The man who oversaw the appointment of Ireland’s greatest manager Jack Charlton has paid tribute to the popular Geordie who passed away last weekend aged 85.

Des, a former Vice President of UEFA, described Jack as ‘a great personality and a very straight up kind of guy’ while sending sympathies to his wife Pat and family.

Dundalk man Des Casey was President of the FAI between 1984 and 1986 and with Irish football at its lowest ebb at the end of 1985 after a disastrous World Cup qualifying campaign a new manager was needed following Eoin Hand’s dismissal.

Des travelled to Manchester airport with Dr Tony O’Neill to interview Charlton who had recently resigned from managing hometown club Newcastle Utd. Continued on Page 2

Aaron Brady denies killing Det. Garda Adrian Donohoe A 28-year-old man accused of the murder of Det. Garda Adrian Donohoe at the Lordship Credit Union seven years ago told the Central Criminal Court on Monday morning that he did not kill him.

Detective Garda Adrian Donohoe was shot dead while on duty at the Lordship Credit Union in Bellurgan on 25 January 2013.

He also denied a second charge of robbing €7,000 in cash and cheques on the same date and at the same location. The case continues this week in the Central Criminal Court.

“I was very sad to hear of Jack’s passing last weekend,” stated Des. “He was without doubt our greatest manager and he was a great personality and loved by Irish fans all over the country. Meanwhile, Gardaí in Dundalk who arrested four men on Monday morning (13th July) in connection with the arson attack at Clontygora Court, Dundalk at a residence in the early hours of Sunday, 5th July have released two of the men without charge and a file will be prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions.

Two men remain in Garda custody and have been charged in relation to separate matters and were due to appear before Dundalk District Court, yesterday morning, Tuesday 14th July.

Five people escaped the burning house including a young child and her pregnant mother.

None of the injured party obtained any life threatening injuries.

Show must go on for local musicians

Members of Scale Force refused to let lockdown end their weekly music sessions

A GROUP of local traditional musicians have played live together in Conradh na Gaeilge Dundalk for the first time since lockdown.

Fiddle player Olive Murphy from Farndreg used to take part in a Scale Force trad session every Wednesday night in Byrne’s Bar on Hillstreet, Dundalk.

“The group was set up six years ago by myself and my friend Jean Nash - for adults who played as children and took it back up again,” said Olive.

“During the lockdown we still

played together every week using Zoom and never missed a session.”

“We had about 16 people sitting at home playing with me. Some sent in requests of what sets of tunes they wanted played.

“We recorded each session and put it on our Facebook page. This was really great.

“We had friends in California, Frank and Mary McLoughlin, and Mary White in Canada that would normally be back in Ireland at this time but due to restrictions couldn’t travel. They said it was just like a life line home.”

Leanne delighted with exhibition An Táin Arts Centre current off-site exhibition has been very warmly received with many flocking to social media to praise the initiative. ‘This Time, These Days’ is a series of new drawings by local artist Leanne Mullene inspired by the Covid19 lockdown telling a story of how these strange times have changed us.

Leanne has previously been shortlisted and highly commended at the 2017 Hennessy Portrait Prize as well as reaching the semi-finals of the Sky Arts Portrait Artist of the Year competition in 2018. According to Leanne her latest exhibition which is inspired by the lockdown came together quite quickly after she had been approached by An Táin Arts Centre.

“When lockdown happened I was drawing quite a lot and I just began asking lots of friends and family how they were coping and how they were adjusting to the big changes in everyday life. People began to tell me their stories and I heard from people who were co-

sis of what is displayed in the exhibition,” explains Leanne.

“An Táin Arts Centre got in touch with me and

asked what I was up to and when I told them they got behind me and got the wheels in motion for an exhibition. The

Arts Council funded the project which was great and we decided to display the drawings in shop fronts on Clanbrassil Street. From that point on it became a lovely culmination of people and groups to ensure the project came together.

“I have to give huge thanks and praise to Paul Hayes at An Táin Arts Centre, Ronan Halpin for letting us use his shop windows on Clanbrassil Street, Martin and Sinead in Bids and last but not least I want to give a special thanks for my son Doire Mullen for all his help.

Thankfully the reaction so far has been hugely positive and I’m getting lots of lovely comments through my Instagram page.

“I have always liked site specific work right back to when I was younger doing street drawing. I think that art should be accessible and to have it this exhibition in such a public place was a huge plus for me and something I think we could maybe do more of in the future,” stated Leanne.

