Christmas for most people is a time for family gatherings and enjoying good food and good company. However, for some it can be the loneliest day of the year with no family or friends around to enjoy sharing the day with. An Indian restaurant in Carlingford has very kindly offered to open their doors on Christmas Day for those who are struggling financially to put a dinner on the table or for those who simply have nobody to spend the day with.

Vikram Singh who owns the Sitar Restaurant in Carlingford extended the generous offer last Thursday and wants to spread the word to ensure nobody is left alone locally on Christmas Day. “I opened up my restaurant in Carlingford three years ago and now that I am established in the community I want to give something back to the Continued on Page 2 Vikram Singh

I know what it is like to have no money and since setting up my own business here in Ireland I have always wanted to give something back to the local community for those who are in need. I put out the invitation last Thursday and the response so far has been amazing. I have had calls from people in the community offering to help out on the day in the restaurant and volunteer their services which shows what wonderful people

are living here. I am excited for Christmas Day and I hope that we have many people coming out to us for the afternoon.

“I myself will celebrate Christmas with my family at home after I close the restaurant on Christmas Day. It’s a nice day to celebrate with friends and family and as I said before nobody should be alone on Christmas Day,” added Vikram.

Independent TD Peter Fitzpatrick has promised to raise standards in Louth GAA following his overwhelming victory at Monday night’s convention in Darver.

The Clan na Gael man will succeed now former chairman Des Halpenny thanks to a landslide victory which saw him take 83 of the 129 votes cast way ahead of rivals Declan Byrne and Fra Kieran who received 24 and 22 votes respectively.

Fitzpatrick has been both a player and

manager for the Wee County and now he will try to raise Louth football from the ashes after a barren few years for local Gaels. According to the newly elected chairman there is plenty of work to do in his new role but his immediate priorities will be to build the new county grounds in Dundalk.

Speaking yesterday morning (Tuesday) the Belfry Gardens man insisted that he has no intention of saying goodbye to his political career following confirmation of his new role within Louth GAA on Monday evening.

“Let me categorically state that I will be putting my name forward for the next general election and hopefully continue to serve the people of County Louth. I don’t drink or smoke and I am as fit as I’ve ever been so I believe I can combine the role of Louth County Chairman and TD. “I was absolutely delighted to receive so many votes on Monday evening in Darver and I promised everybody in attendance that I will fight tooth and nail to get Louth back to where I believe they should be. Louth football is a huge passion of mine and I strongly believe we should be doing much better. We are not a Division 3 team and I feel we should be at

least a solid division two team going forward.

“Our development squads need serious work I believe and that is something we will be looking at. You see the work the likes of Monaghan has put in during recent years and you ask yourself why can’t we be doing as well as them.

“They hadn’t won any minor championships in years but that has changed in recent times thanks to lots of hard work put in by their county board. We have been very poor with regards to fundraising over the last ten years also and I believe we also need to be more active with regards to bringing money into the system.

“To my mind the structures in Louth football are all wrong.

Football should be played all year around and there should be opportunities for GAA fans to go to a game every weekend. I told everybody at the meeting in Darver on Monday night to judge me on a yearly basis. I promised them improvements and this time next year I believe we will start to see the start of some very positive things happening for Louth football. I’m a sportsperson who is deeply passionate about not only GAA but soccer

and rugby as well and I am a huge advocate for keeping fit and fighting obesity.

“Obviously the first big item on my agenda is to ensure there are no delays building our new County ground. I am on the committee for that project and I am expecting a positive announcement with regards to a sports capital grant within the next few days. When we get that we can start working on the new stadium early next year and I believe we will have it completed within 12 to 18 months,” Peter Fitzparick revealed Peter.

Dance Kids back on stage with ‘I Believe in Christmas’

The Dance Kids are back once more with their Christmas show ‘I Believe in Christmas’ which takes place on the 29th and 30th of December in An Tàin Arts Centre.

‘I Believe in Christmas’ is jam packed full of all your Christmas favourites as well as an excerpt from ‘Scrooge The Musical’.

The talented dancers will also be performing to many favourites from the hit musical ‘Mary Poppins’, as well as songs from ‘El-

ton John’ and ‘Elf the Musical’ to name just a few that are guaranteed to have audiences of every age dancing and singing along in their seats.

Dundalk’s first 24-hour church streaming service In preparation for its Christmas services, the Redemptorist Community St Joseph’s Redemptorist Monastery has launched a new live streaming service.

Rector and Parish Administrator, Fr. Noel Kehoe, described it as “an exciting new tool in our mission to preach plentiful redemption.

Communication is at the heart of evangelisation and digital technologies offer the possibility to communicate with a worldwide audience.”

“The new webcam will allow family and friends around the world to be part of our worshipping community.

Many people from Dundalk have emigrated or moved to other parts of Ireland or the UK and still feel a connection with the Redemptorist Church. This allows them to bring the local faith community into their homes wherever they are, via a computer, smart phone or tablet.

