By Paul Byrne ACROSS villages in Ghana, countless families drink clean water thanks to the hard work of Omeath man Ciaran Phillips who has travelled to the West African country on numerous occasions over the last few years to drill wells and build schools in the Volta region of the country. Up to a dozen wells have now been drilled by Ciarán since 2019 when he first went over to drill a well in memory of his dear cousin Melissa O’Reilly who sadly passed away from cancer in 2018.

Ciaran is planning another trip to Ghana later this year and this time he will have company in the form of Vincent Mulligan, Cillian Mulligan and Paul Kelly aka the three owners of popular Dundalk pub Mo Chara. The four will fly out to Accra in Ghana on the 23rd of November and will spend a week drilling wells to give local communities access to clean water, a luxury which unfortunately is not widely available in many parts of Africa.

According to Ciarán his link up with the Mo Chara boys came after a chance meeting on the streets of Dundalk with Paul Kelly last year.

Ciaran and the Mo Chara Boys heading to Ghana to drill wells From Page 1 “I was over in Ghana last year,” recalls Ciaran, “and I was only back in Dundalk when I met Paul from Mo Chara on the street. I’d know the three boys well and I was chatting away to Paul telling him what I was up to in Ghana and how I’d been drilling wells over there since 2019.

I said to him that himself and the two other boys should come over with me the next time I was going over and they all agreed to do it straight away.

“I first came up with the idea to drill wells about 7 or 8 years ago. I was driving through Ghana delivering aid when I noticed that the villagers had to walk miles to get water. I decided that I would try and drill a well to make life easier for them so when I got back to Ireland I began fundraising and thanks to the amazing generosity of the people of Omeath and further afield we were able to buy all the equipment necessary to build the well.

100 metres into the ground and ran it off a generator. I go back every year and we have now probably drilled a dozen wells in total.

“It is just amazing to see the positive effects in the villages after a well has been drilled. In one of the villages myself and Ciaran Lavery were in last year we were told that 70% of the women were having miscarriages because of a grub in the water they were drinking. Since

the well has gone in those figures have decreased dramatically and there are less children getting sick and even for the farmers their land is flourishing and they are getting ten times more produce because of access to clean water.

“So myself and the Mo Chara boys will fly over in November (again self-funded) and in the meantime we are fundraising to hopefully get enough money to drill a total of five wells. Each well

costs in the region of €6.5k to build so we’re going hard at the fundraising at the minute.

“We had a fantastic day in Lily Finnegans pub last week in memory of Bernard Quinn who sadly passed away in June. He was a musician and a great Cooley man and everybody loved him. We had probably a dozen bands in Lily’s playing music throughout the day and hundreds of people turned up.

Bernard’s son Rowan even got up and sang one of his Dad’s songs and we managed to raise an amazing €30,000 for the wells in Ghana and for the Maria Goretti Foundation. When we get to Ghana we will be drilling one of the wells in his memory.

“As I say we are hoping to build 5 or 6 wells but that depends on how much money we can raise.

Hopefully people can get behind us ahead of our trip in November. The joy and happiness you see from the villagers when they see eh clean water from the well is fantastic. They are great people and they always put on music and dancing for

us. I am looking forward to seeing young Vino Mulligan in the middle of all that,” laughed Ciaran.

THE family of the late David Sally are holding a fundraiser in loving memory of their son who bravely battled leukaemia for ten and a half months.

Throughout that journey, David was cared for on St. Teresa’s Haematology Ward at Beaumont Hospital, where he received the most exceptional care, compassion and dignity. Every doctor, nurse, healthcare assistant and member of staff treated David with kindness, respect and genuine warmth, while also supporting the Sally family through the most difficult time of their lives.

“No words could ever fully express our gratitude for everything they did. Their compassion

brought comfort during our darkest days, and their dedication will stay with us forever.

“In David’s memory, we wanted to do something that would honour his life while giving something back to the ward that gave so much to him, and to us. €12.65 million for town and city regeneration projects in Louth

€5m has been earmarked for the regeneration of St Nicholas Quarter in Dundalk.

