QUICK-thinking golfers and the club barman helped to save the life of a fellow player who took ill while playing in Greenore last Tuesday.

A club member in Greenore Golf Club, who lives in Dundalk, had completed 12 holes when the incident unfolded. Club secretary Linda Clarke praised the quick actions of the club members, officials and emergency service workers who combined to save the golfer's life.

“He had completed 12 holes and went back to his car to have a sit down as he was feeling unwell,” explained Linda.

“Peter McEneaney, a club

member, went over to see if he was alright and he collapsed in front of him. Peter rang ER straight away and in the meantime we got our defibrillator out to try to revive him. Our club vice captain Eugene Quinn, club member Pat Cunningham and bar manager Robert Murphy all worked on him while Peter liased with the emergency services on the phone as they made their way here,” added Linda.

“When the emergency services personnel arrived they knew immediately that the situation was serious and they asked for a helicopter to make their way here. I think it had to come from Athlone and when it arrived it landed on the 18th green.

Birthday gold medal for James

By Niamh Kirk The Special Olympic National Games in Limerick gave one local athlete an outstanding reason to celebrate.

Runner, James Meenan celebrated his 19th Birthday on Sunday by winning gold in the 200 metres final in Limerick. It was the second day of celebrations for James who also took gold the day before in the 100 meters sprint.

James will now be considered for the Special Olympic’s World Games taking place in Los Angeles in 2015. He has James Meenan with Mickey Harte See pages 14 & 18

conversion of three units in Dundalk Retail Park into a ten screen cinema complete with the expected ticket kiosks and food and snack retail areas. Plans to develop a cinema in the area have time and again been rejected, with An Bord Pleanan pointing to the conflict the development has with Louth County Council’s Development Plan 2009-2015 .

However this time An Bord Pleanala has taken a different view and

found “the proposed development would not seriously injure the amenities of the area, would be acceptable in terms of its impact on the vitality and viability of Dundalk town centre.”

They now believe that the cinema in the retail park would be ‘in accordance with the proper planning and sustainable development of the area’.

With ten screens it would be one of

the largest cinema complexes in the region but, planners in Dundalk have given the green light to add even more to the town. A third cinema for Dundalk has been approved by Louth County planners to adjoin the Marshes Shopping centre.

The existing IMC Cinema has flagged that it will close if competition is allowed to enter the market.

The cinema is the only business still operating in the Carroll Village

complex and will leave a significant void in the town centre if it were to suffer closure.

Previous reviews of Dundalk’s planning and town centre have criticised the lack of a healthy night time economy, it was one of the failings that saw Dundalk score poorly on comparative reviews of towns in Ireland.

The closure of the town centre cinema will exasperate these conditions, but by the same measure the

different cultural qualities and traditions the pupils develop an appreciation and respect for other nations and nationalities.

The school has been preparing for the past week for the day-long event which started off with a mini World Cup tournament among the whole school. Students came into school and shared the traditional artistic styles and methods, dance and food

from different countries with each other throughout the day.

Teachers themselves spoke of the benefits of the day, saying they too got the chance to learn new and interesting things too.

Students truly got a flavour of life in different countries as a banquet table of various national dishes was served up for lunch with parents joining in the fun.

A warrant was issued for the arrest of a man who failed to appear at Dundalk District Court to answer a speeding charge.

Sam O’Hara of 30 Latt Crescent, Newry, Co Down, was observed by Gardai travelling at 191kmph on the north bound carriage of the M1 on Sunday June 1 at Newtownbalregan.

The court heard that Mr O’Hara overtook the Garda car which had been on patrol.

Judge Flann Brennan issued a warrant for his arrest.

Driver left injured officer lying on road A man who became aggressive to Customs and Excise officials drove off at speed leaving an officer lying injured on the road.

Declan Morgan, whose address was given as 1 Railway Cottages, Lordship, Dundalk, blamed his actions on the fact that he was agitated because his father had been taken ill and he was in a hurry to attend to him.

In pleading guilty to charges of having an unregistered vehicle and

failing to keep a vehicle stationary, the 42-yearold defendant was fined a total of €5,000 at Dundalk District Court.

Officer Leo Connolly stated in evidence that on June 6, 2013, at a roadside check in Bellurgan, Mr Morgan was stopped driving an Northern Ireland registered vehicle.

