Mourners at the funeral of Joshua Hill heard the 10-year-old described as a “ray of light” and were encouraged to celebrate his life.

Joshua, who passed away after a tragic drowning accident in Carlingford, was laid to rest in his home village on Saturday morning.

Hundreds turned out at St Michael’s Church, Carlingford and the nearby cemetery to pay their last respects to the young boy and offer their support to his parents, Peter and Olivia, along with brother Oliver.

Peter Hill told the

congregation that Joshua would be sorely missed as he gave such energy to everything he did and we will always remember him.

He described his son as a “ray of light” and thanked all who came to celebrate his life.

Parish Priest Fr Brian McRaois recalled that Joshua had a great impact on all who knew him.

Dundalk face a battle to stay in the Champions League this evening having been held to a scoreless draw against FC Riga in Oriel Park last Wednesday.

The Lilywhites have had many glorious away nights in Europe in recent years and they will be hoping they can make it another memorable evening for their travelling supporters inside the 9500 seater Skonto stadium.

Dundalk’s black and white army have been making their way to Riga over the last couple of days and are all set for the club’s latest European adventure which has seen them take in the likes of Luxembourg, Croatia, Belarus, Netherlands, Israel, Russia,

Norway, Iceland and Poland in recent years.

Dundalk manager Vinny Perth remains confident that his side can still progress but he faces a nervous wait to see if two of his key players will be able to start the game.

Chris Shields was taken off at half time with a facial injury in the first leg following a collision with teammate Daniel Cleary.

However, he took a full part in training on Sunday and looks like he will be available for selection. There were also concerns that Michael Duffy may be unavailable for the tie when he was forced to race home from the airport on Monday morning after receiving word that his partner was about to give birth.

Dundalk Golf Club’s Brendan Lawlor came out on top when the inaugural EDGA Scottish Open was held alongside the European Tour’s Aberdeen Standard Investments Scottish Open at The Renaissance Club over the weekend.

The 36 hole event featured ten players

from the World Rankings for Golfers with Disability taking each other on over the same layout the European Tour field were tackling in the third Rolex Series event of the season.

Lawlor carded a 77 in round one on Saturday to lie third overnight and produced the

lowest round of the event when he shot a level par 71 to finish on six over, one shot clear of World Number One George Groves.

“It feels great,” said Lawlor after his victory. “Today everything clicked, I smoothed it off the tee, I didn’t miss many fairways and the putts dropped when I needed them to drop. I had a few bogeys coming in but we’ll put that down to a wee bit of nerves.”

“I felt I played a lot better than six over on Saturday. The course was really, really hard and was

playing 7,200 yards with no run on the ball because it was quite wet.

“However, I felt I had a chance being three behind with only two players ahead of me and I got off to the start I wanted to on Sunday.”

Lawlor started the day three shots behind Groves but was brilliant on the front nine, birdieing the fourth, fifth and seventh to lead by one at turn despite dropping a shot on the ninth.

on the first and seventh but dropped shots on the second, third, sixth and eighth, and further bogeys on the tenth and 11th left the Englishman two behind, with Lawlor also bogeying the 11th.

Lawlor dropped a shot on the 13th but moved back two ahead as he picked it straight back up on the next.

A bogey on the 17th then set up a tense finish but Groves parred his final seven holes to leave Lawlor signing for a 71 to claim the title.

Mackin finishes second at Leinster Boys Championship

Dundalk Golf Club’s Josh Mackin went agonisingly close at Waterford Golf Club last week to adding the Leinster Boys U18 Championship to the Ulster title he won a few weeks ago.

He was eventually edged out

by Roscommon’s Simon Walker who won by two shots, but only after Mackin saw his double hopes ended on the final hole of the 54 hole event when he racked up a triple bogey seven having not scored worse than bogey on his previous 53 holes.

There was some consolation after the tournament when Mackin was selected on the Leinster team for the Boys Interprovincial Championships at Athlone Golf

Club from July 23 to 25 and he is still hopeful of making the Irish team for the Home Internationals in August.