FUNDING of €12.65m has been issued for a number of projects across Louth including Drogheda (Westgate €7.5 million), Dundalk (Park Street/Francis Street €150,000), Dundalk (St Nicholas Quarter €5 million) in Louth.

120 projects across every local authority in the State is set to benefit from a landmark Government investment fund of €409 million. The fund will support policies such as ‘Town Centre First’ and seek to focus funding in the most disadvantaged areas of towns and cities around the country.

Deputy Paula Butterly said this funding for 3 projects in

Louth will also help redevelop vacant or underused sites.

“This funding is a huge boost to Dundalk and Drogheda, which are places we all want to be able to congregate in, whether it’s to go shopping, meet friends or family or just visit to absorb the daily activity.

“Today’s announcement highlights Fine Gael’s strong commitment to supporting our communities both economically and socially.

We all want to see regeneration in our own communities and to provide spaces that are safe and attractive for people from all generations to gather and enjoy.

St Patrick’s Parish welcome Fr Paul Byrne to Dundalk

FATHER Paul Byrne was appointed as the new parish priest for St Patrick’s in Dundalk last week as Archbishop Eamon Martin

officially installed him into his new position.

Fr Paul will begin his new chapter as Parish Priest for St Patrick’s which includes taking

up the role as Administrator for the Holy Family, Dundalk and Holy Redeemer, Dundalk.

Previously Fr Paul

had been Parish Priest in Termonfeckin and speaking to the Dundalk Leader this week the Newry man says he is very happy to now be serving the people of Dundalk in his new role.

“I was installed into my new role at a mass last week where Archbishop Eamon Martin introduced me to the people of Dundalk in St Patrick’s Church.

It is an honour and a privilege to be here in Dundalk and it’s been a very busy opening week for me here in my new role. I first became a deacon back in 1990 just before I was ordained a priest and I was in Ardee for a couple of months before moving to the Redeemer Parish and then on to Armagh. I’m from Newry so I know Dundalk well and I know the town is a very vibrant town and that is fantastic to see.

“One thing I have noticed is how busy Dundalk is in the evenings.

“Having previously been in Termonfeckin, it was noticeable how quiet the main streets in Drogheda are in the evening and that is not the case here in Dundalk.

“Effectively there are two aspects to my new role here as Parish Priest for St Patricks.

There are pastoral and administrative obligations to be met. I am here to administer essential sacraments and teach the churches teachings as well as empower priests in the parish and guide them.

From an admin point of view I will basically manage the upkeep of all the parish buildings. As I said, I’ve only just started but it’s been a busy week and I’ve hit the ground running and received a lovely welcome so I am looking forward to meeting more people in the parish over the next few weeks and introducing myself,” stated Fr Paul.

Fr Paul Byrne is the new parish priest in Dundalk.

Together for Hope event marks World Suicide Prevention Day in Louth

TO mark World Suicide Prevention Day, Healthy Louth held its first CommUnity Connect: Together for Hope event at the Monasterboice Inn on Thursday, 10 September.

Developed jointly by Healthy Louth and Healthy Meath, CommUnity Connect is a positive mental health initiative that connects communities with local support services and promotes help-seeking and wellbeing.

Delivered in partnership with Rosaleen Dolan, HSE Resource Officer for Suicide Prevention in Louth and Meath, and SAFE Castlebellingham, a volunteer-led community organisation dedicated to promoting positive mental health, wellbeing and suicide awareness, the event brought together more than 40 service providers from across County Louth.

Noise complaints: When can the Council or Gardaí take action?

By Darren Crawley WHETHER it’s loud music late at night, barking dogs, DIY work early on a Sunday morning or persistent disturbances from neighbouring properties, noise is one of the most common issues raised by residents across Dundalk. As the town continues to grow, with new housing developments, busy hospitality venues and increased outdoor activity during the summer months, disagreements over excessive noise have become increasingly common.

While most noise problems can be resolved through a friendly conversation, there are occasions when disturbances become so persistent that legal intervention may be necessary. Many people are unsure who to contact, what the law actually says or whether a particular type of noise is even illegal. Understanding how Ireland’s noise laws operate can help residents know their rights while encouraging respectful relationships between neighbours.