The defendant was cautioned by Officer Rafferty who then sat in the passenger seat with the aim of completing the interview.

Mr Connolly stated that Mr Morgan became abusive to his colleague and after she attempted to persist with the interview he shouted at her to “get out of the effing car”.

The defendant then started the vehicle and revved aggressively before driving off at speed.

Mr Connolly then saw his colleague lying on the ground, she had cuts to her arm and was visibly shaken. She had to attend hospital and was

off work for three days.

Mr Connolly, who had been attempting to take a sample of fuel, stated that the defendant used very aggressive and obscene language.

He pointed out that Mr Morgan had been warned about the vehicle in May 2011 and although he enquired about importation the following month, nothing was done about it.

Judge Flann Brennan said he took a serious view of the matter as an officer was injured during the course of her duty.

“I can’t ignore that and I can’t ignore the fact that he drove the vehicle for a considerable time”, added the judge.

The maximum penalty for each charge was €5,000 which Judge Brennan reduced to half in each case. A charge of dangerous driving was struck out.

Caoimhe designs Local man Brendan Gallagher crest for new school becomes director at Prometric PROMETRIC, which operates a major business and test development enterprise in Ireland, has promoted Dundalk native Brendan Gallagher to the position of director.

Brendan was one of the first members of Prometric’s Dundalk-based team, joining the company in October 2011, when Prometric launched its plans to establish its Irelandbased hub. Gallagher has served as Prometric’s Planning and Design Manager for Test Development Operations from that time.

Caoimhe Kampes became Coláiste Chú Chulainn’s first ever prize winner when she scooped first prize in the highly contested student competition to design the new school crest.

Caoimhe’s detailed and artistic proposal for the school crest was selected from a wealth of entries that showcased the talent on its way to Coláiste Chú Chulainn.

The winning entry is now in the hands of the school’s design team who will work with Caoimhe’s inspirational ideas to define the school crest.

Coláiste Chú Chulainn will open its doors to its first cohort of students in September of this year. The school will reside in Chapel St., Dundalk alongside its all-Irish sister school Coláiste Lú, until their new state of the art education campus opens at the Marshes in the

Smashed eggs bring up 166th conviction News A man who chalked up his 166th conviction was sentenced to five months in prison when he admitted lashing out in a shop and smashing a number of chocolate eggs on the ground.

Thomas Maguire of Maple Close, Avenue Road, Dundalk, pleaded guilty to the offence which took place on Jocelyn St on January 11 this year.

The court heard that the

defendant, who was banned from the shop, was refused entry by the owner.

He tried to hit the owner and during the struggle the chocolate eggs were smashed on the floor with the damage estimated at €14.40.

Barrister, Irene Sands, stated that her client – who has 165 previous convictions – is currently serving a 10-month prison sentence and is not due

The third leg started at a blistering pace and high scores were exchanged before Daniel hit the winning double and the Avenue Eagles were crowned Andrew McAlester Shield winners for 2013/14.

Woman told Gardai they had seen her other boyfriend

A woman told Gardai that they had got the wrong boyfriend when they believed they knew the identity of a man who drove through a checkpoint.

Amy Landy of Shamrock Grove, Dunleer, told Dundalk District Court that she had two boyfriends at the time of the incident at Tullycahan, Louth, on December 13.

Ms Landy, who was the

passenger in the car which she owned, appeared at the court to answer charges allowing her car to be used without insurance and failing to give appropriate information.

Gardai believed the driver was a Mr Rogers, one of her boyfriends, but she told them it was Brian Sheridan who was “from somewhere near Culloville’. Neither the Gardai or the PSNI were

able to find Mr Sheridan.

After hearing the defendant’s direct evidence, Insp Brendan Cadden stated that the Garda at the checkpoint recognised the driver as Mr Rogers and added that he thought she was trying to cover up for this man.

Judge Flann Brennan questioned the reason why the defendant said she was afraid to make a statement to Gardai and asked if it

was because Mr Rogers was driving the car.

In reply to a question, Judge Brennan was told by the defendant that she didn’t know what perjury was.

“You took an oath to tell the truth and if you don’t that is perjury”, explained the judge, who added that it could result in a 14-year prison sentence.

