Despite her tender years Dundalk girl Allie Farrell is becoming something of a seasoned pro in the modelling world with trips to fashion meccas such as Paris and New York now becoming the norm.

Six-year old Allie made her catwalk debut during Paris fashion week when she was just three years old and since then the senior infants pupil has modelled all over the world including Paris, London and New York.

Last week Allie made her second trip to New York Fashion week where she modelled for children’s clothing company Camellia Couture.

A positive step for Narrow Water Bridge Project

Monday’s meeting of Louth County Council saw Sinn Féin Councillor Antóin Watters once again raise the issue of the Narrow Water Bridge Project.

Cllr Watters said “this project is a vital piece of infrastructure in the

development of tourism around the north Louth area and it was included in the New Decade, New Approach Deal which saw the institutions restored in at Stormont. We need to push ahead with this and pursue all avenues to get this shovel ready project under construction.”

Cllr Watters welcomed the positive response from the Chief Executive when he requested that Louth County Council make contact with the relevant ministers in the north to discuss the project and how it can be moved forward.

The Chief Executive confirmed she will write to the North/South Ministerial Council on the matter stating that they had not included Louth County Council in their last review of the Project.

Six-year old Allie made her catwalk debut during Paris fashion week when she was just three years old and since then the Senior Infants pupil has modelled all over the world including Paris, London and New York.

York Fashion week where she modelled for children’s clothing company Camellia Couture.

The fashionable tot first came to the attention of designers via an Instagram page set up by her mam Stacey with major fashion labels contacting her asking to work with them.

Stacey and Allie enjoyed a huge thrill during their trip to New York when the youngsters image was beamed down from a huge billboard in Times Square.

According to Allie’s mother Stacey the whole journey has been hugely enjoyable as well as surreal on occasions.

“For Allie all of this is just so much fun and so enjoyable for her. She’s very outgoing and loves clothes and meeting new people so this is all such a thrill for her.

“When we saw her image on the huge billboard in Times Square last week it was just such a surreal moment for us.

The whole thing started with me just putting a few pictures of Allie

“For me I still get very proud and excited when I see Allie walk down the runway and it

is great to see her having so much fun. I sometimes get nervous ahead of big shows but she takes everything in her stride. She doesn’t think of this as a job at all and sees it as just a hobby which is great as there is no pressure on her at all.

She wants to be a scientist when she grows up and in her mind this is just something she

Louth After School Services must be protected

Sinn Féin TD Ruairí Ó Murchú has said that the Department of Children and Youth Affairs must step in to ensure that the new National Childcare Scheme does not lead to the closure of four essential afterschool services in Louth.

The newly elected TD was speaking following a meeting in The Boomerang Youth Cafe in Drogheda on Friday February 14 at which representatives from three of the four services in jeopardy were in attendance.

An Teachta Ó Murchú explained tht he had been contacted by afterschool projects operating in Cox’s Demesne and Toberona in Dundalk and Moneymore in Drogheda.

“I understand that Muirhevnamor Afterschool Service in Dundalk and a number of others in the county are also affected. The issue arises due to changes in the funding model associated with the National Childcare Scheme which will mean that almost all of the children currently using the service will be ineligible.

“This will have a hugely detrimental impact, not only on the services in

question but also on the children and families affected. These After School Services are located in some of the most socially disadvantaged areas in Louth and I know that the work done with the children and young people who attend makes a real difference in their lives.

“I will champion any supports which are being delivered in areas in which really good people are living with huge difficulties in terms of drug related criminality and antisocial behaviour. I will also stand against any reduction in service delivery in these areas.

“As an outcome of the meeting this morning I have written to the other Louth TDs with a view to seeking a joint meeting with the Assistant Secretary General in the Department of Children & Youth Affairs’ Early Learning and School Age Childcare Division.

“I am hopeful that a resolution can be found and I commend the four service providers for coming together this morning to update Deputies on this issue,” he added.

