping to celebrate the PolskaEire Festival 2015. This is a nationwide festival celebrating the contribution of the Polish community living in Ireland. The festival will be celebrated March 21 and run to March 29, the day of the Ireland v Poland qualifier match.

Dundalk Library are running an Easter crafts workshop with the local Polish School on Saturday Mar 21 at 11am. Suitable for ages 6+.

On Wednesday March 25 at 4pm, the library will host a soccer skills workshop and Q&A with players from the Dundalk FC team.

On Wednesday April 8, the library will run a screenprinting workshop for children aged 7+.

‘A Feast of Words’ arts and wellbeing initiative is being celebrated in Dundalk Library on Thursday March 26 at 6.30pm with a creative writing workshop for adults entitled ‘Writing History’. Author Nicola Pierce will deliver the workshop and give aspiring authors some writing tips and explain her own writing processes.

Students take part in cross border trade fair The annual Dundalk Cross-Border Student Enterprise Trade Fair takes place in the Marshes SC on Friday March 20 from 10am to 3pm.

A number of groups are expected to travel from the North to participate with groups from Dundalk and Drogheda.

This event is hosted annually by Dundalk Grammar School in cooperation with the management of the Marshes SC. Organisation of this year’s Fair is being coordinated by the Transition Year Events Management Group in co-operation with the Enterprise

teachers of the Grammar School.

This year’s event is receiving backing from Dundalk Chamber of Commerce, and support from Young Enterprise Northern Ireland.

A range of stalls will be selling a variety of products, all the result of student enterprise. One of the partic-

ipating groups, Havanna Cafe, will operate their coffee shop in the mall for the duration of the fair.

All stalls and participating groups will be judged, with judges being provided by Dundalk Chamber of Commerce. Various categories of prizes will be presented at an awards

ceremony which will take place at the conclusion of the event. A certificate of participation will be awarded to each participating group.

This fair is a showcase for the creative talents and enterprise of second level students, the entrepreneurs of the future.

Atmosphere is electric at sports Pupils from St. Joseph’s, Bay Estate, CBS Primary, and St. Nicholas Boys School competed in the fourth annual Louth Sportshall Athletics event. The event was held in the MPC in DKIT last Friday March 6. The atmosphere in the MPC was electric with Bay Estate emerging as the overall winning school. The Sports Unit would like to congratulate all pupils who represented their schools with pride and enthusiasm. We would also like to thank all the volunteers who assisted on the day including DKIT students as without them the event would not have been possible. Sportshall Athletics is indoor athletics for children.

It is an enjoyable method of developing fundamental sports skills and fitness during cold winter months and an age appropriate pathway into mainstream athletics participation. The programme is a Louth Sports Partnership initiative which has been set up and run by the Sports Unit of Louth County Council.

Craobh Rua continues to provide vital service The staff and young people at the Craóbh Rua Youth Project in Muirhevnamor are looking forward to a year as busy and as proactive as 2014 has been for them.

The Craóbh Rua project house, which is situated on Doolargy Avenue, Muirhevnamor, provides a vital learning and meeting space for young people in the Holy Family Parish. Groups meet to participate in a range of programmes such as personal and social development, health awareness, conflict resolution and bullying. Training sessions in important life skills like communication, driver theory practice and leadership skills are carried out regularly. Young people who have attended the project have gone on to higher level training in Youth Work, Childcare, Beau-

The youth project sees informal and formal education as crucial to the development of young people. In 2014 Craóbh Rua took part in two major PEACE III projects, including the making of a short film, “Escape Plans”, with the Drogheda based film company Calipo and a Digital Arts Programme which brought together several youth groups throughout the country to explore conflict through digital art.

In conjunction with the Muirhevnamor Community Council’s Impact Project funded by the IFI, Craobh Rua was able to cater for double their numbers in their annual Summer Project. Past participants from Craóbh Rua were involved in supervision and showed excellent leadership skills. Flannagan says,“This had

a great impact on the community, as the young people supervising from Muirhevnamor were positive role models to their younger peers”.

Due to funding cuts in the last few years the staff at Craóbh Rua has found itself trying to achieve the same amount of activities on a smaller budget and fewer work hours, according to youth worker, Caroline Flanagan For the past nine years project staff has sought funding to expand the small property they work out of and to provide adequate space for the growing number of young people wanting to meet and work together in their own community.

They are hopeful that their appeal for the backing of a building extension will be supported as they continue to provide an essential service to the area.

First place for Marist in Irish Public Speaking competition Students from St. Mary’s College recently took part in the regional heat of Gael Linn’s prestigious ‘Abair’ Irish public speaking competition on Friday March 6.

