In nine days time Jenkinstown native Eve McCrystal and Katie George Dunlevy will attempt to bring down the curtain on their hugely successful paracycling partnership by bringing home a gold medal from Tokyo in the upcoming Paralympic Games. Eve, a member of San Garda Siochána, has formed a magnificent partnership with Katie-George Dunleavy and the duo have have been amongst the most successful Para Athletes ever to have represented Ireland having medalled consistently at World and Paralympic Games since 2014. Katie George Dunlevy is based in Crawley, West Sussex and has a background in rowing, she has a visual impairment. Eve McCrystal is one of Ireland’s best cyclists having won multiple individual titles. In Para-cycling the stoker (Katie George) is the rider with the visual impairment sitting on the back of the bike, with the pilot (Eve) steering the bike. Drug gangs ‘are like The Taliban’ Drug gangs are ‘like the Taliban, destroying communities with fear and gangsterism’, says Sinn Féin TD Ruairí Ó Murchú. The Dundalk TD was speaking after the seizure of an estimated €650,000 worth of ‘benzos’ in Dundalk on Thursday by Gardaí. Last week, it was reported that the Taliban are overrunning Afghanistan again following the withdrawal of US troops. Deputy Ó Murchú said areas ravaged by drugs are ‘like communities in Afghanistan – living in fear of those who want to impose their way as they profit from poisoning society’. Continued on Page 2

Dundalk Brass Band appeal for help to survive
Dundalk Brass Band have made an appeal to the general public to help support them to ensure they can stay together and continue to entertain the people locally for many years to come. The group who receive no government funding are a community not for profit based Brass Band and have been entertaining the masses at various shows and festivals since 1976. However, due to the pandemic the band have been unable to perform or do any fund raising for the past eighteen months and because of that they are in dire need of assistance given the fact that bills such as insurance, rent, utility cost and maintenance
have continued to come in. As a result the groups finances have been crippled and according to committee member and first trombone player Brendan McCourt they are relying on help from the public to get them through this tough period. “I’ve been a member of Dundalk Brass Band since 1981 and at present there are about fourteen full-time players in the band. We used to get council funding but unfortunately in their wisdom the local authority decided to cut that funding four years ago. We rely on fundraising, donations and playing concerts to keep our heads above water but unfortunately due to the pandemic we have not been
able to play or fundraise for the past eighteen months. “The demographic of our group is mainly in the bracket of people who are drawing pensions so it has been tough to keep in contact using the likes of Zoom etc as many of our members wouldn’t be used to using that technology. A few of us have participated in Bands of Ireland which was a call out to brass bands to put together a piece and join in a special St. Patrick’s Festival virtual performance but we haven’t played together in eighteen months and it has been tough. “Our members have been going to our bandroom in the CYMS hall in Jocelyn St. maybe four or five people at a
time and well spread out to get some practice in as they need to keep their lip in trim. For somebody playing the likes of the trombone or trumpet their lip is a muscle that they need to keep exercised. “The band doesn’t have a huge amount of funds and unfortunately the little we do have has been all but obliterated by the bills coming through our door over the last number of months. Our only funding is from playing gigs and from discretionary donations we have received from time to time from the likes of councillors Maeve Yore, Conor Keelan and Mark Dearey when he was sitting. “We are hopeful that when things begin to open up over
the next few months we can finally all practice in the same room together but for now the focus is on fundraising and making sure we have a band to come back to. We would ask people to keep us in mind when music does return. We can play for people as full brass band or a smaller ensemble and we have a huge songbook and plenty of arrangements that people can choose from. Meanwhile I would ask people to help out if they can by supporting our gofundme page,” urged Brendan. Eve McCrystal going for gold in Tokyo
From Page 1 duo have improved each year and along the way have picked up a number of world titles including double gold in both Italy and South Africa over the last couple of years as well as gold (time trial) and silver (road race) in the paralympics in Rio back in 2016. 2019 was highly productive for the duo with the pairing winning Gold and Silver at the Road World Championships in Emmen in January and they followed up in 2021 with two silvers just one month ago.According to Eve the pair are excited and ready to challenge for gold but more than that they are proud of the work they have put in to get to this point. “There’s been a lot

