Brave victim sets example to others A victim of domestic violence has been praised for her honesty and courage, while also being hailed as an example to other women in a similar situation to come forward.

Judge Flann Brennan also praised the decency of the woman whose charity allowed the assailant to avoid a jail term, as she stated she only wanted it acknowledged that she wasn’t a liar.

Business may be hit by road closure

By Paul Byrne Louth County Council will put livelihoods and businesses at risk if they go ahead with their plan to close the N53 DundalkCastleblayney Road for a three-month period according to one local businessman.

Peter Finnegan who runs a shop in Hackballscross says many businesses along the route rely on passing trade to survive and has urged council officials to put a more reasonable plan in place.

The 1.1km stretch of road is due to be closed in August until November.

Louth County Council say the inconvenience will be short term and the resulting road improvements will be long term gain for the residents and the ever increasing number of users of the road.

A public meeting will be held in Naomh Malachi clubrooms next Monday June 22.

Family call to support MND fundraiser Dundalk Leader 17th June 2015

A local family are encouraging people to show their support for Motor Neuron Disease in the run up to MND/ ALS Global Awareness Day. Peter and Patricia Stewart from Muirhevnamor lost their 21 year old daughter Siobhan to the disease in July 2011 and are strongly encouraging people to donate.

The family will be attending a Drink Tea for MND event hosted in Byrne’s pub next

weekend to show their support for MND/ALS Global Awareness day which takes place on June 21st.

Friends and family will gather in the pub to drink tea and coffee whilst raising money for the disease.

The Irish Motor Neuron Disease Association have been encouraging people across the country to raise funds and awareness by holding a tea day or cake sale in local pubs, clubs or simply at work with colleagues.

Peter described how important events like Drink Tea for MND are in order to raise funds and awareness for the disease: “We like to keep the awareness going each year for the condition, to try and get people aware. Our daughter Catriona is also doing an abseil in Croke Park in October to raise money for the IMNDA”.

The event is being run by the Irish Motor Neuron Disease Association and involves participants’ abseiling 100ft

from the roof of Croke Park’s Hogan Stand.

Peter also mentioned a friend of the family, Nicole Connolly who is hoping to raise awareness of the disease by doing a parachute jump in August.

The Drink Tea for MND event will be held in Byrne’s pub on Hill Street on Friday 26th of June where people will come together to drink tea and coffee. There will also be cakes and buns available on the day.

Ashamed at finding himself back in court A man who admitted he was ashamed to find himself in court apologised for his behaviour on a night out which he described as being out of character.

Despite having 17 previous convictions, Anthony Linanne of 45 Low Road, Meigh, Newry, had been out of trouble for seven years as he told Dundalk District Court that he had matured after getting married and becoming a father.

The court heard that on Saturday May 30 this year, Gardai were called to the Carrickdale Hotel where the defendant had been asked to leave by staff and Gardai.

He was extremely intoxicated and aggressive.

Mr Linanne stated that such behaviour was now out of character as he had grown up since getting married and having children. He apologised to the Gardai and the issue he had with the hotel had been resolved, while adding that he was ashamed to be in court.

Judge Flann Brennan stated that he would give the defendant a chance by finding the facts proven and dismissing the case but warned that he couldn’t promise he would be dealt with as leniently in the future.

Exhibition at Square A photographic exhibition of children with Down Syndrome taken by Kerry photographer Dan Murphy will visit Dundalk this month as part of a nationwide tour.

The exhibition is

touring the country and is in Dundalk at Market Square from June 18 to 25.

The exhibition seeks to reveal the individuality of each of the children rather than the syndrome they carry.

It is a celebration

of childhood and an occasion for friends and families to celebrate those they love, who have Down Syndrome.

The exhibition will be opened by the chairperson of Dundalk Municipal District, Cllr Maria Doyle.

Must pay compensation for breaking teeth A Dundalk man who assaulted another man outside a bar breaking two teeth in the process, has been given the chance to avoid a jail term.