Contrary to popular belief, Ireland does not have a nationwide law stating that noise must stop after a particular hour, such as 11pm. Instead, the law focuses on whether noise is so loud, continuous or unreasonable that it interferes with another person’s

comfort or quality of life.

In many cases, the first step is simply speaking to the person responsible. A neighbour may be unaware that music, power tools or other activities are disturbing those living nearby. Resolving matters informally is often the quickest and most effective solution.

However, where noise becomes persistent or excessive, several different authorities may become involved depending on the circumstances.

Environmental Health Officers within Louth County Council deal with certain complaints involving ongoing environmental noise, particularly where the disturbance is continuous or recurring. This may include commercial premises, industrial activity or other environmental issues affecting nearby residents. In some situations, investigations may be carried out to assess whether the level of noise amounts to a statutory nuisance.

For more immediate incidents, particularly those involving antisocial behaviour, loud parties, disorderly conduct or disturbances occurring late at night, An Garda Síochána may be the more appropriate authority to contact. Gardaí have powers under various pieces of legislation to deal with breaches of the peace,

public order offences and situations where behaviour is causing significant disruption within the community.

Construction work is another area that often generates complaints, particularly in growing towns such as Dundalk where housing developments and commercial projects continue to expand. While building work is an important part of local development, contractors are generally expected to carry out noisy activities during reasonable daytime hours and to minimise unnecessary disruption to nearby residents wherever possible.

From a local perspective, noise complaints in Dundalk can arise in many different settings. Residents living close to Park Street,

Clanbrassil Street, Earl Street or the town centre may experience increased noise associated with pubs, restaurants and latenight activity, particularly during weekends and major sporting events. Those living in newer housing estates may instead encounter issues relating to domestic renovations, garden equipment or neighbourhood disputes.

The summer months often bring a noticeable increase in complaints. Good weather encourages people to spend more time outdoors, with barbecues, family gatherings and social events becoming more frequent.

While these occasions are an important part of community life, problems can arise when celebrations continue into the early

hours or music is played at excessive volumes.

Pets can also become the source of ongoing disputes. A dog that barks occasionally is unlikely to give rise to legal action, but persistent barking over long periods can significantly affect neighbours’ enjoyment of their homes. Responsible pet ownership includes taking reasonable steps to minimise repeated disturbances where possible.

Businesses also have responsibilities. Restaurants, pubs, gyms and entertainment venues are expected to operate in a manner that balances commercial activity with the rights of nearby residents. Most local businesses work closely with the relevant authorities to minimise disruption, recognising that maintaining good relationships with the surrounding community benefits everyone.

Where informal discussions fail, residents may also have legal options through the District Court. Under environmental legislation, individuals can make an application where excessive noise is seriously interfering with their comfort or enjoyment of their property. Before taking this step, however, it is often advisable to keep records of when the disturbances occur, including dates, times and the nature of the noise.

Fortunately, the vast majority of neighbourhood noise issues never reach that stage. Most people simply want to enjoy their homes while respecting the needs of those living around them. A little consideration, particularly during late evenings and early mornings, can prevent minor disagreements from developing into long-running disputes.

As Dundalk continues to grow and attract new residents, maintaining positive relationships between neighbours is more important than ever. The town’s vibrant hospitality sector, expanding residential developments and active community life are all strengths, but they work best when everyone recognises that their enjoyment should not come at the expense of someone else’s peace and quiet.

Ultimately, noise laws are not about preventing people from enjoying themselves. They exist to strike a fair balance between everyday life and the right of others to enjoy their homes without unreasonable disturbance. By showing consideration, communicating openly and understanding when legal intervention may be appropriate, residents can help ensure that Dundalk remains a welcoming and enjoyable place to live for everyone.

Relay for Life Dundalk raises €26,000 for Irish Cancer Society

AFTER months of preparation, Relay for Life Dundalk took place last weekend as Dundalk Stadium hosted the 24 hour event which acts as a fundraiser for the Irish Cancer Society as well as remembering those who have been lost to cancer while celebrating those who have survived it.

