IT'S a long way from Bay Estate to Oberhausen but on Sunday night for 120 minutes Heinz Kampes’ house in Cherryvale was transformed into a German fanzone as he and his family celebrated his home nation’s fourth World Cup victory.

Heinz was sent to Ireland in 1946 to escape war torn Germany as part of Operation Shamrock.

Between 1945 and 1946, the Irish Red Cross Operation Shamrock resettled over a thousand children from war-torn Germany, Austria, France, and England. Most of these children were later repatriated to their homelands, but some like Heinz were adopted by their Irish host

Louth represented in new cabinet

Louth will be represented at the cabinet after Gen Nash was promoted during the recent reshuffle as the 38 year old Labour TD, who was first elected to the Dail just three years ago will have responsibility for business and employment.

Ged is the second youngest member of Cabinet after the new Minister for Health, Leo Varadkar, and he stated that he is looking forward to the challenge of such a key position.

“I am very proud to be given this responsibility by the Taoiseach and Tanaiste and I will work day and night to

ensure that the Louth & East Meath area feels the full impact of our economic recovery”, said Deputy Nash.

“Job creation, fair wages and support for indigenous local business will be central to my agenda in government.

The Taoiseach and Tanaiste have given me specific responsibility for the areas of employment rights, working conditions, the Low Pay Commission and supporting small and medium enterprises.

This is a crucial role in our economic and social recovery”, he stated.

Over 11,000 species of insects occur in Ireland but most are very small and escape notice. Identifying them accurately can be difficult or impossible. However, help is at hand thanks to Dundalk man Stephen McCormack who, along with his wife Eugenie, has just published the very first illustrated guide to the insects of Ireland.

‘Insects of Ireland’ is a comprehensive compact guide to over 120 of Ireland’s most popular insects includes all Irish species of butterflies, bumblebees, dragonflies, ladybirds, grasshoppers and shield bugs. All are illustrated in colour with clear descriptions enabling accurate identification.

Stephen, who is 37 and origi-

nally from the Red Barns Road, is a former student of Scoil Mhuire na nGael and the Marist College who currently works in Cambridge as an entomologist.

According to his mother, Rita, her son has been fascinated with insects ever since he was “knee high to a grasshopper” and this book is his comprehensive guide to the small creatures that he has studied for most of his life to date.

“I can remember Stephen staring intently at a spiders web when he was about 18 months old and just being fascinated by it”, recalled Rita.

Ever since then he just developed fantastic observational skills with regards anything to do with creatures.

He’s delighted with how the book has turned out and he hopes that it will be of great interest to anyone who looks

at insects in their garden and would like to know the name and purpose of these important creatures.“, she explained.

“He worked on the book with his wife Eugenie and Chris Shields who beautifully illustrated in colour all of the insects named in the book. We’re all very proud of him and it’s fantastic to see the finished product after all the hard work they put into it”, she added.

The book which was released just last month has already received glowing reviews in The Irish Times and Irish Examiner. The comprehensive guide is designed to help people appreciate the insect life in their gardens and surroundings or as a handy reference book for anyone interested in the natural world. It is available in Carrolls bookshop, Park Street.

Jail will prevent man committing offences

A man who had been suffering with a drug problem was told that they only way to prevent him from committing crime was to send him to prison.

Arunas Mancius of 18 Carroll Village, Dundalk, was sentenced to four months in

prison at Dundalk District Court after pleading guilty to two theft charges.

The court heard that on February 1 this year the defendant stole a mobile phone to the value of €69.99 from Tesco, Long Walk. On January 14 this year he stole two

bottles of whiskey from the Marshes, valued at €82.32.

The phone was recovered but the whiskey wasn’t.

Barrister, David Costello, stated that his client was originally from Latvia but had been living in Dundalk for 15 years. The 39-year-old de-

fendant apologised for his actions which had been caused by drug difficulties.

He added that Mr Mancius is currently serving a sentence and is due for release on August 23, pointing out that he is now clean and doing well.

The defendant had plans to

seek work as a mechanic on his release.

