Gardaí in Dundalk are investigating a hit and run incident which occurred on the Dublin Road at approximately 10:20am on Monday morning.

Onlookers watched in shock as a black hatchback car mounted the footpath at speed towards a male in his 20s who was trying to run away from the vehicle.

The car struck the man on the footpath close to the Malthouse pub before driving away from the scene at speed.

The injured party was knocked down and later brought to the hospital with serious injuries including a broken collar bone.

The black hatchback car drove towards Dundalk town centre, breaking the lights at Hill St. Bridge before turning right down the Avenue Road.

Investigating Gardai believe that the driver of the car made a deliberate attempt to target the pedestrian and are asking any witnesses to this incident to contact Dundalk Garda Station as soon as possible.

Dundalk filmmaker Aislinn Clarke will introduce her debut feature film, The Devil’s Doorway, at An Táin Arts Centre on January 29.

International Film Festival before opening in cinemas across the US in July. The unsettling film, set in a Magdalene laundry in 1960, has been released all over the world and has appeared on several end of year ‘Best Horror Film of 2018’ lists.

According to Aislinn she is looking forward to bringing the movie back to Dundalk for a screening in front of a home crowd.

“It’s really nice to be screening the film in my hometown after travelling all over the world with it. The film has been released in America, Canada, the UK, Japan, the Middle East, Brazil, Spain, New Zealand and Australia.

Of course it’s now released in Ireland too (it’s on Amazon Prime, Sky Movies and iTunes and will be passed on to Film Four in the next few weeks) and I’ve been present at multiple screenings in Dublin, so it’s about time it will be shown on a big screen in Dundalk.

“I’m looking forward to it. There have been other standout screenings - the American theatrical release premiere in New York was pretty great - but a home crowd will always be special,” acknowledged Aislinn.

Aislinn’s love of horror was passed down to her by her dad Johnny and having been bullied at school she found horror films a means of escape from every day anxieties.

“Film is in general dominated by men, but particularly genre film. There have been a handful of women who have made horror films over the years (Kathryn Bigelow made Near Dark and Mary Harron

made American Psycho for example) but there has been a welcome boom in critically acclaimed female led horror in the past two years.

I’m told I’m the first Irish woman to have made an internationally distributed horror film which is quite amazing.

“I’ve been a horror fan since childhood.

My father, Johnny Clarke, who would be remembered by many as a former McCann’s breadman, was a big horror fan when I was a child. During the 80s we used to rent horror films on Friday nights and I would watch them over and over until the video had to be returned.

“One of the first I saw was Nightmare on Elm St and I was obsessed with it. I’ve been lucky to get to know the producer and some of the cast of that film over the past year, which is quite amazing now when I think back on my childhood and how much I loved that film. I went on to study Film at BA

Escaped conviction on cocaine charge A man who was found with €40 worth of cocaine escaped a conviction at Dundalk District Court after making a €150 contribution to St Vincent de Paul.

we were heading to the world premiere in Seattle I noticed a huge queue going right down the street and around a corner, hundreds of people.

“I thought there must be something big on and the driver said ‘see that queue? They’re queuing for your movie’. I was stunned. That was quite a night.

“I have other films in the works and a TV series too. I work a lot in the horror and thriller arena, but I would never close myself off to other genres. I don’t see a rom-com happening anytime soon though.

Screen Ireland have just awarded me funding for a feature film called Rainy Days, a post-apocalyptic drama with child protagonists, so I’m busy writing that at the minute.

“2018 was a great year for me. High points were making it onto several Best Horror Films of 2018 lists and being nominated for the Screen International Rising Star Award at London’s Frightfest and the Bingham Ray New Talent Award at the Galway Film Fleadh.

positive reviews from major publications like Screen International, Empire, Entertainment Weekly, and Indiewire, and from well-respected critics like Walter Chaw and Kim Newman were highlights also. I also joined the academic staff at Queens University Belfast as a lecturer

in Scriptwriting and Film and have had my film work written about in several academic books on horror cinema. Here’s hoping 2019 is just as good!,” stated Aislinn.

St. Vincent’s debating team going from strength to strength

St. Vincent’s Debating team is going from strength to strength, as they built on their massive successes at national level last year which saw them scoop two national titles.