Edward Larrigan of 90 Riverside Drive, Red Barns Road, will be able to serve 200 hours of Community Service if found suitable and if he pays a total

of €4,000 compensation to the victim.

The courts heard that on February 15 this year a man attended Dundalk Garda Station to make an allegation of assault outside on Park St during which he sustained two broken teeth. Mr Larrigan was subsequently arrested in relation to the offence.

Solicitor, Niall Lavery, stated that his client was anxious to raise the €1,200 compensation required for dental treatment and could do so in four or five weeks. He would need further time if more compensation was required.

Mr Lavery added that his client had no history of crimes for

violence and was dealing with this issue head on.

Judge Flann Brennan, said he would recommend 200 hours Community Service in lieu of nine months, and that €4,000 compensation would be required. The case was adjourned to July 1 for the initial €1,200 to be paid.

Consistent with the national drive to fight obesity and encourage healthy eating, Dundalkbased banana importers Fyffes has released a tablet app to encourage young children to ‘Go Bananas’.

Upset after granny’s window broken

Two young men who became very upset after their grandmother’s windows were broken decided to deal with the incident themselves rather than contacting Gardai.

As a result, the brothers, Gavin and Barry Gray from 341 Beechmount Drive, Cox’s Demesne, Dundalk, found themselves coming to the attention of the Gardai after getting involved in an altercation.

Dundalk District Court heard that Gardai were alerted to an incident at Patrick St where they stopped a vehicle driven by Gavin

Gray in which Barry Gray was a passenger. They had been in an altercation where extendable batons were produced and CS gas, which is classified as an offensive weapon, was found in the car.

The other man who was involved in the altercation made no complaint to Gardai.

Solicitor, Peter Lavery, stated that the defendants, who were aged 18 and 21, believed that the individual concerned had smashed their grandmother’s windows twice.

He added that they realise they should have contacted Gardai but

were angry and decided to deal with it themselves.

“They are very sorry for their actions, he added.

Mr Lavery pointed out that Gavin Gray was very surprised that CS gas was found in the car, and added that other people had also been in the car.

“The acted on an instinct and they shouldn’t have done, and they know they can’t do it again in the future”, explained Mr Lavery whose clients pleaded guilty to charges of affray and possession of an article with intent to cause injury.

Louth GPs slow to sign up for new free system

By Paul Byrne LOUTH GPs have been amongst the slowest in the country to sign up to the free GP care for under 6s scheme with only 22% of GPs in the County having signed so far.

Only Tipperary South at 8% lies below Louth in the table.

According to Health Minister Leo Varadkar uptake nationally is on average about 60% so far and he expects this figure to rise to between 80 and 90% by the end of the year.

Figures released by the HSE on the afternoon of Friday, June 12, showed huge regional variation in the uptake of the scheme among GPs, with 94 per cent having signed up in Donegal compared to just 8 per cent in South Tipperary, where just four of 51 GPs have done so.

Parents of under 6s could register online as of from Monday June 15 for which they will require their own PPS number as well as the PPS number of their child.

The scheme is due to commence on July 1, after which time almost 300,000 children will be able to visit their GP free of charge.

There have been a number of worries expressed by GPs around the country regarding the scheme who argue that far from improving the Irish health system the scheme is going to put immense pressure on the system, pushing back waiting times as well as reducing consultation times.

Earlier this year the scheme was rejected by the National Association of general Practitioners with it’s chairman Dr Andy Jordan stating: “This deal amounts to

nothing more than medial apartheid. It is motivated by election votes rather than real patient need. The mortality rate in children less than 18 years of age is 3.8/10,000 and the vast majority of those are caused by accidents not illness.

At the same time we have 5,000 deaths per year in Ireland from cardiovascular disease but there is no money to provide free GP care to those patients.”

So far 14 GPs have signed up to the scheme in Co. Louth including three from Dundalk. The Government says free GP care for under-6s is the first stage in the roll-out of universal free GP care.