In imposing the four-month sentence, Judge Flann Brennan stated: ‘This man has a terrible record and it seems to me that the only way to stop him committing offences is to incarcerate him”.

Tidy Towns award is a tribute to Blackrock community Blackrock has been pipped by just one point by Hillsborough, Co. Down for the award for Ireland’s Best Kept Small Town 2014. The awards were presented aboard the S.S. Nomadic in the Titanic Centre in Belfast. Blackrock received 215 points out of 250, while Hillsborough got 216.

Former national Tidy Towns winner Aughrim, Co. Wicklow got

206 points.

Despite missing out for the top prize, Blackrock Tidy Towns chairman, John Horan, was very pleased with the performance.

“This is an amazing achievement for Blackrock. Never in our wildest dreams would we have expected to come so close to Hillsborough, and it’s a tremendous tribute to the whole commu-

nity in Blackrock to have brought the village up to these standards”, he said.

The competition was judged during May, when the village was visited twice by the judges. Adjudication covered seven different categories, with Blackrock beating Hillsborough by one point in one category and equaling them in five others.

Saint Brigid’s Way Pilgrimage a success

Nine days after leaving their starting point in Faughart the St Brigid’s Way pilgrims arrived in Kildare Town centre having completed their magical journey following the ancient path of Brigid, Goddess and Celtic Christian saint.

Dolores Whelan who helped organise the pilgrimage spoke of the wonderful spiritual journey and spectacular landscapes they enjoyed on their journey.

“We had such a wonderful time and everybody on the group got a lot out of our pilgrimage” explained Dolores.

“It was very different to last year as in we had different people, different weather and different experiences.

So many new friendships were made and we all enjoyed the spectacular

scenery including Cuchulainn’s stone, the Famine stone, the Hill of Slane, the beauty of Tara and the wide open spaces of the Curragh.

“We got a great welcome everywhere we went and we spent a wonderful evening in Trim last week listening to traditional Irish musicians in a lovely wee pub. The whole walk was so powerful and very soulful and I think everybody got a lot out of it.”, she added.

Dolores who is a teacher, educator, author and spiritual guide within the Celtic spiritual community said it had been a pleasure to walk the ancient pathway linking the two historical sites.

This is the second year of the Brigid’s Way annual pilgrimage and according to teh Dolores it will be back for a third year in 2015.

However under the “Presentation of Residential Areas and Private Frontages” category Hillsborough beat Blackrock by two points giving them the award.

The grass verges on the approaches to the village, so meticulously maintained by the Community Employment Scheme, were singled out for praise.

Became aggressive in restaurant

A man who became aggressive after a member of staff in a restaurant mistook him for somebody else, created such a scene that Gardai had to be called.

As a result, William Dunon of 66 Dungormely Estate, Co Armagh, appeared at Dundalk District Court to answer a public order charge.

The court heard that on April 6 this year Gardai were called to a disturbance to the outlet on Park St where they observed the defendant acting aggressively to staff.

Barrister Irene Sands stated that her 27-yearold client understood that his behaviour was unacceptable.

She pointed out that there had been a misunderstanding as a member of staff mistook him for someone else, however he realises that he shouldn’t have reacted in that way.

In convicting, Judge Flann Brennan imposed a fine of €250.

Tara Erraught’s stock continues to rise with the news that she will make her debut in the Royal Albert Hall for the world renowned BBC Proms .

Tara who originally hails from Ravensdale has been making waves in the Operatic world for her magnificent voice in recent years.

Dundalk man Brendan McFadden a long time supporter of Tara is planning on making the trip over to London to

support her in one of her biggest concert’s yet.

“A group of us travelled over to watch Tara perform with the Vienna State Opera in Austria last year and we had a fantastic time.

“It was an unbelievable experience and Tara gave an incredible performance as Rosina.

'She took time out afterwards to meet with us all and she is a really great girl. I’m going to try my very best to go to London to watch her perform”, promised Brendan.

The BBC Proms are recognised as the world’s largest classical music festival and are an integral part of any summer in London.

