Injured player lay in rain for 80 minutes By Paul Byrne

An U16 player who sustained a head injury during a match in Cooley was left lying on a pitch for 80 minutes in the rain before an ambulance arrived to take him to hospital. Philip Trainor was playing for Ardee St Mary’s U16 away to Cooley U16s when his head accidentally collided with the hip of one of the Cooley players during the game which was played in rainy conditions. The young Ardee man collapsed lying motionless on the wet ground leading to an ambulance being called at 8.41pm when it became apparent how serious the injury was. According to the HSE the delay was due to emergency resources in the area dealing with emergencies elsewhere.

“The National Ambulance Service can confirm an emergency 999/112 call was received for the Cooley area of County Louth on 6th July 2015 at 20:41hrs. At the time the call was received a number of emergency resources in the area were dealing with other emergency calls. “The nearest available emergency resource was a rapid response vehicle with an advanced paramedic on board which was immediately dispatched to the incident and arrived at the scene at 9:41. Kind-hearted Holly has hair cut for charity By Paul Byrne

A kind hearted 11-year-old girl from Dundalk has donated €160 as well as 14 inches of her hair to the Rapunzel Foundation which works to improve the lives of those living with hair loss through diseases such as alopecia and cancer. Holly Savage from Castle Park in Dundalk made the decision to part with her beautiful long locks last month

She travelled to Colorcode Hairdressers in Dundalk last Thursday afternoon nervous but excited to be helping out the Rapunzel Foundation. “I decided about a month ago that I wanted to help the Rapunzel Foundation by giving them some of my hair. My sister told me that they can make wigs for people with cancer so I asked my mam

could I get it cut and she said I could”, explained Holly. “I’ve always had long hair but I didn’t mind getting 14 inches took off because I know it’s for a very good cause. I am really happy to have done it and I like it short now. I was a bit scared at first before it was cut off but I’m really happy now”, added the freshly shorn Holly. Holly’s mother, Donna, said she was very proud of her daughter and hoped that what

Hair is raised through the Rapunzel Foundation’s Ponytail campaign, where people commit to growing their hair 14 inches or longer with the view to their hair being sent to help make much needed wigs to improve the lives of those living with the hair loss. Barry Davis Ryan who drowned in Baltimore, Co. Cork on June 30. The search for the young man following the drowning tragedy which claimed the lives of his father and girl-

friend was intensified on Thursday last with Dundalk Sub Aqua Club members travelling down to Baltimore on Wednesday night to assist. The search was co-ordinated by the West Cork Underwater Search and Rescue Unit with divers bravely challenging the elements day after day in search of the young man’s body. His remains were located on the seabed in 24m of water, close to where the accident happened on Friday afternoon. This had been one of the last dives planned as the weather was closing

in and weather warnings would have restricted any further diving. The recovery of the body brought comfort and a sense of closure for the family who were very appreciate of the huge efforts of all the volunteers. According to Margaret McCarthy, PRO, for Dundalk’s Sub Aqua Club the divers deserve huge praise for finding the body given the challenges that they faced over the ten days searching for Barry’s body. “The underwater terrain in the area made for a very difficult search. Effectively it was a natural maze of gullies

and crevices covered in a carpet of kelp. Each gully had to be searched while trying to maintain an effective line in only 2m visibility. “The terrain meant that it was necessary to put additional teams into areas already dived as it was impossible to say any area was completely covered”, explained Margaret. “The Sub Aqua teams around the country are like a mini community and are always available to help each other out in times of trouble. The more dive teams placed into the area in a controlled manner increased the odds of a

successful search. We just needed a diver to turn into the right crevice at the right time and thankfully this is exactly what happened. “Search sites are an unusual place. There is a common purpose and drive among all concerned, organisers, divers, boat coxswains, and those vital support people providing refreshments and other help. Success is the recovery and bringing home of somebody’s loved one. “When it happens there is a release of pent up emotions. Elation and sadness in one thought”, noted Margaret. Denise