Over 70s will be covered from early August.

Garden celebration raises funds for charity The Dundalk Garden Centre’s 40th anniversary event, the ‘Gardening Day Out’, took place on Saturday June 6. Hundreds of guests attended the event and took part in the various talks, demonstrations and workshops.

The centre’s raffle was a massive success, exceeding all expectations and raising €630 for the Irish Cancer Society.

Eimear Kellett, a local representative of the Irish Cancer Society, came to the centre and was pre-

sented with a cheque from the Dundalk Garden Centre staff.

Show. From a bit closer to home, local expert Pamela Whitaker conducted a workshop on ‘The Family Herb Garden’, while bee keeper Eoghan Mac Giolla Coda discussed bee keeping and bee friendly gardening.

Disqualified for three years

A man who pleaded guilty to a drink driving charge was disqualified for three years at Dundalk District Court.

Kenneth Walsh of 64 Ashbrook, Dundalk, was involved in a traffic accident on the Avenue Road on January 15 this year.

He failed to stop but shortly afterwards crashed again.

He admitted drinking an hour beforehand and a breath sample showed that he was over the limit.

Solicitor, Frank McDonnell, stated that the 31-year-old married father of two, was insured at the time and the

injured parties had been looked after.

He added the disqualification will be a blow to his chances of returning to the workforce.

Judge Brennan also imposed a €300 fine in relation to the drink driving charge and a €100 fine and six month ban for failing to stop.

Sour ending to First Communion day Celebrations to mark a First Holy Communion ended with Gardai being called to a hotel and resulted in a husband and wife appearing at Dundalk District Court.

Noel McDonagh and Caroline McDonagh of 54 Grange Drive, Muirhevnamor, Dundalk, pleaded guilty to charges arising out of the incident when they were celebrating their son’s First Communion at the Fairways Hotel.

The court heard that Noel McDonagh caused a total of €247 worth of damage to a door at the hotel on that occasion.

Solicitor, Frank McDonnell,

stated that his client had been standing outside the hotel when an incident occurred inside involving his wife. The door was locked and when he looked in he saw his wife in physical difficulty and being restrained. He caused the damage when he kicked the door.

Mr McDonnell conceded that the arrival of his client inside would not have been much help, and added that Mr McDonagh, who is in his 40s, hadn’t set out to cause the damage.

Barrister, Irene Sands, stated that Caroline McDonagh had been asked to leave the hotel and she

wasn’t sure why. She became angry and kicked someone, although she wasn’t wearing shoes. When the Gardai arrived, she struck one of them unintentionally.

She added that it had been a long day for the 37-year-old mother of five and drink had been taken by her client who didn’t ordinarily drink. She is anxious not to appear in court again.

Judge Flann Brennan placed Mrs McDonagh on probation for six months to check that she continues to do well, while Mr McDonagh was fined €200 and ordered to pay €247 compensation.

More medals for Dundalk Karate club Dundalk Karate recently travelled to Philipstown where they trained with Sensei Barry Wilkinson 8th Dan, who is the Vice President of the Federation of WadoKai Europe and Head of England Wado-Kai. members of CIKA Ireland (Champions International Karate Association) and with Grading also coming up next weekend, but we are enjoying every aspect of our training”, she stated.

cently set up by Sensei Junior Lefevre, who is two times WKF World Kumite Champion and nine times European Karate Federation (EKF) European Kumite Champion and a 25 times Belgian National Karate Champion, and with the organisation being a multi-style one with members worldwide the future is looking busy for Dundalk Karate.

Dundalk Karate trained with Sensei Lefevre earlier this year along with Sensei Lucraft and with numerous other opportunities to train with numerous other World Champions in the pipeline for Dundalk Karate

along with the very first CIKA Ireland Competition which is being held in Dublin in September where a squad from CIKA Belgium and CIKA England will be in attendance along with numerous other squads, Dundalk Karate are stepping up to the challenge and going from strength to strength. Not only will Dundalk Karate be continuing with their regular training for an upcoming grading next weekend, but they will continue to train throughout the summer months in the Redeemer Family Resource Centre, where they train every Monday and Thursday evening.