When Ms Landy stated that she now understood

what it meant, Judge Brennan asked if she wanted to persist in telling him that Mr Rogers wasn’t driving the car on the night in question. She answered that this was the case.

On the night in question, a Garda had to jump out of the way to avoid the car, but an officer had taken note of the registration and later got in touch with Ms Landy.

Taaffe, stated that her client accepted that she was the passenger in the car but that she didn’t handle the situation very well.

“She was in a relationship with Mr Sheridan at the time but didn’t agree with what he did and how he drove at the checkpoint.

He offered her no explanation and they broke up shortly afterwards.

Veronica to take centre stage at flower show

By Niamh Kirk Local flower arranger Veronica McMahon from Knockbridge has been selected to demonstrate at one of the world’s premier flower shows.

Taking on the largest arrangement she has ever completed in front of the largest crowd she has demonstrated too, Veronica said that the opportunity is a great honour.

The World Flower Show is coming to Dublin’s RDS from June 18 to 22. The triannual event is unlikely to ever return to Ireland for many years and is a particularly opportune time for Irish florists, gardeners and arrangers.

years ago beginning with gardening and over time developing into flower arrangement. A member of the Ardee Floral Art Club, a teacher, demonstrator and judge with the Association of Irish Floral Artists Veronica has all the experience she could

need to take on the challenge.

Veronica was asked to demonstrate more than 12 months ago, and ever since has been working on her project. For this she has taken inspiration from the hidden gems of area, and her theme is the winter solstice at Newgrange. During the demonstration she will speak about the Boyne Valley, the history of the region and how she interpreted it in her piece.

Using artificial flowers during the planning stages, the display will burst to life in 30 minutes as Veronica takes the abundance of fresh flowers to complete the arrangement.

The arrangement is remarkable with a circular base five foot in diameter and reaching nine foot in height. It will require

a total of three on stage to manoeuvre the pieces into place as the arrangement comes together during the live demonstration.

A sphere oasis, representing the world famous winter solstice sun that brings light to the Newgrange tomb only once a year, descends on the scene to complete the arrangement.

While she has been invited to demonstrate her talent all over Ireland, Veronica was particularly honoured to be asked to take to the stage at this major industry event. There will be 600 entrees from 26 countries to the floral art competition.

The RDS will be in full bloom as thousands of delegates travel to the World Flower Show. This years’ title is a ‘Floral Odyssey.’

Ambulance crews facing delays in getting back on call

Only 47% of handovers from ambulance service to the Emergency department in Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital are cleared in the target time of 20 minutes. In the majority of cases the paramedic crews are delayed from getting back on call by more than 20 minutes by the crowding in ED departments.

The national turnaround times for April’s ambulances at hospitals were released last. The report also shows that in 2% of cases in Our Lady of Lourdes hospital, the ambulance is delayed by more than one hour at the Emergency department.

The NAS committed to improvements in this regard after a number of deaths that involved prolonged waits on ambulances. However these recent figures indicate that there has been little to no change in the turnaround of the emergency service with the national average turnaround.

Became aggressive after night club assault

A man who claimed he was assaulted in a night club became aggressive towards staff after being thrown out after he retaliated.

Mark Scott of 27 Seatown Place, Dundalk, pleaded guilty to public order charges when he ap-

peared at Dundalk District Court as a result of the incident on May 18 this year.

The defendant had been ejected and was demanding to get back into the night club when Gardai were called.

They observed him acting in an aggres-

sive manner towards the door staff and he tried to hit one of them. He continued to be aggressive and was arrested.

Mr Scott, who had 59 previous convictions, said that he had been struck in the face and after he hit back, he was ejected.

His solicitor stated that the defendant, who was very drunk on the night, was on an internship and waiting to start employment.

Judge Flann Brennan noted that the defendant had a bad record and imposed a €200 fine.

Eric takes on Cooley Mountain trek for Fighting Blindness funds

DkIt’s Ceol Oirghialla music ensemble heading for Brazil Members of Ceol Oirghialla perform during their recent trip to North America

Staff and students from the Ceol Oirghialla Traditional Music Ensemble are heading to Brazil this July to represent Ireland at the International Society for Music Education World Conference. As part of the trip, the group will engage in performances, workshops and collaborations with a number of international and local groups and will promote Dundalk as a place for tourism, education and business.

