A DUNDALK DOCTOR is searching for a strip of land in Dundalk or nearby for use in medical emergencies. According to Dr Dilip Mahapatra, Medical Director of Lugh Medical Centre in Dundalk, the installation of an airstrip has the potential not only to save lives around the County but also to ensure much speedier transfer of bio-specimans such as blood and plasma between hospitals.
Dr Dilip who is also a doctor in St Mary’s Hospital in Drumcar ran as an independent in last year’s local elections while calling for an action plan to restore full acute services to Louth County Hospital.
He says he has been campaigning for an airstrip in Louth since 2018 and is appealing once again to any landowners to contact him if they are able to help the local community by offering a strip of land with a minimum length of 1200 ft.

“I have been reaching out to farmers and landowners since I started this campaign in 2018 and we have been so close on a number of occasions to securing a strip of land from generous farmowners/ landowners who offered to help us but unfortunately it just hasn’t worked out yet.
“I believe that an airstrip is vital for County Louth and it would let us airlift patients in need of urgent care to Beaumont Hospital for example which would be much quicker than transporting them in ambulances down the M1. We could also use the aircraft to transfer blood samples and lab results to Dublin which would be a much speedier method and much more efficient,” argued Dr Mahapatra.
“We were all set to have the airstrip in Marsh Farm, Dromiskin probably about five years ago now after the landowner, John Lambe offered us a strip of land to be used as an airstrip for light aircraft to land on. John was very generous and accommodating and offered us an east to west section of land which is needed for the aircraft to land on. Unfortunately it was just 150 metres short of the required length and we had to abandon that location.
“I also approached Dundalk Stadium Horse Racing track a couple of years ago asking if it was possible to use land at the back of their stadium and in fairness to them they said they would be open to the suggestion but had to clear it with directors. They came back and told us that there were people on the board worried that the horses could potentially get frightened with the sound of the aircraft and they wouldn’t be able to grant access to us to the field.
“There was also a farmer in Dromiskin who had the space to give to us but unfortunately he couldn’t give us access for all year around which is what is needed. There are a number of us involved in this campaign and some of our members have light aircrafts which they currently have to park in Baldoyle at great expense. Our plan eventually if we get this up and running is to allow people to store their aircrafts ay whatever location we eventually settle on.
“This idea will definitely save lives and in the example of a multo crash on the motorway an aircraft service would prove invaluable saving precious minutes giving the victime of the road accident a better chance of survival. We could also link up with the Coastguard service and allow them use of our land as coastguard goes hand in hand with our medical and rescue services. This would be a not for profit service and would have costs involved which would have to be raised by us but I believe it is possible and we could also link in with local businesses and use aircraft to deliver packages to Dublin or around the country and use that as a means of paying for any costs involved.
“I am appealing to any farmer in County Louth to reach out to me if they have a strip of land at least 1200 ft in length which can be given to us to create a landing strip. This gesture will save lives in our County and I would urge anybody who is a position to help us to contact me and we can get things moving,” stated Dr Dilip.
If any landowner in Co. Louth is in a position to help Dr Dilip they can contact him at dmahapatra@ hotmail.com
LOUTH COUNTY COUNCIL, in partnership with Newry, Mourne and Down District Council and East Border Region, is proud to announce the completion of the Carlingford Lough Greenway, a transformative cross-border active travel route connecting Newry in County Down to Carlingford in County Louth.
The Carlingford Lough Greenway is a project supported by the European Union’s INTERREG VA Programme, managed by the Special EU Programmes Body (SEUPB).
This newly completed 11.4km section, which was officially celebrated on Friday, 12th September, forms part of a wider 20km greenway stretching from Newry City to Carlingford, offering a world-class facility for commuters, recreational users, and tourists alike.
The celebration event was attended by key project partners and stakeholders, including Cllr Seán Kelly, Cathaoirleach of Louth County Council; David Conway, Chief Executive of Louth County Council; Jerry Buttimer TD, Minister of State at the Department of Rural and Community Development; Liz Kimmins MLA, Minister for Infrastructure; Gina McIntyre, CEO of the Special EU Programmes Body (SEUPB); Cllr
Philip Campbell, Chairperson of Newry, Mourne and Down District Council; Marie Ward, Chief Executive, Newry, Mourne & Down District Council; and Cllr PJ O’Hanlon, Vice Chairman of East Border Region.