Teen out of control during crime spree A 16-YEAR-OLD boy who was described as being ‘effectively loose and out of control’ when he went on a crime spree was sentenced to four months at Dundalk District Court. The court heard that on January 1 this year, the defendant broke into a room in the Fairways Hotel, taking a bottle of vodka and iPhone with a total value of €620. On May 9 he stole a bottle of wine and vodka, with a combined value of €30, from Dunnes

Stores, Ard Easmuinn, and on May 16 he was seen going into St Louis Secondary School and apprehended. On June 1, this year, a car on the Rock Road narrowly missed road users and was later abandoned. The defendant, who was a passenger, was one of two people later arrested. A total of €1,000 damage was caused to the car. Solictior, Frank McDonnell, stated that his client was effectively

loose and out of control at the time but had surrendered himself to Gardai and spent the weekend in custody. A report highlighted issues of drug abuse but Mr McDonnell stated that he was seeking a chance to get help. The defendant was sentenced to concurrent four months in respect of each charge of burglary, theft, entering a building with intent to commit an offence, criminal damage and unauthorised carriage.

The Dundalk branch of the Irish Red Cross are holding a table quiz in aid of Dundalk Red Cross Cadets in McGeough’s Bar and Restaurant in Roden Place July 17 at 8pm. Neighbours involved in ongoing dispute A man who was involved in an on-going dispute with a neighbour apologised for his behaviour and stated that the man has nothing to worry about. On December 21, 2014, Konstantin Scigelskij of Glenwood, Dublin Rd, Dundalk, became involved in a heated argument with his neighbour, Mr Copas, which was followed by some pushing.

The defendant then punched the windscreen of his neighbour’s car causing damage estimated at €210. He was charged with criminal damage and assault as a result of the incident. Solicitor, Michelle Murphy, stated that the neighbours had fallen out over a trivial matter, which had escalated. They both had previously made complaints about each other but

that had stopped since this incident. She pointed out that other neighbours think highly of both men and that the defendant didn’t want to leave the area. Ms Murphy revealed that mediation had been suggested but the injured party, as was his right, had declined. Mr Scigelskij stated that he has nothing against Mr Copas and he has nothing to worry

about as this won’t happen again. Following a short adjournment, full compensation of €210 was paid. Judge Flann Brennan stated that he couldn’t ignore the fact that there was a history between the two men and imposed a three month sentence, suspended for three months. He also imposed a €150 fine on the criminal damage charge.

Steps are being taken to clamp down on fuel laundering after it was revealed that a mobile testing unit has been in operation since April. The move, which targets petrol stretching, has been welcomed by Fine Gael TD, Peter Fitzpatrick. “Since April, mobile testing equipment that allows for on the spot analysis of a sample has been in operation. This is a major development in tackling petrol stretching which has become a significant problem, and which is not only damaging vehicles, but is severely impacting on legitimate businesses”, explained Mr Fitzpatrick. “In February of this year, the British-Irish Parliamentary Assembly published their report on fuel laundering. This report found that while fuel laundering remains a huge problem, particularly in border counties like Louth, co-operation between the police forces, North and South, is excellent. “Fuel fraud is a criminal activity and it poses a serious threat to businesses, motorists and Exchequer revenues. It is intolerable that 17 years after the first peace agreement, we have certain crime overlords and drug smugglers openly flouting the law”, he continued. “I know that the Government is pursuing these matters with our counterparts in the North and the new mobile testing lab is one such action which I am confident, will make a difference in tackling petrol stretching. “The Minister for Finance, Michael Noonan, has also put in place legislative provisions to underpin these important initiatives. “Since 2011, 31 oil laundries have been detected and closed down, more than 3 million litres of fuel have been seized and 139 filling stations were closed for trading without a licence of breach of licence provisions. However we know a lot of fuel smugglers have gone undetected and that the practise remains rife. “Ongoing discussion at the level of the British-Irish Ministerial Council will continue and our Government will continue to implement provisions to tackle these issues. The mobile testing lab is an important development but more progress is needed”, the local TD concluded.