Louth mixing with the best in Ireland The County Louth men’s and women’s teams enjoyed another superb day in the second round of this year’s National Track and Field League which was staged recently at the Morton Stadium in Santry, Dublin.

The women’s team finished second of the six teams competing in the top-tier Premier Division in Dublin while the men’s team were third best of the six teams in Division One. After the completion of the two qualifying rounds, the Louth women are ranked second overall of the 12 Premier Division teams nationwide and the county’s men are ranked

fourth of the 12 Division One teams. This mean that both teams are comfortably among the top eight teams who advance to the National League Final in Tullamore on Saturday, 20 July.

for the Wee County in the second round were the Blackrock AC pair Erika Juozapaitė and Aoibhín McMahon. The former won the Long Jump and Triple Jump in some style while the latter enjoyed an impressive double victory in

the Shot Putt and Javelin. Louth’s other event winner in Dublin was Eoghan Smyth, another Blackrock field eventer, who soared to victory in the High Jump.

Several athletes also scored highly by finishing second in their

events – Geraldine Finegan (North East Runners) in both the 400m Hurdles and Pole Vault, Abbie Sheridan (Ardee & District) in both the 1500m and High Jump, Mary Leech (Drogheda & District) in the 3000m, Darren Weldon (Ardee & District) in the Hammer, Tadhg Donnelly (Drogheda & District) in the 800m, Maurice McMahon (North East Runners) in the 5000m, Vitalijus Nikiforovas (Drogheda & District) in the Javelin, and the 4x400m team of Edward McEntee (Dunleer), Tom Cummins (Drogheda & District), Andrew Kelly (Drogheda & District) and Finn Reilly (Dunleer).

Smuggling is bad for environment and jobs Fianna Fáil TD for Louth and East Meath, Declan Breathnach has said cross border coal smuggling is hugely damaging to our environment, along with its obvious impact to our economy.

Following a report by Retailers Against Smuggling, Deputy Breathnach commented that CPL Fuels Ireland estimated between 100,000-500,000 tonnes

of coal are smuggled across the border every year. He pointed out that this represents a loss of €36.5 million to retailers, putting many border traders in Louth out of business and 1,200 jobs at risk.

“The Vat rate on coal is 5% in the North but 8% in the South.

This mean a lorry carrying 26 tonnes of coal here is over

€2,200 more expensive than in the North. There is fears that coal smuggling will increase if carbon tax is doubled in the next Budget. Yesterday I asked the Minister for Finance if carbon tax will be increased but he said no decision had been made.

“An estimated 80 percent of the coal smuggled across the border, is ‘smoky coal’, banned

in Dublin and other areas because of its impact on air quality.

Smoky coal bans have reduced respiratory problems and premature deaths, and yet tonnes of it enters this illegally State every year. We must be tougher on this illicit trade if we are serious about its threats to our economy and the environment,” Deputy Breathnach continued.

The National Lottery has today revealed Ireland’s luckiest EuroMillion counties in new research that analysed the number of top prize winners since the game was launched in 2004.

Ireland’s smallest county, Co. Louth, has topped the table with the most EuroMillions winners per head of population. 25 people in the ‘Wee County’ have won almost €6,982,324 playing EuroMillions in the past 15 years, which means one in just over 5,000 people in Louth has won a top prize playing EuroMillions.

The findings came as one lucky EuroMillions player in Ireland was guaranteed to win €1 million in the EuroMillions ‘Ireland Only Raffle’ on Friday July 5.

Coming a close second place is Co. Mayo, which has clocked up 23 EuroMillions top prize winners who have

shared over €51 million in prizes. That translates into a top prize winner for every 5,700 people in Mayo.

Not far behind Mayo is Co. Limerick, with one EuroMillions top prize winner in every 5,732 people. This is made up of 34 winners sharing over €134.5 million. Limerick’s performance is buoyed by Delores McNamara’s massive €115 million EuroMillions jackpot win in 2005.

At number four is Dublin, which boasts having one EuroMillions top prize winner for every 6,042 people in the county. The capital boasts 223 EuroMillions top prize winners sharing in excess of a whopping €581 million between them, the most recent of which was the Naul Family Syndicate which won Ireland’s record EuroMillions haul of €175 million in

February this year.

