Dundalk athlete Kate O’Connor displayed her talent on the international stage by competing against some of the world’s top competitors at the Commonwealth Games.

The St Vincent’s student is hungry for more high-level competition following a highly creditable eighth place finish in the heptathlon at the event Down Under.

Seventeen-year old Kate is a member of St Gerard’s AC in Dundalk but travelled to the Gold Coast in Australia as part of the Northern Irish Commonwealth Games squad. The talented heptathlete qualified for the NI team as she was born in Newry and she travelled as the youngest member of the team.

with a final points tally of 5695, a total which was just shy of her personal best of 5759.

Despite competing in blistering temperatures that reached upwards of 30 degrees Celsius, Kate performed admirably in all eight events with the highlights being a PB in the high jump (1.78m) as well as a throw of 46.34 in the javelin which saw her claim second spot.

According to Kate’s father and coach Michael O’Connor, the trip to her debut major games has left the promising heptathlete eager for more.

Jordan Lennon of (20) of 21 Castle Heights, Castletown Road, Dundalk, was given a month to pay a donation of €300 to charity when he pleaded guilty to public order charges at Dundalk District Court

‘Children of the Eucharist’ in Redeemer National School

Pupils in Redeemer National School’s First and Second Class got the opportunity to spend special time with Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament, through the growing ministry of ‘Children of The Eucharist’ (COTE).

The Redeemer School is the first to avail of this initiative which will involve regular visits. Aoife Martin from COTE will attend every month and will be assisted by volunteers from the Legion of Mary in the parish.

The mission of COTE is to enhance the faith of children by guiding them gently in quiet prayer in the presence of Jesus, in the Most Holy Eucharist.

The Holy Redeemer Parish, in Dundalk, is one of the parishes to have embraced the COTE programme, and the parish priests, Fr. Paul and Fr. Sean are delighted with it.

The incident occurred at Magnet Road, Dundalk on March 25 this year.

Judge John Coughlan put the case back for one month and stated that he would strike the Pupils from Redeemer Girls National School matter out if the defendant paid the money.

“Of course the Commonwealth Games aren’t on the same level as the Olympics but with regards the organisation of the event it really is top class.

Kate was performing in a 40,000 seater stadium with big crowds and that’s something she immediately noticed as she wouldn’t have experienced anything like that before.

“The facilities were all first class and even the fact that she stayed in the athletes village and lived with other athletes for a week will be of huge benefit to her going forward. Just stuff like learning how

to live as part of a team and dealing with physios and all that goes along with top level competition was a great experience for her.

“She also got to compete with Katarina-Johnson Thompson who was one of her idols growing up so all in all it was a great Kate O’Connor in action at the Commonwealth Games week out in Australia for Kate. On the back of her performances on the Gold Coast Kate has been invited to perform at the prestigious Gotzis meeting in Austria which takes place next month. It’s a high level competition with all the best heptathletes and decathletes in attendance and we plan on competing assuming it doesn’t clash with Kate’s summer school exams,” explained Michael.

Bush Post Primary has been selected on a new pilot programme that will see the school teach Computer Science as a Leaving Cert subject for the first time.

Bush is delighted to be one of the 40 pilot schools nationwide and already have students interested in the subject. A 5th year class of students will start studying it in September, and will complete over 180 hours of the course, before sitting an exam worth 70% (30% coursework) in June of 2020. It will be the first ever Leaving Cert exam to be assessed online but much like every other, will follow the 8-point grading scale, offering 100 CAO points for a H1.

Several students at Bush are extremely eager to learn this new subject, as they feel it offers much more depth into the structure of technology than any previous subjects, whilst some believe it is essential, in today’s world, to have an understanding of how the virtual and networked environment around us works, especially for employment.

One Transition Year student, Darragh Callan, expressed his thoughts by stating: “I feel like there are plenty of jobs that’ll be in demand with all the new advancements in technology”.

An IT teacher at Bush, Gemma Duffy, revealed: “I think it’s great that we are offering the new Leaving Certificate Computer Science Course as it is a

wonderful opportunity for students who attend our school, especially if they hope to study computer science related subjects in third level.”

