Two Dundalk athletes turned in the performance of their lives as Ireland’s relay team made history on Saturday afternoon when they stormed to a silver medal at the U20 World Championships in Finland.

The quartet set a new national record of 43.90 with St Gerard’s athlete Patience Jumbo Gula anchoring the team to second place narrowly behind the Germans. Remarkably, a second local athlete was also part of the team with Blackrock AC’s Gina Akpe Moses running the second leg of the race.

Gina who was born in Lagos moved to Dundalk with her family at a young age and proceeded to join St Gerard’s Athletics Club where she was coached

by Michael O’Connor. She then moved to Blackrock AC before making the decision to move to Birmingham with her family in 2014 to avail of the facilities.

She still runs for Blackrock AC

The recent warm spell has no doubt been very enjoyable for those of us fortunate enough to spend a bit of time outdoors but the unusually high temperatures have also ensured the local fire services have been very busy over the last number of weeks.

There has been a large increase in the number of emergency incidents attended by Louth Fire Service during the recent and continuing hot spell. From 23rd June to 1st July, Dundalk Fire Brigade attended 45 callouts, mainly grass fires, gorse fires and rubbish fires.

Dundalk Institute of Technology (DkIT) will be running a suite of new upskilling courses for the academic year 2018-2019 as part of the new Springboard+ 2018 initiative recently announced

by Minister for Education and Skills, Richard Bruton and Minister of State for Training, Skills and Innovation John Halligan.

As part of the initiative, DkIT is offering 124 places on a variety of part-time Springboard+ courses to applicants who qualify under the government scheme. This marks an increase on 80% compared to available Springboard places last year. The upskilling and reskilling courses are free for the unemployed and for homemakers while the employed can avail of a 90% discount across our suite of programmes.

DkIT is deeply committed to the provision of lifelong learning and upskilling opportunities for people living in the North Leinster and South Ulster region. Mary Scanlon, secretary of Blackrock Athletics Club was understandably ecstatic following Gina’s performances at the World Championships.

“We are all absolutely delighted for Gina and so proud

of her. She is such a lovely girl and so humble and all her success is very well deserved. She joined us from St Gerard’s and we could see immediately what a huge talent she was and under the guidance of coach Brian Marsh she progressed further again.

“She is such a hard worker and so dedicated. She is planning to take part in the Nationals later this year where she will be wearing the Blackrock AC vest,” stated Mary.

Patience Jumbo Gula’s final leg run was hugely impressive as the 16-year old belied her age with a mature performance down the straight.

Back home in Dundalk Patience’s family were glued to the TV set cheering her on with father Paul delighted to see his daughter get a reward for all her hard work.

“We are all so proud of Patience. We know how hard she works and this is the culmination of that work. She has been

training four, five six days a week sometimes and it is not by accident that she is getting these results. .

“I used to run myself when I was a young man and that’s probably where Patience got her love for running.

“We knew from a young age that she had talent and it’s been great to see her improve over the years. She will come home and rest for a while before making plans on where to run for the rest of the year,” noted Paul.

White Paper is starting point for Brexit negotiations - Breathnach

Fianna Fáil TD for Louth and East Meath Declan Breathnach says the publication of the British government’s White Paper on Brexit is a starting point for meaningful negotiations with the EU. While welcoming the publication of the paper, Deputy Breathnach warned that a lot of work remains ahead.

“We need to secure the best outcome for Ireland and the least damaging Brexit possible. From a NorthSouth and East-West perspective Ireland is particularly exposed to the impact of Brexit more so than any other EU Member State. It poses significant risks to Ireland’s peace and economic prosperity”, said Deputy Breathnach.

“Fianna Fáil hopes that a no-deal scenario can be avoided, but the

government must be prepared for all eventualities. It is imperative that Ministers move on from talking about contingency planning to developing concrete strategies in place to cover all possible scenarios. We must work with every member State to ensure we secure the best Brexit deal possible for Ireland, the EU and the UK. “The White Paper, which runs to 104 pages, makes only one reference to the backstop, claiming that a customs partnership will allow the UK to maintain frictionless trade with the EU, avoiding a hard border on the island of Ireland. The document doesn’t say anything new on how to resolve the Irish border question, which has held up progress in the negotiations. This is far from

certain, and an explicit reference to a backstop must be made in the final document to ensure that there can be no possibility of a hard border between North and South.