PayPal sponsor St Patrick’s Day Parade

Dundalk’s St Patrick’s Day Parade has a new sponsor after it was announced that PayPal have come on board to give their backing to the event.

The global online payments company, PayPal, was announced on Friday as the sponsor of the 2020 St. Patrick’s Day parade. The decision was made by the voluntary St. Patrick’s Day committee as work continues on the ‘Urban Green’-themed events.

Cllr Conor Keelan, committee chairperson revealed that he was delighted to make the announcement that PayPal is leading the team of sponsors.

“PayPal plays a huge role in Dundalk life and is the perfect sponsor for our ‘Urban Green’ theme as it is actively reducing its carbon footprint with many group projects across the entire site.

“At its most recent event, it planted over 500 trees in locations around town and has made an annual event of cleaning local

beaches and forests,” he stated.

Cllr Keelan also said he was pleased with the response from community groups and schools who have already signed up to take part.

“Continuing on from the theme of ‘Urban Green’ and to reduce our carbon footprint, the committee is appealing to the owners of electric cars who wish to get involved or participate in the parade to contact them via email: stpatsdundalk@ gmail.com.

“It’s time to showcase your creativity as the St Patrick’s Day parade is less than a few weeks away. As everyone knows, ‘Urban Green’ is this year’s theme for the Dundalk parade and for the two-day event in music and family fun,” added Cllr Keelan.

‘The theme celebrates the public realm regeneration of Church Street/Clanbrassil Street and the innovative urban street art created during the Seek Festival 2019.

Green is synonymous with St. Patrick’s Day but also green environmental issues and credentials.

“The aim is to make the 2020 event the greenest ever festival and the plan is to have an evening parade on March 16, committing to the original route with a music-centred, family- friendly, town centre event on March 17.

De La Salle make it through to The Walton’s Music Competition Final De La Salle secondary school have made it through to the final of the prestigious Walton’s Music Competition. The annual Waltons Music for Schools Competition is a non-profit national initiative designed to support and reward music-making in Irish schools and at the same time incentivise teachers and schools to develop their music programmes and make music accessible to as many students as possible. The Competition is designed to promote the enormous benefits of – both musical and non-musical – of creative and collaborative music making for young people and to provide finalists with the opportunity to perform their finished works at a prestigious national venue.

All primary and post-primary schools recognised by the Department of Education and Skills in the Republic of Ireland are eligible to enter the Music for Schools Competition

According to Pamela Campbell who is a music teacher in the school the theme of their entry was aimed at creating awareness for autism.

“We dedicated this year’s Walton’s competition theme ‘where words fail, music speaks’ to autism and creating awareness. The opening section composed by Donnchadh Hughes represents the magical, creative mind of a non-verbal child with autism.

“From there, we created an arrangement of Phil Coulter’s ‘Scorn not his simplicity’ followed by a reel composed by Donnchadh. The reel gives life to the playful personality of the child. Finally, we chose ‘Unstoppable’ by Sia, as it demonstrates the fighter and inner strength of our superheroes. Have a listen and share the magic. Well done to all the students involved,” stated Pamela.

Holocaust survivor talks to DkIT students about learning from the past

Holocaust Survivor and Irish Citizen, Tomi Reichental visited Dundalk Institute of Technology (DkIT) last week to speak to students about his personal experiences of the holocaust as a prisoner in the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp during the 1930s and 1940s.

He visited the campus last year and was invited back by the School of Informatics & Creative Arts due to high demand from students. Speaking to a packed lecture hall, Tomi spoke of his concerns about the rise in right-wing politics.

“The holocaust is more important today than it was 20 years ago due to the rise of racism in Europe and America in recent times and the evident rise of AntiSemitism. The holocaust did not start with gas chambers. It started with whispers, taunting, abuse and then finally murder. It is up to us to stop this situation at the whisper stage because if we don’t do anything

now, we might find out that it’s too late,” he stated.