She also explained that, although some new computers would be great, the school is well equipped to roll out the course as the curriculum has loads of theory work and problem solving, as opposed to just practical work on a computer.

Another teacher, Aisling White, has been spending some of her own time in preparation for this new subject. She spends her Saturday mornings at a training course in Dublin, understanding how the course is expected to work and everything the student should know before his/her exam in 2020.

Kevin wins first major cup of the season Kevin Barry (10) won the first major cup of the season on Sunday when he shot a three-under par 69 to claim the Jubilee Cup. It was a narrow win as he only edged out the in-form Fergal Sexton (10) on countback.

Sexton had won Wednesday’s Open Singles with an impressive 42pts and was denied back to back victories by the narrowest of margins.

Pars at the opening two holes gave Barry a good start but a double bogey at the third undid that work and the same happened at the sixth where a bogey cancelled out the benefit of parring the index one fourth.

He then parred the index

three seventh and index seven eighth to get to two under nett but handed both back at the par three ninth which he doublebogeyed.

That left him on level par nett heading for home but he got it together down the back nine and came home in three-under nett after picking up shots at the 11th, 12th, 13th, 15th and 16th and giving away shots at the 10th and 18th.

In end it was that performance down the back nine that allowed him to hold off the challenge of Sexton.

The seventh annual Patsy Kelly 5K run took place last Saturday evening in glorious spring sunshine as a record attendance of almost 1000 people completed the popular race.

This year’s race was sponsored by Flogas and as always was organised by the North East Runners and Clan na Gael GFC. The race which is held in memory of former Clans groundsman Patsy Kelly was as always a very competitive affair with reigning Irish National Marathon champion Gary O’Hanlon leading the way finishing in a time of 15:07. The Kilkerley man’s performance was all the more impressive considering he had only returned from Berlin where he had posted a personal best in the half-marathon just a few days earlier.

nelly (16:36) and Leah Mooney (19:56) were first home. Hannah Toal received a special prize for crossing the line as the 5000th competitor since the race first began in 2012.

Aine Kelly, a daughter of Patsy, who was part of the organising committee for the always popular race thanked everybody who helped in anyway to ensure the race was a success once again.

“This is our seventh running of the race and it has been our most successful one yet. We have almost 1000 people taking part in our race today which is great to see.

“Thankfully the weather was in our favour and we got a nice evening for running. All in all it was a great success and we would like to thank everybody who came out and supported the race. It’s a great event and no doubt we’ll be back again next year for number eight,” stated Aine.

Leaders strengthen position at the top

Week 11 of the Tuborg Dundalk snooker league got under way with the top two going head to head as league leaders ‘Gonnolly Signs’ took on ‘The Embassy’.

In the first game it was ‘The Embassy’ who started strongest when a missed brown from Aaron Callan allowed Mickey Ralph to pot the remaining colours as he took the opening frame.

In the second, Steve McBride beat a brave Gerry Rogers to restore parity for ‘Gonnolly Signs’ at 1-1.

In the third David J McArdle continued his fine form beating Dominic O’Connor to put league leaders ‘Gonnolly Signs’ 2-1 up

on the night. It got even better for the league leaders when David J McArdle and Mickey Kelly played some great snooker as they beat Embassy duo Dominic O’Connor and David Moran to seal a 3-1 victory.

In the next match ‘Cusken Ltd’ and ‘Mallon Property’ locked horns with Liam Johnston of Cuskens taking on Stephen O’Hanlon in the opener. After a cagey start it was O’Hanlon who gave Mallon Property the early advantage winning a fine frame to take a 1-0 lead. It was about to get better for the real estate men when Tiernan Mallon played great stuff to beat Paddy Hayes from ‘Cusken Ltd’ to make it 2-0 to ‘Mallon Property’.

Cuskens with their backs against the wall got back into the match when James Coburn, who is playing his best snooker for years, beat Brendan O’Hanlon to keep his side in the match.