Under the tutelage of their coach, Victoria O’Hagan, the girls have gone on to secure places in the finals of two exciting new competitions. St. Vincent’s has a strong tradition of equipping its students to become ambassadors for the spoken word and encourages all of their students to develop their voice, to stand up and to have their voices heard.

Emma Connolly, a fifth year student in St. Vincent’s Secondary has made her way to the national final of the Oireachtas TedEd Talks series.

She is one of 16 students who have been selected nationally to participate in a conference that will see her write, develop and deliver a Ted talk in the Round Room of the Mansion House on Tuesday January 22.

The competition has been conceived of as a commemoration of 100 years of women’s suffrage. To mark the centenary, the Houses of the Oireachtas is hosting a programme of events that will highlight the

Doireann Minford, Emma Connolly, Sadbh Boylan and Queensley Odidi. history of the suffrage movement and its leaders in Ireland and the impact of wider voting rights.

As well as securing the right of women to vote, 1918 was also the year in which the first woman was elected to the British Parliament at Westminster. Countess Markievicz, who represented a Dublin constituency, never took her seat at Westminster.

Instead, she joined the revolutionary first Dáil, becoming the first female TD. Emma will blaze a trail for female public speakers as she makes her Oireachtas debut in January.

Meanwhile, Queensley Odidi has secured her place in the final of the Soroptimist Public

Speaking Competition this month. Queensley impressed adjudicators and audience members alike when she made her passionate speech on the importance of women being empowered as active citizens in public life. In addition to attaining her place in the final which takes place in Athlone, Queensley was awarded the Mary Barrett perpetual trophy for excellence in communication.

Following on from her national win in the Action Aid speech competition which saw her jet off to Brussells in June, Sadbh Boylan accompanied by Doireann Minford have developed a short video on the importance of women getting involved

in politics.

To mark the centenary of women’s suffrage a number of the videos will be screened in Dublin Castle and from those videos screened, the winner will be chosen. The winning team and their teacher will join Ireland’s official delegation travelling to the United Nations Headquarters in New York to attend the 63rd session of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women from 11 to 13 March.

There they will have an opportunity to attend the opening of the session, and a number of the debates, exhibitions and lectures in the extensive programme of events taking place during the session.

Local hillwalkers are urged to stay safe

Hillwalkers and mountain climbers have been warned to stay safe following a number of incidents in the Mourne and Cooley mountains over the weekend.

Two men died in separate incidents in the Mourne mountains over the weekend while a man was airlifted to hospital after damaging his ankle in the Cooley mountains.

Windy conditions and slippy ground were thought to be factors and George Campbell who is the officer in charge of the Greenore Coast Guard service warned walkers to be careful particularly during this time of year.

The Greenore Coastguard and Irish Coast Guard helicopter Rescue 116 were called to assist a hillwalker who was injured on the Cooley Mountains yesterday afternoon.

We were called in when the walker involved sustained an ankle injury. He was with a group of people who were looking after him when we arrived but we are not sure if he was walking on his own beforehand.

The conditions on Sunday were very windy and as well as that the ground was slippy due to the mist. The helicopter couldn’t perform an air winch due to the turbulence

so it landed and the man was airlifted to hospital where I believe his injuries are not too serious.

“We weren’t involved in the incident of the two guys that lost their lives in the Mourne mountains but we send our condolences to their families.

The incidents over the weekend highlight the dangers of walking in the mountains in poor conditions especially for people with little experience. We urge people to be very careful out there and to walk with extreme caution if they are out on a day when conditions are not calm,” advised George.

Govt must activate all contingencies to protect businesses from hard Brexit - Breathnach Fianna Fáil TD for Louth and East Meath Declan Breathnach says he is concerned that by the lack of urgency with which the Government is activating contingency plans to protect exposed businesses from a hard Brexit.

A series of Parliamentary Question replies received by my colleague, Deputy Billy Kelleher reveal that the government has yet to formally make a request at EU level for changes to be made to State aid ceilings to protect Irish enterprises and exporting companies from a no-deal Brexit scenario.

Deputy Breathnach said, “The March 29th deadline is fast approaching and I am very concerned that the Government does not appear to realise how urgent these contingency plans are. While Minister Heather Humphreys talks about a Technical Working Group on State aid being established between her Department, Enterprise Ireland, the Department of Agriculture and the Directorate General for Competition, this body is only examining Brexit support schemes within current State aid rules.