Beginning on July 18 they last for eight weeks and feature 76 concerts at the Albert Hall, sometimes with two on the same night. Tara will perform at 6.30pm on July 22.

Driver panicked when he saw Gardai A driver who panicked when he saw Gardai pleaded guilty to a careless driving charge when he appeared at Dundalk District Court.

The court heard that at 11.50pm on November 7, 2013, William Shields of 48 Cecil St, Newry, Co Down, was observed mounting a footpath to turn away

from a patrol car.

He then drove out the Armagh Road, crossing a continuous white line at Carnbeg and Carrickedmond at speeds of up to 140kph.

Barrister, Irene Sands, stated that her client, who had no previous convictions, panicked because his tax had expired. She

stated that he was stopped by Gardai on a later date and admitted being the driver.

She added that the 24-year-old man is embarrassed by his behaviour and that he understands his driving was unacceptable.

In convicting Mr Shields, Judge Flann Brennan imposed a fine of €373.16.

Man is described Innovative Cormac is one of the country’s youngest App developers as being up to his neck in criminality

A man who was told that he was up to his neck in criminality was warned to stop what he is doing or risk ending up in further trouble.

Con Cash of Mullavalley, Louth Village, denied any knowledge of a stolen van that was found on his property when he appeared at Dundalk District Court to answer a charge of handling stolen property.

Mr Cash stated that the yard was being used by a third party who bought vehicles which would be shipped to Nigeria along with parts. He said he was not being paid rent by the man and didn’t know anything about a stolen van that was found in the yard on November 12, 2012.

However, Judge Flann Brennan dismissed his claims and stated that he believed the defendant knew more than he was telling the court.

“Mr Cash sees no evil, hears no evil and thinks no evil, but this is criminal-

ity. He is up to his neck in criminality and I’m satisfied that he knows more than he admits to.

“He is trying to convince people with idiotic yarns that he is a poor fool – but his is not”, stated Judge Brennan who warned him to stop what he is doing.

“He’d want to get out of what he is up to. The problem is that there would be no thieves if there were no handlers of stolen property. I’m sure he is being paid more than he says”, he added.

In imposing a ninemonth sentence, which was suspended for nine months, the judge stated” “Get everything out of that yard that isn’t yours or you will be in trouble again”.

The court heard that a van which was stolen from Co Westmeath on November 6, 2012, was found in Mr Cash’s yard on November 12 by Gardai. The defendant was subsequently arrested on suspicion of handling stolen goods and

told Gardai that he didn’t know who drove the van to the yard.

In evidence, Mr Cash stated that he had no involvement with buying or selling vehicles in the yard.

He added that he didn’t get paid rent but occasionally did a bit of welding work on the cars. He admitted that he had been previously warned about the activities of the third party.

In answer to a question from Insp Beggy, the defendant stated that despite those warnings and the fact that a stolen vehicle had been found on his property, he was still allowing the man to use his yard.

Solicitor, Paula Tiernan, stated that her client didn’t know the vehicle was stolen and there was no evidence that he handled the property.

He accepted that he was stupid to trust the third party.

Two innovative local teenagers recently became the youngest App developers in Ireland with their own remarkable creation.

Cormac Kinsella (14) from Dundalk and Cian Martin-Bohan (13) from Drogheda combined their knowledge of programming and computer technology to develop the Open Share App, a programme that allows a user to share a post to several social networks simultaneously without the need to re-share.

This means that an individual can post an update on sites such as Twitter, Facebook, Viber, Gmail and Tumblr without leaving the Open Share App. The two young men that designed this contemporary operating system started working on their App over a year ago, communicating with one another largely over Skype and FaceTime.

Cormac, a student at Colaiste Lú in Dundalk and Cian, a pupil at St. Oliver’s Community College in Drogheda, met at CoderDojo, a non-profit coding club that enables young

people to enhance their computer programming skills in a sociable and positive environment.

“CoderDojo was brilliant for the boys as it gave them the opportunity to meet likeminded people”, said Cormac’s proud father, Aidan Kinsella.

Both boys displayed remarkable focus and determination as they worked cooperatively and consistently through all of their technical challenges.

