DkIT President, Dr Michael Mulvey’s leadership of the college was put under scrutiny once again when the DkIT branch of the TUI voted overwhelmingly to issue a statement of no confidence against him.

Last Friday week a meeting of the Dundalk IT Branch of the TUI discussed a motion about the future of the Institute. The motion welcomed the recent intervention of the Higher Education Authority to assist the Institute in the goal of entering the TU process and included a statement of No Confidence ‘in the commitment and ability of the President’s office to lead DkIT to Technological University status.

THE owner of the well-known Dundalk pharmacy Leavy’s is appealing for information on the whereabouts of a missing Santa decoration.

Dermot Leavy of Leavy’s pharmacy on Clanbrassil Street is asking for people to contact him with any relevant information relating to Dundalk’s first electrical Santa (pictured).

“He went missing in January 2015. We were getting stuff cleared out to make sure it wasn’t a fire hazard and to get some building work done,” said Dermot.

“We had things wrapped up

in boxes with ‘Do not throw out’ written on them including Santa. Some people said it went to landfill by mistake.

“I find it hard to believe it went to landfill. My grandfather got it. It was the first electrical Santa in Dundalk and people have fond memories of it as children.”

Dermot added: “It had three suits made over the years by my aunt, Bernadette Mullen, and my mother. He was like part of the family.

“A woman used to come home from America in November and she’d ask us to have it

“I just can’t believe it would end up in landfill. All of the staff felt the loss as if part of the family had gone or died but we haven’t given up hope.”

Dermot continued: “He’s not much use to the public if he’s just in someone’s house.

We would be delighted if Dundalk’s second favourite Santa was returned to help keep the magic alive for the children of Dundalk.”

Francis runs 500k for Women’s Aid Dundalk dundalk man Francis Reilly handed over a cheque for €1750 to Women’s Aid after running 500km this year to raise funds for the organisation. According to Francis he initially planned on setting a goal for himself to improve his fitness levels but when Covid-19 hit he decided to use his running to try and raise funds for a local charity.

“At the start of the year I set myself a personal challenge of running 500 km in 2020 basically to try and get myself fit and healthy.

Then when COVID hit I began to think of all the people who may have been stuck at home and isolated or maybe trapped and exposed to an abusive partner/ family member. I said why not try and use my running to try and raise a few euro for the local Women’s Aid. I know they do great work locally and I’m a proud Dundalk man who wants to help make our town better.

“I started putting out a few messages via my social media accounts and set up a gofundme page which was pretty daunting as you don’t know if anybody will get involved. Thankfully I got a great response and I would like to thank everybody who donated over the last few months.

I’m not much of a runner and there were some tough days but I was pretty strict with myself

and the fact that I knew people had donated to my page gave me that bit of extra motivation I may have needed on wet or windy days.

I generally did about 15km a week and I really enjoyed it in general and personally I feel great after getting out so much this year,” stated Francis. “I didn’t really have a figure in mind when I started but I was blown away when

I had reached €1750. I presented the cheque to Women’s Aid on Friday and I got a tour of their premises from Megan who works down there.

They are doing lots of work down there to improve their services and it’s great to see that the money I gave will be of benefit to them.

“I picked Women’s Aid as I wanted to keep the money in the town and I’m aware that there are some charities that maybe don’t get as much spotlight as others. I think nearly all of us have somebody close to us or know somebody who has been a victim of domestic abuse and without Women’s Aid these people would be without support. They helped thousands of women and their children to live safer, happier lives, free from abuse. One in five women in Ireland is affected by domestic violence. I want to help the Women’s Aid help sufferers escape the claws of domestic abuse,” stated Francis.

Local representatives will take Covid vaccine when available LOUTH TDs Fergus O’Dowd, Ruairi O Murchu and Peter Fitzpatrick have all vowed to get the Covid-19 vaccine when it’s made available to them.

“Of course I will when I am offered the vaccine. It will protect vulnerable people and save lives and allow a return to normal life for everybody,” said Louth Fine Gael TD Fergus O’Dowd.

Louth Sinn Fein TD Ruairi O Murchu said: “I’d have no difficulty.

I think it’s going to get through the European Medicines Agency soon.

“If this gives us the ability to get back to a more normal life, it’s the thing to do. We’ve seen the benefits of vaccines for years.”

Louth Independent TD Peter Fitzpatrick said: “I’ll be first in the queue when it’s made available to me.

“It’s badly needed. It’s our only sign of hope.

Over nine out of ten TDs would get a Covid-19 vaccine if it was available to them, according to research

by RTÉ’s Today with Claire Byrne.

Of the 160 TDs in Dáil Éireann including the Ceann Comhairle, 144 said they would get the jab, three said they would not get the vaccine, two are undecided, while 11 TDs did not respond.