“The government appears to have made no application to the EU to

change the State aid ceilings, as it is entitled to do under Article 107 of the EU Treaties, which empowers the Commission to declare State aid compatible with the common market “to remedy a serious disturbance in the economy of a Member State”.

“If this article was invoked, the government would be able to introduce a higher level of grant aid for support schemes to vulnerable export businesses in exposed sectors.

Given that we are facing the real prospect of a no-deal Brexit; this represents a colossal disturbance to the Irish economy. When you look at businesses in border regions such as Dundalk and the problems they will face in a no-deal scenario, action is urgently needed to support them when the crisis hits.

“Ireland should immediately seek approval at EU level for current State aid rules to be adapted for a temporary period. “It is extremely worrying that the government has failed to apply to the EU for a change in the rules, however, even at this late stage it would make a huge difference to small and medium businesses that need every effort to be made to secure support for them to protect them from a hard Brexit”.

A Gala Ball to raise awareness of the work of the Sabrina Ryan Foundation is being held in the Carrickdale Hotel on Saturday February 2.

The family-run charity was established in memory of Sabrina Ryan who passed away from a rare form of lung cancer at the age of 32. All of the money raised by the organisation goes directly to help people affected by cancer.

Louth County Council hands over new school building for Coláiste Chú Chulainn Louth County Council has formally handed over the new school building for Coláiste Chú Chulainn to Louth Meath Education and Training Board. The keys of the building were officially presented to Cathaoirleach of Louth Meath Education and Training Board, Sharon Tolan by Chief Executive of Louth County Council, Joan Martin on Friday 21st December 2018.

The new building, which is home to Coláiste Chú Chulainn and Coláiste Lú, can cater for up to 1,000 students. Both schools operate under the auspices of Louth Meath Education and Training Board.

As part of an agreement with the Department of Education and Skills, Louth County Council was responsible for overseeing the delivery of the new building, which is located at the Marshes, Dundalk. The Council procured the site and arranged the construction contract with Ganson Building & Civil Engineering

Garvey welcomes ramps repair for Marian Park Local activist Eugene Garvey has welcomed the inclusion of the repair of the ramps in Marian Park in this year’s list of Council’s works.

Garvey, the Sinn Féin local election candidate, first raised the issue with the Council last November. “The ramps have deteriorated to such an extent that they are more

likely to do more harm than good. Since raising this in November we have had poor weather which has caused even further damage.

“The work to repair these ramps has been included in the Council’s Works Programme for this year and I look forward to having the road restored to its original standard.”

Enterprising students urged to make a mark

Secondary school students across Louth have their eyes on a Croke Park Final in May as the Local Enterprise Office’s Student Enterprise Programme for 2018/2019 was launched in December.

Over 1100 students from 17 secondary schools in Louth are taking part in this year’s Student Enterprise Programme that was launched

by Pat Breen, Minister for Trade, Employment, Business, EU Digital Single Market and Data Protection and rugby player Josh Van Der Flier who is Student Enterprise Programme Ambassador for this year.

Ireland’s largest second level business initiative, funded by the Government of Ireland through Enterprise Ireland and delivered by the 31 Local Enterprise Offices in local authorities throughout the country, saw over 26,000 students from 512 secondary schools across the country take part in 2018.

The programme supports

students to create, design and market their own business, all with the hope of reaching the National Finals in Croke Park on May 3rd.

Louth has a strong track record when it comes to successful student entrepreneurs.

For example Students from Sacred Heart Secondary School in Drogheda won an award at the Student Enterprise Programme National Finals in Croke Park in May 2018.

Speaking to some of the students involved in this year’s programme at the event, Minister Breen emphasised the importance of instilling entrepreneurship in future business leaders.

“It is imperative that we try to give the next generation of entrepreneurs a real understanding and passion for how businesses work. We need creative young minds coming through who want to create their own businesses in the future and create jobs in

Ireland.

Thomas McEvoy with Local Enterprise Office Louth said: “The Student Enterprise Programme is designed to engage and develop students’ entrepreneurial drive.

It gives them a flavour of business and the opportunity to bring some of their fantastic ideas to life.

“The 31 Local Enterprise Offices in local authorities across the country work closely with the schools but it’s the enthusiasm of the students that shines though along with some amazing ideas.