Cormac and Cian were mentored through the process of developing their App by Brendan Murray, along with

local CoderDojo organiser, Graham O’Rourke.

Speaking at the launch of the Open Share App three weeks ago, Mayor Kevin Callan said, “I am most proud of these two young men who are showing what young people from Co Louth can achieve and that we have such great innovators in our county”.

The App is currently available for Android smart phones on Google Play Store, but the boys hope to expand the accessibility to iPhone and Windows Phone users by the end of the year.

Fiona claims Louth title with impressive win Last week the county’s best female riders lined up for the Louth Road Race Women’s Championship and when the dust had settled Fiona Rogers had claimed her first Louth title after an extremely impressive performance.

On the night she was much too strong for her fellow competitors, taking an impressive solo win, with Celine McPhilips leading the rest and Debbie Lundy claiming the bronze.

Open racing over the weekend was held in the county Meath town of Mullagh, with Moynalty Cycling Club hosting their first race on an undulating 29km circuit.

First up it was the underage racing and Cuchulainn picked up two results with Conor McKeown taking second place, while Kevin Trainer was 5th in his race.

the A4s tackled two laps of the circuit and despite the hills it came down to a bunch sprint. In the chaos of the fast finish Gary Mortan picked the right line and timed his sprint to almost perfection to take third place in a finish which required a photo finish to determine the order of the first three riders. This result sees Gary upgraded to the A3 cat-

egory.

The FPM Accountants Summer Cycling league is up to round 13, with just five events to go. The most recent race finished with the steady climb from Davy’s Pub up to the Long Woman’s Grave. By the bottom of the climb group 6 had caught group 5 in front. Once on the climb Alan Bingham attacked bringing with him a number of

riders. As the mountain dragged on this group drove a fierce pace catching all those left out front.

As the line approached Alan Bingham, Tomas McCabe and Liam Dolan had ridden away from everyone else, with Owen Martin being the last to loose contact. In a close sprint Dolan took the victory ahead of Bingham and McCabe.

On Wednesday last Cuchulainn hosted the Leinster 25mile Time Trial Championships. Racing from Carrickmacross to Ardee and back, Stamullen’s Cian Delaney was fastest on the night with a time of 54mins and 24 seconds.

Cuchullain riders to pick up medals across the different categories were Colm Quinn (Silver A1) Owen martin (Vet silver) and Tomas McCabe (A3 Bronze).

The first thing Enda should have done was to sack the Minister for Tourism and then he should have resigned himself. The Government have cost the exchequer €100 million with their carry on. It’s been a shambles.

There is way more important stuff that the Taoiseach of the country should be spending his time doing rather than getting involved in this.

He should concentrate on running the country rather than trying to sort out a Garth Brooks concert.

This whole mess is entirely the fault of Aiken and the GAA. Enda was damned if he got involved and damned if he didn’t. He’s not to blame for any of this. It’s the concert promoter, the GAA and to a lesser extent Dublin City Council.

As usual people have gotten greedy and made a mess of things.

I think it’s a big fuss about nothing.

Obviously you’d feel sorry for Garth Brooks fans but there is much more important stuff going on in the country that the Taoiseach should be looking at. It would be nice if they focused on important matters like the Louth hospital.

I think that there has been a massive over-reaction to the whole thing. I don’t really understand why such a huge deal is being made out of this. I don’t really think Enda should have had anything to do with it.

When he went into work wearing it he got some stick and was called every name under the sun by his workmates”, laughed Heinz.

Heinz who regularly goes back to Oberhausen to meet up with his three brothers and three sisters will for now bask in the glory of another World Cup victory for his homeland.

Starcamp students enjoy the thrill of performing on stage ONE of Ireland’s most renowned performing summer schools started this week at Wellington Hall as part of a record number of camps taking place around the country.

Forty-seven boys and girls happily participated in Starcamp’s performanceorientated activities such as improvisation, audition technique, modern dance and vocal training under the guidance and watchful eye of Louth’s finest acting coaches.