Old Dundalk Society summer outing The Old Dundalk Society (ODS) had a very successful outing recently to Co Down. The tour was ably led by local man Hugh Smyth, who acted as tour guide for the day.

The Society’s first stop was Downpatrick, where a visit was made to the

‘Down Cathedral’ and interpretative centre.

Having been fortified with coffee and scones the next stop on the tour was a visit, having crossed Strangford Lough by ferry, to Mount Stewart House and gardens. The gardens were voted one of the top

ten gardens in the world, reflecting a rich tapestry of design and planting artistry.

The final stop on the outing was a tour of Hillsborough Castle and gardens, a Georgian mansion which is the residence of the Royal Family when visiting the six counties.

Afterwards the group enjoyed a sumptuous dinner at the Belmont Hotel in Banbridge, Michael Gaynor President (ODS) stated during his after dinner address, that the society has gone from strength to strength in recent years, with a renewed interest in local his-

tory the society boasts a membership over 200.

Planning for the autumn/ winter schedule of lectures and events was already at an advanced stage.

The tour returned to Dundalk in the late evening and a very enjoyable day was had by all.

Scoil Mhuire na Trócaire was crowned the overall winner of the Louth County Council Primary Schools’ Environmental Awards held in the Crowne Plaza hotel last Thursday.

A total of 36 primary schools from the length and breadth of the county participated in the awards which recognise the work primary school staff and pupils do in environmental education and care. This year’s competition was restructured and rebranded under the new name

“Grow” which stands for Green, Renewable, Organic, Waste Minimisation.

Scoil Mhuire na Trócaire received a “5-star” status from the judges and was awarded the highest marks by the judges for their outstanding environmental projects, education and the overall appearance of their extensive school grounds. There was further success for the Ardee girls when they were also awarded the prestigious “School of the Year Award”.

Scoil Mhuire na Trócaire is one of the leading schools in the county for environmental education and care with an amazing eight green flag awards under their belt and currently working towards their 9th Green Flag for “Global Citizenship-Energy”.

This is a school fully committed to environmental education and presenting their school to a very high standard both inside and out.

The school also received a special award for Biodiversity. The

school grounds are a gardener’s dream with many beautiful features.

They have an orchard, fruit bushes, herb garden, while the biodiversity and wild-life garden also features an insect hotel, dead-hedge hotel, bird mansion, bee and butterfly garden, rockery and pond. Their vegetable plots were singled out for special praise by the judges Jasmine Carroll, 6th class, received a special award as the school’s nominee for “Junior Environmentalist”.

A well-known local hairdresser is set to embark on her 14th trip to South Africa as she continues to help poor children in South Africa as part of the Mellon Educate programme.

Karen McArdle, owner of Chaplin’s hairdressers in the Clanbrassil Centre in Dundalk, has volunteered with Mellon Educate for the past 13 years and has signed up once again to travel to rural South Africa this coming November .

During the week of the Building Blitz, the volunteers will work extremely hard to build/renovate a school for very poor children in the Eastern Cape of South Africa.

Mellon Educate has built/renovated five schools since 2013 changing the educational landscape for over 5,500 children.

This would not have been possible without the commitment from volunteers like Karen.

Last Thursday and Friday she held a book and bake sale in the Long Walk Shopping Centre which according to Karen proved to be a huge success thanks to the generosity of the people of Dundalk.

Louth County Council say the inconvenience will be short term and the resulting road improvements will be long term gain for the residents and the ever increasing number of users of the road.

A public meeting will be held in Naomh Malachi clubrooms next Monday June 22 and all interested parties are urged to attend to voice their opposition to the plan.

