QUICK-thinking golfers and the club barman helped to save the life of a fellow player who took ill while playing in Greenore last Tuesday. A club member in Greenore Golf Club, who lives in Dundalk, had completed 12 holes when the incident unfolded. Club secretary Linda Clarke praised the quick actions of the club members, officials and emergency service workers who combined to save the golfer's life. “He had completed 12 holes and went back to his car to have a sit down as he was feeling unwell,” explained Linda. “Peter McEneaney, a club

member, went over to see if he was alright and he collapsed in front of him. Peter rang ER straight away and in the meantime we got our defibrillator out to try to revive him. Our club vice captain Eugene Quinn, club member Pat Cunningham and bar manager Robert Murphy all worked on him while Peter liased with the emergency services on the phone as they made their way here,” added Linda. “When the emergency services personnel arrived they knew immediately that the situation was serious and they asked for a helicopter to make their way here. I think it had to come from Athlone and when it arrived it landed on the 18th green. Continued on page 14

Birthday gold medal for James

By Niamh Kirk The Special Olympic National Games in Limerick gave one local athlete an outstanding reason to celebrate. Runner, James Meenan celebrated his 19th Birthday on Sunday by winning gold in the 200 metres final in Limerick. It was the second day of celebrations for James who also took gold the day before in the 100 meters sprint. James will now be considered for the Special Olympic’s World Games taking place in Los Angeles in 2015. He has James Meenan with Mickey Harte See pages 14 & 18