The camp, which received support from Drag-

ons’ Den in 2012, aims to provide children with the perfect environment to become the most confident, self-assured and warmhearted children that they can be.

The kids’ palpable energy was certainly enough to keep their teachers going and smiling brightly, no matter how tired they inevitably got.

This wonderful spirit seemed to permeate every activity and makes for a wonderfully nurturing setting.

Lisa-Marie McCooey, one of the teachers brimming with enthusiasm at

Starcamp, said that although they had a few tears on the first day, everyone had settled in nicely and was eager to show off their talents.

“I love Starcamp because I get to do three of my favourite things: singing, dancing and acting,” said Brooke Shaw who was part of the Megastars dance group.

The fully inclusive nature of the camp ensures that every child has a fantastic experience and develops some new enviable talents.

“We get to make so many new friends and the teach-

ers are really kind and helpful,” said Ella Tang, who wore a brilliant smile throughout the time she performed on stage.

The infinite patience and sprightly nature of the teachers seemed to make for a wonderful experience for all of the Starcamp kids.

Not only do the little entertainers get to experience the thrill of performing arts, but they’ll have the chance to display all of their new skills and talents on Friday, July 18 at 1pm when they take on the magical, fantasy world of Frozen at Wellington Hall.

Local artistic director and facilitator Kwasie Boyce is bringing his newest production to the Spirit Store Stage on July 19.

HOME a short play that looks at racism in Ireland was project managed by Kwasie who says he wanted to

“engage the black community in Dundalk in the arts specifically in theatre, part of this project is to explore the issue of racism in our communities”.

“It is inspired by the brave voices who told their stories of racism. It asks the question

what does it mean to be black in Ireland?”, he added.

The project started only 11 weeks ago and through theatre and actor skills training, participants Catriona Cooney, Temi Pedro, Esther Pedro, Chi Chi and Francis Onwuka developed their

own production examining what ‘home’ means in Irish communities.

The group will be performing their devised and written piece on Saturday July 19, at 7pm in the Spirit Store and admission to the event is free.

Two men have been arrested in Dundalk in connection with an ongoing investigations into car theft. A number of stolen vehicles, car parts and other property were recovered in the planned search in north Louth. The intelligence led operation was carried out by Gardaí from Dundalk assisted by national units on Friday July 11. Two men, both in their 20’s were and detained at Dundalk Station under the provisions of Section 4 – Criminal Justice Act 1984.

Gardaí say investigations are continuing.

Toxic sludge Four containers of toxic sludge were found in two locations in Co Louth last week as north Louth continues to fall victim to the diesel washing trade.

On Thursday July 10, two of the bulk containers were found at Scotsgreen, Balriggan under the Motorway Pass, a regular dumping ground.

A day later, on Friday July 11 a further two containers were discovered dumped at the picturesque entrance to Stephens Town pond in Knockbridge. The private firm contracted to clean up after dumping incidents, McQuillans, were immediately notified and responded.

FOURTEEN members of the Dundalk Venturer Section [1517yr olds], who are part of 1st/2nd/5th Louth Scout Group based on the Castletown Road, returned from Switzerland last week where they had spent 10 days hiking and camping in the Swiss Alps.

The group were based in Kandersteg – an international scout centre and from there they ran their fun, adventurous and challenging programme.

Having arrived and set up camp, the very first day of activities saw a number of the venturers take on with a climb to Doldenhornhutte, at a height of 1915metres. The next day a smaller group took on with the very difficult hike to Frudenhutte, at a height of 2562 metres and ended up in snow and on glaciers.

The next day was more relaxing as group took the plunge in the freezing cold Alpine lake followed by a summer sledge run – a dry tobogganing type course.

After a trip to Bern, the capital of Switzerland the next day was back to hiking with the full group going to Ueschinenhutte at a height of 1890metres. The group

stayed in this hut overnight. Half of the group headed back to base to Kandersteg, while Schwarenbach at a height of 2060metres was the next destination for the remaining members of the group before heading back to base.

The final day of hiking was undertaken by four experienced hikers, who got the go-ahead despite the severe weather warning that was in place, to hike to Schwarenbach where some members of the group were the day before.