And they completed their comeback to earn a point when Paddy Hayes and James Coburn beat Patrick McArdle and Anthony Fee to make the final score 2-2.

In the final match of the evening ‘Charlie Chaplins’ took on ‘Natures Water’ with both sides in need of points to climb up the table.

‘Natures Water’ were fast out of the blocks when Alan Thompson beat Kevin McDonald in a great frame but Chaplin’s bounced

back in the second with Maddy Hoey producing the performance of the night when he beat Joe McEneaney to level matters at one a piece.

In the next despite the best efforts of Justin McArdle from Chaplin’s it was ‘Natures Waters’ Ken Byrne who outlasted him in a fine frame to put ‘Natures Water’ in front 2-1.

Dundalk councillors support striking workers Dundalk councillors Ruairi O Murchu and Anne Campbell have given their support to the striking workers at Irish Life today.

A majority of the 180-strong Dundalk workforce at the country’s largest pension provider took part in the one-day stoppage, along with their colleagues in the Irish Life centre in Dublin, in protest at plans by the multimillion euro firm to take employees out of the defined benefit pension scheme and put them into the

defined contribution one instead.

The Sinn Fein councillors spent time with the striking workers,

who are members of the Unite union, hearing how the proposed changes will affect the employees

in Dundalk, some of whom have been with the company since it first opened here nearly 17 years ago.

In a joint statement, Cllrs. O Murchu and Campbell said: ‘We went to the Irish Life picket line today to

support the Dundalk workers of the company who are facing a situation where they believe they could

lose 30% of their pension entitlements.

‘It was clear to see that the strike was being well-supported by the local community, judging by the sounding of car horns and waves from those driving by on the Inner Relief Road.

‘We spoke to a number of the workers, some of whom joined the company after 2007 and were put into the defined contribution scheme, and they were very supportive of their colleagues who face losing their defined benefit pension.

‘Some of them told us that the defined benefit pension promise was one of the reasons they had remained at the company for so long.

‘Sinn Fein stands with the Irish Life workers and we call on the company, which made around €200 million profit last year and which is, ironically, Ireland’s biggest pension provider, to engage with the Dundalk and Dublin workers immediately in a bid to come to a properlynegotiated and fair settlement’.

DUNDALK SCHOOL HOSTS FYFFES ‘FIT SQUAD’ INITIATIVE Students at De La Salle College, Dundalk are first in line when it comes to fitness.

Recently they took part in the inaugural ‘Fit Squad’ health and fitness session for children, organised by Fyffes in partnership with Dundalk Football Club.

Held at the College on Wednesday, April 11th, the hourlong, interactive session was delivered by Irish health and fitness guru, Tom Dalton.

Topics covered included an active workout plus talks and tips on healthy eating, all designed to improve children’s general fitness through engaging and fun-filled activities. Pupils also got the chance to meet some of their local heroes, with a number of Dundalk FC players in attendance.

Describing it as “part of our commitment to encouraging healthy eating and an active lifestyle”, Fyffes marketing manager, Emma Hunt-Duffy, said: “using our experience at De La Salle College as a guide, our intention is to roll-out a nationwide series of Fyffes ‘Fit Squads’ throughout 2018 with a focus on sports clubs and schools, both at primary and secondary level”.

Dundalk U-16 girls pipped at home Dundalk Girls U-16 took on Ashbourne United in the second round of the league in Oriel Park in what was a dress rehearsal for the cup final.

Dundalk took the lead through a Katie Moran penalty after Beth Hughes was

fouled. However, Ashbourne scored twice in the second half to win the game.

Despite the defeat, Dundalk can take a lot of positives from the game and look forward to the cup final with confidence.

The lady was told she had to go to the Haymarket Centre in Drogheda in order to register the births.

The Sinn Fein councillor has asked the HSE for a formal response to the situation, and has not yet received a response, but says other inquiries she has made reveal that ‘staff shortages’ are being blamed for the closure of the office in Dundalk.