There were plenty of celebrations this week in Wexford following last week’s Leinster hurling final so further good news sees Wexford place at number five in the luckiest EuroMillions counties with a top prize winner for every 6,238 people. All in all, the Model county has had 24 winners who have shared more than €8 million in prize monies since the inception of the EuroMillions game. The full table is below.

Speaking on these figures, a National Lottery spokesperson said: “One of the questions we frequently get asked here at the National Lottery, is which county is the luckiest place to buy a EuroMillions ticket.

This is what we sought to find with these statistics. Using data from the 2016 Census combined with our own winner’s

information we were able to crunch the numbers to confirm that Co. Louth is the luckiest EuroMillions County in Ireland.”

Commenting on last Friday’s “Ireland Only Raffle”, the spokesperson continued: “Friday’s EuroMillions draw produced a guaranteed new millionaire in Ireland through the ‘Ireland Only Raffle’ draw”.

“Not only did the raffle see the creation of an instant millionaire, but all EuroMillions players in Ireland will also be in with a chance of winning the EuroMillions jackpot worth an estimated €75 million. Remember you don’t have to rush to Co. Louth to buy your EuroMillions ticket as chance has no memory and playing EuroMillions is purely a matter of luck, regardless of where you buy your ticket,” the spokesperson continued.

New rent pressure zones designated Dundalk Councillor John McGahon has confirmed that Dundalk Carlingford, Dundalk South and Ardee Electoral Areas have been designated as Rent Pressure Zones.

A Rent Pressure Zone (RPZ) is a designated area where rents cannot be increased by more than 4% per annum. This applies to new and existing tenancies said Councillor McGahon.

Speaking on the announcement, Cllr. McGahon said “Minister for Housing Planning and Local Government Eoghan Murphy TD has informed me that he has signed orders to designate Dundalk and Mid Louth as Rent Pressure Zones.

This decision follows on from

Drogheda being given RPZ status two years ago. It now means that all of County Louth is deemed to be a Rent Pressure Zone. The RPZ Zones will come into effect on Tuesday July 2nd.

The designations come on foot of the Residential Tenancies Board’s Rent Index Report for Q1 2019 which was published today and is produced in conjunction with the Economic and Social Research Institute.

The Rent Index Report contains the rent information on which the new designations are based. This decision will bring certainty to Louth households regarding accommodation costs.

As Minister Murphy has reiterated, the Government has put

a lot of time and research into the Rental Strategy and the Rent Pressure Zone initiative to ensure that measures are balanced between helping tenants and the interests of property-owners.

The Minster has also commenced other parts of the Residential Tenancies Act 2019, which make it a criminal offence for landlords to implement rent increases that contravene the law; providing powers to the RTB to investigate and administratively sanction landlords who engage in improper conduct including noncompliance with the rent increase restriction in RPZs and allowing the RTB to initiate an investigation without the need for a complaint to be made.

Primary Care Centre will deliver essential community health services Sinn Féin In Louth has been campaigning for years for a Primary Care Centre in Dundalk for citizens in the north of the county.

On Friday Sinn Féin TD for Louth Gerry Adams and general election candidate Cllr Ruairí Ó Murchú met with Dervila Eyres, the HSE director of Mental Health services for CHO8.

Following the meeting, Gerry Adams said that he wants to work with the HSE Mental Health team to ensure better delivery of services to the people of north Louth.

“The staff we met indicated once again that the best way to provide services is via a Primary Care Centre ‘one stop shop’.

“A Primary Care Centre in Dundalk would contain occupational therapy, physiotherapy, social care, community nursing, psychology, psychiatry, day services and co-ordinate respite and other services for

people with disabilities.

“The Minister for Health has confirmed to me that a Primary Care Centre has been approved for Dundalk”, stated Mr Adams who added that he has raised the unacceptable delays in delivering this project many times.

“Dervila Eyres confirmed to me that the plan is at an advanced stage in the HSE’s Estates Department and

that locally the HSE is making good progress.