The group enjoyed a well deserved meal out in a local restaurant that night where they were joined by Group Leader Michelle Boyle, Beaver Leader Audrey McManus and Cub leader Andrew McManus and their daughter Kate, who all travelled over for the last few days of the camp.

The fun wasn’t over there however, as the group took to the High Ropes course in the scout centre – an obstacle course laid out in the trees with cargo nets, zipwires, tires and other swinging items to traverse over.

Man is warned over Summer camp fever driving at speed reaches Oriel Park

A man was warned never to drive at that speed again after he admitted travelling at 191kph on the M1 motorway.

Sam O’Hara of 30 Latt Crescent, Newry, Co Down, was observed by Gardai travelling on the north bound carriage of the M1 on Sunday June 1 at Newtownbalregan.

The defence barrister stated that his client had been returning from Limerick and was anxious to get home but didn’t realise his speed.

He added that the 37-year-old separated father of two, has a nine-year-old child with autism. On the day in question he had gone to Limerick to have

a guitar signed by Rory Gallagher’s band with the intention of having the instrument auctioned to raise funds for his child’s school.

The barrister added that he hadn’t been thinking of his speed and with no other cars around, his driving was careless rather than dangerous. He stated that Mr O’Hara needs to drive for his work.

Judge Flann Brennan stated that in view of the guilty plea and the fact that there were no other vehicles on the road, he would accept the careless driving charge. He warned Mr O’Hara not to drive like that again as he imposed a €500 fine.

RAPE Crisis North East is offering you the opportunity to attend a Helpline Training Programme which will commence on Wednesday September 17 and finish on Thursday Otober 23.

Training is free and in return, the centre will ask you to commit to four hours of your time per week to provide telephone counselling support to survivors of Rape Crisis North East.

The summer camp season sprung into life last week as 97 boys and girls happily participated in the FAI soccer camp at Oriel Park under the guidance and watchful eye of Louth’s finest coaches The camp aims to provide children between the ages of six and 14 with the perfect environment to ease the restlessness summer brings.

Kids of all abilities got the opportunity to maximise their shooting, defending and dribbling skills while making new and lasting friendship.

The kids’ palpable energy was certainly enough to keep the coaches going and smiling brightly, no matter how tired they inevitably got. This wonderful spirit seemed to permeate every activity, every child and every coach.

Niall McQuillan, one of the Soccer Summer School’s participants, said that the camp was “great craic and very en-

joyable” and that he loved having the chance to meet new people.

Two of Niall’s friends at the camp, Declan Curtin and Padraig Grennan, agreed that the experience had been brilliant and that they were looking forward to their mini-league later that afternoon.

All of the kids were delighted with their exclusive football kits and eager to show off the tricks they had picked up earlier on in the week.

Dundalk’s European adventures continue tomorrow evening as they prepare to take on Croatian side Hajduk Split in a game which is sure to fill Oriel Park to the rafters.

Having comfortably seen off Luxembourg outfit Jeunesse Esch in round one Dundalk face a much sterner test against a side which finished third in last seasons Croatian league.

In what is shaping up to be a memorable season Stephen Kenny’s men gave themselves the perfect boost for tomor-

row nights game with a battling 1-0 away win in Tallaght against title rovers Shamrock Rovers.

The victory put the Lilywhites back on top of the Premier Division and extends their unbeaten run to 12 games with May’s Setanta Cup final loss to Sligo the last time they tasted defeat.

Big European nights were a common occurrence in Oriel Park during the 1970s and 80s as huge clubs like PSV, Liverpool, Celtic, Tottenham and Porto visited Dundalk. However, they have become some-

thing of a rarity in recent years with 2010s trip to Legia Warsaw the last experience of European football for the club.

Dundalk last played Hajduk Split 37 years ago in the Cup Winners Cup with the Lilywhites winning 1-0 in the home leg before going down 4-0 in the return match.