“We have seen so many students through the programme that continue their business in the years after the programme and that’s a testament to the work of the teachers involved and the programme itself.”

Suspended sentence for man after cannabis found in home A man who was found with €250 worth of cannabis and weighing scales in his home was given a four-month suspended sentence at Dundalk District Court.

Brendan O’Hanlon (23) of 5 Patrick St, Dundalk, admitted the offence at his home on April 15 last year after Gardai con-

ducted a search.

Solicitor Paula Tiernan stated that it was a relatively small amount of the drug that was found and that Mr O’Hanlon was fully co-operative with Gardai on the day. She revealed that the defendant was raised in sad circumstances as both his parents died when he was young

and that he had fallen in with a bad crowd.

As the defendant had not come to Garda attention in some time she asked that he be treated leniently as he had learned from his mistakes. In convicting, Judge John Cheatle imposed a four-month sentence which he suspended for 12 months.

This follows calls Garvey received from residents of Oakland Park who discovered bulk items discarded in an alleyway in the area.

“There was a suite of furniture, a mattress that had been set on fire and even garden items like trees just dumped there. I talked to a few of the residents

and they reported seeing a van in the area and believe this is where the rubbish came from.”

Garvey reminded people that “paying ‘a man with a van’ to come and collect rubbish from your home does not exonerate you from responsibility or possible prosecution, even if you have paid someone in good faith.”

Garvey said “It is the responsibility of the householder to ensure they use licenced waste collectors to dispose of their

rubbish. If these people are paid to take away your items and end up dumping them in an alleyway or at a beauty spot, then it is still the householder that will face prosecution as it is their responsibility to ensure it has been disposed of appropriately.”

In the meantime, Garvey has reported this incident to the Council and called on all residents to be vigilant especially at this time of year when people have more waste than normal.

in Brief Feast Of St Brigid

A Triduum in honour of St Brigid will take place at St Brigid’s Shrine, Faughart, from Wednesday January 30 to Friday February 1.

On Wednesday and Thursday nights there will be a Mass and blessing with the Relic of St Brigid at 7.30pm with celebrants Fr Dermot Maloney and Fr Oliver Stansfield.

On St Brigid’s Day Mass and blessing will be celebrated

by Fr Garrett Campbell at 11am while the Candlelight Procession from Faughart Graveyard to the Shrine will commence at 8pm.

This is the 43rd staging to the procession and will take place regardless of weather conditions. There will be Rosary and prayers en route. There is limited parking at the summit of the hill and participants are asked to park at the Shrine and walk to the graveyard for 7.45pm.

Dundalk and Fyffes to host Family Fan Day As part of their preparations for the new 2019 football season, Dundalk Football Club and club sponsor Fyffes are teaming up to host a Family Fan Day’ which will take place at Oriel Park at Noon on Sunday, January 27.

Designed as an open doors, free-to-all event, the occasion is designed to attract supporters, families, amateur players and the community alike, allowing all present to get an insight into what it takes to be a championship winning team and achieve success in two of Ireland’s toughest sporting competitions.

Taking the form of an open training session, attendees will be given a ‘behind-the-scenes’ peek at the team in action, as players and coaches prepare to defend their league and cup

titles. Content will include a brief warm up; passing, crossing and finishing techniques, followed by a small five-a-side match. Afterwards, players will mingle so that all present can meet and greet their heroes and capture their autographs.

Adding fun to the occasion will be the presence of the popular Fyffes mascot ‘Freddy Fyffes’, who will have some goodies to hand out.

Marking the first joint initiative between Dundalk FC and Fyffes since their renewed sponsorship was announced, the event is described by their marketing manager Emma Hunt-Duffy as the first step in giving back to the community.

“Like everyone in the town, we are proud of all the club has achieved and we encourage everybody to join us at Oriel

Park and bring the ‘feel-good factor’ ahead of what will be a challenging new season for Vinny and the team.

“This will be a fun, interactive day and a chance for families, children and fans to meet their local heroes and maybe even get a few selfies,” she added.

The sentiment was echoed by new Dundalk FC Head Coach, Vinny Perth.