Led by Dr Adèle Commins, Head of Music, and Dr Daithí Kearney, Director of the Ensemble, the trip exemplifies the commitment in

the Section of Music at DkIT to creating international links and opportunities in performance and education. Fundraising is continuing to reach the necessary targets through sponsorship and other initiatives.

The selection of the Ceol Oirghialla group to perform at the ISME conference represents recognition of the establishment of music at DkIT. International experiences are a hugely significant learning experience.

Over the past few years the Ceol Oirghialla Section of Music have been building links with a number of institutions

in Europe and America.

The 2013/2014 academic year marks the tenth anniversary of music at DkIT and provides a fitting opportunity to build on these links through participation in the ISME conference in Brazil, the largest music education event in the world.

The group have just returned from a very successful and intensive tour of North America, where they performed at a number of venues in New York, Kansas and Missouri including visits to partner institutions Molloy College, New York and Baker University, Kansas. The group are not only ambassadors

for DkIT; they engage with various community and business groups to promote awareness of Dundalk and the surrounding region as a vibrant and positive place to live, study and do business.

The DkIT Ceol Oirghialla Traditional Music Ensemble will be the first ever representatives of Ireland at the ISME World Conference to be held in Porto Alegre, Brazil in July 2014.

The Brazilian tour by the DkIT Ceol Oirghialla Traditional Music Ensemble is part of the ten year celebrations of the establishment of music programmes at DkIT.

IDA Ireland today launched ‘Connect and Invest - Dundalk’, the sixth phase of its digital marketing initiative for attracting inward invest-

ment by highlighting the specific attributes of individual regional urban centres.

‘Connect and Invest – Dundalk’ is an interactive

experience designed for use on tablet, smartphone and pc. Information on location, education, lifestyle and existing IDA and indigenous companies is provided through images, video and text and will be continuously updated.

The website allows IDA executives to showcase Dundalk in face-toface client meetings.

Dundalk and the North East Region have a strong cluster in International Business Services (eBay, Coca-Cola, National Pen, International Fund Services and Liberty Mutual) and manufac-

Celem naszej podróży był Ravensdale Park. Las Ravensdale znajduje się w dawnej znalezionej posiadłości Lorda Clermont. Leży ona na granicy pomiędzy Irlandią Północną a Południową. Pałac Lorda Clermont został zniszczony na początku problemów politycznych w 1920 roku. Rzeka Flurry, która przepływa przez Ravensdale i wpływa do Dundalk Bay w Bellungan była w ostatnich czasach doskonałym łowiskiem pstrąga i łososia. Idealne miejsce na piesze wędrówki. Park położony jest w pięknej okolicy Gór Cooley w pobliżu malowniczych lasów, bogatej historii i folkloru.

Kto nigdy w tej zabawie nie uczestniczył albo już jej nie pamięta, polega ona na tym, że jedna grupa ucieka zostawiając po drodze strzałki, ślady i zadania do rozwiązania (listy) a druga grupa musi ją złapać. Drużyna uciekająca wygrywa, kiedy zadania nie zostaną rozwiązane. Drużyna pościgowa wygrywa, kiedy złapie drużynę uciekającą przed dotarciem do określonego celu.

Nasze podchody były nieco zmodyfikowane. Nie było drużyny uciekającej i ścigającej. Skupiliśmy się głównie na odczytywaniu znaków i zagadkach. Było rozwiązywanie krzyżówek, odpowiedzi na bardzo trudne pytania, układanie wyrazów z patyków etc.

Strudzeni, umęczeni i głodni musieliśmy odnaleźć jabłko ukryte w trawie ale jakież było nasze rozczarowanie, gdy jabłko było tylko rysunkiem namalowanym na kartce. Masakra ! Wróciliśmy Patrick Murtagh captures some of the action during pozytywnie zmęczeni. Kto byłby chętny na taką imprezę ?

ERIC Begg and Vincie McGuinness are back on the fundraising trail as they get ready to host the second annual Cooley Mountain Trek for the Fighting Blindness organisation.