Cllr. Campbell said: ‘I was shocked to find out this office, which provides a vital service for people in Dundalk and North Louth, has been closed since Monday. I have been able to

ascertain that there are problems with staffing and there is insufficient capacity in the HSE to provide appropriate staff for the office in Dundalk.

Fianna Fáil TD for Louth and East Meath Declan Breathnach has said that it is unacceptable that the Civil Registration Service Office in Dundalk has closed, leaving the Drogheda Office as the only option available now for this vital service.

“Dundalk is a highly populated town and a convenient location to serve all of North Louth, including Carlingford and Omeath. It is unacceptable for people from the north of the county to have to travel over 60km to Drogheda to avail of what is a vital and necessary service.

“I will be asking the HSE to have the office in Dundalk reopened without delay,” concluded Mr Breathnach.

Criticism of closure of Civil Registration Office Local representatives have hit out at the sudden closure of the Civil Registration Office at the Community Care Centre at the Dublin Road.

The office which registers births, marriages and deaths has been temporarily closed as a result of staff shortages and the development has been criticised by Declan Breathnach TD and Cllr Anne Campbell.

The centre, which is located on the same campus as the Louth County Hospital, was closed on Monday, April 9, on what the HSE says on its website, is a ‘temporary’ situation.

Cllr. Campbell, a member of the Regional Health Forum, says she was made aware of the issue yesterday (Tuesday) when a woman from North Louth went to the centre to register the birth of her twins and found that it was

Young cyclists make a big impression

Local cyclists made the trip to Drogheda which was the centre of the Irish cycling scene over the weekend with the running of the Rás na nÓg, Since its inception in 2007 the race has become one of the premier youth racing events on the calendar. The annual event is a three-stage, two-day race, which saw hundreds of underage male and female cyclists compete.

Andrea Rogers and Rhiannon Dolan from Cuhulainn’s underage section travelled to Bellewstown to take part in the race. The girls were competing in their first ever road race in the Under 12 event and both gave good accounts of themselves. Rhiannon was 4th over-

all in her event. Andrea had some bad luck with crashes and mechanical problems, however such was her determination on the day that she was rewarded with a special presentation. The club’s underage section meets every Monday night at The Bike Station from 7pm to 8pm and new members are always welcome. For information contact Karl Dolan 087 2219810.

Meanwhile in the IVCA racing the results just keep coming for Ray Fedigan. This time he claimed another third place in the latest round in Kilcullen.

This week sees the eagerly anticipated return of the Bike Station summer cycling league. The 15 round league starts on Thursday (April 19) and will see a number of new courses, including for the first time an ascent of the dreaded Jenkinstown Hill. The last time Jenkinstown saw a bunch was in the hey days of Sean Kelly and Stephen Roche when it was used as part of the Nissan Classic. The league is sure to see some exciting racing, with over 150 riders signed up to compete.

Sadbh stars in speech-writing competition Sadbh Boylan a student at St Vincent’s Secondary School is celebrating after being names as one of the winners of the national ActionAid Speech Writing Competition 2018.

The final was held in the Royal Irish Academy in Dublin March 21 attended by over 60 people.

Nine finalists emphatically delivered their speeches in front of a panel of judges including Hans Zomer (Head of Communica-

tions to the President of Ireland), Winifred Ikhine Akinyemi (Irish Aid), Rodney Rice (former RTE Broadcaster and ActionAid Chair) and Moira Leydon (Association of Secondary Teachers of Ireland).

The speeches were judged on delivery, writing skills and understanding of the topic and Sadhbh came out on top along with Juliette O’Donnell, a student at Coláiste Éinde in Galway. The two winning students clearly dem-

onstrated their enthusiasm towards human rights in a superb display of research, critical thinking and originality.

Sadbh was delighted with the win commenting, “I am really excited and surprised to win the competition! I didn’t know much about the Sustainable Development Goals before but I did a lot of research and now recognise the importance of overseas development aid, and understand how it

can bring us closer to reaching sustainable development.”

The two winning students scooped first prize, a trip to Brussels in June accompanied by their teachers and ActionAid. There they will meet with members of the European Parliament, organisations active on women’s rights, youth and development.