Aisling Finnegan, Shane Durnin and Naomi Thompson represented the school on the day.

Competitors on the day had to speak about a topical issue for three minutes each. Aisling spoke about ‘Daoine gan Dídean’ / ‘The Homeless’, Shane spoke about ‘An Rialtas agus an Ghaeilge’ / ‘The Government and the Irish language’ and Naomi spoke about ‘Brú na Nollag’ / ‘The pressures of Christmas’.

All three speakers excelled on the day and Shane Durnin was delighted to achieve First Place in his category, receiving high commendation from the judges. Shane will now go on to the final which will be held after Easter.

Historic day for girls rugby team Saturday saw another milestone for Dundalk Rugby Club as Dundalk Girls played their first match of full contact rugby.

The girls travelled to face their local rivals in Boyne Rugby Club with training and preparation for this big day beginning in October last year. The hard work of months of practice

bore fruit when they gave their more experienced rivals a really tough test. Despite losing by a couple of tries the team played with skill and determination.

The final result remaining uncertain until the final whistle was blown.

In the forwards Maedhbh O’Callaghan, Danielle Halligan, and Sadhbh McDonnell cov-

ered every blade of grass on the pitch, were at every breakdown and ensured that good, clean, go-forward ball was provided for Zoe Valentine at scrum-half.

Zoe broke from the base of the scrum and distributed the ball to the backs with great confidence.

The backs including Orlagh Conway, Aoife Craven, Katie McGee, and Niamh Belton

tackled like demons. With ball in hand they ran aggressively, passed well and created many scoring opportunities.

Anyone between the ages of 12 and 17 who are interested at getting in at the start of something should come along to the club at Mill Road, where training continues every Saturday at 10am.

Lively debate at farmers’ annual meeting

Louth IFA held its AGM on Monday March 2 in Dooleys Pub Edmonstown Ardee.

In attendance was IFA President Eddie Downey where he spoke about the problems experienced by beef farmers in the last year and the strategy the IFA took and the importance of the beef forum, also there was a discussion about the efforts tillage farmers were going have to go to in order to comply with the new Greening under the Rules of the next CAP. There was lively debate regarding the GLAS (Green Low Carbon Agri Scheme) which is the scheme being introduced that replaces the REPS environmental Scheme.

Chairman of Louth IFA Matthew Mc Greehan said that some farmers were hugely dependent on REPS in the past 20 years and REPS delivered for farmers, the environment and the local economy but the more we are finding out about this new GLAS scheme the more worried farmers are becoming and some farmers just simply will not join because of all the bureaucracy and fees there are” Regional Chairman Bert Stewart who is IFA s National Animal Health spokesman was also in attendance and gave a report on the BVD programme and the fall in TB and the phasing out of testing for Brucellosis testing.

Matthew McGreehan said there is huge concern about rural crime and law and order in the county and farmers have been contacting him recently about the closure of Garda stations in Dunleer, Castlebellingham and other areas where Garda stations have been all but closed.

Pupils celebrate the best of being Irish

Realt na Mara NS was a hive of activity over the past two weeks as pupils and teachers celebrated many of the great qualities of being Irish as part of Seachtain na Gaelige.

The students put in a huge amount of work, in the class room where they spent a week preparing for the events which allowed them display many of their talents and the projects

they had undertaken.

The school places a big emphasis on using Irish “chomh minic agus is feidir” (as often as possible) in class and on the corridors, while pupils were working on their art, poetry and story entries for competitions.

how to set dance during PE. All classes were taught a different dance and their new skills were demonstrated to parents and family members on Thursday. First up was the Ceili Beag at lunchtime, and later that evening the Ceili Mor proved a huge hit.

The teachers even got in on the act with Principal Phil McCaul and Louise O’Kane joining in with the school’s traditional Irish music group.

A man who claimed he was doing a charitable deed while also giving a prospective customer a test drive in a car, denied that he was using his trade plates illegally.

Sean Quigley of Highgrange, Ballymascanlon, Dundalk, who described himself as an entrepreneur and a director of Four Counties Oil in the town, was initially convicted of the offence before Judge Flann Brennan vacated the order and adjourned the case to May 20 to allow the defendant get legal representation.

The court heard from the prosecuting Garda that on June 26, 2014, Mr Quigley brought a friend to Blackrock.

Both men made calls to

shops in the village and the Garda argued that his use of the plates was contrary to the act.

Mr Quigley, who represented himself, stated that his friend had expressed an interest in purchasing the car and as he also wanted to make a contribution to Conor Hughes for his charity, he decided to use the trip to Blackrock as a test drive.