“There can be no backtracking on this issue. The scenes witnessed over the past few nights in Northern Ireland once again shine a light on the fragility of peace on this island. We must ensure that the Good Friday Agreement is safeguarded and upheld in full. Furthermore, there can be no time limit set on any backstop that is agreed.

“Our businesses, farmers and SME’s need more support and safeguards in place so that whatever comes to pass they are prepared and insulated from the worst effects of Brexit”.

Residents keen for proposed alcohol bye-laws to be enacted

Carlingford Residents Association were the only person or group to make a submission in relation to the newly proposed intoxicating Liquor Bye-Laws which are to be introduced by Louth County Council. In their submission they urged Louth County Council to enact the newly proposed bye-laws as soon as possible to help combat public disorder in the village.

Bye-Laws covering the consumption of alcohol in public

places had previously been split into four to cover Dundalk, Drogheda, Ardee and the rest of the county. However, a new draft bye-law will consolidate these four into one single enactment. During a public consultation period, submissions were invited with regards to the draft published and one was set in from Carlingford Residents outlining the problems the village has had with regards to the public consumption of alcohol on their streets.

Kieran McCourt, acting chairman for the Carlingford Residents Association outlined the difficulties the village has faced in relation to the number of public disorder offences, excessive drinking and offensive behaviour which has been commonplace in recent years.

“It is a matter of public record that large numbers of Gardaí have been required in recent years to seize alcohol from passengers of minibuses coming into Carlingford from

a northern direction. In spite of these efforts incidents of excessive drinking, offensive behaviour and public disorder have still occurred and been widely publicised.

“We attach photographs showing Gardaí- including the Armed Response Unit- called out to disturbances in the village. Planters overturned, abandoned alcohol and accompanying rubbish, Tidy Towns bins thrown into Carlingford Lough, public urination and

forts could greatly reduce the problem at Easter and other holidays, allowing better use of garda resources, improve the lives of Carlingford residents and business people as well as improving the experience of Carlingford for visitors.

“We wish to express our strong support for the new proposed bye-laws and urge that they be adopted as soon as possible to meet a pressing and widely reported public need,” concluded the letter.

Fundraisers for Cú Chulainn Blood Bikes

Cú Chulainn Blood Bikes are holding two very important fundraisers in Dundalk next week to raise money for the vital service which relieves pressure on the already strained HSE and NHS services.

Cú Chulainn Blood Bikes - CCBB was formed on April 1 to provide a free ‘not-forprofit’ volunteer motorcycle transportation service for the swift and safe pick-up and delivery of urgently needed Blood, Blood Products, Human Tissue, Patient Files / X - Rays and Infant Milk.

This is mainly between local Health Service Executive (HSE) hospitals in the North-Eastern Region of Ireland including Our Lady’s Hospital, Drogheda, County Louth; Cavan General Hospital, County Cavan; Navan General Hospital, County Meath; Louth County Hospital,

Dundalk Golf Club prepare for Barton Cup showdown D Having qualified for the Leinster Finals in both of Irish golf’s premier interclub competitions, Dundalk Golf Club gets its initial opportunity to land a first senior pennant at Mount Wolseley this weekend.

They will play in the Leinster finals of the Senior Cup in August in Mount Juliet but this Friday and Saturday, all eyes will be on the Co Carlow town of Tullow when Mount Wolseley hosts the eight Leinster teams still standing in the

Barton Shield. Corrstown, Kilkenny, Elm Park, Tullamore, Enniscorthy, Portmarnock and Dun Laoghaire stand between Dundalk and history.

Dundalk will face Dublin club, Corrstown, in their quarter-final on Friday morning with the winners meeting either Kilkenny or Elm Park in the semi-final that afternoon. The final is scheduled for Saturday morning at 10am.

This is the fifth time Dundalk have qualified for the

provincial decider in the Barton Shield and managers Alan McCabe and John Conlon have left no stone unturned in ensuring that the club’s senior squad are as well prepared as possible for what lies ahead this week.

The group scooped the award for its short film “Expectations Up in Smoke” which was showcased at the recent event in the Helix in Dublin. Sonia McKeown from Dundalk Youth Centre also took home the award for Best Actress in the competition.

Over 350 young people from 45 youth and community groups came together to showcase their anti-tobacco films and projects which they created to contribute towards establishing Ireland’s first smoke-free generation.