A statement from Louth County Council insisted that the road needed to be closed for three months to ensure safe construction for both the workmen and the public as well

“The reason for the road closure is due to safety. This is improvement of an online section (meaning directly over the existing route unlike earlier improvement works that were off line), there is substantial amounts of cut and fill on the road section being improved, the road closure is to facilitate safe construction for both the workmen and the travelling public.

There is over 4m of cut in one area and it is not possible to carry out this scale of excavation safely without rerouting the traffic away from the works area.

Having a road closure will allow the contractor in question to complete the works as quickly and cost effectively as possible.

“National route traffic will be diverted via the N2 to Carrickmacross and local traffic will be diverted via county roads around the area.

“Louth County Council are intent to deliver a quality service in the reconstruction of the N53 in as cost effective and or course safe manner as possible. We regret any inconvenience that may result due to the road closure. The inconvenience will be short term and the resulting road improvements will be long term gain for the residents and the ever increasing number of users of the road.”

Redeemer NS Sports Day

Redeemer boys and Girls school held their annual sports and fun day last Friday and it proved to be a huge success once more thanks to the hard work of the teachers and parents committee.

The Sports Day was organised and paid for the very active parents association in the Redeemer and included bouncy castles, face-painting, food stalls and a DJ to help create a wonderful family atmosphere.

teacher was delighted with the success of the sports day and praised the parents association for putting it all together.

“We are very lucky to have a very active and involved parents association here in the Redeemer and they work tirelessly throughout the year raising money to help put on events like this today. This has all been organised and paid for by the parents and as you can see it’s a day which the children always look forward to every year”, explained Sinead.

“We have a shop and raffles going on here today and all

funds raised go straight back into children’s activities for the school. Thankfully we have had a glorious day of sunshine again this year for our sports day and it’s great to see so many happy children enjoying their day”, she added.

School principal Frank Mullen also thanked the parents association for their help in putting on the sports day.

“I hope everybody really enjoyed our Sports Day. The staff are indebted to the Parents Association for all their work in preparing for our big day Maith Sibh”, he stated.

Dundalk based band The Corrs announced their intentions to reunite last week.

The band, which is made up of siblings, Andrea, Caroline, Sharon and Jim revealed the news during an interview on BBC Radio 2.

Andrea, the lead singer of the group said they were in the process of making a new record: “It feels just right to do this. It’s exciting.

We emerged after our lives going in different directions – babies and stuff”, she said.

Locals and visitors from Dundalk were on hand to give their opinion about the news of the bands reunion.

Kevin John and his wife Breda described the band as fantastic.

“They really were a quality band. It’s great to see them getting back together. We travelled to Australia years ago and they were very popular over there”, said Kevin.

Breda was also a fan of the band back in the

Race 1 saw Liam Burns eventually drop Jason Malone after a ding dong battle between the pair, with Brendan Callaghan in third. Race 2 saw an epic battle between 4 riders, David Hoey, John Noone, Greg Clifford and Paul Durnin, that went on over the eight laps.

David Hoey and John Noone managed to pull away towards the end, to finish first and second respectively. Greg Clifford came home in third. Round 9 sees the riders battle the elements on the open mountain.

The Corrs are set to reunite for a gig this September after more than 10 years apart.

They band revealed that they will be playing together on BBC Radio 2 Live in Hyde Park on September 13.

There has been huge interest in the event again this year. We’re hoping to do just as well as last year which was the best attended raft race in the event’s history.

This year marks the

20th year in the event’s history and offers a huge range of activities for the whole family.

The day will be kicked off with a recital from the Dundalk Brass band at the sundial, followed by the hugely popular sandcastle competition.

The main event of the day, the raft race, will begin at 3pm and will see several local businesses battling it out on the sea for that much coveted first place.

Larry described how

the race will be run on the day: “There will be three heats with the teams who come in first, second and third place in each heat all securing a place in the final” There will also be a helicopter display on the day which will be provided by the Irish Coast Guard as well as a game of Cricket with Dundalk Cricket Club.