Duck race posponed due to Sub Aqua Search The duck race in aid of SOSAD was postponed on Sunday last due to Dundalk Sub Aqua Search and Rescue being involved in a search off the Cork Coast. The local group were called in to assist in the search for the remains of Barry Davis Ryan, who was one of three people to drown off Baltimore two weeks ago. As a result, the organisers of the duck race decided to postpone their event as they were unable to proceed without the help of Dundalk Sub Aqua. A new date has yet to be finalised for the event, which raises much needed funds for SOSAD and is sponsored by Black & White Living. Tickets remain on sale for the race which has prizes of €500, €300 and €200 for owners of first, second and third. Man given chance to avoid return to prison A man who stole items from a supermarket was given the chance to avoid a return to jail when he appeared at Dundalk District Court. Joe Bailey of 14 Grange Close, Muirhevnamor, Dundalk, admitted stealing a razor, two candles and deodorant from Tesco Extra on May 21 this year. The property was recovered. European darts glory for Mark Connolly A PROMISING local darts player is celebrating a magnificent acheivement after helping the Irish Youth team to claim victory in the European Youth Darts Competition in Denmark. Fifteen-year-old Mark Connolly from Blackrock was one of the leading lights in a team of four that took on the best in Europe and came out on top with a deserved victory, while he also claimed a silver medal in the doubles event. The event was held in Vingsted in Denmark where Mark was joined by Conor Heneghan (Mayo) Ronan McDonagh (Sligo) and Dean Finn (Waterford ) . Mark was full of confidence going into the event after beating some very strong local talent in the Premier Singles in the Dundalk and District Darts League. He also was throwing well with Trainors Bar in Camlough and has done very well in the INDO Ranking competitions this year.

The first day of competition saw Mark and Conor team up and play in the Pairs competition , they defeated teams from Gibraltar, England, The Netherlands and Sweden before they made their way to the quarter-finals where they defeated a very talented doubles partnership from Turkey, to secure at least bronze. This win would guarantee the winners Bronze medal positions and semi final against England. The Fighting Irish came out on top with a three nil win. The semi final was a tense affair with the English team going One up before the Mayo man in this duo finished the next leg to restore parity. Mark finished under pressure to take the lead in the third game against the throw. This was right

to the wire in the end before the Irish pair crossed the line first to guarantee a place in the final. Unfortunately, the team were unable to get past a very strong Dutch pairing but a silver medal was a great reward for their efforts. Although the singles competition didn’t go well for the Irish team, they were in top form going into the team event. Ireland defeated Sweden in the first game and although they lost to Germany, a quarter-final place was secured with victory over Turkey. Mark helped his team score win over Denmark and went on to beat England to set up a meeting with the Netherlands in the final. This proved to be a great battle between the teams and a great start by Ireland saw them lead by 7-3, before the Dutch won five in a row. However, Ireland fought back to win 9-8 and secure the European title. Throughout the competition the games won by every team in all com-

petitions were totalled and the overall winner of the Europe Cup was to be decided. For the first time ever it was a dead heat and the Irish and the Dutch share the title.

Dundalk at Gothia Cup DUNDALK Schoolboys League under 16 are Ireland’s sole representatives at this year’s Gothia Cup in Gothenburg, Sweden. This was the seventh time a team from Dundalk entered the Gothia Cup now known as the World Youth Cup which is the biggest youth tournament in the world. The tournament which is growing bigger and bigger each year will feature 1,755 teams from 75 nations which is over 100 teams more than last year’s record figures. The Dundalk team had the prestigious honour of representing Ireland and carrying the

Irish flag into the opening ceremony last Monday evening in front of 55,000 spectators at the Ullevi Stadium in Gothenburg where Pele made his World Cup debut for Brazil in 1958. Dundalk sent over an under 16 team who were drawn in Group 15 alongside New York Utd (USA), Ivybridge Community College (England) and Torslanda IK (Sweden). Speaking before Dundalk’s second game against Ivy Community College Dundalk coach Brian McGuinness spoke of his disappointment after losing their opening match against New York.