The event sees teams take turns walking or moving around a designated track through the day and night because “cancer never sleeps”. It began on Saturday at 2pm with a special Survivors Lap to honour those who have beaten or are currently facing cancer. On Saturday evening the always poignant Candle of Hope ceremony took place in a moving tribute filled with music and remembrance for loved ones lost to cancer. There was loads of entertainment as well over the weekend including music from Mickey Joe Harte and Dundalk Ukulele Group, Grow Music, Irish Dancing, Paddy Mac and the Dance Kids to name a few.

Jane McDermott from the Relay for Life Dundalk Organising Committee thanked everybody who took part in the event while revealing that a massive €26,000 had been raised for the Irish Cancer Society. She also thanked all the sponsors as well as JJ Travel, DJ Goosey, Dundalk Stadium, Dundalk Order of Malta and Dan

Larry O’Hagan, Robbie Rafferty Jr and Robbie Rafferty Sr. and Sarah from the Irish Cancer Society who were there over the weekend to help with the event.

Graham Purcell, Managing Director of National Tile said he was delighted to sponsor the main raffle which saw a first prize of €1000 being won by a lucky competition winner. According to Graham the raffle managed to raise a massive €7,300 and he thanked everybody who bought a ticket. Speaking to the Dundalk Leader Teresa Foley, who is a survivor of cancer said that she was delighted to see he Relay for Life in Dundalk and that it was a very emotional experience for her given the fact that she had been diagnosed with cancer twenty years earlier and man-

aged to survive. An exhausted Teresa said she had managed to last the full 24 hours at the Relay and that she was looking forward to getting into her bed.

Speaking to the assembled crowd, Dan from the Irish Cancer Society thanked all the volunteers who helped make the event such a big success and he stated that it felt like the Relay for Life was coming back to its Irish home given the fact that the very first Relay for Life in Ireland took place in Dundalk way back in 2009. The organising committee will take a well-earned break now before gathering together early next year to discuss a potential return in 2027.

Man caught driving dangerously while under influence of drugs told to take a driver awareness course

A MAN who made an application at Dundalk District Court to have a charge of dangerous driving reduced to careless driving was told that he would have to complete a driver awareness course before it would be considered.

James O’Driscoll (20) of 11 Carnagat Lane, Newry, Co Down, appeared before Judge Nicola Andrews arising out of an incident on January 4th this year when he was observed travelling at 149 kph on the M1 motorway at Littlemills, Dundalk.

A breath specimen revealed that was under the influence of drugs and over the limit for driving. The investigating Garda stated that the speed limit was 12o kph and icy weather conditions contributed to the dangerous driving charge. He added that the defendant did stop and was co-operative with Gardai.

Court Presenter Richie Browne stated that Gardai had no objection to the charge being reduced.

The defence solicitor pointed out that her client had never been to Garda at-

tention before or since, and that he was only slightly over the limit in relation to the drug charge.

Judge Andrews referred the defendant to the Probation Service and directed that he undertake a driver awareness course but warned that she would take a dim view if he did not co-operate fully.

Once the course was completed, the Judge stated that she would allow the defendant to renew his application and adjourned the matter to January 26th next.

Nicholas Charles Balmes (47) of 15 Ardshee, Blackrock, Co Louth, pleaded guilty to a charge

of driving without insurance arising out of an incident on February 17th this year at Dublin Road, Dundalk.

The defendant told Judge Nicola Andrews that he had insurance in the USA and thought it was transferrable. Once he realised his mistake, he corrected it.

North Dundalk bus plans 30% on Louth housing list advance but no start date are non-Irish, meeting hears A PROPOSED seven-day bus service linking Ath Lethan with Dundalk and DkIT has moved closer to being delivered, but residents still have no start date, with funding yet to be confirmed.

The National Transport Authority (NTA) told the Dundalk Leader that DN1 is “now at an advanced stage of procurement”.

Local Link Louth Meath Fingal would operate the proposed service between Ath Lethan, Dundalk, DkIT and Haynestown/ Marlmount, providing “up to 27 return journeys, seven days a week”.

The update comes following concerns raised by Independent Cllr Ciarán Fisher who has been pressing for better connections north of the Castletown River, arguing that a new service would help reduce traffic. “Ath Lethan and the Lisdoo Road feel forgotten about when it comes to town bus services,” he said.