Senator John McGahon has also said he will take the vaccine when it’s made available to him.

“I will absolutely be taking the vaccine when I am permitted to avail of it. It’s really important to build vaccine confidence and that means people in public positions should be willing to take it in a bid to tackle the spread of misinformation and inaccurate views about Covid Vaccines,” he said.

“People are entitled

to have concerns about vaccines, but if we use a pro-science approached based on clinical data and evidence I have no doubt that people will be reassured.

“Vaccines have played a tremendous role in practically eradicating smallpox and polio in the 20th century and the Covid Vaccine will do the same in 2021.”

Two different polls have indicated 70 per cent of Irish people intend to get the Covid-19 vaccination shot.

Colaiste Chú Chulainn student raises money for Cappagh Hospital News Kind-hearted Rachael Yore recently presented a cheque for €140 to Cappagh Hospital which she raised having had a bun sale in her school earlier this year.

Rachael who is a sixthyear student in Colaiste Chú Chulainn made all the buns herself having spent a number of weeks doing work experience in the school canteen. Rachael, has a cousin who attends Cappagh Hospital in Dublin so while in the

kitchen she decided to bake some treats with the intention of selling them at the school to try and raise some money for the hospital.

Majella Martin who works in the school kitchen praised Rachael’s baking skills as well as her idea to try and raise money for Cappagh Hospital.

“We loved having Rachael in with us for work experience and she is a fantastic baker and a great girl to

have around the place. She made pastries, buns, chocolate desserts, rice krispie buns and all sorts. She came into the kitchen and worked hard making everything and then every Friday she would sell the buns to teachers and students and all the money she raised she kept for Cappagh. She’s a very popular girl around the school and she will be missed when she leaves us next year,” stated Majella.

O’Murchú welcomes pay review of student nurses Dundalk TD Ruairí Ó Murchú has welcomed the announcement by Taoiseach Micheál Martin that a review of pay by student nurses will be completed by the end of the month and that those who are not able to get part-time work can avail of the Pandemic Unemployment Payment.

The Sinn Féin deputy was one of a number who raised the issue with the government during the Order of Business at Leinster House on Tuesday.

Addressing the Taoiseach, Deputy Ó Murchú said: ‘Student nurses should be paid, particularly when they do es-

sential necessary work and at a point in time when they are unable to work in other health settings.

‘Now that the Government has made its decision, I welcome that some can avail of the pandemic unemployment payment, PUP. I also welcome that there will be a review of allowances.

‘Third year nursing and midwifery students in the Dundalk Institute of Technology, DkIT, brought this to my attention.

Would it be possible for this review as it relates to allowances to be fast-tracked? The payment could be front-loaded and paid upfront to ease some of the

financial hardship that they are dealing with’.

In response, the Taoiseach said: ‘The allowances review will be completed by the end of December. The intention then is to act very quickly on that.

‘The pandemic unemployment payment decision was made between the Minister for Health and the Minister for Social Protection and will be available to student nurses who cannot partake in normal parttime work because of Covid-19.

That is where things are at the moment but we are committed to protect the degree programme itself’.

New Sporting Director Dundalk FC have announced that former Northern Ireland international midfielder Jim Magilton has been appointed as the club’s new sporting director.

The 51-year-old has been the elite performance director at the Irish Football Association (IFA) for the past seven years, developing the federation’s players in preparation for professional contracts in the UK and further afield.

A native of Belfast, Magilton’s playing career spanned two decades. In total, he played over 550 competitive games in England, becoming a household name at clubs like Oxford United, Southampton and Ipswich Town.

He also won 52 caps for Northern Ireland, scoring on his international debut against Poland in 1991.

After retiring as a player in 2006, he spent three years as manager of Ipswich Town and also had a spell at QPR before taking up the number two role at Shamrock Rovers in

2011, helping Michael O’Neill’s side to the SSE Airtricity League title and qualification for the UEFA Europa League group stages.

After a short time in Australia as head coach of Australian A-League side Melbourne Victory, Magilton returned home

to become the IFA’s elite performance director in 2013 where he was responsible for player development and the association’s coach education programme.

He will take up the newly created role at Oriel Park on Monday, December 14th.

Service users at Carroll Village Resource Centre have been working hard over the past weeks to prepare Christmas crafts for sale on our annual Christmas stall. As Christmas approaches, Irish Wheelchair Association is asking Louth local authority and businesses to keep their pathways and disability parking clear for shoppers in wheelchairs and their families, as lockdown ends.

The association has made the call as it launches its Christmas Appeal, which supports youth clubs, bus services and social club activities for people with physical disabilities across Ireland.

Dear Editor, To the management and staff of Dealgan House Nursing Home, I am writing to thank all the great people who work there and acknowledge the wonderful care that was given to my late sister Mrs Ethel McDowell. She was a resident for

a number of years in Dealgan House and the care she received was excellent.