He urged students not to become bystanders to bullying or racist behaviour and to stand out against it. He also spoke about the importance of continuing to teaching young people about the history of the holocaust.

“Young people will carry the memory of this atrocity into the future.

I hope that when they hear my story that they will share it with friends and family. I ask all the young people that I meet to tell their children and

grandchildren that they met a living survivor of the holocaust and tell them that it did happen,” added Tomi.

DkIT President, Michael Mulvey, PhD greeted Tomi as he arrived on campus, and pointed out how important it was to hear the story.

“We are delighted to welcome Tomi back to share his story and his important message of respect, tolerance and remembrance to our students. This year we commemorate 75 years since the libera-

tion of Nazi concentration camps and it is vital that we continue to learn from lessons of the past.

It is a privilege for our students and staff to meet with Tomi and hear his personal accounts and reflections about this dark side of history,” he explained.

Tomi’s visit was coordinated by DkIT Lecturer, Dr Ingrid Lewis who is a specialist in the area of Holocaust Cinema and last year published the book ‘Women in European Holocaust Films: Perpetrators, Victims and Resisters’ .

Big surprise for Stephen on shopping trip to Oriel Park

Dundalk fan Stephen Murphy got more than he bargained for when he took a trip to Oriel Park last Tuesday to buy the team’s new jersey.

Stephen who hails from Aisling Park had just bought the new jersey in the club shop when Dundalk FC manager Vinny Perth came into the shop.

According to Stephen’s mother Helen, the Tallaght native couldn’t have

been nicer as he signed Stephen’s jersey as well as posing for a picture with the recently acquired Unite the Nations trophy.

“Myself and my son Stephen went up to Oriel to get him the new jersey last Tuesday afternoon.

He attends RehabCare each day and loves to talk about Dundalk FC to all his pals up there.

He would go to all the home matches and really enjoys seeing the club do well. He’s 40 years old

now so he’s seen them when they weren’t doing so well also. We had just bought the jersey when a man came into the shop and started talking to the guy selling the jerseys.

I didn’t have a clue who he was bought the fella in the shop told me that he was the Dundalk Fc manager.

“I was mad I didn’t know who he was as I would have gotten him to sign Stephen’s jersey.

However, Vinny was giv-

en a call to come back to us and he arrived a couple of minutes later with the Unite the Nations trophy. He signed Stephen’s jersey and posed for a couple of photos with Stephen and the trophy. It was very good of him and it made Stephen’s day. He was up in Oriel on Friday night cheering the team on in his newly signed jersey and he’s hoping that they can win the league again this year,” stated Helen.

Call to support Wee County Double House Draw

Louth GAA is continuing to push tickets for the Wee County Double House Draw are calling on individuals and businesses to support the initiative.

The draw has been launched to finance the development of the new County Grounds on the Inner Relief Road and Louth County Board are calling on supporters to get behind the project.

Tickets for the draw are priced at €100 with two semi-detached three-bedroom houses up for grabs along with a third prize of €10,000 cash, with the draw taking place on Saturday May 16.

One house is located at Sew View Way Dundalk and another house in Beaulieu Village, Drogheda. The holder of the first ticket drawn will

be given the choice of house or alternatively they can take a €200,000 cash prize.

In the event of the cash prize being taken, the second ticket holder will have a choice of either house or the €200,000 cash.

A maximum of 25,000 tickets will be sold for the draw and Louth County Board have been working hard over the past number of months

Local musicians perform at UN DkIT Culinary Arts students serve up gold at Chef Ireland 2020

An ensemble of five young traditional Irish musicians from the north-east region of Ireland represented Music Generation at the United Nations (UN) Headquarters in New York City as Mary Robinson (Chair of The Elders), António Guterres (UN Secretary General) and Bono (co-founder of the ONE Campaign) took part in the Irish Government’s launch of ‘The Drive For Five’, a global call to action for the education of adolescent girls. The five young musicians are: Kerrianne McCardle (Flute); Evelyn McCaul (Harp); Saoirse McGahern (Bodhrán); Iarla McMahon (Uilleann Pipes); and Kim Poole (Fiddle).