While smoking rates have declined in recent years, a new report published by the HSE and Healthy Ireland re-

vealed that 16% of children aged nine or older have smoked cigarettes in their lifetime and 6% are classified as current smokers. Of those who smoke, one in two experience irritability or bad temper, one in three reported ‘feeling low’ and one in three had difficulties in getting to sleep.

In addition, schoolchildren who smoke are 12 times more likely to have consumed alcohol in the last month and 39 times more likely to have consumed cannabis in the last month.

Donal Buggy, Head of Services at the Irish Cancer Society said: “Thankfully, smoking rates have declined but there’s still a lot more work to do.

Following their excellent start to their 2018 National League campaign in Belfast in June, the County Louth senior men’s and women’s track and field teams did not disappoint in their second round fixture at the Morton Stadium in Santry, Dublin, on Sunday, 8 July.

The women’s team, who had only been promoted to the Premier Division this year following their second place finish in Division One in 2017, were particularly impressive this time, as they topped the points table among the seven teams competing in their group in Dublin. The men’s team also held their own in a very competitive group of six teams in Division One. Most importantly, both teams qualified for next month’s final in Tullamore by finishing among the top eight teams overall – the women were ranked sixth and the

men seventh after the two qualifying rounds.

In both cases they were comfortably ahead of the teams ranked ninth and lower, for whom the 2018 National League is now at an end.

This is a particularly impressive achievement by the women’s team, who have generally plied their trade in Division One. In their only previous campaign in the top tier – back in 2014 – they finished

tenth overall after the first two rounds and hence did not advance to the final. The men’s team have been regular finalists in Division One in recent years, but have yet to earn promotion to the top flight.

Disqualified for driving without insurance A man who pleaded guilty to driving without insurance was disqualified for ten years at Dundalk District Court.

William Duffy (34) of 5 Park Mews, Coulter Place, Dundalk, was charged after being stopped by Gardai at Hackballscross on September 1 last year. Solicitor Barry Callan stated that his client had been charged as owner of the vehicle as opposed to being the driver.

Judge John Coughlan heard that the defendant had a previous disqualification as he imposed the ten-year ban. He adjourned the case to December 5 for a Probation Report and stated that he would consider Community Service in lieu of five months in prison.

Mr Duffy, who also had an address at Knockagh, Hackballscross, also faced charges of possession of drugs when he was stopped at the Inner Relief Road on April 30 last year.

Mr Callan stated that his client had been transporting a relation who left €30 worth of methadone in the car.

Cuchulainn Cycling Club’s underage section has continued to show impressive growth and had six members racing again on Friday last in Lurgan Park, County Antrim.

In the under 10s race Michael O`Rourke was the Cuchulainn entrant and had a great race.

Moving to the under 12s

the club had four entrants with Shane Meegan, Tiernan O`Shaughnessey, Ffionn Dolan and Grace O`Rourke. In the end Ffionn was narrowly beaten to be second girl. In the under 12s race Rhiannon Dolan had a great start and led for the first three laps before finally finishing sixth and first

girl home.

The latest round of the Bike Station league was an epic 52km race around Ravensdale that finished at the Long Woman’s Grave, which had been christened the “Cuchulainn Stage”.

By the start of the climb to the Long Woman’s Grave, all

the groups had come together on the road. Ardee cyclist Tomás McCabe was strongest having escaped on the climb with Newry Wheeler’s Alan Bingham, whom he beat in the sprint for the win. Third place went to Macdara O`Graham, 20 seconds behind the leading duo.

O’Sullivan held off the challenge of five players who finished a shot behind him after posting three-under totals of 69 with Len Mullins (16) taking second overall on countback.

The other four had to settle for category prizes with Billy

Cairns (6) taking Category 1 from Conor McCaughey (6) while Patsy Arrowsmith won Category 2 after edging out Mark Browne (13) on countback.

Caolan Rafferty was part

of the Irish team that finished 10th at the European Team Championships in Germany at the weekend. He shot rounds of 72 and 73 as Ireland failed to qualify for the top flight, missing out by one shot to Finland for the eighth and last spot.

Ironically, Finland went on to win the championship.

Ireland then beat Serbia and Iceland to reach the Flight B final with Rafferty and Robin Dawson teaming up as a foursomes pairing to win

both their matches. Ireland, however, were beaten 3-2 by Netherlands in the play-off for ninth and tenth spot with Rafferty and Dawson beaten on the 19th.