I have two kids at home and I want to make them proud too,” explained Eve. “We have never trained as hard as we have for these championships and Katie actually moved into my house for a few months during the worst of lockdown to avoid the quarantine rules which would have hampered our training. “It’s been a very busy
year for us and the last few months have been especially tough as I’ve had to travel abroad for training camps due to the fact that Ireland does not have a velodrome. We spent a couple of weeks in Majorca training with the Irish team before I got to get home for a week and then it was back on the plane again to Portugal where we have been training six days a week for the past couple of weeks. “Of course we are aiming to bring home
Drug gangs ‘are like Taliban’
From page 1 He said: ‘It is not an exaggeration to say that drugs gangs operating in Louth, and around the State, are like the Taliban - preying on the defenceless, gaining a foothold in communities and utterly focused on their own twisted ethos of making money while not giving a damn about who they destroy’. He praised the Gardaí for the ‘successful operation which takes a massive amount of pills off the streets’ but added that the ‘huge haul’ ‘speaks to the enormous issue facing communities’. He said: ‘I have been in touch with families who are facing drug debt intimidation and feel they have nowhere to turn because of the threat they feel from drug-dealing gangsters. ‘There is no question that an increasing number of people in Dundalk are affected by the drugs scourge – whether that is on a micro level in their own families, or on a macro level, living beside dysfunctional drug users, dealers or party houses.
‘I have, along with my colleague, Mark Ward TD, brought the Proceeds of Crime Bill to second stage, where we have proposed that cash and assets seized from dealers are reinvested into communities ravaged by drugs. ‘The recent seizure in Dundalk has happened against the backdrop of the ongoing issue of the Family Addiction Support Network (FASN) struggling to get funding for the vital work it does with families affected by addiction. ‘The Drogheda Implementation Plan, which follows the Guerin Report, has the potential to provide a template for communities around the State struggling with similar issues. ‘The government has promised a Citizens’ Assembly on drugs, but there is still no date. It is long past time that a proper strategy, involving the whole of government, is devised to address all aspects of the problem including youth justice, funding for addiction and family support services and resourcing the Gardaí to crack down on gangs’.
gold but we honestly don’t feel any pressure at all to deliver that. We are a very tight unit and we know that we have done everything in our power to be in the best shape we possibly can. If there is somebody that is better than us in Tokyo that is fine. The biggest thing for us is that we both know we didn’t take any shortcuts and that we’ve given ourselves the best chance to deliver on our potential. “It is our last Paralympic games so we want to go out on a high and more than that we want to really enjoy the
experience. It’s a huge deal being able to represent your country at an international games
and we fully intend to embrace it all and take everything in,” promised Eve.

Grace opens up on surrogacy plan to help others
Dundalk Leader 18th August 2021
A DUNDALK preschool teacher has spoken about her painful journey to surrogacy in a bid to help others in a similar situation. Grace McGeary, aged 34, from Bothar na Feirme on the Blackrock Road is a mother to Kayla, 17, Sean, 11, and Danan who sadly passed away and would have been five in June. “When I had Danan five years ago I was admitted to hospital with pre-eclampsia. I lost a lot of blood and ended up in a coma for eight days,” she said. “It was an horrific experience. I’m very lucky to be alive but I had to have a hysterectomy. I wanted to have a big family - five or six kids – so it was devastating. “The doctors told me I still had my ovaries so I could produce my own eggs, I just couldn’t carry a child.” Grace added: “I started getting into groups and got speaking to a few women about different surro-
Grace McGeary. gacy clinics. I settled on a clinic in Ukraine. “No-one speaks about surrogacy here in Ireland unfortunately. Myself and my partner, Liam Campbell, did IVF to get embryos. “We just have to get married now as it’s a requirement in Ukraine for surro-
gacy. We haven’t got a date yet because of Covid-19 but I’m hoping to get married in November or December.” She continued: “Once we have a marriage certificate we can choose a surrogate. We’re going to put in two embryos. It might result in a twin preg-
nancy but the way we see it is the more kids the better. I just love children. “It’s very exciting now. We’ve been stressing and worrying about it for five years but I’m ready to enjoy the process now. “If it was legal in Ireland, it would be a lot easier, a lot less stressful and a lot cheaper in terms of flights and accommodation.” Grace explained that the cost of surrogacy can range anywhere between €25,000 up to €85,000 in Ukraine. In the United States it could cost around $135,000. “I’ve decided I’d like to have total contact with the surrogate so we will visit at the three month and sixmonths scans,” she said. “It’s unlikely she will speak English so we will communicate through a translator. I decided to share my story because so many people don’t know about surrogacy and I’d like to help others.”

It is something that is shared by all of us and continually evolving. In this spirit, National Heritage Week is an opportunity to come together and rally around Ireland’s unique heritage. “This year’s National Heritage Week offers something for every taste and interest, whether that is natural landscapes, wildlife and habitats, buildings and monuments, or customs and practices
like art, sport and music. I encourage people across Ireland to visit the National Heritage Week website and explore projects that might interest them, or find a local event to participate in. National Heritage Week is a special opportunity to reach out and connect with each other through Ireland’s wonderful, precious heritage.” Two themed days will take place during National Heritage Week. On Wednesday, 18th August, Wild Child Day encourages children and families to explore the heritage in their locality. On Sunday, 22nd August, the Heritage Council and the Local Authority Waters Programme invite people to explore National Heritage Week projects that celebrate water and our connections with it. People interested in attending in-person events are advised to consult the individual event page on the National Heritage Week website, or contact event organisers for full details of registration and attendance, which is subject to the prevailing public health and events guidelines. The Italian inspired food menu boasts delicious starters such as Italian BBQ ribs, Caprece Salad, Buffalo Chicken Wings and Bruchettas while the main courses include Pasta Carbonara, 12oz steak, Classic Chicken/Beef burgers, fish of the day and much more. The pub also sell its own signature lager called ‘The Tipsy Bar Brew’ which has been receiving very favourable reviews since its launch. The bar was originally opened in Church Street in December 2019 by Lordship native Colin O’Neill but the premises had barely opened their doors when the Coronavirus pandemic forced its closure as Ireland went into lockdown. According to Colin it was tough for him and his six staff to see the doors close having only just got up and running but he used the time away to come up with ideas to improve the pub for when they were allowed to reopen. “It was a blow having to close our doors so quickly after opening but