The route links with the existing Newry–Portadown Cycleway and Towpath, creating a continuous 52km off-road corridor along the east coast of Ireland. This enables walkers and cyclists to travel off-road between Belfast and Dublin via Sustrans Route 9, also known as the Great Eastern Greenway.
The Carlingford Lough Greenway provides a scenic, safe, and sustainable travel option, enhancing connectivity between communities on both sides of the border. Once the Narrow Water Bridge is completed, it will further strengthen cross-border links, offering direct access from County Louth into the wider County Down area.
Louth County Council, in partnership with Newry Mourne and Down Council and East Border Region, secured funding of €5.14m from the European Union’s INTERREG VA Programme managed by the Special EU Programmes Body (SEUPB), to deliver the Carlingford Lough Cross Border Greenway. Matchfunding for the project under the INTERREG VA Programme has

Whether you’re commuting, out for a walk, or cycling with family, this greenway offers a safe, scenic, and sustainable way to travel.
Louth County Council is proud to have played a part in delivering such a valuable amenity that will benefit locals and visitors for years to come.”
David Conway, Chief Executive of Louth County Council, said: “The Carlingford Lough Greenway is a testament to the power of collaboration and vision. PAULA Butterly TD has proposed to the Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage about the large number of housing developments that have not completed their agreed facilities and or amenities in County Louth.
Currently, 70 housing estates across the county are still awaiting “Taking in Charge” by Louth County Council. Many of these developments have been left incomplete, with no developer in place or no bond to fund essential works. In some cases, bonds exist, yet vital infrastructure such as public lighting, safe footpaths, crèche facilities and community amenities remain unfinished.
Deputy Butterly said “It is unacceptable that families are being left to live in estates, where they bought on the conditions of having certain amenities and services often with the developers having not completed what was agreed, what they were paid for and what they received planning permission for. Communities should not have to wait years for proper lighting, footpaths, or childcare
facilities. Developers must be required to deliver these essentials before or during construction, not years afterwards, if at all.”
The lack of childcare facilities is a particularly urgent issue in Louth right now, families are crying out for crèche places across
the county, yet many new developments are being built without them. Parents are being forced to travel long distances or go without childcare altogether. Unfortunately, it is women who mainly bear the brunt and are faced with a dilemma on how to maintain their employment, pay their bills and find childcare. It’s simply incompatible and unsustainable in these times. “Every new housing estate should provide for childcare facilities where there is clear need,” said Deputy Butterly. She has called on the Minister to introduce regulations for infrastructure, including childcare, before planning permissions are granted to developers. Deputy Butterly said “We cannot continue to repeat the mistakes of the past. If we want to build sustainable communities, then essential infrastructure must come first. Families in Louth and across the country deserve safe, complete estates from the moment they move in. At the end of the day, councils have to step in and in reality, is an additional burden on taxpayers.”

JASON MCGEE has paid tribute to his long time friend and collaborator, Harry Lee who sadly passed away last week in Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital following a short illness. Jason worked alongside Harry for the Gathering Heritage project which saw the duo interview and record local people to capture their life experiences and memories of growing up in Dundalk.
Harry was well known around town for his love of local history and passion for the arts and was also a popular presenter on local radio. The Oaklawns man also owned a shoe shop beside the Town Hall and remembering his old friend Jason says that Harry ‘packed more into his life in his 70’s and 80’s than most people do in a lifetime’.
“Harry Lee was one of my best friends even though there were 30 years between us in age. He was a good humoured and very knowledgeable about all things Dundalk. We
met nearly 20 years ago and immediately hit it off as we both had a love of heritage, people and radio. Harry and I setup an oral history project called www.gatheringheritage.com and together we collected almost 60 interviews with people from the town.
“Harry was a superb interviewer who was able to make people relaxed and they would
tell him their life story with ease. He was fascinated with the News and Sport and whenever I rang he would say “Did you hear the latest?” even though Harry wasn’t a gossiper.
“Harry just loved talking to people and it would often take us half an hour to get from one end of Clanbrassil Street to the other that many people would stop and
chat to him. In 2013 we setup Louth Internet Radio and Harry loved being on the air. He presented a 2 hour mid morning show for a year with hundreds of guests and Harry was at his best with a memorable interview with Miriam O’Callaghan.
“Harry went on to star in two Hidden Hearing TV Adverts one of which was shown during the ad break on RTE during the Toy Show. Harry also participate in several YouTube broadcasts on the History of Dundalk which can still be found online. He even almost had his own animation series that would have covered “Harrys Adventures.