As part of the ongoing efforts to support Juvenile Golf, the popular Last Person Standing competition will be recommencing in August when the English Premiership season begins.

Entries are now being accepted at the bar and cost €10 per person.

Dundalk Brass Band are holding a recital in St Helena Park on Sunday July 22.

The event will commence at 3pm and will last for approximately an hour.

The recital proved to be a big hit when it was staged last year.

It is aimed to make this free event a family fun day and all are invited to attend including, grandparents, parents and children.

The recent warm spell has no doubt been very enjoyable for those of us fortunate enough to spend a bit of time outdoors but the unusually high temperatures have also ensured the local fire services have been very busy over the last number of weeks.

There has been a large increase in the number of emergency incidents attended by Louth Fire Service during the recent and continuing hot spell.

From 23rd June to 1st July, Dundalk Fire Brigade attended 45 callouts, mainly grass fires, gorse fires and rubbish fires.

Carlingford Fire Brigade attended mainly small grass and rubbish fires, but thankfully there were no large gorse fires in the Cooley Mountains. There would however be concern

about this in the event of the current dry spell continuing. Most of these fires appear to be deliberate and would delay the fire service response to simultaneous life risk incidents, e.g. house fires.

Meanwhile the hot weather has also had an adverse effect on the local farming community with Louth IFA Chairman Gerry Melia warning that feeding stocks are extremely low and

farmers are praying for some much-needed rain over the next week or so.

“I know everybody loves the warm weather and being out in the sun but for farmers around the country this current dry spell has been a disaster. We are praying for plenty of rain this week as feeding stocks are dangerously low. There is no growth at all at the moment and the grass is just being burnt

up. I know that some farmers are feeding their animals silage which they normally wouldn’t use until November.

Some farmers also have wells but these are beginning to dry up and they’ve had to connect to the mains which is also an issue.

At this stage we are just hoping for rain and praying that this drought doesn’t last much longer,” stressed Gerry.

Joseph Vrdadi (52) of 8 Riverside Drive, Red Barns Road, Dundalk was disqualified for four years after being convicted of driving without insurance for a second time.

Dundalk District Court heard that the defendant was stopped at a checkpoint on the Point Road on July 17 last year. He had displayed a tax disc for a different car that was expired, and failed to produce his insurance certificate at a designated Garda station.

Judge John Coughlan heard that Mr Vrdadi had a previous conviction for no insurance as he imposed the ban along with a €100 fine.

It’s a very exciting time for basketball players in the North East who travelled to Spain last week to represent their region at an international basketball tournament, as part of the North East Basketball Board’s (NEBB)’s development programme.

The U16 and U18 Girls and Boys North East Knights squads travelled to the Costa Brava in Spain and participated in the EUROBASKET BASKET-

BALL FESTIVAL 2018 along with teams from across Europe. Not only did they compete but won all four categories U16 Boys u16 Girls u18 Boys and U18 Girls Becoming the first teams to do so in its 25 years history.

It’s the end of an era in Park Street

It’s the end of an era for Park Street, as Kevin and Mary Callan announced their retirement and sale of the family run business, Callan’s Off-Licence in late 2018. Callan’s was founded by Kevin’s father Hugh in 1941 when, at the age of just 24, he bought a bar and grocery business at 40 Park Street.

That business has now operated continuously for 47 years across three generations.

When Hugh opened the premises it was in the middle of World War II when food and other commodities were

scarce. Through hard work and long hours, Hugh, with the help of his wife, Kathleen successfully established a thriving business.

Hugh retired from the business in 1989 and Kevin and Mary took over the reins. They oversaw a period of significant expansion, when in 1993 the opportunity came to purchase the premises next door. This expansion allowed Callan’s to cater for ever changing and more diverse tastes. This hard work and desire to offer improved choice to their customers was

recognised when Callan’s was named the Leinster Off-licence of the year, by the National Off-licence Association.

The third generation of Callan’s, Niall, has developed a successful on-line offering at irishhampers.ie. Indeed, Niall’s influence can be seen in-store with Callan’s craft beer range with over 300 beers in stock.

While it’s certainly an emotional time, Kevin and Mary feel now is the right time to take that step back to enjoy a busy and active retirement with their family Niall, Padraic

and Cathriona. Life will certainly be different without their seven-day week vocation but they are looking forward to this exciting chapter in their lives.