Cllr Fisher said he believed central government funding was holding up progress and now the latest NTA response confirms “the implementation date is subject to confirmation of funding, so a firm date cannot be confirmed.”

Louth County Council has already worked with the NTA and Bus Éireann on where buses could stop along the two routes originally proposed in the Dundalk Local Transport Plan. The council says it continues to support both DN1 Blackrock–Racecourse Road and DN2 Haynestown–Fatima, but adds responsibility for planning and delivering routes and stops rests

Getting DN1 running would deliver part of the expansion envisaged in the town’s transport plan. The NTA says the service combines the northern section of the original DN1 with the southern section of DN2, while further expansion would need to take account of existing commercial services and the potential for unfair competition if publicly subsidised services were introduced.

Funding for new town services is being discussed as part of a much broader programme with the Department of Transport saying the NTA’s priority for 2026 was to maintain existing services and make the network more resilient, taking account of available funding and resources.

Both bodies referred to discussions on the 2027 public service obligation programme, in which new and improved town services

feature alongside BusConnects, Connecting Ireland and rail.

Neither gave a commitment that DN1 would start that year.

The Department also pointed to a 55% increase in rural transport investment across Louth, Meath and the area of Fingal between 2024 and 2025, to over €6.4m, and a 72% rise in passenger numbers on Regular Rural Services routes in Louth over the same period. Those figures concern wider services and in its response it did not identify a funding allocation specifically for DN1.

Cllr Fisher says the benefits wouldn’t stop at getting people onto buses, he believes it could help open up land for development too. “A better bus route north of the river would also assist with making more tranches of land more appealing to develop and allow those living there to leave the car at home,” he said.

COUNTY COUNCIL SAYS NO PROBLEM WITH SQUATTERS LOUTH County Council says it has no problem with squatters, after Cllr Marianne Butler (GP) sought clarity on figures for people occupying council homes without a lawful tenancy.

At Dundalk Municipal District’s this month, Cllr Butler questioned the numbers listed under abandonment notifications and illegal occupiers, saying they seemed much

higher than in previous reports, when there had been none or only one or two.

She wanted to know whether the illegal-occupancy cases involved people seeking to take over an existing tenancy or squatters.

“We haven’t got a problem with squatters,” a council official replied, explaining that difficulties arose where somebody was trying to

Cllr McGuinness congratulated the council on the number of housing allocations and thanked officials for supplying waiting-list figures for housing but said he would now like to get a figure on the percentage of non-Irish allocations of housing.

“We’re out there in the public dealing with people and sometimes we get it tough at times to come up with data but I think as much as we have great numbers on producing houses, I think it’s important we get some data on the percentages.”

Earlier in the meeting, Cllr Marianne Butler (GP) raised concerns about rumours of unfair allocations, explaining that disability, mental health needs and other circumstances could mean some applicants received homes outside the council’s Choice Based Letting system.

She referred to an email sent by the Director of Service for Housing earlier in the year detailing “very clearly” housing delivery and where those houses were. She said it also “gave a split about how houses were going to be allocated

Cllr Shane McGuinness. because not every single house that becomes available is allocated through Choice Based Lettings (CBL).” She has had to refer back to that same email “so many times” because of rumours going around that houses were being allocated in “an unfair way”.

She then told the meeting that she had been asked why there were only a certain number of houses on Choice Based Lettings being allocated.

“Every single person who has been allocated a house waited a considerable amount of time for that house,” she said, dismissing the idea of “a mini-bus going around giving out houses” and referencing what she described as “misinformation and disinformation going around”.

On that basis, she asked the

council to update members with a similar email every six months or every quarter, adding that information also needs to get out to the public about housing timelines, and what houses were going to be available and how they are allocated.

A council official said the authority aimed to allocate 60% of homes through CBL, which it tries to “adhere as closely with that as possible.” Some developments were handled separately to CBL, including Greenhills Grange, which caters for people over 55. The official added that the council advertises through the council’s media team on any developments coming up, mentioning the large development of 58 units An Mullach in Louth Village.

Regarding non-Irish on the housing list the council official said, “We allocate houses to the longest person on the list who is eligible.”