Junior Poc Fada and a schools talent competition will also take place on the day.

Other activities to ensure that everyone is kept well entertained on the day include face painting, amusements and a bumper raffle offering some fantastic prizes including a 32” Smart TV and a Night at the Races.

All proceeds from the event will go towards the maintenance of Blackrock village.

The event will begin at 2pm on Sunday and is free of charge.

A man who was described as having an appalling record was told that his attempts to turn his life around had come too late to save him from a prison sentence.

Gerard Soraghan of Dunmahon, Knockbridge, was sentenced to a total of 12 months when he pleaded guilty to assault and criminal damage at Dundalk District Court.

Insp Martin Beggy stated that on March 14 last year Gardai were called to Hoeys Lane where a man had been assaulted at a party by the defendant and another man. The incident followed a verbal altercation and when the victim walked away he was kicked and punched with the result that he lost two teeth.

The defendant also pleaded

guilty to causing €3,133.48 damage to a car at Lis na Dara on June 24, 2013.

Solicitor, Frank McDonnell, stated that his client, who will be 26 in July, has a record that got worse as time went on. He described him as the archetypal individual who would be described as a sound young man when he didn’t have drink. He got a job as a barman when he was young and took to drinking after work.

He accepts that he struck the man at the party and although he has little recollection of the incident with the car but accepts that he did it.

Mr McDonnell stated that his client had undergone a residential programme to deal with his alcohol problem and that he hadn’t had a drink

since April. He stated that Mr Soraghan wanted the court to note that he had done something about his difficulties.

He is looking for work and that would be potential for compensation.

Judge Flann Brennan stated that the assault was extremely serious and taking into consideration all that was said, he imposed a nine month sentence.

He noted that the second offence was committed while on bail and imposed a threemonth consecutive sentence for criminal damage.

“Notwithstanding the efforts he has made, he has an appalling record but that came effectively too late”, noted Judge Brennan who fixed recognisances in the event of an appeal.

Over €100,000 for Louth coastal protection works Fine Gael TD for Louth, Peter Fitzpatrick, has welcomed the allocation of €114,300 for minor flood mitigation and coastal protection works in Louth.

“Protecting our coastline, as well as homes and businesses

along the coast is extremely important.

This funding will make a big difference in protecting the coastline in Louth and it will help us to plan for the future.

€13,500 will be used to repair the sea defence; €10,800 will be used to construct a rock armour revetment at Annagasson, in Bullurgan €9,000 will be spent on placing a rock armour along the embankment and €81,000

has been allocated to carry out a coastal erosion risk management study in Dundalk Bay. “All of these works are very worthwhile but the risk management study which will cover Greenore, Dillionstown and

Blackrock is especially positive as it looks to the future for Dundalk Bay and will assess how we can protect our coast.

“The coastline in county Louth is an attraction for tourists and a wonderful amenity

for local people. I look forward to seeing these works completed and to hearing the recommendations of the report which will influence the next steps to be taken to protect the county’s coastline.”

In imposing a 12 month sentence, which was suspended for a year, the judge told Mr Rogan that he was very fortunate.

“You behaved in a disgraceful and cowardly manner in assaulting a

lady and a mother. If it wasn’t for what she said today, I wouldn’t have suspended the sentence.

You have this lady’s decency and charity to thank for the fact that you are not going to jail.

The court heard that the victim and Mr Rogan had been out celebrating his 30th birthday on January 1, 2012. Mr Rogan went home after being unable to get into a night club and shortly afterwards, his partner at the

time, returned.

Mr Rogan accused the victim of being with one of his friends resulting in her asking him to leave the house.

She went upstairs to her daughter and was followed by the defendant who punched her on the head, and was assaulted again when she went back downstairs.

Her daughter followed and as they tried to escape out of the window, Mr Rogan took her daughter

out of her arms and pushed her out of the window, resulting in her landing in a trailer of logs.