“As we head into a new season, we feel that an open training session will give our supporters a great opportunity to see our players at work, and hopefully a chance to meet as many as possible. RCNE looking to recruit volunteers Rape Crisis North East is offering you the opportunity to attend a Helpline Training Programme which will commence on Wednesday February 6 and finish on Friday March 14. The training is free and in return, we will ask you to commit to four hours of your time per week to provide telephone counselling support to survivors of rape

and sexual violence.

Training will take place at Cherrywood Counselling Centre, Great Northern Distillery Offices, Carrick Road and involves 12 day workshops over six weeks (Wednesdays and Thursdays from 9.30am to 4pm).

Breathnach welcomes new Garda Protective Services Unit for Louth Fianna Fáil TD for Louth, Declan Breathnach has welcomed the opening of the new Garda Protective Services Unit which will investigate serious crimes including domestic abuse and sexual offences.

Deputy Breathnach was commenting as the Unit was officially opened in Castlebellingham.

“The opening of the new Garda Protective Services Unit in Louth marks a new chapter in the investigation of specialised offences. I was delighted to attend the official opening and to see it become operational.

“This new unit is designed to provide protection services to some of the most vulnerable cohorts of people, including victims of sexual, domestic or child abuse, prostitution and human trafficking.

“Victims of sexual, domestic and gender based violence can be confident and take comfort in the knowledge that if they report a crime their cases will be investigated in a consistently high quality manner by Gardaí specifically trained in these cases.

Assault witnesses sought

Witnesses are being sought for an incident which occurred WANTED—Second hand car wanted. 2-4 outside Tesco Extra on January years old. Low mileage. VW Golf, Toyota or 10 at approximately 3:30pm. On the same evening another house in Bay Estate had its rear door smashed open between 5pm and midnight. Nothing was taken and the burglar fled the scene on foot.

Two days later on the 11th of January between 7pm and 8:30pm a house was also burgled. The houseowner left their house at 7pm and while they were away both the front and back doors were forced open. It is presently not clear of anything was taken.

Meanwhile a house on the Alphonsus Road was also burgled on the 12th of January between 3:30pm and 8:30pm.

On the 14th January at Rockmarshall Fitzpatrick’s Bar and Restaurant was broken into at approximately 4am.

Three males wearing balaclavas entered the premises and took a safe which contained a sum of money.

A black Vauxhall Astra was possible used in the burglary and witnesses are asked to contact Gardaí in Dundalk.

Sharon Lennon, Deputy Director of the United Nations Policy in the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade returned for a visit to her old school St Mary’s to speak about the work of Ireland’s Embassy network.

The visit was the first phase of ‘Global Schools’ programme, which will see Irish Ambassadors and peacekeepers visit over 40 secondary schools around Ireland.

She was accompanied by Deputy Secretary General Brendan Rogers (a former CBS student) and Third Secretary Raymond Mullen (a past pupil of De La Salle) as she addressed the students about the Global Ireland programme.

the help of sixth year student Israel Olatunde the UN flag was presented and raised. The group later travelled to Colaiste Rís to give a similar presentation to students there. The idea of the programme is to give students around the country the chance to learn about our role in a changing world from diplomats and peacekeepers who have served Ireland abroad.

The ‘Global Schools’ programme will bring a deeper understanding of how UN membership has been central to our foreign policy, and has played a significant role in Ireland’s history. Each school was presented with a UN flag and a copy of the preamble of the UN Charter, in recognition of Ireland’s contributions to addressing the biggest challenges fac-

ing our world today through peacekeeping, international development, human rights and disarmament.

This forms part of the ‘Global Ireland’ programme – the Government’s strategy for doubling Ireland’s international impact by 2025. In conjunction with the Departments of Education and Skills, and Defence, the ‘Global Schools’

programme will run throughout 2019, with staff from the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and Irish UN peacekeepers who have served abroad visiting secondary schools to engage students in the scope and ambition of ‘Global Ireland’.

Chamber urge public for draft regional plan support New programme

Dundalk Chamber of Commerce PRO, Paddy Malone has urged for one final push to ensure that the people of Dundalk show support for the Draft Regional Plan which outlines plans on how money will be spent to help support Dundalk’s new status as a gateway town and regional growth centre.

Last February it was announced that The Drogheda-DundalkNewry corridor would be a key priority for the Government as part of its ‘Ireland 2040 – Our Plan’ strategy with the region recognised in the context of the DublinBelfast economic corridor. Dundalk are set to benefit to the tune of roughly €1 billion euro to regenerate the town as an economic growth centre.