The defendant also faced charges of not having tax and explained that he had only recently purchased the car with the view to selling it. He had not received the tax book at that stage.

He argued that buying and selling cars was part of his business and that if he wasn’t entitled to

trade plates, he wouldn’t have them Judge Flann Brennan ruled that the defendant, who had a number of previous convictions for road traffic offences, was entitled to use trade plates but not in the circumstances as outlined.

He imposed a fine of €200 and struck out the tax charges. However, when it was pointed out that the penalty for conviction was a disqualification from holding a trade licence for one year, Judge Brennan reconsidered.

He offered the defendant the opportunity to seek the advice of a solicitor and when Mr Quigley accepted the case was put back to May.

Local boxer Amy Broadhurst was one of over 100 sportswomen to be honoured by President Michael D. Higgins and his wife Sabina at a reception to mark International Women’s Day. Amy enjoyed a stellar 2014 which was capped off by winning best boxer and gold medal for her performances in the Queens Cup International in Germany last October. Earlier this month she was the star performer of the successful Irish team who seen off Sweden in an international match.

‘Even better than its famous predecessor Da, as human and funny but richer in texture and even more cannily aware of the sad complexity of life’, according to the drama critic of the Daily Telegraph, it won the Harvey Award for best play and was nominated for a Tony Award on Broadway.

It tells the story – (through present time and flashbacks) - of a cranky civil servant who is on the verge of retiring and explores the relationship he has with his wife and another couple whom they both have known for forty years.

Jack Montgomery plays the part of curmudgeon Drumm, and his forty year younger self is played by Trevor Lee. Maeve Montgomery plays Drumm’s wife Dolly and her younger self is played by Fiona Mullen.

The other couple in the story – Lar and Mary Kearns – played by Jimmy McEneaney and Mary Brennan in the present and Paudie Breen and Lynsey O’Neill in flashback, complete the hugely talented cast. A thoughtful, entertaining evening of theatre is assured. Great talent on display for Scoildrámaíochta The Mac Anna theatre in DkIT was the venue for ‘Féile Dhún Dealgan’, the Dundalk Regional Competition of the Irish Language drama festival organised

by An Cumann Scoildrámaíochta.

Twelve entries from a total of eleven schools took part on Monday March 9: Kilsaran National School, St. Joseph’s Muirhevnamor, St. Patrick’s Kilcurry, Bellurgan National School, Gaelscoil Dhún Dealgan, St. Oliver’s Drogheda, Scoil Aonghusa Drogheda, St. Mary’s College Dundalk, St. Vincent’s Dundalk, Coláiste Rís and Coláiste Lú.

Adjudicator, Frances Quinn was hugely impressed with the standard of acting and production seen over the course of the 12 productions.

Frances is a teacher, storyteller and actor. Her acting background is in radio, theatre, television and film.

Her theatre work ranges from the London Fringe, the Edinburgh Fringe, touring companies and repertory to the English National Theatre.

FINBAR FUREY Dundalk’s Cuchulainn Cycling Club at the Spring Sixty event in Camlough.

The cycle season has been laying on events thick and fast for Cuchulainn’s competitive and Leisure cyclists alike.

The latest road racing action was held in Meath’s Slane Village last Saturday and the club had riders in all three events.

The result of the day for the club came in the A3 event, where evergreen Alan Bingham lined up alongside a number of other club men.

The race was held over six laps of a 12km circuit and from the gun a group slipped off the front containing Bingham.

The other Dundalk riders in the

bunch rode intelligently to ensure the break maintained its advantage. In the sprint for the win Bingham was edged into third by David Mullolland of Dublin Wheelers, the victor, and Cathal Clarke of Newry Wheelers.

Recently the leisure cyclist descended on mass into Camlough for the Sprint Sixty event. The tough 60km course wound it’s way around South Armagh and North Louth, with a stop at Fitzpatricks for soup and sandwiches.

The club had 50 members attend and all enjoyed the scenic course, despite the hills.

Hunters gearing up for Leprechaun chase

On Sunday March 29 the Leprechaun Hunt on Slieve Foy, Carlingford, will welcome thousands of hunters, big and small, for the National Leprechaun Hunt in Carlingford in their quest to find one of the wee egreen men during this fun efamily day out. dThe event has captured the nation’s imagination since the official designation of Slieve Foy Mountain as an EU

Special Protection Area for Little People in 2010.

Over 20 years ago, the suit and bones of a leprechaun were found on The Slieve Foy mountain by the late, well known businessman PJ O’Hare.

He discovered them after hearing a faint crying and when he went to investigate, he was shocked to find the suit of a leprechaun, along with bones and four gold

coins.