The visit will give students a taste of advocating for a fairer world at a European level and in-

spire them to advocate for change with their peers and in their communities in Ireland.

The finalists had seen off competition from over 130 entries, aged 14 to 17, from over 40 schools across the countries, to reach the final.

The speech topics were based on one of three topics relating to women’s rights and the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Leader celebrates ten years in business This week marks a significant milestone in the history of the Dundalk Leader as the newspaper celebrates its tenth anniversary.

It was on April 16, 2008, that the Leader first hit the streets and since then it has developed into Dundalk’s favourite newspaper.

Memorable weekend for golfers

It was a good weekend for Dundalk Golf Club on the inter-club front as four teams advanced to the next rounds of their respective competitions.

The men’s Barton Cup team, the ladies Minor and Challenge Cup teams and the Boys U18 Fred Daly Trophy team are all safely through to the next round but the ladies Intermediate Cup team were beaten while the Boys’ U15 team have a mountain to climb after their first leg.

The Ladies were the busiest section with three teams scheduled to play over the weekend although only two of them actually got to tee up as the Minor Cup team, which had been due play Hollywood Lakes in Concra Wood, got a walkover.

On Saturday, the Challenge Cup team were involved in a nailbiter with Ashbourne in Laytown & Bettystown. The scores were tied at 2-2 but Marie Griffin got Dundalk over the line when she won her match on the 18th to give Dundalk a 3-2 win. The other players on the team, which is managed by Brid Rocks and Mary Dooley, were Oonagh Quinn, Joan McKenna, Teresa Oakes and Sally McDonnell.

On Sunday, the Intermediate team, managed by Olivia Cunningham and Teresa Oakes, faced Ardee in Concra Wood and unfortunately, despite great preparation by the players and managers, they

came out on the wrong side of a narrow 3-2 defeat. The team was Bernie McCabe, Theresa Connolly, Brìd Rocks, Mags Coburn and Katherina Conneally Sloan while Jean Connolly and Maeve Ahern were the subs.

The only men’s team in action was the Carl Stewart and Alan McDermott managed Barton Cup team which faced Ardee on Saturday with three of the five matches at home.

Dundalk won the home leg 2-1 with none of the three matches going beyond the 14th hole.

In the top match, Neal MacKell and Aaron Waite got their noses in front early and ran out winners by 5&4. It was even more decisive in the next match but it was the Dundalk pairing of Shane Hession and Donal Sheridan who were on the wrong side of the scoreline, going down 6&5 on a day when nothing went right for them.

Damian English and Ciaran Sheridan got control of their match around the turn and eventually won by 5&4 to leave Dundalk 2-1 ahead and all eyes were then on the action in Ardee where the two matches were a lot closer.

Going down the back nine, Dundalk’s lead pairing of Billy Cairns and Aidan Thornton had edged narrowly in front and they closed out the match when they won the 17th hole to win 2&1 with their point securing the overall victory for Dundalk.

In the bottom match the pairings were all square for most of the round with never more than a hole in it. Ardee won the 15th to go one up, but Clem Walshe and Paul O’Callaghan rallied to win the 16th and they were called while on the 17th fairway so the match was halved.

The Boys U18 team delivered Dundalk’s only pennant last year when they won the Fred Daly Leinster title and with five of last year’s squad still underage they definitely have a chance of being in the mix again this year.

They opened their campaign on Sunday afternoon against Laytown & Bettystown and emerged 3.5 to 1.5 winners.

Ireland internationals Eoin Muphy and Josh Mackin, playing in Dundalk, both won with Murphy winning 4&3 while Mackin won by 5&4. Sean Laverty, also playing over the home course, was two up when called in on the 14th Emma Rogan MLA, Lynn Boylan MEP, Cllr Ruairi O Murchu and Martina Anderson MEP at the Eurobecause Kyle Rafferty, playing pean Parliament to mark 20 years since the Good Friday Agreement. in Laytown, had won 2&1 to secure the winning point. Finally, the Boys U15 team have it all to do in the second leg of their Leinster Inter-Club tie against Co Louth as they lost all five matches in Baltray on Saturday and must now do a clean sweep in Dundalk on Sunday afternoon.