“The Minister must ensure that Dundalk Primary Care Centre is kept at the top of the list of projects and I have written to him to ensure that this is so.

Councillor Ruairí Ó Murchu stated: “During this very positive meeting I queried the local delivery of Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services

(CAMHS) and the HSE confirmed that they hope to announce details of a Dundalk based service very soon.

“I have also committed to working with the HSE’s Suicide Prevention Officer to provide links to local community leaders in the Cox’s Demesne and Muirhevnamor areas to address the high levels of suicide in these communities,” he added.

DkIT welcomes new student union executive team Dundalk Institute of Technology (DkIT) is delighted to welcome its new Students Union (SU) Executive Team who officially took up office on July 1. The new team comprises three full-time members including the new SU President, Glenn McCourt, SU Vice President for Student Engagement, Christopher O’Neill and SU Vice President for Welfare & Equality, Taidgh Kavanagh.

This year the SU has expanded to include three full time staff members plus six parttime officers that will be elected in October following significant changes to the Constitution led by the Union of Students in Ireland and voted in favour for by the DkIT student body earlier this year.

Students should look forward to a busy schedule this year as the team have already set in motion planning an array of events for the coming year which range from social events on and off campus to mental health and wellbeing events and guest speakers for students to take part in. Christopher O’Neill, DkIT SU VP for Student Engagement will take the lead on all social activities organised by the SU. Chris hails from Dundalk and has completed his first year of the BB (Hons) in Business. Chris is a Sports Scholarship student who is a massive personality within DkITs

Sports and Societies.

He has represented the college in both GAA and Boxing and countless events off campus such as Dundalk 10k and local school visits.

Also speaking today, he added: “I look forward to having the students back on campus in September, we have a lot planned and I can’t wait get the buzz back about the campus, college should be a place where students can thrive socially as well as academically and I aim to get the social aspect on par.”

All three team members have set their sights on creating a more inclusive campus with events to cater for all aspects of college life and our diverse student body.

Seán Kelly elected Chairperson of Joint Policing Committee

Cllr Seán Kelly, newly elected Councillor for Dundalk Carlingford electoral area, has been elected as Chair of Dundalk’s Joint Policing Committee (JPC) at the July meeting of Dundalk Municipal District.

The function of the JPC is to provide a dedicated Cllr Sean Kelly. forum to support consultation, cooperation and synergy on policing and crime issues between An Garda Síochána, local authority officials, elected representatives and the community and voluntary sectors.

Kelly wants to use his term in office to highlight some of the issues facing communities in Dundalk and North Louth, both urban and rural.

He believes that anti-social behaviour, drugs and burglaries continue to cast a dark cloud over the community and we need to address this in a proactive manner.

Kelly commented ‘people should not be afraid to open their doors at night or go for a walk, we shouldn’t live in fear that our property is in danger. We have seen several disturbing incidents in Dundalk in recent weeks and we do not want this to escalate to the same levels as we are seeing in Drogheda. I look forward to working with the Gardai and other vested interests in order to put in place preventive community policing methods.’

Call to increase fuel allowance

Fianna Fáil TD for Louth Declan Breathnach has called on the Government to increase the Fuel Allowance in the upcoming Budget, to help families be able to afford to buy coal legally rather than relying on the black market.

Deputy Breathnach commented: “28% of people in Ireland are in Energy Poverty.

Unfortunately, more and more people are turning to buying illegal smuggled coal because it is cheaper.

A carbon tax increase will only make this worse “.

He continued “The Vat rate on coal is 5% in the North but 8% in the Republic. This means that lorries carrying tonnes of coal here are much more expensive than in the North. Our VAT rate on coal should be decreased to come in line with the North’s rate, or else we are only making the illicit trade more lucrative. “ “100,000-500,000 tonnes of coal are smuggled across the border every year, representing a loss of €36.5 million to retailers,” he added..

Gerry Adams raises town’s disadvantaged communities in Dáil

Louth Sinn Féin TD Gerry Adams has urged the Government to live up to its Programme for Government commitments to people living in disadvantaged areas across Dundalk.