He then went outside and continued to assault her, before neighbours arrived.

Solicitor Conor MacGuill put it to the victim that the incident did not happen, which she denied.

Gardai attended but Mr Rogan would not come out of the house. However, there were called back

Three members of Team Torres travelled to Ballymena last weekend to compete in the Next Generation Submission Only Grappling Competition.

Unlike points based competitions, where an opponent can win by obtaining a dominant position over their opponent, in a Submission Only competition the only way to win is to force your opponent to

essentially give up and this is usually achieved by either effecting a choke hold on your opponent or a joint lock from which your opponent cannot escape.

The club was ably represented by Andrew McGahon , Ryan McCartney and Barry Quaile. Both Andrew and Ryan clinched gold in their respective weight sections in the Advance Division.

While Barry cleaned out both the Intermediate division at his weight and also the Absolute divison which included all weights.

Later this month members of the team travel to Cork to compete at the All Star Grappling Submission only event, followed in early July by The Summer Smackdown Submission only competition being held in

some time later when he was outside and highly intoxicated, and subsequently arrested. When questioned by Gardai he repeatedly stated that he did not remember what happened because he was drunk.

In evidence, Mr Rogan stated that he had said that at the time because he thought it was the same as saying ‘no comment’.

There had been an argument but nothing physical. It was the victim’s habit of using the window to get in and out of the house as she was always losing her keys.

However, in making his ruling, Judge Brennan, was in no doubt that the victim was telling the truth.

“If Gerard Rogan has given evidence and I am to accept it, then the victim has concocted a high-

ly devious body of evidence in order to pursue a false claim. I am not satisfied at all and I am satisfied beyond all doubt that the charge has been proved.

“Gerard Rogan’s evidence is very accurate today but he didn’t say in his statement that he didn’t want to comment, he just said that his recollection failed”, he stated.

Mr Rogan was also fined €200 in relation to a public order charge.

Farm chief hopeful Realt na Mara sports over BSE scare

The IFA Chairman in Co. Louth has expressed his disappointment following the news of a suspected BSE case on a dairy farm just outside Louth Village but says he is hopeful that market prices for farmers won’t be adversely affected.

Matthew McGreehan was speaking in the wake of last Thursday’s announcement by the Department of Agriculture which confirmed that a suspected case of BSE was found in a five year old cow with an 80% chance that the tests will come back positive. The animal was not presented for slaughter and did not enter the food chain and was identified through the Department’s ongoing surveillance system of animals which die on farms according to the

Reacting to the announcement by the Department of Agriculture Matthew McGreehan praised the systems which were in place which he said were second to none

“Obviously we were all very disappointed with the news of a suspected BSE case in Co. Louth but we are hopeful that this won’t have any effect on market prices which have been good for our farmers recently.

Unfortunately with any disease like this it is very hard to completely eradicate it but it is very important to note that the systems we have in place are second to none and this shows that they are working well.

“We were also able to trace the cow’s calves and all cows associated with it in very quick time thanks to the controls we use. The major issue here is the fact that we have secured many markets for farmers in recent months and years and I would be hopeful that none of these will be affected by this news.

This particular case involved a five-year old cow sent to a knackery for disposal from a Louth dairy farm and the Department of Agriculture is awaiting tests to confirm the situation, which we hope will be given to us by the weekend”, McGreehan concluded.

BSE is associated with contaminated feed and the investigation will include looking at what the cow was fed early in its life.

BSE was a huge issue in Ireland in the early part of this century costing the farming community millions of euro with figures peaking in Ireland in 2002 with 333 cases.

When a feed ban was introduced in 2001 numbers dropped dramatically leading to a situation where zero cases were found last year.