The five young musicians who took part in the event originally came together through their membership of ‘Nós Nua – Louth Youth Folk Orchestra’, a collaborative initiative between Music

Generation Louth and Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann in Ireland’s north-east region (based at The Oriel Centre, Dundalk). Together with members of the UN Choir and the Pihcintu Multicultural Chorus – a choir of immigrant and refugee girls based in Portland, Maine – their performance rounded out this high profile launch event, which was hosted by the Permanent Mission of Ireland. Already the response to The Drive For Five campaign has been significant, receiving support from nations worldwide.

Commenting on their experience after the event, the young musicians said: “We had the most amazing experience yesterday at the United Nations. It was an honour for us to represent Ireland and the young people of the world in advocating for every child and young person to have access to

education. We are very grateful to everyone who made this possible for us, we will never forget.”

Each of the five young people, ranging in age from 15-17, has previously been involved in various music programmes and initiatives led by Music Generation Louth and Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann at The Oriel Centre, including Nós Nua. Established in 2017, the 57-member Nós Nua Youth Folk Orchestra has previously performed at the IAYO Festival of Youth Orchestras in the National Concert Hall and at Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann. The Orchestra has been featured on Fleadh TV and later this year it will perform brand new music commissioned for them by previous BBC Radio 2 Musician of the Year, Mohsen Amini, funded by the Arts Council Young Ensembles Scheme.

Two Culinary Arts students at Dundalk Institute of Technology (DkIT) received gold and silver medals along with best in class titles at this year’s Chef Ireland 2020 competition which took place in Citywest Hotel, Dublin.

Second year students, Ryan Dowling from Shercock, and Van Phouc Le from Dundalk, were awarded the highest marks in the Junior Fish Competition with their dish of brill, cauliflower and mussel ragu, taking home the gold award and ‘Best in Class’ for the dish.

This was preceded with a silver medal and ‘Best in Class’ in the Junior Lamb competition the previous day.

The students received high praise from the panel of judges with their professionalism, attention to detail and cooking skills. Chef Ireland judge, Billy Grimes said that they are a credit to DkIT with bright futures ahead.

Dowling said: “We only had two weeks to prepare for the competition and it was a great experience competing against our peers from all over the country. We received great support from our fellow students at DkIT but especially our wonderful lecturers. Alan McCabe and Michael McNamara mentored us for the competitions and we couldn’t be anymore grateful for their time, effort and support.”

Another Best in class and Silver medal was won by second year stu-

dent, Conor Farrell for his cold display Sacher Torte which rounded off two fantastic days of competition for the DkIT Students.

Head of the Department of Hospitality Studies at DkIT, Brianain Erraught was full of praise and noted that the students “have put in a lot of work and it’s great to see them rewarded for this, we are very proud of them”.

Winning student, Van Phouc added: “It is the great chance to compete with young chefs from

around the country to see where we are in this culinary industry. Also, I want to challenge myself. As a young chef, we are hungry to get medals.

We are so proud to represent Dundalk IT to take part in, and luckily we won the competition.”

Mentored by lecturers Rosemary Leonard, Michael Mc Namara and Alan Mc Cabe, the students also won the Grand Prix prize for DkIT with the highest marks amongst junior entries over the two days of competition.

Caolan continues fine form in South Africa Caolan Rafferty continued his excellent start to the 2020 season with a third place finish at the South African Strokeplay Championship which was played over the Firethorn course at Randpark Golf Club, the venue for last month’s South African Open on the European Tour.

The Dundalk Golf Club player went into the event after finishing sixth in the African Strokeplay Championship the previous week in what was his first tournament outing of the year and has returned home to Ireland full of optimism for the season ahead.