Cllr Shane Mc Guinness said he didn’t understand why he can’t get a clear breakdown on the Irish and non-Irish on the housing allocation. “I don’t see why I can’t get it,” he said.

The council official reiterated the point that “anyone who receives social housing support has qualified for social housing support.”

Medieval finds will not be visible at Ardee Castle ty Council, Dolores Minogue (FG) asked the local authority to examine whether a glass section could be incorporated into the new floor to allow some of the archaeology discovered during excavations to be seen by visitors, adding that other Irish castles had done similar and it could enhance the appeal as a visitor destination.

However, a council official said though it would be technically possible, it would “be difficult” to do and could not be achieved without redesigning part of the project, since the finds are in the area of the proposed lift shaft needed to provide access for visitors.

Ardee MD Cathaoirleach Jim Tenanty (Ind) also asked if there was a way that the discoveries could be viewed but the official told him that because the lift was

to be put in that location so “you wouldn’t be able to see anything.”

Instead, the archaeological finds would be recorded and preserved in situ and covered and for visitors, photographs and floor markings could be displayed to show where the items are located.

Cllr Minogue said, “It’s a pity we can’t have that glass floor but I do understand the logistics around it.”

Louth County Council signed a contract with Francis Haughey Construction in January 2026 to deliver the regeneration project.

The scheme includes structural conservation and refurbishment of the castle, bridewell and courtyard, improved public access to all four floors and the site’s integration into the wider Ardee 2040 regeneration vision.

It will include a mix of two, three and four-bedroom homes, as well as a five-bedroom supported living house that will be managed by St John of God. The completed development is expected to be handed over to Louth County Council in October and the first properties are due to appear on the council’s Choice Based Lettings (CBL) system from mid-September, with allocations and move-ins expected before the end of the year.

LOUTH Contemporary Music Society has been awarded €98,400 under the Arts Council’s Arts Grant Funding scheme, part of a wider €17.2 million investment in 220 arts organisations and individuals nationwide.

The Dundalk-based music organisation was one of four recipients across Louth, which together received a combined €382,475 in this year’s round.

Arts Grant Funding supports individuals and organisations to deliver activities over a set period and reinforces the national network of support for artists and audiences, complementing the Art’s Council’s other funding programmes. This year’s awards will fund both public-facing arts activities and direct artist supports, as part of the Council’s ongoing work to build a sustainable and thriving arts sector across Ireland.

Arts Grant Funding will support the delivery of artistic activity across various artforms throughout 2027.

Congratulating the 220 recipients of this year’s funding, Minister for Culture, Communications and Sport, Patrick O’Donovan, said, “This significant investment in artists and arts audiences demonstrates the State’s continuing commitment to supporting and uplifting Ireland’s robust creative culture, and it ensures the ongoing development of the arts in communities and localities across the country.”

October ruling expected on long-awaited Ardee bypass

Council backs 22 student bedrooms in Dundalk LOUTH County Council has backed plans to turn a derelict warehouse off Clanbrassil Street into accommodation with 22 student bedrooms. The council decided on 4th September 2026 to grant permission, subject to 14 conditions.

Jordan Homes IRL Limited’s plans for the Wrightson’s Lane building include shared living areas alongside the bedrooms.

The warehouse is a protected

structure, and the work must retain the “maximum amount of surviving historic fabric”, including plasterwork and joinery.

The conditions also require the operator to take steps to “prevent noise nuisance, antisocial behaviour and disturbance to adjoining properties”.

The building manager’s contact details must be available to residents and adjoining property

owners.

Before students can move in, a marked pedestrian safe zone must also be provided on the building side of Wrightson’s Lane.

Appeals must reach An Coimisiún Pleanála by 5.30pm on Thursday, 1st October, with the council saying it will issue the final grant of permission after the appeal period ends if no appeal is taken.

A Supreme Court ruling on appeal for Ardee Bypass is expected next month.

THE 27th of October could bring a decision on the appeal over Ardee’s long-awaited N52 bypass, with councillors told a Supreme Court ruling is expected that day.