Seán Kyne TD, the Minister of State for Community Development, Natural Resources and Digital Development launched the national Summer Stars Children’s Reading Adventure today in Oranmore Library, Co. Galway.

Summer Stars is the national reading programme for children taking place in all 330 public libraries throughout the country this summer. A free initiative, it continues to grow in popularity each year with over 65,000

children expected to participate in 2018.

Mary Stuart, Head of Libraries Development, LGMA, noted “With the school holidays now underway, the summer months provide an ideal opportunity for children to take time to find books they really enjoy and experience reading as an activity which is fun and a source of entertainment.”

Access to books and reading for pleasure is well known to have many important long-term

benefits. Children who develop an interest in reading have been found to have greater selfesteem and well-being, greater creativity, better social and health outcomes, and an overall better quality of life as they get older.

Friendly rivalry as fans enjoy World Cup Final

There may have been no Irish involvement in this year’s World Cup but there were plenty of Croats and French football fans on the edge of their seats in pubs around town on Sunday afternoon.

The Vinegar Man’s on Park Street in particular had plenty of Croatian and French fans on their premises as the World Cup in Russia ended on Sunday with a final between the two countries.

At the end of the game it was the French fans who were still singing as Les Bleus won a thrilling

contest 4-2. Amongst those who were celebrating after the game were Thierry and Anne Sauvin along with their daughter Leonie.

The trio, who hail from Brest in Britanny, are currently in Dundalk on a fishing holiday but made sure they were sitting down to watch their heroes attempt to win a second world cup having won their first back in 1998.

According to Thierry the atmosphere in the pub was fantastic.

“It was a really enjoyable afternoon especially given the fact that France won. There were actually more Croatian fans than French in the pub but thankfully

we were still singing in the end.

They played really well and did the whole country proud,” stated Thierry.

Leonie was also very happy seeing her national team lift the World Cup and spoke about the parties that are currently happening in the streets back home.

“My friends are sending me videos from back home and there are parties in the streets and people dancing everywhere. It was great to watch the game here in Ireland but looking at the videos it would have been great to have been back home for the celebrations,” added Leonie.

A few years ago in the UK, a section of the M25 – London’s equivalent to the M50 – had to be closed because the surface was unsafe. Predictably it caused chaos.

Closer to home, we have had reports into AA Roadwatch over the last couple of weeks of road surfaces becoming extremely dangerous, and some roads have had to close.

It may seem crazy that our roads can let us down like this. It has been hot of course but there are roads in warmer countries that get this all the time without disintegrating and motorists have been asking us how on earth it could happen.

It is a bit like the reverse of the problem that we had during the Storm Emma earlier in the year.

Irish roads, especially secondary roads, took damage that is still not

fully repaired. Again, those low temperatures do not cause problems in Norway so why here?

The answer is that roads are built within ‘normal’ design parameters that will vary from country to country. Ours

have to deal with much more rainfall but much less heat than a road in Nevada for example.

We hit 32 degrees recently but it only gets that hot for a few days every 20 years if we are lucky. You can build roads that can

cope with those temperatures using special polymers and binding agents in the top layer of tarmac but it is expensive.

It is not really possible or sensible to overengineer a road to such an extent that huge cost

is incurred making it proof against problems that might not arise more than two or three times in a century.

The road surface itself can be as much as 20 degrees hotter than the air temperature which

is normally measured in the shade and above the ground. If you are curious you can have a look at the road temperatures map on the TII website.

Their excellent system of thermal mapping was put in place with winter ice and gritting in mind, but we have seen temperatures nearing 50 degrees in the heatwave.

When it gets as hot as that the tar on a road will start to behave like molasses. As traffic uses it the road will start to develop ridges and ruts like a mud track. For the unsuspecting driver, this means that you can hit a bad patch without warning. Braking and steering will be affected, and for those on motorbikes it is extremely dangerous.

In some areas, roads have been treated with grit or gravel. For the driver, the safety advice is something that we are

all familiar with: slow down. Reducing speed and staying clear of the car in front is the only effective counter-measure, and any problem will be magnified if you are driving too fast.

Finally, another word of warning. In the Mediterranean heatwave of 2012, a huge forest fire took hold on the French/ Spanish border north of Barcelona. 32,000 acres were destroyed, four people died and 100 were injured. The hugely busy AP7 motorway was essentially destroyed.