Eric, from the Lisdoo Road, has been involved with the ‘Fighting Blindness’ charity for over ten years now and has raised thousands of euro thanks to various charity events such as chapel gate collections, quizzes and sponsored walks.

He was diagnosed with a retinal degenerative condition called retinitis

pigmentosa (RP) which unfortunately can’t be cured. Eric first started having difficulties with his sight in his early twenties and it has progressed to the stage that now in his sixties he is completely blind.

“Although it’s too late to help me I am determined to make sure that I can do as much as I can to ensure there is a cure for younger people who have sight difficulties. With that in mind myself and Vincie McGuinness are organising a Cooley Mountain Trek again to follow up last years

successful outing” explained Eric.

The sponsored walk takes place on the 12th July with two walks to cater for different levels of experience. The first, longer, walk starts at 11 a.m. with a free bus departing from The Lisdoo at 10.30 a.m. for those without transport.

The second shorter walk begins at 12 noon and there will be another free bus departing The Lisdoo at 11.30 a.m.

Both walks will be guided and walkers are advised to wear proper clothing and footwear. There will be

refreshments with finger food and music at The Lumpers afterwards.

Andrew gets VIP Games of Thrones trip

Games of Thrones may be over for this year, but Westeros is not that far away as Andrew McEneaney from Kilcurry found out.

Andrew won a competition with Discover Northern Ireland to go on a VIP tour of the filming locations and last week he travelled to ‘The North’, Kings Landing, the Iron Islands and further.

Andrew, a big fan of the show answered a simple question online to beat more than 8000 other entrants to join the tour.

He never thought

he would have been picked and was delighted, taking parents along too.

“The tour was great because it I could see the sets and go into the different rooms where the show was made. I saw the weapons in the show, it was quite cool, you could lift them up and touch them,” he said.

Andrew got to enter the spectacular Great Hall where the iconic Iron Throne sits and even met some of the actors.

“We got to meet some characters, Shay, Loras Tyrell and the Lady Brienne’s new

squire, Pod,” he said.

The TV series is full of suspense for Andrew who has not yet read the books, but plans to. “It is getting very exciting because you can’t tell what might happen next,” he said.

This weekend Andrew says he was concerned for the fate of one of his favourite characters Tyrian Lannister, “he’s a good character, but he could just die anytime,” said Andrew.

Andrew got to attend a special exhibition which took place in the Waterfront Hall Belfast featuring installations and a collection of more than 1000

artefacts from famous scenes in the series so far. He was immersed in the exquisitely created sets, costumes, armour and props are and see the craftsmanship that has boosted the authenticity of fantastical scenes.

The exhibition may have moved on and the series ended for now, but fans can still get their fix as the stunning filming locations can still be visited.

Discover Northern Ireland has produced tour maps of shooting locations inspired by the JRR Martin series A Songs of Ice and Fire.

Sun shines for Louth show The glorious sunshine on Sunday afternoon that welcomed visitors to the 125th Co Louth Agricultural Show was matched by the wonderful setting of Bellurgan Park and the variety of entertainment available on the day.

Not surprisingly, a huge crowd turned out to enjoy the attractions which Dundalk Show Society Ltd Chairperson Carmel Mee declared had ‘something for everyone’.

Poultry entries exceeded expectations with exhibitors coming from all over Ireland and the number of entries beating those recorded at some of Ireland’s biggest shows last year.

Cattle numbers were

similar to last year and sheep and horse numbers were well up. Trade stands were also large in numbers. Major attractions included Sheaf Tossing, Tug o War, Sheep Shearing, Sheep Dog Trials, Sheep and Pig Racing, Alpha Dogs Ireland. Huge crowd attends raft race

THE fine weather ensured that the Blackrock Raft Race enjoyed their biggest crowds in years as the people came in droves to enjoy a hugely successful event.

Now in its 19th year the raft race enjoyed one of its most successful outings yet with onlookers struggling to remember the last time they seen the beach so packed.

Larry Magnier who helped organise the

event was delighted with both the weather and the turnout for what was a fantastic day’s entertainment.

“We were absolutely thrilled with this year’s raft race and we are thankful that the sun shone down on us the whole day long.

The whole place was packed and there was a great buzz around the village”, noted Larry.

“We had a total of 26 rafts this year and we had brand new winners this year with Life Phar-

macy fending off all opposition to take home the prize.