A council official told Ardee Municipal District’s September meeting that Friends of Ardee Bog had until 5th October to submit outstanding documents ahead of the

one-day hearing. The environmental group is appealing the High Court’s dismissal of its judicial review challenge back in May 2024.

Councillors heard that the parties involved had received a “rap on the knuckles” over paperwork delays and that the court wanted the case expedited.

The prospect of a decision

Funded by the Local Democracy Reporting Scheme

prompted Cathaoirleach of Louth County Council Dolores Minogue to ask whether the hearing would deliver a “clear-cut yes or no”, as she spoke about the difficulties facing businesses in the congested town.

“I won’t even ask what happens if it is a no,” she said. “I’m going to be positive that we are getting this bypass, because we need it.”

Local actor looking forward to film release Windows

LOCAL actor Martin Gogarty can be seen in ‘A Sunken Place’ which is being released into the Arc cinema in Drogheda this Friday (18th September).

Martin, originally from the Carrick Road plays a corrupt brain surgeon who performs an illegal clandestine operation in the well-received film.

The medical thriller premiered at the recent Indie Cork Film Festival and won the ‘Spirit of the Festival’ Award. The film follows a young researcher who faces intense opposition from a massive pharmaceutical company trying to suppress her cure for depression. The story also intercuts with dramatic accounts of individuals affected by mental illness.

The film was directed by Ronan O’Leary and written

by Gerard Daly, and as well as Martin Gogarty, Emma Dargan-Reid, Liam Murphy, and Barry McGovern also star in the film.

According to Martin it is an achievement in itself for a small independent Irish movie to secure a cinema release.

“We were thrilled when we heard the news that the movie was going to get an official cinema release. It is so hard for independent film makers in Ireland to get films into cinema and I am thrilled that ‘A Sunken Place’ will be officially released in the Arc Cinema in Drogheda this Friday.

“My part in the film is quite small but it was a fantastic experience and one that I enjoyed immensely being part of. We shot it probably a couple of years ago and it has been well received so far.

I started meeting people like Ronan O’Leary who directed this film and I was delighted to play a part in it.

“I love acting and I’m still passionate about it. I am not a major success story at all and this industry can be hard. You are dealing with rejection on a regular basis and opportunities are hard to come by but I’ve managed to maintain my love for acting and I try and not to take it personally when I don’t get picked for roles.

Since returning to Dundalk I’ve been helping out aspiring actors locally and have taught drama in Blackrock when filling in for a teacher on Maternity leave which I really enjoyed. I have access to casting sites and have put some very talented local kids forward who have got their first taste into the world of acting. I joined the Redemptorist Choir and have met loads of wonderful people through that and I have worked with the very talented people in the Dundalk Musical Society and I have to say I have loved coming back to Dundalk. It’s a truly great community and location wise it’s idea for me whenever I need to get to Dublin for any

“I’m originally from the Carrick Road in Dundalk and studied in the Marist but I moved to Dublin when I was younger doing kind of modelling work and extras work as I wanted to dip my toes into the acting world to see if I’d like it.

I studied acting at the Dublin Central School of Acting and did theatre work in Dublin before moving to London when I was in my early 30s. I spent seven years in London but found it too big and too busy so I moved to Brighton where I really enjoyed living and went back and forth on the train for jobs in London.

“About ten years ago I moved back to Dundalk. My father became ill so I came home to help with that and became his carer. It was hard trying to reestablish myself as an actor over here having been away so long but I got in touch with Louise Kiely who is based in Drogheda and one of the country’s leading casting directors and from there

“We have so much acting talent here in Dundalk and I would love to see something like the Maytime Festival return. I think there is an appetite locally for great theatre and I know the Táin put on some fantastic productions but I think we should have more regular stuff going on.

This is a very tough industry as I said before and unless you have a passion for it I wouldn’t advise any young actors/actresses to get into it. You have to love it and you have to be able to hand rejection. For me it’s a fantastic artform and as we seen through Covid it is so important. Many forms of art including film, music etc kept a lot of people sane during that period,” stated Martin. ”I’m in my 50s now but the passion burns as strong as ever and I will keep on doing this as well as trying to help the next generation with any advice or knowledge I can pass on,” he added.