“It was a good two weeks down in South Africa. I didn’t really get off to a quick start in either of the events, I was a bit slow to get going and bit rusty after not playing a lot of golf. But, to be able to finish sixth and third having not really been on top of my game was really good.

I certainly have a few positives to take out of it. In both tournaments, as the weeks went on, I played pretty good golf

Caolan Rafferty turned in another good performance in South Africa

and last week I played really well in the final two rounds to get third place which was really nice.”

Rafferty opened with a two under par 70 in the first round at Randpark, shooting three birdies and a bogey, but despite being under par he found himself back in 16th place, six shots behind leader Jamie Wilson of Scotland.

A one under par 71, courtesy of two birdies and one bogey, in the second round saw him fall ten shots behind the new leader, 16-year-old Casey Jarvis, but the failure of his Ireland team-mate, Tiarnan McLarnon, to make the cut reaped a rich dividend for Rafferty.

“Tiarnan caddied for me in the

final two rounds and he was a great help through just simply talking about things. I saw the course in a different way with somebody else chipping in with their thoughts and that helped big time. We were communicating and going at it, taking shots on when we felt we could,” he explained.

In the final round Rafferty didn’t get out of traps as fast as he would have liked and had only moved to 11 under by the turn after birdieing the fifth and ninth and bogeying the eighth. However, he did finish strongly and fired home four birdies in five holes from the 12th to move to 15 under with two holes to go.

“The scoring was outrageous in Randpark. They set the course up really well and set it in a way that you could make birdies if you hit it in the right places but you could still make bogies. It was a nice way to play a golf course that presented the chances when you put the ball in play and put the ball in position.”

Saint Oliver’s 5k Race

Registration is now open for the third annual St Oliver’s 5K race, which takes place on Saturday March 21 at 11am.

The race, which raises much-needed funds for St Oliver’s Community Hospital in Dundalk, is available for registration at myrunresults.com. Last year, more than 200 runners took part and organisers are hoping that even more will put the St Oliver’s 5K on their events’ list for 2020.

There are cash prizes for first, second and third male and female categories and the first 200 finishers will receive a commemorative medal.

Registration, which costs €15, is open online and there will be registration at Dowdallshill GAA Hall, Newry Road, on Friday March 20 from 6.30pm to 8pm and from 9am on the morning of the race, which starts from the GAA club.

Louth winners of the National Enterprise Awards to be announced

Local Enterprise Week Louth is now just two weeks away with the event designed to meet the needs of local people through educational and networking events which will help business owners to start, plan, and grow their enterprise. Hosted by Louth County Council’s Local Enterprise Office (LEO), these free events will take place in venues up and down the county from March 2 to 6.

The highlight of the week is always the National Enterprise Awards lunch, which takes place on Friday March 6. Louth’s Head of Enterprise, Thomas McEvoy, this week extended an invitation to business owners to join him and the Local Enterprise Office

‘Glowing Works That Make The Heart Sing’ is a Louth Craftmark exhibition inspired by and dedicated to artist Patricia Murphy. The title is a quote taken from a review of Patricia’s colourful and energetic artwork by Fintan O’Toole.

It will take place in the Basement Gallery, An Táin Arts Centre, Dundalk.

Patricia was an internationally exhibited artist from Blackrock, County Louth, whose work included paintings, public art, installations and contemporary rugs. She passed away in 2018. Patricia was an influential member of Louth Craftmark. This exhibition is inspired by her vibrant and exhilarating artwork.

In Patricia’s own words; “My work is really inspired by energy, creative and natural energy, as expressed through the idea of light, weather and elemental things. I feel a bit like an intuitive scientist, observing, intrigued by

Dundalk Credit Union’s Annual Primary School Quiz Night took place in The Lisdoo, Dundalk on Monday, February 10.