Deputy Adams said that he pressed Minister Simon Coveney on the Government’s pledge to improve the “quality of life for our younger and older people in the most disadvantaged communities”.

“In Dundalk the communities of Oldbridge, Fatima, Cox’s Demesne and Muirhevnamor have been identified in Pobal’s Deprivation Index as areas of significant disadvantage. In many communities deprivation has worsened since 2011.

“Councillor Ruairí Ó Murchú and I have met many times with the people working in The Redeemer Centre in Cox’s Demesne, in Muirhevnamor Community Centre and in other community groups located in the heart of these communities.

“They work hard to support people and to bring opportunities into areas facing high levels of crime, unemployment, drug mis-

use, poverty and social isolation,” continued Deputy Adams.

“We all know that these communities are made up of wonderful people who are under huge social and economic pressures and we also know that suicide is a big issue in our society at this time.

“There is a particular cluster of suicide in Dundalk, in Cox’s Demense and Murihevnamor. “The Manager of the Redeemer Centre, in Cox’s Demesne, Colin Roche, has asked Pobal to fund a ‘community audit’ across north Louth, to properly identify these issues.

“I asked the Government to support this request for a community audit to identify the gaps in the current allocation of resources in Dundalk and options for the future.

“Minister Coveney’s reply acknowledged the seriousness of the issues I raised and he has committed to make enquiries in the relevant Government departments.

“I have followed up today’s remarks by writing to Pobal urging them to support the community audit request,” concluded Mr Adams.

Locals pay tribute to Brendan

Friends and family of the late Brendan Grace packed out Church of St Nicholas of Myra on Francis Street in Dublin as they said goodbye to one of Ireland’s most loved comedians.

Amongst the mourners were Dundalk couple Patsy Rogers and Mary Keenan who had been close friends with Brendan for over 25 years.

According to Patsy the Dublin comic was one of the funniest most genuine people you could ever wish to meet and he admitted the ceremony on Monday afternoon was very emotional.

“It was a beautiful ceremony which was wonderfully led

by Brendan’s long-time friend Fr Brian D’Arcy. It was very emotional but also funny as well with Fr D’Arcy saying that Brendan had asked him to organise a merchandise stall for the back of the church to sell some of his old dvd’s,” laughed Patsy.

“Through my work in booking shows I met Brendan for the first time in the Park Hotel in Omeath in 1994 and we have been personal friends ever since. He absolutely

loved this whole area and his old Fairways Hotel shows were always sold out months in advance. Brendan actually played the very last show in it before it closed.

“After that the Carrickdale became Brendan’s home and he had great time for the owner John McParland. Myself and my partner Mary spent lovely times in Brendan and his wife Ellen’s home in Killaloe, Co. Clare and from the first time we stepped foot in the place we were told to treat it like our own home.

“He was such a generous man and would often spend two hours after his show signing photographs. Cooley Kickhams U14 girls headed west recently to compete in Feile 2019 and were hosted by St Michaels GAA club, Westside, Galway city.

After some excellent performances the team reached the Division 3 Final in Mayo where they played An Charraig Mhor. The Tyrone side started strong with 3 points in succession.

Cooley settled and responded with 3 points of their own. An Charraig Mhor finished stronger and added another 1-2 to Cooley’s 0-1 to go in at half time 1-5 to Cooley’s 0-4. Cooley came out strong in the second half, scores were very hard won.

Family fun as The Marshes host enchanted gardens

Dominant Dundalk overpower Malahide

Dundalk Cricket Club stormed to a resounding first home win in their new pitch at Hiney Park on Sunday. Facing a tough test against a Malahide team that had already beaten them earlier in the season, Dundalk comfortably chased down a target of 213 runs.

Malahide won the toss and captain Brian Gilmore elected to bat first. They started their innings brightly, with Adam Doyle and Subhadip Roy scoring the bulk of the early runs.

Dundalk hit back, however, with Mudassar Rafique (2-34) claiming both wickets in the space of two overs.

Despite being rattled briefly, Malahide stead-

ied their ship and a composed partnership between Gilroy (51 not out) and Ryan Condron (23 not out) saw them bat out their allotted 40 overs with a total of 213 runs.