“Harry packed more into his life in his 70s and 80s than most people do in a lifetime. I will miss him terribly especially on Saturdays when we would always chat just before “Match Of The Day” which was his favourite programme. Rest in Peace Harry,“ concluded Jason.
THE DÁIL resumes this week with a focus on the ‘abject failure of government to positively improve the lives of people living with disabilities’, Sinn Féin TD Ruairí Ó Murchú has said.
With TDs returning to Leinster House on Wednesday, Sinn Féin held a two day think in at a hotel in Dun Laoghaire last week, with disability issues taking centre stage, the Louth TD revealed.
Deputy Ó Murchú is the party’s disability spokesperson and two major planks of government policy on disability will come under the spotlight immediately, with a debate on the newly launched Disability Strategy and a Sinn Féin motion on special education places on the agenda.
The Dundalk TD said there will be continued emphasis on the ‘abject failure of government’ in key disability areas and said the government’s Disability Strategy contained ideas but absolutely no delivery detail.
He said the party hosted autism campaigners Cara Darmody and Rebecca Meehan and heard powerful and heartbreaking tes-
timony from scoliosis campaigners Gillian Sherratt and Stephen Morrison, the parents of Harvey Morrison Sherratt who died earlier this summer.
Deputy Ó Murchú said: “The think in provided an opportunity to hear from autism campaigners about the huge delays there still are for autism assessments and therapies. Currently, people have a right to get an assessment of
need within six months of referral and the government has indicated that it could change the legislation and there is deep concern about the what this would mean for of one of the only rights, unvindicated and all as it is.
“We heard from Rebecca how there are still problems between the Department of Education and schools when it comes to delivering autism classes in a timely way and we heard from Cara about the need for continued pressure to be brought to bear on the government in order to ensure the assessment of needs are done quickly and that the therapies recommended in the reports are provided, whether that’s through the disability network teams or through schools-based therapies”. And said he and all those present at the think in were ‘deeply moved’ by the bravery shown by Harvey’s parents who ‘are advocating for other children at a time of unimaginable grief to get a public inquiry and to ensure there are changes to the system that seems to constantly fail these young patients’.
‘BLOOMSDAY Belles’
is a multidisciplinary performance of original music and song, composed and performed by critically acclaimed musician, Emer Kenny, inspired by the female characters in Ulysses. The performance includes selected excerpts from Ulysses.
In addition to original composition and Ulysses text read by spoken word poet Mikey Cullen the performance includes De Falla’s Spanish Dance representing Molly’s youth and heritage, performed by multi-award winning concert harpist, Rosie Murphy. The music and text will be interpreted and danced by the brilliant Ukrainian contemporary dancer, Polina Skarha. James Joyce was an opera lover, and particularly loved Donizetti’s ‘Lucia di Lammermoor’.
The performance includes the harp cadenza from Donizetti’s opera ‘Lucia Di Lammermoor’ representing Molly’s classical singing career and echoing James Joyce’s daughter, the dancer Lucia.
Clock chimes and bells feature throughout the work. The Blooms lives are punctuated by St. George’s church bells.
The chiming ‘Heigh Ho’ symbolising the relentless passing of time and the briefness of youth and beauty.
Emer has already performed ‘Bloomsday Belles’ at the James Joyce Centre and The Joyce Tower at the Bloomsday Festival in June, receiving a standing ovation for the performance which was described as having ‘hauntingly beautiful music’.
According to Emer
the performance showcases the complicated relationship between Leopold and Molly, the main characters of Ulysses.
“I read Ulysses and acknowledge that it can be hard work to read and decipher but what I got from it and what I wanted to do with this performance was come at it from a more emotional angle and focus on the female characters in Ulysses.
“The show is about 35 minutes long with maybe 20 minutes of music and 15 minutes of spoken word which is
performed by renowned Dublin spoken word poet Mikey Cullen. My daughter Rosie, a classical concert harpist, is also in the show as well as contemporary Ukrainian dancer Polina Skarha who I worked with before when I put on a show called ‘Bright Star’ which was inspired by the stories of Ukrainian women who fled the war in Ukraine and are now living in Ireland. Polina is like a daughter to me at this stage and she is a wonderful contemporary dancer who brings the music to life on stage.