With over 34 teams entering, the number in attendance was significantly larger than in previous years, such is its popularity with schools, children and their families across our community.

As always, the standard of answering was extremely high, which led to a tie break round.

The winning school was St Malachy’s Girls School, with CBS Primary second and Rampark National School third.

These three teams now go for-

ward to the regional final hosted by the Credit Union Development Association (CUDA) in The Crowne Plaza, Blanchardstown on March 7.

Storm Dennis ensured there were tricky condition at Dundalk Golf Club to test the field in last Sunday’s Four Man 14 Hole Scramble and in the end it was the experienced quartet of Pat Curran (14), Tadhg O’Sullivan (22), Andrew Shekleton (14) and Seamus Kelly (18) that prevailed.

The winners had just 0.3 of a shot to spare over the runners-up who were a formidable outfit themselves with two five handicappers in Conor McCaughey and Colin Roche as well as Martin Cairns (16) and Adrian Kenny (18).

The 14 Hole course did not include the third, fourth, 15th and 16th holes so after opening with two pars, the winners moved the

par three fifth where Shekleton’s tee-shot set up their first birdie of the round.

His tee-shot at the next, the par five sixth, also proved decisive in setting up another birdie and they then parred the next three holes to turn for home in 26.

It was O’Sullivan’s drive at the par five 10th that laid the foundation for their third birdie of the round and at the index one par four 11th it was off Curran’s drive that they delivered the fourth and final birdie of their round.

They then successfully negotiated the final five holes without dropping a shot to finished with a gross score of 52 which became a nett 43.5 after their team

handicap of 8.5 was deducted. A previous success over the winter

by Pat Curran saw 0.3 added to their score to leave them on 43.8 but it was still enough to deny McCaughey and his team-mates who finished on 44.1 after their various deduction.

The Captains’ Drive-In will take place this Sunday, February 23, at 1pm. There will be a 14 Hole Champagne Team of Four competition for the men in the morning with a shotgun start at 9.30am and the Drive-In will be followed by a Mixed Foursomes competition with a shotgun start at 1.16pm. Music and entertainment will be provided in the evening in the clubhouse.

New Hope Charity Receives Over €600 Donation New Hope charity shop, Long Walk, received a donation to help people with addictions. The shop is not only to help raise funds for the addiction centre but are an outreach to locals in Dundalk to help and assist people with addictions and their families.

Great celebration of families at Monastery NS Catholic Schools Week is an all Ireland annual event which invites Catholic Schools to give expression in a special way to the ethos of Catholic Education. It marked the beginning of a special annual celebration in Monastery National School Ardee from the end of January to the beginning of February. The theme for the week was “Catholic Schools;

Living in Harmony with God’s Creation” and each day of this special week Monastery NS teachers and pupils celebrated a unique theme.

On Wednesday January 29 Monastery NS hosted its annual Grandparents Day in all classes and over a hundred Grandparents were made feel welcome.

Pupils recited prayers, poems and songs composed for their

grandparents and they in turn told stories of times past in Ardee and they also told a few jokes.

Some of our grandparents spoke of their strong Catholic beliefs and the importance of faith in their lives. Afterwards our grandparents enjoyed a well earned cup of tea and a bun in our school Gym and many old friends met again.

PARKING IN IRELAND – WHERE (NOT) TO PARK

To park or not to park… that is the question every driver should be asking when they arrive at their destination. Safe parking is a key part of safe driving – where you leave your car on arrival is as important as how you drive it there. Bad parking can endanger or obstruct others on the road, especially pedestrians or cyclists if they have to go onto the road to get by. Badly parked vehicles can pose a particular issue for wheelchair users, those who are visually impaired, and parents with prams. They can also add to traffic congestion, and lead to fines, clamping or penalty points for the driver.

Your vehicle could even be towed away. There are many places and situations that parking is prohibited by law, so here’s the information you need…

What does the law say?