Gardaí are seeking help in finding a 22-year-old woman missing from County Louth.

Mariana Rezmuves was last seen on Sunday, July 5 in Dundalk.

She is described as being 5 foot 6

Famine Graveyard

Dundalk Famine Graveyard Association is planning to hold its Annual Service of Remembrance at Dundalk Famine Graveyard on Sunday, August 9.

The service is due to take place at 5pm. According to the Association “some dignity should be shown to these victims of the Great Famine by erecting a modest and appropriate memorial on site”. The graveyard was opened in 1850. It is understood there are over 4,000 people buried in the cemetery.

Ó Murchú unveiled as party spokesperson on communications L r

Dundalk Sinn Féin TD Ruairí Ó Murchú has been unveiled as the party’s spokesperson on communications and broadband.

Sinn Féin president Mary Lou McDonald included the first-time TD in her announcement of a further 11 spokespersons positions on Tuesday.

The Louth TD, who has a masters in computer science, said he was honoured to have been selected for the role and was looking forward to getting started.

Mr Ó Murchú will work alongside Meath East TD Darren O’Rourke, shadowing Minister Eamon Ryan at the Department of Climate Action, Communications, Networks and Transport.

The Dundalk deputy said: ‘I am honoured to have been selected for this position.

Everyone in Louth, and indeed across the State, knows what a joke broadband is in swathes of rural Ireland.

‘The Covid-19 pandemic has cemented the fact that broadband is essential to the

everyday lives of people in every walk of life.

‘We know that remote working will be a far bigger part of the lives of workers in the coming months and years. We need to see more employees working from home, or in their local towns – meaning less traffic on the roads and more time with their families.

‘But because of the omnishambles that has been the National Broadband Plan, under Fine Gael, many rural businesses will not see high

speed broadband any time soon.

‘Sinn Féin has proposed the establishment of digital hubs in rural towns, replicating the success of the Ludgate Hub in Skibbereen.

The Ireland Strategic Investment Fund should partner with others to invest €1 billion over a decade regenerating town centres, including the creation of broadband hubs with work spaces for local businesses, and this is something that I want to work towards’.

Local Girl Guide climbs Ben Nevis … virtually!

A local member of Irish Girl Guides (IGG) has successfully completed a virtual summit of Ben Nevis.

Emily Halpenny (14) ran up and down the stairs of her Dunleer home 470 times in order to complete the virtual ascent of Ben Nevis the highest mountain in the UK, which stands at 1,345 metres.

Emily, who is a member of Monasterboice Senior Branch (Senior Branch is the IGG branch for 14-30 year olds), was one of several Senior Branchers to successfully complete the challenge during Camp Echo.

Emily, who is a pupil at Scoil Uí Mhuirí, said that going for a run every evening since the start of lockdown had helped her maintain a certain level of fitness

Emily Halpenny and meant she had built up the necessary stamina to complete the challenge. “While hiking up and down the stairs, I concentrated on counting the number of flights that I had climbed,” she said. “I knew that, if I lost concentration, I would lose count.

“I knew that I had to climb 470 floors and roughly to take 6,725 steps, so I counted the floors myself while my watch counted my

steps. Believe it or not, I actually found coming down the stairs harder than going up, even though I had previously thought that it would be the opposite!”

Emily took regular breaks - every 25 floors or so - and made sure to drink plenty of water.

It took her three hours to complete. “Once I had finished, I was very tired,” she said. “My face was the colour of beetroot and my legs were aching, but I had a sense of achievement as I knew that I had successfully completed the challenge.

“I enjoyed all of the challenges and it felt just like a proper camp, minus the tents,” said Emily. “Even though we were all apart, it really felt like we were all together, thanks to the regular Zoom calls. I

Over 300 people homeless in Louth Over 300 people presented as homeless to Louth County Council in May, according to information provided by the local authority.

Of the 301 people who presented as homeless, 139 were from Dundalk, two were from Ardee and 160 were from Drogheda.

Overall, 271 were offered advice, support, and fast tracking H.A. for rent supplement eligibility.

Eight people from Dundalk were placed in temporary emergency accommodation. Two locals refused the offer of temporary emergency accommodation.

Homeless numbers in the North East Region from May 25-31 stood at 119, according to monthly returns submitted by the Department of Housing.

Of this figure 75 were male and 44 were female. The majority (65) were in the 25-44 age category.

