The wife of a man who was killed during last month’s ‘Storm Ophelia’ has written a letter to local representatives to ask for clearer guidelines for employers and the self-employed in the event of a status red weather warning. Pamela Goss wrote to local TDs asking for clarity on the guidelines so that there will not be another incident similar to the one which killed her husband. Fintan Goss was travelling home to Ravensdale on his way back from work on October 16 when a tree fell on top of his vehicle. In the wake of that tragedy Fintan’s widow is looking for answers to a number of questions about what happened on that day. “What are the rules or guidelines for employers in terms of the dangers during a Status Red Weather Warning? What guidance was issued to employers, the self-employed and those working in the public sector about turning up for work on Monday October 16? Continued on Page 2
Leah claims public speaking win
St Vincents student Leah O’Shaughnessy has emerged triumphant from a field of eight regional finalists at the national final of the prestigious European Commission’s Soapbox public speaking competition which took place at the Royal Hospital Kilmainham on Tuesday November 7. Speaking passionately on the topic of Brexit and its implications for Ireland, Leah won over the panel of esteemed adjudicators including Dr Mary Murphy, acclaimed author and lecturer on politics at UCC. All through the Autumn, contestants have been battling the length and breadth of the country, passionately defending or attacking the idea of whether a Brexit could be considered. Full Story On Page 8