It is suspected that the disaster could well have been caused by a driver flicking a cigarette from the car window. With Ireland currently under a status red fire alert and our emergency services already dealing with fires across the country, now is the time to be extra cautious.

AA’s electric vehicle mobile charging unit first in europe AA Rescue has today unveiled a new mobile charging unit for electric vehicles, with the organisation highlighting that it expects the number of electric cars on Irish roads to climb quickly in the coming years.

In response to the growth of electric vehicle use in Ireland, the breakdown assistance provider partnered with Australian company Club Logistics Solutions to develop a mobile charging solution capable of addressing concerns of motorists worried about potentially running out of power in an electric vehicle. The first of their kind in Europe, the mobile charging units are powered directly by the AA Rescue van as opposed to a separate generator, minimising any emissions produced during usage.

Commenting on the unveiling Conor Faughnan, AA Director of Consumer Affairs stated: “Our AA Rescue team have a long and proud history of going above and beyond to meet the needs of broken down motorists across the country, and the purchase of these mobile charging units is the next step on that journey.

The unveiling of this unit has been a long-time in the making as we first started to research and seek out mobile charging units in 2011. In that time electric cars have evolved significantly and along the way we’ve seen a simi-

lar evolution in charging and emergency assistance options for EVs. Of all the mobile units we have seen this is by far the most impressive, easily deployed and environmentally friendly options.

“This is a huge step forward for electric vehicle owners in Ireland and a significant innovation for our AA Rescue team as they continue to meet the demands of our members. We know from research that we’ve undertaken in the past that the fear of running out of power is a major concern of Irish motorists when it comes to going electric and we hope that knowing this solution exists will help some people ditch petrol and diesel powered cars.”

The mobile charging units are designed to quickly provide an

electric car which has run out of charge with enough power for the driver to continue to their journey. On average, the AA will be able to provide an electric vehicle with approximately 15% of battery charge in just 20 minutes, allowing the motorist to then proceed to the nearest charging point.

“Petrol and diesel cars will in time become a thing of the past and we expect, particularly in the next few years, to see a rapid growth in the number of electric cars in Ireland,” Faughnan added. “With each passing year the number of electric cars on Irish roads only continues to increase and it’s important that investment in the necessary infrastructure to support this technology meets the growing need.”

Behaviour on roads worsening according to motorists A majority of motorists believe that driver behaviour in Ireland has worsened in recent years, according to recent research from AA Ireland.

In response to a survey of over 4,000 Irish motorists undertaken

by AA Car Insurance, 31.20% of respondents strongly agreed that motorist behaviour had worsened in the last few years. Meanwhile, a further 35.21% of those surveyed partially agreed that this was the case, with just 2.90% of respondents strongly disagreeing with the claim that driver behaviour had worsened.

“In recent years we have seen traffic levels return to Celtic Tiger levels and one unfortunate consequence of that does appear to have been that more motorists are experiencing incidents of bad behaviour on the part of other drivers. In many ways higher traffic volumes and increased road rage incidents tend to go hand in hand but there’s certainly no excuse for poor behaviour on our roads, not only is it inconsiderate but it can be dangerous and increase the risk of an incident,” Conor Faughnan, AA Director of Consumer Affairs warned. “In order to keep our roads safe it’s important that we remain patient even when stuck in significant traffic jams and respect the rights of all road users, from other motorists to vulner-

Worryingly, the AA survey also found that less than 1 in 12 motorists strongly agree that the government is taking necessary action to improve road safety.

Just 7.66% of respondents stated that the strongly agreed that the government was treating road safety as a priority. Meanwhile, a further 37.19% somewhat agreed that government was prioritising road safety, with almost a third of respondents partially or strongly disagreeing that the government was making adequate efforts to keep roads safe.

“We’ve made a lot of progress in tackling roads deaths and serious incidents in the last decade,

but there is still a lot of work to be done. It’s important that government don’t become satisfied with the improvements made in recent years and turn their attention away from this area. In fact, a priority for government must be to reverse the cuts to the Garda Traffic Corps and to ensure its continued growth over the next few years to ensure we don’t slide backwards in terms of road safety,” Faughnan added. “The cuts to the Traffic Corps in recent years have greatly impacted on Garda ability to police our roads effectively and this needs to be rectified. The planned increases in strength for 2018 are a good start, but we need to continue this into 2019 and beyond.”