It was a great contest with St Fursey’s NS coming in second followed closely by Blackrock Abbey nursing home.

“We had all sorts of activities going on as well as the raft race and I’d like to congratulate the winners of our Family Treasure Hunt, Sandcastle Competitions and Schools Talent Competition”, added Larry.

body who came along on the day and supported the event as well as all the sponsors, Louth Leader Partnership and Louth County Council.

He also thanked the Irish Coast Guard for the helicopter display.

Medals galore for Louth Olympians

Local Special Olympics athletes have returned from the national games with their largest ever haul of medals. All ten athletes returned from the Special Olympics Ireland Games victorious with a total of 11 gold, seven silver and three bronze medals between them.

Mary McElroy the local club organiser said, through a hoarse voice from all the cheering, that it was an incredible experience for all involved. The weekend started right on track as the team travelled by train to the games in Limerick and were surprised by an invitation aboard a special train travelling to the games from the eastern region. “Travelling down the atmosphere was electric, everyone as very excited”, said Mary.

The games involved a lot of early starts but the local team have been preparing for some time, with regular training taking place locally and at the provincial meetings around Leinster.

However, all the hard work leading-up to the games paid off as each of the local Olympians made an impression in their sports. In athletics the local club took home three gold medals, three silver, and two bronze; in swimming seven gold, three silver and a bronze; and in bowling, Peadar McArdle took home a silver and bronze medal.

“They are so proud and I am so proud of them, I can’t tell you.

They were so, so good. I’m sure it’s the most we’ve ever come home with”, said Mary.

The welcome that the athletes received in Limerick was a particularly heart-warming. The opening parade passed through the main street of the city and the locals came out in their droves to support the competitors. “Everyone in Limerick was so nice and good and kind”, she added.

The weekend could not have happened without the support of the community, Mary pointed to the efforts of Pat McMahon who helps train the athletics team and local fundraisers and donors.

“We are so grateful to local fundraisers and everyone who contributed and helped them get there, it couldn’t have happened without them”, she said.

Proud parents were waiting at Clarke Station on Sunday night for the team with banners and warm welcomes home.

The team held up their medals with pride as they walked over the bridge to their waiting families.

While everyone involved is still on a high, there’s not much time to rest as the athletes are back in training this week and already looking forward. Collections are taking place in the coming weeks for the local club and the groups are planning their annual trip to Bundoran in September.

The World Games take place next year in Los Angeles. Locally there has only been one representative from the club at the world games, about 20 years ago but after the success of the weekend there are hopes that there might be a second.

Ardee Band members at the Agricultural Show

Ardee Concert Band packed up their Instruments on Sunday June 15 and headed up the road to the 125th Co. Louth Agricultural Show in Bellurgan Park.

This was a first for the band, who performed for the first time at the show on the steps at the front of the dwelling house which still holds all its extensive period features.

The Agricultural Show showcased the best of produce, skills, crafts and traditions of the county and always proved to be the perfect family day out; and it was exactly that this year.

Overlooking the beautifully planted lawn the band played to a sun drenched audience.

“The band were well received at the show and we had a very enjoyable day in the fantastic summer sun, its home now to tend to our Sunburn”, said PRO Sinéad Nutley.

There was many an onlooker bobbing their head or tapping their feet along with the band’s summer programme which was directed by Band MD Brendan Breslin.

Inniskeen Barn Dance

A giant barn dance featuring a Garth Brooks Tribute Band is hoping to literally raise the roof in Inniskeen on Saturday June 28 at 8.30pm.

The revival of the Billy Brennan’s Barn Dance is being held on the grounds of Matthews Coach Hire at Callenberg.

A huge turnout is expected to this first fundraising event in aid of the Inniskeen Church Roof Fund.

The event also features music by Seamus Delaney and The Mavericks and a fantastic barbecue featuring roast pigs.

“We will have a bucking bronco and there will be best dressed cowboy and cowgirl competitions,” said Paddy Matthews, MD of Matthews Coach Hire, who are hosting the event, which is sponsored by McArdle Skeath Transportation, Refrigeration and Storage.