Team Torres returns home with 19 medals Team Torres were in top form as a crew of 15 competitors descended on The Summer SmackDown Submission Only competition in Dublin. The team was well represented with teenagers, adults, males and females and they demonstrated why they are considered one of the top teams in Ireland when they dominated the vast majority of weight and class categories they entered in both the GI and NoGI events. All told they managed to take

away an impressive return of 11 Gold, four Silver and four Bronze in categories that were stacked with many of the best competitors on the Irish scene. According to Cormac O’Hanlon, head of Dundalk BJJ, it was a great reward for the efforts put in by all competitors. “Some competitors had as many as nine fights on the day with each fight lasting five minutes of fast paced action which is a testimony to the hard work and dedication of the members of our

competition team. “Only a small portion of those who train with Team Torres participate in competition with the vast majority training for self defence and for the physical and mental benefits that arise from training in BJJ, however all members of the Team Torres family share in the competition teams accomplishments as without the help of all members of the Team Torres family we would not be so successful on the competition circuit, added Cormac.

We were about an hour waiting before an emergency paramedic arrived to assess Philip and about 20 minutes more for an ambulance to arrive and take him to the Lourdes in Drogheda. It was a relief when it did finally come. I think the ambulance actually came from Monaghan in the end as the one that was coming from Drogheda was called to an emergency in the meantime”, he explained. David spoke of his relief when the ambulance service finally did arrive and thanked them for helping to stabilise Philip and take him to hospital. “I know the ambulance crew are under severe pressure and they’re doing the best they can. They were great when they arrived and it was a

relief to see them helping Philip as he lay on the pitch. Thankfully he was conscious the whole way through and when he was brought to hospital he was given the all clear after a number of tests were carried out. Local Sinn Fein councillor Tomás Sharkey was pleased to hear of Philip’s recovery but insisted that this incident once again highlights the problems we have in the health service. “This is yet another example of the extent to which our health system is broken. It’s a disgrace that a young boy with a head injury was forced to lie on a pitch in Cooley for an hour and 20 minutes before an ambulance arrived to take him to hospital. This is down to a complete lack of resources. Fine Gael promised they would improve our health system but time and time again we have seen evidence that is still as bad as ever. As usual it’s going to take a very serious injury or even a death before something is done to fix our broken health system”, warned Tomás.

All the focus is on the sick child of course, but there is a need to support parents and the rest of the children who may not understand what is happening to their brother or sister. The key element of the charity is to provide practical support and to help the family in the most practical way for their personal requirements which may vary greatly from family to family. Last year the festival raised €14,500.

Struck wife in row over cigarettes A man who struck his wife following an argument over cigarettes and became abusive to Garda when they called to his home, escaped a conviction when he appeared at Dundalk District Court. Richard Wykes of 52 O’Hanlon Park, Dundalk, was told by Judge Flann Brennan to keep the peace in future as he would not be give a second. The court heard that on July 27 last year, Gardai were called to O’Hanlon Park where they found Maria Wykes, who had a swollen eye, outside her house. Abused Gardai during pub disturbance A man who became abusive towards Gardai who were investigating an incident in a public house was fined €200 when he admitted the offence at Dundalk District Court. Colin Lynch of Heynestown, Dundalk, apologised for his behaviour on May 9 this year. Insp Martin Beggy stated that on that date, Gardai were called to a public house on the Dublin Road where they were advised of an altercation. After viewing

CCTV, the Gardai spoke to the defendant who was trying to leave by the back door. He initially refused to give his name and address, although he subsequently did so. The Gardai had issues trying to restrain him and after being arrested he had an altercation with one of the officers and ended up on the ground. He obstructed Gardai and was very insulting towards them and refused to co-operate until he later calmed down.