As a parish, this means that family abroad can

Other Redemptorist Churches in Ireland have had a streaming service for some time. Clonard Monastery, where Fr. Kehoe was previously Rector was one of the first in the country. On Sunday last the parishioners from Cooley and beyond held a fundraiser event in solidarity with women and children who suffer from domestic abuse. The theme was for all males to swap their footwear for high heels. The event “Walk a Mile in Her Shoes’ was fundraising effort for Dundalk’s Women’s Aid. The Pastoral Council would like to thank all who participated in the walk and for all the generous donations made.

Peter continues good run Peter McCaughey has been the form player at Dundalk Golf Club in recent weeks and his run shows no signs of stopping as he led home a field of 88 in Sunday’s 14 Hole Christmas Spirit Singles competition.

McCaughey (20) shot 38pts and beat Niall Sloan (31) on countback as 15 players shots 32pts or better to claim

A concerned Dundalk resident has expressed concern at the state of the pedestrian surface at The Square as the icy conditions struck at the start of the week.

The resident has called on the council to treat the surface with salt during the icy weather to ensure the safety of pedestrians, pointing out that it is extremely dangerous, particularly for older people.

In the run up to Christmas the organisers of the Wee County Double House are calling on individuals and businesses to consider the project when purchasing presents.

Funds will boost strategic development of Dundalk

Local councilor, John McGahon, has welcomed the announcement of funding to support the strategic development of Dundalk following the news that €200,000 is being provided by the Department of Local Government.

“This is really important funding that will assist with the creation of a dedicated senior post for Dundalk and Drogheda within Louth County Council that will specifically focus on the strategic development of both towns,” he said

in reacting to the news of the grant.

“The National Planning Framework (NPF) identifies the need for a focused approach to compact, sequential and sustainable development in this region and these two posts will facilitate the development and implementation of key projects that align with the NPF, the delivery of urban area plans for both towns and, in the case of Drogheda, coordination with Meath County Council on a range of key developmental strategies.

“Dundalk is right there on the frontlines of Brexit and it’s really important that this position will focus on the strategic development of Dundalk given its unique population size and proximity to the border.

“It’s also important to recognise how both of these positions will be able to assist and support the work being carried out by the M1 Corridor for promoting Dundalk and Drogheda as an attractive destination for prospective investment to Europe and

the world,” added Cllr McGahon.

In making this announcement, John Paul Phelan TD, the Minister of State for Local Government and Electoral Reform said: “Dundalk and Drogheda are key regional drivers and there is an opportunity now for the Council to embrace the strategic development opportunities set out in the National Planning Framework.

I am delighted to assist Louth County Council in bringing a focused approach to these opportunities”.

port local children with additional needs and their parents. The group has specialised training to work with children with additional needs and members are from a mixed ethnic backgrounds.

Fiona McKenna from SNAIL thanked all who helped with the event.

“We are very grateful to Louth Leader Partnership for funding this event with special thanks to Omniplex manager Paul Kearney and staff, for their professional, friendly and accommodating service. The positive feedback from the children and parents we received makes our

efforts worthwhile,” she stated.

Student learn benefits of a foreign language Languages Connect welcomed Transition Year students from Louth to the Convention Centre Dublin for their flagship event, #ThinkLanguages. As an awareness raising campaign, facilitated

by Post-Primary Languages Ireland, Languages Connect aims to highlight the personal, social, professional and economic benefits of language learning. Students attending #ThinkLanguages were encouraged to think about the global work opportunities, the wider circle of friends, the richer life experiences and the greater travel opportunities that foreign language skills can offer them.

Students from Ardee Community School and Scoil Ui Mhuiri in Dunleer attended the annual TY event which saw 70 exhibiting organisations, 30 fun languagelearning workshops as well as a talk from keynote speaker and multi-linguist, Hector Ó

hEochagáin, and interpreting demonstrations from seven European Commission interpreters.

Workshops available ranged from French food-tasting, Portuguese with Capoeira and Chinese Calligraphy. #ThinkLanguages gave students the opportunity to experience and understand how learning foreign languages can have a tangible, real-life impact socially, cultural and professionally.

Commenting on the event, Karen Ruddock, Director, Post Primary Languages Ireland, said: “We are active at all of the major student

events throughout the year, so it was great to be able to welcome the TY students from Ardee Community School and Scoil Ui Mhuiri to our own #ThinkLanguages event. TY students are now considering what they will study for their Leaving Cert and beyond. By showing them the benefits that foreign language skills give them in their life and career, we want to encourage them to keep up their foreign languages and maybe even take on another language for the Leaving. #ThinkLanguages was a language class with a difference – it opened student’s

minds and really brought many different aspects of languages to life.”

Recognising the increasing demand for a multilingual workforce, the France Ireland Chamber of Commerce, French TV station, TV5Monde, and the European Parliament among others all took a stand at #ThinkLanguages.

Third level colleges showcased their courses in foreign languages as well as organisations that offer opportunities to students for language exchange.

Part of the purpose of the event was to establish greater links across sectors to support language learning, cultural awareness and to raise awareness of career options and opportunities for studying abroad.