“The idea of reviving the Billy Brennan’s Barn Dance came from the line in the famous Patrick Kavanagh poem Inniskeen Road: July Evening – ‘The bicycles go by in twos and threes - There’s a dance in Billy Brennan’s barn tonight.’

“Kavanagh did so much to put Inniskeen on the map and we are confident that the bicycles, and cars, will all be headed to Matthews Coach Hire on June 28 for a superb night.”

Double celebration for Ravensdale school Pupils, staff members and friends of Dulargy NS were out in force on Friday last for a double celebration as the Ravensdale school marked the award of their third Green Flag and also held the official opening of their sensory garden. The unexpected fall of rain did little to dampen the spirits as, perhaps appropriately, the school accepted the flag for their efforts in promoting water conservation.

Teacher, Patricia Kilcommins, along with the members of the Green School committee had the honour of raising the Green Flag at the front of the school to a huge cheer from the assembled pu-

pils. Those in attendance made their way to the back of the school for the official blessing and opening of the outdoor classroom and sensory garden.

Local parish priest, Fr Padraig Murphy, performed the blessing while principal, Danny O Gallachoir, spoke of the pride the school had in the new facilities and praised all those who worked so hard to make it possible.

Fr Murphy and Mr O Gallachoir cut the ribbon along with Roisin Cotter, Eileen McGeown, Terri McKeown and Jimmy Quigley who led the gardening project, along with Maria Quigley of Members of the Green Schools Committee with teacher Patricia Kilcommins at the raising of the Green Flag the Community Centre committee.

the NEW TOYOTA AYGO

The new Toyota Aygo went into production at the TPCA (Toyota Peugeot Citroën Automobile) factory in Kolin in the Czech Republic on the 27th May 2014.

Currently the joint venture plant, which was established in 2005, is set to produce around 1,000 cars a day, including the Citroen C1. It has benefited from new investment worth more than €220 million and 700 new jobs have been created.

The TPCA plans to produce more than 210,000 units a year, from which Toyota is targeting annual sales of more than 80,000 in 2015 to take an estimated six per cent share of the European city car (A-segment) market.

New Aygo is powered by a reworked version of Toyota’s three-cylinder 1.0-litre VVT-i petrol engine and will be offered with a choice of manual or new x-shift automated manual transmissions. Promising combined cycle performance figures are 74.3mpg and 88g/km CO2 emissions.

The new Toyota Aygo is set to go on sale around the second half of next year. Prices and specifications closer to launch date.

The audi a7 upgrade

The Audi A7 Sportback has undergone some minor exterior tweaks, new engine and transmission options and an upgraded infotainment system for 2015.

The A7’s exterior now features a single frame grille, which adopts the latest hexagonal design, to the bumpers, which have been subtly re-sculpted, and to the tailpipes, which now have wider, trapezoidal apertures. LED headlamps are now combined with LED daytime running lights as standard, and can be upgraded to Matrix LED headlights.

There are new interior materials, including aluminium/Beaufort walnut inlays. The colour palette has been revised, and now offers additional colour options now extending to include the Valcona leather upholstery available as an upgrade to the standard Milano leather in versions below the S line. In S line versions, which previously featured Valcona leather exclusively in black as standard, a Lunar silver option is also now offered.

At launch the A7 Sportback will be available with a choice of five power plants, two petrol (TFSI) and three diesel units (TDI), ranging in power from 218PS to 333PS – all Euro EU6 emission compliant.

The newly developed V6 3.0 TDI clean diesel, which in its “ultra” guise outputs 218PS with front - wheel drive, is capable

of return 60.1mpg with CO2 emissions of 122 g/km on the combined cycle (NEDC figures).

The Audi S7 Sportback will feature a 4.0-litre TFSI outputting 450PS. The 3.0 TDI biturbo, which delivers 320PS is mated to an eight‑speed tiptronic transmission; all other engines configurations feature a seven‑speed S tronic transmission. In the versions with front‑wheel drive, the dual‑clutch unit replaces the eight-speed

multitronic CVT transmission.

For engine outputs of 272PS and above, quattro permanent allwheel drive can be supplemented with the sport differential, which actively distributes power between the rear wheels.

The A7 Sportback will feature Audi’s new generation infotainment system, which is built around the Multi Media Interface. Its uses a new graphics processor from Nvidia and
