A LOCAL campaigner who has been on the frontline in opposition to the water charges has stated that the revelation that Louth is losing 40 per cent of its water through leakages, highlights the folly in the Government’s approach to the water issue. Maeve Curtis was speaking in relation to the statement from Jerry Grant, head of asset management for Irish Water, who said about 800 million litres of water is being lost each day, which is 49 per cent nationally and 40.3% in Louth. She claims that the money used to set up Irish Water would have been better used to fix the leaks, while it would also have avoided all the controversy and protests that followed.

“More than one billion euro of taxpayers money has been spent on setting up Irish Water and the question has to be asked why we didn’t spend that money fixing the leakages first instead of pouring it into this needless company”, noted Maeve. “The setting up of Irish Water has been a disaster right from the very start and the amount of wastage displayed has been astonishing. We have payed €86 million for consultants to tell us that we need leakages fixed. It is absolutely ridiculous. “It’s been a sham from the get go and if the Government were serious about fixing the huge problem of leakages in our country they would have spent all the wasted money they’ve been throwing at Irish Water on Continued on Page 6