rather than feel sorry for ourselves we went to work on making the place better and with that in mind we installed a state of the art kitchen so we could offer customers food as well as drink in the bar. It was always the long-term plan to have the ability to offer food but I suppose that plan was accelerated by the pandemic,” explains Colin. “There is a lot of great work being done down in this end of town with the St Nicholas Quarter Regeneration Project and we want to be part of the positive changes down here in Church St. and with that in mind we are delighted that we are the first gastro pub down this end of town. There is so much potential
down here and we want to add to the experience of the area. “We love to support local businesses and we source our food locally from McCormacks Butchers in town and Gus Kelly’s butchers in Louth Village. We also buy all of the fruit for our delicious cocktails in Country Fresh just around the corner from us on Patrick Street. “We have a staff of six here in the pub and when the customer comes in they will be brought to a table by the waitress and provided with table service for the evening. We want our customers to come in and enjoy a drink, food or both in a friendly, relaxed and comfortable environment and we look forward to seeing
faces old and new walk through our doors. We are open now and look forward to welcoming you into our newly renovated pub and we are sure you will enjoy spending an evening in Dundalk’s newest Cocktail Bar and Restaurant,” added Colin. “We’ve put a lot of hard work in to get to where we are today and it wouldn’t have been possible without the help of many good people. I would like to thank, McCormacks Butchers, Country Fresh, Ma Bradys, Tommy Larkin, Astec Dos, Johnny Halpenny, John Mooney Painting, Rogers Accountancy, Halpenny Electrical, Beer Chill, Gus Kelly and Padraig O’Neill,” he concluded.

Tourism potential of Faughart Graveyard
Fine Gael councillor John Reilly says he is determined to promote Faughart graveyard as a tourist attraction and make the area more accessible to people looking to find out about the areas great history. The Kilcurry based councillor has his own ancestry buried in the graveyard and believes the area has tourist potential due to its history. “Tourists complain about not being able to find the area and when they arrive, they are met with no information about the rich heritage and historical significance of this graveyard. Faughart is a significant location, being one of the most important heritage sites in Louth. Located north of Dundalk and south of Moyry Pass, Faughart is an early Christian ruins and shrine site.,” explained John. “The whole Faughart area has strong historical values, with a long tradition as the birthplace of one of Ireland’s most well-known saints of the early medieval period - Saint Brigid. Veneration of the saint has continued to be an
Cllr John Reilly at Faughart Graveyard. important aspect of the graveyard to the present day and has resulted in the creation of a set of practices in the form of the holy well and penitential stations. Faughart is also strongly associated with the death of Edward Bruce. “The Hill of Faughart is one of nine sacred sites in Louth and consists of ruins of a small medieval church along with a bullaun stone, pillar, saints’ bed and Holy Well - all dedicated to St Brigid with St Brigid’s Shrine nearby. This array of monuments seems to have changed little
since they were first recorded in 1748. The hill is ranked 5 for tourism in Louth with beautiful scenery, however, a lack of signage and information boards is a common complaint. “Over the last 12 months with the help of Senator John McGahon’s office, extensive research has been done on the graveyard. Due to the age of the graveyard, it is inconclusive as to which religious group controls it. We do know that it was in control by Church of Ireland until the 1850s and was in use by Catholic Church
also. I have spoken to the two main churches in Armagh and they are happy to have an ecumenical service when life returns to normal at Faughart graveyard. It is a hidden gem in north county Louth that I would encourage people to visit. “The views from Faughart hill are breathtaking, looking across the Cooley mountains and Slieve Gullion and the plains of mid Louth. It is important to mention that a tourist to the site had to find information about the relevance and significance of the graveyard from online sources. This indicates that information boards would provide an extremely useful addition to Faughart graveyard. The main reasoning for this is because Faughart has a rich historical background and retains a number of archaeological monuments; some are not immediately obvious to any visitors to the site. The incorporation of these proposals will greatly enhance visitor appreciation and awareness of the significance of Faughart,” noted John.

Dundalk Institute of Technology Student Union President Christopher O’Neill has said he’s excited to welcome back students to campus next month. “I’m sure students are equally as excited to be coming back on campus for the first time in over a year,” he said. “Third level students were completely left in the dark last year in regards to their studies, and the shift to the online learning experience has been tough, so to be finally returning to campus is a relief for us all, and we’re very excited for little bits of normality again. “Us in the Students’ union will work alongside the college as closely as possible to ensure a safe transition back to campus for all our students.” Plans to reopen DkIT campus are already underway, with more specific information being made available in the coming weeks, according to a DkIT spokesperson. Christopher O’Neill, DKIT President.