Dundalk were not initially earmarked to be part of the €116 billion project but some strong lobbying from Louth County Council and Dundalk Chamber of Commerce convinced government officials that the town was ideally placed on the M1 corridor to be one of

the growth centres outlined in the draft plans.

The vision provided for the draft plan would see Dundalk act as a regional growth centre and achieve a population target of 50,000 by 2031.

To cater for these extra people there would be a focus of regeneration all over the town including an integrated transport system This area has been recognised in the strategy in the context of the Dublin-Belfast economic corridor as important cross border networks for regional develop-

ment.

The €116 billion project was launched in IT Sligo with Dundalk set to be one of the towns who benefits from the infrastructural plans with around €1 billion earmarked for regenerating the town as an economic growth centre. The public consultation for people to outline their support for the draft proposals ends on January 23 and in advance of that the chamber are holding a public meeting on January 21 in the Dundalk museum at 6:30pm.

According to Dundalk Chamber of Commerce PRO Paddy Malone it is vitally important that people are seen to support the plans and he has urged as many people as possible to confirm that support by sending their support in the form of a submission to the East Midland Regional Authority.

“I met with Minister Eoghan Murphy and invited him to Dundalk in June 2017. Originally our meeting with him, which was also attended

“The Chamber submission, which we gave to Louth CC before submission, took on board the linear city but also included Newry. We also made significant proposals regarding the North and the issue of Brexit.

“When the document was published in November 2017 our concerns had been ad-

dressed. The M1 corridor was to be a key growth area. The plan was to be an integrated plan meaning that infrastructure projects, transport, communications, health and others would all be part of an overall whole Draft Regional Plan.

“The draft regional plan sees the M1 corridor being the key growth region. It gives an emphasis on both Drogheda and Dundalk as regional growth centres. The plan identifies key areas including: Employment, connectivity, climate change and tourism. It invites the regional centres to bid for Capital Projects within the 2040 budget. Louth CC has already had success in this area. In the context of Dundalk it sees potential in Cross border activities, tourism, DKIT and others.

for substance abuse recovery

Turas Counselling Services, a not-for-profit group providing addiction supports to people in the North East, is running a 15-week structured day programme from February 5. The programme involves group support and workshops towards building participants self-belief and delves into the underlying causes of their addiction.

It is delivered in an understanding, non-judgmental and supportive environment and helps people to personally develop in their recovery from addiction.

To join the programme people must be at least one month sober from their substance of choice or stabilised on prescribed medication, over 18 years, willing to attend one day per week for five weeks and two days per week for ten weeks and also attend weekly one-to-one counselling sessions.

A range of workshops are offered on topics including relationships, relapse prevention, anger management etc. underpinned by a focus on building a better future.

“The programme is a unique and excellent opportunity for people in the North East to engage self-exploration in regard to their addiction. Past participants have found it hugely beneficial and many have gone on to find employment after completing it,” said Alan Duff, Turas Lead Facilitator on the Structured Day Programme.

This service is provided free of charge to recovering substance misusers within the North Eastern Area, who fulfil the above criteria.

Print exhibition The Leinster Printmaking Studio is celebrating its 20th Anniversary with a major touring exhibition. To mark the occasion the studio has invited all members past and present as well as guest printmakers who had participated in previous exhibitions to take part. It will visit An Táin Arts Centre, until February 16.

The theme for the exhibition has been left open to allow the artists to demonstrate their influences and inspirations as well as their own personal style. Studio members include Margaret Becker, Amelia Peart, Alice Beresford, Pamela de Bri, Val Hennigan and Michelle Sweetman.

Constance Short, a familiar figure in the Dundalk Arts scene, has also been invited to exhibit.

As well as being an es-

tablished artist, Constance is also known for setting up the arts office for Dundalk UDC (now Louth County Council) on a consultative basis from 1987 – 1990 and bringing major artists, poets and theatre groups to Dundalk as well as initiating many arts in community projects, one of which had 3000 participants in DKIT. The exhibition also includes the work of Claire Halpin who is also recognised for her work on “Alive and Mostly Female” and “Picture This” with Louth County Council, which brings the rich resource of the Visual Art Collection of Louth County Council to a select number of primary and secondary schools.