As a direct response to the risk of communal spread of the Covid-19 virus amongst vulnerable individuals in Homeless Hostels, the council has opened up a number of void properties and temporarily decanted individuals and families from hostel accommodation into these units.

The Sinn Féin TD also has responsibility for communications, which covers the postal service, cyber security and cyber safety.

He said: ‘We have seen enormous benefits in terms of education and communication heralded by digital technology, but there are many dangers.

‘We are committed to the creation of an Office of a Digital Safety Commissioner and roll-out of a National Strategy on Children’s Cyber Safety’.

Emily, who joined IGG when she was five, said she had enjoyed helping out with younger IGG girls prior to lockdown as it gave her an opportunity to give back to her unit, which she said had helped her so much over the years.

“During my time in

IGG I have learned so much,” she said. “I have learned so many valuable life-skills, like first aid, teamwork, leadership and outdoor skills.

Emily said she looked forward to IGG meetings resuming in the autumn and that she would definitely recommend other girls and young women to get involved too. “Guiding has given me so many amazing opportunities and I’ve had a lot of fun along the way,” she said.

Independent TD Peter Fitzpatrick has hit out at the €250 charge requested by private hospitals prior to seeing patients. Speaking in the Dáil last Wednesday Deputy Fitzpatrick asked Taoiseach Micheál Martin to intervene and ‘sort it out once and for all’.

“Patients using private hospitals are now facing a fee for Covid-19 testing before they go for a

procedure. These are the hospitals that got millions of euro in taxpayers’ money during the pandemic,” explained Deputy Fitzpatrick.

“I got a telephone call this morning from a constituent whose daughter has cancer and has to go to one of these hospitals regularly. She has been told that at every visit, whether for a check-up or chemotherapy, she

Downloading Covid Tracking App is Essential—McGahon Fine Gael Senator John McGahon has urged people in County Louth to download the Covid tracking App to help confront the challenge of the coronavirus.

Speaking on the launch of the tracking app, Senator McGahon said “ To help the Country through this crisis the Covid response app has three functions, contact tracing, symptom tracking and news and information.

In terms of Contact Tracing, the app records if users are in close contact with another app user. If an App user tests positive for Covid-19 the app will alert other app users that have been closer than 2 metres for more than 15 minutes.

In terms of Symptom Tracking, there is a Daily Health check in where users can help slow the spread of COVID-19 by telling the HSE how they are feeling every day. If users do have symptoms, then the app will give them advice on what to do.

Louth Vintners chief asks for rates moratorium extension

Chairwoman of Louth Vintner’s Federation of Ireland, Collette Nugent, has called on Louth County Council to extend the moratorium on business rates until the end of the year.

“We would like to get a moratorium until the social distancing guidelines are lifted, but realistically we would like it extended until the end of the trading year,” said Collette.

She added that if people are flouting public health regulations, members of the public need to take responsibility to follow the rules.

“We can’t all be lambasted for one or two rogue publicans. It’s a different way of trading,” said Collette.

“We have to stop giving out about what others are doing and do our job to the best of our ability.

“We have the guidelines.

Local community groups are set to benefit from the Dundalk Municipal Budget allocating its members community grants. The following organisations were proposed as recipients of the members community grant: St Patrick’s Scout Group was nominated to receive a proposed €1,750 and Glenmore AC in Cooley was nominated for €500.

Pupils in Faughart CNS successful in Tráth na gCeist competition

Pupils in Faughart CNS worked diligently from home throughout lockdown. During June, pupils from 3rd to 6th participated in the Cumann na mBunscol Lú Tráth na gCeist online and in their art competition and we had 4 prize winners in the school who were thrilled to receive Gaelic footballs in the post recently.

Cllr Maria Doyle is hoping Louth County Council will keep the lines of communication open with Lis na Dara residents opposed to a planned through way in the large Dundalk estate.

“An oral hearing was held in the Crowne Plaza Hotel a few months ago. It looked at the compulsory purchase orders,” said Cllr Doyle.

“People in Lis na Dara and a lot of Mount Avenue residents are affected by the planning permission granted in 2007.

“Overall, the arguments still stand. This road will become a primary route. This was not intended for its original purpose,” she said.

“Louth County Council has been allocated €3.3m in funding for this project.

The primary route shouldn’t be built until the Western bypass has been built.

“Planning permission for this project was granted 13 years ago. A lot of houses in Lis na Dara had not yet been built.

“When you move into an estate you never

envisage a main road being built through it.