“I’m the voice of Molly and I sing and speak while Polina physically brings to life what I say on stage. I would say it is poignant as well as funny in places and pretty unique. It got a great reception in Dublin when we performed it in June and hopefully it will be enjoyed this weekend in Dundalk when we will put on two performances of the show on Friday. We are in contact with the French Embassy and hoping to perhaps perform the show in Paris next year. Joyce spent years living in Paris
and there are concerts and exhibitions in his memory over there each year,” explained Emer. ‘Bloomsday Belles’
will be performed by Emer and her cast on Culture Night, 19th September at 4pm in The Still Dundalk Li-
brary Museum Courtyard and at 8pm in An Táin Theatre. Tickets Free. No Booking Required.
For almost seventy years now members of the Dundalk branch of Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann have featured prominently among the prize winners at the annual Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann. This year was no different with young musicians
from Dundalk and surrounding areas taking home first, second and third prizes from the Fleadh in Wexford.
The latest All Ireland Champions from the branch are James White and Ryan Martin.
James from Crossabeigh won the Senior Piano Accordion competition. All Ireland titles are nothing new to James because on four previous occasions he was champion in the Under 12 and 12-15 age groups.
Like James, Ryan Martin from Dromiskin is no stranger to success on the National Stage. This year he won the 12-15 Harp Slow Airs competition. He didn’t compete in the Harp Dance Music competition as he had already won that one last year, and in 2022 he won both harp competitions in the under 12 age group.
The following competitors from the branch were also among the prize winners in Wexford.
15-18 Age Group
Fionn Marron, Monaghan 3rd in Mandolin
Lauren Carr, Armagh 2nd in Flute Slow Airs
Over 18 Age Group
Enda Dooley, Dromiskin 2nd in Mandolin and 3rd in Banjo
Rachel Dooley, Dromiskin 2nd in Harp Dance Music and in Harp Airs
Flute player Donnchadh Mac Aodh from Blackrock was a member of the ‘Colla Céilí Band’ from Armagh placed 2nd in the Senior Céilí Band competition.
Branch classes for the 2025/26 season will com-
mence soon. An information night will be held on Monday night 22nd September.
It is hoped that young children starting classes this Autumn will feature among the All Ireland Fleadh Champions in years to come.
Recently the branch held a very successful flag day and a collection at a recent match in Oriel Park. The branch committee wish to thank all who contributed so generously to these collections and also to Dundalk FC for their consent to collect.

For no-one knows the heartache, That lies behind the smiles, No one knows how many times, We have broken down and cried. We want to tell you something, So there won’t be any doubt. You’re so wonderful to think of, But so hard to live without.
Always loved and remembered, by the Hearty and Mackin families.
Dear Heart of Jesus, in the past I asked you for many favours
This time, I ask for this special favour (mention it). Take it, dear Heart of Jesus and place it within your own broken heart, where your Father sees it. Then in his merciful eyes, it will become your favour, not mine. Amen.
Say this prayer for 3 days. Promise publication and favours will be granted. (Never known to fail) MK

MESSAGE FROM OUR LADY MEDUGORJE - AUGUST 25TH 2025
Dear Heart of Jesus, in the past I asked you for many favours This time, I ask for this special favour (mention it). Take it, dear Heart of Jesus and place it within your own broken heart, where your Father sees it. Then in his merciful eyes, it will become your favour, not mine. Amen.

Dear children, my little children, my beloved ones; you are chosen because you have responded, you have put into practice my instructions and love God above all else. Therefore, little children, pray with all your heart that my words may be realised. Fast, sacrifice yourselves, love out of love for God Who created you, and be, little children, my extended hands to this world that has not come to know the God of love. Thank you for having responded to my call.
Council urged to put signage up in disability parking bays
A LOCAL disability campaigner and spokesperson for the Post Polio Support Group in Louth, Monaghan and Cavan has urged Louth County Council to update a number of disabled parking signs around town to let Brendan broadly welcomed the fact that signage has recently been erected at disability parking bays in St Nicholas Quarter telling motorists that the maximum stay in the bay is two hours at any one time.
“At last, Louth County Council is putting up signage with time limits at disabled parking spots in Dundalk. I have been asking for this to happen for years as unfortunately some people are parking in the bays all day when they are at work. The Road Traffic (Parking in Disabled Person’s Parking Bay) Regulations came in three years ago in 2022 and that act basically gave the local authorities around Ireland permission to introduce a time limit of two hours for disabled bays.
There are nineteen disability parking spots that I have counted around Dundalk and at the moment only six of them have signage up warning motorists that they can only park on them for a maximum of two hours. I am looking for all nineteen to have that signage and while I welcome the fact that the new bay in St Nicholas Quarter has signage up I would call on Louth County Council to put signage on the remaining parking bays around the town that don’t have any signage,” explained Brendan.