Solicitor, Conor Mac Guill, stated that he was involved in an incident along with others, which was not helped by the consumption of alcohol. He accepts whole-heartedly and embarrassingly that Gardai are entitled to make enquiries and carry out their duties. He apologised for his actions. The solicitor added that the 30-year-old unemployed man lives at home and that his previous conviction dates back ten years.

On Saturday, Dundalk travelled down to Laois CC for the quarter finals of the Dick O’Neill Cup. Despite the adverse weather conditions, Dundalk managed to see off the midlands outfit with a great all round performance by all. Having lost the toss, Dundalk were sent in to field first, with the rain getting steadily heavier. Opening bowlers Andy Williams and Zaheer Babar began brightly and wickets fell early for Laois, Waleed Shahid and captain

Jiwan Jodhani taking the catches. Ian Chong swept up the tail-end, combining twice with Babar for two superb catches. After their allotted overs, Laois finished all out for 168. After the interval, Michael Mullen and Sanjay Kumar began Dundalk’s chase and set the foundations for the win with a solid opening partnership. The game was balanced on a knife-edge, but experienced batsmen Williams and Sajan Jeyaseelan saw Dundalk

over the line with a huge 122 run partnership, making 54 and 67 not out respectively, finishing with a comfortable 10 overs remaining. One of the most memorable aspects of the day was the father-son pairing of Ian and Daniel Chong. Daniel is a wonderful example to all in the game, having come through the youths’ system to make his senior debut at the age of just 13 years old. National Library launches parish records online project Tracing your family roots in Co. Louth has just got a little bit easier thanks to last weeks launch of a new online repository of parish records, which date as far back to the 1740s. The parish registers website has been put together by the National Library of Ireland and is the result of years of painstaking work which involved creating more than 370,000 high quality digital images of microfilm reels which have been designed to be fully responsive, working across mobile, tablet and desktop devices. The parish registers typically include information such as dates of baptisms and marriages, and the names of key people involved, such as wit-

nesses or godparents with the whole process taking almost three years to complete. Ciara Kerrigan who managed the painstaking operation said it’s holding of parish records is considered to be “the single most important source of information on Irish family history prior to the 1901 Census”. “We have received a hugely enthusiastic response from people worldwide with an interest in Irish family history”, she explained. People around Co. Louth can go online to www.nli.ie and simply type in the parish in which their ancestors came from and search through the documents which contain baptismal and marriage

records which date from the 1740’s up to the 1880’s. In total the documents contain information from over a thousand parishes all around the country. Previously if people wanted to look at these records they would have had to travel to Dublin but now they can track their ancestors from their comfort of their own homes thanks to the online database. Cyclists around Dundalk could potentially face fines of up to €2000 under a new system of on the spot fines which are to be introduced at the beginning of August. The new system will see €40 fines handed out to cyclists who fall foul of any of the seven cycling offences which have been initially drafted by the Department of Transport. It is expected that more offences will be added in time to this list. The fining system will be issued similarly to the

motoring fixed charge notice and penalty point system with cyclists receiving a fixed charge notice in the post at the address they supply to the Garda member that detects them committing the offence. They will then be given 26 days to pay the €40 fine and if they do so the matter will be considered closed. However, failure to pay will see the fine increase to €60 with the offender given 56 days to sort out the matter. If the fine remains unpaid, a summons will be issued and the matter dealt with by the courts where the cyclist can be ordered to pay

anything up to €2000. Cllr Mark Dearey, a keen cyclist, cautiously welcomed the new system but noted that the correct infrastructure needs to be in place for cyclists if they are to stay safe while obeying the new laws. “I have said before that cyclists should be fined for cycling on footpaths but I also recognise the fact that the footpath is the only safe and sane place to be as you move out of the town centre. “If fines are going to be issued to cyclists on footpaths we have to ensure the alternative to cycling

on a footpath is safe at all times”, explained Cllr Dearey. “I suppose in a curious kind of way these new fines will recognise cycling as a serious form of transport and put us on the same level as motorists. It’s important road users recognise good cycling behaviour and I hope that these new on the spot fines will in turn improve the standard of cycling around the country”, noted Cllr Dearey. Offences now the subject of €40 fines are: 1.—Cyclist driving a pedal cycle without reasonable consideration.