People imagine being able to let their kids outside to play on the green.”

She added: “We accept that planning was granted in 2007 but I’d love the council to go back to the drawing board.

“The council has €3.3m in funding but the project will cost a lot more. They have to negotiate with landowners and they need enough funding to make the road safe.

“Lis na Dara looked like a cul de sac and appeared as if it was designed as a standalone estate. The council has engaged with us. It has met with residents several times and I hope that will continue.”

“The Birches” Alzheimer Day Centre say thank-you

“The Birches” Alzheimer Day Centre on the Priorland Road recently celebrated their twentieth anniversary and to mark the auspicious occassion branch members have sent out a thank you letter to the people of North Louth for their suport and kindness down through the years.

Mary Gaughran from the Birches put pen to paper recently to write a letter on behalf of all Birches branch members thanking the people of North County Louth for their support.

“A Chairde, “Words are really inadequate to try and express our deepest appreciation and heartfelt thanks to all of you -the exceptional people of North Louth who have supported us over the past 20 years. The story of “The Birches” began in a sitting room in the Redemptorist Monastery where a group of people met to support each other as they cared for their loved ones with dementia.

From within that group a very unique lady -Kitty Soraghan formed the North Louth Branch of The Alzheimer Society of Ireland and undaunted succeeded in getting a group of fundraisers to build a day centre for

those suffering from Alzheimer’s disease.

“It was with great joy that those very determined and dedicated voluntary group saw their dream come true when on June 1st 2000 Minister Dermot Ahern opened “The Birches” Alzheimer Day Centre. Our Nurse Manager Olive Joyce commenced the 18th June and prepared the centre for our first Club Members on July 2nd 2000. Little did any one of us think that 20 years later we would still be here helping and caring for those who cannot remember. YOU the wonderful people of North Louth built “The Birches” and you have sustained and supported us throughout those 20 years with extraordinary generosity. “The Birches” is a credit to our local community -a community supporting its own community and it is a great tribute to everyone who inspired us to keep going over the 20 years despite many bumps on the road.

“As we travel down memory lane we remember the many people we met and friends we made as funds were raised. For all who donated and fundraised in any way we owe you a deep debt of gratitude. It is important

“Over the years we have renovated and upgraded “The Birches” and the gardens. The Christmas Cooley Market is an amazing event and each year we enjoy meeting up with Father Malachy and all the wonderful Cooley com-

munity.

“We have had and continue to have unbelievable support from Mary Deery and her groups in the council and from the HSE past and present who from day one gave us their support and encouragement. We work in great harmony with Louth Age Action, The DKIT, the Memory Café and the many agencies and services which have expanded over the years. We remember our local businesses who have donated much needed funds and sponsored events supporting us with their ongoing kindness. We were blessed to have the input

from our local politicians and councillors but especially Peter Fitzpatrick and Fergus O Dowd who stood with us and opened the necessary doors to enable us continue our journey.

“Music is the backbone of our centre and Musical Groups and singers gladly give of their time to ensure joy reigns supreme in our beloved Club Members day with Art and alternative therapies also being an important part of their lives. Our Club Members have been blessed to have the Redemptorists as our friends and our very special Chaplain Father Padraig gives them love

and spiritual comfort on a very regular basis. Dom Mark -Ephrem the Abbot of the Holy Cross Benedictine Abbey in Rostrevor has befriended our Club Members and they have found peace and friendship on their visits to the Abbey.

“WE remember all of our dear friends who were instrumental in the early years guiding and supporting the branch as officers and members who now watch over and guide us from their heavenly home. To the many who willingly gave and give of their expertise and time as branch officers and members our deepest gratitude.

It is a great relief to see the many new faces under the baton of Gerry Murphy our Chairperson around the table at our branch meetings who are willing to travel the road into the future to ensure our very dearly loved “Birches “will continue to give care for your loved ones in the community.

Still sitting with comfort at the present branch table are the Stallworth’s Brian Murphy and Sean Lawless- two of the original fundraisers watching over and befriending all of us with their solid wisdom. Brian and Sean keep in touch with the inspi-

rational and original fundraising friends ensuring that their wonderful contribution to “The Birches “is not forgotten.

“WE have been blessed over the 20 years with our Nurse Manager Olive and her excellent staff of carers who give and have given unconditional love to each Club member and their families over the 20 years. They are the “The Birches” and we all become part of that family once you enter the building and remain so until you decide to leave. We hope they all know how appreciated they are by us the branch members and by you the community. Our door remains open and the light still shines brightly to provide a place of welcome for all those amongst us facing the challenges of dementia.