When she was very ill the staff made every effort to ease her journey and mine when she was passing. They showed great professionalism in their duty of care to my sister Ethel

and to myself as close family.

I shall never forget their kindness and I really felt this letter should be written for fear their great work would not be recognised as it should.

Georgina re-elected to the Board of the Olympic Federation of Ireland

Georgina Drumm There was good news for athletics and sport in general in County Louth recently when Dundalk woman Georgina Drumm was re-elected to the Board of the Olympic Federation of Ireland. Drumm was

first elected to this prestigious position in the Olympic body in 2017, the year after she was elected as President of Athletics Ireland, the national governing body for athletics. The following year she was re-elected as

President of Athletics Ireland, a position that she still holds.

Drumm began her involvement in the athletics several years ago with Mountpleasant AC and is now a member of Dromiskinbased St Peter’s AC.

Fairytale of Dundalk’s fundraiser

The annual ‘Fairytale of Dundalk’ fundraiser for North Louth Hospice have had to think outside the box this year due to COVID and as a result they are selling a CD featuring a wealth of local talent as well as a calendar with pictures taking by local photographers which tell a different story each month of artists around Dundalk. Traditionally the ‘Fairytale of Dundalk’ fundraiser involved a Christmas concert which has been held each year since it first began in 2015. To date those involved in the project have raised a total of almost €40000 with every cent going to the North Louth Hospice.

Last year alone the project had its most successful fundraiser to date with a concert headlined by The 4 of Us raising over €10000.

Over the past number of months the ‘Fairytale of Dundalk’ team have been working hard to put together a CD featuring 24 tracks from a number of talented local artists including Cuchulainn Celtic Strings, Oriel Youth Ensemble, The Long Rid-

ers, The Decades and Scale Force as well as contributions from Zoe and John McIntyre, opera singer Tara Erraught, Nathan Carter, Jim Corr, The Fureys, Bagatelle and The 4 of Us. There are also contributions from several prolific artists including The 4 of Us, Zoe and John McIntyre, opera star Tara Erraught, Nathan Carter, Jim Corr, The Fureys and Bagatelle.

Meanwhile the calendar features images which features the local arts scene by some of our best local photographers including Olof Berg, Fra Luchessi, Ryan Duffy, Jeanette Morgan, Orlaith Cullinane, David Berry, Mark Duffy, Andrew Brown, Darren Raffety, Paula Kavanagh, Rashida Keenan Aidan Stewart and Brian Donnelly.

Both the CD and the calendar can be purchased online at www. fairytaleofdundalk.com with the CD costing €15 and the calendar €10. If you buy the CD and calendar together it will cost €20.

Tie wrap gang raise money for three local charities

A group of Dundalk FC supporters who call themselves the ‘Tie Wrap Gang’ presented three local charities with cheques for €500 this week in Dundalk. The group of eighteen supporters volunteer their services and tidy Oriel Park ahead of each game which is where they got their name from.

The group were formed in September 2017 when a group of likeminded passion-

ate Dundalk FC supporters decided to go down to an away game in Cork on the train.

Unfortunately, there was a train strike that weekend so they instead organised a bus and from that moment ‘The Tie Wrap Gang’ were born.

Pre-Covid the group travelled to every away league and cup game as well as attending all home games in Oriel Park. On the bus journey’s they started to do a goal time competition

and any profits made were kept until the end of the year before giving some money to local charities.

Gerry Curtis, one of the members of the group thanked everybody who helped raise money for the various fundraising events they held throughout the year.

“On behalf of the Tie-Wrap Gang we would like to thank you all who donated to our fundraising events throughout

the year. Our charities who benefitted today were Cara Care, SoSad and Meals On Wheels.

“Unfortunately, we only ran our match day bus to a few games due to Covid-19.

Our fundraising this year consisted of walks and our main fundraiser was Goal Times for matches. Without your support and generosity we couldn’t help these charities. Cmon the Town,” laughed Gerry.

St Gerard’s A.C. sign up to 20x20 charter Dundalk St Gerard’s A.C. chair Sean Moran has said that the club is “delighted and proud” to sign up to the 20x20 charter and become a 20x20 Member Club, as the club continues to develop and nurture their young female athletes.

The 20x20 initiative has made great strides in helping to encourage women to play sport while also tasking clubs, organisations and the media with promoting women’s games as much as possible. Sean says that St Gerard’s A.C. is keen to continue promoting this particular side of the club, and that signing up to 20x20 was a logical and natural next step.

“The number of female club members in St Gerard’s has always been strong and steady, typically outnumbering the boys. We currently have 130 registered members, of which 57% are girls from U7 up to U15” says Sean.