The rules around parking in Irewland are governed predominantly by the Road Traffic Acts (19612019), as well as bye-laws issued by clocal authorities. The key rule is that you cannot park a vehicle anywhere that interferes with the normal flow of traffic, or that obstructs or endangers others.

More specifically, the acts make it illegal to park a private car in the following circumstances: • On double yellow lines at any time • On a single yellow line, during the times shown on an accompanying sign • At the side of a road with a single white lane down the middle and/or a “No Overtaking” sign (unless there are 3 or more lanes each way) • On zig-zag road markings (usually yellow outside a school, or white at a pedestrian crossing) • Where there is a “No Parking” sign, during the times shown • Where there is a restricted “Parking” sign, outside of the times shown • On a Clearway, indicated by a circle with an X through it, during the times shown • In a cycle lane during the hours it is operational • In a contra-flow bus lane at any time, or in a with-flow bus lane, during the hours it is operational • In a bus-stop, taxi rank or loading bay* • In a tram lane or on tram tracks

• On a pedestrian-only street • At a pedestrian crossing • On a footpath, grass verge or median (the space between two carriageways), including where this is outside your house/business • In a Disabled parking spot without a permit • Anywhere on a motorway, including the hard shoulder • 15 metres before or 5 metres after a pedestrian crossing or traffic lights • 5 metres before or after any junctio • Anywhere that affects the entrance to or exit from a fire station, ambulance station or Garda station • Across an entrance to a premises/ driveway, unless the owner has consented *Loading bays may only be used by goods vehicles actively (un)loading for up to 30min.

What about on-street parking in towns and cities?

Most towns and cities have parking bye-laws, so watch out for signage indicating that a pay-anddisplay or disk parking system is in operation. If parking bays are

marked, you must park within the lines of one space. In some pay-anddisplay areas, including in Galway, Cork and Dublin Cities, you must move after a specified length of time and you can’t park again in the same street for at least an hour after that.

(Time-limits may not apply to vehicles with valid disabled parking permits or Car Club permits.) If you’re parked in a bus lane or clearway at a time outside its signposted operating hours, you must move before the operating hours begin.

In most areas, parking is not permitted in an Electric Vehicle Recharging Bay except for vehicles being charged.

If there is no signage displayed, you may park at the side of the road, as long as it doesn’t contravene any of the other regulations listed above – but be considerate to others on the roads. Park in the same direction as traffic flow, as close to the kerb as possible, with the handbrake on and the vehicle in first gear or reverse.

Don’t leave your headlights on. Passengers should get out on the kerbside where possible. Watch out for passing cyclists and pedestrians as you open the door – consider using the “Dutch Reach”.

What if I am a resident?

paid street-parking, you may need to apply for a resident’s permit from your local council to park on your street. In most cases, the permit allows you to park on a specific street or streets, but not necessarily a specific spot. Keep in mind that even with a resident’s permit, the above laws still apply regarding double yellow lines, footpaths, clearways, cycle and bus lanes, etc. Most councils also issue visitor permits for guests visiting your home – check with your local authority.

Watch out for the emergency services Something to be mindful of, especially in housing estates and on narrow roads, is making sure that you have left enough space for emergency vehicles to get past. Dublin Fire Brigade often highlight types of parking that can impede them getting to emergencies, such as vehicles parked directly opposite each other in a housing estate. A spokesperson explained “We’re asking people to park with emergency vehicles in mind. Even legal parking can hinder access for the emergency services. It could be a neighbour or relative our fire engines or ambulances are trying to reach. Take a second to think after you park: ‘In an emergency, can help get through?’” So before you leave the vehicle, think about whether a 2.55m-wide fire truck or ambulance will get past your vehicle in a hurry.

What about private car-parks?

Private carparks, whether standalone or part of a business’s premises, can set their own regulations in addition to the law. Rules and any fees should be clearly signposted near the entrance, and vehicles can be clamped or towed if the driver fails to observe the regulations.