Dundalk Golf Club Notes

TEN years on, almost to the week, from the biggest disappointment of his football career, former Louth Senior footballer Aaron Hoey got his hands on silverware when he won the Arkew Cup at Dundalk Golf Club.

Because of the COVID-19 lockdown and the subsequent phased return to golf, this was the first men’s competition of the season and it was played over two days attracting an entry of 264 players.

While very few golfers managed to get around dry over the two days, those playing on Sunday faced the toughest conditions and Hoey, who played on Saturday, took full advantage as he carded an excellent round of 41pts to beat Tom Dunne (11) on countback.

Hoey opened with a three point par on the first and then played steady golf over the next five holes as he picked up two points each following three pars and two bogies. He then parred the seventh and eighth for three points on each before finishing the front nine with a two point par on the par three ninth.

That saw him turn on 21pts and after a two point par at the 10th he had his first double bogey of the day when he took a six at the index two 11th. He recovered with a par five on the 12th but recorded another double bogey at the par three 13th where he had a five.

Memories of Croke Park in 2010 might have been justified at that stage as the wheels looked to be coming off for the Knockbridge man. But, no doubt drawing on all his sporting experiences, Hoey dug deep and responded magnificently over the final five holes which he covered in 13pts.

After a two point par four at the short 14th, Hoey parred the difficult 15th for three points and then took a two point bogey five at the equally tough 16th. That brought him to 35pts and a birdie two for three points at the 17th and a par four for three points at last saw him gather six points to finish on 41pts.

His back nine of 20pts was enough to pip Dunne, another Saturday player, for the overall prize but Dunne had the consolation of taking the Saturday honours while Hoey’s fellow Knockbridge man and regular playing partner Pearse Murphy (18) showed he had lost none of his pre-lockdown form by shooting 40pts to take the Sunday prize by three points from Brian Óg Renaghan (5).

Andrew Keenan (4), Ultan Herr (14) and John Parker (21) took Saturday’s top category prizes while Eddie Rocks (9), Anthony O’Donoghue (13) and John McErlean (23) were the Sunday category winners. Ben Cahill (19) with an impressive 41pts was the juvenile winner while Eoin Murphy (+1) captured the Gross Prize with an excellent 36pts.

In order to adhere with public health guidelines, members were given the option of uploading their scores online and 60 per cent of those who played did so, thereby saving a lot of time for the Tournament Committee who would have had to upload those cards manually to ensure players’ handicaps were updated. It is hoped that more members will use the online in the coming weeks.

The GUI has announced a reduced interclub programme for the rest of the year so team managers are currently checking on form across the club as they get ready for their competitions.

We extend best wishes to all club teams over the coming weeks and hope that we can continue the recent trend of bringing provincial pennants back to Dundalk.

One in five assisting family members with insurance payments

Almost 20% of Irish people have had to assist a family member with meeting the monthly car insurance payments within the past year, according to a recent survey.

In response to a poll over 8,532 Irish motorists undertaken

by AA Ireland, 9.57% of respondents stated that they had provided regular financial assistance to a family member in order to keep their car insurance.

Meanwhile, a further 7.27% of those surveyed stated that they had provided a family member with financial assist for this purpose on an infrequent or one-off basis within the past year.

“High insurance premiums are affecting families right across the country, but the

challenge to keep all the cars in your household insured can be greater for some than others. For example, if one of your children has recently started learning to drive, the costs associated with this can be eye-watering and place a significant financial burden on parents to assist their child while also maintaining their own insurance,” Conor Faughnan, AA Director of Consumer Affairs stated. “Similarly, if you have someone

in your family who has recently returned from living abroad for an extended period, something that many Irish emigrants chose to do as a result of the COVID outbreak, this cohort can be faced with very high premiums until they build up a period of no-claims driving in Ireland.”

The survey also found that almost 1 in 12 motorists (7.06%) stated they experienced difficulty paying their motor insurance in recent months as a

Similarly, 6.76% of those surveyed by the AA stated that they chose to take their car off the road temporarily during the lockdown due to permanent or short-term loss of work.

“While responding to the COVID-19 has been the main focus on government and the insurance industry alike in recent months, we would strongly encourage our new government to return to the issue of motor insurance reform when possible to help families across the country who may have seen a change in the financial circumstances following the outbreak,” Faughnan added.
