Dundalk athlete Kate O’Connor displayed her talent on the international stage by competing against some of the world’s top competitors at the Commonwealth Games. The St Vincent’s student is hungry for more high-level competition following a highly creditable eighth place finish in the heptathlon at the event Down Under. Seventeen-year old Kate is a member of St Gerard’s AC in Dundalk but travelled to the Gold Coast in Australia as part of the Northern Irish Commonwealth Games squad. The talented heptathlete qualified for the NI team as she was born in Newry and she travelled as the youngest member of the team. The local athlete finished

with a final points tally of 5695, a total which was just shy of her personal best of 5759. Despite competing in blistering temperatures that reached upwards of 30 degrees Celsius, Kate performed admirably in all eight events with the highlights being a PB in the high jump (1.78m) as well as a throw of 46.34 in the javelin which saw her claim second spot. According to Kate’s father and coach Michael O’Connor, the trip to her debut major games has left the promising heptathlete eager for more. “She was absolutely delighted with the whole experience and loved every minute of it.