Annagassan Historical Society Walk On Sunday The Annagassan and District Historical Society will hold its next history walk on Sunday July 19 at 2:30pm sharp. The history walk, which covers about 2.5km, visits the following areas of historical interest: Rathdrumin Ringfort, one of the most impressive and best preserved in Co. Louth Rathdrumin church and rectory, from where in 1847 the Reverend R.H. Long gave an account of the local conditions during the famine Carrickbaggot House, an Irish Longhouse on a site that dates back to medieval period Carrickbaggot mass rock dating from penal times and the medieval church Please assemble at Rathdrumin church yard. This may be reached by driving straight through Grangebellew cross coming from the Dunleer side. Turn right at the T-junction which is 200 metres beyond the cross. The church is 100 metres down this road on the left. Wear walking boots or strong footwear as some of the walk is cross-country. The organisers will provide refreshments during the walk, which costs €5 (children are free). All are welcome.

Budding young architects in primary schools across Louth and beyond are being invited by Dundalk-based banana importers Fyffes to demonstrate their talent in a way that could provide extra accommodation for their school. With their introduction of Go Bananas, a new free educational healthy eating app for tablets and iPads, children aged 7 to 10 are asked to take part in a competition that invites them to submit ideas that would provide useful school

space with the winning work being brought to life in a shipping container, remodelled and fitted out to the student’s design and installed at his or her school according to its requirements. Boher Church celebrates 150 years The Church of our Lady Star of the Sea in the Cooley Peninsula celebrates its 150th anniversary shortly. While it was originally called St. Mary’s Church, it will always be synonymous with the area in which it stands which is Boher. The celebrations will start on Friday July 15 with the opening of the Flower Festival, followed by Mass at 8pm. Saturday will feature a pro-

cession from St James’ Well at 4pm followed by a Healing Mass. There will be a setdancing workshop at 7pm and a Ceili at 9pm. Archbishop Eamon Martin will celebrate Mass on Sunday followed by Blessing of Graves. A parish barbecue takes place at 12.30pm and will conclude at 9pm with the Nathan Carter concert in aid of The Maria Gorretti Foundation.

Man threatened to turn loaded revolver on himself A man who threatened to turn a loaded revolver on himself was given a 12-month suspended sentence at Dundalk District Court and told to stay clear of drugs and alcohol in an effort to continue making progress. The case of Mantas Bielskis of 26 Riverside Drive, Dundalk, had been heard on January 14 with sentencing put back for the production of a Probation Report. He had been charged with two counts of unauthorised possession of firearms/ammunition as a result of the incident on May 7 last year. Insp Martin Beggy stated dur-

ing the hearing of the case that as a result of the concerns of family members, Garda attended the house and found the defendant with a loaded revolver and ammunition. The gun was not used but he was making indications that he was going to use it on himself. It was not used in an approach to anyone else. The defence barrister stated that as a result of the intervention of the defendant’s parents, and their continued support, Mr Bielskis has seen his situation improve. He asked that he be allowed to con-

tinue on that path to progress. Judge Flann Brennan imposed a 12-month sentence, suspended for 12 months and placed him on Probation. He told him not to take illegal drugs or abuse alcohol, while continuing with mental health treatment. “It is clear to me that only if he does this will he managed to avoid trouble. It is clear that having seen the medical reports and his treatment history and medication that is needed, that Mr Bielskis cannot take alcohol or any other drugs because this will lead to problems”, stated the judge.