Facing a challenging target, Dundalk could have been forgiven for beginning their response cautiously. That was not the thought on the mind of Muhammed Zahid, however, who blasted his way out of the blocks from the very first ball. With a swashbuckling performance, Zahid smashed boundary after boundary to push Dundalk past the halfway mark in just 10 overs. He fell just short of a maiden century though, caught for 96

runs with Dundalk in a commanding position.

After Zahid fell, Dundalk’s middle order wobbled slightly, with Syed Shah and Darshan Patel getting out cheaply against a resolute Malahide bowling attack. Kapil Pun played a big part in stabilising the run chase, providing much needed defence while Umer Khan followed in Zahid’s footsteps and went on the attack.

With a flurry of stylish strokes, Khan brought up his half-century and pushed Dundalk within sight of the target. His partnership with Shakeel Qamar (the pair finishing 68 and 9 not out, respectively) saw Dundalk over the line with more than 10 overs

to spare.

A remarkable first win at home for Dundalk brings them momentum at just the right time in the season. They travel to Merrion next Sunday before a double header against DLR County and Railway Union at home on the 20th and 21st of July.

Training continues on Wednesday nights at the club’s pitch behind Oriel Park. The club is also starting its Youth Training camp from Thursday 18th July 2019 which is dedicated for 10-17 year old boys and girls.

Speaking at the the launch of the Local Link for Rural Transport Programme for Louth Meath and Fingal Four Year Strategic Plan 2019-2022, Cllr. McGahon said “Flexibus is now in its 16th year of providing rural accessible transport services.

The programme, which will take place in venues across Louth in September and October, aims to get adults and children reading, thinking, and talking.

Drop in car running costs but insurance crisis continues

The average cost of running a family car for a year is €10,593.26 according to the AA’s annual survey of motoring costs. The total is a decrease of €98.11 on the same figure for last year, according to the AA’s calculations.

According to the CSO’s Consumer Price Index the average cost of insurance has dropped by 6.7% compared between June 2018 and June 2019. This is not even across the market however, and the motoring organisation says that the small reduction has only benefitted the mainstream market of motorists with conventional risk profiles. Groups like returning immigrants, young drivers and those with penalty points or a claims history, still pay inordinately high prices in the ongoing insurance costs crisis.

In better news, according to the AA’s monthly fuel prices survey the average cost of a litre of fuel has dropped by 2.5% in the last 12 months. However, the AA highlighted that the most recent drop in fuel prices came after a period of significant increases at the pump earlier in 2019.

The average price of petrol at 143.9 cent per litre as of June 2019 is down approximately 3.7c per litre on the price 12 months ago. For a typical motorist in a Band B car this means they will pay €1,665 for their year’s fuel, down from €1,707. Of this figure, over 60% is made up of various taxes.

It’s true that some progress has been made in this space, but with each passing month it begins to feel more and more that government have moved their attention onto other matters and that motorists are simply being forced to get used to higher insurance prices,” Conor Faughnan, AA Director of Consumer Affairs stated. “This is particularly true for anyone with an abnormal or non-standard driving history. Whether it is the case of a young driver or a returning emigrant, these cohorts are still seeing massive insurance bills particularly in year one of driving in Ireland.”

Each year the AA calculates average prices for each of the respective tax bands and illustrates

the cost of running an average family car. The cost of running a ‘Band B’ category car decreased by 0.92% in 2019 when compared to the 2018 figure.

Other motoring costs did not change significantly with only slight adjustments to be made.

This is reflected in the AA’s calculation of the cost of oil, tyres, servicing, repairs, replacements and garage parking.

The AA calculates the annual cost of motoring each year using a holistic figure that includes the obvious things like fuel, insurance, servicing but also factors in a whole range of other costs.

These include costs like depreciation and interest charges, as well as replacement for components such as tyres etc. over the car’s life. The figure assumes a motorist that buys a new car and retains it for 8 years at an average annual mileage of 16,000 kms. All repairs, replacements and servicing are carried out as per manufacturer’s recommendations.