Cuchullian Cycling Club Awards Night

Cuchullian Cycling Club held its end of year awards night in the Spirit Store recently, where the achievements of its members during the 2019 season were honoured. The night was a huge success, thanks to the organisational effort of the social committee. Presiding over the awards were Ray Fedigan of long term event sponsors The Bike Station, alongside Pat O’Shaughnessy.

PJ Hynes was the busiest person on the night taking to the stage twice, first to receive the winner’s cup for the MX MTB league, where he beat out Conor Murphy and Gareth McKee. He was called up again when he was voted as the Off Road Cyclist of the Year, beating off some stiff competition, especially from Maeve Baxter who had had a very successful year on the MTB scene, least of which was winning the club’s ladies hill climb championships.

Francis Lafferty was awarded the Leisure Cyclist of the Year, a notable achievement given that this is easily the biggest section of the club. David Holland was recognised, following his return to racing after a horrific accident, as the club Racing Cyclist of the Year. Mick Sheridan and Yvonne Cummins were awarded the coveted male and female Most Improved Cyclists of the Year.

The female cyclist of the year was jointly awarded to underage sensations Ffionn Dolan and Holly McCaffrey. Despite the late night, two days later Holly was in action to claim the Leinster under 12 cyclo-cross championships. Male Cyclist of the Year was Eoin Holmes.

The Paddy Neary perpetual award was presented by the Neary family to Liam Dolan for winning the Bike Station summer league, ahead of Ardee cyclists

Alan Malone and Tomás McCabe. The Cuchulainn Challenge league went to Barry Haughey, with Andrew Flood in second and a tie for third between Alan Coyle and Jason Boyle.

So much goes into running a club the size of Cuchulainn that it isn’t just about riding your bike. Work behind the scenes was recognised, with Jim Wallace winning the Cuchulainn “Spirit” award. Meanwhile recently retired club secretary Karl Dolan was honoured as the Club Person of the Year and also given honourary life membership.

Finally cheques were presented to SOAD and Autism Service Dogs, from the money raised by the Lap of Louth held in September. The event was the idea of Barry Rogers, who originally organised the event. This year he handed the reins over to Donal Kiernan who ensured another high quality lap of the county.

Heart Foundation Walk

The local Annual Heart Foundation Walk takes place on Friday December 27 from Grange Car Park, Cooley. Venora Hovelt has organised this family-friendly walk for over 15 years. It is a firm favourite with many walkers and non-walkers alike explained Vera who outlined the details of the event.

“This year, we are

revisiting the success of the Molly and Rooskey walking loops, which boast amazing view of the Mournes and pass through hidden tracks and trails.

“Above all the walk helps to banish postChristmas blues, filling the lungs with fresh air,” she added Those interested in taking part can meet at 11.30am in the

car park opposite St James’s Church Grange (eircode A91 EA33) and the walk takes about 2.5 hours, mainly on the flat, but with some slight initial inclines.

Afterwards, relax and enjoy a complementary draw with a bowl of soup in Long’s Pub, around a traditional log fire. Good walking boot/shoes and rain gear are recommended.

Runners or jeans are not suitable. Children aged 6+ welcome but no dogs allowed.

Suggested minimum donation €10 per adult, €25 for a family of two adults and two children.

Motorists and homeowners are being encouraged to be security-aware in the weeks leading up to Christmas to help reduce their risk of a car breakin or home burglary.

With both the shopping and Christmas party seasons in mind, the AA is encouraging people to be careful when leaving their car or home unattended ahead of the Christmas season as opportunistic thieves could be looking to capitalise on security lapses.

The warning comes after a recent survey of over 7,000 motorists by AA Car Insurance found that less than a third of motorists are very likely to take steps to avoid leaving their car unoccupied while shopping this year. 33.19% of those surveyed stated they would avoid leaving their car unoccupied where possible while shopping or when they had Christmas presents in the booth, with a further 15.19% somewhat likely to take this precaution.

“When it comes to the Christmas period, security in the home tends to be on many of our minds but it’s also important that you are taking steps to protect your gifts while you’re shopping and they’re stored in your car,” Conor Faughnan, AA Director of Consumer Affairs stated. “Of course it may not always be possible to avoid leav-

ing your car unoccupied, but there are still things you can do to reduce your risk. Wherever possible park in a secure car park and get into the habit of physically checking the car has locked before you walk away from it.”

The survey also found that almost half of Irish homeowners (48.55%) plan on taking additional precautions to help reduce their risk of a burglary over the Christmas period.

Among the steps recommended by the AA Home Insurance team to protect your home are the use of a burglar alarm, checking all external locks before leaving your home, and leaving a light on when your home in unattended to give the appearance that someone is home.

“Everyone wants to have an enjoyable Christmas, but unfortunately every year our AA Home Insurance team comes across cases of heartless thieves breaking into homes when the owner is out and stealing gifts they have either received or intended to give to people,” Faughnan added. “You may not be able to completely eliminate the risk of a break-in, but you can at least make it tougher for a burglar to enter your home by making sure all potential entry points are locked and secure.

We would also encourage people to think carefully when hiding presents from their family members or children this year as obvious locations, such as a bedroom wardrobe, will be among the first places a burglar will check.”