Meanwhile, Dundalk Football Club are proposing to charter a flight to Split, for the away leg of the Europa League second qualifying round, second-leg match against HNK Hajduk Split. It is envisaged that the club will fly out in the early

morning of Wednesday, July 23, with a one night stop over, and return immediately after the match on Thursday, July 24. There will be a limited number of seats for supporters on this flight.

Cars sales on the increase

More than 60 cars were purchased in Louth on the first day of the ‘142’ registration period.

The change over happened on Tuesday July 1 when 69 people bought their new vehicle. This is considerably higher than the volume bought on the first day of the new registration initiative. Last year only 17 cars were bought.

This is the second year of the initiative which was designed to encourage more yearround car purchasing and to boost the lag that took place in the latter part of the year.

Director General of SIMI, Alan Nolan said, “We knew that Tuesday was going to be one of the busiest days of the year for car sales but we didn’t expect such a good start compared to last year, which was the first year for the new

So far this year car sales are up on 2013, there were 1,100 new registrations in Co Louth last year but already there have been 1,489 in the first six months of 2014. The uplift represents a 35% increase at the half way mark.

Man stole goods in a moment of madness

A man whose Social Welfare payments had been stopped for eight weeks resorted to stealing groceries in what was described as a “moment of madness”.

Lukus Prus of 103 Manydown Close, Red Barns Road, Dundalk, pleaded guilty to a

charge of theft when he appeared at Dundalk District Court following the incident on April 18 this year.

The court heard that the defendant entered Tesco, Long Walk, on that date and filled a bag with groceries to the value

of €45.89 before leaving without paying.

Those goods were all recovered but he also drank a carton of orange juice valued at €1.69.

Dundalk Karate students triumph once again Students of Dundalk Karate triumphed yet again during a recent grading in the Redeemer Family Resource Centre where everyone was put through their paces.

Everything from basic punches, blocks, kicks to combinations, Katas (form), Kumite (fighting) was covered and each and every member proved that not only had they been

putting in the hours in the dojo training, but that they were more than ready for their next Kyu Grading.

Colourful beginning to Dundalk Pride Week

The Dundalk Pride week kicked off in a fountain of colour and with a family focus this week with the launch taking place in the Outcomers Centre on Monday.

‘Because Family Matters’ is the theme of this year’s event and to celebrate local mother and daughter Sharon Canning and Molly Duff who spoke of their experiences, Sharon who told her family she was lesbian and Molly on her reaction.

Molly Duff gave a powerful and emotional speech describing her response to being told her mother was gay. She spoke of her immediate acceptance of the news and how the mother and daughter love and bond was not affected by her mother’s sexuality.

She also spoke about the ongoing struggle for equal rights in Ireland and said that every person has the right to exist without persecution.

Her mother, Sharon followed, and

spoke about the fear she felt about breaking the news to her family. The mother of two described her concern for her children on coming out seven years ago and living in a small village.

“They are very smart and very accepting and they have been an inspiration to me,” she said of her two children.

She spoke of some of the hostility she suffered from some individuals in her community, but also described the support she received and how

over time things have changed, how she met her partner who had children too and how the family still live happily in the village.

The pride flag flew proudly on County Hall which was commended by Fine Gael TD Jerry Buttimer who was invited to speak about his experiences as a gay man and the importance of working towards an integrated society at the launch.

Moran appeals for more social housing in Louth

Senator Mary Moran called for further government investment for social housing in Co Louth following the announcement last week that €76k was to

be funnelled into refurbishing the local social housing stock.

The Labour Senator said that while she welcomes the announcement of the

funding by Minister for Housing and Planning, Jan O’Sullivan TD, more needs to be done.

Josephine proves an inspiration to us all

DUNDALK woman Josephine Cassidy is proving to us all that every stage of life is an opportunity to learn and grow.

Following the sudden passing of her husband six years ago, 57-yearold Josephine decided to enrol in a weekly history class with the Vocational Training Opportunities Scheme (VTOS).

Having left school at the age of 14 due to her difficulties with Irish, Josephine hoped that the scheme would improve her general level of education and reignite her passion for learning.

The mother of four soon realised that she could avail of her tutors’ support and complete her Leaving Certificate within a warm and fully inclusive setting.