The club has had some great successes on the national and international stage in recent years with female club stalwarts Kate O’Connor and Patience Jumbo-Gula going on to represent their country in European Championships events.

Sean says that the

club will do everything it can to encourage and promote the girls in the club, and to keep them involved in athletics for as long as possible. “All club members, male and female, regularly feature on the club’s Facebook page, and the club is committed to championing the girls in local media as much as possible. Our hope is that we can encourage as many girls as possible in the area to take up athletics, and to provide opportunities for them to de-

velop their skills, train with others and indeed compete, if that’s what they want to do”.

“The strength of the club and the success over the years would not be possible without the coaches, who give up their time to pass on their knowledge and provide encouragement to the young athletes.”

New St Gerard’s A.C. coach Jean McArdle, on board since the club resumed training in the autumn, says that showing the girls that the

club has committed to promote and look after them is hugely significant. “The girls see that they are valued and that they are very welcome.

The younger girls watch and learn from the older athletes as well as their coaches, and there is a great team spirit. That is what the 20x20 initiative is all about – it’s about keeping women and girls sport visible.

The initiative has been running for a number of years and it was fantastic to see one of the male coaches realise the benefits of the club and the girls being more visible, for his daughter and all her club mates”.

Sean Moran says “Clubs like ours provide a platform to train and compete both individually and as part of a team, allowing for a steady stream of young female talent to come through, and indeed a platform that enables young girls to stay fit and have fun while doing it. We look forward to supporting this initiative.”

‘Bye Bye Now’ — The Tommy Leddy autobiography Louth man Tommy Leddy’s legendary radio catchphrase, ‘Bye, Bye Now’ is the title of his newly published autobiography.

Tommy (81) who founded Drogheda’s iconic Sound Shop in Drogheda, gave his name to the Tommy Leddy Theatre, (TLT) and had a career in showbands, tells the story of his life, going back to his grandparents, O’Neill’s and Leddy’s and his arrival in Drogheda.

Packed with family history

and local history, Tommy’s book is full of stories and photographs featuring staff and customers alike from the Sound Shop both in its Mayoralty House premises on Drogheda’s Quays and also when it moved to East Coast Park in 2008 when the TLT was also completed.

Among the staff photographs are a number of well-known names and faces such as Charlie Pride, Brendan Grace, Phil Coulter and even Acker Bilt.

As for his famous catch

phrase ‘Bye Bye Now’, Tommy explains, “When local Drogheda radio started in 1978, I started to advertise The Sound Shop with them. I remember one day I had no ending for my ad, so I said, “Bye bye now”. The next ad, I didn’t put in ‘bye bye now’ and the listeners rang in asking where was Tommy Leddy’s ‘bye bye now’? I had to go up and re-record my ad and after that I never left it out again.”

“I remember years ago when on a business trip with one of the

staff to London we were getting off a train and we heard someone shouting from the other platform “Bye bye now, Tommy Leddy.” When we looked over, there were three lads who used to be customers of The Sound Shop.”

An Táin Arts Centre’s doors are back open with storytelling, films, visual arts and family events all coming up at the local arts centre hub.

Ghost Light: Scéalta ón Lú Trí Sholas - Storytelling with Paudie Breen 13th - 19th December at 7pm on Facebook Join us on An Táin Arts Centre’s Facebook page at 7pm every evening from Sunday 13th of December until Saturday 19th of December, where renowned Dundalk actor Paudie Breen will perform a story from the collection, which inspired the project, Ghost Light: Scéalta ón Lú Trí Sholas (Stories of Louth through light). Ghost Light: Scéalta ón Lú Trí Sholas, is an exhibition using cut paper, card and light displayed in the windows of An Táin Arts Centre, depicting scenes from stories taken from the collection of the National Folklore Archive. The work will be lit up at dusk for all to see and read from the street outside the building. The exhibition will run from the 20th of December until 10th of January 2021.

Rotary Club to continue Christmas dinner tradition The Rotary Club of Dundalk has decided to continue delivering Christmas Day Dinners again this year. A total of over thirty meals will be delivered.

This year the catering company D’lish has kindly volunteered to cook the dinners as part of their Christmas contribution to society.

Christmas Day to the homes of Recipients most of whom are living on their own but would not be able to cook a Christmas Dinner. The President of the Rotary Club of Dundalk Stephen Gunne and the Members wish to thank D’lish for their generous offer.

It is interesting to note that the Rotary Club delivered the

first Christmas day dinners in 1972 and have been doing so every year since a total of forty eight years in all. The number of meals varied from as low as fifteen to a high of sixty-five. The dinners were cooked in the homes of Rotarians and friends of Rotarians and delivered direct to Recipients.

local Dentist the late Paddy Roche he continued the good work for years and was replaced by local Funeral Director the Late Patsy Rogers who also continued the good work for years.