Public Order Offences

A man who pleaded guilty to public order charges was spared a conviction after he made a donation of €300 to charity. Kieran Hoey (28) of 8 Slatequarry Rd, Cullyhannagh, Armagh, was charged after an incident at Park St on March 18 this year. Judge John Coughlan struck the matter out after the donation was handed in to court.

Conor Fitzpatrick (24) of 76 Newry Rd, Rathfriland, Newry, pleaded guilty to public order charges when he appeared at Dundalk District Court. The defendant was charged following an incident at Park St on March 18 this year. Judge John Coughlan stated that he would strike the matter out after Mr Fitzpatrick agreed to make a €300 to charity.

Joseph Grant (25) 29 Newtown Rd, Claghauge, Nrewry, had the case against him struck out at Dundalk District Court after he paid €300 to charity. Solicitor Barry Callan stated that his client admitted the charges following the incident at Park St on March 17 this year. Judge John Coughlan struck the case out after the money was paid.

New €500,000 start-up fund for graduates Fine Gael TD for Louth Fergus O’Dowd is calling on recent graduates to apply for the Government’s new Competitive Start Fund, which has been launched by his colleague the Minister for Business, Enterprise and Innovation, Heather Humphreys.

O’Dowd said “Final year students, and graduates with a third-level qualification within the last three years, who have a start-up company can now apply for the Government’s new start-up fund worth a total of €500,000.

Up to 10 successful applicants will be awarded up to €50,000 each.

“The fund is aimed at those working across manufacturing and internationally traded services sectors including sub-sectors such as cloud computing, software-as-aservice, enterprise software, cleantech, gaming, mobile, apps and LifeSciences.

“The goal of this new fund is to support start-up companies that have the capacity to succeed in global markets as part of our strategy to in-

crease the number and quality of High Potential Start-Up companies that have the potential to employ more than 10 people and achieve €1 million in export sales within three years.

“Unemployment has greatly reduced from a peak of 16% in 2012 to 6% in March 2018 which is strengthening communities across the country.

“Recent CSO figures show that the number of people signing on the Live Register in Louth has dropped by 15%

in the last year alone.

“A big part of Action Plan for Jobs is encouraging entrepreneurs as they have been a massive part of Ireland’s recent job creation success.

Public Order Offences

Ryan Halpin (19) of 18 Blackthorn Grove, Kells, Co Meath was given the chance to avoid a conviction when he was given two weeks to make a contribution to charity. The defendant admitted public order charges and possession of cannabis herb following an incident at Park St on March 6 this year. Judge John Coughlan adjourned the case for two weeks and stated the he would strike the matter out if €300 was paid for charity.

Coláiste Rís are treading the boards once again

Following on from their hugely successful production of the “The Wedding Singer”, the students of Coláiste Rís are hitting the stage again with their production of the highly acclaimed musical “All Shook Up” this May. Transition Year students have been busy rehearsing since auditions in early October.

Speaking about the event, Transition Year student Eoghan McGeough who plays the lead role of Chad said everyone involved was looking forward to the show.

“All of the Transition Year students are involved in the production, including the promotion of the event, the costumes and the set design so it’s a big production with everyone working as a team.”

“Learning the routines was probably most difficult for us all, as there were many moves involved, but we’re delighted with what we’ve achieved and we’re certain we’ll put on a fantastic show.”

All Shook Up is a musical comedy built around a number of songs made famous by Elvis Presley. It takes place in 1955, somewhere in Middle America, where one girl’s dream and a surprise visit from a mysterious leather-jacketed, guitar-playing stranger help a small town to discover the magic of romance and the power of rock & roll. Among the 24 songs featured in the score are classics like “Heartbreak Hotel,” “Love Me Tender,” “Don’t Be Cruel,” “Can’t Help Falling in Love,” and of course the title tune.