This sparked the original Leprechaun Hunt which was held on the Easter Sunday of 1989, attracting thousands of visitors to the region.

Prospecting licences will be sold on the day at €5 per person and registration begins at 1pm.

Only carriers of authenticated licences will be allowed on the mountain that day.

Comedy duo for Spirit Store

The Spirit Store is the next step on a nationwide tour for hotly-tipped sketch group Foil, Arms & Hog. The trio return to the venue on Sunday March 22 as part of their Irish tour, which includes another trip to Vicar Street for the sketch troupe.

The sketch group are on a rich vein of form, fresh from another sell-out run at the Edinburgh Festival.

They have appeared on several Irish TV shows, and their weekly YouTube

sketches are an internet sensation – particularly their “Hashtag” sketch after Jimmy Fallon and Justin Timberlake performed one inspired by it.

On October 1, 2014, Extern celebrated its 10 year anniversary in Dundalk, by inviting many professionals and other Voluntary projects that Extern has worked in partnership with over the last 10 year.

The group has been working with families in the North East areas since January 2003 and the service offered in this area is called Linx Programmes– an intensive support programme with elements of individual, group

and family support. Referrals are received directly from local social work child protection teams. The children and families availing of the service may require support at home, in school, or within their community.

“We were alarmed at the events that took place after the match and have discussed the issue at length with Derry City FC who have informed us that they are taking steps to ensure that this does not happen again.

“We hope everybody who made the trip home on damaged buses has recovered from what was obviously a distressing incident”, the statement added.

NEW VW PASSAT ALLTRACK

The Alltrack takes the new Passat Estate and gives a rough tough look by jacking up the suspension by 27.5 mm, adding 4MOTION permanent all-wheel drive and giving it some extra bodywork protection. It designed for those who require 4x4 traction with the convenience and handling of an estate car over the usual SUV options.

Power comes from a choice of five engines, two petrol a 2.0-litre 150 PS and a 2.0-litre 220 PS, if you prefer diesel then there is a 2.0-litre unit with the choice of 150PS, 190PS or 240PS power outputs.

The new Volkswagen Passat Alltrack features EDS (electronic differential lock), XDS+ and 4MOTION permanent all-wheel drive with an off-road driving programme. All models will

tow up to 2,200 kgs (braked) bar the 150PS petrol 1,800 kgs (braked).

There will be plenty of tech include connectivity

for smartphones via Volkswagen’s App Connect including Mirror Link, Car Play (Apple) and Android Auto (Google) to replicate

the owners phone on 6.5” integrated touch screen, where fitted. Other features include Active Info Display (fully digital instruments),

head-up display (for projecting information), Media Control rear seat entertainment system for tablet computers, Front Assist (lane-changing assistant), Emergency Assist (stops vehicle in emergency), Traffic Jam Assist, Rear Traffic Alert (detects vehicles in cross-traffic when backing out of parking spaces) and Trailer Assist (for assisted manoeuvring with a trailer).

There are 18-inch Pegasus anthracite alloy wheels, Dynamic chassis control (DCC), tri-zone climate control and the 10-speaker CANTON sound system.

The NEW Skoda Superb

Skoda have launched the brand new Skoda Superb.

The new Superb has 4,861mm x 1,864 mm footprint which makes it some 28mm longer and 47mm than the current outgoing model.

The wheelbase has been extended by 80mm to 2,841mm which has help to improve interior and luggage capacity. The boot can now accommodate 625 litres (up 30 litres) and with the seats folded down this increases to 1,760 litres, yet overall it weighs some 75kgs less.

There will be a choice of seven engines, with depending on the model there is the option of DSG automatic and 4X4 transmissions. The four petrol engine line-up comprises 1.4 TSI (125PS), 1.4 TSI (150PS), 2.0 TSI

(220PS), 2.0 TSI (280PS) and the diesels are made up of the 1.6 TDI (120PS),

2.0 TDI (150PS) and the 2.0 TDI (190PS).

At launch there will be

four trim levels. Standard equipment across the range includes alloy

wheels, air conditioning, DAB digital radio with a touchscreen infotainment system.

The second level up features such as Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) and SmartLink smartphone connectivity. There are 17inch Helios alloy wheels, dual-zone air conditioning, rear parking sensors and cornering front fog lights plus two umbrellas stored in the front doors.

The next level adds on BiXenon headlights with AFS and LED daytime running lights, leather upholstery with heated seats and Columbus satellite navigation with 8-inch touchscreen interface. The wheels are upgraded to 18inch Zenith alloy wheels, there is also an electrically operated boot and Drive mode selection.