The Vocational Training Opportunities Scheme provides a range of courses to meet the education and training needs of those who are seeking employment.

Just over a year after opening the Adult Education Centre’s green door, Josephine was receiving her Leaving Certificate results along with her youngest son.

Ardee Youth Band play all the right notes The Ardee Concert Youth Band travelled to the South of Ireland Band Championships in Clonakilty, on Saturday July 5 at 5.30am. The band made the journey with their conductor John Gaynor and all their supporters in family and friends.

This was their first time to perform in the event and they stole the show taking home The Shanley Cup for first prize and The Jack O’Mahony Memorial Cup was awarded to their

conductor John Gaynor for Best Musicianship.

After a quick rehearsal upon arrival in the hotel where the Senior Band were staying, John and the Band took to the stage at 1pm to perform their competition entry which was made up of the Florentiner March by Julius Fucik, A band arrangement of Skyfall and Green Day’s Boulevard of Broken Dreams along with Juan for the Road by Fergal

By 1.45pm the adjudicator was announcing the results. The tension was rife throughout the hall and after a long pause first place was awarded to Ardee Concert Youth Band on 86 Points, With this announcement the Ardee Band and their many supporters let out a rapturous applause.

The adjudicator for the section was Harry Kelly of Clondalkin Concert Band and Mullingar Town Band. He praised Ardee on their balance as a band, their good articulation and noted their performance was well above the opposition.

As the band had to depart Clonakilty for

the long but rewarding journey back to Ardee, before the awards ceremony on Saturday Night a special awards night was held in the Bohemian Centre on July 10 and the Memorial Cups where presented to John and the band by Band Chairman Dermot Murray on behalf of the adjudicator.

The Senior band also performed on the day under the Baton of Brendan Breslin in the senior section.

The adjudicator for the section was John Doyle of Leyland and Black Dyke Brass Bands. The band won third prize of nine bands with a score of 95 points; along with the prize for best woodwind and the prize for the best celebratory piece for the occasion of the 35th anniversary of the championships.

Local dancers claim impressive medal haul

The locally based McGee School of Irish Dance enjoyed extraordinary success at the recent Oireachtas Rince Uladh held in Dundalk.

Collectively they took home 92 medals including 13 first place, nine second place and three third place medals.

Teacher Dervla McGee, who previously toured with Riverdance was delighted with the outstanding results. Dancers are now busy preparing for the Ulster Championships, which are also to be held in the Fairways Hotel, in November.

“It was a great opportunity for local children to be able to compete in such a prestigious event in their home town - it has been 25 years since the event was last held in Dundalk”, added Dervla who is assisted by her sister, Nicola and Niamh Eustace.

THE NEW OPEL CORSA

Opel has released the first official photograph of the new Corsa which will go in production toward the end of 2014, with the first cars being delivered in January 2015.

The new Corsa shares some the underpinnings with its predecessor with a near identical footprint but there is a redesigned chassis, new exterior panels and a completely new interior.

There is a choice of diesel and petrol engines for the new hatchback model, which will be available in both 3 and 5 doors.

Opel are introducing a 1.0-litre, 3-cylinder ECOTEC Direct Injection Turbo petrol engine with choice of 90PS or 115PS outputs plus a new version of their 1.4 turbo petrol engine outputting 100PS/ 200Nm. There will also be two normally aspirated 1.2 and 1.4 petrol units and a

1.3 CDTi diesel.

With the choice of either a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic gearbox depending on the engine choice.

Opel are introducing a new range of tech for the Corsa, including IntelliLink which operates through a 7-inch colour

touchscreen, and can be controlled via apps such as BringGo (for navigation), Stitcher and TuneIn (for global radio channels and internet podcasts). The system is compatible with both Apple and Android ‘phones, and incorporates additional features, such as voice command, Bluetooth, Siri Eyes Free and FlexDock, an area for locating/charging your mobile phone. Options include Side Blindspot Alert, High Beam Assist, Lane Departure Warning, bixenon lights and a rearview camera.