Family time at An Tain Arts Centre The January to April programme at An Tain Arts Centre has a diverse range of family fun events to bring you together.

First up is our babyfriendly screening of Tully on January 19 at 1pm. Tully tells the story of a mother of three who is gifted a night nanny and forms a unique bond with the thoughtful, unpredictable young nanny Tully. This screening with softer volume, brighter lights and extra space for prams is aimed at parents/ guardians and their babies under two years of age. Tickets are €5 for one parent and one baby. The Drama Workshop term kicks off on Friday January 18. The term is €50 for 6 weeks and runs Fridays 4pm – 5pm. Suit-

WELCOME NEWS AS PETROL PRICES HIT 16 MONTH-LOW

The start of a new year brought some positive news for Irish motorists, as fuel prices trended downwards for the second successive month, following a 2018 which had been largely dominated by high fuel costs.

According to the AA’s latest monthly

fuel prices survey, a litre of petrol currently costs 132.9c on average – down from 136.9c in December 2018. Meanwhile, diesel car owners can expect to pay 127.9c per litre on average – a drop of 4c from the previous month.

The latest decrease in pump prices means

that the cost of a litre of petrol is now at its lowest since August 2017, while diesel prices are at the lowest level seen since April 2018.

“2018 felt like a year of unrelenting surges when it came to pump prices, so it’s certainly reassuring for motorists to see prices trending in the opposite direction to start the New Year,” Conor Faughnan, AA Director of Consumer Affairs stated. “However it’s important to remember that we are not seeing this drop as the result of an act of kindness from government or an easing of taxes, but as a result of international factors which are always vulnerable to reversing in the opposite direction at any instance.”

“As with any purchase, the most important thing for those who are trying to cut costs at this time of year is to shop around when buying petrol or diesel and, if you are an AA customer, then

consider using our Fuel Card or App offer to save even more on your fuel. Simply put, it’s always better to be loyal to your own pocket instead of being loyal to any particular garage.”

Crude Oil Drop Main Reason for Change Among the main drivers for the change in pump prices has been a significant reduction in the cost of crude oil.

Having floated between $75 and $85 per barrel for much of 2018, crude oil has largely remained at a cost of between $55 and $65 since December of last year. However, the AA has highlighted that the excessive tax placed on both petrol and diesel means motorists are still paying more than they should be for their fuel.

Currently, the AA estimates that 64.42% of the cost of each litre of petrol sold in Ireland is made up of various taxes. Meanwhile, 57.71% of diesel’s pump price comes from govern-

ment taxation.

“For many people in Ireland, particularly those living in rural areas, the car is their only means of reliable transport and as a result crucial to their ability to get to work and continue to contribute to the Irish economy.

The current levels of taxation only serve to punish these people for the failure of the current governments and their predecessors to improve public transport options across the country,” Faughnan added.

“At the very least, if government persists on maintaining such a high level of taxation, then that money needs to be used wisely and invested in providing people across Ireland with reliable public transport options so that they have legitimate alternatives as opposed to simply forcing them into a corner and punishing them when they try to escape by their sole reliable transport option.”

FUEL EFFICIENT DRIVING TIPS

Accelerate gently—The harder you accelerate, the more fuel you use.

Use your right foot lightly to move off and get up to speed, and you’ll make savings.

Easy on the brakes—Sharp braking wastes energy – instead, ease off the accelerator and move down the gears.

Reduce your speed—Did you know that a vehicle travelling at 120km per hour uses about 20% more fuel than the same vehicle at 100km per hour?

Maintain a steady speed—Constant changes in speed use more fuel and are a waste of energy and money.

Read the road ahead—A little anticipation goes a long way – literally!

By training yourself to look further ahead you can avoid sharp braking and even the need to use the brake

altogether.

Lighten the load—Make sure you aren’t carrying heavy items unnecessarily, for example bags of compost or sports equipment.

Be a smart shifter—Don’t take too long to move into the higher gears – driving fast in a low gear makes the engine work harder and uses more fuel.

Use air conditioning sparingly— You may be surprised to discover that using your car’s air conditioning system can increase its fuel consumption by as much as 20%.

Streamline—Remove roof racks, roof boxes and cycle racks when you aren’t using them.

Ditch the car—Finally, and most obviously, don’t drive unless you need to. Walk or cycle for short trips, and use public transport as much as you can.