Improvements being made to access Higher Education DkIT is one of two Institutes of Technology, two universities and ten education training boards are, together, planning to improve access to higher education. The Department of Education and Skills is projecting that by 2028 there will be almost 50,000 additional undergraduates in our Third Level institutions. These extra students will need to be adequately accommodated and this has led to DkIT President, Denis Cummins, declaring “this is the right time to look at how best this demand might be met.”

Athlone Institute of Technology (AIT), Dublin City University (DCU), Dundalk Institute of Technology (DkIT) and Maynooth University (MU); (collec-

tively known as the Midlands, East and North Dublin (MEND) Cluster) have a strong track record of successful collaboration. The Cluster members, supported by the Higher Education Authority, have been developing practical solutions to improve access to Third Level with a strong focus on improving the transition from further education to higher education.

Recently, several solutions were presented in Dundalk Institute of Technology which all aim to simplify the changeover.

A prototype of an online portal has been developed. It is designed to help students see at a glance what they can do with their further education qualifica-

tions, and what access routes exist in AIT, DCU, DkIT and MU. Although complicated to design, the online portal provides information accurately and clearly which was highly appreciated by young learners who took part in pilot testing.

The design team are keen to see this project rolled out on a national basis.

A formal Memorandum of Understanding has also been signed to launch a new Network of Further Education and Higher Education Providers within the cluster. The Network is being established with the key aim of enhancing access and transfer and progression opportunities across the region.

The draw for this year’s Gothia Cup took place in Gothenburg Sweden last week and Dundalk Schoolboys League were drawn out in Group 15 along with Torslanda IK (Sweden), Ivybridge College (England) and New York Utd (USA).

A record number of 1750 teams from 77 different countries age 11 to 18 have entered the Gothia Cup this year. Dundalk Schoolboys League under 16 representative team are in group 15 along with 45 other groups bringing together a total of 186 teams from 33 countries. A panel of 20 Dundalk Schoolboys League players and 4 staff are going to Gothenburg from July 12 to 19.

Nickey Murtagh blew the field away on Sunday to capture Mary Lou Grennan’s Lady Captain’s Prize to Men. The 20 handicapper shot a nine-under par round of 63 to win the overall prize by four shots from Sean O’Sullivan, playing off 19.

O’Sullivan edged out Paschal Keenan for second overall on countback but the 17 handicapper took the Category 2 prize with Ciaran Sheridan taking the honours in Cat 1 and Eddie McMullin claiming the Cat 3 prize.

Peter Rogers, off 2, took the

gross prize with an impressive level par total of 72 while 15 handicapper Jordan Mackin was the winner of the juvenile prize with a three under par 69.

The Junior Cup team won their North East qualifying tournament at Balbriggan where they headed the Strokeplay qualifying round with an overall score of 342, to lead home Laytown & Bettystown, Ardee and Headfort.

In the matchplay semi-final Dundalk beat Headfort 4-1 and then, in the afternoon final, saw

off Ardee 3-2 to advance to the Leinster Finals.

To enable as many club members as possible to travel and support the team in the Leinster Finals, which will be held in Portarlington on the weekend of July 25 and 26, the dates for the first qualifying rounds of the Captain’s Prize will now take place on Saturday, July 18 and Sunday, July 19. The final round dates for the Captain’s Prize remain unchanged.

The Jimmy Bruen Shield team were beaten in the semi-

final of their North East qualifier on Sunday by the eventual winners Headfort.

On Saturday the team shot 347 in the qualifying round to make the four team matchplay semi-finals along with Headfort (343), Laytown & Bettystown (346) and hosts Black Bush (347). On Sunday morning, in a match that ebbed and flowed, Dundalk were eventually edged out 3-2 by Headfort who went on to qualify for the Leinster Finals by beating Laytown & Bettystown 3½ to 1½ in the final.

Renault have announced details of their new Clio Renaultsport 220 trophy.

Power comes from a Euro-6 compliant 1.6-litre petrol directinjection turbo engine outputting 220hp @ 6,050 rpm with 260Nm of torque from 2,000 rpm.
